This is a great bathroom reader with tons of weird, unfamiliar facts and information. You can read one page or more at a time and never have to review what you have already read to "catch up." A fun book with the best of Readers Digest, Ripley's Believe It or Not, and the Farmer's Almanac. Highly recommended.

As a long time fan of Uncle John and the BRI, I am sorry to say that I was disappointed by this one. The writing is not as good as the other books in the BRI library, nor is the information. I would unhesitatingly recommend the other volumes by Uncle John to anyone...but, sorry, not this one. it seems that BRI is running out of fodder.

I was gifted this volume of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader series by my fiancee's father, this last Christmas. I didn't know what to think, at first. It seemed kind of... an odd gift.

But, what the heck, I figured: I put it on top of the toilet tank in good faith, and made plans to start reading it "when the time was right."

This is an excellent book.

I'd never had a book specifically designed to be a bathroom reader, before (though I've used other books for the purpose, such as Finnegans Wake); this is a collection of trivia and interesting, obscure anecdotes, reflecting a lot of research. The stories are fascinating, and the format (they're broken up into chunks, scattered throughout the work) is appropriate for the task at hand. Reading it was a pleasure everytime I had to sit down to work. :)

I doubt that I will wait till next Christmas, to see whether I have another volume waiting for me. This was my first in this genre, and in this series, but it certainly will not be my last.

What can you say about the 'Uncle John' books, now in its 19th incarnation, that hasn't already been said? Trivia freaks will think they've died and gone to heaven with this latest compilation of weird subjects, obscure facts and famous, infamous and oddball characters delivered up in the usual inimitable Uncle John style.

Version 19's 519 pages covers everything from food origins to toilet tech (naturally!), weird sports feats to forgotten history, dumb crooks to fads and flops, yada, yada, yada.

Whatever your interests, pick up this book. Interesting facts, fun reading - there's something for everyone in these volumes!

4 out of 5 stars A Different Sort of Travel Guide: Fascinating Park Trivia.......2007-05-19

This latest Uncle John publication proclaims on its back cover "It's time to hit the Trail!" Hit the history books is more like it. This wonderful little volume is full of fascinating trivia about the national parks and monuments found in the US and Canada. Each chapter is brief enough to be read during a single trip to the throne room of your house, and for the most part the prose is enjoyable enough to keep you coming back. Favorite stories for me were "The Great Pig War" in which the US and England nearly managed to go to war over a dead pig (San Juan Island National Historic Park) and the Mojave National Preserve's "lonely phonebooth."

For the most part the history and folklore seemed accurate enough, though the authors did slip a little when they wrote that Ansel Adams had saved King's Canyon with pictures of its Giant Sequoia Grove. There is no such grove in King's Canyon proper. General Grant Grove is now administered as a part of King's Canyon National Park, but it has been protected since 1890. In any event, King's Canyon was preserved because it so closely resembled Yosemite. On the other hand, virtually every other element of the book is accurate. Indeed, this is one of the few sources I have ever read that correctly notes Hot Springs Arkansas is the oldest National Park, dating back to 1835, long before the Yosemite Grant or the creation of Yellowstone National Park.

So, by all means get this rather unusual travel guide. It probably won't help much with actual trip planning, but it is nice for whiling away the time between trips: especially that portion of the time when you are otherwise preoccupied.

Interesting tid bits about National Parks. Suggest you read this before visiting the parks. You might decide to change your routings, in some cases.

Well, okay the book is huge but the articles are only 3 to 4 pages long. The things are really humorous and inquisitive. For example, on page 530 it says that the country of Brazil was named after the Brazil nut. Some of the articles titles are Brand Names, Who Cracked The Liberty Bell?, Diner Lingo, and
Dumb Crooks. If youre looking for a good book I would definitely recommend this book. Also, if you are loking for books to fill your shelf, the bathroom reader series should be on your shopping list.- FeatherBall

If you aren't very smart, don't know how to start a conversation, or better yet take a long time in the bathroom you need this book. It is filled with facts that you want to know not facts that you could care less about (not completely true since there are some stupid stuff but you aren't forced to read it). Did you know that more people have seen David Copperfield perform live than any other performer in the world. Or did you know that blue birds cannot see the color blue. Give this book a try. I love this book because knowing random stuff is always good to know.

I love this book. Right when I got it in the mail I started to read it right away. I actually read this book more at night than in the bathroom. The history series in the Uncle John's bathroom readers are really interesting articles because they tell you information that you always wanted to know.

At this point I think I have all of their books...great for trivia buffs; folks who want to read for a bit, put it down, and read later without following a storyline/plot; history fans, etc.

I'm not, by nature, overly impressed with trivia books. I enjoy them at times, but I rarely consider them "page-turners", which is why they are often considered great choices for bathroom reading material. This collection is a welcome exception! History is a fascinating field, something more people need to realize but few can grasp after years of stale high school history lessons. This book has a lot of fascinating material in it, and offers the reader a wealth of hilarious and/or startling trivia. This book is well worth the cost!

