Book Description

The Band, who backed Bob Dylan when he went electric in 1965 and then turned out a half-dozen albums of beautifully crafted, image-rich songs, is now regarded as one of the most influential rock groups of the '60s. But while their music evoked a Southern mythology, only their Arkansawyer drummer, Levon Helm, was the genuine article. From the cotton fields to Woodstock, from seeing Sonny Boy Williamson and Elvis Presley to playing for President Clinton, This Wheel’s on Fire replays the tumultuous history of our times in Levon’s own unforgettable folksy drawl. This edition is expanded with a new afterword by the authors.

4 out of 5 stars Everything I wanted to know..........2007-09-21

This is an excellent source for those wanting to know about The Band. It's always better to have a first hand description of events. There was so much I didn't know or understand about The Band, and to get the information directly from Levon was unbeatable. Very entertaining, easy to read, hard to put down. Excellent portrait of the '50's - '60's Toronto club scene of which very little seem to be known, but was very relevant as a lot of important figures came from it. It'll make you want to listen to the albums again, but much more closely. You really want to get a real taste of what it was like to be around these great musicians and men.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book !.......2007-08-23

Levon with Richard and Rick and Garth tell it like it was in a "down home" way. I found it a fascinating read that made a lot of their songs take on a whole new meaning for me. After reading it I had to pull out all the old Band LP's and was delighted to hear them again with a new perspective. If you liked The Band... BUY THE BOOK !!

From Aerosmith's heyday in the late 1970s, which they spent "gacked to the nines" (as lead singer Steven Tyler puts it), to the Aerosmith of today--clean, sober, and adored by millions--the band has a long, hard history. Walk This Way chronicles the whole story: drugs, booze, and all.

Prefaced with the now familiar rock-star "intervention," when Steven Tyler's loved ones cornered him in his manager's office in 1986, the autobiography traces Aerosmith's twisted road, from their New Hampshire roots to their success in Boston to the worldwide fame that they long craved and currently enjoy. Tyler kicks off this rock & roll exposé, briefly recounting the history of his ancestors in Italy and sharing incidents from his own Northeast childhood. The book is written in interview style, with all five band members talking candidly about the good times--and the bad. We also hear from girlfriends, wives, friends, and various hangers-on.

The story of Aerosmith and their constant ups, downs, and detours never fails to grab you and force you to read another page--if only to see what train wreck awaits around the next corner. Walk This Way is a must-read for devoted fans of Aerosmith as well as anybody who wants to live the full-on '70s rock-star life--without having to go through rehab. --Paul DeBruler

Book Description

Hang on, it's a hell of a ride!

From the band that lived by the motto "Anything worth doing was worth overdoing" -- Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Brad Whitford, and Joey Kramer -- comes a quarter century of rock godhood: the life, the music, the truth, the hell, the lost years, and the raunchy, unsafe sex.

And, of course, the drugs.

But after crashing in a suffocating cloud of cocaine, crystal meth, and heroin, Aerosmith rose up from the ashes to become clean and sober -- and reclaim their rightful title as World Champion Rockers. Learn how they did it in a book that is pure Aerosmith unbound: where they came from, what they are now, and what they will always be -- a great American band.

You couldn't make this stuff up! I'm 40 something as well and from the mid-west. This book will take you back in time for sure. It's a ride that we lived in that time. If you read this book you should be glad we are alive. Nothing but fun to read and hard to put down. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A Great American Rock band's saga.......2007-06-12

I really liked this book. I'm probably biased, being from the same area as Aerosmith, but I really liked the details of the behind the scenes business aspect of this book. That they we that messed up up on drugs and totally crashed and burned only to rise again is rare and really remarkable. If anyone doubts they are one of the greatest American hard rock bands, just put on "Rocks" and listen carefully. One of the best hard rock albums of the genre and possibly of all time period.

