Book Description
Millions of children across the country have food sensitivities or allergies, and the number is on the rise. And most of these children don't get to eat cookies, for fear of the reaction they might have from the wheat, or the peanuts. Imagine the feeling a young child must have as they stand there watching their friends munch on cookies just out of Mom's oven, while they have to make do with yet another carrot stick
.
Leslie Hammond knows that left-out feeling all too well. As a child she suffered from severe food allergies and would watch year after year as, when the birthday song had ended and she'd blown out the candles, her fancy party cake was whisked away and served to her friends, while she ate a dry rice cake. Now the mother of allergic children herself, Leslie vowed to spare her own children that trauma. She had developed over 100 recipes that will appeal to a kid's tastes. Unlike other food-allergy cookbooks already on the market, her recipes hardly ever call for the kinds of ingredients that would gross out any kid -- like tofu.
The book's recipes take into account all of the most common food sensitivities like wheat and gluten, peanuts, or dairy. Each recipe can be modified to fit the dietary needs to the child.
It's divided into three sections -- snacks, main dishes, and treats. Leslie and co-author Lynne Rominger also provide information about how to find what you need in a regular grocery store, instead of requiring a separate trip to the natural foods store. She writes from the perspective of an ordinary working mom, and doesn't design eating regimes that would take all day in the kitchen to satisfy.
With the recipes in this book, even the most sensitive child will get a cookie too.
Customer Reviews:
Awful!.......2007-09-29
This cook book was awful! It didn't help me one bit when I started dealing with my child's food allergies. I thought the recipes would come without having to make all of these modifications on my own. I would never suggest this book to a friend! (OR a stranger for that matter!)
Not good for dairy or eggs........2007-08-02
I am thankful that I borrowed this book from the library first. Almost EVERY recipe calls for butter, sour cream, milk, or egg. It is so bad it is almost funny. Example Buttermilk Pancakes - egg free variation: omit eggs. Dairy free variation - Replace milk with rice milk, and replace butter with margarine. All this book has is a collection of recipes that are not good for dairy allergic people with substitutions at the bottom of almost every recipe. I can do this with any recipe I don't need a special cookbook to tell me to replace milk with rice milk. When I read the cover of the book - More than 150 recipes that are: Wheat Free, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Nut Free, Egg Free, and Low in sugar - I have to laugh. O and if you are allergic to nuts this book gives you some truly profound advice: Omit Nuts.
Best for wheat free.......2007-06-22
Luckily I read the reviews here first and checked out this book at my library before buying it. If your child has multiple allergens, I suggest you do the same. If you have relied on processed foods until now, this book may be helpful and her tone is certainly enthusiastic. However, if you're experienced in the kitchen, this book is a big waste of time and money. Just get out your Joy of Cooking and omit whatever your child is allergic too and you'll have this book.
Most-used cookbook I own.......2007-05-15
Since learning of my 6 year old's allergies a year ago, I have spent hours and hours trying to make "normal" food for him. I wish I would have tried this one first - it would have saved me a lot of time and money. The chicken nuggets, fish sticks, potato pizza, vanilla wafers, are among our favorites now. I highly recommend the book for anyone with kids. An extra plus is that the ingredients were already in my kitchen (white rice flour is common - easy to find, not as expensive as many specialty flours). I made one special trip for vanilla powder to make several of the recipes, and it is so worth it. I LOVE THIS BOOK.
Not what I expected.......2007-04-25
I was very disappointed in this cookbook. I should have done more reserach before I purchased it. Because nearly all of the recipes contain dairy and egg, I have avoided making anything for fear that by using substitutes, the recipe will not be the same. There are far better allergy cookbooks out there.

