Book Description
It's a sad fact: 90% of all heart disease goes undetected until heart attack strikes.
An annual physical won't uncover it, you may feel great, exercise and eat intelligently, your LDL cholesterol may be 92 or 192--it makes little difference. Then how can you predict your heart's future? Do you need a crystal ball?
Well, you don't have a crystal ball. But you have the next best thing: Track Your Plaque, the program that shows you how to use the new heart scans to measure and control coronary plaque. Coronary plaque is heart disease that leads to heart attack. If you know you have hidden coronary plaque and how much, you have the power to take control of your heart health future. Quantifying the amount of plaque you have is the most powerful measure available to predict future heart attack, far better than knowing your cholesterol.
The revolutionary program that shows you how to begin to take control of your heart's future now!
Track Your Plaque is a 3-step program that shows how you can:
1) Detect and measure coronary plaque easily and inexpensively
2) Identify the causes of your coronary plaque with methods that go far beyond simple-minded cholesterol measures
3) Effectively treat the causes and gain control of your plaque
Track Your Plaque reaches farther than any other available program and can provide life-changing information to seize control of your future.

The single best resource for taking charge of your heart health.......2007-04-08
This book and its author are at the forefront of a revolution in heart health care. It contains an incredibly extensive and thorough discussion of the state of the art of preventive cardiology as of 2004, when it was written. (The author maintains a web site with even more up-to-date information as well as a blog with almost daily postings on new developments.) Most of the explanation and advice is still way ahead of the way cardiology practitioners interact with patients today in most major medical centers.
The book is written in plain English and an engaging style, and makes the technical concepts easily understood, even to people (like me) with no medical background.
The author advocates the use of non-invasive, low-radiation, widely available heart scans to determine the extent of coronary plaque. If plaque is found, he next explains the use of new cholesterol tests that analyze cholesterol in more detail than standard tests. Finally, he explains what to do to correct the abnormalities the detailed analysis may uncover.
The book will be of most interest to people who are willing to take control of their health and who may even be willing to challenge their doctors to catch up with recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease. The book is bluntly critical of the traditional cardiology strategies employed today in most hospitals and cardiology practices. As noted by another reviewer, he does advocate taking some supplements, but also tells you which supplements he thinks are worthless, based on reviews of numerous studies and his own experience treating hundreds of patients.
I found this book in my post-stent implant procedure investigation of the state of the art in heart disease treatment (I'm 50 years old). I wish I had found it and read it years earlier. I might have avoided having had the stent implanted to begin with. Thankfully, it's not too late to start applying the strategies he advocates.
If you want to see the future of preventive heart medicine today, explained in understandable, practical terms and concepts, this is the book to get.
Too many pills.......2007-03-17
While I found a lot of interesting things in this book, many of which I agree with, the "cure" is almost worse than the disease: taking a zillion vitamins and supplements every day.
I didn't try to figure it all out, but if you followed his recommendations it seems like you would have little time for anything beyond pill popping. And the cost? Yikes.
Save your own life.......2006-11-26
I have not read the book, but I know of what it speaks.
My doctor refused to think any symptoms I had could be heart disease, including light chest pain and shortness of breath that suddenly appeared during exercise. I looked too "fit and slim". Did not smoke or drink, ate healthy. Exercised regularly.
I managed to get approval for an echo stress test after 4 months. I had a swollen and infected mitral valve. 1 year on exercise rehab later, I was fine.
Two years later, I had a strained mitral valve. ANOTHER year of exercise rehab.
Then the near big one. On vacation, I had massive angina, but no heart attacks. A cooperative family doctor in NICARAGUA, of all places, immediately put me on Lopressor and gave me nitoglycerin tablets. Two more days of trouble with little improvement, and we headed to the capital, and more tests. Nothing invasive, more medication.
We had to stay another week so I could fly with some level of safety. We returned to the US and had an angiogram. 99% blocked coronary arteries, but good collateral circulation. I was scheduled for immediate bypass surgery the following day. The DOCTORS were scared for me. Some strangers came to see "The Miracle Man" (not a lot, but a few). Many medical people said it was a near miracle I was alive, let alone went on vacation, had a fairly normal life the previous 4 years, and walked in the ER to announce I had unstable angina.
My regular doctor, who thought I could have no heart disease, was flat out wrong. He nearly got me killed, when a scan 4 years earlier would have let them detect the problems and use other intervention techniques besides cutting my chest open.
Learn about scans. Have one periodically. If clear, you can wait longer before the next one.
Now go eat your fruits and vegies, cut down the meat, fats, and transfat products, watch those fatty desserts, don't stress, and enjoy a long and healthy life.
