Book Description
This is a cross-cultural Christmas tale of a child's self-discovery with introductions to folk characters, traditions, and a bit of language of a far-away country. A pronunciation guide is included: The Snow Maiden's Russian name, Sne-GUR-och-ka, is a guaranteed giggle. The lesson of the fable-like story is to "be yourself and do the best you can."

Russian Snow Maiden.......2007-08-05
Great book to introduce you to Russian Christmas traditions and a some common words. The illustrations in this book are great and done in the Russian style (The illustrator was is a Russian Artist).
This story blends the Western and Russian traditions of Christmas in a way that children and parents will enjoy year after year.
Beautiful and inspiring.......2006-01-04
This is a beautifully illustrated book about how a young Russian girl helps Santa Claus. It is a wonderful introduction to the variety of ways that Christmas is celebrated in other countries, but retains enough focus on the US to make it interesting to young Americans. My daughters love the book and I enjoy reading it to them as the story is interesting for both children and adults.
A First Rate Story with Caldecott Quality Illustrations.......2005-12-18
In this engaging story, the Snow Maiden's dilemma can be appreciated by all ages. At the point where the Snow Maiden makes a significant contribution to Santa's inventory, she gains self confidence and happiness. A perfect book for reading aloud over the Holidays! Children and adults will delight in exploring the plentiful illustrations.
Review written by Jessie Palmer: Grandmother, elementary school teacher, and reading specialist.

Book Description
In How Mrs. Claus Saved Christmas, Jeff Guinn combines solid historical fact with glorious legend to deliver another heartwarming holiday book for the whole family.
It's 1620 and Mrs. Claus's dear husband is off in the New World planting the seeds of what will become a glorious Christmas tradition. Meanwhile, Mrs. Claus has chosen to stay in England, where the first signs of a dangerous threat to Yuletide cheer are in evidence. The Puritans have gained control of Parliament and appear determined to take all the fun out of Christmas. But Mrs. Claus knows that it's time for serious action when, in 1647, a law is passed by Parliament that actually punishes anyone who celebrates Christmas. Using as its springboard the actual events of a day in 1647 when ten thousand peasants marched through the streets of Canterbury demanding their right to celebrate a beloved holiday, How Mrs. Claus Saved Christmas is rich in historical detail, adventure, and plain ol' Christmas fun.
Customer Reviews:
Great Christmas Read .......2007-07-18
All of Jeff Guinn's books are centered on Santa Claus and his real life persona. The books are absolutely vivid and striking. The Autobiography of Santa Claus was the better of the first two books, but How Mrs. Claus Saved Christmas was also great. The books detail real history and interwine facts of Santa Claus and his life into the historical facts. It's a great read for Christmas time and for anyone who ever believed in Santa Claus.
An excellent sequel to a beloved book.......2006-12-16
In this sequel to his classic book The Autobiography of Santa Claus, Jeff Guinn tells a new tale of Christmas in peril. In the first book, Guinn took the historical facts about St. Nicholas and the various people who contributed to the Santa Claus legend around the world and wove them into a beautiful life story. In this book, he continued that tradition, taking the troubles of the English Civil War as a backdrop for a tale about Santa's wife, Layla. Staying behind in England to manage their affairs there while her husband begins his time in the American colonies, Layla finds herself at the forefront of a movement to protect Christmas from a Puritan reformation that wants to stomp out anything reminiscent of Catholicism in England. Layla is forced to flee to Canterbury, where she lives for a time with friends Alan and Elizabeth Hayes and their daughter Sara. As Oliver Cromwell amasses power in London, Layla and her friends concoct a daring plan to show Parliament that the people of England will never stand for Christmas being stolen from them.
Like The Autobiography of Santa Claus, this is a beautiful story that weaves together fact with fantasy to produce a thoroughly satisfying tale. In fact, this may even be a superior book to the original, in that it has a much more cohesive story. By necessity, Autobiography reads like a person's life story, hitting the high points but not really holding onto a compelling narrative thread to push the plot along. This new book is focused on a relatively brief period of time instead of the thousands of years in the first book, and on a single issue -- the attempt by the Puritans to squelch out Christmas in the 1640s. As such, it's a much stronger book simply from a storytelling standpoint.
Like the original, this book is written in 24 chapters -- making it quite convenient for parents to read a chapter a day to the little ones in December, finishing up on Christmas Eve. I don't have any kids myself yet, but I have every intention of doing this once I do. I also just found out that Guinn has produced a third book, The Great Santa Search, and I'll definitely be rushing out to get my copy before the holidays are over.
A charming piece of fiction that will certainly delight and educate all!.......2006-11-29
The year is 1620. While Santa Claus is off in the New World aka America, getting a new group of people interested in the spirit of giving, and what is now known as Christmas, Mrs. Claus has been left behind in England. It's a lovely country, but when signs of officials banning all types of Yuletide cheer begin popping up everywhere Mrs. Claus looks, she realizes that it's time to take matters into her own hands. It's bad enough that the Puritans have gained complete control of Parliament, but when, in the year 1647 a law punishing any and all who celebrate Christmas is passed, Mrs. Claus realizes that Christmas is in true danger, and it's up to her, without the help of her beloved Saint Nick, to save the marvelous holiday before it's destroyed forever.
I read Jeff Guinn's THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF SANTA CLAUS when it was first released, and devoured every word of it. Yet I had no idea he would be able to weave the exact same sort of magic with its sequel HOW MRS. CLAUS SAVED CHRISTMAS. As with the first installment in the Christmas Chronicles, Guinn has put together a delightful holiday fiction tale, and laced it with rich historical facts - including the marching of ten thousand peasants in Canterbury who protested their right to celebrate Christmas in the year 1647. A charming piece of fiction that will certainly delight and educate all!