Lots of easy info.......2007-08-24
I do not have a lot of time to read with four kids and this book was a easy fast book to get through. Lots of information that was displayed easily. Not the big words either. And in the back it a huge wonderful list of resources I could look up on the internet. Wealth of information. I gave this book to our school hoping when they remodel they consider what was written.
Create a heathly, safe home for yourself and your family.......2007-05-13
This book helps you take better care of yourself and your love ones. We are concerned about what we eat and if it's safe. We also need to be concerned about what we use to clean our homes with and what we use on our skin. In this book there is lots of good, practical receipes for a toxin-free home. This book will be on that I will use often.
A Comprehensive Path Toward Ecologically-Healthy Living.......2007-03-30
Have you ever wondered about the long-term effect of cleaning products in your home? What about pesticides, chemicals and all the other potentially toxic goods that invade our lives?
Twice poisoned by such things, author Annie Bond, host of "Annie's Healthy Living Network" online, offers realistic remedies for a natural and nontoxic lifestyle that include everything from eating and cleaning to gardening and dressing. A comprehensive path toward ecologically-healthy living.
Enlightenment Indeed!.......2007-03-22
Annie Bond has hit the mark with this one. It's a definite read for anyone looking to make an impact on their health and how their actions effect Mother Earth. I learned so much from this book about how our work/home environment, from carpet to paints, can be detrimental to our health and the environment we live in.
Very pleasant book.......2007-03-11
I'm not even halfway through this book yet and I'm impressed. Loaded with useful information to make your own personal space less toxic. Offers recipes for non toxic cleaning solutions as well as healthy alternatives for just about every system in your home you can think of. Annie Bond does indeed write as if she were sitting right in your living room talking to you. I will be getting copies of this book for gifts to newly married couples and homewarming gifts, as well as baby shower gift, because what better way to welcome your new baby into your home than to give s/he a non toxic place to live and grow! Highly recommend this book. Thank you Annie Bond for taking the time and love to write it!

Book Description
"Listen to those millions of women runners. Listen to their quiet breaths as they talk in predawn pairs, before the rest of the family wakes-- the lessons and questions they share to the rhythm of steady footsteps. 'I never thought I could...' 'I feel so much stronger...' 'I'm ready to take on a new challenge...'
Women develop a special sorority on the roads. This bond is an understanding based on acceptance, an appreciation of how far they have come, a knowing wink that says how much is yet to be gained. And so they talk and share and grow-- and run. Singly and in groups, swiftly and slowly, they run."
--Dagny Scott

Customer Reviews:
Lots of information.......2006-11-06
I've just completed an 8 week beginning running program. I bought this book to read just before I embarked on the program. The book was an easy read; it has information that every beginning runner should know. I'll be keeping this book to refer to for years to come.
Here's what I found good about the book:-
1. Nuggets of information that I as a beginning runner won't have known to look for
2. Relevant to women and sometimes both sexes
3. Stories of real life women and how they got hooked on and what has kept them going - I found those inspirational
Here's what I didn't like about the book (therefore I'm giving it 4 stars):-
1. I understand that taking up running is good for you and all, helping you to maintain weight, good for your heart etc. but really, I feel that the authors sometimes go overboard with the accolades. As a beginning runner, I dont want to feel intimidated but at the same time, I dont want to feel as if I'm joining a cult.
All in all, I like the book and I'm keeping it but strangely enough, I feel uncomfortable reading about "us runners". I like to run but I also don't want to be part of an "elite group"
Great book! I would buy it through Amazon again........2006-03-10
I had a wonderful experience buying this fabulous book from Amazon. It arrived as promised and is definately the best book geared towards women for running. I have looked at a couple other books like this and they didn't even compare!
There is a runner in all of us, even YOU!.......2004-03-19
Although I had been working out for years, my stamina for running was just not there. I researched several running books, and this was by far the best. If you are a beginner, and need the basics, get this book. Age should not be a factor, but as advised-have a physical before you embark on running. I am physically fit, I had never ran, and I did not start until I was 41. There are women who write that they did not even begin until they were in their 60's! The program instructs on how to incorporate running into your workout, starting with as little as 2 minutes! You can do that right? It covers how to choose the right running shoe, how to avoid injury, and what you need to eat in order to maintain stamina for the long haul. Carb's are important here, take note. Dagny covers it all, and speaks from experience. She even covers overcoming the initial "embarassement" of running for the first time, and how to enter your first 5K and finish. I love this book, and still refer to it.
Disappointed.......2003-10-31
Personally, I was quite disappointed in the content of this book. I was getting back into running after a several year hiatus and bought this book to inspire me to a new level of fitness. I found the information to be geared towards the beginner and quickly "outgrew" it.
What a great motivator!.......2002-12-10
While training for my third marathon, I picked up this book to find some new training ideas. I couldn't put it down! It covers all facets of women's running - beginning to long distance, pregnancy, nutrition, balancing family and/or job with running and motivating factors. I used the charts, stretches and training ideas. I've recommended it to countless friends and often discussed ideas from the book while on long runs with training partners. Not only did I get some practical training advice, but I got a new resource for my running.

