Book Description

Gus was a lucky dog. Injured and abandoned, he could have become another of the 7 million animals euthanized every year. Then Stephanie Williams entered the picture. A successful journalist, she had been diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer at the age of 30. On medical leave and living alone, she wanted a warm four-legged companion. When she saw Gus's soulful eyes and goofy grin, it was love at first sight: she would rescue him, and he would return the favor.
Just Gus is about how much one dog did to make a dying woman happy — giving tireless love, comfort, and support. This extraordinary story shows how one dog brought joy and hope to a woman's last days.

5 out of 5 stars A Heartfelt Book.......2007-08-16

This book, although sad, makes you feel so good. The devoted love an an unwanted dog helps a dying woman to get through her last two years of her battle with cancer. Written well and with photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Very moving story.......2007-05-14

I absolutely loved this book. It was a quick read, but very moving. Another perfect example of how therapeutic and healing having an animal in your life can be. Bravo!!

3 out of 5 stars Sweet story disappointing book.......2007-03-23

This was a very sweet, compelling story. But I read the book in a metter of 20 minutes, way too short! My fault for not reviewing the number of pages.

5 out of 5 stars A very touching story........2007-02-23

Not many pages but what the book says is very powerful. It makes you wonder how much fate and destiny really does factor in our lives. Hope was given to a woman in the form of a dog and hope was given to a dog by someone who I believe was meant to be the one. They found and needed each other is a under statement. The story will make you laugh and cry. Worth every dime and I would recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars just gus: a rescued dog and the woman he loved.......2007-02-12

a wonderful story, very well told and covered beautifully in photographs. it reminds us that taking just one poor little lost pup from an animal shelter and giving it love and understanding, can so enrich our lives, no matter what our situation is or what lies ahead.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal job on an inspiring subject.......2007-02-22

Nona Kilgore Power signed her book at BookExpo America and bought some of the hero dogs along -- the animals and their handlers received well-deserved respect from people in the long autograph line.

The author has done a fine job collecting beautiful photos of the dogs and interviewing their handlers on what they did at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, Fresh Kills and in Shanksville, Pa. There is undeniable heartache in the fact that so few dogs found bodies let alone survivors. But the search was necessary and the fact that some search teams couldn't hide their disappointment just demonstrates that courage requires forging ahead even if the outlook is bleak.

Some of the notable stories here include that of Piper, a shepherd hero from New Jersey who helped find the bodies of 15 firefighters.

More often, the dogs' role was like that of golden retriever Bretagne (Brittany), from Texas. Her handler Denise Corliss relates in the book, "Sometimes she would leave my side and go sit next to a firefighter. Not just anyone ... she was very deliberate about whom she chose." Often she found a silent firefighter and joined him in a solemn moment.

Corliss remembered how unexpected the dogs' roles were. "One man especially stands out. He started petting Britanny and told me he didn't even like dogs. He knelt down beside her and told me his best friend was missing. His friend really loved dogs and would be very upset if he didn't pet this dog."

Other dogs consoled the families of victims at the Pentagon.

"Dog Heroes of September 11th" is certain to inspire more Americans to get involved in canine search and rescue and to help us remember those dogs, many of whom have retired or passed away in the past five years, who didn't hesitate, despite conditions infinitely worse than those they had seen in training, to search deep voids in hopes of finding people they could help.

If you're a fan of K9 helpers like me, you'll love this book. It was a great look at so many dogs, their trainers, and their stories. Truly great to see and read about all these dogs, their efforts make you feel warm inside :)

5 out of 5 stars Thanks from Bubba.......2007-10-03

I adopted a year old dog that had been rescued by a friend from a puppy mill. Bubba was scared of the world, cowering in his crate for the first week. He was afraid of every noise, scared of every person. I bought the book,"Help For Your Fearful Dog", and proceeded to follow the suggestions of Ms. Wilde. It was slow going at first, but as each day and week progressed Bubba began to make astonishing progress. As suggested in the book, we started to school together (Bubba is on his third class)and it has made all the difference in the world. This book and its gameplan for your fearful dog works. Just ask Bubba.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Owners of Fearful Dogs.......2007-06-24

This is one of my favorite dog behavior books in the last 5 years. As a dog trainer and behavior consultant, I have been recommending this book to my clients as a complement to their training programs. They love it! They are so glad to have a resource that they can share with family members and friends to help everyone better understand their dog. Nicole Wilde does an excellent job of presenting information in a way that is easy for the average dog owner to understand, but still keeps it interesting for the professional dog trainer.

