Excellent piece of work.......2006-03-27
Although I do not build guitars myself, I am highly interested in its construction techniques. I have been an amateur guitarist for over 25 years now and planning to buy a handcrafted instrument build by one of the contemporary maestroes. In order to be well prepared I wanted to learn more on the history of guitar building, famous instruments and detailed info on how to build a guitar myself. Hauser, Romanillos, various instruments described in great detail with complete instructions on how to build these instruments yourself. The instructions are accurate, elaborate and extremely thorough and even aimed at people who have no expiernce in woodwork at all. This book has it all, even adresses where to obtain wood, tools etc. Highly recommendable!
Greatest book on classical guitar.......2003-11-01
Great book that has measured drawings of many master guitars. Unlike steel string guitars, where a few models dominate, and look different, say Gibson vs. dreadnaught martin, classical guitars look externally quite similar, while varying a lot internally, and otherwise. Many of the great artists of the steel string guitar play factory models, for a variety of reasons. Top classical guitarists largely play models that originated in small shops with one or a few craftsmen. For these reasons anyone who wants to make a study of building classical guitars will find this eclectic group of guitars very important.
However, one should consider:
The building instructions are 1) European in orientation, few jigs, open assembly and so forth, actually the best place for any guitarmaker to start, but not how most here do; 2) Weak in places, because the writer is not an expert guitar builder himself, though overall very helpful, and a useful reference.
The flip side of a great book on classic designs is that it isn't a good book on current designs. Guitar making theory has advanced somewhat (though one doubts the new instruments are better, they are nonetheless preferred by many anyway). Tone vs. durability or volume for instance. There has been a huge amount of new detail added to modern classicals, for instance work on intonation, volume, wolf notes, fingerboard playability, longevity, and so forth. this stuff isn't here, but on the other hand, it's plastered over the internet.
If you have seen the violin book, this one isn't the same. The violin book was partnered with a greatish builder. Deals a lot with modern practice (though being violins, that isn't that different anyway), and the violin book doesn't have lots of useful measured drawings (any in fact), because you can get patterns of the ouline parts for strads etc...
With whatever reservations, this is the greatest book on the classical guitar, and very reasonably priced, it used to sell for 100.
THE book on guitar making.......2001-06-26
Having read all the other books on guitar making, I was amazed to find this one, Making mAster Guitars, so clear, detailed, yet logical and easy to follow. For the first time I felt able to tackle making my own guitar, and the results were pleasing. It would have been nice to have some colour pictures of the historial rosettes, etc., but even so, I advise any aspiring guitar makers to get this one.
I want to try making a violin next, and I will certainly be buying The Art of Violin Making, by the same author.
A great book. It has really helped me make good guitars........1999-03-25
This is the clearest, and most well-explained text I have found on guitar making. Everything is explained in great detail, and is therefore easy to follow. Courtnalls new book, THE ART OF VIOLIN MAKING, is similarly exellent on violin making, and has a foreword by Yehudi Menuhin.
Book Description
By mastering all techniques described in the book, you will be on your way to elevating the Travis pick from a basic chordal accompaniment to a complex solo style!

Good instruction - Lame tunes.......2007-07-12
Many have already described how good the instruction in this book is. And rightfully so. So I will bring up the one negative which made me regret getting this book.
Apart from 2 or 3 songs such as John Barley, Sloop John B, etc., the songs used for demo are mostly lame ballads and fail to generate much excitement about playing them in me. The best tune is probably the opener, written by Mark Hanson himself. Also, most of these are sing-along types in which the vocal does most of the work instead of letting the guitar stay front and center. It would have been much better to feature mostly instrumentals where the lessons learned can be displayed in full glory.
Corny vocals detract from decent book.......2007-05-24
The whole series of Mark Hanson books is excellent. I have this one as well as "Beyond Basics Fingerstyle Guitar", "The Art of Solo Fingerpicking", "Hymns & Spirituals For Fingerstyle Guitar". All highly recommended. He has a talent for breaking a piece down into manageable chunks. And his arrangements are accessible to the beginning to intermediate picker while still sounding awesome.
