Book Description
Holy Mother! She gets around, that gal, and now her myriad miraculous appearances are captured on film and in living black-and-white (as opposed to in marble, glow-in-the-dark dashboard plastic, or tasteful acrylic paint on black velvet).
Look! There she goes again: dancing on stage at a Madonna concert in Vegas. Wait! Isn’t that her riding hogs with the Angels (Hell’s Angels, that is)? And sure, sure, we all know she’s been seen in many a tortilla, but have you ever encountered Our Lady of Masa Harina? Who’s that white water rafting? Giving Air Jordan a high-five? Yep, that’s our Mary, not exactly the unathletic, retiring type she’s made out to be in Renaissance art.
But you have to look closely at these photos, courtesy of the Institute of Seriously Weird Virgin Mary Sightings (ISWVMS), for Mary’s appearances are, like those of Elvis, unannounced, inexplicable and, well, seriously weird.
Wait, don’t bite into that cinnamon Danish…look closer! It’s not just a swirl of filling, it’s…it’s…her!

Customer Reviews:
The most encouraging book ever.......2007-07-08
I bought this book from the author two years ago at a homeschooling conference. I have re-read it hundreds of times...I almost know it by heart. The book describes the life of a Catholic Home-Schooling mom and it is full of the author's wonderful sense of humor. She makes us think and see the beauty of life. I would recommend that everybody buys this book for their daughters, mothers, friends. It is a must for any Catholic family library.
Hilarious.....and so true!!!!.......2006-06-23
This was THE BEST gift I could have ever gotten for my Mom for Mother's Day. She is a "graduate" of 21 years of homeschooling us. Even though she had only three girls spread far apart in age, she was practically rolling on the floor in helpless laughter as she saw how well it related to her friends who had much larger families. I sorta "borrowed" it to look at after I realized I let it slip through my fingers to her without getting a chance to read it....and now, with two toddlers and an infant and the prospect of homeschooling them (and undoubtedly some more!) I decided I had to buy this book for me now!!! I am waiting for a sequel!!! Susie Lloyd, you are the greatest!! Keep 'em coming! :-)
Great.......2006-06-17
Rings so true for Catholics and for homeschoolers. I laughed my way through the book as I recognized so many of the same things in my own family. I highly recommend it.
Ah, I've been there...!.......2006-06-17
Even though I don't have five girls like the author of this book, I can relate to so much of what she describes. I really enjoyed the chapter on Home Improvement, where she bemoans having a husband who is great at Catholic apologetics but takes forever to get around to refinishing the kitchen cabinets, coming up with delay after delay .... "Finally, I produce a contract signed in blood..." Ha! The other stories, about her addiction to rock n'roll and her daydreaming about changing her supervan for a sports car were honest moments I think every other Gen X homeschooling mom could relate to. I truly enjoyed this book, and hope there's more coming from Susie Lloyd!
Excellent Insight.......2006-03-07
Mrs. Lloyd offers a clever, witty, and humorous description of the challenges and blessings that make up the life of a homeschooling family. She provides excellent insight into how to create a holy Catholic environment within one's own family. Her motherly wisdom is valuable information for all (not just parents who homeschool their children). Reading this book brings you face to face with a family dedicated to holiness. We need more mothers who are willing to share the joys of their vocation. Thank you Mrs. Lloyd!
Book Description
Effectively disproving any notion that Christians are relentlessly dour, melancholy, humorless, and joyless, these books from Cal and Rose Samra offer a rib-tickling treasury of Christian joy and humor. They're as ideally suited to individuals and families looking for a laugh as they are to pastors, speakers, and all those who seek to spice up their presentations - and their lives -
with a few power-packed moments of Holy Humor.
For more than a decade, the interdenominational Fellowship of Merry Christians has been publishing The Joyful Noiseletter, an award-winning newsletter filled with church life humor by some of the world's top comedians, humorists, clowns, and cartoonists. Now, the most snicker-spurring and laughter-inciting of these comical contributions are available in four uproarious trade paperback collections and four mini-giftbooks!
Featuring cartoons by such gifted cartoonists as Bil Keane, creator of The Family Circus, and Johnny Hart, creator of B.C., these collections by editors Cal and Rose Samra are a virtual treasury of good, clean, inspirational humor. Within the pages of each book, readers will find enough knee-slapping jokes, uplifting anecdotes, zingy one-liners, joyful Scripture references, inspiring stories, top ten lists, clean limericks, church cartoons, real-life "uh-ohs," bulletin bloopers, and "jestimonials" from pastors, health professionals, chaplains, and patients to make them laugh from start to finish!