I give it 5 stars and 4 Paws up!

5 out of 5 stars I Love "Help for Your Fearful Dog"!.......2007-05-28

As a professional dog trainer and behavior consultant I have to say this is a "must have" on every professional's bookshelf as well as many dogowner's. As have many of Nicole's books in the past, this one lived up to its name. Not only is it helpful but it is written in "plain English" and with a lot of humor to boot! I now make a habit of consulting the wonderful bullet-point summary at the end of each chapter before I finish my behavior treatment plans just to make sure I haven't forgotten another great suggestion that my clients will want to try out!

I also like how Nicole delves into complementary therapies such as TTouch, aromatherapy, Flower Essences and more.

This book is well worth the price!

Search-and-rescue worker Sarah Patrick and Monty, her talented golden retriever, take center stage in this deft, suspenseful outing. The immensely appealing heroine was introduced as a secondary character in Iris Johansen's previous thriller The Killing Game. Back, too, is John Logan from Face of Deception, the charismatic billionaire whose very personal vendetta against a stop-at-nothing killer pulls Sarah into a high-stakes game of search and destroy.

When Logan's top-secret research station in South America is attacked and his chief scientist kidnapped, Sarah and Monty manage to track the hostage through the jungle and save his life. But that's only the beginning in what turns out to be a series of sadistic and deadly attempts to destroy Logan. Despite Sarah's initial distrust, she comes to respect and ultimately love Logan--which makes her and Monty targets for the killer's vengeance, too. The action moves swiftly across the globe, from the American Southwest to Colombia to Taiwan, and finally to North Dakota, in a tense, dramatic denouement. Johansen manages to explicate her characters' back-stories and illuminate their motivation as she moves the action forward with skillful pacing. Fans of the author's previous suspense thrillers featuring forensic sculptor Eve Duncan won't be disappointed that she plays only a bit part in Johansen's newest; Sarah and Monty are worth a series of their own, and The Search is a terrific beginning. --Jane Adams

Book Description

He strikes without warning....he kills without mercy....he's only just begun....

Iris Johansen, the New York Times bestselling author of The Killing Game and The Face of Deception, delivers a gripping new novel of breathtaking suspense and explosive adventure. It is the story of a courageous woman who is coerced into tracking down a ruthless killer--but as she hunts out her prey with stunning accuracy, she becomes the object of his wrath....

As part of an elite K-9 search and rescue team, Sarah Patrick and her golden retriever, Monty, have a gift for finding what no one else can--whether it's a survivor buried alive by an earthquake or the skeleton of a murdered child. But their latest assignment is not like the others. This time Sarah is being forced to take part in a deadly mission...by a man who knows enough about her past to ensure her cooperation. A man who won't take no for an answer.  John Logan is used to getting what he wants, and what he wants now is Sarah's help. His top-secret venture has been sabotaged, its facilities destroyed, and its handpicked staff massacred. The sole survivor is being held for ransom. Logan knows that the only way to save the man--and the secrets he holds--is to find him as soon as possible.

Smart, tough, and uncompromising, Sarah is furious when she is strong-armed into joining Logan on his search. And once she takes the perilous assignment, she realizes that Logan's promises that she and Monty will be safe may not be enough to protect them.  Because a killer is devising a sadistic vengeance...and he may soon find use for Sarah.  Racing against time to stop the bloodshed before more victims are claimed, both Sarah and Logan will look straight into the heart of true evil. And when the killer's search for revenge finally ends, no one will ever be the same again....

2 out of 5 stars Must love dogs and cheesy romance.......2007-03-28

Do you like romance novels? Do you call your dogs your babies? This is the book for you. The thriller aspect of this book is far overshadowed by the romance portion, and the annoyingly repetitious mentioning of the dog could possibly drive most readers over the edge. This was my first Johansen novel, and it most certainly will be my last. Two stars for actually wrapping up the story without leaving too many loose ends.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A logical approach.......2007-09-26

In training any dog, the biggest challenge always is how to 'connect the dots' in the dogs mind for what you want to see repeated and ignore what you don't want repeated. You then move on to giving the dog space to make his own choices based on what you taught him. This book fits perfectly into the philosophy.