"The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking" rates at the bottom of the list due to the corny vocals on the CD. Perhaps incorrectly seeing this one as a follow on to "Beyond Basics," I was also a bit disappointed with the complexity of the arrangements. Otherwise, it is a decent book for beginning Travis pickers. "The Art of Solo Fingerpicking" is an excellent follow on.
Not bad.......2007-05-19
Could use more chord tablature. The CD is not good quality. I tried to contact the publisher for a replacement and was told (by Mark Hanson himself in fact) that since I bought it from Amazon I'd have to take it up with them and 'Good Luck, nyuk nyuk'.
Pretty shoddy. I won't be buying any further products from them. Buy a used copy if you must.
Superb intro to Travis Picking.......2007-04-13
This is an excellent book. I started off with the Beyond the Basics book and went to this when I finished. My playing has improved dramatically. I went at a very slow pace, however, so it did take me many months to finish. I had a lot of trouble on the 3rd to last song (the Water is Wide) and was stuck on it for over a month, but had no trouble with the last two songs. If a new edition is ever printed I'd recommend resequencing that song to the end. I'd also recommend that Mr Hanson film a video for this, as the videos for the Beyond the Basics book helped me a lot.
My ultimate goal is to be able to play Leo Kottke music as well as write my own fingerstyle pieces. A year ago I would have thought such results were at least 3 years away, but after sweating this one through, I think I'm less than a year away...We will see if I still feel this way after I finish Hanson's Art of Solo Fingerpicking. See my review of that hopefully within the next 3 months (wishful thinking??).
I LOVE this book.......2007-03-04
I am an advanced beginner/intermediate guitar player yearning to learn fingerpicking. This book is a graded, simple and easy to understand instructional manual in learning fingerpicking. From the first lesson, there are examples that sound great, can be used with a multitude of songs and are a lot of fun to learn. I've been through A LOT of books and am going to use this book (with Solo Fingerpicking as the next book I'll use when I'm done with this one) to assist my guitar lessons (in fact my guitar teacher is coming tomorrow night and I'm excited to share it with him and ask we use it as our workbook.
How to say it? I LOVE this book.

The Unexplainable Explained.......2007-02-01
This is a very good book to read if you are stuck in your guitar playing. I originally started playing the guitar to be like my idols on TV when I was [..]. That lasted until I was 13. Now in my 40's I want to play for myself and for personal growth. I just couldn't seem to get back what I had learned as a child so I started reading music theory books(The Complete Idiots Guide), and other self-improvement books. Jeff Peretz's book teaches from a unique perspective which gets me really excited and motivated to play again with commitment and a plan. Trying to play like your idol is ego based and doomed to fail. Learning to play from your heart (utilizing Zen) is better. Words cannot capture zen, but this book goes an extra mile trying to explain it for those of us who are alien to it. Good job Jeff Peretz! My future mastery over my guitar is now far more likely thanks to your book. Wish me luck, I still have a long journey ahead of me.
The real book of Zen and Guitar.......2003-09-24
Not only is this book a great read but it also has some of the most inventive musical exercises I have come across. Unlike the book Zen Guitar (which I also recommend) this book is a real "how to" study in letting go and letting it all hang out. Non guitar players will love the way the Zen process is presented. Guitar players will find the exercises challenging yet accesible. It's about time that someone wrote a book about Zen and guitar playing for the musicstand and not just the coffee table. The breathing exercises and meditations are clearly explained, the history of Zen is brief but informative but the musical ideas are what makes this a must own guitar players and a cool book for anyone who interested in getting more out of whatever they do.

Customer Reviews:
Solid, Fun Criticism- A Rarity.......2007-05-10
For the most part, art critism is pretty dry, boring stuff. In Hickey's hands, it's much more lively. The writing is pretty crisp and engaging. Hickey uses all sorts of literary devices to get his points across- some with more success than others. Overall, it's the kind of book you enjoy to read. Rare in this genre.
