This book is soo cool. My friends and I have a ball reading this book. It has great content

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2007-04-18

This book was very helpful. When in doubt I turn to reading and I was completely clueless on how to please a man orally. I had no idea what to do before I read this book. I'm surprized my boyfriend put up with me feeble atempts, after learning how to perform correctly. I know he greatly appreciated this bit of literature, even though he laughed when I first recieved it in the mail.

I'd say it's an excellent book for beginners, and help me get the basics down real quick. Although if your looking for something more advance, I would probably try a different book.

5 out of 5 stars Fun! Fun! Fun!.......2007-03-26

I found this book to be really fun!
This book has fun and flirty illustrations throughout. I found it to be rich with quick tidbits that are called Sadie Sez they are neat to read. This book covers anything you need to know head to toe to please your man! It even has backdoor play and helps your relationship open new erotic doors. It will help with lube choices and fun cute names for different techniques she describes them in full detail and pictures! Tickle His Pickle by Sadie Allison is amazing and will even cover impotence in men and give us (the partner) "help" in deciding how to "help" him through it wink wink nudge nudge. As well as being a nice quick read it is a small book so you can fit in your carry on luggage or purse even a backpack. I would highly recommend this book to every type of couple or non couple. She has a few safe sex ideas thrown about in the book. (As her little friendly reminder). High quality material covered in this book. Tickle His Pickle written by Sadie Allison is not for someone without a funny bone (it will make you giggle at her creative take on the male anatomy)! I bought another copy to give away to my friend! Worth every penny I spent to buy this! Just a little recommendation check out her other books she is a spectacular author! Just type in her name and pow books written by her. Enjoy!

Book Description

This book contains no nudity. No profanity. No sexual material of any kind. And yet it just might be the most obscene thing we've ever published!

Penis Pokey is an illustrated board book with a large die-cut hole in its center. Every spread features a dazzling full-color illustration with one thing missing a banana, perhaps, or a fire hose, or a sea serpent. Male readers can complete the illustrations using the talents God has given them.

Are we serious? Yes! Is this funny? Absolutely! Will this be a terrific hit with college students, bachelorette parties, and exhibitionists of all ages? Of course! Penis Pokey is far and away the strangest and funniest novelty book we've seen in a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth it, but don't buy used.......2007-08-18

I intended to read this to a friend, but was so "excited" to be reading that I was unable to fit my pop-up into the hole. So, I made him read it to me instead. We both enjoyed it a lot!

This is "One size fits most", but if it doesn't fit you, congrats! I hope it gives your ego the same boost that I got!

5 out of 5 stars Adult fun for the kid in you!!.......2007-01-25

Reminiscent of the board books of yore, in which your fingers stood in for dancing balerinas or firemen, but updated for the age you are now (wiener cowboys anyone?). One look at the cover will give you the idea, but looking inside will nearly make you pee your pants laughing. A great gift for those you don't know what to get. Sized for even the largest contributor, and secretly funny to even the most uptight.
My only regrets are:
A. I didn't think of it first
and
B. Someone is bound to sue me if I do a photo shoot featuring this product
A great buy

5 out of 5 stars Made the soldiers laugh.......2006-12-15

I sent this to my son who is in the Army in Iraq. He got it today and emailed me that it was quite the hit in his group. They all really laughed. They need things to make them laugh over there... last he heard, someone was running over to the chow hall to try and find a banana... I guess you can only go so far, even in the Army!

5 out of 5 stars suggestion.......2006-11-11

I think it would not be a good idea to economize by buying a used copy of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bedtime Book.......2006-11-10

This book will make you laugh and perhaps even shed a few tears! Hilarious! Mr. Behrens, we can hardly wait to see what you come up with next!

