Book Description
Most books on backache emphasize medication or surgery as cures. This practical guide suggests a better approach for sufferers. Using self-healing techniques to relieve pain, distinguishing back trouble from other problems, and protecting a weak back during sex or pregnancy are just a few of the topics in this thorough handbook. Over 40 black-and-white illustrations are included.

Almost useless.......2007-06-25
I did not like this book. It gives only very basic information on how the spine works; the exercises are not properly described and exercise drawbacks are not pointed out. There is a section about nutrition that does not tell you anything really useful.
You might consider buying it only if you are a real novice to this matter.
Excellent!.......2007-05-25
This a wonderful book, and is very reliable in its accuracy. This book can save you some major headaches (no pun intended) down the road. Read it!
gives me aches to read this.......2006-12-17
beisdes some exercises and self help sections i found this book to be very dry and thought i was in school to be a Dr, not your average self help book. THis book was too much, and yet somehow not enough
Excellent Book........2004-08-18
This is an excellent book to help you fix your back injury if you have been in an auto accident like me. Full of useful tips, and general good advice. It's one of these self-help books that will help you tremendously dealing with the pain and suffering experienced after a personal injury. I am fond of self-help books, self-help websites and other self-help resources too, and this book is on the top of my list (others like this website http://www.settlementcentral.com) have helped me a lot on the legal side of my personal injury claim too. They even talked about chiropractic care as well as providing demand letters and other stuff useful if you have been in a car accident. This said, this is a book definitively recommended!
Sound advice, especially when you are hurting!.......2003-09-01
Last year I had a back injury that left me immobile for two months. During that time I read four back books to "empower" me with knowledge and tips for recovery. Dr. Homola's book (now with post-it-notes stuck in numerous chapters) was the most helpful. From helping to determine causes of pain, to outlining simple excercises you can do without buying expensive equipment, this book was the only one I really needed to read. It's a book I'll keep on hand as a helpful resource for years to come.
Book Description

stiff necks
sore shoulders
back discomfort
and much more
Customer Reviews:
Simple, succinct and right on.......2004-07-17
Mr. Miller has captured the essence of using yoga postures and other techniques to ameliorate the bane of man's existence: those nagging, chronic pain sensations that seem to get us all at one point or another. I happen to be an occuptional medicine medical doctor and have seen tens of thousands of people for those very common aches and pains of which Mr. Miller writes. His advice is right on the money which is exactly what you'll save by using this book instead of buying potentially harmful drugs or paying for doctor appointment after doctor appointment. Of course, there is a role for medical attention. But there is also a heavily under-utilized role for self administered tender loving care in the form of these gentle therapuetic yoga postures and breath work. So free yourself self from the pain body and waiting rooms and get this book and (here is the most important aspect) APPLY it.
Simply brilliant.......2004-07-12
For those interested in simply finding relief from pain or discomfort Fred Miller has distilled the ancient practice of Yoga to bring it's benefits to the practical Western mind. Though it's written in a prescriptive format, all the exercises or postures are sequenced in such a way as to bring a deep overall sense of well-being. It's accessible, easy to understand and use. After all, as the author says, the best exercise is the one you do. I found relief from a nagging lower back discomfort through his simple formula that showed me that I was just plain doing the wrong things like stretching where it hurt. It's obvious that the author knows what he's talking about but he doesn't try to impress you with his knowledge, rather in the spirit of true wisdom he shares with humor and clarity. BUY it, even if you don't hurt!