Easy and Healthy .......2007-06-24
I have purchased many diet books in the past, but Diet For A Pain Free Life is the one that I choose to follow from here on. I have arthritis and fibromyalgia, and just happened to see this book on the shelf while looking for another book. The recipes are easy and very good. I lost 6 lbs the first week I followed this diet. It is nutritionally superior to any other plan I have seen, with good tips on stretching and exercise also

I am about 35 pounds overweight and have struggled with joint pain for the past 5 years. I have tried everything since Celebrex was taken off the market and after being recommended this book by my sister, I can honestly say I finally found something that works! I have been on the diet for about 2 months and have lost 15 pounds already, which has done wonders for my pain- I don't have any! The recipes are also really good:)

I finally found a way to control my knee pain following the diet in this book. It is easy to make these changes and I enjoyed the variety. This was fun to try and I am hooked!

Customer Reviews:
What A Bunch Of Bull.......2007-07-21
This was a horrible book. I bought this audio book because of all the positive feedback that I read. I listened to it and could not believe what an idiot the author is. He goes on and on about things he thinks he knows something about and therefore considers himself an expert. He is so full of himself and boring. His monotone voice is enough to make you want to shoot yourself.
The only truth that will set you free is to know that this audio book isn't worth a darn and that the author is making a fortune spreading his bull around.
Certainly has some merit, but.......2007-04-16
Near page 150 (varies with different editions), the author writes, "raising your self-esteem is up to you. You can build self-esteem in a prison cell, in solitary confinement even. It does not depend on the thoughts or actions of other human beings."
I'd like to know that source for that info. Surveys done with women show that more than 3/4ths of women rely on a romantic partner to increase their self-esteem. Pulling one's self up by one's own bootstraps is more than a physical impossibility; it's also mighty tough if you've never heard good things about yourself.
That aside, the book does have some pearls of wisdom and it was an enjoyable read. It didn't get bogged down in too much detail or too many anecdotes, but had a good blend of stories, humor, poignant insights and inspirational ideas.
Great.......2006-10-17
I have the cds; it was so effective for me to hear this on my headphones as opposed to reading. Absolutely fantastic, extremely helpful.
Life changing book.......2006-10-09
For those of you that are into personal development and self improvement, I have to tell you about a book that I just finished reading it at 12:30 at night that I could not put it down. It is without a question the most powerfully simplistic, compelling and motivating book next to the Bible that I have ever read. For those who are interested, you can buy it used on Amazon.com for $3.00, and if you cannot afford it, email me your address, and I will buy it for you and mail it to you.
Interesting & informative!.......2006-09-08
Excellent. Any negative comments must be from persnickety people who are set in their ways, think they know more than others, and/or just don't want to be helped.