I have owned two purebred dogs. Field Springers and Border Collies. Both breeds I had to trust to make their own decisions at one point as both had to ultimately operate off a lead. Establishing that connection is key with any dog to keep them safe, and to keep the enjoyment factor high. I give high marks to this book for making this point.

I disagree with a previous reviewer that this is only about German Shepherds. Certainly the pictures are, but anyone who has ever trained a dog should know that personality, drive, and disposition are all factors in training and that trumps breed every time. If the dog is interested he/she is limited only by his ability to smell.

The strongest part of this book is that it begins with simple puzzles for the dog, then offers more complex puzzles as they gain confidence. Like the writers, I agree that the dog has to want to do this. For my border collie it is now a passion. What I used to call 'hide and seek' with my dog has now jumped to a different level thanks to this book.

I'm grateful to the reviewers of this book who gave this such high marks. It made all the difference in choosing the right one. AND, I chose the right one.

5 out of 5 stars Search and Rescue Dogs: Training the K-9 Hero, 2nd Ed........2006-07-01

An excellent book on the role of dogs in rescue. Differentiates tracking dogs from the wider term rescue. Very well written.

4 out of 5 stars if you like German Shepherds..........2005-12-28

This is a really good book. But, if you don't have a German Shepherd than you still might want to look elsewhere. The book can absolutely teach you a lot but the concentration on GSDs will likely grate on you. The bias is such that there is no mention of the fact that the public tends to be frightened of German Shepherds, and that Labradors and Goldens can do the work just as well without the unfair but widespread stigma of Shepherds. Or that Retrievers excel at this work BECAUSE they are retrievers and because they genuinely adore people! Anyway, it REALLY does have a lot of good information, I just can't give it five stars because there are lots of great breeds in the world, many of which are suitable for SAR work. Why discount and ignore them?

5 out of 5 stars Great Search and Rescue book........2005-01-29

This book was great, it helped me be able to learn how to trian my dog to track using the air scenting method. It gives step by step instructions on how to succeed in training you dog to become certified in Search and Rescue. Published by the ARDA you know that the material it contains is up to date and current. The other great feature in this book is that is specializes in ground tracking, air scent tracking, disaster search, avalance search, cadaver search, and water search and rescues. Can't speak more highly of this book, the only book that compares with this book is Search Dog Training by Sandy Bryson.

5 out of 5 stars Search and Rescue Dogs: Training the K-9 Hero.......2004-08-10

A very well written book on the overview of the selection, training and care of the search and rescue dog. The authors provide addtional information on subjects such as how to form a rescue team (unit) and how to train for an actual incident. Wilderness searches, urban disasters, avalanche and cadaver training, and water rescues are all covered, and the case studies of actual missions make this a very interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars Good Dog Mystery-much better than average.......2007-07-27

As the first in a new series, this is very good and very interesting. It is very similar to Virginia Lanier's Bloodhound series. The same type of main character although this takes place in the Smokey Mountains rather than Georgia. This isn't a bad thing since Lanier's books were probably the best in the genre. Like Lanier, the characterization takes second place to the mystery, which I happen to enjoy. Bad mysteries and not enough characterization as in Susan Conant's dog mysteries are too boring.

5 out of 5 stars A great new series!.......2007-06-05

Ms. Ball will grab your attention with the first line of the book, and you won't be able to put it down til you have finished the last page. This is the 1st of a great new series. How can we not love a book with such a wonderful dog featured.

5 out of 5 stars Solid.......2007-05-12

A solid mystery with good characters, good pacing, interesting backstory (more revealed in next book) a likeable protagonist and wonderful overlay of information about search and rescue dogs.

3 out of 5 stars Its a......DOG COZY!!!.......2007-03-20

Travelling outside my regular crime series is always interesting. With this book, Donna Ball's first "Raine Stockton Dog Mystery", I am amazed to find that there is a already a full-blown sub-genre of crime fiction in existence: dog cozies. Donna Ball has apparently written near one hundred other books as well under pseudonyms. It shows. She obviously knows and loves her hounds also and the reader can't help but be drawn in. Her protagonist, Raine, is a dog trainer who is lured back into search and rescue work out of a sense of duty to her community and a missing child. Her reticence is tangible as she battles with doubts about her latest canine companion, Cisco, a golden retriever.