Good pulpit jokes.......2007-04-05
The jokes and anecdotes are appropriate for sermon uses or just to get fellow Christians to smile and laugh. I do find this and other works of the same series a bit self-congratulatory. I would rather have more humor and fewer "You've done a great job" testimonials. However, I am aware that the material I'm criticizing helps counteract the sad notion that people aren't allowed to laugh in church.

More Hilarity Please.......2000-09-26
While this book was amusing, I have seen many of the items before, and I kept waiting for the various authors to break some real ground here, but they played it safe too often.
Holy Hilarity.......1999-12-23
I love to read amusing anecdotes, etc. and I enjoyed this book. As the "holy" in the title suggests, this book's about God and church...and the amusing stuff about holy things. It is non-denominational.

Crying as I write.......2003-12-28
Okay, so I haven't read it yet. And I emphasize yet. I only just looked at the sample pages and the index and already my dad is coming to see why I've fallen off of my chair. Yoko Ono (see Antichrist) is simply priceless. I'm buying this book if it kills me.
For die-hard RSC fans only.......2002-09-25
As both an amateur actor and somebody who just appreciates a good laugh, I'm a big fan of just about everything the Reduced Shakespeare Company has done... however, reading this book by two of the RSC members was something of a let-down.
Reed and Austin, if I may call them that, presume a bit too much familiarity as they write. I got the jokes and the tone they intended, but I also got the impression that anyone who wasn't already familiar with their work would have been left pretty cold. "Who are these guys? Where do they get off?" is a response I imagine them getting.
Also, while the alternating-chapter device is cute, each of them employs a running gag (in Reed's case, the story of tormenting a poor Pastor, in Austin's, struggles with his own Atheism) that really meander and get stale for about half of the book before you realize that, rather than gags, these are actually attempts at a plot. I really would have preferred they'd gotten rid of these segments and just concentrate on what does work -- the satire.
And when they concentrate on what they're good at, it's great. Reed's chapter on the story of Moses, which he mixes up with the film career of Charlton Heston, is one of the funniest things I've read in a long time.
But the good stuff is too few and far-between for the casual reader. If you're a die-hard fan of the Reduced Shakespeare Company, it's worth it. Otherwise, you'd be better off reading some of their other stuff first.
A Tasty, Pop Culture, Bible Smoothie!.......2001-06-07
I think it's safe to say that there probably aren't any other books out there that put stories from The Bible into a blender with references to Oprah, Harry Potter, Pink Floyd, and K-Tel Records and hit "puree"! At least not with such delicious results.
The authors are members of the renowned Reduced Shakespeare Company - and their irreverant and witty spirit is intact in this book. Who else but these two brilliant, misguided fools would tell the "Story of Moses' and include bits of Planet of the Apes and Indiana Jones? Funny is funny and they're funny. The book gives the reader an accessible look at the stories of the Bible (as well as the mental and physical breakdowns of both authors during the writing of the book!).
I particularly enjoyed the little details -- even the Foreword and Bibliography is funny. DO NOT miss reading the Index (which is my personal favorite part of the book). The section on the parallels between The Bible and Hollywood are a direct hit. I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to have their funny bone tickled. I would also check out their other books of the plays they've performed -- they're really great too.