OK....I'm old.I was part of the whole Kiss vs Aerosmith thing during the 70's(I was a Kiss freak). This book is an AMAZING look into the history of Aerosmith....warts and all.The sex,the drugs....everything!I found the dynamic between Steve Trler and Joe Perry especially interesting.Actually, the book dives deep into the relationships between ALL the band members,girlfriends,managers....everybody!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-02-15

This book is well written. Despite the many voices blended together, the book is very readable, much more so than its Motley Crue counterpart :dirt"

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2006-06-18

This history of Aerosmith shows the incredible fortitude that is required to reclaim your throne. Great to hear how it was from the beginning... in their own words and in the words of their friends, wives and lovers... all the drugs, sex, pain and loss.

Steven is the consummate showman... always smarter than the next guy, always a ladies man. He is delicious, confusing and talented. In order to be a great singer, you must have charisma and attitude. It pours from Steven in buckets.

No matter what you read or think about Aerosmith, good or bad, don't forget the amazing music this band has put out for decades. Keep going, guys. I'll always be a fan!

4 out of 5 stars Understanding Thinking and Breaking Paradigms.......2007-01-06

This book opened a lot of doors in my mind that I've been trying to get through for a long time.

This book is a great mix of topics that helped me gain a different understanding (several mental models are proposed in the book that offer a mental paradigm shift) of the relationship of emotion to thought to psychology, philosophy, belief, truth, etc. and helped me gain a historical and cultural understanding of the belief structures I have working in my life.

In this book, De Bono proposes that critical thinking is powerful, but less than perfect, if it is the only thinking we use. He proposes that Critical/Rational thinking as developed by Socrates/Plato has provided the means for our technological success today, but has also blocked our progress as humans because it is only one kind of thinking (black or white, right or wrong). There are other ways of thinking and when they are used in conjunction with rational thought we have a better chance at improving our human interaction and the world we live in.

I have a true, good friend who recommended this book. I had asked him for his opinion on why I feel the need to "evangelize" other people. "Why do I feel this need to convince other people that my beliefs are correct and that theirs are somehow flawed if they don't match mine exactly?" I've observed how this practice has had poor effects in my own life and also how similar practices have not had good effects in the world e.g. War, Politics, Religion, etc. On a technical level we've made all kinds of progress, yet on a social level we are still acting like cavemen!

So, anyway, this year I've been studying motivation, behavior, psychology, belief, various religions, etc. attempting to understand myself and how/why I interact with other people in the way I do even though I know my confrontational approach is less than Ideal. This book gave me some breakthrough thinking on this subject and I'm still sorting through the debris of my former beliefs on human motivation as a result. This is why I feel like I will give this book 5 stars in a few months after I've had a chance to study it more. Right now, I'm wondering if I've been logically tricked...

One thing is for sure, I didn't "get" De Bono's 6 Hats until reading this book. I bought "SIX THINKING HATS" at the same time I bought "I'M RIGHT, YOU'RE WRONG" and it seems like these two books together offer practical approaches to revolutionize our thinking patterns and improve our human interactions.

Do these ideas result in practical change and improvement for myself and world I live in? I will need to report on this later. As a intellectually stimulating book I give it 5 stars. For pragmatism, I give it 3 because I haven't tested it yet. So, for today, I give it 4 stars overall.

Note: This was not an easy book to read. It seemed like de Bono took forever to get to his points. In fact, at one point, I skipped a few chapters and then found I had to go back and make them up. His teaching seems so simple in hindsight! But de Bono is building a logical argument throughout the book and while it seems like he is taking too long to get to his points, the points are WORTH IT! This is NOT a book on practical tools. He has written other books about practical tools (of which he reminds you quite often). This book provides a foundation on which to develop practical solutions.

1 out of 5 stars Too much analysis of the problems and minimal solutions.......2003-07-17

I agree with Daniel Crew of Nashville. This book has a few gem in it but it takes too much effort to dig them out. Dont get me wrong, I think highly of De Bono's thinking tools but this book failed to deliver against the expectations he never stop building up through out the entire book. AND he came across as a really insecure person because he constantly need to give himself credit for ideas he has already established as 'his' - which is irritating.

He did a pretty good job of explaining why the current system of thinking is archaic but he failed to explain in a simple and clear manner the solution that he is proposing - that is because he only made references to them - you wont find them in the book, you need to go out and buy more of his books to learn about those methodologies.