5 out of 5 stars a lovely piece of writing about an amazing place.......2003-07-13

This is one of the books that first drew me to Baja california years ago. Unfortunately much of what Krutch saw has inevitably been swept away by the rising tide of tourism & development, but enough remains that Krutch's lyrical prose is more than a eulogy, one can still find some of teh magic that he describes so well here. I would strongly reccomend this book to anyone planning on visiting Baja California and/or anyone who is interested in the intersection between natural history and literature -one gets both here.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious! Great coffee table book!.......2007-03-08

This book is a fast read. Its full of hilarious facts and great coversation starters for a drunk crowd! Throw it on the coffee table and see who picks it up. I'd recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars a penis is a penis is a penis..........2007-01-19

*The Penis Book* is an interesting "gag gift" of a book that you can give to friends or keep for yourself. In it are interesting facts and tidbits about the penis. This book is designed for anyone (men, gay, straight, women) to read.

In the book, you'll read about if size matters or not. You'll read how straight and gay men treat their penises. You'll learn international words for the penis. You'll learn to vary your metaphors for "spanking the monkey".

There are quirky stuff in there as well. Such as what goes on in the "penis head" toy manufacturing company. You'll read what men think they'll be or do if they didn't have a penis. You'll also read what women would do if they had a penis. You'll read quotes about bulges and self-sucking and odd news.

There are also some little known facts and historical tidbits. A mechanism device was created during one of the World Wars to curb wet dreams. You'll read up on the different names for body piercings in the groin area, such as the Prince Albert. You'll learn of a festival celebration of the penis in Asia.

There are plenty of pictures in this little book. However, none of them are pornographic. There are pictures of penis candies, metal penises, cartoon penises, penis-shaped toys, tattooed penises, painted penises and many others. You'll get to analyzed paintings of penises. It's like a world of penises in this book!

Weird quotes and poems are also provided. You'll laugh, groan and maybe nod in agreement. You'll share with your friends or partner. You'll roll your eyes. You might learn a thing or two.

My favorite parts are the different names of the penis around the world and the different metaphors for "rounding up tadpoles". Some of them would just make you laugh.

There's just so many stuff in this little book, which will surprise you. So, get this book and embrace the knowledge of the penis.

3 out of 5 stars Goofy Coffee Table Book.......2006-02-06

And now I know why they call it a "Prince Albert." Quirky art, Tidbits of history, and tips for men who wish to mingle with polite society. Something fun to leave in the bathroom for guests. Not much you won't already know, but it's funny to read again. All hail the penis!

5 out of 5 stars The Penis Book - A "Must Have" for your collection.......2005-10-15

While in DC last month I saw this book in a store and purchased 4 copies. I read the book and found it completely entertaining, yet informative. It is amazing to me how the penis rules the mind of a man. The book is full of interesting facts and I learned alot. I am going to purchase several more for gifts. I signed the books I gave away. "In the end, they are all dicks. Some are just more special than others." How true!

5 out of 5 stars A must have!!.......2004-11-30

A most enjoyable book that is funny, entertaining...and even educational. There were things in there I had no idea!! For all to enjoy....females and males a like! (A great gift!!)

Book Description

More than sixty percent of today's email traffic is spam, according to email filtering firm Brightmail. This year alone, five trillion spam messages will clog Internet users in-boxes, costing society an estimated $10-billion in lost productivity, filtering software, and other expenses. Spam Kings: The Real Story behind the High-Rolling Hucksters Pushing Porn, Pills, and %*@)# Enlargements is the first book to expose the shadowy world of the people responsible for the junk email problem. Author and veteran investigative journalist Brian S. McWilliams delivers a compelling account of the cat-and-mouse game played by spam entrepreneurs in search of easy fortunes and those who are trying to stop them. Spam Kings chronicles the evolution of Davis Wolfgang Hawke, a notorious neo-Nazi leader (Jewish-born) who got into junk email in 1999. Using Hawke as a case study, Spam Kings traces the twenty-year-old neophyte's rise in the spam trade to his emergence as a major player in the lucrative penis pill market--a business that would eventually make him a millionaire and the target of lawsuits from AOL and others. Spam Kings also tells the parallel story of Susan Gunn, a computer novice in California who is reluctantly drawn into the spam wars and eventually joins a group of anti-spam activists. Her volunteer sleuth work puts her on a collision course with Hawke and other spammers, who try to wreak revenge on the antis. You'll also meet other cyber-vigilantes who have taken up the fight against spammers as well as the cast of quirky characters who comprise Hawke's business associates. The book sheds light on the technical sleight-of-hand--forged headers, open relays, harvesting tools, and bulletproof hosting--and other sleazy business practices that spammers use; the work of top anti-spam attorneys; the surprising new partnership developing between spammers and computer hackers; and the rise of a new breed of computer viruses designed to turn the PCs of innocent bystanders into secret spam factories.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent book on spam.......2006-06-14

