The answers, my friend, are in Neil Strauss's entertaining book The Game. Strauss was a self-described chick repellant--complete with large, bumpy nose, small, beady eyes, glasses, balding head, and, worst of all, painful shyness around women. He felt like "half a man." That is, until a book editor asked him to investigate the community of pickup artists. Strauss's life was transformed. He spent two years bedding some fine chiquitas and studying with some of the North America's most suave gents--including the best of them all, the God of the pickup "community," a man named Mystery.

Mystery is an aspiring Toronto magician who charges $2,250 for a weekend pickup workshop. He is not much to look at: a cross between a vampire and a computer geek. But by using high-powered marketing techniques he's turned seduction into an effortless craft--even inventing his own vocabulary. His technique sounds like a car salesman's tip sheet: his main rule is FMAC--find, meet, attract, close. He employs the "three-second rule"--always approach a woman within three seconds of first seeing her in order to avoid getting shy. Other tricks: Intrigue a beautiful woman by pretending to be unaffected by her charm; also, never hit on a woman right away. Start with a disarming, innocent remark, like "Do you think magic spells work?" or "Oh my god, did you see those two girls fighting outside?" And finally, the most important characteristic of the pickup artist--smile.

After two years, Strauss ends up becoming almost as successful as Mystery, but he comes to an important realization. His techniques were actually off-putting to the woman he ended up falling in love with. And they never prepared him for actually having a relationship. I can't even begin to describe the serious flaws in this book... I'm too lazy to make a detailed critique...

But I gave it one star instead of zero because, if you want to study logic and how to detect subtly and not so subtly flawed arguments, buy this book.

There are serious flaws in their methodology [ie, apparently their tricks work for all kinds of girls, as long as you only hit on traditionally-cute looking barflies... And manipulative techniques are emphasized as the determining factor, yet their workshops also teach teach non-manipulative self-improvement techniques which may also have been a determining factor], and this book should have been renamed The Mysogynist's Training Manual, because they basically teach how to manipulate women into sleeping with them
(Also, it's hard not to get affected at least temporarily by their messed up views of women)

I sold this book a long time ago, but should have burned it instead.

This book is amazing. I read this book flat out in one day. I couldn't drop it, once you begin to read it you just won't let go. Its not as much of how to pick up a women as the title may suggest but it holds loads of information you can pick out and use. It proves that any average frustrated chump can become a pick up artist and pushes you to become something that you never dreamed possible.

I would recommend 'The Game' to anyone who fears women and wants to burn into his brain that IT CAN HAPPEN if you apply the knowledge you have been given.

I finally found time to get Neil's book, and must say it's one of the most fascinating stories I've read in ages, and it's all true. I had read some of the Seduction message board postings and found them to be misinformed to unrealistic. The Game changed my outlook completely. Without spoiling the story, this is a fascinating introspective into a successful man looking to grow out of his shell and completely change his personality, outlook, and self-awareness. The women are actually a footnote by the end. How he gets there is too interesting not to read. You should read Mystery's book after this, and also my personal favorite in the PUA category The Professional Bachelor Dating Guide - How to Exploit Her Inner Psycho, which is more intellectual, and witty. Great books.

This book was recommended to me by a colleague. It is actually used in premarriage counseling as well as couples therapy. I wish I'd read this earlier! A definite must have for understanding the two sides of relationships. I usually purchase a copy as a gift for close friends at bridal showers, etc. It is an easy read, and very helpful for old and new couples alike.

I found the book worthwhile to listen to. The author offered good practical advice to improving your relationship. I was disappointed that the last 1/5th of the program concentrated on the writings of Jesus. I do not believe that believing in a certain religion will help my relationship.

Gary Chapman's thesis is that everyone feels love in different ways, but these different ways can be generalized into five groups, the five love languages. They are acts of service, quality time, gifts, physical touch, and words of affirmation. After some introductory chapters (in which describes love as a choice more than an attraction), he describes each language in its own chapter. These chapters include a description of the language, a story of a troubled marriage turned around by a spouse starting to express love in the other's language, and suggestions for how to share in love in that language. Although most of the book addresses marital relationships, a later chapter extends the ideas to parenting.

Dr. Chapman's ideas are intuitive and believable. There are several unnecessary phrases he overuses (such as "love tank" for how loved someone feels), but otherwise the prose is clean and pleasant. The examples and suggestions do not always resonant, but some are helpful. Overall, his simple thesis gives rise to a thoughtful little book.

This is by far the most helpful book I've ever read on relationships. Chapman approaches relationships in a unique way that doesn't simply divide men and women into separate categories, but treats every person as a unique individual. Regardless of your gender, you give and understand love through one or more primary 'love language'. Certain of the following ways in which love is shown are most important to you.

