Book Description
In the late 1960s, Eliot Wigginton and his students created the magazine Foxfire in an effort to record and preserve the traditional folk culture of the Southern Appalachians. This is the original book compilation of Foxfire material which introduces Aunt Arie and her contemporaries and includes log cabin building, hog dressing, snake lore, mountain crafts and food, and "other affairs of plain living."
Customer Reviews:
Reliving the Past.......2007-09-04
If you are interested in learning how our forefathers lived without the modern day conveniences that we enjoy today, this book is a must read. You will learn how they survived without much income and you could learn something beneficial that you never knew.
PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST IN THIS GENRE.......2007-03-26
The Foxfire books are a wonderful thing and we are so lucky to have them. Many of the ways, crafts, planting lore, animal lore, and as the book says "affairs of plain living" are preserved here. This particular volume includes different wood and it's uses, Mountain Recipes, Slaughtering Hogs, weather signs faith healing and so very, very much more. this is a wonderful recording of life the way it was and probably never will be again. The book is quite well written and has faithfully recorded even the dialect of these wonderful people, from which so many of us sprung. That is a big part of the charm of these works. This book includes actual interviews with folks from that region of the country which I am sure are long dead now. Their knowledge would be completely lost without works such as this. Another generation or two and it will all be completely gone. Thank goodness we have recordings such as this. Recommend this one highly.
NO IDEA what they're saying.......2007-01-18
I heard about this book and thought, "OH I'm from the South and this book will be lovely to read to find out about how things used to be." And I would probably have been right if I could have made out what they were talking about. The slang is much too thick for me. I'm not sure anyone could understand it except people who actually are from this region. Thumbs down for no translation.
buy it and use it.......2006-06-18
Don't get me wrong the entire series is amazing. Book one is the best and one of the more practical. The chapter on log cabin building was my inspiration to build my own cabin. At least 75% of the cabin was directions from this very book. Reading a Foxfire (any of them) does something to you that's hard to explain. I think of Foxfire books as almost a self-help guide that teaches you how to slow down for a minute. I recommend this book for anybody with high blood pressure or some kind of anxiety problem. It's therapeutic. These students met some really neat people of Appalachia. We can't let this way of life fade away as it almost has in my hometown, Knoxville.
An incredible resource of "oldtimer" wisdom.......2006-04-15
I've inherited the first seven, origional print books from my dad, and bought 8 and 9 for myself just a year ago, and I must say that I've always enjoyed reading these books. The people who contributed their knowledge & wisdom to these books are a resource that has largely been lost to us, and it's a shame that more of us don't realize the wisdom that is missing in this world with the deaths of these oldtimers (as the books were written in the 70's primarily).
I rate this book right up there with Carla Emery's books, as a great resource for folks trying to get back to a more self-sufficient way of life and providing for themselves, their families, and even friends & neighbours. These books definitely give a sense of old-fashioned camaraderie and willingness to help your neighbour in time of need (and in times of plenty).

Book Description
This amazing book has every possible airplane design from stunt plane to glider, from the normal dart, to the X-Wing. You don't need fancy paper to execute and you can also learn to make ninja stars and frogs, helicopters, and a pac-man head. If you love paper planes, get this book!
Customer Reviews:
Not Recommended.......2006-11-03
This book has the most horrible directions and diagrams immagineable! There is no glossary of terms the author uses in his instructions (what in the world is an "accordian fold" and how does one "accordian-fold the bottom sides"? What is a "bottom side"?) and the diagrams are poorly labelled. Children and their parents will end up with nothing but frustration.
Tons of fun! Great book for a rainy day........2006-06-05
This is probably one of the greatest books I ever got as a gift growing up as a child. There are 40 different airplane instructions and 10 toy instructions. The airplanes truly are the highlight of this book. There are so many great airplanes and anyone (child or adult) could spend hours folding different airplanes and flying them through the air!