The basic "marketplace" angle he takes on the quality of art is pretty edgey. The art world is pretty dominated by those with intense socialist leanings, so his point of view is a nice contrast. He manages to inform us without being too snotty about it.
Another Guest for the Ideal Dinner Party.......2005-05-15
"Air Guitar" is Hickey's characterization of critical writing, it's direct relationship to its subject(s) being of approximately equal import as a person playing air guitar in his living room is to a rock concert. In the words of Vladimir Horowitz, the concert pianist, it is "the words without the music." That being said, it's damned interesting, all the same, especially when approached this way. Hickey's favorite technique is to take two seemingly disparate things and to discuss the way in which they inform each other, all the while examining the net effect on his life as your basic, educated, ambitious Joe trying to fill the "great gap of time" between birth and death with a mind boggling array of interesting experiences. In this way, they're more 'think pieces' than academic essays. I'll admit, there were moments when my brain hurt; but most of the time, I was enjoying his company and his facility for mental gymnastics -- and the obvious pleasure he took in it personally. I heard of this book on a radio interview (Fresh Air? Diane Rehm Show?) and bought it specifically so that I could have my own personal copy of "My Weimar" -- a spectacular, 'where am I in the grand sceme of things now' type touchstone. Reading the whole book as a part of a recent essay jag, I found it all equally challenging, equally enjoyable.
A great read for makers and lovers of culture.......2004-12-10
Ignore all of the negative press--decide for yourself and read the book (contrary to the opinions of some reviewers, this book is not hard to read). Yes, Dave frequently uses the word "quotidian" (Oh noooo!!!) and the cover may be too much if you have bad "good" taste. And at times, having to learn a new word is required (Is that a bad thing?). I think Hickey would say, that what all of the reviewers on this page are involved in, is exactly what he is arguing for--democratic discussion of the art that does or does not move you.
Great writing indeed, but why the heavy pen?.......2004-07-27
OK, granted, this is this first thing I've read by Dave Hickey, so I may not be giving his overall legacy a fair review. I know he's been around for awhile and has made numerous contributions to many top-notch magazines and journals. This book was recommended to me by a guy in a Williamsburg bookshop, and despite the pretentious accusation of 'genius' slapped on the front cover, I glanced through the book (spotting some obviously great writing) and bought it on the spot.
I was really taken by his unabashed, intimate style for several chapters of the book, until he began his defenses of art dealing and art criticism and his pompous attacks on 'spectators' versus 'participants' (are critics participants?) in his version of the art world. Sorry Dave, this doesn't wash and you know it --- simply announcing that 'Art is not a commodity' simplifies a huge can of worms best dealt with by Debord or even Hakim Bey, not by an art dealer aspiring to belong to this community, rather than getting dirty in the spectating and profiteering himself. When I hit the end of a couple of these verbose defenses of his history of 'dirty occupations', I was left thinking, 'Is it that important you were an art dealer?', or 'Who really cares that you're an art critic?'.
I simply want to be regaled with tales of Sigfried and Roy, or stomp in the boots of Hank Williams, or read Dave's ridiculous opinions on Chet Baker and, most importantly, laugh (or even smile out loud). This is where he is at his best, and consequently where the book shines. It is great writing, indeed, but too bad Dave feels it's necessary to namedrop and pontificate to purge himself from the sea of soulless art critics. Just do what you do best, and write!