Could not put it down!.......2005-12-01
I adored this book! I thought at first that this book would pick up where the last left off, but instead it focuses on Layla's battle to restore Christmas to England in the 1600's. The story was extremely engrossing, and very sweet and even a little sad. I was having trouble getting into the Christmas spirit this year, and this was just the push I needed!
Wonderful holiday book.......2005-11-30
If you liked Guinn's autobiography of Santa Claus you will love this book. The story moves smoothly through the ages and has many links to history that, with a little imagination, you can find believable. The characters are delightful, making it a joyous holiday read. This one is a keeper--it won't go off to the half-price store at the end of the year!

Book Description
Something wonderful happened to Nick Kelsh last Christmas Eve. He became Santa Claus. Donning appropriate red suit, boots, and beard, he knocked on a friend's front door and brought magic to the gathering. "Who are you?" they all asked, and he told them the truth: "I am Santa Claus." When the festivities were over, Kelsh knew that he had discovered the greatest gift of all-and now he'd like to share it with you.
In How to Be Santa Claus, Nick Kelsh shows you how simple it is to become the Big Man. Written in the same witty, user-friendly style this lighthearted manual takes you step-by-step through the process. How to Be Santa Claus is the perfect book to melt away holiday stress. Spend a day as Santa and you will learn-as Kelsh did-that a thoughtful gesture is the greatest gift of all, for giver and receiver both.
Customer Reviews:
A bit disappointed.......2007-01-20
This was the first book I bought from Amazon, and I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting the book to be a how to manual on physically getting into the character of Santa. I have been performing as Santa for 20 years and was looking at enhancing it a bit further. Even with taking a Santa class at a clown convention, I wanted more. I have not been able to attend one of the fine Santa Schools for all things Santa, yet.
What the book was lacking, it is very good at the Mental portion for the belief of Santa and getting in the spirit of Christmas. The photos and content based on mental spirit is good, hence a 3 stars. I would have added a byline to the title, to let one know it's the spirit not a "how to treatise" on putting the physical character together.
Touching the hearts and funnybones.......2007-01-01
This book is the perfect gift for a Santa or Santa to be or just a holiday heart toucher. I send these books out with my Santa Suit rentals (own a costume shoppe) to give an edge to my Santas helpers. It is simply wonderful.
Fantastic.......2005-12-13
This book is great fun. This book makes me want to go out and get a Santa suit. It's whimsical and fun and reminds me of the excitement I felt as a child.
Imagine letting go of all those holiday stresses and embracing the playfulness and joy of Christmas like you did as a child. Imagine having fun and sharing that same fun with others.
If nothing else, this book made me imagine new possibilities.
Wait until they see me at the office party, and my Dad's house, and...
Great holiday book!.......2004-11-23
After reading this book, not only will you feel in a happy holiday spirit, you'll have the urge to put on a santa suit & go around spreading cheer to others. In fact, I think I will!
An EXCELLENT quick pick me up!.......2001-11-28
I found this book quite by accident while strolling around Pottery Barn, I picked it up and started to read it, a little while later I was in a better mood and NEEDED to have this book. Working in retail in this crazy season, one tends to forget the joys of the holiday, this book certainly bought them back. I not only got this book for myself but, picked it up for some others that needed some holiday pick me up's:)