The reader is presented with a carefully thought out set of characters and Ball really does well with establishing her setting, a small community in the Smoky Mountains. She obviously also loves them mountains, because her descriptions have you feeling the mountain air and picturing the colours. The tension she sets up around her feelings for her heroic Cassidy, dead in action and her replacement dog, Cisco - a gift from her sometimes ex-husband Buck - is quite remarkable, I really felt for her. I enjoyed learning about the role dogs and their handlers play in search and rescue and also the different roles they play ie. Raine and her dog do search and rescue, Cisco is NOT a cadaver dog (thankyouverymuch)!

I devoured this book and immediately picked up her next, "Rapid Fire" and will be looking out for "Gun Shy". The three star rating just reflects small imperfections: some of the characterization is a little stock standard (such as Maude, her British 'lady companion') and the writing is a little 'lumpy' ie. it doesn't always flow. However, I believe Ball is really onto a winner for this series, in this genre. Dog lovers are an assured audience, and crime lovers will also wander across it as I did in the never ending quest for 'something to read'. My preference is more hard-boiled (again reflected in my rating), but Ball's work will do very nicely thankyou in the meantime.

It took Ludwig Bemelmans years to think of Madeline's next adventure after the 1939 original Madeline, but he did it, and the result was Madeline's Rescue, winner of the 1954 Caldecott Medal. One day on a walk through Paris (a "twelve little girls in two straight lines" kind of walk), Madeline slips and falls off a bridge right into the Seine. Everyone feared she would be dead, "But for a dog / That kept its head," saving her from a "watery grave." What choice do Madeline and the girls have but to take the heroic pooch home, feed her biscuits, milk, and beef, and name her Genevieve? Sadly, when Lord Cucuface gets wind of the new dog, he decrees that no dogs will be allowed in the "old house in Paris that was covered with vines," and kicks Genevieve out on the street. Madeline vows vengeance, and the girls scour Paris looking for the pup: "They went looking high / and low / And every place a dog might go. / In every place they called her name / But no one answered to the same." As we've come to expect from Bemelmans, all's well that ends well chez Clavel, and young readers will be tickled by this heartwarming, quirky dog story with a surprise finale. 5 out of 5 stars And everyone knows you cannot have a DOG in school............2007-03-25

I read this book to my first grade Friday and showed a Christopher Plummer narrated Madeline video as a follow up.
I'm rather enjoying the fact I bought Madeline sets of class-books and videos years ago in Whole Language and have such wonderful resources to use with my Sheltered Immersion first graders. They really all did think the Eiffel Tower is in Vegas, but I won't go into all the confusion the casinos have brought to my spring attempts to teach the landmarks of the world.

Using books and maps, experiences with video and song, food and visitors I try to build global awareness. Madeline is such a wonderful series as she goes to London, New York and the Wild West ,and just all over. And this series has things I need in teaching reading, rhymes, pattern, interest and motivation plus a charming female model of bravery and wit. Bemelman's made a lovely series. Of all of the versions this one and The Bad Hat (about that irrepressible Pepito) are my favorites.

My love of this particular story is multi-fold. First Madeline falls in the canal showing her spunk. A teacher loves this if only for the "See, what happens," feature. I mean reading that every year is something that brings me infinite pleasure. Then she is heroically saved by a dog. And it was just yesterday a student who reads maybe twenty five words, he screams out God ahead of my saying dog. Reversals at this age, that's what happened but there was more to it than that. Just as I read the book and he sat close enough to see I could look at where he is in a natural way, as a Mom might. That told me he is tracking words and it made sense to him (because God might save you)so he is fitting text to logical thoughts-or we used to say "good guessing" or apprehending. And then I gently referred him to the picture and he self-corrected to say "dog". Perfect.

