Book Description

What is a dangerous man? Most women would answer: one who is physically violent. But abusive behavior is often more insidious. Men who want mothers, not partners, who prey on lonely, passive women, who are mentally ill, addicted, or emotionally unavailable, or who won't go away when asked to leave all fall into this dangerous category. In this book women are encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety, are shown how to choose men wisely, and learn how not to make the same mistake twice. Thirteen chapters cover all the red flags of a dangerous man, offer stories of women's successes and failures dealing with each type, and provide safe ways to get out of a hazardous relationship. Armed with this valuable information, women have the tools they need to cultivate positive and healthy relationships with men.

Wish this book was out years ago! Very good regarding subtle signs (as well as obvious) early in the relationship. Love the Red Alert Checklists.
This is NOT a "man bashing" book, the author invites us to look at ourselves as well. Describes some behaviors that women may have that attract a dangerous man.

This book showed me what I was doing wrong, and it enabled to to avoid other dangerous men - it greatly changed my life. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars eye opener.......2007-05-19

Sometimes we avoid stress by keeping ourself in the dark....however learn that it takes more energy to move around in the dark than the light. The more we know, the brighter the light...the brighter the light the easier it is not to trip on the trash on the floor. The men have issues...we may as gentle women learn to forgive them spiritually, however their behavior is "Trash" and they are acting as if they do not understand the word "Respect"...they don't. The sad part is...the absolute saddest part is...they don't get it....and you cannot teach a person to have a conscious...reading this book helps the light become bright and your life to be easier rather than more stressful. Once you read this you can identify it is "them" with the problem...and your only problem was "Believing in them" and taking their lies for truth. This book does uncover hurtful truths...however a truth is a truth and is there whether you want to believe it or not.

4 out of 5 stars Yikes! I'm so glad I read this book!.......2007-03-07

If you've ever wondered if you're the "crazy one," or why you seem to attract losers, this is a very insightful book.

This book opened my eyes to what a bad situation I was in, and just how bad it could end up. I always suspected that some of the guys I've dated had mental problems but would talk myself out of it. Now I see how important it is to trust these initial red flags and uneasy feelings. Even if your guy is not pathological, if you've got red flags and discomfort, this book wisely advises you to get out fast and why. The unfortunate thing about these dangerous men is that they are so charming, affectionate, intelligent, and desirable at first, that you are long-since hooked before the creep in them emerges. This book gives practical advice for how to recognize potential issues before you're hooked and his personality has changed.

For anyone who's skeptical, no, I did not think this was a male-bashing book or "any guy could fit into those categories." Not so. It even gives a list of traits to look for when analyzing whether yours is a healthy or unhealthy relationship.

It's a quick read and well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars "Truth is light".......2007-01-28

How to Spot a Dangerous Man is a compelling, forthright, no non-sense book which will help the open-minded reader face her relationship/insecurity (among other things) demons. Ms. Brown not only discusses the how's, the why's, but offers insight on how to stop the madness. I just purchased four additional copies to pass on to my daughters and the workbook for myself.

The fact that professional women, older women, previously hurt women are continually falling for dangerous men is eye-opening. The facts are not to be ignored; IF, you want to do something different.

I highly recommend this book for ALL women; young and old.

    Book Description

Tracing an awe-inspiring oceanic route from Boston, around Cape Horn, to the California coast, Two Years Before the Mast is both a riveting story of adventure and the most eloquent, insightful account we have of life at sea in the early nineteenth century. Richard Henry Dana is only nineteen when he abandons the patrician world of Boston and Harvard for an arduous voyage among real sailors, amid genuine danger. The result is an astonishing read, replete with vivid descriptions of storms, whales, and the ship's mad captain, terrible hardship and magical beauty, and fascinating historical detail, including an intriguing portrait of California before the gold rush. As D. H. Lawrence proclaimed, "Dana's small book is a very great book."

    Download Description

Two Years Before the Mast was praised by Ralph Waldo Emerson as: "a voice from the forecastle. Though a narrative of literal, prosaic truth, it possesses something of the romantic charm of Robinson Crusoe. Few more interesting chapters of the literature of the sea have ever fallen under our notice."