Holy Humor, Indeed....I laughed from the depths of my soul!.......2003-06-07
I am a cradle Catholic (have been since I was an infant) and I stood up, to applaud this book, then knelt down to thank God for the gift of laughter. Then, in true catholic form, I sat down and read it for a while, then stood up, knelt down, stood up again, and clapped my hands with delight and joy at the humor found within these pages. I recommend it to anyone - faith believers or not. This book has something for everyone!
i laughed until i cried.......2003-01-24
one day in class i was reading along in this book and got to one of my favorite pages of all time--the spoonerisms. i got sent out in the hall (in trouble) for causing a disruption in class--by my favorite teacher!!! it was hilarious!
A lighthearted look at church affairs... really fun!.......1999-05-26
This was a lot of fun to read--the kind of book which lifts your spirits and leaves you smiling.
Book Description
Holy Tango of Literature is a unique and captivating collection mimicking the great writers of literary history. This devilishly witty book has a twist: Each writer's name is rearranged as a title, creating the subject for a parody rendered in the author's style.
Customer Reviews:
An utter delight!.......2006-02-24
It takes a certain amount of talent to write a good pastiche, particularly, I think, of poetry. And it takes a certain degree of twisted brilliance to come up with the idea of writing parodies based on anagrams of the author's names. But it takes nothing more than genius to capture each author's style absolutely dead on, weave in a host of clever pop culture references, and produce something that pleases the frontal lobes of the brain even as it mounts an all-out tickle war on the funnybone. This book is a work of absolute freakin' genius.
I should note, by the way, that you really don't have to be a lit geek to enjoy this. I hardly consider myself a poetry connoisseur, but I recognized the great majority of the pieces being parodied. Heaney seems to have stuck to the author's most famous works, many of which are familiar from high school English classes. And even the ones whose source I didn't recognize entertained me. Which, when you think about it, is all the more impressive.
Don't let this one get away.......2006-01-18
A lovely little book that has proven to be a wonderful introduction to classical poetry in our homeschooling family.
Great stuff!.......2005-10-16
Francis Heany hits the nail on the head with each of these brilliantly conceived bits. He has a chameleon-like flair for clicking into the rhythm, style and voice of each writer. It's just uncanny. Also, the stories he explores based on the anagramed writers' names are a riot.
We had relatives visiting, and my husband's niece was in tears from laughing so hard at Robert Frost/"BrR, Footrest". Who else would come up with a surreal combination of "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" and the opening credits of "The Dick van Dyke Show"? Absolutely brilliant stuff.
Looking for a great gift for your friends who love a good juxtaposition of classic literature and popular culture? "Holy Tango" of Literature should be on your shopping list!
All The Literature You'll Ever Need.......2005-06-06
This is wonderful stuff by a true comic polymath. Just read "Likable Wilma" by William Blake, which begins, "Wilma, Wilma, in thy blouse, Red-haired prehistoric spouse" , and you'll know what I mean. I have a conflict of interest here (I drew the pictures) but I laughed hard at Francis Heaney's work before I got tangled up with it, when I first saw it in Mirth of a Nation. Buy The Holy Tango today! The children of America should be committing it to memory!
A work of unique brilliance and multi-layered wit.......2005-04-30
This expertly-crafted and flawlessly erudite effort would be well worth one's attention as a jaw-droppingly-impressive literary stunt, even if it weren't that funny. The fact that it is, on top of everything else, hilarious makes it absolutely irresistible.

More Holy, Less Hilarity.......2000-09-26
You can read my review of the first book in the series and apply it here. More of the same oft-told stories without trying anything new. I will stick to the Church Chuckles series instead.

Only the most devoted Python Fans need apply........2000-04-21
I picked up my copy (rarer U.K. release) 20 years ago when it was in regular publication. It is masterfully assembled and includes many production notes in addition to the complete script. If you can find a copy, you must get it.
A Comic Classic, With Special Insights.......2000-01-20
There's no justice in a world where this book has gone out of print. It's been rereleased at least once, but appears to be out of print as of January, 2000. This is a must-have for serious Python fans or fans of film comedy.
The book not only contains the screenplay for the film, complete with a nearly perfect (that is, nearly agreeing with the film) text, as well as the very different first draft of the text. Included are complete scenes that were cut (as in King Brian's court). There are great illustrations by Terry Gilliam as well as still photos from the set, both on camera and off.
Dig around, it's worth it!
This book is a classic. Especially for Monty Python fans.......1997-04-05
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a old tale supposedly taking place in the days of King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable. After God Himself appears to Arthur(played by Graham Chapman in the movie), and his knights, they are sent on an all-out hilarious quest for the Holy Grail(the cup Jesus drank from at the last supper) In their travels, they encouter a Three-Headed knight, Sir Lancelot's dangerous idiom, a castle full of virgins, a killer rabbit, an old man(from scene 24), and Oh the horrors! Oh the humanity! the dreaded Knights who say "Nee!"(Those who encouter them rarely live to tell the tale). This is a great and funny book for all age groups. It contains alot of British humor, but anyone will enjoy it. So, I suggest not waiting, but order this great book A.S.A.P!!!