uh, now what.......2003-10-10
I'm ready- couldn't wait. Finished a book by Leo Marks who was codemaker for SOE during wwii which was very interesting and surprisingly compelling- even when he described the basics of codes and betrayals. But it tired me out in alot of ways. So Hickey seemed a good way to go: clear and noncant according to reputation. Plus I read an interview Hickey gave to a colorado newspaper where he was spot on even if his stevedoreness was a little droll coming from a man obvious bored with small pieties. Started it last night and I'm already wavering. My initial enthusiasm is slightly dampened by his repeated use of the word "quotidian" and his p'haps too obvious placement of himself as heavy meta dude who hangs with grass in Mexico and in the next breath is able for instance claim that Norman Rockwell is, in fact, a great democratic artist with impressive technical skills. He claims too that every artist he knows admires Rockwell. I always thought it was schlock- I could be wrong- (I think Rockwell leads to Tarantino) but what worries me is that Hickey seems willing to take a perverse position for the pleasure of taking a perverse position. Well that's OK but he isn't Panofsky. He's acrobatic and synthetic- but afterwards like any dance by Arthur Murray you wonder what you have experienced and when.
The book cover is terrible, almost the worst I have ever seen which again suggests a willful postmodern banality offered w/o irony which is the hippest position possible. Says Sean Puffy Combs, Puff Daddy, P Daddy, P Diddy: "its all good." He's a genius too.
Book Description
This book explains the secret ingredients needed to obtain the very best tonal qualities when building acoustic string instruments. It includes an exploration of the tools and equipment needed, the methods to excite tones in the instrument, how to make the necessary changes, and how to achieve consistency and repeatability. The text focuses on tap tuning as it relates to mandolins, guitars, banjos, violins, ukuleles, dulcimers, pianos, and more. The DVD includes demonstrations of the acoustic phenomena described in the text.

black art?.......2007-09-28
After much research and consultation with professional guitar and violin makers, I have concluded that the jury is still out on the benefits of tap tuning for guitar making. One issue is that, unlike the violin world (where there is an acknoweldged standard and good physics for excellent tone) no such standard exists in the guitar world. Indeed, different guitars are supposed to sound different and excellent tone is highly subjective. Some builders I know use tap tuning or other complex methods to try for tonal perfection, others simply tap the plates and listen for a "good" tone. I am not convinced the hair-raising complexity and expensive equipment needed to use Siminoff's method are worth while. Besides, whatever resonant frequencies the components have seperately change completely once the guitar is glued together.
World class guitarist Ed Gerhard made a CD (House of Guitars) on which he used a bunch of junky guitars bought at pawn shops and discount outlets. He didn't even change the strings. Yet the sounds are gorgeous. I think this proves that the skill of the perfomer (given a bascially sound guitar) totally overwhelms whatever contributions high tech plate tuning methods make.
Must Have for Luthiers.......2007-08-24
Another great book for luthiers by Mr. Siminoff. It's a bit techy, but if you want to build great guitars (or any other acoustic stringed instrument), this is the stuff you need to go to the next level. The book will dispel the idea that tap tuning is a "black art" that only the gifted can practice, and put it squarely in the realm of possibility.
Musical instrument construction.......2007-01-20
Good for those of us who build but for whom the application of tap tuning is largely a mystery. Good science foundation by a proven master of the technique.
The "magic" explained........2007-01-16
This tutorial is a great resource for anyone who has ever had less than optimal results building a musical instrument. The "magic" of getting the best sound possible out of an instrument is explained in simple, easy to follow (and easy to repeat) steps. I wish I'd had this information many years ago. Even if you're not a builder, this book explains many things about how instruments "work". I would recommend this volume to anyone interested in understanding how the various parts of an instrument work together, to produce what we hear. This book will undoubtedly have a very positive impact on many instruments over the coming years. Well done Mr. Siminoff!

Motown .......2007-08-13
My husband is love with this bass gautairist, and love this book and DVD combo.
An absolute must for any aspiring bassist.......2007-08-01
First off, this book does an excellent job describing his life and sounds, from "he began playing a double bass" to "he would have the bass all the way up, and the treble half way." This book knows you want to sound like Jamerson, and it tells you just how to do that. What makes the book invaluable are the transcriptions. 49 of Jamerson's songs transcribed for you to play, right there and be able to get the idea of what he was thinking and trying to give when he wrote the basslines.
A book for any bassist.