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-16

This is another book that I read aloud to my wife as we set about on our own adventure of "Hobo-ing America" in our little Chevy van.
I was thrilled by the fact that they brought their hides from California to the little tanning and leather processing community of Lowell, Massachusetts. I was raised in Lawrence - just down the road.
I picked up this book because it was a travel adventure about sailing around the world. I didn't know at the time that it was a Classic and that it had changed the life and working conditions for seaman at that time. My dad was also a seamen - at a much later date though. He served as a merchant marine during WWII. My wife and I were harboring the fantasy that after we finished our tour of the USA we might then sail "around the world".
    We didn't.
This was a truly great adventure story and it is a true account - not a dramatized rendition. It was dramatic enough as fact. I loved it.
Mr. Dana being the son of a wealthy business man brought a truly conservative approach to the viewing of a sailors life.
William Z. Foster who also gives an account of life aboard commercial wind sailed vessels presents a much harsher view in his book "Pages from a Worker's Life". His account written several decades later also questions the exaggerated conservative notion that "improvements" were actually sustained or made in earnest for the sailors.

5 out of 5 stars The most exciting book ever!.......2007-03-07

If you like adventure and thrill, then Two Years Before the Mast is the book for you. Some parts of this book we will have you sitting on the edge of your seat.

In Two Years Before the Mast Richard Henry Dana went on a ship that was going around the tip of South Americia. From storms in the Atlantic to icebergs in the Pacifac. They were going to California to trade. It was very hard on the sailors.

This book is mostly about adventure an hardships. Richard Henry Dana went on this boat because his eyes hurt because he was reading too much. He took a break but he did not know what lie ahead of him.

I would highly recommend this book because it is very exciting and thrilling. I would recommend thi book to readers that love excitement.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for the Nautical Library.......2007-02-13

Two Years Before the Mast is a genuine classic -- a must-read for anyone interested in ships and the sea and in American maritime history.

4 out of 5 stars A great tale - if you can get through the nautical lingo........2006-09-03

This book is a great tale of both adventure and daily life both on land and sea, if you can make it through the sections full of nautical lingo. For example: "We were going along with studding-sails set on both sides, when, as we came round the point, we had to haul our wind, and took in the lee studding-sails. As the brig came more upon the wind, she felt it more, and we doused the sky-sails, but kept the weather studding-sails on her, bracing the yards forward so that the swinging-boom nearly touched the sprit-sail yard." (page 75).

The book has many pages full of such very detailed description, which I eventually just skimmed, or skipped, with no loss of enjoyment of the rest of the narrative. If the reader can find their own way to navigate the sailing terminology, the rest of the book is fascinating. The author describes daily life on a sailing ship in that age as a mixture of wonderful and horrible experiences. Likewise, he describes, in fascinating detail, what life was like in coastal villages like San Diego and San Francisco when they were just hamlets with a few houses and a church.

Reading this book will give you appreciation for what early settlers and mariners had to endure, and will probably make you appreciate little things like toilets, clean water, dry and warm clothing, and decent food a whole lot more that before you read it. The adventure of "doubling" the Cape Horn crossing is, simply, incredable and it is worth reading the book for this alone.

3 out of 5 stars Chronicles Of An 1835 Merchant Sailor.......2006-08-03

First, Richard Henry Dana was the sole author of Two Years Before the Mast. There are currently a half dozen books in print in which co-authors attempt to share credit for Dana's work. Dana dropped out of Harvard and signed up for a two year voyage as a common deckhand. This class of sailor sleeps in a communal room forward of the main mast called the forecastle, or "focsle," thus the "...before the mast" in the title. Showing the attention to detail which would eventually get him through Harvard and make him a Boston attorney, he kept excruciatingly detailed notes, which he appears to have resisted editing.

At first the reader wonders why Dana wants us to know what ropes are used to hoist, trim, tack, reef, and lower each sail. Moreover why we need to know how to do it in fair weather and in foul. And at night as well as day. We wonder why he wants us to know the monotony of the stale food and the pauper's lifestyle the sailor lives.

We start to get an inkling of the purpose if the realism when Dana describes the brutal and dictatorial regime under which the sailor is governed. The editorialism which creeps gradually into the book shows the brutality with which the sailor is treated. By the end, Dana has evolved into a persuasive advocate for reform. He is not a radical by any means; sailors who act more or less as animals must be handled more or less as animals. Dana's prescriptions are relatively modest, incremental, and thoroughly considered.

We are left with one man's version of Junior Year Abroad, and it shames the frivolity of the contemporary academic traveler. There may be easier ways of learning the handling of square-rigged ships, and there may be more adventurous sabbaticals, but none come with prose approaching photographic realism. And it is Dana's alone, and "co-authors" should be ashamed.