So, this book ended up sounding like a really long brochure on why you need to use his thinking tools and methodology. Save yourself the time and money. Just go out and buy Six Thinking Hats and the other books. He does a pretty good job in explaininig why the tools work and why you need them there again.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste time here.......2002-12-27

For the most part, this book seemed contrived and impractical. There are a few good ideas in here, but they are buried. It takes a lot of effort to sort through and pull them out. I have three main beefs with the book:

1) The author refers to himself and his works WAY too often. There is definitely more than Narcism there, I think maybe he is his own hero. But I don't find lateral thinking to be that fascinating. He satkes his reputation on this concept. "Lateral Thinking" is the same thing as "mechanized creativity."

2) There is a fundamental flaw in the book that shoots itself down. The entire book is about how we should avoid absolutes and deal with perceptions instead of concrete facts. Then it proceeds to claim that the author was "right" about this and that in previous works and it makes assumptions like that more food production is a goal to aspire to. Ultimately, this is a good "exploration" of a subject the author has not applied to himself. As such, I don't feel he should be regarded as speaking with authority.

3) It is about 200 pages too long. There are 3 redundant forwards, followed by a lengthy introduction (32 pages), followed by a redundant introductory section. On page 110, the author is still referring to things he intends to do with the book. Don't talk it up, just do it.

There are more than 70 pages building up what the book will do, and the rest of the book just fails to live up. ONE of the THREE Forwards says that the book is in simple terms because De Bono is a master and can dumb it down. Not so. It is in simple terms because it is not a complete concept and the whole book is filled with testaments to the author's lack of understanding of his own concepts.

All that said, I actually do enjoy the "lateral thinking" exercises of De Bono. I suggest spending your reading time there instead of here.

5 out of 5 stars A concise explanation of a complex subject........2001-01-11

This book stands out as one of the best explanations of how the mind works, and doesn't work, and how to make make the best use of your own. He destroys in a few paragraphs a lot of deeply entrenched misconceptions that western society has been operating under for centuries. I've seen a lot of other long and wordy attempts that fail to get half as far as De Bono has in this little book. It's densely packed with concepts, each touched on just long enough to give the reader the main points, without all the flowery self-indulgent nonsense that so many other writers of books for the lay person love to fill their pages with. De Bono gets to the point. And good points they are! Excellent book.

Andy Warhol was so enamored with Polaroids that he made special arrangements with the company to purchase all the overstock film of a discontinued model of camera. A similar photographic fetish is the organizing principle of Don't Try This at Home. For kicks, rocker and author Dave Navarro installed a carnival-grade photo booth in his L.A. home. The book documents a year's worth of visitors to Navarro's pad who all stepped into the booth to get their mug shots snapped.

The resulting dispatch from Hell is as hard to draw one's eyes from as a twelve car pile-up. Intermingled with a parade of rock stars, models, prostitutes, drug dealers, pizza delivery guys, and housecleaners are a series of observations and interviews with Dave and his co-author Neil Strauss. Strauss, co-author of other tomes for Jenna Jameson, Marilyn Manson, and Motley Crue, operates less as an editor than as a ringmaster to this debauched thing rock stars call a lifestyle.

Don't Try This At Home is one rollicking contact high of a memoir. Just set it on the coffee table at your home and watch how quickly it snares its readers. --Ryan Boudinot

Book Description

Former guitarist for Jane's Addiction and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, superstar, sex symbol, and reality television favourite Dave Navarro shares a year in his life in the Hollywood hills, featuring stories and strips from his infamous photo booth.

When Dave Navarro decided to open the doors of his house in the Hollywood hills to the chaos of the valley below, the only rule was, 'You come in the house, you get in the photo booth.' The result is a diary, a sociology experiment, a documentary of Hollywood, and an exercise in exhibitionism. Caught on film are strippers, Kurt Loder, Marilyn Manson, pizza delivery boys, Rose McGowan, Keanu Reeves, record executives, Scott Ian, Billy Corgan, hookers, Flea, Billy Zane, drug dealers, Angelyne, Leonardo DiCaprio, the cleaning lady, Leif Garrett, Natalie Imbruglia, and everyone else who came into the house. Some are zany, some inebriated, naked, hamming it up, looking beautiful, or looking ugly – the photo booth tells no lies.