Amazing!!! It's ALL that!!.......2007-05-04
Thorough, well-researched biography of James Jamerson - the man who changed how musicians view the bass. What an amazing life and a tragic end for a musician of immense talent.
Warning - the section of tunes in the back of this book will make you want to burn your bass!! He was THAT good.
Can't really write more - gotta go practice.... That's how much this book will inspire you to go play. A MUST HAVE for your bass library.
Play bass? Buy this!.......2007-03-20
Amazing learning tool filled with lots of great info and transcriptions.
Great for bass players and motown fans.......2007-01-05

Inlay.......2007-05-13
I didn't have any formal background or knowledge of inlay. This book went through the fundamentals and gave good insight on what to start with and little tricks of the trade. I recommend this book for the beginner.
Very amazing work.......2007-04-11
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for exquisite inlays in wood. The pictures worth it, trust me. Good shoots of very nice work, of different styles. The book also cover how to cut pearl (and also other materials) and inlay by your own, showing tools of the trade and sources of drawings and information. Delight it!
An excellent book.......2007-04-01
I originally bought this for a friend for christmas. After having to ask him if I could borrow it all the time I bought my own. It has great pictures and very complete instruction on the process of inlaying. Having done a few pearl inlays on various instruments I found it very useful. As always though..... practise makes perfect...
The Art of Inlay review.......2007-03-30
I received the book and have found it very helpful. I am considering doing my own inlay on a guitar I am making. This will be most helpful.
Beautiful pictures.......2007-02-17
A beautiful display of unbelievable work that few of us would even attempt. Only the basics on "how to". But maybe that's all there is to it; hours and hours of tedium.

Not your grandfathers NADA blue book.......2006-08-03
This book is great not just prices but a ton of knowledge that is extremely helpful... What to watch for and how to verify it... There are always those that try to get a little more than they deserve in any business... After reading this books hints and tips it is like you have twenty years experience in buying selling trading guitars... Many of my long time guitar experience friends are amazed when I come up with things that even they didn't know... Like serial codes that indentify what country their guitars were made... One of the biggest bang for the buck books I have bought in a long time...
Excellent Reference.......2005-12-27
I use this book as a reference in pricing. I have found it to be a very valuable tool for a starting point on pricing. Also, I have found it to be a very handy reference to locate model information without having to go to several sources. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in collecting or buying vintage guitars.
Great Book, Even If Some Information Is Mistaken.......2005-07-14
THE BLUE BOOK OF ELECTRIC GUITARS is a great book featuring information about different guitars, both old and new. Some information here needs to be taken like the humor in comedy films featuring Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Alyson Hannigan, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and/or Melissa Joan Hart, because instruments that are still in production are listed as discontinued, but it's still a wonderful book.
R is for Ripoff.......2004-06-07
Had to return this stinker fast. Very incomplete book for guitars alone, never mind their value (Which most are valued too low in here). Inexperienced author (not the guy on the cover), some kid. I could not believe how bad it was. Format is terrible, it's painful looking up a particular guitar. A Good book for this type of info is Vintage Guitar Price Guide. It is a four star book (still incomplete) - I've yet to see a five star on this subject.......??
THE NOT SO BLUE BOOK.......2002-09-08
This is one real good book, loads of info, great reading, this book dont make me blue it brightens up my life,A1.

Most intelligent design i've ever seen.......2006-05-10
David Mead has taken all the fat and left the meat in this guide for guitarists of all skill levels. These are the questions you should be asking but didn't know how or what to ask for.
Has missed out on a couple subjects of which I thought was important(like left hand technique). Over all however, this is the most intelligent book to motivate and inspire a guitarist who wants to enjoy the journey to mastering an instrument.I work in a music shop so I am subjected to a whole lot of useless literature on the subject of learning guitar.
i hope it works out for you as well as it did for me.
Not just for beginners.......2005-12-16
If you're a self taught guitarist and you feel like you haven't learned much in the past few months or years...buy this book.