I picked this book up when I purchased RA2, and 3 hours after buying it, I returned it. This book is useless for anyone that can play and be successful at a video game. And for those of you who can't, it's called a trainer and it lets you make the game much easier and go by quicker. This is a book is a bomb.

This book was useful to me and, possibly, you in many many ways. First off, walkthroughs for all solo missions and stragy for multiplayer. Second, unit and building reviews. Third, FAQ's and many other secret and helpful pieces of info. Get this book.... It's worth it.

Hey guys, howz everyone doing? Well I brought this book a week or so ago becuase I'm in love with the game, and it really is a good book. Although I've done all the missions several times without the help of the book, it certainly gave me some good tips. If your a RA2 nut like me you won't need the stratigies but they're still fun to read! Colour photos would of been nice but u can't have everythiung I suppose! 5 out of 5 stars An excellent book, like all of Prima's game guides.......2001-04-01

I think I am the only adult who has written a review for this book in the Amazon.com website. I don't think kids would need to read this book because they seem to find out everything about the game just by playing it for hours on end! Well, I enjoy real time strategy games too, but can't afford to spend the same amount of time as my younger colleagues on them. This is where Prima's guide comes in. It provides a quick overview of all the elements of the game, walkthroughs for all the missions, and some general strategy tips, exactly what is needed in a 3rd party manual. It is well-indexed too so I can find what I need quickly. The manual is fairly small, but this is because the game is not so deep as some others, like Age of Kings for example.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-08-29

This is the second Albert's book I have, and I have only good words to say about it (again).
This opening book is close to perfection.
It made me choose this opening simply because of this great book.
He explains the opening very well, not just lines (and in fact the lines are the last chapters of the book), but mainly ideas.
He shows why before the how (or like he says - he teach you how to fish instead of giving you fish).

Lots of diagrams so you can handle without a board.
    Lots of new lines (novelty).
Lots of games both for black and white.

I switched to it as a response to e4 (used to play accelerated Sicilian dragon), and even thought it is not easy line, and I did encountered some unpleasant position in my first games, once you get to know it, it is quite good.

highly recommended for anyone who is not master of the pirc.

3 out of 5 stars Detailed coverage but lacks "good book" value........2007-08-10

This is probably a very good book. I have tried on many occasions to learn more about the Pirc by studying this book. It has great ideas. I just thought it was very verbose and lacked instructional value. I gave it three stars for the potential is has. I will use my Botterill book instead.

3 out of 5 stars A model of not maintained promises.......2007-06-15

This book could be considered, in my opinion, as a model sample of non maintained promises.
The first half of the book is absolutely amazing: it starts with a lot of promises (like it or not, this is what every chess player wants from a chess book: the illusion to improve both his play and rating after reading it); then comes a section full of excellent explanation, which brings the reader to the third and final part in a very good mood: "ok, I undestood everything, now let's go to the theory and crush every white guy who dares to play 1. e4 ... with my Pirc letal weapon".
But now comes the bad news: the analytical part is completely disappointing. First of all, the repertoire is the same tired choices that other authors propose: against the Classical, the most boring middlegame positions I've never seen in my life; against the Austrian, the same, usual, Seirawan lines that, with best play by black, leads to a forced perpetual. To be honest, I'm really tired of this stuff: only to demonstrate theoretical equality, those authors ask me to play this kind of chess.

I rate this book 3 start because of the first part (which is really excellent) otherwise I'd given it 1 star.

    4 out of 5 stars Pirc Alert.......2007-06-08

I'm NC player. I find this book very interesting and useful. The explanations are very clear and the authors provide the Pirc's ideas and not rote memorization moves only

5 out of 5 stars It does a thorough job.......2005-04-04

I got this book from the library this spring to explain tornadoes to my 4-year-old son. It covered everything it needed to in one small and attractive book. The pages are not too long that he was not able to sit through it, and the illustrations are attractive and provoking. First it explains what a tornado is, where they occur, how they occur, when, and finally what to do if you encounter one. It does touch on the damage that a tornado causes, including speaking briefly about deaths. But I thought it was done in a straightforward manner and did not dwell on the topic or sensationalize it. I definitely think kids from the age of 4 and up could handle all the information in this book.