This book is a page turner. The book provides a fast-paced account of spammers and spam fighters, their business practices and respective struggles online and offline. I had picked up the book, simply because I was curious about the motivations of spammers and often wondered: What kind of a person is a spammer and who would respond to those emails and actually buy from them anyway? This book can be an eye-opener and I certainly learned a lot from it. Fun side note: A lot of supporting material is available online, as the spam wars are being fought mostly online. Chances are, you'll find yourself browsing news groups and forums to research and find out more about the various people being discussed in the book. The author also provides a blog where he discusses spam and other topics close to his book.

4 out of 5 stars It's A Dirty World.......2005-09-15

After reading this book I felt the need to take a shower.

The world of spam isn't for those who don't want to get their hands dirty... really dirty.

A unique look at the world of spamming, Brian McWilliams outlines what the life of a spammer is like, profiling a handful of spam magnates from the early 2000s (the book focuses on the years 2000-2004 when this was published), and the individuals that work on stopping them from achieving their #1 priority, separating you from YOUR money.

When you read 'Spam Kings' you will discover the lifestyle of a spammer and how/why so many e-mails get into your inbox every day promoting anything from viagra to pirated software and anything else inbetween. You will learn about why when you click the 'From' part of an e-mail you are not able to always determine where this message originated from, and how so many messages (hint: we're talking more than just millions) get delivered in such a little amount of time.

Before reading this book I had a general idea of the type of person that would send spam - what they might look like, how they act, the software used to push so many messages out, but what I was ignorant of was the type and amount of people out there fighting the flow of spam from getting into users email accounts. As much as there is a sect of individuals trying to get spam moved to your inbox, there is another group trying to get this email to never grace your eyes. Anti-spammers (as they are called) frequent discussion groups, contact spammers on their own, and manage lists that are used to make sure that ISPs don't allow spammers to even reach you as hard as they might try.

Brian McWilliams covers a lot of ground in this book, and it's a fascinating look at the underground world of spam. Whether you are a major or minor part of the computer world, this analysis is well worth a look to discover more about why there are so many spammers out there in cyberspace and why many of them are filthy rich.

The only complaint I might have with this book is it seems a bit too long (even at 333 pages) and the author bounces all over the place when he discusses different spammers throughout the book. I understand that he is trying to give many examples and track spammers movements all along the same timelines throughout the book, but it seemed a little too jumpy at times. Not enough so that a reader couldn't follow what was going on, but if a case study approach (chapter by chapter analysis of different spammers) was used instead, this might have been the better approach.

Still, an enlightening read and well worth the time to pick up.

**** RECOMMENDED

3 out of 5 stars too long, not enough technical detail.......2005-09-06

Maybe I am being unkind with 3 stars. The prose style is good. The author has done plenty of research into the background of the spammers and anti-spammers and the book is an intereesting read.
At 300 pages (excluding intro, glossary, notes, index) it is too long. It could usefully have been trimmed to 200 pages.
Anyone wanting nitty-gritty technical detail is out of luck. There is almost none. [I suspect Inside the Spam Cartel is better from that point of view, but I have only glanced at it so far.]
The book is also unbalanced. Yes, spammers are awful. They make email hard to use (one of my email addresses is widely publicised and as a result I get over 100 spam/day, sometimes rising to two or three times that). They have almost wrecked a direct marketing tool that could have benefited consumers and producers alike. But civilised societies do not support lynch mobs etc, and if you read the book carefully, the anti-spammers often seem to break as many laws as the spammers (in a good cause, of course). I was reminded sometimes of the animal rights protesters in the UK (except that the anti-spammers have not physically attacked people or property).
Part of the problem is that the lawmakers seem to be technically inept - CAN-SPAM is not an inspiring achievement.