Most intelligent book on coronary heart diseas.......2006-06-17
Dr. Davis has written the most intelligent and easy to understand book on coronary artery disease that I have ever read. This book answered all the questions I had about coronary artery disease that I had been seeking for many years. Even as a nurse educator and lecturer on the topic, I had only a superficial understanding of the multiple causes and treatments. The information in the book is revolutionary, cutting edge medical treatment that most physicians aren't even aware of.
If you only read one book in the pursuit of heart health...this is the one!.......2005-08-30
Finally a cutting edge book that answers all the questions your doctor or cardiologist either didn't have the time to tell you in a short office visit, or much more likely had no idea about themselves. I had ordered about a dozen different books on heart disease from Amazon before I got to this gem. Certainly a long road to get here, but I probably wouldn't have appreciated this book as much until I read all the others!
This book ties everything together, the correct diet, supplements, exercise, prescription drugs, and explains everything so it is easy to understand and why each are important to your lipid makeup, plaque deposition potential, and the health of your endothelium (I never even knew what this was before).
In the two months I have been following the recommendations outlined by Dr. Davis I have lost over 20lbs and have much more energy and mental focus. My blood pressure has gone down (even while exercising) and I am able to exercise much longer and more intensely. Most importantly my good protective HDL cholesterol has gone up 25% in two short months!
People with active heart disease or family risk factors need to read this rather than living with the uncertainty of what their future will hold for them. Believe me when I tell you, I understand the feeling of not knowing everyday when I awoke if the "ticking time bomb" was going to go off soon. Get educated and pro-active in your heart health. This is the perfect book and starting point. I was finally frightened enough to research the topic and stick with the solution. You can too!

Book Description
Frank Sinatra is widely acclaimed as "the Voice of the Century". Though he later conquered recordings, films and television, it was radio that first made "ol'Blue Eyes" a susperstar. Radio Spirits proudly presents the classic radio shows that introduced the world to "the greatest male vocalist in the history of popular music".
Customer Reviews:
A lot more varied than you might guess.......2000-08-16
<60 Greatest Old-Time Radio Shows Starring Frank Sinatra and Friends> is a monumental memorial to a showbiz phenomenon. Radio Spirits has issued this collection in two formats: 20 audio cassettes each holding 90 minutes of material (usually 3 half-hour shows) and 30 CDs each holding 60 minutes. This last is an improvement over other tape/CD issues in which the latter had to be abridged to fit in the shows what the corresponding tape could easily hold without cuts.
Some of the shows here have only a fleeting visit by Sinatra, others have him in short sketches, still others as co-star, and a few as the star himself. For example, he plays a major role when guesting on a Burns &Allen Show but is the star of his own series, "Rocky Fortune," of which this collection offers four episodes. These episodes, by the way, are a good example of Sinatra in his bad years after MGM fired him because of an unfortunate remark he made about the studio head's mistress. They work very well as light comedy mysteries but certainly do not call for any great acting skills. At his nadir, he substituted for Bill Stern in the Sports Newsreel series and did a very good job as narrator.
He is heard in several dramatic roles in "Suspense" and "Lux Radio Theater," and a good deal of jokes are made about his possibly receiving and later his actually receiving an Academy Award for his role in "From Here to Eternity." Included in his many comic guest spots with Fred Allen, Jack Benny, Edgar Bergen, Joan Davis, and Martin & Lewis are endless "skinny" jokes, none of which seem to be repeated except possibly the one about being buried in the back yard by the family dog.
Naturally, you will hear a good deal of his vocalizing, once even with Lou Costello, and that is pretty much the raison d'etre of this collection. And if you have to listen to "Nancy With the Laughing Face" three times, well that is what fathers are for.
The question is whether to purchase the tapes or CDs. I have both. I heard all the tapes in my car and will use the CDs for my classes because of the direct access feature. However the CDs are packaged in such a way that you must touch the surfaces in removing them from their plastic envelopes--and drivers should take note that you need two hands to do so.
As a postscript, I should add that you don't have to be a particular fan of Sinatra to enjoy this collection. You get "A Date With Judy," "Command Performance," "Life With Luigi," a "Savings Bond Show," and so many other radio gems that still linger in the memories of us older crowd--and some that would be totally forgotten were it not for such Radio Spirit compilations as this one.
Book Description
This is the deliciously entertaining memoir by the coal miner's son who became an international star of stage, screen, and television. Keel speaks his mind about his many co-stars, including Judy Garland, Betty Hutton, Tammy Grimes and Katherine Greyson, to name a few.