LOVE it!.......2007-07-13
This book is a hoot! My 5 year old loves it, I thought it was hilarious, and my husband thought the illustrations were great, too. I intend to buy additional copies--for my adult friends.
Witty writing and wonderful illustrations... fun for all!.......2007-06-25
We bought "How Murray Saved Christmas" for our annual Christmas book (year 11). The author has created a fun story with witty writing and wonderful illustrations. Kids and adults are sure to find this book filled with Christmas fun! This is not your typical Christmas tale, but it is sure to become a family favorite! Give it a try.
I also recommend Mike Reiss' "Santa Claustrophobia" ; you will not be disappointed!
Not your ordinary Christmas Tale.......2005-12-17
I have received everything from quiet snickers to loud guffaws, as I read this book to the students in my school. What a "thinking person's" twist to the Santa Claus story! This can be read again and again, each time picking up more clever turns to the Christmas night adventures of Murray and his elf buddy.
Married to a Murray.......2005-10-27
I bought this book for my then-boyfriend, "Murray," several years ago. He immediately went out and bought all of the copies he could find and gives them to any friend that has a kid. I have read it the past three years to my class, either 4th or 2nd grade, and it is hilarious! A very lively holiday book to make everyone around giggle!
Made Me Miss New York.......2005-09-30
I read this book to my students and they loved it almost as much as I did. Reading it with a Brooklyn accent really added life to the text. Not that it needed it. I teach Kindergarten through 6th grade, and each class enjoyed it for different reasons. I pictured Murray being from New York, and what a wonderful place to be during the holidays.

A Wish to Be a Christmas Tree
ASIN: 0689806973 |
Book Description
If you think Santa Claus came into the world sporting a red suit and a white beard, think again. Santa wasn't always the jolly, overweight, gift-giving fellow that we now know and love. He tried his hand at all sorts of different jobs, including postal worker, zookeeper, circus performer, and even chimney sweep, but each of these presented a problem that got in his way. It wasn't until he was lucky enough to meet a friendly bunch of elves that Santa found his true calling...and the job of his dreams.
Stephen Krensky's understated text and S. D. Schindler's charming illustrations come together to create an imaginative and funny tale that proves even the best of us have to try, try again.