2 out of 5 stars Left Me Feeling Covered In Ick.......2005-07-22

This is the story of spammers, and those who despise them, the anti-spammers. Basically the spammers do as they please (spam, do Joe-jobs, etc.)and enjoy their money and their power to annoy and frustrate, while the anti-spammers spend hours on-line in efforts to out the identity of the spammers. All this is good of the anti-spammers, of course if the government would get it together we wouldn't have to worry about this problem...or if people weren't so stupid as to order the stuff spammers offer.

Unfortunately, I could not muster any interest in either the spammers or anti-spammers. The spammers were, as the author stated, "arrogant" and "psychopaths," and the anti-spammers seemed quite pitiful - all wrapped up in their very time-consuming on-line battles with the disgusting spammers.

This book left me feeling as though I had eavesdropped for months on people I couldn't care less about. And although the author describes in detail the various activities that spammers engage in, it offers no help to the decent among us who would like to protect themselves from their cruel onslaught.

5 out of 5 stars It's a sleazy world.......2005-06-24

This is about the personal lives, and the trials and tribulations of spammers and spam fighters. A more motley crew of miscreants and their enemies would be hard to imagine.

Sickie number one would be Davis Wolfgang Hawke (aka "Bo Decker," "Michael Girdley," etc.) one-time founder and leader of his self-styled Neo-Nazi group, the Knights of Freedom. He got started in Web hustling by selling knives and Nazi paraphernalia on Ebay. When it was discovered that his birth name was Andrew Britt Greenbaum and that his father was Jewish, he quite naturally lost a lot of cache with his Neo-Nazi followers, and so he closed down his storm trooper Website and turned to spam. He discovered that he had a natural talent for writing the sort of copy that sells sex pheromones, pyramid schemes, porn, and other spam "products," and before he knew it he was hiding stashes of hundred-dollar bills all over his various digs and the nearby countryside.

Sickie number two would be Brad Bournival, Hawke's geeky chess-playing protege who made a million dollars spamming penis enlargements pills and such. Other sickies include big-timer Scott Richter of OptInRealBig who followed 9/11 and the anthrax attacks with flag and gas mask spamming, a kind of low-life huckster with a genius for turning public events into personal wealth. Also mentionable is the really sad Thomas Cowles who hustled mass mailing software but got thrown in jail for criminal contempt of court after allegedly stealing some computer equipment from South Florida spam king Eddy Marin.

The white hats include Susan "Shiksaa" Gunn, Piers "Mad Pierre" Forrest, Francis Uy, Pete Wellborn, Steve Linford and others, many of whom frequented the antispam Web newsgroup Nanae. Compromised and perhaps characteristic of a third category of spam-world denizens would be Karen Hoffman, one-time spam fighter who crossed over to the dark side to work for spammers.

What is really amazing is just how readable this book is. McWilliams has the narrative talent of a novelist, and the investigative skills of a top drawer journalist. I found this bizarre story of greed and human depravity in cyberspace as "unputdownable" as a best-selling true crime tale--which it is. This also serves as a sort of history of outline spam, chronicling the lives and times of those involved while reporting on the various measures taken by email providers and governments to combat the flood of unsolicited bulk emails.

As for the future of spam and spam-fighters, McWilliams gives this appraisal: "...the pernicious root of the spam crisis does not appear to be legislative or technological. It is human..." He adds, "The ability to move relatively incognito online may have created a perfect medium for surreptitious e-marketers...But the Internet has also engendered a corresponding segment of consumers. Call them furtive shoppers" who have a desire for stuff that needs to be delivered in plain, brown wrappers. He concludes, "...spammers sell whatever people will buy from them." (pp. 296-297)

So, the spam problem (costing the world $25-billion a year--estimate by the UN's International Telecommunications Union, p. 295) is not likely to go away until somebody changes human nature. As soon as the large ISPs such as AOL and Yahoo! find a way to filter out spam, spammers find a new way to get around their filters. Short of draconian measures, it would appear that spam at some level of annoyance will continue to be with us for years to come.

