My Ultimate Christmas Story.......2007-03-05
The Red Ranger Came Calling has overtaken every other book, even my now #2 pick How The Grinch Stole Christmas, as my "must-tell" Christmas story. I am not able to read it aloud without tearing up at some point, curiously not always at the SAME point in the story.
This is a tall tale, more accurately the re-telling of a tall tale, and it's poignant message to remember to "look up" when seeking answers. The beautiful story for all ages is matched in brilliance with the artwork of Breathed. I have yet to find a child or adult who doesn't "get" the story and its beautiful moral. One need not be an Opus fan to love this book and appreciate the artistry inside.
Perfect for 5 year olds.......2007-01-19
I'd bought this for myself because I love the Bloom County/Outland series. This last Xmas I needed a gift for a 5 year old boy. Remembered how much I loved this book but on the re-read remembered it brought into play the concept that Santa dosen't exist, then resolves it. As it turns out it arms a kid with some fun mythology to run with. And the art is incredible.
Favorite story.......2007-01-16
This is my favorite Christmas story. The story is great, the pictures are amazing and it makes even my older child think twice. I gave this book as a gift to several neighbors this year and they are all believers now! We read this every year.
Our favorite holiday tradition........2007-01-06
My husband and I discovered The Red Ranger Came Calling when we were dating, and sat on the library floor laughing our heads off. Two kids later, we are still loving this book. It's the only Christmas book that stays on our shelves year round, and the only Christmas book that we are constantly buying for other people. Buy it, and enjoy!
Looking for another cult classic to replace Polar Express?.......2006-12-29
Buy this book and read it. Don't thumb through the pages before reading, just read it from cover to cover and be amazed! This is a de rigueur holiday gift I get for friends with young children, and they have always been amazed with the book and wonder why they (adults) haven't heard about it before. And because it's not a mainstream book it quickly becomes a special family tradition.

One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced.
The Polar Express rings with vitality and wonder.
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
The Polar Express book and CD gift set is a charming collage of enchanting sounds, lyrical words, and climatic storytelling. Read by Academy Award-winning actor William Hurt, author Chris Van Allsburg's children's classic--a winner of the Caldecott Medal--is accompanied by a handsome melody and the sweet sounds of sleigh bells, train whistles, and spirited cheers from hundreds of Santa's elves. The composition stirs the listener's imagination, bringing to life the magic of Christmas. Coupled with a hardcover book (and a special gift from Santa's sleigh), listeners can read along and gaze at luminescent drawings page after page. The Polar Express touches the imagination of those "who truly believe." (Running time: 11 minutes, one cassette) --Cate Bick

A Classic Christmas Story.......2007-05-24
One Christmas Eve a boy laid in his bed, all of the sudden he heard something. He heard a sound so different. A friend once described this sound to him. It was The Polar Express.
The Polar Express tells a fiction story of a boy who rides on The Polar Express train one Christmas Eve. The North Pole is where Santa was a waiting to give the first gift of Christmas. That gift will be given to someone on that train. Everyone hopes it is them but only one, only one can get the first gift.
I bet at one time or another you have all heard this story. It is a classic. The author, Chris Van Allsburg, tells this story so well. He also uses meaning beyond this books reading level. Chris says "Though I've grown old, the bell still rings for me as it dose for the ones who believe." If you read this quote once you will just think it's about believing in Santa. When you read it again and think about it, it could mean anything. It could mean believing in yourself, friends, family, ECT.
Even though a bell dose not ring for all of these reasons still believe, it's the best thing you can do.
The Polar Express By Chris Van Allsburg.......2007-05-23
This is a good book for kids becuase it states that any thing is possible. The genre may be fiction, but it still teaches a valuable lesson. The story is set in modern times and takes place in the winter. The author does a good job at explaining what the scenery looks like, een with out the graphics.Any one who likes christmas of all ages will like this book. The main character seems to be outspoken and mellow.the story is much the same with other books also called
The Polar Express by other authors, but it still teaches a valuable lesson for kids. Overall, I give this book a 4 out of 5
"The Polar Express" awesome book review.......2007-05-23
"The Polar Express" is a timeless story meant for all ages. It forces us to think about the disadvantage of growing up. When it's Christmas Eve a young boy suddenly hears a train whistle outside his window. He is welcomed aboard the Polar Express by the train conductor and many other children ready to depart on a trip to the North Pole. It is there that they will meet Santa and find out who the special child is that will receive the precious first gift of Christmas.
This fantasy story is one of the best-written about the true meaning of Christmas. The realistic details and dialogue more the story along. The style and meaning behind the plot is enough to make you remember it for years to come.
When reading "The Polar Express" all you think about is meeting Santa and discovering the gift of Christmas. Anyone who likes a well-told story with a moral to remember will love this book!
Magic.......2007-05-13
This is such a wonderful heartwarming story. I have read this to my classroom for years and now share it with my own child. Terrific. And of course the illustrations are beautiful.
Great Bargain.......2007-05-08