My personal favorite is the "Long Distance Champ." This airplane flies forever (supposedly up to 150 feet! Although none of mine have flown that far - of course my living room is only about 30 feet wide). I also enjoy "The Hunter," "The Origami-Nose Box Plane," and "The Ram Jet."
If you take care of kids I totally reccommend getting this book because it really is a great thing to pull out on a rainy day. The best thing about this book is every design only needs a normal sheet of white typing paper. You don't have to cut out pre-colored designs like many other airplane books.
Lots of Fun.......2003-02-14
I never knew paper airplanes could fly so well. Right from the start you'll be able to build simple planes that fly straight and far. The short paragraphs about each plane, in which the author sometimes explains how he discovered the design of the plane, are fun to read. The flying tips included with some designs are helpful. The only problem with the book, and the reason I didn't give it five stars, is that the diagrams and instructions for some designs are confusing. For example, I can't build the last plane even after spending about an hour and several sheets of paper on it. It would be really helpful to have actual photographs of some of the more complicated planes at certain steps in the building process. Regardless, for me the book was worth it after I built plane number one.
Fun book, be a kid and have some fun.......2001-12-16
This is a great book on paper airplanes and some origami paper toys. It is mostly about airplanes and there is airplane after airplane on page after page. No matter what you want your airplane to do, glide for long distance, do tricks or just plain look cool, it is in this book. Unlike some other books on this subject it does not have any premarked papers secured to the inside of the book that you can rip out and fold. On the other hand, these planes use ordinary paper and have such good illustrations that you can make them without any premarked patterns on the paper. I love the book. I've folded most of the planes and flew them. It makes me a popular person at children get togethers and allows me to be a child again once in a while myself.
The only thing that I don't like is that it has no theory of paper airplanes. If you fold one and it does not seem to be acting right then there is nothing in here that might teach you how to correct the problem. If you want to learn the aerodynamics involved in making a paper airplane act the way it does, how lift and drag affect the flight, etc, then this book is useless to you. But if you just want to follow the diagrams and make some great airplanes that are consistently fun, then this is your book.
Just "plane" fun.
wonderful.......2001-02-12
This book is an amazing book. It has every possible airplane design you could ever want. If you want a stunt plane, you got it. If you want a glider, you got it. If you want a plane to smack your sister in the forehead, you got it. This is the book for you! (cheesy smile here)

The hilarious story of how a piglet tells her family how she was caught by a wolf and nearly became soup.
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious.......2006-07-06
This book has to be one of the funniest children's books we have ever read. We originally checked it out from the library and loved it so much we had to buy our own copy. It provides tons of giggles. It is perfect for our 5 year old's silly sense of humor.
Wonderfully funny and imaginative........2001-02-27
Hog-Eye is one of my children's (6 and 8) all-time favorite books. (It's one of my favorites as well!) The little pig's creative explanation of how she missed the bus is humorous, but her family's sideline responses to the story are what make this book really wonderful. Hog-Eye demonstrates just how important a little ingenuity and the ability to read can be.
One of my daughter's favorite books ever..........2000-05-18
My six year old daughter and I have read this book over thirty times, and we're still laughing! A little pig, trying to explain why she missed school, invents a tall tale about a hungry wolf, a soup recipe, and her own ingenious efforts to escape the wolf's clutches. Don't miss this book!
Excellent read aloud.......1998-06-07
Hog-eye is one of those books that elementary librarians like myself search for. It is a wonderful excellent read aloud that the children enjoy especially the "underwear" part. It is also a wonderful book about the importance of reading without hitting the children over the head. Also I could really get into reading aloud this book. It was such a fun experience for students and I. Thank you Susan Meddaugh.
Innovative children's book with funny dual story line........1997-01-25
If you're looking for a children's book that reflects the attitude of today's kids, read Hog Eye. With an unique dual storyline, the main character is telling about her adventure and dubiously clever escape, and her large family is reacting and commenting. You enjoy a delightful blend of interactions.