Acts of Service
Physical Touch
Receiving Gifts

Problems arise when you and your significant other don't speak the same 'love language'. If you can learn to love your partner in the way that has the largest effect on them, they will feel more loved and hopefully reciprocate in kind. Chapman's theories have stood up to the test of time and demonstrated their effectiveness time and again in many people's lives (just look at all the 5-star reviews).

This relatively short book is written in a very engaging and easy-to-read style that will keep you entertained as well as seriously make you think about the ways you and your partner demonstrate your love. Whether you're in a rocky relationship that is in desperate need for help, or in an excellent one that you couldn't imagine going wrong, I think this book could help you. Whether you're married, dating (like me), single, Christian, atheist, straight, lesbian, or gay, I think this book could really influence the way you think about your relationships.

The book covers similar ground as 'She Comes First', which I also recommend. Michaels writes her book informally and conversationally.

The author's background as speech pathologist gives her a great deal of credibility - particularly when discussing the tongue. That's the strongest point. It's also a quick read. The weak point is that the book is good enough that it does not need the occasional sarcastic quips to support it. Sometimes it seemed that the authors were embarassed by the subject matter and felt the need to lighten it up. Understandable, but sometimes it smacked of too much effort. Drop some sarcasm and the book could be even better than it is. Even as is, it's still 4 stars. Let's see if it merits 5 big Os.

Please save your money and do not buy this drivel. Most of this book is a direct and harsh attack on feminists, and feminism in general. Guess what, Dr. Laura? It's 2007, not 1957. She has no practical or specific suggestions for improving a marriage, just general "smile and be pretty, open your legs and don't complain".

Dr Laura gives down to earth excellent recommendations. It is just that most of us are too selfish to follow them. My fiancee and I decided to be proactive and visit a psychologist before we had any relationship issues and before we got married. He recommended Gottman to us, and what a fabulous recommendation it was! Reading "Seven Principles" really illustrated with lucidity what it was about my parents' marriage that has always bothered me (contempt from my mother in their arguments) and gave clear steps on how to avoid this and other relationship killers. It was very reaffirming in that it doesn't tell couples not to fight (because how realistic is that?), but teaches them how to fight and how to agree to disagree. My fiancee is in the process of reading it now, and I'm excited for him to finish so we can talk it over. The last principle, in particular, is really great for people who already have solid relationships...it made me excited to get married!

A really excellent book overall, Gottman's writing style is clear and concise!

It is helpful because it is basic, layed out in a very simplistic manner, and is an easy reader. The book offers concrete instructions for couples on how to improve their closeness, connection, and communication. It is also based on scientific studies thereby offering value and effectiveness of the techniques illustrated in the book. great book that I had initially borrowed from my therapist. Was enlighteneing. Made me recognize a lot about myself and my spouse. I recommend it for newleyweds and other couples as well; I myself have been married for 10 years. It can be used preventitively or as a couselling guide or just to provide some insight into what you may be feeling or going through with a significant other. It made me realize my thoughts and actions were not "crazy" but rather common.

Just What I Needed.......2007-09-25

I got this book at a friend's recommendation. I'm getting married soon and I was hoping for some help. The book was very helpful and informative. I liked it for not being biased or a 10 step program. It's literally straightforward information on how most women think. It's already drastically altered the way I relate to my fiancée and it's helped us grow closer together. I'd recommend it to any man that wants a better relationship with his lady. This is a great book to help newlyweds get started out on the right foot.

Undserstanding a Woman.......2007-09-21

The Feldhahn's bring humor and wisdom into an amazingly complex topic - understanding a woman. While my wife certainly is mysterious to say the least, this book provided insights into why she says what she says, reacts the way she does to my words, and what I have done to build walls that she gave up trying to climb. I found that many of her problems could be influenced for the better by my willingness to understand her and speak to her on her terms. This book has helped me help my wife love me more fully. Humble yourself and read it!!

Great book on the inner lives of women. Read this with your significant other and it will bring you closer. It is written from a Christian perspective, but this is not overly apparent.

Perfect Wedding Book!.......2007-09-07

Ok, so I admit that I read some of my husband's book titled "For Men Only". It's his own fault for leaving it next to the toilet.

We received these as wedding gifts awhile back. I was really curious to see if what it said was true. I have to say that it actually provided some great insight into my own thoughts and feelings and legitimized my feelings for certain issues that have arisen in our relationship. I'd have to say that in my opinion this is a great book to help men understand the average woman. Men, if you've ever thought "That girl is ka-razy!", then this is the book for you!

I read For Women Only and then read For Men Only and I loved it. While For Women Only provided much insight, this book provided a much needed sense of freedom to be a woman. For a long time, I had assumed that much of my personality traits were not good, but it was b/c my traits were different than guys and were not understood by the guys in my life. In reading the book, I began to understand that I was not crazy just a woman :)

A MUST-HAVE!.......2007-09-19

There are not enough good things to say about this book. I have it in conjunction with Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood and contrary to some other reviewers, I love having them both together.