enduring classic first books for my 6 year old.......2007-01-29
More flat stanley was on his christmas list, and he has spent more hours reading and re-reading the 6 books in this series than on any of his other also much requested christmas presents. He does love his legos but half of the sets are being opened only now, a month on, while these were his evening companions right away -- totally sweet stories with two little boys in a nice family that a beginning reader can relate to.
He finds them more amusing and adventurous than horrible harry or junie B which for the most part are restricted to a classroom environment. He does like those, or Jigsaw Jones etc, but none of them so firmly captured his imagination that he actually chose to read these books rather than request video game time ! the ultimate test!!! ...
Stanley's Christmas Adventure.......2006-11-10
Great addition to the Flat Stanley collection. Stanley really appeals more to 1st and 2nd Graders and children a little older who are reading at a lower level. They are always intrigued about "being flat?"

This beautifully illustrated book explains all the questions kids have about Santa --- how reindeer fly, how Santa can get to every kid's house in one night, etc. Included are fold out pages, Santa's diary, a letter to Santa and many more unique features. My 7-year-old is fascinated by this book. It has really cemented his belief in Santa. I have ordered 4 books to give as gifts and will be ordering more. Book Description
Every December, an envelope from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkien's children. Inside would be a letter in strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful color drawing. The letters told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how all the reindeer scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas's house; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with a troublesome horde of goblins. Sometimes the Polar Bear would scrawl a note, adding yet more humor to the stories. No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by the inventiveness of Tolkien's Father Christmas Letters.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A sweet, very clever idea that the John Ronald Reuel Tolkien fellow
came up with to amuse his daughter. Definitely an interesting book for
little kids, old funny looking spidery handwriting, and all. I suppose
they probably rerelease this every year, with how popular he became
recently.
You don't know what you're missing.......2007-01-11
I am a big Tolkien fan but this book was new to me. It was a thrill to find and a thrill to read. I started over 20 years ago giving a Christmas book to my mother in November. I search for something special every year and the names on my Christmas book list keep growing. (I like to think it's because of my inspired choices.) LETTERS FROM FATHER CHRISTMAS has zoomed to the top of the list. The title doesn't do it justice. It is a marvelous story about Father Christmas, elves, polar bears, goblins and adventure. It also combines a family story and reflects a marvelous and moving sense of place and time. Pure genius. Get it for everyone on your list.
Santa Letters - Letters From Sweden.......2005-12-03
Heartwarming, inspiring, uplifting. I also recommend a service that sends Santa letters from Sweden (but return address reads: North Pole).