Book Description
In The Other Midlife Crisis Dr. Wilson explains with clarity and humor where arthritis and all those aches and pains come from, what treatment strategies actually work and what doesn't work. With plain language and his own illustrations he unravels for his fellow baby boomers, everything from carpal tunnel syndrome to backache to knee arthritis.
Customer Reviews:
Superb Primer on How to Avoid and Deal with Arthritis.......2004-01-20
Dr. Michael R. Wilson has written a superb book here that will inform anyone who takes time to read this easy-to-follow, thorough look at our bones, joints, ligaments and tendons . . . plus all those pesky pains associated with them. The information will help you avoid having problems, reduce the amount of problems you will experience and minimize the pain and lost time you will have to suffer.
I was attracted to this book because many members of my family have arthritis or bone-related medical problems. A good friend is an orthopedic surgeon, so I had received from him good advice a long time ago: Avoid exercise that damages joints (like jogging). Beyond that, I knew very little.
As I began the book, I was a little concerned when chapter two contained many pages of medical terminology to be learned before reading the rest of the book. That chapter was the only hard and not very rewarding reading. The rest I enjoyed very much, and found easy to follow. I particularly liked the cartoons, drawings and x-rays of the various conditions and syndromes. I could often grasp with the image what a whole chapter would have had trouble conveying.
Although the book is aimed at those who are middle aged (currently, the baby boomers), there's also lots of information for younger people and the elderly. So you get the whole enchilada. That makes the book helpful in working with parents and children, as well as with one's spouse, siblings and oneself.
I particularly benefited from learning the differences between osteoarthritis (the joints wearing out) and rheumatoid arthritis (infected joints). I had questions about shoulder problems (including those I hear about on television for athletes), tennis elbow, bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, bifocal neck, sciatica, knee problems, heel pain, osteoporosis and gout. All of my questions were answered in more than adequate detail, and I learned important information that I didn't realize that I needed to learn.
Unexpectedly, I came away with a better understanding of how each of my joints works, how to react in an accident, and what to talk to my physicians about if I have a bone or joint problem. Although Dr. Wilson is an orthopedic surgeon, he is candid about the situations when surgery will probably make matters worse.
As I finished the book, I was thankful to the gym teacher who many years ago taught me how to fall so that I would not hurt myself.
Ably written for the non-specialist general reader.......2004-01-17
Ably written for the non-specialist general reader by Michael R. Wilson (a professional Orthopedic surgeon of 25 years experience), The Other Midlife Crisis: Arthritis And All Those Aches And Pains offers solid information spiced with a touch of humor concerning the health problem of arthritis and how to best deal with it. Excellent recommendations for exercise, improved diet, health concerns and personal care fill the pages of this superbly organized and presented instructional for coping with the problems of arthritis and reducing join pain.
The Other Midlife Crisis:Arthritis and Those Aches and Pains.......2003-12-01
"It seems that when I go to a doctor any more, I feel rushed and can't ask all my questions. The doctot seems distraught with HMOs, insurance, Medicare and so many other patients that I feel guilty taking his time to ask one more thing. When I sat down and read Dr. Wilson's book, it was just like sitting down with a doctor I could talk to, who related to my shoulder problems and tied it in with how it limited what I can do. I found his explanations for common problems forthright. My better understanding will help me prepare what to ask the next time I have to go to the doctor."
Connection to the workplace.......2003-11-25
Our co. had an epidemic of carpal tunnel syndrome. People would take days off and our worker'c comp. claims increased. I, as a manager, didn't understand what cps was, how our workplace could cause it and which employee complaints had merit. The illustration and text on cps are so clear that I saw which work stations were a problem and learned what I could efficiently due to eliminate some of the risk and avoid loss of productivity
Don't look back.......2003-11-19
"When my doctor told me I had arthritis of the hands and knees, I panicked and thought the worst. My mother is wheelchair bound with arthritis. But I learned there are a lot of things I can do to help myself stay in good condition, keep muscle around the joints balanced; and that I can live a normal life with arthritis. I have never had this condition explained to me so plainly."