Customer Reviews:
Honest, interesting story.......2007-08-23
Very honest! You can feel his mood when he wrote it, when you are reading. Strong language. A complex character, this Howard Keel. He comes across as a fine man, a good-natured down-to-earth man. A true gentleman. But he also has a temper! It was interesting read. I give it 4 stars. Not five, but it was good!
a great book.......2007-05-06
A wonderfully written book, I've been a Howard Keel fan for many years, and his book is great. It will make you smile, laugh and feel sadness as you read about his childhood and his entry into show business and how life was not always easy for him. A wonderful actor, with a beautiful voice,a truly great man and entertainer, a big loss to the entertainment world.I loved the book as well as Howard and urge people to read this book.
GREAT HOWARD KEEL!.......2007-03-12
This book is good and easy to read.
Nice memories about Howard Keel and his life for the
classic movies as well as for the modern TV series.
Thank you for an unusual perspective of this late actor.
Recommended!
A true hero of stage and screen.......2006-09-23
Not only is this book good, I couldn't put it down. He was so damned funny! Maybe it wasn't meant to be that way, but I laughed my butt of several times. He may have not been the best writer in the world, but he was original and honest. I could have done without all of the facts of everyone in every show, but I was so amused that it really didn't matter. Without a doubt, one of the greatest voices ever. I wish he'd have spent more time in discussing Doris Day. I always thought they were a cute couple. All in all, one of my favorite books. Maybe it is because I was in awe of his voice, or maybe it's because he didn't dance around the facts. It was a great read, and I highly recommend it.
Don't Hate Doris Day, She's Great and Howard Keel Loved Her!.......2006-09-07
"Betty Burk's" review is nothing more than a dig at Doris Day. "Calamity Jane" happens to be the BEST musical western in the history of film. The insane jealousy over Miss Day's unequaled success as a movie box office star, drove many close to residence in asylums.
Despite the success Miss Day enjoyed in the 50s and 60s as the top female box office star, she was hated by many. In contrast, her co-stars had nothing but praise for her, including the wonderful, Howard Keel, who felt that Day would have been a better choice for "Annie Get Your Gun."
Howard Keel had one of the BEST baritones in the history of film. The very SOUND of his voice was as unique as Doris Day's fabulous voice. Her's was commercial, however, garnering her many top ten popular hits. Like Julie Andrews, Mario Lanza, Jane Powell and Kathryn Grayson, Howard's voice was operatic and not cogent with the popular music sound.
I have read this book, mainly to see what he said about working with Doris and another favorite of mine, Jane Powell.

Customer Reviews:
A Pretty Good Sampling.......2007-09-20
I'll begin by confessing my ownership of more Keillor/PHC CDs than I can count. Within that context I find "APHC--It's Only a Show" above average, just like all of its children. There's some middling fare and some flashes of genius, such as "Ruth Harrison, Reference Librarian" (featuring Sue Scott) and "The Ten-Minute Macbeth." If you tune into the show primarily for its music, here you're not likely to find enough of this. If your preference is GK's monologues, probably you'll not find enough of that. If you're among the 7% of the population who have never listened to the show at all, then this is a sharp snapshot of what you're missing every Saturday evening on public radio. It's only a CD of what's only a (very entertaining) show.

Preserving the First Amendment.......2001-12-30
Robert Vaughn's "Only Victims" is a necessary book with a necessary goal -- stressing the importance of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and citing the dangers of what happens when its cherished tradition is jeopardized. In the name of combatting Communism liberties were jettisoned while the art of stool pigeon information dissemination reached a feverish pitch during Hollywood's blacklist period beginning shortly after World War Two with the advent of the Cold War.
The title of the book, which was the famous actor and author's doctoral dissertation at the University of Southern California, was taken from a statement by Dalton Trumbo that the blacklist period produced "only victims." Trumbo was one of the Hollywood Ten. The Danbury, Connecticut prison facility to which he was sent for failing to name names of alleged "subversives" he encountered had another notable prisoner at the same time Trumbo was incarcerated, former Congressman Parnell Thomas, chairman of the House Un-American Activities Committee, before which the screenwriter appeared.
In addition to ruining careers of many film industry people, the widespread crackdown on writers threatened an industry brain drain which led to some crafty countermeasures. Pierre Boule, who did not understand a word of English, received a Best Screenplay Oscar for adapting his novel, "Bridge on the River Kwai," to the screen. Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson, both blacklistees, actually wrote the screenplay. Trumbo wrote the screenplay for "The Brave One" as Robert Rich. It was a 1956 release and the Oscar won by "Rich" sat on an Academy of Arts and Sciences shelf until Trumbo claimed it almost twenty years later in 1975.
