Customer Reviews:
Great basic historical book on lucha libre.......2007-06-01
Picked up the boook after realizing Madigan's name as someone who once wrote TV for WWE a few years ago. The first thing that hits you when reading the book is the personal attachment from the author as he talks about his personal love for lucha libre. The book is a great historical tool in terms of discussing the beginnings of the sport in Mexico, the necessary figures in the sport and influence of it in American and Japan. Something that's also a fun tidbit is small insert stories about various backgrounds. One of which is the negativity of WWF and McMahon towards lucha libre and mocking overtones until the late 1990s when they had to and even then it was jsut a one time deal (1997). The details of Paul Heyman (Madigan is a big proponent of Heyman, who's called the savior of lucha libre in the U.S.) and his role in bringing guys like Mysterio, Konan, Psichosis, etc. to the States and eventually, them jumping to WCW is a necessary tale. Two things took away from the boook though. First, at some points certain parts drag on and he does come off as a bit repetitive. Another thing, one of which I thought would have really made the book amazing, was if Madigan went into detail about certain specific angles during the years involving El Santo, Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras, etc. I guess he didn't because as he wrote early on about lucha libre, most of the stories are told in the ring, with the wrestling, and not in the same way we're use to it in the U.S. One minor thing that bugged me was the lack of a mention for Mistico (current CMLL wrestler) who is one of the top draws in the world. I figure the book was finished years ago (since Madigan wrote about Juventud, Super Crazy and Psichosis as being a group on WWE TV), so I attribute that to that. Overall, a good book and the pictures (some of which I gather are rare) are fun to go through. If nothing else, a definite much needed book on a topic that isn't well known about currently in the States.
Viva la Mondo Lucha!.......2007-05-14
Great Book! Lottsa history and current stuff such as Lucha Vavoom. Only in this book will you find a historical and enchanting journey into this very special and unique culture!
Lucha Muy Bueno.......2007-05-05
This book is excellent. It goes beyond talking about the Big three Luchadors Mils Mascaras, El Santo, and Blue Demon. It talks about El Muricelago, The Guerreros, La Parka, White Angel, Dr. Wagner and others. It gives you insight on the culture of Mexico and Lucha Libre as well. Beautiful photos are in the book some are very rare. This is a must for any wrestling fan. BUY IT!!!!!!
More than just a wrestling book..........2007-04-27
A lot of people might pick up this book with tongue planted firmly in cheek -- chuckling at the silly, pop culture nonsense of Mexican wrestling. But this book is not a joke and it's not about wrestling. It's about culture, history, society, entertainment, myth, etc. It's about the genuine love fans have for wrestling and what it means to them.
It's throughly researched and written with genuine enthusiasm - which is an amazing achievement when you consider its author is legally illiterate and often unable to wash himself properly.
Buy it and you'll see that this book and all of Mexican wrestling is no joke.
Viva El Santo!.......2007-04-27
This book is about Mexican professional wrestling, obviously. It gives a general overview of the history of the sport, with special emphasis on some of the biggest stars. Some of these wrestlers became so popular that they became big movie stars in Mexico (while wearing masks, no less). Mexican wrestling has a very colorful history, and it's well covered here, with plenty of colorful pictures.

