"A buen entendedor, pocas palabras," dice el viejo refran. Cuando se dice Mafalda, quien haya vivido en las ultimas tres decadas en alguna parte de Hispanoamerica (e incluso paises de Europa) probablemente sabe que se esta hablando de ese adorable personaje que desborda en genialidad y gracia con sus ocurrencias de niña precoz, asi que no hace falta elaborar al respecto.
Lo que si merece ser notado es que este espectacular volumen empastado (hardcover) de 658 paginas reune todas las tiras de Mafalda publicadas desde que el popular personaje fue introducido en este planeta por el legendario caricaturista argentino Quino. No tiene tiene desperdicio este libro y es altamente recomendable para el fanatico de Mafalda que detesta la sopa al igual que para el neofito en el mundo de Quino.

This book is a compilation of all "Mafalda"'s comic strips. Who is "Mafalda", you might ask?. Well, she is a very outspoken little girl who isn't afraid to say exactly what she thinks about many subjects, including her parents, politics, ecology and her enormous distaste of soup :)
"Mafalda" was created by Argentine cartoonist Quino (the pseudonym of Joaquin Salvador Lavador), and has been published in Latin America, France, Greece, Italy, China and Portugal. Even though "Mafalda" first appeared in the '60s, most of the stories you will read in this book maintain their edge. A great part of "Mafalda"'s charm is that these comic strips allow us to see many matters from the point of view of a young but highly intelligent girl, who isn't old enough to know that speaking her mind isn't always the right thing to do.
All the same, her candid but highly accurate views on many issues will make you laugh, and think. Young children, teens and adults will interpret her words differently, based on their diverse experiences. But I bet all of them will enjoy this book.
You must take into account, though, that this book is in Spanish. That being the case, you should at least know some Spanish, or be eager to learn it (and there is no better reason to do that than wanting to read "Mafalda"!). What is more, and in case you are not ready to buy a complete edition of "Mafalda"'s comic strips, you can always find a smaller and less expensive edition in Amazon.
All in all, I think that "Mafalda" is a treat that the English speaking readers deserve to have. The language barrier is there, but it can be broken with some effort. Truth to be told, it is worth it. Highly recommended!

I know Mafalda from its days in the leftist Italian newspapers as a comic strip. Every strip told an important social truth. But you don't need to be political at all to love her and her varied friends.

This book is good, but I bought it thinking it was the complete collection of comics as you can find in little books (12 issues). This is not the complete collection, therefore, I think that "Todo Mafalda" is better.

I grew up reading Mafalda, and it is amazing to see how the political and social criticism that made us laugh 20 years ago still as valid today as it was back then. I was expecting the complete collection of stories, this volume provide you only with a sample of the best of them. But still a great collectors edition item.

Just wanted to say that this is not only a book that tell you about the situation in Argentina in those days (in a very sutil way). This book is going to make you LAUGH. It is a briliant, smart and a sarcastic book. Its characters come to life after reading a couple of pages, and after reading the first one, you just can't stop reading the others.
I had all the book but lost them, and know I want to get them again. The problem is that the shiping lasts to long...
I don't know if I would recomend these books from people who are not spanish speakers.

Mafalda is my favority cartoon because of many reasons. First, it is a cartoon that will last forever even thought it was written in the '70s. Second, it represents the political and social reality of many developing countries. Actually, the cartoon is ambiented in Argetina but I heard that people from Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Venezuela, and Colombia enjoy the cartoon as well. Third, you can read it over the years and you will still find other interpretations to the stories. Definitely, it is a recommendable book.

I grew up with mafalda, even though it went out of print before I was even born, I love the humor and the way she cares for the world and his problems.
In a recent vacation, I found out about this book and instantly felt in love with it, and since the first page until the last one began to laugh out loud with every single strip, so if you love Mafalda as much as I do, you ought to have this treasure!

I loved this book. I am a big Quino fan and I couldn't believe when I found this previously unreleased material. Apparently, it was left out of the ten books because it contained material that was too sensitive for it's time. This is a great complement to the 10 year book.

Quino is just a mind-boggling genius. Everything is funny, everything is still applicable to things happening today. My dad had most of them when I was a little girl, and I started buying them for myself. Best seven dollars I have ever spent.

I adored these cartoons when I learned to speak Spanish years ago. While Mafalda's political leanings were definitely a product of the time and place, her interpretation of the adult world is hysterical and sharply insightful. I am only sad that I can no longer understand many of them since I haven't used Spanish for so long.

Quino (Joaquin Salvador Lavado) will be cherished throughout history for his creations: Mafalda, Guille, Manolito, Susanita, and my personal favorite, Felipe among many others. You'll love them. Mafalda ha estado en los periodicos hispanos desde los anos 60. Yo compre la serie completa, y es fabulosa. Me atrvo a comparar a Mafalda con Calvin & Hobbes. Ella es divertida, controvercial y lo mas importante, es una nina.Esta serie trae recuerdos de mi ninez. Y nos da la historia desde la perpectiva de una nina. Vale la pena invertir en este libro.

in order to truly enjoy mafalda's sarcasm and insightful comments on her every day life, one must be familiar with the politics and international affairs of the time (1960s). mafalda and her friends are absolutely comical and entertaining.

Este es el número 5 de una serie de libros cuya protagonista es Mafalda, el célebre personaje de Quino. Estas tiras cómicas fueron publicadas en diarios de Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Tucumán, Santa Fé y Montevideo. Mafalda nació en 1963 como soporte de una campaña publicitaria, que rechazó el cliente y Quino conservó. Al año siguiente comienza a colaborar con diarios e inserta las tiras de Mafalda. Se inicia todo el proceso creativo de este popularísimo personaje. En 1968 Mafalda llega a Europa. Desde la Guerra de Vietnam y la carrera espacial hasta el movimiento tercermundista y los derechos humanos, el mundo entero se simboliza en un globo terráqueo que la protagonista cuida, igual que a un enfermo: lo acuesta en la cama, lo abriga y hasta intenta mejorarlo con las cremas de belleza de su madre. Con Mafalda la infancia perdió su inocencia, mientras el género de la historieta pasó de lo social a lo psicológico. En 1973, Quino toma la decisión más desconcertante para muchos: no dibujar más tiras de Mafalda. Desde entonces dibuja en significativas y determinadas ocasiones. Sin embargo, Mafalda está más viva que nunca. Reaparece siempre fresca y renovada en sus nuevos libros y periódicos. Hace cine y televisión. Viaja en la imaginación colectiva de infinidad de naciones que son muy diferentes entre ellas culturalmente. Y llega a los lugares más insospechados, volviéndose familiar a generaciones que no tienen nada que ver con la que vio nacer a Mafalda.