Santa's early years.......2007-08-26
My kids absolutely love this book. Every year when it's time for Christmas books to come out, this is the first one they want to hear, and they want to hear it almost every night, sometimes twice. It also answered a lot of my own questions about how someone like Santa got started in his particular line of work.
Wonderful Holiday Book.......2006-02-25
This book is wonderful for children of all ages around the holidays. It provides a cute explanation of how Santa got his job through trial-and-error of other jobs that he wasn't successful at.
A great addition to an eclectic Christmas collection.......2005-11-28
This is one of our favorite Christmas bedtime stories; it's short, funny and unique in its perspective on a well-canvassed holiday. Neither cloying nor maudlin, How Santa Got His Job is a delightful revision of the Santa myth. Its subtle humor is slyly reinforced by the illustrations - I especially like the jealous expressions on the faces of the zoo animals as Santa pals around with the reindeer! Parents will catch many little flourishes that children miss, but that makes the act of reading the story fun for everyone.
Expose: A Real, Behind the Scenes Santa Story !.......2005-10-29
Boy oh boy - you're going to like this one! It gives you the inside scoop about how Santa Claus came to be the Jolly Old Fellow that you all know him to be! For the first time ever, you'll learn about Santa's career ups and downs, his good times and his bad times, and how on earth it came to be that he started delivering presents to all the world's children - as he does 'til this very day! If your kids are getting to that question-asking age - this book will arm you with some wonderful "facts" that will help the kids to understand what makes Santa Claus such a magical man!
Awesome!.......2003-12-12
Excellent book. I am a seond grade teacher and this book teaches a plethora of things: Sequencing, perserverence, building on skills, and many more. Plus, the kids loved it! I am ordering them for all of the children in my family!

Book Description
Discover the magic inherent in the true story of a man who overcame relative obscurity in a small Mediterranean city and became a cultural icon the world over. In Wonderworker: The True Story of How St. Nicholas Became Santa Claus, Msgr. Vincent Yzermans writes a book for his grandnephew that explains the evolution of St. Nicholas into Santa Claus.
Nicholas quickly made a name for himself with his eloquence, intelligence and generosity. Recognized as a miracle worker during his lifetime, he became known for helping children in need, mothers in labor, and sailors as they traversed the Mediterranean. The modern incarnation of Santa Claus, however, became popularized in the mid-19th century through a poem by Clement Clark Moore called "A Visit from St. Nicholas"-better known as "The Night Before Christmas"-in the Frank Church editorial, "Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus," and in the artwork of Thomas Nast and Haddon Sundblom.
This book will appeal to children from the age of nine to ninety-nine. Anyone who celebrates Christmas-regardless of whether or not they still believe in the existence of a Santa Claus who brings gifts to children around the world-will welcome this informative and eloquent explanation of the true story behind how a humble bishop from Asia became "jolly old St. Nick."
Customer Reviews:
Forget the Grinch.......2004-10-11
Written for a three-year-old grandnephew to read when he is 13 o4 14, this large format paperback is clearly more than the story of the morphing of St. Nicholas into Santa Claus. Yes, that's the theme, and it is told well, but the author necessarily includes a great deal of cultural and church history. Black and white drawings and color reproductions of medieval art are commingled with replicas of soft drink ads featuring Santa. The writing reminds me of maybe a 12th grade religion text, which I wouldn't have appreciated so much in high school. Or it might be similar to something from a Lives of the Saints, though none of those held my interest like The Wonderworker. Put this one on your bookshelf next to Night before Christmas and begin a new tradition.

This Little Light of Mine
ASIN: 0970673213 |
Product Description
Why does Santa come to our house on Jesus' birthday? This question from Claire Bateman's young son became the inspiration for "How Christmas Began". We all know the miraculous story of Jesus' birth and we also know about St. Nicholas, the patron saint of Christmas, and his generous trips around the world delivering gifts. But how do these stories connect? Bateman, certain she is not the first parent forced to explain the relationship between reindeer and redeemer, is equally certain she is not the first adult searching for the real meaning of Christmas. By combining these two beloved traditions her book establishes a refreshing explanation for the Christmas we know today. This sweet tale depicts Jesus and Santa as boyhood friends who are looking for all the people who live with the light of Jesus inside of them. When Santa shows Jesus how many people live with His "special glow" in their hearts, the stage is set. Read how the two boys develop plans for the biggest birthday party in the world and discover how Christmas really began.

