5 out of 5 stars Complete Works of Oswald Chambers.......2007-09-07

Most people are familiar with "My Utmost for His Highest" but I was interested in learning more from the life of Oswald Chambers and the Bible University that he gave so much of himself to. I was not disappointed as he has an incredible way of taking the passages from the Word and making them come alive while challenging you to serve our Mighty King.

For Christians searching for a deeper life, a truer understanding of faith, this is it. Oswald Chambers has been described as an example of a life sold out to the Cross of Christ. I have been reading Chambers for over a year now and have had my heart pricked repeatedly by the Truth proclaimed by this man. I use the CD-ROM version (as a Libronix user) and it's great - I have him wherever I travel with my laptop.

Some have commented that Chamber's "Utmost..." is not as accessible and practical as Spurgeon's "Morning..." or "Evening..."

That may be true and that is why in order to fully appreciate "Utmost," read where the texts came from--all of his works.

Not only are his works compiled into one tome, but the CD features Chamber's poetical works also. I did not realize he was that incredibly gifted!

Awesome!

I have friends who don't like O.C. because they say they didn't get anything out of /My Utmost for His Highest/. I first got a copy of Utmost when I was a teenager and it was 10 years before I was at the point where I could learn something from it. These Complete Works go above and beyond Utmost both in breadth and depth of study.

The Complete Works of Oswald Chambers is an exceptional compilation of notes taken by Mrs. Biddy Chambers as she attended her husband's lectures at the Bible Training College in the early 1900's. Each study shows Chambers' profound insight into human nature (i.e. my nature) and God's purpose for us as redeemed individuals. Woven through each lecture is the essential theme of intimate devotion to Jesus Christ. I bought a 2nd copy and gave it to my dad. Then I got another copy for my uncle. Then another for my good friend. $25-30 is well worth the treasure trove of knowledge and insight in this book. Trade the cost of 3 movie passes for something that will benefit you for a lifetime! Obviously, I highly recommend it!

THe Complete Works of Oswald Chambers is worth the asking price. In addition to the hard cover book there is a cd included which contains the complete works with many extras. This is a great collection and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Introduction to Irish Food and Cooking. Buy It........2006-03-02

`The Irish American Cookbook' by Biddy White Lennon and Georgina Campbell and `The Taste of Ireland In Traditional Home Cooking' by Matthew Drennan are two relatively inexpensive new books on Irish cooking with lavishly illustrated recipes done with color photographs and very nicely written procedures. Both books are excellent first books on Irish cooking with slightly different audiences. The larger, more expensive Lennon and Campbell book is great if you are really interested in a sound introduction to Irish cuisine and are quite interested in wanting to know a lot more about it. The smaller Drennan book is great if you simply want a few good authentic Irish recipes to make around St. Patrick's Day with superior guidance on how to make them, but you have no interest in studying Irish cuisine, its history, and its `terroir'.

One important word of warning. Both books were written and published for an Irish and UK audience, so there are several expressions which are familiar to residents of the British Isles, but which may not be entirely familiar to the colonies. Examples are `double cream', `rashers of bacon', `saltpetre', `black treacle', `a large swede', and `carragheen moss'. All are taken from the smaller Drennan book. Most occur in the larger book as well; however, they are much more commonly explained in the large book, as it was clearly edited for sale in the United States as well as in English speaking British Isles. I am especially happy to see that both books also give both metric and English measurements for volumes and weights. Even better, liquids are often measured in both fluid ounces and in cups. If you have no patience with unusual culinary terms, I would take a pass on the Drennan book and try `Irish Traditional Cooking' by leading Irish cooking school owner, Darina Allen or `the Irish Heritage Cookbook' by Irish-American high school teacher and culinary writer, Margaret M. Johnson, both of which are very friendly to American culinary knowledge.

With the fact that it is available for a very reasonable price, the greatest virtue of the Drennan book is the fact that it's few recipes are all perfect archetypes of traditional Irish cooking. So, if that's all you want, this will give it to you for a pittance.