I was most impressed with the fact that not only does it describe the scientific aspects of tornado formation in simple terms, it also discusses tornado safety by giving kids several examples of where they might be when a tornado hits and the best place to take cover for each situation. While the publisher lists ages 4-8 as the targeted reading level, I found with our library groups at school that our 9-11 year olds were very interested in it as well. If you have younger children and live in an area where tornadoes are a real threat, I highly recommend using this book to introduce tornado safety.

I'd give this 6 stars if I could! I work with struggling readers who will find any excuse to NOT read, but when it comes to this series they beg for more time to read the books!

Give it a try for the "do I have to" readers.

I have a ten year old who is struggling with reading. He is caught in the cycle of reading is no fun because he doesn't do it well, and the only way to improve is to read more, but he doesn't want to read because it is no fun. This series breaks that cycle. He reads and re-reads these over and over and I have noted a marked improvement in his skills over the last few weeks.

    Book Description

The inspiration for Dr. Strangelove! In the late-'50s post-nuclear war tradition, Peter George's (Peter Bryant's) tale of men struggling to get the bomb off took quite a turn before reaching the screen. Still, it's the author's best-known work, and at one George was hired by Kubrick to transfer his work to celluloid. First published 1958.

2 out of 5 stars Good Story, Terrible Printing.......2007-08-23

I have just started reading the novel but am having trouble finishing it. The story itself is actually quite good. I like the author's style more than anything but this edition of the novel is the most unprofessional book I have ever read. I am not even half way through it and have found more spelling errors than one could believe. Judging by the numerous whole-word replacements like, "...truth [trust] no one..." and "... 200 miles from the short [shore]..." and whole word omissions, it seems that the novel was written on Microsoft Word. There are also time conflicts with confusion between a.m. and p.m. and events that must have taken place after other events given a time before those events.
I myself am a terrible speller and usually read right over such mistakes, but these are so numerous and so obvious that I cringe thinking about all those I missed. They are a distraction to the story and show the poor quality of the editorial staff.
If you can find an earlier printing of this book, buy that copy. So far, it is worth the read, but not the frustration.

5 out of 5 stars A great story well written. Must read........2007-03-05

Red Alert (originally published as Two Hours to Doom in Gt Britain) is an excellent book: gripping, tense, written in good, economical, and forceful language, and (to this very civilian layman, at least) marvellously realistic. I can see why Stanley Kubrick bought the film rights to this little novel: its storyline alone is well worth the price of admission, and with Kubrick and Terry Southern's collective imagination working it up to the screenplay for Dr. Strangelove, it could not miss as a film. Peter Bryant/Peter George did exceedingly well with this book and it remains an excellent read. My only criticism is that the current edition issued for sale has not been sufficiently proofread and edited: there are some typos and omitted words in the text. If the present publishers would amend these minor flaws, this little book would be that much better to read, very good as it is anyway. The Cold War may be over, but this story set in the late 1950s is still a cracking good read. Nothing like a thoroughly good and credible Cold-war thriller to fire the imagination and to get the blood racing. A five-star+ rating.

5 out of 5 stars Intentions of the enemy group!.......2006-07-25

This book places the reader at the center of the Cold War as it becomes hot.
Taut prose, suspense and written by someone with a military assessment background.

1 out of 5 stars Build lots of tanks.......2002-01-29

Did you read the title to this review? Good, now you don't need to buy the official RA strategy guide - that's all the good advice it offers, other than absurdly obvious things like "Don't kill the friendly medic" and "Avoid the flame turrets".

If the whole guide was full of examples like those two, it might be worth buying for amusement factor. But no. Those 240 pages aren't just awful, they're uncreatively awful. The mission walkthroughs give you no specific strategies and are indistinguishable except for the maps.

This book also has pep talk. "Give 'em hell, commander comrade comrade commander." This is a STRATEGY GUIDE for crying out loud! I don't want to hear about how we need to give 110% and there's no I in Team. But then, since there isn't much offered in the way of good tactics, maybe this guide could be seen as a self help book rather than a guide.

The list of units and structures was copied from the instruction manual, unchanged except for:

-the addition of unit stats that would be useful except they're incomplete
-the insertion of the phrase "eh, comrade?" in key places
    -larger font and spacing

Okay, the maps. The maps aren't bad (I don't see why people want them in color; it would be pretty, sure, but would make the book cost three times as much and wouldn't help any). I liked the maps because I got to see what was going on in all those areas you aren't able to explore (aha! so there was a bunch of snow there!) and because I got to see the computer's starting forces (not that that's useful, I just liked to see them). They also had some use in forming my own strategies.