In 1898 John H. Patterson arrived in East Africa with a mission to build a railway bridge over the Tsavo River. What started out as a simple engineering problem, however, soon took on almost mythical proportions as Patterson and his mostly Indian workforce were systematically hunted by two man-eating lions over the course of several weeks. During that time, 100 workers were killed, and the entire bridge-building project ground to a halt. As if the lions weren't enough, Patterson had to guard his back against his own increasingly hostile and mutinous workers as he set out to track and kill the man-eaters. This larger-than-life tale forms the basis of the entertaining film The Ghost and the Darkness, but for readers who want to know the whole--and true--story, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo comes straight from the great white-hunter's mouth.
Patterson's account of the lions' reign of terror and his own subsequent attempts to kill them is the stuff of great adventure, and his unmistakably Victorian manner of telling it only adds to the thrill. Consider this description of the aftermath of an attack by the lions: "...we at once set out to follow the brutes, Mr. Dalgairns feeling confident that he had wounded one of them, as there was a trail on the sand like that of the toes of a broken limb.... we saw in the gloom what we at first took to be a lion cub; closer inspection, however, showed it to be the remains of the unfortunate coolie, which the man-eaters had evidently abandoned at our approach. The legs, one arm and half the body had been eaten, and it was the stiff fingers of the other arm trailing along the sand which had left the marks we had taken to be the trail of a wounded lion...." This classic tale of death, courage, and terror in the African bush is still a page-turner, even after all these years.
Book Description
St. Martin's is proud to present a new series of the greatest classics in the literature of hunting and adventure, chosen from the personal library of writer and big game hunter Peter Hathaway Capstick. These showcase volumes will once again make available the true masterpieces of Africana to collectors, armchair hunters, sportsmen, and readers at large.
Considered one of the greatest man-eating sagas of all time, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo is the firsthand account of the infamous Tsavo lions. These lions-- who for nearly a year terrorized East Africa-- succeeded in bringing the construction of a railway line to a complete halt, and have been credited with the deaths of some one hundred people. Written by the legendary officer who shot these lions and risked death several times in the attempt, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo is not only the story of this breathtaking hunt, but of Lieutenant-Colonel Patterson's other adventures in the African bush.
"I think that the incident of the Uganda man-eating lions...is the most remarkable account of which we have any record."--Theodore Roosevelt

It is with feelings of the greatest diffidence that I place the following pages before the public; but those of my friends who happen to have heard of my rather unique experiences in the wilds have so often urged me to write an account of my adventures, that after much hesitation I at last determined to do so.

Classic Tail of Adventure.......2007-09-04
If you liked the Ghost and the Darkness you will like this book. The first half of the book Patterson recounts the trails and tribulation of hunting the to man eating lions. Patterson does this in a very British and Victorian why, yet it remains easily readable and hold your attention quite well. The second half of the book Patterson recount several other exciting hunting adventures he had while in Africa. All of them quite interesting and worth reading. Patterson's tails are grab your attention and hold you throughout the book.
review of maneaters.......2007-07-26
Could not put the book down. Liked the style of writing. Great to know it was all true.
OH YEA..........2007-07-09
PUT YOURSELF IN THIS SPOT AT THIS TIME...WOW....WE SURE HAVE IT GREAT WHERE WE ARE AT...SAFE.
Victorian adventure literature at its finest.......2007-01-23
If you like Victorian writing, if you like tales of adventure, and if you don't mind self-aggrandizing and possibly exaggerated reading, then this is the book for you. Colonel John Patterson's enormous imperial endeavour - building a bridge for the "lunatic line" across Africa - brings him into contact with a pair of man-eating lions. The story never lacks imaginative story-telling, and neither does it lack that Victorian-esque spirit of conquest (in all things) and patriarchal service to the 'noble savage.' Yet it is a wonderful story, perhaps popularised by the movie, and it will certainly stir nostalgic imaginations for years to come.
Wonderful First-Hand Account of Life in Africa.......2006-11-11
I was prompted to buy this book after seeing Jeff Corwin reading it on "The Corwin Experience." I thoroughly enjoyed it although toward the end I was getting a little tired of hearing about Patterson's hunting expeditions.
It's a window into a different time and place. And then there are the lions!

The ultimate insider’s book by a WNBA champion and WNBA broadcaster. A must read for all girls’ and women’s basketball players, coaches, fans and wannabes.

Fabulous read! A must for any fan of the league........2001-07-24
All it needed was a little proofreading :) , but the content and style were da bomb. Can't wait for her novel!
Forthright and Funny, Fran Pens a Winner.......2001-05-20
I ordered "Summer Madness" a couple of weeks ago and read it the night it hit the doorstep. As a former player who won an NCAA championship with the Texas Longhorns (for which she was named MVP) and a WNBA title with perennial champions, the Houston Comets, Harris writes from personal experience with the greats of the game. As a sports commentator, Harris is an entertaining writer with unvarnished opinions (which she gleefully shares) on the WNBA and its big-name players.
Which team was so cheap it rationed sweat socks? Would you like to know a little more about the enigmatic four-time Championship MVP Cynthia Cooper? Be warned that "Summer Madness" is more akin to a Fran Harris autobiography than an objective examination of the league, but that lends the book a straightforward charm. An entertaining mix of thoughtful essay, personal memoir and dishy gossip, "Summer Madness" is a must-read for anyone who follows the WNBA.
There is a photo section, an enlightening forward written by WNBA star Tina Thompson, and plenty of stuff not already published in Harris' columns. There also are several laugh-out-loud passages (don't read it in your cubicle at work) and a very touching remembrance of Kim Perrott, Harris' Houston Comet teammate.
Summer Marvelous.......2001-05-07
Well worth the shipping wait! If you enjoy Fran's straight-forward, witty columns then you will love this book. It was insightful and entertaining. Part autobiography, part documentary, and part commentary. A WNBA book like this was long overdue. I've recommended it to all the women's basketball fans I know.