Accompanying the strips are hilarious stories, musings, tell–all anecdotes, and other glimpses into the lifestyle of one of the most decadent rockstars of our time.

This chronicle of a year in Navarro's life is also a gritty portrait of his descent into drug use and self–destructiveness, and his struggle to find meaning.

Designed by the mad genius who also produced Manson's, Mötley Crüe's, and Mankind's books, Don't Try This at Home is a visual masterpiece, a celebrity exposé, and a shocking, hilarious, and irresistible read.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Extremely Uninteresting and Boring.......2007-09-28

I was excited when I first read an excerpt from this book in Rolling Stone, only to have it come out a few years later (legal troubles prob). In the end, it is a bland and boring read about a self-absorbed loser whose life is really not interesting. There is no insight into anything, it is a stale narrative with nothing revealed.

5 out of 5 stars great read.......2007-05-31

very interesting and you want to keep on reading hard to put down, many photos included.

1 out of 5 stars Boring and poorly written.......2007-04-21

I truly wanted to like this book but found it completely self-indulgent and just boring. Navarro tries so hard to come of as an intellectual and really just comes off as a loser with too much time on his hands. I had to force myself to finish it - I'm glad I bought it from bookcloseouts.

4 out of 5 stars in depth look into life of a rock star/drug addict.......2007-02-21

Over the course of a few years, Neil Strauss takes you through the high and low points of a rollercoaster ride called Dave Navarro. The reason for the 4 stars is because of the slow start but it does end with a bang including his meeting Carmen Electra and the subsequent early stages of their relationship. Overall very enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars A Wild Ride.......2006-10-07

This book was very hard to put down for me. Why? Because I was fascinated by how far Dave Navarro put himself out there emotionally with this book. Parts of it did not paint him well at all. Crawling around in Dave's head for the three sittings it took me to finish wasn't always easy...but breathlessly now on the other side I respect him as a person, flaws and all. Just like the rest of us. To reveal so much of yourself to the crushing scrutiny of mass society when your persona is your bankable commodity shows incredible fortitude and being pretty darn secure in who he is as a person.

Good for you Dave. Thanks for the wild ride.

Book Description

Bjork is the most successful radical rock experimentalist of her generation. Contrary, inimitable, and gloriously her own, she has awed her famously dedicated fans for more than a decade with a swooping, querulous voice that has been likened to a glass not quite breaking. Bursting onto the Icelandic musical scene with a precocious album at the age of 11 and a series of releases in the 1980s that notably include her work with the Sugar Cubes, Bjork soon found herself gaining international renown as she released the jazzy Gling-Glo and her breakout solo album Debut. Since then the superstar wordsmith has continued to produce idiosyncratic, well-received works. In 1995 Bjork combined hit-making tunes with her maverick sounds to produce Post, and then after working with an army of collaborators, Telegram. Two years later, Homogenic took listeners on a compelling journey through the outer reaches of electronica. Again abruptly switching directions, Bjork starred as a blind mother in the critically acclaimed Dancer in the Dark, producing the renowned Selmasongs soundtrack. Returning to explorations of herself the next year, she produced Vespertine, an intimate and sensual fan favorite that continues to sell well. Drawing on years of experience covering Bjork and her industry, music journalist Ian Gittins explores and celebrates the creative processes and motivations behind her amazing career and musical history. With 70 color and black-and-white photographs, Bjork is a must-have for her legions of devoted fans.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Maybe 5 stars, hard to say.......2006-02-18

I've always thought that Bjork was just the loveliest lady, but I haven't seen or heard much of her. Yesterday I picked up this book at Barnes and Noble for $4.98, yes that's four ninety-eight, and it is just chock-full of so many pictures and clear tidy text that I am very impressed. It may not be the most in-depth work about her, but it seems fairly accessible, and she is not terribly well-known beyond a certain reputation as being a bit "out there." She's an artist, not a commodity like so many musicians, and it's not what we expect, and people forget to look beyond the far-out sound bite or video clip.