Winter can be a cold, lonely and dangerous time for a bird that didn't fly south. But in The Bird in Santa's Beard, help comes from Santa Claus himself. Santa invites the cold and hungry bird to nest in the warm safety of his beard. During the long winter Santa and the bird develop a deep friendship. They solve problems and share the secret of Santa's helpers. And when Christmas morning arrives, Santa receives a grand gift just for him.
The Bird in Santa's Beard is the story of an unlikely friendship between Santa and a bird and how a simple kindness makes a difference.
I so enjoyed learning how Santa came to have all of his helpers. Children will enjoy this book with a subtle and important message. The photographs are wonderful and a nice change of pace from other illustrated books. The cover is exactly the way I have always pictured jolly old Santa.
Armchair Interviews says: This is a splendid addition to a child's Christmas library.

Are You Grumpy, Santa?

Author-illustrator team Stephen Krensky and S.D. Schindler are once again intent on demystifying the big guy in red. They seem to be having a good time doing it, and it's pretty hard not to get caught up in the fun.
Just as they did in How Santa Got His Job, a tongue-in-cheek account of Santa's circuitous entrée into the Christmas biz, Krensky and Schindler go behind the scenes to tell another true story from the life of Mr. Claus. This time, the trouble starts in the North Pole employee break room, as some of the elves are grumbling over coffee and donuts about Santa's annual procrastination and last-minute rush: "Why can't Santa plan better?" "How come he's so slow?" One bespectacled elf named Muckle goes further: "Santa is too set in his ways.... He wastes time and energy." Sure, but what can you do? Santa's "only human." And that gives Muckle his big idea.
In a few months, the Deliverator is unveiled, an automated, UFO-style, present-delivery solution that might just put Santa out of a job. Well, there's actually no "might" about it--remember the book's title--but Santa doesn't go down without a head-to-head, John Henry-style competition. You can imagine how this goes: both manage to whiz down the chimney in a second flat, but only Santa stops for milk and cookies--"Chocolate chip... my favorite."
So the only question remaining is whether and when Santa gets his groove back. And between Krensky's carefully staged story and Schindler's playful, often subtle illustrations (schematics of the Deliverator, a frazzled Muckle on his laptop), you can bet you'll have a good time finding out. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Santa has the best job he can think of -- bringing presents each Christmas to children all around the world. Every year he prepares for his trip: He trims his beard, takes a bath, gets dressed, and packs up his sleigh for the long night ahead. But there are always a few unexpected delays that make things a little hectic. Muckle, one of the elves who helps Santa, thinks he can come up with a more efficient way for delivering the toys -- a method that won't involve Santa at all.
Stephen Krensky's understated text and S. D. Schindler's charming illustrations come together to create a warm and funny tale that reminds us just how important the human touch really is.

This is a great book for anyone who loves the holiday, Christmas.
I would recommend it to Kindergarten to second grade. It is a short
book, and is very interesting. It is about a person whose name is Muckle. He shows an invention he made, a rocket ship called the deliverer to Santa's helpers. The elves and Muckle decide to do tests to see who is the fastest, the deliverer or Santa. There were three tests; the first test was who could get dressed the fastest. The second test was who could mach the most children to a toy in an hour. The final test was who can put the presents under the tree the fastest. To find out who won these tests and who will deliver the toys to the children read this four star book.
Could Santa Be Replaced?.......2001-11-20
Santa had his own way of doing things. Every year before the big ride he checked the weather, looked over his maps, took a nice bubble bath, trimmed his beard, polished his boots, got the reindeer fed and ready, and packed his sled. It was always hectic, and there was always a last minute rush. Some of the elves complained, wishing Santa would plan better, and not waste so much time. But what could they do? Santa was only human. Then one little elf, Muckle, had an idea. He worked on his secret project for months, and in late fall unveiled the "Deliverator". Muckle claimed it could travel around the world and deliver presents faster and better. Could this be the end of Santa? Could he really be replaced?..... Stephen Krensky has written a charming and amusing story, with a gentle message, that will put a smile on the faces of young and old, alike. His simple and clever text is beautifully complemented by S.D. Schindler's expressive and detailed artwork, and together they've authored a delightfully warm story that helps kids understand that faster isn't always better. Sometimes it's the personal touch that makes something special. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, How Santa Lost His Job is a wonderful addition to this year's Christmas picture books, and a terrific story to help usher in the holiday season.