Book Description

The almighty penis (a.k.a. dick, schlong, pecker, rod, tool, johnson, etc.) has long been a major object of adoration, revulsion, ridicule, amazement, joy, pride, and even frustration. But does anyone really, fully understand the penis? Novelist, playwright, and journalist Maggie Paley completely submerged herself in the obsessive world of this most forthright of organs -- from ancient Greece to the modern-day Internet -- for well over a year. She pored over scholarly volumes, anthropology texts, and sex-shop glossies; interviewed sex workers, transsexuals, and phallus connoisseurs of all stripes; attended male strip shows and a Hindu lingam ceremony; visited Web sites where men share masturbation techniques; and even searched out a New York City urologist rumored to be in possession of Napoleon's penis. And, yes, she objectively addresses the big question: "Does size matter?" Along the way, we encounter deliciously entertaining and highly informative chapters on penis worship, fellatio, and men who are famous for their dicks, as well as the penis in art, fashion, literature, films, and much more. This handsomely designed bedside companion, delightfully illustrated by Sergio Ruzzier, virtually erupts with facts, fallacies, fantasies, and amazing adventures, and is the perfect gift for women and men, straight and gay. It's certain to develop classic stature.

i'm sure ms. paley is a lovely person, and as such, well-meaning... but that doesn't qualify her as a writer, which she most assuredly is NOT.

this book not just weak, it's actually quite lame. is it funny? the only laughs this astonished reader had were at the amateurish attempts at humor. in other words, she tries so darn hard to be funny you just have to laugh...not with her, i'm afraid, but at her.

the biggest disappointment is the fact that, rather than a book filled with interesting factoids, one finds slips of information...sub-facts. ALMOST facts. pitiful.

i just can't recommend this to anyone (unless it's to learn how NOT to write a book about penises...or any other thing, for that matter). it's not good. not good at all.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK.......2001-05-16

This is a crash course into the male sex organ which explores everything from the physiology of the erection to the role of the penis in different men and cultures. The author went to great lengths to interview sex workers, single and married men and women, as well as transsexuals.

The book touches on every conceivable aspect, characteristic, practice and custom related to the penis. This author has created a book that educates and entertains. It's filled with fact and fantasy. It was fun to read and gave me a greater understanding of a mans powerful body part.

4 out of 5 stars Too Much Information.......2000-11-20

Maggie Paley's The Book of the Penis is exactly that and nothing more. It is all penis all the time. She covers every aspect of the penis in all its wondrous forms. She will shock and delight and make you giggle or squirm (particulary if are already an owner of one of those penii). It is a perfect bathroom book. The only problem, in the end, is that each of the little sections are short and provide no depth and are easily forgetten. After awhile there is a sameness to the book (for obvious reasons) that, perhaps, mirrors its subject. Maybe if one does see enough (or read enough about them) every penis does appear the same and they lose their mysterious magic. Still, a fun read that dissappears in a puff of smoke as quickly as the words depart.

    Book Description

What does it mean if you die before you were born?

An eleven-year-old Texan girl finds out what it was like to live in the Ice Age in this action-packed time-travel adventure. As Esther participates in an archaeological dig in Texas, she is accidentally transported back in time. Living among the Clovis, the mammoth hunters, she learns of a very different childhood in which play is practice for survival and humans are prey for megafauna-scimitar cats, giant bears, and others. Will she ever get back to her own time?

Peni R. Griffin has delivered her greatest time-travel story yet, a thrill-a-page adventure that's also an affecting look at family and what makes a home. Kids will be riveted by this richly imagined vision of prehistoric North America from a writer whose work has been called "expertly plotted" (Kirkus Reviews) and "fascinating" (Booklist).