Phantom Ghost of Harriet Lou, and Other Elk Stories
ASIN: 0918981050 |
Book Description
I'm distressed by the idea of Jane wanting to compete in a man's world. That's the way my wife refers to her growing enchantment in outdoors adventure. The idea infuriates me. I understand that anyone who really is anyone must struggle with everday problems and relationships. I realize love must be learned and earned, and that it can be lost through mistakes or choices made or not made during life. Some might applaud the thought of a lady determined to become her "own woman" in a man's world. Not me. What bothers me is not that my petite wife of more than four decades wants to compete in outdoors proficiency, but where in in hell does anyone get the idea that all in nature belongs to men? This book, then, is about two people in love, sharing a life of exciting adventure--and growing in the process. In reality, it's about any couple over forty who lived and loved and shared and struggled to live the kind of life they wanted. What makes this story especially remarkable is how many times this couple fell on their butts while doing it.

Roland Cheek is the ultimate story teller! I have just reread this book.... it is that good! This well-written autobiography gets you from the first hello, and you can't put it down! Roland tells the stories of their lives, the valley and mountain-top experiences, how they went from making a living to building a beautiful life together...... showing others how to get the most out of life.

Very well written. Lots of humor. An outdoorsman's dream come true, and a product of alot of hard work.

Customer Reviews:
This is the real deal........2002-08-07
Even though ýHandguns Do It Allý is on the back cover of Mark Hamptonýs new book, "Handgun Hunting", it is testament to his accomplishments. Mark has drawn from a wealth of first hand experience to produce the most comprehensive book on handgun hunting to date. Hamptonýs book is not a reloading manual, instead it is an invaluable resource for beginners, answering many questions on hunting tactics, choice of bullet, caliber, and firearm. Experienced handgunners interested in taking on new challenges will find Mark provides insights into hunting that only someone who has been there ý done that can provide as he takes the reader on hunts from Africa to Alaska and everywhere in between. There are numerous quality photographs in the book but a few close ups of some of the more unusual cartridges would have been nice for beginners making comparisons. Having hunted for over 20 years with a handgun myself I can tell you this is the real deal...