5 out of 5 stars The Words Of Bjork.......2005-03-07

This is a good reference book if you want to know what Bjork is saying AND meaning in her songs. This book has helped me understand some of her Icelandic accent, which I think is awesome. Some of her songs get so twisted in my head, (I am always changing lyrics anyway) that I have to use this book to know what she is really saying. I have lots of fun with the English language, Bjork does speak very well, but if you have a hearing problem like I do, this book will make for good reading.
This book has mostly all of her songs, the reasons why she wrote them, it opens up a whole new realm for any Bjork fan.
The photography is great, also. Bjork is a Beautiful Icelandic Princess with much talent.

4 out of 5 stars there's more to life than this.......2003-08-21

my mom brought this book back for me from london, because at that time (last november) it was next to impossible to find in the states. the book looks nice on the outside. nice oversized book, with thick glossy paper. and the idea of the book is nice, the story beihnd every song + info on the cubes/gling-glo and early stuff.

however, the book does fall a little short, content wise. the information gathered is mostly pretty well known (keep in mind i am a total björk dörk :p ) but the pictures in the book totally make up for the (lack of) content! there were so many pics i have never seen before, and huge, oversized glossy pictures! i was in heaven :)

i was really hoping for more information about the sugarcubes, which is why this book didn't get a 5 star rating! they only talked about the 'cubes, and didn't get in to the meaning behind the songs.

3 out of 5 stars a fine start for a curious wannabe bjork fan.......2003-02-08

I guess since I've been a Bjork fan for a while now, I was hoping to find some new insight into her songs through this book. If you want to learn the intentions and meanings behind Bjork songs, you're better off going to her website or searching online for interpretations or interviews. This book, while providing some solid background information about Bjork, does not provide too much information about the songs themselves. It seems that the author took random quotes and tried to apply them to the songs as he saw fit. The timeline is useful, and pictures are gorgeous. The descriptions for each song are not more than a couple of paragraphs each, far too short to even get an introduction for a Bjork song. It is a good collector's item--that's why I bought it. But if you're looking for some answers, like, what do those bjorkish words mean?, look somewhere else...like the 4um

4 out of 5 stars Bjork Fans Need This.......2003-01-30

A fine overview of Bjork's career, with lots of good photos, and a track-by-track discussion of each album, beginning with her pre-teen "Bjork" effort and concluding with "Vespertine." (There's also a discussion of all B-sides and collaborations.) Mr. Gittins is apparently not a musician--he can't tell a recorder from a flute and describes a sitar as "Indian strings"--but he's otherwise well-informed and appreciative of Bjork's genius without going overboard. Highly recommended to Bjork fans.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2007-06-21

First I have to say that this is a wonderful book. It's a slow read but full of a wealth of information. I've given away my first copy and have ordered a second for my own use. Though some have complained about the footnotes I find them of great use and one of the reasons why I think the book is wonderful. I would have taken me months (if not years) to research the same information on my own. Thanks Steve.

2 out of 5 stars Decent for dealing with Fundamentalists; otherwise, useless.......2007-04-02

Supposing there was someone who along with rejecting the doctrine of Apostolic Succession also denied the historical fact that Peter was in Rome and that the Papacy existed, then this book would convert such an individual (assuming he was of good will) to a different opinion. I cannot deny that this is an excellent book for the Protestant polemicist or anyone else of like mind who has not taken the RC papal claims seriously. It is, after all, an undeniable fact that Catholicism is much closer to apostolic Christianity than Protestantism. However, the sad truth is that Upon This Rock (UTR) is, like the Westminster Confession, a proof-text disaster, an exercise in historical revisionism and excessive question-begging.

The fact that Steve Ray has written a lackluster apologetic manual does not imply that the RC papal theory is not true or that better arguments have not been put forward elsewhere; it means only that you will not find those arguments here. Ecclesiastical history as depicted by real Church historians (Catholic & non-Catholic) completely contradicts the claims made by Steve Ray, period. Truth be told, most of my views concerning Church history and papal primacy have been shaped and influenced by Catholic historians; I don't even have to bring in non-Catholic sources to construct a critique.