Discoveries of early American artifacts, clues to this little-known time, appear in the news frequently. The detailed bibliography in this book invites young readers toread and, like Esther, make discoveries of their own. AUTHOR BIO: Peni R. Griffin has written many award-winning novels for middle-grade and young-adult readers. The Switching Well was a finalist for the Golden Spur Award, and The Ghost Sitter was an Edgar finalist and a Golden Sower nominee. She lives in San Antonio, Texas.

5 out of 5 stars Meet the Clovis Indians!.......2007-09-25

I liked this book because it seems so real, it's like you're there. The three characters I liked most were Ester, Ahrva, and Tekinit. They were my friends while I was reading the book. There are about 40 people in the story. I liked how the author made Ester walk through the door to the past and come upon two little girls named Ahrva and Tekinit. I also liked how the author wrote about the family moving from one place to another, and the things they did like hunt and gather food. The author described their ceremonies, how they spoke to one another, and their silly words they tried to pronounce. The things I didn't like were the deaths of four people and how the family cut themselves because they were grieving. I would have liked more suspense in the story like a scimitar cat coming into the camp site or something like that. I think there were too many hard names to pronounce. I really enjoyed this book! I wish there really was a door that made you go back in time! I would recommend that you read this book!

4 out of 5 stars Great book for children of archaeologists.......2007-09-18

I dig for Paleo-Indian remains (legally) in New Hampshire and I have dug in the Texas area where the story is set. Except that I would like to hear more about Esther's family and what happened to her after her return, I really liked this book. Esther is a tough, likeable, believeable person (and the snide tone of first professional review above is entirely unneccessary). Although it has something in common with Peter Dickinson's The Kin, it is much more accessible for younger readers. I don't know whether anything can give an accurate picture of prehistoric life, but the characters and details ring true and I hope Ms. Griffin writes more.

2 out of 5 stars 11,000 years lost and political correctness found.......2007-07-24

Esther is an 11 year-old girl from a middle class Hispanic-American family living in Texas. She loves archeology and jumps at a chance to work on an archeological dig near her home. She gets more than she bargains for when she unwittingly steps through a time portal and is transported back to the Stone Age. She is adopted by a nomadic tribe and must exert all of her energy and social skills to survive.

Her adopted Stone Age tribe has all kinds of modern day problems and values. They also speak a charming multi-cultural language created by the author. This book would have been okay if the author had made it shorter and not appointed herself the politically correct gate keeper of recent ancient archeological finds.

The author uses the Kennewick Man as her example (For those unfamiliar do an Internet search). She informs her readers that all that business about the Kennewick Man being of European descent is a mere rumor. She fails to mention the scientists' clay rendition or the fact that other 9,000 to 11,000 year old skeletons with Caucasian features have been found in the Western United States. In order to make a somewhat informed decision one would need to know how many such ancient skeletons have been found in the Western United States and how many of them were Caucasian, or to be politically correct "Caucasian like."

The author does not broach this subject. Instead she tells her readers to keep an open mind and consider that the first Americans could have had black skin and bright red hair. Humph, I've traveled to five continents and never seen this combination. Using this line of reasoning they could have had purple or green skin. The bottom line is that anthropologists, scientists who study ethnicity, determined, from their skeletons, that they had Caucasian like features. This research is incomplete because the bones were confiscated due to the NAGPRA Act. Scientists were also quick to point out, perhaps under pressure, that they bear no resemblance to modern humans. If scientists win the court fight to study these bones DNA testing can eventually determine the origins of these ancient Americans regardless of whether it offends anyone's preconceived notions.

Perhaps it would mollify the author and her PC supporters to know that the oldest skeleton found in the Americas, so far, was determined to be of African origin. She was found in a cave in Eastern Brazil and given the name Luzia. Please keep in mind that even magazines like Time are not immune PC pressure. Recently Time did a retraction in which they featured on the cover a very corny computer generated hybrid cave man that looked sort of Asian and Hispanic.

One website that I have found helpful is www.cabrillo.edu/~crsmith/luzia.html but I encourage readers to do their own research and make their own decisions. Look up "Spirit Cave Man," "Buhl Woman," "Kennewick Man," "Luzia," and "Solutrean culture and tools." Good luck with your search!