I can't recommend this parenting technique enough. I have a 2 year old boy and we started using love and logic principles just after his 2nd birthday. What a difference it made in us all!!! Just like the authors say - it puts the fun back in being a parent. We are always getting comments on his calm demeanor and our ability to always be patient.

If you or someone you know is struggling with a child, toddler to preteen, this book will change the family for the better. It gives you the exact things to say in all kinds of situations, in fact half to book is dedicated to doing just that. This book gives you the tools to restore peace, happiness, hope, order and fun back into your home. I'm so thankful for this book!

THE best parenting book ever.......2007-09-18

All my friend and I SWEAR by this book. This my not be the ONLY book you need, but it surely is one key book you MUST have. Extremely practical - there are actual cases and actual phrases to use, while explaining the philosophy behind the approach. This is the ultimate "how to" book on raising responsible, moral, kind children who understand cause and effect! It also takes the "you vs me" out of it and teaches children that their choices and actions have consequences. As a Christian, it sits well with me. It is especially excellent with defiant or contrary children, and children raise in foster homes or others who have attachment challenges.

Best parenting book my wife and I have found.......2007-09-03

This is an excellent book on parenting, the best my wife and I have found. The principles work very well - we wish we had found it earlier. We and our children are much happier after using this book.

This is very sound parenting. This book teaches you how to raise responsible children who think about the consequences of their actions. It teaches principles and gives you strategies to help your children anticipate the real consequences of their actions - a good thing to learn when you're still a child and "the price tag is still low."

This book is not the draconian book that some negative reviewers have interpretted it to be. The authors advocate genuine compassion for children who experience realistic consequences to their bad choices. It is true that the principles in this book likely require more work on the part of the parent than other approaches.

Regarding whether this book advocates corporal punishment - it does not. Page 221 from the 2006 edition:

"Spankings ... give kids a quick escape from the responsibility of living with a bad choice. Instead of having to live with consequences and think about solutions, youngsters have a brief moment of pain, and then they're off the hook."

"The original edition of this book advocateded the use of spanking in limited, controlled situations. However, as we have grown in our professions and as more valid research has become available, we have changed our postion. There are many good reasons to avoid the use of spankings...[list follows]."

Sick authors.......2007-08-30

Any author who presents themselves as wanting to help children and then advocates corporal punishment is a sociopath at worst or terribly misguided at best. They should never yield power over someone smaller or weaker than themselves. Maybe the authors need to be physically bullied (ex. spanked) by someone 100+ lbs bigger than them so they can feel what a child feels when some stupid or gullible adult follows their advice. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Parents and caregivers- please think long and hard before you hit the children who are depending on you for love and protection. There are much better ways of discipling children. Learn them.

I want my money back! .......2007-08-25

Cline and Fay offer some of the most egregious parenting advice I have ever seen. Their take on child-rearing is nothing short of passive aggressive.

In their chapter on "Fears and Monsters" they provide the following scenario:
CHILD: "I don't want to go to bed, Mom. I'm afraid I might die tonight."
MOM: "Thankfully, only one child in ten million will die in his sleep tonight, honey."

On "Allowances/Money" which the authors recommend starting at 5 or 6 they write:
"Jim's son, Charlie, learned a powerful lesson in money management the very first week he got on the allowance payroll. Their family visited a carnival, and the midway barkers had their way with the boy. He came home flat broke.

"Dad, what am I going to do for lunch?" Charlie said when reality struck him on Monday morning.
"Go over to your pay envelope and get your lunch money out," Jim replied.
"But it's all gone," Charlie said.
"Oh, no, that's too bad. What are you going to do?" he said.
"I don't know," Charlie said. "Can I get some food out of the refrigerator and make a lunch?"
"Sure, if you can afford to pay for it," Jim said. "Mom and I have already paid for lunches once, and we don't want to pay for them again."
p. 121

On "Pacifiers":
"In our lives, we have seen many ideas come and go: constant cigarette smoking in public places, collecting pet rocks, and the fad of birthing children into a pan of warm water. What do all these things have in common? Through the course of history, many normal human beings didn't engage in these behaviors. One might say that the behaviors simply aren't "normal" responses of the human race. Use of a pacifier in toddlerhood falls into this category." p. 203

And on preofessional help they say:
"If you have read this book--taking in the Love Logic philosophy and applying it consistently to your children--and still have big problems, then you need professional. p. 213.

Frankly, I'm willing to donate the $24.99 (plus shipping!) refund towards recovery groups for all the children who will be damaged by this book.