Steve Ray doesn't appear to have an adequate grasp of the RC papal theory he's defending which would explain why he overestimates the importance of certain quotes, downplays the importance of other quotes, and doesn't notice when the text he has cited actually conflicts with the definitions of Vatican I's Eternal Pastor. It doesn't matter if two of the necessary conditions are met if another four are not satisfied. For example, according to Vatican I, the pope's special perogatives come *immediately* from Christ Himself, not from conciliar decrees, but Ray cites texts which assert that the pope's ecclesial powers were *given* to him through conciliar decrees; this is a very big mistake. Same goes for the basis of Roman primacy. Quotations that he should be trying to explain away he uses as evidence.

He ignores nearly all of the available counter-evidence. He, for the most part, ignores the patristic exegesis of the relevant Petrine texts in the New Testament. He also ignores the opposing statements from the Fathers, along with those from various Local and Ecumenical Councils. This is an extraordinarily one-sided work. Here is some helpful advice for those upcoming Catholic apologists:

"This is not a book to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force." (Dorothy Parker)

5 out of 5 stars Good Apologetics Resource.......2007-01-05

If you can manage to battle your way through the format of this book (%10 text and %90 footnotes) it is a great book to have in your library. It is not a reason-based approach to the issue of the primacy of Rome in the early Church as it is an overwhelming number of references and citations. The argument relies mostly on historical proof, however, it can get a bit tedious at times.

As a soon-to-be Catholic I think this book erased any questions in my mind about how the early Church regarded Rome and it is a nail in the coffin of independent congregationalist fundamentalists.

It is a great reference book which could be used by armchair apologists, if you are into that sort of thing. But it will require a bit of discipline to finish this book.

3 out of 5 stars Borrow or buy used.......2006-10-28

The book was OK. I wish I'd borrowed it, though.

Let me explain... As a former university academic and a career R&D guy, I think it's important to cite one's sources carefully. However, this book has the oddest "style" of any book I have ever read. Basically, the book is a list of patristic quotations defending papal primacy. That's fine and useful as far as it goes, but the "book" part of the book is in the footnotes. Many, many pages are 80% (or more) footnote and 20% (or less) normal text. That makes reading the book a different sort of experience.

Beyond that, if you already agree with the Roman Church (as I do) about papal primacy, it's a great patristic reference source. Comprehensive, in fact. But if you are wondering about the doctrine, perhaps because you are considering converting to the Roman Catholic Church, I think you'll be very disappointed. I'm sorry I can't recommend a better book as I am a new convert going through the RCIA, but I cannot believe they do not exist. I think Wikipedia does a better job with the Big Picture, and I am not a big fan of Wiki.

3 out of 5 stars The Mother of All Footnotes.......2006-05-31

Ray's book is a marvellous defense and historical explanation of papal primacy. He clearly knows his sources and the arguments of the Protestant and Eastern Orthodox dissenters. But why in heaven's name did his editor allow so many extensive and bloated footnotes? The footnotes do contain essential information, but these should have been part of the text. Constantly going from text to footnotes could aggravate one's vertigo. Some extended footnotes are even needlessly repeated such as that dealing with St Augustine on pages 92-93 and again on page 227. The book's information is valuable but the editing job is terrible.

3 out of 5 stars Amusing enough with a couple of side splitters.......2006-12-27

This is the first of Gavin Edwards' series of misheard lyrics. It's definitely funny at points and some of the lyrics are mangled beyond belief. Some of the misinterpretations are pretty well known but some seem a bit far fetched (A la "STOP THE CATBOX"/"ROCK THE CASBAH" of the Verizon commercials of late) It's interesting to note that Hendrix knew of the misheard version and at some concerts performed "Purple Haze" with the incorrect lyrics. (Avoid the second one in the series, its not very funny)

4 out of 5 stars Simply E.......2006-11-06

While I found most of the erroneous lyrics very funny, I also found there were a few songs that were missing.

3 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2006-03-20

It wasn't what I expected. It is kind of amusing however if actually sing the tune with the misheard lyric they provide.