5 out of 5 stars 11,000 Years Lost, But Never Alone.......2006-09-03

I just finished reading this book. The story takes place in modern and ice age times. Esther, who is from the modern finds an clovis point and from shortly after that point she is pulled back in time to the ice age. When she arrives, she must learn to survive and survive she does thanks to her clovis family that takes her in and teaches her. She will learn to hunt all types of animal and pick the right plants, make clothes, and tools. She will do this all, yet she will come to love her family that has taken her in to become part of them.

I found this to be a great read. I would recommend it to anyone of any age. Have a great read!!

    3 out of 5 stars Perfect Ending.......2004-11-13

The book, 11,000 Years Lost, is about a girl,
Esther, who accidentally travels to 11,000 years
ago! She was helping some archeologists with a
site near her home when she walks through a
shimmering patch of air and arrives in the past.
She was taken in by a family group who was near
the place she appeared and she was thought of as
a star-child. She started to understand their
language and rituals after a while. All of the
hunters thought that she was good luck, even
though she knew it was not true. She goes through
countless hardships and joys on her way to try to
get home. To learn more, read the book.
I liked this book. It was not exactly a page
turner, but it certainly was not boring. It
taught me a little about ancient history and what
it would have possibly been like 11,000 years
ago, too. The ending was perfect. It kept me
wondering what had happened to her family group,
but some books should keep you wondering. This
book was not the best book I have ever read, but
it was pretty good. If you like historical
fiction or drama, you would definitely like this
    book. FROM FLAMINGNET.COM

    Book Description

The story of adventure traveler Graham Mackintosh walking almost a thousand miles along the old mission trail from the U.S. border to Loreto, Baja California. The peninsula, seen from the pace and perspective of this Englishman and his burro, offers unique insight into its early history, lore and the burgeoning tourist explosion impacting one of the world's greatest surviving wilderness areas.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting follow up from Into a Desert Place.......2006-08-25

The concept of the trip was interesting, but it could have been better if more of his personal experiences was recorded. There is a lot of historical quotes, which may be of interest to some, but it may have been better to have an initial quote for each chapter instead of breaking it up throughout the story.

    5 out of 5 stars A man, a mission, some wonderful moments........2002-05-22

Fourteen years after his trek around the coast of Baja California, Mackintosh, now a San Diego family man, is again drawn from the common world to a most uncommon journey. This time trekking southward in mountainous inland Baja with a pack burro. [I have had the great pleasure of meeting Graham Mackintosh and talking with him about his earlier book and about this one. For what it's worth, I found him to be the same gentle pilgrim that we meet in his writings.] "There was something very compelling and liberating about surrendering... From now on there would be no Mitsubishi, no Microsoft, no modem, no modern world, and maybe no home or wife -- just [the burro] and me, my goal, my God, and the good, simple people of Baja California," muses Mackintosh in a moment of introspective single-mindedness. Something that I enjoy about his observations, thoughts, and interests, if how often they closely resemble my own; one example being his delight in the company of a certain species of bird which I also particularly enjoy -- and which never fails to exhibit and inspire a certain indescribable joy -- the black phoebe.
As in his earlier book, Into A Desert Place, frequently recurring samplings of the history of Baja (and Alta) California, including the accomplishments and abuses of the Spanish missionaries, are well related and seamlessly augment the story. Mackintosh labels himself 'a poor Christian and a worse Catholic' and, for this reader, many of the books finer moments center in the author's spiritual questionings, insights, struggles, perhaps heresies, visionary experiences, and graceful redemptions. "Behind the cool, hard, smooth rock, I sensed that there was another reality close at hand. That's how far I had come! I had seen the solid, indubitable forms of the great mountains and valleys dissolve into extraordinary visions; and at times I had almost felt myself dissolving into the world... I sensed it wasn't just an illusion. For a few precious moments, I had been freed from my hobbles. I had looked and stepped beyond... The journey... seemed, in part, a vital preparation for a much bigger journey to come."