Yes she is rescued by a charming hound eventually named Genevieve. As a child I was extremely afraid of dogs as one tried to bite my stomach and did make marks at 15 months. I never got quite over the attack. So I had to build, as I do about many things, ways into my living to begin to face my fears and aversions and take on the issue. This book I read over and over as a child to that end. Pretty common I address those same fears with first graders with this text. Way to go at it , not so directly but embedded within story work. This way too, when they bring over the police dogs for the demo every year we've already heard about it via a talk Madeline's Rescue spurred. So that is a great thematic piece. I love to work on "dozens" also at this time with their twelve little girls in those two straight lines as we look at number families. So Madeline moves curriculum. Now another fine feature is the amount of expression one can teach in animating this text. Terrific.
I suppose my greatest love is the pictorial work in this book. By far some of the loveliest plates. Bemelmans has the most charming Paris scenes from Sacre-Coeur to the markets. That alone makes it award winning. And I give it the big hug from first grade. I am working in times now where public education is being destroyed in areas of poverty under "reforms' and I just decided I would teach this and I would allow these children to experience the pleasure of reading. Can you imagine a life where everything is proscribed, where it is all scripted and everyone did the same thing at the same time everyday? Madeline would never allow that. And to the bullies in the systems, I say as Madeline, children shall have their Vengeance.

That of course coming from text where the lovely dog Genevieve, is made to leave by Lord Cucuface the Board Director. Not to worry by books end there is plenty of hound to go around. And with a charming repetition children are laughing with delight at all the night wake up calls.
Do get this for your kids...it's adorable. And I think a little bravery is great to promote in a world full of those who have very little in their desire for position and comfort. In the long run this series has lots to offer a class or home.

3 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-01-20

My 3-year old recently discovered Madeline. While this book did not become a favorite, it was read several times. It's over-sized, so not as easy for small hands- she has to put it on the floor or on a table to look at it as opposed to in her lap.

5 out of 5 stars Miss Genevieve, the noblest dog in France, rescues Madeline.......2006-03-25

By this third book in the series, readers know that Madeline is the smallest one of the twelve little girls in two straight lines who live in an old house in Paris that was covered with vines. They know that she is not afraid of mice and that "nobody knew so well, How to frighten Miss Clavel." In fact, Ludwig Bemelmans accompanies those familiar words with a simplified version of the same scene accompanying the same words from the original story of "Madeline." That is because things happen differently this time, as Madeline slips and falls into the river. "Poor Madeline would now be dead, But for a god, That kept its head."

"Madeline's Rescue" is actually more about Madeline's rescuer, the aforementioned dog that "dragged her safe from a watery grave." Miss Clavel and the other girls take Madeline and the dog home, and when she turns out the light for the night, there is a fight among the girls as to where the dog should sleep. The dog proves to be clever and helpful and is named Genevieve (rhymes with "beef"). Things are happy for six months and then comes the day of the annual inspection by the trustees, and these wretched people declare that "DOGS AREN'T ALLOWED IN SCHOOL" and order Miss Clavel to get rid of "it." They are also bigots (Genevieve is "of uncertain race") and they send Genevieve out into the world.

This is where we learn that we were wrong about the title, because it is not about the rescue OF Madeline but the rescue BY Madeline, Miss Clavel, and the other girls. For it is Madeline who jumps on a chair and declares: "Miss Genevieve, noblest dog in France, You shall have your VEN-GE-ANCE!" This is the best part of the book, because this is where Bemelmans shows his characters searching high and low for their beloved dog in some of the landmark sites in Paris (including Le Pere Lachaise, the celebrated cemetery, where Bemelmans has worked in the final resting places of Oscar Wilde, Rossini, Bizet, Chopin, Sarah Bernardt, Honore Balzac, Hugo, Moliere, Heloise et Abelard, and many more).

But we also love the way Bemelmans plays with his familiar storyline, because in the middle of the night when Miss Clavel turns on her light and says, "Something is not right," she does it not once and not twice but three times this time around. So there is a happy ending and a happier ending. Actually a perfect ending given all of the fighting and the cutest drawing of the twelve little girls in two straight lines. As always, Bemelmans' childlike illustrations are captivating (and I see a touch of Thurber in his drawings of Genevieve). Any kid can draw a face with dot eyes and U-shaped mouths, and they have to appreciate that Bemelmans does not always color within the lines. But for me it is the full color illustrations of the sights of Paris that I like to look at and catch all of the details. I would love to have a pitcher book that just collects Bemelmans' Paris scenes, even without the rhyming text that is another part of what makes these stories enjoyable and classics of children's literature.