5 out of 5 stars Great to read together.......2005-06-10

My best friend and I picked up a copy of this book at a used book store on a lark, and afterwards, we stopped for ice cream. We brought the book in with us, and began to read. It was hysterical! It was a lot of fun to read the misheard lyrics together, and we were laughing so hard we had the attention of everyone else at the ice cream parlor. My best friend picked a guy up because of this book. Fun stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Lyrics, Please!.......2003-08-31

I have read and sung so many lyrics in my career - and heard so many funny mis-interpretations of lyrics. My own kids "murdered" some lyrics when they were small. This book is a kick! Just sit back and relax and enjoy some chuckles at the end of the day!!

3 out of 5 stars It was as the title suggested.......2007-03-26

Most of this book I found interesting. I would have liked more of the section that discussed certain songs and the story around them and less of his poetry (?).
The intro explains that this project was should have included CD and DVD and that would have been nice. He goes on in the into to say that if you have a coffee table, use this book to balance the shorter leg. Although I don't agree in total, I give it 3 stars because of the pure joy and entertainment IG has given me since the mid 60s and the fact that some of the read was a hoot. He has lived (and is living) a great life and would have enjoyed hearing more about it.

Style Weekly

Transports readers directly to the wild and forgotten mountains of North Carolina and to the secret, hopeful places in a young man?s heart.

From the author of Gap Creek?the international bestseller and winner of the Southern Book Critics Circle Award for fiction?comes the gripping story of two brothers struggling against each other and the confines of their 1920s Appalachian Mountain world. Muir and Moody Powell are as different as Jacob and Esau. Muir is an innocent, shy young man with big dreams and not the slightest idea of what to do about them. Moody, the older, wilder brother, takes to moonshine and gambling and turns his anger on his brother. Through it all, their mother, Ginny, tries to steer them right, while dealing with her own losses: her husband, her youth, and the fiery sense of God that had once ordered her world. When Muir discovers his purpose in life, the consequences are far-reaching and irrevocable: a community threatens to tear itself apart and his family is forever changed.

This Rock is the most ambitious and accomplished novel yet from an author whose sentences ?at their finest . . . burn with the raw, lonesome pathos of Hank Williams?s best songs? (The New York Times Book Review).

?Homespun pleasure.? ?Nelson Taylor, Providence Journal

?Hell-bent and excellent . . . I can?t shake the first scene. . . . resonant . . .

moving.? ?Katherine Whittemore, The New York Times Book Review

?Morgan?s prose is sharp and saturated with details . . . [imbued] . . . with a sort of lyrical sheen . . . both moving and spiritual.? ?Michael Paulson, Bookpage

Robert Morgan, the author of the award-winning novel Gap Creek, is a native of the North Carolina mountains, where he was raised on land settled by his Welsh ancestors.

5 out of 5 stars Morgan Revives 1920s Appalachia.......2005-02-17

I knowed this be a gud book (English teachers cringing, the bad American English and spelling is intentional). Robert Morgan, author of the bestseller "Gap Creek," transports us to a 1920s Appalachian Mountain town in "This Rock."

The story takes place over a three-year period and focuses on the polar-opposite Powell brothers, Muir and Moody. Muir is ambitious and quiet. Moody is an appropriately named, unstable character that runs moonshine and gambles.

Morgan uses the perspective of Muir and Ginny Powell, the brothers' widowed mother, to narrate the brothers' conflicts. Remarkable details are laid out for the reader to behold and enjoy like gems. Morgan paints the beautiful landscape of the mountains, a feast for the mind's eye. The drama echoes stronger due to Morgan's inclusion of mountain dialect. It's as if the author time-traveled to the locale and used the Edison gramophone to record the hillbilly speech.

The story builds nicely as Muir's decision to build a church atop the mountain has ripple effects throughout the community, most notably his brother Moody. "This Rock" is a page-turner illustrating the common and difficult aspects of 1920s Appalachia life. In fact, I bet after you've reached the last page, the cool morning dew will be lingering on your hands.

3 out of 5 stars Sequel??.......2004-06-12

I really enjoy Robert Morgan's work. But I read The Truest Pleasure first. I was very disappointed that they skipped over a lot in this second book. Don't read this if you haven't read either book...