I received the first Uncle John's Bathroom Reader as a gift nearly fifteen years ago, and I have enjoyed every one of its many successors. "Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Plunges Into History" is the first of the readers to focus on a specific subject matter, but it is every bit as enjoyable as its more generic brethren.

Whether you read this book in the bathroom or in the living room, you'll really get a kick out of it. Each article is short, interesting and can generally be read in one sitting (so to speak). Although some of the material was new to me, the book seemed to have its facts straight about the stories with which I was familiar. Despite the witty and breezy style, the authors have usually done enough homework to master the basics. To top it off, the "factoids" on the bottom of each page are pretty interesting in their own right!

If you enjoy history lite--featuring short articles that can be read quickly in a series of short sittings--check out "The Bathroom Historian," my ongoing list of books in this genre. Happy reading!

I've enjoyed the other Uncle John's Bathroom Readers and this one made a wonderful gift for my cat-loving mother! I've enjoyed browsing through it in her, um, facilities, and I find the stories fascinating. Great literature it isn't, but it is perfect for those who love cats and only have a few minutes at a time to read!

I am the author of Tabitha the Fabulous Flying Feline. The authors make reference to me and my cat in their book however no one ever contacted me or my publisher to get the true story. Since the section about me is inaccurate, it only makes me wonder what else was cut and pasted or received second-hand from other hacks who don't check their facts.

When I opened the package I was surprised that this book was so big. I was expecting something a lot smaller. Then when I started reading I was surprised that it held my attention as long as it did. Some of the items take up a page or two, and some only take up a paragraph or two. They say my mind jumps around a lot and that is what this book does, it jumps around a lot and for me it is interesting reading and it holds my attention when few books are able to do that. At the price these books are selling for used right now you can't go wrong on this one.

This is one great book for reading the short thoughtful and sometimes very funny, and perhaps even serious stories while in the bathroom.

I usually read it a story at a time when evacuating myself (if you know what I mean... and NO, you cannot ask for pictures). The stories and text seems to be perfected timed and written to allow for the initial sit down, to push, to rest, to push, to another rest, to the five minute half time, to push, rest, the final push for any remanants, and the final TP cleaning process. Perfect length of the stories timed to your numbers two's. This rates the book five stars all by itself.

The Bathroom Readers are, as always, fun and informative. I find myself using the factoids as conversation-starters and, like one reader mentioned in a prior edition, have won radio contests because of something I learned in the books.

The reason I am writing a review on this particular edition is a page entitled Tendjewberrymud. I laughed so hard tears were squirting helplessly from my eyes; read it again and laughed harder. That single page alone was worth the entire price of the book....and I'm far from done with this one or any of the well-thumbed others that line the shelf I have devoted exclsively to Bathroom Readers.

As others have said, this is a perfect book! No more reading from old magazines, newspapers, or the label of your shampoo (just kidding). I'm so glad that my mom bought this for me, they're great. Even if you just don't want to read them in the bathroom!

I got this book for Christmas and have literally made unnecessary trips to the restroom just to read some more. It is filled with thousands of pieces of useful and not-so-useful information. For example, did you know that a penny, because of the extra weight on "heads" will come up "heads" just a little more often than "tails"? Some of Cliff Claven's best quotes from Cheers? That the first videogame was created in 1958? How about the legend of Lincoln's ghost at the Whitehouse? There are also articles on the JFK and Priness Diana conspiracies as well. The author is good at not preaching or putting in his own opinions and the info covers the entire gamut from politics, to true crime, funny stories, strange facts and everything else.
OK, time to end this review and get back to reading more of this book. Alright, one more fact, Did you know that until 1965 pennies were legal tender only up to 25cents? A creditor did not have to accepts more than 25 pennies or more than $10 in coins? Crazy huh?

After receiving this as a Christmas gift, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. People always fidget around in the bathroom to find reading material while doing their business, and the idea of a Bathroom Reader...a book specifically written for everyone (because we all gotta use the john at some point, right?)...is very novel (no pun intended)! So, there I was staring at this book, my newest Christmas present, and I was truly awaiting my next visit to the throne, just to see what the book was all about. The first chance I got in the bathroom, I opened the book, read a few pages and was instantly hooked! Believe me when I say this book has it ALL! Short stories (and interesting ones at that!), jokes, trivia, wordplay, brainteasers, and so much more! Many of the facts are useful, and some of the facts may seem meaningless, but in truth, they are quite interesting! I guarantee this book has something that pertains to everyone!

As the title of this review states, this is one of the best books I have read. So, what are the other best books I have read? Why, the other Uncle John's Bathroom Readers, of course! Buy them, you will not be disappointed! I never thought I would say this, but these Bathroom Readers make doing #2 my #1 priority!