5 out of 5 stars Will intrigue a wide audience.......2001-03-13

In Journey With A Baja Burro, adventure traveler Graham Mackintosh returns to the remote desert setting of his previous book in his expedition a thousand miles from the U.S. border south to Loreto. He and his burro follow the trail which leads to most of the mission sites along the way; his humorous first-person account will intrigue a wide audience.

5 out of 5 stars Journey With a Baja Burro.......2001-03-01

JOURNEY WITH A BAJA BURRO is a gem of a book. Graham Mackintosh has written of his walk with his burro Mision through the mountains and deserts of the Baja California peninsula so vividly and poetically that it comes alive in our minds. His relationship with his sometimes-exasperating animal companion is funny and touching. Reading JOURNEY WITH A BAJA BURRO will teach you a lot about this relatively unknown Mexican peninsula which extends a thousand miles below the border of California, and you'll have a lot of fun on the journey.

Ann O'Neil, Longtime Baja California resident and author of "Loreto, Baja California: First Mission and Capital of Spanish California"

5 out of 5 stars An Older, perhaps Wiser Baja Journey.......2000-12-25

I had wondered for years whether Graham MacKintosh would write another Baja book. His Into a Desert Place sets a high standard as a down to earth everyman-on-a-journey walking exploration of the fascinating and yet physically challenging Baja peninsula.

This book resumes our acquaintance with Mr. Mackintosh in a much different place in life than Into a Desert Place. Rather than being a Brit teacher wholly inexperienced in Baja ways, he starts the book as a married San Diego "old Baja hand", veteran of many trips and no longer an initiate pilgrim to the ways of the desert peninsula. If the dialogue portions of the books are any guide, I'd guess his Spanish improved a good bit with time. His narrative style remains folksy, simple, intelligent and unadorned.

In Journey with a Baja Burro, Mr. Mackintosh takes a burro on a trek from Tecate, Mexico down to Loreto. His travel itinerary takes him past the many missions along the way, and he gives us interesting bursts of history about each.

One might imagine that such a work would merely mirror Into a Desert Place, but the intrigue here is that the author is a changed man, and his Baja has also irrevocably changed. We still see the down to earth narrative, the simple punning, and the flights into spiritual self-exploration that make the first work so down to earth and yet such a flight of fancy. But here we have a bit of the drama of day to day living that the itinerant wanderer faces when he is no longer 25, and his family waits, rather impatiently, at home. We all grow a bit older, and the beckoning of the open sky tempers for some of us with time--but perhaps not for Mr. Mackintosh.

Mr. Mackintosh's gift is that although he understands that some of what he does is quite remarkable, he also understands the personal frailties that he brings to his courageous expeditions. This book is not the work that Into a Desert Place is, because the author, Baja, and perhaps the world itself is no longer quite the same. But this is a charming return to a alternative by-lane away from the great superhighway of suburban life, and I urge you to put on your turn signal for a walk with Mr. Mackintosh's burro at your earliest convenience. You need not read Into a Desert Place to love this one, but if you read this one first, I'm betting you'll go back and pick up the first one next.

4 out of 5 stars A good guide for the drive down........2005-08-10

While I found the writing style simplistic, fifth-grader-like, the book is a great guide to read as you are bumping along the Transpenisular. It highlights points of interest and trivia that make the traveler more aware of and in touch with the history of Baja. It also provides a brief overview of the pre-history and Mission history of the peninsula which are essential to an understanding how Baja evolved the way it has.

5 out of 5 stars Makes me want to go back!.......2002-03-05

I used to live down in Baja and this book sure makes me want to go back. The author has put a lot of information--history and the like--in his book, but what really comes across is the fun he's had traveling there, especially the people he's met. He writes about all the people I remember, like Mama Espinoza and the Reyes' family, but also about places I haven't been, like down in the East Cape. Can't take a vacation yet this year--guess I'll just reread the book!

2 out of 5 stars Title sounds exciting.......2002-02-24

I have been going to Baja for almost 25 years and have a place near Loreto. I ordered Baja Legends the other day because of the title thinking it would be full of interesting characters and new information. It is more like an encyclopedia. Facts. Lots of them.