And when you get the the punchline of the story, your kids will remember it FOREVER.
A real keeper. A regular read for our three kids

Customer Reviews:
Great for 2 and 4 year olds!!!!!.......2005-08-25
My two boys ages 2 and 4 love this book. Their favorite line being "much better". They know exactly when to say it and crack up laughing everytime. My sister bought this book for my nephew and I just had to have it. It is a book that I can read over and over again without getting bored. If you are looking for a book that's interesting for two children at two different age spectrums, I would definitely try this one.
Hoglarious!.......2004-05-12
Bed Hogs is a well-crafted rhyming story that flows like the drool out of a hog's mouth. I have added it to my collection of books to read aloud to groups of children. They laugh out loud everytime! The illustrations are amazing, and compliment the story to an extreme! Very well done...this is what parents are looking for when purchasing a children's book.
Very cute!.......2004-04-13
This was a very cute book which will have any child laughing as it is read to them. I received it as a gift when my baby was born, and even though he is too young to understand it now, I fell in love with it. The illustrations are fantastic, too!
A pork barrel of laughs!.......2004-03-25
It's very hard to resist this adorable cover. And once you pick it up, you won't be disappointed! I laugh all the way through BED HOGS every time I read it to my kids, who can't seem to get enough. We all identify with the poking and kicking and snoring and drooling that inevitably happens when families cuddle up! It's a perfect bedtime, familytime story!
Bed Hogs is a wonderful book for children and parents alike.......2004-03-20
I've just finished reading Bed Hogs by Kelly DiPucchio and I loved it. It is a funny story with a life lesson on how much families need each other. The illustrator did a "fine" job too.
I intend to include books like this one whenever someone has a baby shower.

STAR RATS!.......2002-02-21
Both the text and drawings of this book will have you in stitches, and keep you wondering. While seemingly simplistic, the small phrases like "FLEX, ELF" accompanied by a drawing of a dwarf desperately trying to muster up to large cloned muscle men are absolutely hilarious. If you love words, language, and a sharp wit, this is the book for you. Truly one you will want to return to again.

Palindromes. Hard to write, fun to read, especially in the expert hands of Jon Agee.
A palindrome is a word or phrase that is spelled the same way forwards or backwards, as in "Go hang a salami! I'm a lasagna hog!", which has to be one of the longest and most complicated palindromes in existence.
Mr. Agee has collected some fantastically fun and funny palindromes in this collection illustrated by the author. There is a picture of a lion on a sunny beach with a bottle of "lion oil" behind him. Winnie the Pooh is doing the hula hoop (it's "Pooh's hoop", of course!!). My personal favorite (and an exceptionally long palindrome) is of an inventor in a room full of switches, gadgets and wires. In the middle of the room sits a tiny box playing music. He exclaims, arms out, "I madam, I made a radio! So I dared! Am I mad, am I?!" Go ahead, spell it backwards...
In a world where good English skills are swiftly becoming a rarity and few folk seem interested in grammar or word games, Mr. Agee's book is a breath of fresh air. At times, the illustrations fit the palindromes so perfectly that you almost forget that these are special sentences that are quite difficult to create, and the read more like a comic strip.
Kudos to Mr. Agee for not only playing about with words to create Palindromes, but for publishing some for those struggling folk (like myself) who can't seem to come up with any of our own!! Readers may also want to check out his other book, "So Many Dynamos!"
upliftingly funny, great for when I'm in a funk.......1998-08-31
this book is found in one of my local libraries and it helps me to get out of my adult depressions. I'm especially enamored of the guy in the Chinese Restaurant who's asked by the waiter, "Wonton?" and his reply is "Not now!"