This is the worst strategy guide I ever read. The best strategy guide I ever read, somewhat ironically, is the unofficial RA guide, superior to this one in every respect except for the maps.

3 out of 5 stars Reasonably good, could have been better.......2000-03-18

As gaming guide for bellaonline.com, I spend a good portion of my time testing games and reading the strategy guides to see if I missed anything. I *love* Red Alert as a game, but this book doesn't quite do justice to it. The maps they give you are pretty hideous, and the descriptions they give of the solutions to missions are often extremely vague. I realize it's hard to do a walkthrough for a game like this, but there are usually methods that work very well for a mission, and they simply don't give you those details. The first 60 pages are wasted on troop reviews! I like their tip system, and feel they were on the right track ... they just didn't quite get there.

5 out of 5 stars Save your child's mental health and your sanity.......2007-03-09

Parents, breathe a sigh of relief! If you have been told that your child may be ADHD, but you are reluctant to accept that diagnosis, you may wish to consider that your child is an "Active Alert Child" (Budd, 2003). Try reading this newer theory which discusses alternative approaches to parenting (and teaching) your child before resorting to medication. You will learn that your child has special traits and can make positive contributions to society.

    5 out of 5 stars Enormously helpful.......2005-06-15

Before I read this book I was firmly convinced that my 3-year-old daughter was an ornery mule and there was little I could do about it. If my husband and I even gave her the impression that we were about to help her with whatever she was doing, she'd swat at us and yell for us to go away. Now I understand that she needs to touch to learn, and this book has given us tools to use when she starts school. We've been worried that she would be labeled ADHD because she's constantly moving, though, when she's interested in something, her attention span is longer than many adults. I'm also grateful to feel that I'm not just an overly fretful mother. So often when I tried to explain our difficulties to other mothers I would hear, "all kids are like that," and I could clearly see on the playgrounds and in the stores that not all kids are like that. Many of them can walk in a straight line, sit still to eat, and respond when their name is called! Also, now I know why my daughter's reactions to most standard parenting advice has been the exact opposite of the desired result (i.e. rocking her to try to get her to sleep irritated her - I can see now it was too stimulating for her). After reading this book, I've gained enlightenment as to why she behaves as she does, and I'm more hopeful that we can help her channel all that energy to healthy, positive goals.

    5 out of 5 stars Invaluable, amazing, a god-send.......2002-05-09

When I first picked up this book and looked through it, I thought "when was this woman in my house?" We've clung to it like a lifeline. It was such a relief to know it wasn't us, there wasn't 'something wrong with him', and that there were ways to cope. I've recommended this book to several people who have been equally thrilled. I've been able to use things learned to help him in school, help him with transition times, and head off some of the explosions. Life will never be calm and peaceful with an active alert in the house, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing!

We've been especially blessed to become part of Linda's client base and meet with her several times/year. Let me just say, she's amazing!!!!!! Buy this book!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars A lifesaver!.......2002-02-07

The key to good parenting is understanding your child, but that's not very easy when your child is so different from "average" children. Linda Budd not only helps you understand this enigma you gave birth to, but she helps you see that the traits that frustrate you the most are actually good, once harnessed. You know this book is for you if: your baby's first year was a nightmare of no sleeping and constant wailing, your child has more energy than a power plant, your newborn seemed very alert and aware of his/her surroundings, other people think your child just needs a good spanking, you've seen other people's small children sitting quietly listening to a story and thought to yourself, "What's wrong with those kids?" I guarantee you will find relief in this book, and a better understanding of your child and how to make your home life a lot smoother. Two thumbs way up!

5 out of 5 stars Living with Active Alert Child.......2002-01-16

Before you believe the "experts" that your child is ADD or ADHDand put you child on their "drugs" PLEASE read this first. We have a very, very active 5 year old who is very intelligent. We both were in the same catagory as children and survived ( so did our parents and teachers!). We did not cave in to everyone's advice and kept digging. There is a 20 question list in the first chapter, please read that first and you'll know you are not alone, and the book has alot of common sense approaches and good definations of how to and what you are in for. I was relieved and impressed and have further firmed my resolve to hold my child away from the medicines that misdianosis these days which harm our children more than anything.
** Since using this book, He has done wonderful so far in first grade, and almost has done away with his paraprofessional in the classroom. ( I also used Teaching your Child the Language of Social Success, by Marshall Duke) Thanks!