The Lennon and Campbell Book also focuses primarily on traditional recipes, but it also gives us much, much more. The book opens with a 30 page illustrated essay on a culinary history of Ireland. The very best thing about it is that it does not overlap much the two other essays on Irish culinary tradition in `Celtic Folklore Cooking' by culinary writer and folklorist, JoAnne Asala which concentrates on Irish pre-Christian folklore and religions and `Elegant Irish Cooking' by culinary scholar, teacher and professional chef, Noel C. Cullen Ed.D, CMC, AAC which focuses on a history of cooking and chefs in Ireland. Our book from Lennon and Campbell explains much more about modern Irish cuisine than the other two do. It even partially answers the question of why, when beer brewing is so popular in Ireland, the most popular types of breads are leavened with chemical leaveners. It is also much more informative of the differences in cuisine for different classes of people, so common and well known of Italy, for example.

This excellent section is followed by a second 30 page essay on `The Irish Kitchen' which outlines all the most important Irish food sources and products such as its eggs, dairy, cheeses, sausages, brewing, and distilling industries.

I am not a big one for photographs in cookbooks except when explaining a subtle or difficult technique such as pastry crust making or omelet cooking, but when the photographs are done very well, it can't help but add to the value of the book, especially when its in a genre where most other books in that genre are without superior illustrations. This is another reason this is an especially good book for a beginning cook or someone starting out with Irish cooking. Not that Irish cooking is complicated. It is generally no more complicated than Italian cooking, although it is much more similar, in general, to the cooking of northwest and western France, with its great output of dairy, apples, pears, pigs, and cattle.

The section on breads and cakes alone is worth the price of admission, as next to potato and corned beef dishes, the most distinctive thing about Irish cooking is its breads, biscuits, scones, and holiday breads and cakes with candied fruit. The most interesting recipe here for me is the `Quick barm brack', a yeasted Halloween traditional loaf whose name derives from the fact that it was originally made with leftover beer yeast.

While I have seen many excellent Irish cookbooks over the last three weeks, I can categorically recommend this as the very best `first' Irish cookbook or `only' Irish cookbook if your interest extends no further than two weeks in the middle of March. My recommendation is even safer due to the fact that the book lists for a mere $29.95, well below the average price, let alone the average price for a lavishly illustrated oversized book.

Very highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The Best way vto learn about negro league baseball.......2007-05-15

I really like the book The Journal of Biddy Owens. It was about a boy from Birmingham Alabama at the age of 17 he was playing on a Negro league team called the Black Barons. They played on away team fields or their home field Rickwood. The Black Barons had to travel all around the United States to play against 11 different Negro league teams and some Rookie teams. There where some many talented ball players on the team and there was one who was the leader who is the second baseman named Piper. They where a very outgoing team like going to restaurants and meeting new people. The team mad it all the way to the championship. I liked the author because he used very descriptive words and the best was that he uses dates and not chapters. I would recommend this book because it was very well written and descriptive.

4 out of 5 stars This book was actually okay!.......2007-04-16

This book is about a 17 year old boy named Biddy Owens. He is an African American and is the equipment manager for the Birmingham Black Barons. The year was 1948 and he lived in Alabama. The Black Barons were a team that at the time played in the Negro Leagues. Biddy had always been fascinated with baseball and had always wanted to play as a regular player. He always felt left out just running errands and keeping score. The head coach named Piper knew that so every now and then in practice Piper would let Biddy jump into right field. Piper said though that if he wanted to be on the team though, he would have to put on a few pounds because of him only weighing 135. Biddy started getting better and better and got his weight up until they finally let him join as what they called a regular. That year the Birmingham Black Barons made it to the Negro League World Series. In that series the Black Barons lost every single game. Biddy realized that he wasn't very good, but he didn't care because he had such a love for baseball. In the end the Barons season ended and Biddy got invited to come back and play again next year. I recommend this book to anyone who likes following a diary/journal and to people who especially like baseball.