Hogs Among Us.......2005-11-06
Many years ago, I was alone, floating on the sea of human companionship like a wretched speck of oil atop a great sea of cold, emotionless water. I drifted listlessly through the wasted years of my youth, never knowing the joy of friendship. Finally, I became a counselor at a summer camp in Vermont, where I came across Hedgepeth's great tome. I spent hours gazing at the image on the cover, of a beutiful, nude blonde woman riding bareback on a great specimen of swine. I taught the Hog Song to all of my campers and recited hog poetry in the forests under the moon. And not to go into specifics, but I learned quite a bit from the section about hog breeding. Quite a bit. I would just like to thank you, William Hegdepeth, for writing this remarkable book, and, if you are out there somewhere, please contact me so we can breed hogs--together.
Sincerely,
J--- W--- (Floating Feather)
This book is subversive, hilarious and life altering.......1999-08-18
In college days, a friend gave me a copy of this book for my birthday. In it was a picture of a hog, its face painted like a clown, a ruffled clown collar and a conical clown hat. I stared at that picture off and on for quite awhile vowing, I want to train "circus pigs" for a career. Eventually I went on to train hogs for movies, television and live performances. Keep this book away from your children and young impressionable college students unless you want to condemn them to a life of loving hogs ... and people too, because after reading this holy scripture, you will realize, we too are hog.
Hedgepeth borrows from Cinderella and Pygmalion.......1999-01-31
William Hedgepeth's The Hog Book keeps you alert. Reading along, you pause and ask yourself, "Wait, was that list of animals written in verse?" It was. You read more and wonder, "Did he really interview that farmer or did he make it up?" It doesn't matter. Hedgepeth's talent is to compel the reader then punctuate his yarn with a delightfully palatable, "Gotcha!" Just when you've fallen under the Hedgepeth spell of silliness, he tugs at your heart with an in-your-face look at the slaughter of these animals he's just caused you to fall in love with. Why should you read a book about hogs? Because Hedgepeth is a gifted writer, and it's a pleasure to read his words. Because Hedgepeth's instruction about hogs goes down as if with sugar. Because Hedgepeth borrowed from Cinderella and Pygmalion to reveal beauty in creatures frequently ridiculed and dismissed. Perhaps each of us sees a little of our insecure selves in Hedgepeth's recognition of the value and beauty of the oft-maligned hog.
A wonderful, fun, and unique book........1999-01-29
William Hedgepeth has written one of the most unique books imaginable on the life of hogs. This dry and witty look at porcines is no quick compendium on the subject. It is a thorough and informative account of everything you could want to know about these creatures. And it's funny.
An early Ally McBeal Show featured a case where Michael, a pig, gave up his life in order to donate his liver (or some organ) to the crass & orca fat Mrs. Goldstein. Instead of thanking the Doctor for life, she sued because she felt it beneath her to share an organ with a pig. Had Goldstein read The Hog Book, she might have requested Michael's heart as well. This animal's existential ability to accept itself and experience joy in living is a tall order that most humans cannot fill.
I see a sequel to this book - The Tao of Being a Hog, Living in the Now. In any case, I wish this author would turn his journalist's eye and writer's wit onto another subject quick. He's a pleasure to read.
Whitty, informative and hilarious........1998-10-09
Who would have thought that a book about hogs could be both as funny and informative as "The Hog Book" by William Hedgepeth. I laughed, I cried, I had swine visions.
Mr. Hedgepeth has managed to relate to the reader what, I believe every farm boy has secretly know for years, that hogs are magical, mystical beings worthy of our deepest respect and admiration. If you don't believe me just read the section on hog poetry or gather around the old piano and launch into a chorus of the Hog Song.
Mr. Hedgepeth has a gift for weaving fact and fantasy into a fabric that is as hilarious as it is enlightening. The book is beautifully illustrated by John Findley (is this the same John Findley who wrote and illustrated "Tex-Arcana" for Heavy Metal Magazine?) with photos by world famous photographer Al Clayton. I highly recommend it and it would make a good gift for all the farm boys or girls for that matter on you Christmas list.
I just couldn't put it down except when I was laughing to hard.