Customer Reviews:
Valuable Resource.......2003-02-27
When I was in high school I got the first edition of the excellent book. Now as a college student I picked up the second edition and it is as good, if not better than, the first edition. Like the old edition it is still divided into two parts. The first part is a strategy guide with lots of useful tips for finding scholarships, writing your application, negotiating for financial aid, and even specific tips for specific scholarships. The rest of the book is a scholarship directory. It looks like it contains more than the first edition - although I didn't actually count. The presentation of the scholarships are better than before and I found it easier to find awards for my major and career goals. Overall, I am very happy with this book. Although there are sections for high school students I feel that I have benefited as a college student. This is a valuable resource that I highly recommend.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to read and funny, but too basic.......2007-09-26
The book is well written and easy to read. The jokes were also welcome, especially when debt is involved. However, the advice was too basic and I learned nothing new. If you're a complete novice to the idea of budgeting and saving money, then this book would be helpful. I know the basic ideas, so I found it pretty useless. In addition, since the book was published in 2001, most websites recommended don't exist anymore or don't provide the same services. (and there are much better alternative sites available now). Given that a big portion of the book is dedicated to sites that can save money, this is a major drawback.
the first useful financial book I ever read.......2007-09-18
I ready this book in my 20's and it began my spath to financial solvency. It gave practical advice for someone making an "entry-level" salary and also helped familiarize myself with some of the more complex terms and concepts I would be faced with later. Plus it was easy to read. I did not make it to being debt-free at 30, but I had a good reason. The advice in the book helped me to be in a place financially where I could quit my job and go to graduate school at 30.
A great resource.......2005-11-09
If every 20-30 something knew the contents of this book, we'd all be in better financial shape. I had no idea that getting out of debt could be so completely demystified and so manageable.
Use it, and tell your friends about it.......2005-08-10
It's now been over a year since I read and successfully use the tips offered in "Debt-free by 30". And yes, I did pay off huge debts using this method.
This book is not about the "Latte Factor" but possesses the question, "Do you even know what the heck you're doing with the money you make?"
If you approach this book with the mindset of "I can't do that because...I don't have enough money or it won't work for me," then look somewhere else.
But if you are seeking true-to-life financial advice that you probably didn't get in college and you surely won't get anywhere else unless you actively seek it out, read "Debt-free by 30".
I used this book and made some simple Excel charts to show me where my money is and what I'm doing with it, and what I'm capable of doing with it.
Personal financing is just like running a business. If you don't have the bear facts in front of you on paper, you're only guessing and dreaming about your finances. Moreover, you could be disillusioned by your assumed inability to get out of dept by 30 simply because you have not laid out all the facts in front of yourself.
Putting the numbers on paper is a powerful step to moving out of debt. I recommended this book to my closest friend and I recommend it to you as well.
Debt free by 30.......2005-07-26
This did give very practical advice. It gives you some references that are helpful for the future.

Talk about transformation!.......2004-11-06
Do you want to be blown away by the straight-forward truth. Our child was out of control, dominating every situation we were in - it was all about him and his inability to see others. Inattentive, can't focus, getting F's in school, only because ....(the list is endless), this book lays out how to get your child on the right tract so he/she can be a contributer to society and not take from everyone.
This book spells out what our Grandparents knew and could not tell us. No more drugs, no more psycologist office visits, no more check lists and prizes, no more manipulation and bargaining; 'let your yes be a yes! and your no be a no!'
This book teaches us parents how to use gentle, firm, consistent tones so anxiety is not produced in these children.
This book talks about the way some children receive information; what are we doing as parents???? This book is not for cowards. If you are a parent who is easily influenced, this book is not for you, it is a wake up call to how we as parents parent.
Our child just received his report card...I want to cry because I am so greatful for the transformation. He received almost all A's and some B's. He can now actually draw a picture with detail. Before he would scrible on an assignment and say, "I'm done." I follow Dr. Stein's recommendations and have found peace. Our son's brothers and sister now have a friend and not a bully for a brother. It is truly amazing.
common sense for adhd.......2003-11-06
I am the mother of Ben, who has had lots of labels...Adhd, Autism, PDD, brat. Somehow he has made it through to the fourth grade and basically is a bright kid.
Ben was languaged delayed and might not have made it in the regular classroom without ritalin because he was just out of control and I was clueless as to how to change. In earlier days, we literally had to "show" Ben how to talk, with pictures... he had to "see" it to understand it, as he didn't pick up language as most kids do. He was different from the beginning!!!
He is the most frustrating, and the most enjoyable of kids I have ever had the pleasure to love. But when it came to correction, I just believed I would have to spend the rest of my life ignoring his oppositionality. It was like I had no control...and just kept getting more and more frustrated, and giving more and more negative vibes off because I was just at my wits end. I don't like the idea of spanking or yelling at all, and it always just seemed to make matters worse. Ben took no responsibility for his behavior.
When I came across this book initially I ignored it because it was that crazy "anti-ritalin" crowd, or so I thought. You know, the "zealots". After having read it and applied it somewhat, I wonder if Dr. Stein hasn't serendipitously (sp?) come across a way to help our kids behave, in the same way Catherine Maurice's book helped provide me with a way to teach Ben language!! Hey, we're on this earth to help each other out!
I really do believe Ben has a difference that makes it hard to deal with some aspects of schooling. I don't recall anywhere in this book Dr. Stein saying that it's easy. But if I only give in and say, "He can't do it, he's handicapped..." am I really helping him? It isn't a matter of ritalin or not...what this book forces you to think about is how we as parents unfortunately handicap our children by having such low expectations of them.
How can a form of discipline that includes no yelling or spanking, no belittlement; that encourages positive behavior and encourages thinking of the consequences of actions beforehand; that requires us as parents to refuse to see our children as handicapped and to enrich their lives and show them unconditional love, be bad?
Got me....