When did Jewel die? This really bothered me. Also when did U.G. become Muir and Moody's cousin- Florrie's son, did she adopt U.G. when he was older? This is the only thing that would make sense since U.G. was older than Muir. The last we knew, Ginny was the only one who had children, at least according to the first book. There was a huge gap in between books, that didn't explain enough. However, I did like how they brought the characters from Gap Creek into this book. Hank and his wife and Annie their daughter who now Muir likes... but it didn't really finish their story (Muir and Annie).

4 out of 5 stars A hard life in the outback of the South........2004-01-27

This fascinating story is my introduction to Robert Morgan, a New York Times Bestseller, writer of six earlier novels, lots and lots of poetry and even a textbook on poetry.

The first half follows the disparity between the two young brothers, so different and yet so much alike, and all the despair of growing up poor in the 1920's.

Mainly, though, it is the account of the younger, Muir who breaks out of the farmlife of rural North Carolina. "For once in my life, I was going to do what I wanted, what I had to do."

On his trek northward, he drives his model T through the Cumberland Gap from Tennessee to Kentucky and ponders on the Civil War battle there where his Confederate grandfather died. He uses poetry to describe his feelings of "driving through history to the future."

However, he's not sophisticated enough to endure the harshness of the weather and the Northerners. He is the son with the conscience, so he returns the car and takes the train on another adventure. A year after his experiences on the Tar River, he sets out to work on his major project, which turned into a memorial for his brother Moody. A mountaintop feels closer to Heaven, just as I felt the first time I went to Oneida, TN.

Morgan is poetical in his descriptions of the wonders along the way, but I wish he knew grammar a little better. He is a good storyteller and teaches life's lessons well. This volume is worth reading, even if you do cry at the ending.

4 out of 5 stars Takes you to the mountains.......2003-11-13

As you read this book you will be transported to the mountains. The vivid descriptions and colloquial dialogue caused me to care about the characters and their outcomes. I also love the way Morgan switches perspective. Some chapters are from the point of view of Muir. He is one of two brothers and the "Abel" character in a kind of Cain and Abel allegory. Moody is the "Cain" character, but the book doesn't exactly parallel the bible story. Other chapters are from the point of view of their mother, Ginny. I really felt for Muir and wanted him to succeed. One even begins to root for Moody toward the end. The last chapter concluded and tied together the many journeys the reader takes with the various characters in a poignant and satisfying way. The EPILOGUE, however, ends with a strange twist that was a downer for me. That's why I only gave 4 stars. I was hoping for a different ending, and a little confused by what Morgan wrote on the last few pages. Perhaps what makes it good fiction is that I'm still thinking about it. Our church is using this for a churchwide Book Club. There are many life lessons here concerning work ethic, confidence, being true to yourself and your family, and finding your true calling.

4 out of 5 stars vivid and poignant tale......................2003-07-17

Robert Morgan recreates the tough life of the 1920's in the Carolina mountains. This is a tale of two brothers searching for the meaning and purpose in their lives. One brother Muir tries many different things, from preaching, to hunting, to building. Moody the older brother appears to be a callous, uncaring young man with a penchant for alcohol and trouble. Their mother attempts to let them lead their own lives but the clashes that are the result are heartbreaking for her. This is a great story of family and faith. Robert Morgan delivers the unique dialogue that breathes life into this tale of a poor mountain family. A delightful surprise is the appearance the main characters from his novel Gap Creek, which brings the feeling of familiarity to the story for those who have had the pleasure of reading that novel. Robert Morgan is a gifted Southern writer who spins a vivid and poignant narration of life for Ginny and her sons, Moody and Muir.

I found Julia Baird's book on her half-brother, John Lennon, well-written and very enjoyable. I've read dozens of books on John and the Beatles, and hers provided a unique perspective which definitely humanized this "icon" in a way few others have. These days it is hard to find anything but the highly-sanitized, Yoko-centric version of John, but this look into his childhood, adolescence and later years has a ring of truth to it. He lived more than half of his life before Yoko, and this book reminds us of that.