Okay book.......2007-02-09
I just could not get into this book. I am not exactly sure why, but I think I just could not identify with the author.
Have to disagree on the 5 star ratings.......2004-12-30
As a runner of 15+ marathons, a couple ultras and being an avid trail runner, I really wanted to love this book. Annerino is a compelling character, with great courage and anyone who has regularly run long distance on trail can see, a man who must have incredible commitment. The book however comes up short of where it could have. After the first couple of run descriptions, the rest merely become a repeat of lack of water, tough conditions, danger, exhaustion and route finding problems. Annerino frequently references that his motivation in running these routes is to gain information on how preceding Indian generations would have used them for trade, however with the exception of a small amount of info, that aspect is largely not covered in the book. It is a shame, as dedicating more print space to that objective would greatly enlivened the book. Overall, a good read and still recommended, but I can't go 5 stars.
A runner's touchstone.......2002-08-29
I first read "Running Wild" several years ago while recovering from a running injury and it not only gave me the confidence to come back from the injury but also became my running companion. I have since re-read it many times especially before an important race or when the reasons for training get blurry. For a runner it is a spiritual connection to the joy and mystery that running can be as well as historic proof of the origins of American running. John Annerino is an incredible man whose courage and love of the wilderness together with his deep spiritual committment to the land, it's history and it's people make "Running Wild" a masterpiece.
An incredible book........1999-11-19
Read this incredible book. -Karimor International Mountain Marathon
Enjoyable!.......1999-10-29
I'm rereading RUNNING WILD - enjoying it even more. Hard to sit still - want to lace up and go.
Book Description
The wilderness-forest, desert, glacier, jungle-has been the scene of the past century's most exciting stories, inspiring many of its greatest writers, including Jack London, Norman Maclean, Evelyn Waugh, Redmond O'Hanlon, Sir Wilfred Thesiger, H.M. Tomlinson and Algernon Blackwood.
Selections from these authors' most gripping works are delivered by equally compelling narration producing an audiobook experience ideal for people who are fascinated by the beauty, insight and danger that awaits us all in the wild.
Customer Reviews:
Take This One With You On Your Next Adventure.......2004-03-07
I really enjoyed this collection of stories that deals with the travails of adventurers in the wild. The stories take place all around the world in some of the most remote, inaccessible, or infrequently traveled places in the on earth.
The travelers in the stories deal with everything from elusive inhabitants of the rain forests of South America to extreme temperatures and lack of water.
This was an exciting book to read. I'd recommend that anyone going on their own adventure into the wilderness bring it along for the car ride or their trip on the airliner.
Reader Beware!!.......2004-02-14
Don't be fooled by the title of this book: "Stories of Survival from the World's Most Dangerous Places." Several of the stories are taken from fiction books. Another chapter is from Bill Bryson's, "A Walk in the Woods," which most likely has already been read by several million people. Other chapters are from books such as "Famous Ghost Stories" and "The Book of Fantasy." And yet another story is a leisurely, week-long canoe trip through Glen Canyon prior to its flooding--hardy a story of "Survival" or a "Dangerous" place. I could go on, but I'm sure you get my point. If you are looking for a book packed with true stories of survival, this is not the book for you. Shame on Clint Willis for trying to pawn this book off to the adventure readership. Trust me! I won't be fooled again, Clint.
Not Wild But Weird.......2002-01-13
This is yet another in Clint Willis's ongoing series of adrenaline, adventure, survival, disaster, storm, etc. series in which he seeks to capitalize on the rage for danger and excitement that is currently sweeping the literary market. In my search for material for a class on adventure writing I teach, I have read all of them, and found them a mixed lot with some real gems thrown in. This particular anthology is no exception, though I wish Willis would stop over dramatizing his titles. A more realistic name for the collection might be, "Exciting Moments in the Wilds," or "Wildernesss Moments."
Questionable names aside (giving titles to books is an art after all) this collection has some stand out and downright bizarre pieces that are worth reading. If you're looking for a good old-fashioned adventure story with plenty of excitement, try Dave Robert's "A Wilderness Narrrative," or Joe Kane's "Savages." For more than you ever wanted to know about tropical diseases and the dangers of traveling in the Amazaon jungle, try Redmond O'Hanlon's "In Trouble Again." But if you're looking for something really different, something that will not only entertain but make you question your sense of reality, read Barry Lopez's "Pearyland," in which the main character (a student Lopez met in an airport) steps into another, parallel world, or "The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood. The Willows in particular carries a disturbing undertone of unease and menace. The things that happen in this story shouldn't, and there is no real explanation for them.
Other, less off the wall, though no less entertaining pieces inlcude Edward Abbey's "Down the River" and Evelyn Waugh's "The Man Who Liked Dickens."
All in all, this is a worhty addition to Willis's growing pile of anthologies, thanks to the solid contributions from familiar and well-established names, but when will Willis dare to include the work of lesser known, though no less talented writers?
Not awful, but the title completely misrepresents this book.......2001-03-12
The literary quality of this book is fair. However, most of the stories have nothing to do with "survival" or "the world's most dangerous places." This is one of the most dishonest tiles I have ever seen. Come on. Where are the "stories of survival?" For example, you may or may not find it interesting to read Edward Abby's ruminations on floating through Glen Canyon, but there is no implication whatsoever that this is one of the world's most dangerous places, or that there was any issue of survival at all. The same can be said of 2/3 of these accounts.
Major Disappointment.......2000-01-29
The best part of this book was the cover. A wonderful picture of a sunset in the mountains. Had the cover made it clear that the "author" did nothing more than take excerpts from other books I never would have bought the book. The excerpts were taken so that you never really knew who you were reading about. His choices left me feeling used and I am sure he ruined several good books for me. None of the stories related in "Wild" has convinced me to read the whole book. What a shame!