Skip the drugs and the psychiatrist. Read this book first!.......2002-12-28
Did you know that there is no scientific test for the presence of ADD/ADHD? According to Dr. Stein that's because ADD/ADHD is NOT the epidemic biological/chemical/genetic/dietary disease that today's popular medicine would have us believe. It's what grade schools used to call poor conduct, and it can be corrected with a two-pronged, drug-free approach: increase praise to reward good conduct and use boredom--what I refer to as "Time Out on Steroids"--to correct bad conduct. The book includes a simple, well-reasoned explanation of what Dr. Stein believes causes kids to be inattentive (IA) and highly misbehaving (HM). More importantly for parents like me it includes a detailed, step by step, VERY PRACTICAL program for working with an IA/HM child in a broad variety of settings (e.g. at home, at a store, in the car). He calls this the Caregivers Skills Program (CSP).
The key to the CSP is that it helps the child understand that it's to his benefit to think...think about the consequences of his actions, think about the rules, think about the feelings of others, etc. This book is surprisingly short for the importance of its subject, reads very quickly, is down to earth and to-the-point. Dr. Stein includes just the right amount of the theories behind the CSP so parents can build on the specifics in the CSP to handle other situations not specifically covered by the book.
If you're considering resorting to drugs or professional counseling to try and help a child you suspect might be ADD/ADHD, you owe it to the child and yourself to read this book first.

The Talent Solution: Aligning Strategy and People to Achieve Extraordinary Results
ASIN: 0793165148
Release Date: 2003-03-17 |
Book Description
Hold on to your talent! To get the best and keep them, managers should hire and lead like good coaches do.
Business leaders struggling to attract and retain skilled employees can learn valuable lessons from veteran coaches and sports team managers. These pros have developed engaging leadership styles over years of dealing with a shortage of skilled talent, great mobility, and a younger generation demanding greater personal fulfillment.
So how do business leaders engage their employees? Just like winning coaches do: by hiring talented people who fit, setting ambitious goals for winning, and creating chemistry and trust among the team.
Examining the highly successful methods of coaching greats Lou Piniella, Dennis Green, Phil Jackson, Scotty Bowman, and many others, The Engaging Leader helps today's business leaders learn to build on their strengths, focus on the long term potential of employees, hold themselves accountable, take risks, and develop superb communications with team members.

Lacking any real insight.......2006-11-08
This book is filled with sports analogies which frankly get a little tedious after a while. I found the contents of the book to be little more than basic and was very disappointed especially given the other readers reviews. I would not recommend this book.
Too many sports analogies to reach a broad audience........2004-06-28
I picked up this book based on the title, which emphasizes "winning" with today's "free agent" workforce. I presumed this meant the focus would be attracting the right kind of talent, and keeping those people engaged. To be fair, the book does get into the concept of cultural fit and motivation, but does so in a way which will appeal to a limited audience.
Like many, I am a sports fan, and often use analogies of team sports to make leadership or team work comparisons in the workplace. However, I am careful to not overuse these, as many are not interested in team sports and may not relate. This book is all about sports. Literally. Every page relates business leadership concepts to sports figures, in every major sport. Often this works to make his points, but it is simply too much in my opinion. The leadership concepts get lost in what often reads more like Sports Illustrated, than a business leadership book.
The concepts themselves are sound. These include discussions on "urgency of engagement", "team chemistry", "talent assessment", "goal setting" and more. In particular the author does a wonderful job of stressing the balance of home grown talent, and external hires. However, if we boiled this book down to just the leadership aspects, without the sports, it would be about 20 pages long. What is left is sometimes quite insightful, and always sound wisdom on leadership, but you can see just where the focus is. If you are a die hard sports fan, the kind of person who watches ESPN all day regardless of what is on, then this is the book for you. You will relate to the analogies, and the leadership tips and discussions are excellent. If you are not a sports fan, you may want to try a different source.
The book is well written, flows smoothly, and never dry. The "study questions" at the end of each chapter are also excellent. Perhaps a title which links this book more directly to sports would allow for clearer expectations up front. Some good insights, but may not be accessible to a diverse audience.
Great Read!.......2003-04-27
The Engaging Leader is an intelligent and creative alternative to the masses of MBA style leadership tomes that we have all encountered.
Its focus is on two principal leadership types and the best approaches to refining these within an organizational context, filled with an always unique and diverse audience of employees. The book is helpful to the manager wishing to improve her performance as well as that of the company.
Replete with some cutting edge demographic and generational statistics, The Engaging Leader provides a potent refresher as to what an effective business leader needs to focus on in 2003 and going forward.
Sports fans will also be reloaded with great super bowl cocktail party fodder as Dr. Gubman highlights several sports analogies and offers his wisdom as to what many a coach should have done in the case of a losing record or amid other team related shenanigans. You will impress your friends with the knowledge and insights gathered from these passages.