Wonderful Stories; Did Not Work in my Classroom.......2005-02-06
While I completely agree with the other reviewers about the beauty and complexity and subtlety of J.R.R. Tolkien's writing in this wonderful collection of his letters and drawings to his children, I tried using this with my middle school 6th graders. They didn't "get" it. Mostly, they thought the story was boring although they found the illustrations "interesting." I ended up buying several different editions of the book, including the one with the letters in envelopes, so that my students could have several different experiences with the text. They never enjoyed it, ever. Perhaps they are at too much of an in-between age and it just wouldn't have been "cool" to like it? As a lover of literature, I was disappointed. As a teacher, I have to wonder if I did something wrong in my presentation of the piece or if another group of students would have reacted differently...
This is based on the original edition........2005-01-12
Most children write letters TO Santa; few get letters FROM Santa (or Father Christmas, as British children call him.) The Tolkein children were lucky; their father was one of the top writers of the 20th C. and a fine--if totally untrained--artist.
These letters are little gems. As the years go on and the Tolkein children got older and more able to follow a complicated story, the letters get more 'literary.' Also, if you will look at the dates, as the situation in Europe heated up, so did Father Christmas' troubles with the Goblins. Children listen to the radio, too, and none of the Tolkein children could have been accused of stupidity; they knew, at some level, that something Very Bad was brewing, and I am sure that seeing that Father Christmas could deal with almost any crisis was comforting to them.
As for the illustrations, JRRT had a wonderful sense of color and line. He was very good at drawing stylized landscapes and interiors. Who wouldn't want someplace like Cliff House? He was less successful at drawing people and animals, probably because he knew very little about anatomy. Still, the portrait of Father Christmas wrapping a package is very fine; his features look somewhat Asiatic. I don't know if it is because JRRT had trouble drawing European round eyes, or if the Tolkein children were old enough to have seen pictures of Lapps and Eskimos and would have felt that such features would be appropriate to a man who lived at the North Pole. Also, the picture of the Polar Bear battling the Goblins to save the Good Children's presents was full of movement and spirit enough that one didn't mind the questionable anatomy; the same could be said of the illustration of the accidental flooding of the English Deliveries room.
If you have children in your life, get a copy. Younger children will love to have these read to them, while older ones will love reading them themselves.
Book Description
Bestselling novelist James Patterson, who has been entertaining millions of Americans for decades, now brings his considerable talent for storytelling to a young audience with a joyful, spunky tale that brings every child's Christmas fantasy to life.
Customer Reviews:
Santa Kid disappoints.......2007-09-16
Just tried to read this story to my 4 1/2 year old. Unfortunately it didn't hole either of our interests. Half way through I just couldn't go on and had to put the book down and pick something else!
Here are the main problems: the story was incredibly thin. An entire page of the story would likely only include 1 or 2 relevant sentences that actually moved the storyline - the rest was all filler, like "pretty cool huh?" and "don't giggle. This isn't funny. Well, sometimes it is", and "all those who want to live at the north pole , holler I WANT TO LIVE AT THE NORTH POLE"
Do you see a pattern? The main character breaks from the story on every page to give pointless comments to the reader, and none of it makes sense (or is even funny.)
the plot is so thin. The villain lands at the North Pole with absolutely no set-up, and each turn of events (and the villain himself) is very implausible. There's just no believability in the motives or events. Yes, I know this is a kid's book, but I've read plenty of great kid's books!
The dialogue is really stale too. like "Not nice." "Not nice at all". This repetitive, bland dialogue just drve me crazy.
Like I said, I only scanned the last half of the book it was so poor. I appreciate that the author was trying to teach the evils of Corporate America to children, but it just didn't come off well. It feels like Patterson wrote this book in 10 minutes.
Beautifully illustrated.......2007-06-19
The story is cute, I've heard this story before he just switched some of the characters. The drawing in this book are superb, totally worth purchasing. The story on the other hand didn't seem to hold my son's interest.
Great family reading.......2007-02-20
This book is a great story to read with your family. It has great values and lessons of life.
SantaKid.......2007-01-27
It was a very cute book. I ordered it becasue it was written by James Patterson. He is my favorite author and I have got all his books most of which I have purchased thru Amazon.

I really enjoyed this story. If you have children this is a great story for bedtime on Christmas Eve!(Or anytime, any age!)

Clement C. Moore's beloved poem about Santa's arrival on Christmas Eve has been illustrated by hundreds of artists since its first publication in 1823. Two collectors of antique children's books have selected a variety of these charming pictures from Arthur Rackham, Jessie Willcox Smith, Thomas Nast, and other renowned children's illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the images are from versions of the poem; a few are from antique postcards or magazines. Source notes for all the illustrations are included. Santa is dressed differently by each artist, but he is always "chubby and plump--a right jolly old elf" who brings joy to all good little girls and boys. This attractive edition of The Night Before Christmas will be enjoyed most by collectors of children's books or lovers of things Victorian. Youngsters who are already familiar with the poem will delight in comparing the different old-fashioned Santas and the children of long ago "nestled all snug in their beds." A charming holiday gift to leave under the tree on Christmas Eve for anyone who believes in the magic of Santa Claus. (Ages 5 to adult) --Marcie Bovetz

The best illustrations for this classic poem I've ever seen! Wonderful large format - perfect for reading aloud.
The holiday spirit........2007-01-10
This book is exactly what I was looking for. The quality of pictures is both nostalgic and whimsical. The well known story is in print even grandma can read! The holiday spirit is alive and well in this book.
Night Before Christmas.......2006-12-04
This is a great book. I have read the one in the Random House Pictureback series. The illustrations in the book are what really stand out. They are colorful and detailed and go great with the writing. They are some of the best illustrations I have seen in a book. This is a great book to read to younger or childern. The story is great but the illustrations are what really makes it a great childrens book.
Wonderful Version!.......2006-09-08
Some of the reviewers seem confused about which version this is. I am referring to the Random House Pictureback version that is illustrated by Douglas Gorsline (ISBN 0-394-83019-9). The version I am referring to is not abridged or censored. It even includes the line about the pipe and smoke.
The illustrations are stunningly detailed and authentic. They remind me quite a bit of the beautiful illustrations in another children's classic "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs". Make sure to look for the cat in all the pictures that take place in or around the house! You will never tire of reading this one to your little one! I will warn you, however, that this book might wear out quickly because you will read it so often!