5 out of 5 stars A long-time favorite!.......2005-03-06

My sisters and I loved this book when we were small and I'm having fun reading this book to my little one. Poor Madeline, always ornery, never learning, falls into a river and a dog rescues her. It's very sweet to see how the girls fight over the dog but, when she gets out one night and returns, there was enough "hound to go around," as the book says when dear Genevieve has a litter of puppies, one for each girl. This is a darling classic and quite worthy of the Caldecott Award it received.

5 out of 5 stars To the tiger in the zoo..........2004-03-22

If you were to walk up to the first person you met on the street and asked, "Are you familiar with the works of Mr. Ludwig Bemelmans?", you would probably get a funny stare. If, however, you were to walk up to another person on the street and said, "In an old house that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines", you might still get a funny stare but at least they might be familiar with darling "Madeline". Though its author hasn't received much interest over the years, the Madeline books have garnered a great deal of love from many members of the literary world. And of these, the only Caldecott winner was "Madeline's Rescue".

Just as they do every day, the little girls attending a French boarding school (run by the pleasant nun Miss Clavel) take a walk across the Seine. On one day in particular, however, the feisty Madeline (who beyond her near drowning gets short shift in this book) falls into the river and nearly drowns. Thanks to a plucky mongrel nearby, Madeline lives and the dog is adopted by the school. To the dismay of the students, however, several trustees coming for an annual inspection are chagrined that such a dog (a mixed-breed undoubtedly) would be allowed to live in one of their schools. Genevieve (for such is the dog's name) is cruelly turned out into the streets and it's up to the girls to rescue their faithful pup.

The book is ostensibly for children, but I suspect it is far more loved by Paris-adoring adults. As the little girls search for their doggy they walk about a variety of well known Parisien sights. Here they search amongst the patrons of the trendy Deux Magots. Yonder you can see them in a breathtaking search across Le Pere-Lachaise. I ask you, in what other picture book are you likely to see a full quote on Oscar Wilde's tomb (not to mention nods to Chopin, Moliere, Balzac, and more)? Bemelmans has a lovely lilting ear for his own prose as well. Just consider the line...

"Miss Genevieve, noblest dog in France,
You shall have your VEN-GE-ANCE!"

You just can't beat it. On top of that are some wonderful illustrations. Though most of the book is black on white with yellow, there is always the occasional full page spread that is deftly colored in deep greens and dark blues. On the whole, there is much to love in this book. Beloved for more than fifty years now, it shall continue to be just as loved for centuries to come.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting read but a bit overly technical.......2004-09-20

The good: The principles in this book are sound, and much of the instruction is common in many other books that I have read on the subject of training a dog to track. The authors are very knowledgable and seem to present the material in a structured and logical fashion. I believe those interested in tracking titles will enjoy this much more than those of us who are intraested in search and rescue.

The bad: If the authors were to write a book on how to drive a car, they would probaby devote the first 4 chapters on how to build a vehicle from the groung up. My point is while the sections about scent theory are mildly interesting, I think they are a bit overblown and unnecessary. A much simpler discussion would have piqued the interest of the reader.

1 out of 5 stars Not a book worth consideration.......2004-07-18

I WOULD NOT recommend this book to serious trainers wanting to learn more about tracking. The main idea is very blurry and hard to grasp. THe author gives theories and not facts and not very good training for tracking dog. The author has confused the ideal of tracking and air scenting. Even though it says "S&R", this book has a poor approach to it. This book was published in 1982, so much has changed since now in tracking. I truly think this author wanted to make a book more than educate people about tracking.

5 out of 5 stars Very tracking based.......2001-03-07

I think for the overall comment on this book is " It is VERY tracking based". If you are getting it to help you in search and rescue you won't get what you think you are buying (I don't think). If you are getting it for tracking it will probably be your "bible". I really enjoyed the scent theory in the begining of the book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sources of information on canine olfaction........1998-11-23

The first section of this book deals with scent theory and the canine gift of olfaction from a physical and anatomical examination of the dog. This is one of the best references to be found anywhere. The tracking portion of the book is a little weaker, but overall an excellent book!

I have purchased several search and rescue books to guide my training, but this book was used the most during the initial trainings of my Alsatian Shepalute, Citara. I found it VERY helpful in getting my 8 week pup from curious, to knowledgeable about scent. I only wish this author would write a book for the handler to learn about GPS, human tracking, etc., that one must learn to become certified. Easy to read, easy to understand and accomplish tasks. I thoroughly enjoyed it and refer to it often.