Customer Reviews:
Extremely disappointing.......2002-10-20
At their best, Maeve's books contain wonderful warmth and humour. This one, sadly, falls far short of that promise.
For example, various sections (such as the one on how uncomfortabless with being undressed means self-obsession), rather than being witty or understanding of a patient's pain and fear, seem instructions on how to be a "good patient," to cause doctors or nurses maximum convenience. Many of those who are ill have found that doctors are not the nicest of people with whom to deal, and there is nothing to make a patient feel comfort or empathy in this book. The little "poem" about telling about eating, smoking, and drinking is far from funny.
I would not dream of giving this to anyone who was ill. The copy I'd intended to present ended up in my recycling bin.
Laughter is still indeed the best medicine!.......2000-10-07
Having had hip replacement surgery myself recently, this book was sent to me by a friend, both of us familiar with Maeve Binchy's books. I can't begin to tell you how each page brought tears to my eyes from laughter as I related to her stories of elastic stockings, "invalid" gadgets from walkers to commodes, the unfailing compassion of overworked nurses, and the embarassment of those wonderful hospital gowns! Wendy Shea's illustrations were hysterical reminders of hospitals and then the long awaited recovery period. You both deserve 10 Stars!
Does laughter cause aches and pains?.......2000-07-08
Many years ago, the writer Norman Cousins, wrote a now classic book about the part laughter and humor played in his recovery from a life threatening illness. And today, its as if Maeve Binchy continued this premise when she wrote her newest book, Aches and Pains.
Maeve Binchy is primarily known as the best selling Irish author who writes wonderful tales filled with memorable characters. Some also know her from her meaningful columns which appear in the Irish Times. But now readers everywhere will be introduced to a very different Maeve Binchy as learn about Binchy as a patient when she first had surgery to replace her hip and then during her recuperation. And readers will have an extra bonus from the illustrations done by Wendy Shaw who had the same operation as Ms. Binchy. The book is really funny, filled with all sorts of advice on how to survive a stay in any hospital and some anecdotal dopctor and nurse stories. And strange as it may seem, Binchy and Shaw make it a pleasure to read about their confinements.
Consider reading this book to see how it is possible to make light of your aches and pains or think about giving this as a gift to somebody who is also recuperating.
And an extra benefit is that all of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be contributed to the Arthritis Foundation.
A great book to give to someone who's ailing.......2000-06-18
An easy to read, entertainig, compilation of short vinettes and advice from one of my favorite writers. Some of the chapters originally appeared in Maeve's column in the Irish Times, which she used to chronicle her recent hip replacement. It is filled with humorous and matter of fact ways to deal with illness head on. Not a novel or short story....so regular readers may be a bit disappointed, but a delightful tidbit for to share with someone who is sick, or to read yourself.
Warm Cheering-Up Medicine for Those with Routine Illnesses.......2000-06-16
Most of us make lousy patients. I'm told that physicians are the worst. We think the worst. We miss what we can't do. We take it out on everyone around us. In short, we need to lighten up.
Maeve Binchy and Wendy Shaw ended up having hip replacement surgery around the same time, and compared notes. They realized the patients needed something to cheer them up. This little, light-hearted, warm book is just the ticket! I think it is the best book gift I have seen for those going through normal illnesses.
I wouldn't recommend it for people with serious, life-threatening situations. An inspiring book about miracle recoveries would work better there. Lance Armstrong's new book, It's Not About the Bike, fits the bill for many cancer patients, for example.
Here's what's in this book. It begins with an explanation about Ms. Binchy's hip replacement that includes having to face up to the need to lose weight, stop smoking, and cut way back on the alcohol. In a witty fashion, she makes great good fun out of her own fears and foibles. You can't help but like her for it, and begin to laugh at yourself a little in your own past experiences with doctors, nurses and hospitals.
From there, she goes on to provide witty lists that would cheer anyone up. One of my favorites was full of put-downs (that everyone has thought, but never said) to one's roommate in the hospital. No, you won't say these either, but you'll probably break up laughing as you think about this list every time you look at the other patient.
There are lists for what gifts to ask for, things to do when you get home, what tasks to give visitors, and every other imaginable circumstance.
The book is enjoyable both for its humor, and its good humor -- showing you how to look on the bright side. One of my favorite sections was the story about the woman who thought she was having a heart attack, and ended up getting a lecture from a third year medical student (serving as a waitress) about all of the other things it could be that are not so serious.
Smile! You'll feel better when you do!

A must-own book for your home library!.......2005-06-13
Thomas' book IS a Complete Book of Natural Pain Relief! It's well-organized, includes gorgeous color photographs and helpful charts and most importantly, is succinctly written. It has TWO MAIN SECTIONS, "THE AILMENTS" and "THE THERAPIES".
"THE AILMENTS" includes fourteen sections in a very helpful 'At A Glance' chart of them all listing the site/type of pain, the ailment, and page number for quick reference; and each ailment is discussed in appropriate detail. Some ailments have only a paragraph while other more serious ailments like Depression, have longer sections including remedies of: visualization, meditation, self-hypnosis, biofeedback, flower remedies, exercise, massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, creative arts, homeopathy, healing, nutritional and dietary therapy, herbal medicine, movement therapies, light and color therapies, and hydrotherapy.
"THE THERAPIES" includes PHYSICAL THERAPIES: Naturopathy, Nutritional therapy, Electronic devices, Herbal medicine, Massage and Aromatherapy; MOVEMENT THERAPIES: Yoga, Tai Chi and Alexander Technique; PSYCHOLOGICAL THERAPIES: Self-hypnosis, Relaxation and Creative arts therapies; SUBTLE ENERGY THERAPIES: Acupressure, Reflexology, Homeopathy, Healing (including a favorite of mine, Reiki,) and Flower remedies; and lastly, OTHER EFFECTIVE THERAPIES: Acupuncture, Manipulation, Hypnotherapy and Counseling and psychotherapy.
Thomas used a consultant, Peter Albright, M.D. in the writing of this book and Thomas' book is very encouraging for one to realize that WE can have a direct role in OUR health and healing and come to understand we don't have to "pop a pill" for every little ache. In my personal experience, I've learned superior nutrition, regular exercise (including a good balance and variety), maintaining an optimistic outlook and keeping in balance my mind, body and spirit help me get healthier day by day! You can do the same. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Soar!