Best Book Ever!!!!.......2007-09-12

This book isn't so much about the mechanics of sex as the nature of love and desire in a monogamous relationship. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of great factual information about sex, but speaking as a woman, I have always been more curious about the deeper and more substantial mystery of love. This book really delves into that mystery and supplies a lot of expert relationship advice arising from the physical realities of the human body. For example, cuddling releases a hormone called oxcytocin in females and massage releases the hormone vassopressin in men. These hormones encourage feelings of closeness, fidelity and nesting in humans. Spending time massaging your guy actually helps build your relationship, and demanding that he spend time with his arm or leg over you will make you feel more appreciated. Even if you already knew this great little fact, you should still read this book because there are more of these cool tidbits and the book espouses a powerful new way for women to look at sex. Before I read this book, I was caught in a traditional outlook on female sexuality. I thought that sex just wasn't very fun for me and it wasn't really supposed to be fun for me. I had tried other books, but found that the "techniques" they suggested led to some embarrassing situations. I had asked my gynecologist if their was something wrong with me that made sex just no fun. I thought that porn was a necessary evil and didn't really understand why guys spend any time at all watching the stuff. After reading this book, I can truly say that I get why my guy seems to be the way he is. I have implemented some of the suggestions, and man alive, my sex life has been soooo much better. This is my first online review of a book and it is because I just had to come and gush about this book.

I got this book and "She Comes First" 15 days ago as my anniversary gift to my boyfriend and me. He has been too busy with work to read "She Comes First", so I started reading "He comes next." Just this book has been truly great for our relationship. The cover is very suggestive and one of the best parts of the book. While he is walking around the apartment, I will lounge on the chair reading. I have caught him staring at me a bunch. I know it turns him on to see me reading a book about how to turn him on. Further, the book is a page turner. I come home and the first thing I want to do is pick it up and read. I have to hold myself back to wait for my boyfriend to be around. Having read this book, I want to give it to my friend as a wedding present. This book is worth its weight in diamonds.

A great learning experience.......2007-08-17

I read She Comes First by the same author before I read this one which was just as educational for me as it is for a man. That being said, He Comes Next was quite a learning experience! While I am good at "it", there's always room for improvement in whatever you're doing and reading this book cemented that belief. It helped me understand how a man thinks and why and how he feels (not so different from us ladies) about sensitive issues. I expected the book to be primarily about learning to give a better oral sex like She Comes First is, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was much more to it than that. I did, however, appreciate the education I got about oral sex. I certainly hope to satisfy my partner better now-emotionally and physically.

I'd give this book a big O for outstanding. This book goes beyond just serving as a how-to on having great sex, but first and foremost provides a how-to on having a great relationship. (And, believe it or not, the two really are connected.) Continually entertaining, informative, and insightful from cover to cover, this book will likely suck (ok, puns are hard to avoid in writing this review) you in from the start and keep your attention throughout. As the author conveys throughout the book, the secret to having an exciting relationship in the bedroom is to first have an exciting one outside of it

I picked this book up on a whim and read it cover to cover without putting it down. The author truly "has a handle" on how to please a man. He is straightforward and provides easy to understand instruction. I would recommend this book to anyone. I was amazed at what I learned and just applying a few of the techniques in this book will maximize your and your partner's experience.

I decided to buy this book because I've always had problems reaching orgasm when my husband and I make love, and I was hopeful that there was something I hadn't tried. This book is great, especially for a woman who hadn't really tried the technique the author suggests. I guess I thought there was something wrong with it, or I hadn't thought of using manipulation and intercourse together. But the author makes a good case for the point of view of the book, and even though I am relatively inexperienced at masturbation, I decided to practice more as the author suggests. I would recommend this book as an augmentation to other sexual literature, depending on how experienced you are, whether you do or do not have difficulty reaching climax. It gives more detailed and complete explanations than many, somewhat more than your average "improve your relationship" type of books give. From talking to some of my other women friends, especially those who are not embarrassed to admit they still haven't gotten it "right," many of us could use this refresher course in making love.

I bought this book for a friend who has been having the kind of trouble with her sex life that I used to have - trouble reaching orgasm. It was never impossible for me; just difficult. From this book, I quickly learned the new approach (although nothing's really "new") and immediately tested it with my boyfriend. It worked, and he was impressed. The book is well-written and an easy read. The formula is described so that it is easy to do.

WOW! I give this book FOUR stars for the step by step instructions and a sense of humor to make it go down easier. I am 40 years old and sex has gotten to be so much trouble, my husband and I hardly ever do it anymore. I've always been able to masturbate to orgasm but couldn't achieve orgasm through intercourse. I learned there is nothing wrong with me and most women need direct or indirect clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm.

This book deserves FIVE stars for giving me more self confidence to experiment, and for giving me the courage to try using what I already knew in a new way. I'm a little more adventurous and more aware of what works and as a result of reading this book, I'm consistently reaching orgasm with my husband during sex and it doesn't take all night - which we are both too tired to handle anyway!!