Robert Vaughn performed with gusto and sophistication as television's successful "Mister Uncle" series in the sixties. He performs with equal gusto and sophistication as an author, using his exhaustive research to write a thoughtful work about an important topic and period of American history.
Written when Vaughn was going for his PhD!.......2001-06-29
Robert Francis Vaughn wrote a fine account of Hollywood blacklisting actors and actresses who were considered to be Communists back in the Fifties. He wrote it with a good head on his shoulders, right after his tenure with a fad TV series, his staunch anti-Vietnam views and support of RFK before the ex-Attorney General was killed.
Compelling.......1999-01-05
A strong, detailed account of the Hollywood Blacklist. I first read this book for a Jurisprudence class in '72 and recently re-read it and still could not put it down. Vaughn makes a thorough and insightful case for why we should never forget.

History repeating itself: 1942/2001.......2002-04-19
"If men could learn from history, what lessons it might teach us! But passion and party blind our eyes, and the light which experience gives us is a lantern on the stern, which shines only on the waves behind us!" --Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Many people use the word "propaganda" in a blatantly pejorative sense. For those utterly convinced they know the Truth, any counter argument is by definition wrong and therefore nothing but propaganda. It reminds me of an old World War II film in which a GI is shocked to hear that the Germans consider him "the enemy." After all, he reasoned, he was one of the Good Guys.
Nevertheless, from the moment that news of Pearl Harbor came over the airwaves back on December 7, 1941, we were the Good Guys, those "Nazis" and those "Japs" were the Bad Guys; and the propaganda machines got rolling to reinforce that message in every possible way.
For those who did not experience those days--and (alas) those years that followed December 7--one only has to think back to last September 11 to imagine how our United States reacted to the news over the radio and later in the papers and even later still at the movies where they could actually see the results of the "day that will live in infamy." But history has this funny trick of repeating itself; and for a marvelous example of that fact, it would be a very good thing to get a copy of "America at War" from Radio Spirits.
Here we have 20 tapes (there is also a CD version)of original broadcasts spanning the decade from12-7-41 to 4-4-49 that were designed to keep our hope up during the conflict and give us a positive view of things after it.
In the past, the sets from Radio Spirits that contain 20 tapes have given us 60 hours in all with 1.5 hours on each tape. There has also always been included a wonderfully prepared booklet with lots of illustrations and background information. Therefore I was a little surprised when "America at War" arrived with only an hour on each of the 20 tapes and no booklet at all. However, a few moments' consideration (and an e-mail inquiry to the publicity person) made things clear. The events of September 11 prompted the company to compile and release as soon as was possible this collection of shows related to World War II--and the message therein bears a frightful resemblance to what we are being told at present. Back then, however, there was a lot more poetry, purple prose, and (in short) style.
Among the many shows offered in this set are 7 Lux Radio Theatre dramatizations of then current war films: "Wake Island," "The War Against Mrs. Hadley," "The Navy Comes Through," "Air Force," "So Proudly We Hail," "Salute to the Marines," and "Pride of the Marines." There are 2 from the "Cavalcade of America" series, 4 from "Command Performance," and some miscellaneous dramatic presentations, two of which benefit greatly by the commanding voice of Orson Welles. From the great pool of "team" shows, there is only a "Fibber McGee and Molly" and a "Vic and Sade."
Some of the shows go a little too far for modern tastes in their highly poetic passages and idealized "typical" bits of Americana, no matter how sincere they might have been. Only in the opening "Gulf Screen Guild Theatre" episode and in one other is there even a hint that not everything is absolutely perfect in our country. However, it is the essential message is that our way was still the best in the world, mostly because of the great diversity of our population. I recommend you play tape 11, "New York: a Tapestry for Radio" as your first selection as a great example of what great cities were like (or people wished they were like) before the rage for hyphenated identifications began.
The last side of the 20th tape gives us the most important broadcasts of all: Roosevelt's "Day of Infamy," John W. Vandercook's "Announcing VE Day," "Churchill's "Blood, Tears," on-the-spot reactions to VE Day in New York and Los Angeles, "Bob Trout's "WWII is Over," and MacArthur's "Japanese Surrender." There isn't a social studies teacher in this country that could not use this tape alone for a fantastic unit about life in those times.
The cover carries a warning that "the content of these programs reflects certain racial and ethnic stereotypes that were prevalent during that era." I winced when a character playing a motorcyclist in one of the shows said that he passed "a Jap" and maybe he should have run him over! But that kind of moronic thinking has been repeated quite recently by those who are mindlessly advocating "killing the whole bunch of them," meaning members of a certain religion. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I hope the Radio Spirits people do eventually come up with a booklet for this one; but do not wait until then. You need this set now, especially in the schools.