3 out of 5 stars Homerun Hitting Book.......2005-04-16

Read a homerun hitting book about baseball. It is the Negro Leagues and it is the journal of Biddy Owens. It is about a 17 year old boy that is the team equipment manager of the Birmingham Black Barons. He sometimes gets to play right field and hit the ball too. He goes from city to city with the team to baseball games.
The conflict is that the Blacks have to play baseball in their own league and in some cities they go to they can't go into certain bathrooms, they can't go into certain stores, and they can't even drink out of certain water fountains. Later in the book the white people realize that black people can do things just as well as white people can, so the white leagues draft some black people into their league to play in the major leagues with the white people.
I would recommend people that enjoy baseball read this book because you could read a lot about the history of baseball and how different it was in 1948 compared to how it is now. You could learn about how the leagues were separated and how they come together to form one league.

4 out of 5 stars This book makes you want to play a game of baseball with fri.......2005-02-23

This book makes you want to play a game of baseball with friends!

*************************************

I chose to read Biddy Owens by Walter Dean Myers because I thought it would be fun and interesting to read. The cover of this book looked like the best biography out there. After reading this book, I felt like playing a good game of baseball because this story described the game like no other! This story was in a way what I expected it to be, but in a way wasn't what I had bargained for. It was what I thought it would be like because it was jam packed with action about all the games Biddy Owens played. It was not what I thought it would be like however, because it also had details about their home life. I definitely don't feel the same about this book because I thought it was going to just be about baseball but it wasn't. It was also about how black people were discriminated in 1948 in Birmingham, Alabama.

The main character of this biography's name is Biddy Owens. He is at age 17 years old, 5 foot 10 inches tall but only weighs 135 pounds when this story takes place. He is an equipment manager, a scorekeeper, an errand boy, and sometimes right fielder. This book takes place in 1948 Birmingham, Alabama. This story is about Biddy Owens and when he played for the Black Barons. It is also about his home life. This is a biography written in first person by Walter Dean Myers.

I liked this book because it had two parts to it, it described baseball back then but it also described black discrimination and home life back then, and I like that because it came from Biddy Owens that had experienced both of those.

I liked this book a lot! And I would definitely recommend it to a friend. I think this book would be appropriate for anybody at the age of 10 or up.

I would give this book a four-star rating.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Patriot.......2004-12-09

Scott Pendelton Collins is a true american patriot. In this book he faces many hardships that would make many men runaway with their tails between their legs. He fights through one of the most well known battles of World War Two, D-Day and his company aids in the capture of the French city of St.Lo, and many key cities along the way. He has to walk endless miles and be ready for unexpected attacks, as well as have to be ready to fight with a 30 minute notice. He is hesitant on making friends because he knows that they or he could die at any time. He witnessed many of his new friends die on the beach on D-Day. He also reads about one of his friends deaths in a casuality report. He says the war has changd him in many ways, some good and some bad, and he doesn't think he will ever be able to forget the constant boom of the arterilly fire for both sides, allies and germans.
Scott fights for his family back home and his friends, but he also fights to defend many people in Europe he has never met. He steps in and fight risking his life for people he has never met and for people who can't fight for themselfs. He has the power to fight and he fights, this makes him a true patriot, fighting not only for his faily and friends, but for people he hasn't met and for his nation that he loves. Even through all his fighting he has to give up the right to tell his parents anything about where he is and what he's doing which he sacrifices knowing that what he is fighting for is well worth the sacrifice. He is willing to make the biggest sacrifice anyone can make for his country which is something only a true american patriot would do.

Woman and Modernity provides what previous studies of Salom have in large part neglected to offer--a sustained investigation of the literariness of Salom's texts and of Salom as a significant reader of modernity. Focusing on key encounters in Salom's writings, such as her exchanges with Nietzsche, Ibsen, Rilke, Freud, and late nineteenth-century middle-class German feminists such as Dohm and Stcker, Martin approaches Salom's life and work as a series of strategic negotiations concerning the place of women and the meaning of femininity.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly Communicated in Complex Long Sentences.......2007-01-12

This book is written in what I would call complex, long, wordy sentences that communicate poorly. It almost seems to be so intellectual that few could understand it. It certainly is not my style. I prefer Ernest Hemingway who communicates so simply, so well and in as few words as possible. This book is the opposite.