An everyman's guide to leadership.......2003-04-22
I've been a human resources professional for over 20 years, and Ed's book is a relief from the academic tomes that fill the bookshelves. It's very approachable, makes the point in a very compelling way how critical great leadership is today, and finds an everyday way to show what leadership means and the difference it makes. The sports analogies are entertaining, and the summary 'huddles' at the end of each chapter are simple and down to earth. Applause.
Book Description
For children, a diagnosis of celiac disease and an abrupt change to a gluten-free diet can bring about an overwhelming number of questions and concerns. What is gluten? Why can't I eat cake, cookies, and chicken nuggets like everyone else? What do I tell my friends? Answers to these and many other questions are provided in EATING GLUTEN-FREE WITH EMILY. Written by the mother of a child with celiac disease, who also has the disease herself, this book offers a reassuring look at celiac disease in language that a child can easily understand. This fictional story is based on the real-life experiences many newly diagnosed children face. Five-year-old Emily and her parents wonder why she's not feeling well. Her belly is swollen, and she feels moody and sick. A trip to the doctor raises some concerns and further tests show that Emily has celiac disease. Emily talks about what food she can and cannot eat, how her Mom buys special gluten-free food, and the need to stay on a gluten-free diet at restaurants, birthday parties, friends' houses, school, and camp.
With its lighthearted, colorful illustrations, EATING GLUTEN-FREE WITH EMILY helps children see that having celiac disease is not so scary after all. Emily acknowledges that having celiac disease is sometimes tough, but talking about her feelings with her mom always makes her feel better. She knows that celiac disease is only part of who she is-she also likes to jump rope, paint, tell jokes, and pick flowers! This book's positive message will be a huge boost to children with celiac disease, especially those who have been recently diagnosed.

My daughter loves it.......2007-07-16
My daughter loves this book! She's 5 years old. She was very excited about bringing this book to share with her pre-k class. It has really helped the kids in her class to understand and be supportive of her severe gluten-allergy.
Recommend.......2007-01-10
I recently bought this book for my 33 month old daughter, who has CD, and she loves it. I think she likes to see that there is someone who eats like her. I would recommend the book. I also bought one for her daycare, so that they could read it to the other kids, and maybe help them understand a little.
Gluten Free with Emily.......2006-11-06
I am a preschool teacher and have a student with Celiac in my class as well as 3 other students with food allergies. I read this book and all of my students loved it! They have asked to hear it again and again. My gluten-free student actually had tears in his eyes the first time I read it and hugged me afterwards. All 15 of my students are aware of their classmates food allergies and this has been a springboard for discussion of all aspects of restricted eating. I highly reccomend this book for classroom use.
Eating Gluten-.......2006-03-26
I bought the book for my grandson, Connor. He is 9 (4 when he was diagnosed with celiac) He loved the book. A book that was written for kids with celiac was just what he needed to read. He has decided to donate it to the school library. I thought this was a good choice. A book others could read that had celiac or just to read to understand about the celiac person and how he copes with the celiac.
Cute story.......2006-02-27
I am a dietitian and I will recommend this book to parents of newly diagnosed celiac children. I think it would help them to feel not so alone with their illness.
