Useful but read the fine print.......2007-06-10
This reference is highly useful for consulting work. It has its limits. A true rule-of-thumb book for chemical engineers would require volumes so I would say the author did well, hence the 5 stars. A good example of the limits of this book are what he does with knock-out pots. He limits his presentation to reflux drums instead of expanding his study to KO pots in general. The section on reflux drums is difficult to use because the tables presented for liquid holding times is difficult to understand, let alone use. The reader would be tempted to use this method for KO pots unless he sees the fine print in the corner of the page. Look for these caveates.
The index is good, which is critical for such a reference. If I had a choice between buying Hicks or Branan, it would be a hard choice. I would probably advise the cheaper book, Branan. Besides, Hicks, "Standard Handbook of Engineering Calculations," covers a broad range of engineering calculations. Branan is more focused on chemical engineering. It is unfortunate that it is not expanded to cover more of the field.

Question about Units used (US and Metric?).......2006-09-19
Hi
I do not have a copy of the current edition, but a year ago I investigated purchasing a previous edition. What deterred me at the time was that all tips, tricks and equations etc. were in US units and thus only of very limited appeal to the Metric world.
A question to a reviewer of the 4th edition - has the book become "international", i.e. quoting metric and US units? If not, it shall remain of limited desirability in the free world.

From an Industrial Practitioner - This is an Excellent Quick Reference.......2006-07-11
This book is an excellent and priceless reference on Process Equipment Fundamentals and Quick Calculations for any engineer or practitioner working in the process industries. I am an Electronic Engineer, but I have been working for the last 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry. As a result I have been involved with Chemical Engineering issues in a day to day basic.
I have found this book to be an excellent tool aid to analyze operational problems that affect process performance.
Chemical engineers working in operations and design for the process industries will find this book most useful.
A MUST HAVE books for Chemical Engineers.......2000-10-08
This is one of the few MUST HAVE books for Chemical Engineers doing process engineering. When I travel (for work) I always take "Transport Phenomena" (aka BSL), The GPA Databook and "Rules of Thumb for Chemical Engineers". Rules of Thumb... is a great reference for process design and trouble shooting field problems.
A Practical Tip: The best thing to do with "Rules of Thumb for Chemical Engineers" is to carefuly remove the binding and put it into a 3-hole notebook (e.g., the GPA databook) and then file all the classic process design articles with the appropriate chapters.
Outstanding compilation.......2000-06-08
This is a 400+ page perfect-bound book, 8-1/2 x 11 inch formt, packed with tips and short cuts for practicing chemical engineers. Branan has essentially scoured the popular press (e.g, Chemical Engineering Magazine, Hydrocarbon Processing, etc.) for articles and data. He's captured that data and organized it into his volume. In so doing, he omits most of the explanatory text and derivations. Instead, he prints the actual data, formulas, recommendations, and definitions (and, of course, references to the source material). This makes for a highly accessible book with tremendous practical value.
There are four main sections: 1) equipment design, 2) process design, 3) plant design, and 4) operations.
For example, one of the chapters within plant design is called "Safety." It contains the following parts: - Estimating LEL and Flash (provides method for estimating LEL given the stoichiometry of combustion and a vapor pressure curve) - Tank Blanketing (method for determining inert gas requirements for breathing losses and working losses; includes data maps of the US) - Equipment Purging (for dilution, pressure-cycle, and vacuum-cycle purging) - Static Charge from Fluid Flow (reprint of an article from Hydrocarbon Processing) - Mixture Flammability (method and examples for estimating) - Relief Manifolds (describes method adopted by API)
In short, if you are practicing process engineering for plant design or maintenance, you should have this book.

Good scientists learn early on not to do everything by the book. Respected statistician Gerald Van Belle has compiled the unpublished wisdom of his profession in the invaluable Statistical Rules of Thumb. Those mathematicians involved in statistical work will applaud its clarity and organization, while other scientists will find their experimental design and analysis vastly improved by its suggestions. Each of the 99 rules has a brief introduction, a simple statement of the rule, illustrations, theoretical underpinnings, and extensions. Topics covered include covariation, design, consultation, epidemiology, and data representation. Van Belle is providing Web support for this ongoing project, so we can expect to see even greater breadth and refinement as it develops. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Statistics-in one handy reference
Not even the most brilliant statistician can instantly recall every rule and concept that forms the daily bread of statistical work. For every practitioner and student without a photographic memory, here is an eminently practical, easy-to-use, concise sourcebook that puts a broad range of topics instantly at your fingertips.
Sensibly organized for quick reference, Statistical Rules of Thumb compiles simple rules that are widely applicable, robust, and elegant, and that capture key statistical concepts. It provides a framework for considering such aspects of statistical work as:
- Randomness and statistical models
- Sample size
- Covariation
- Epidemiology
- Environmental studies
- Designing, conducting, and analyzing studies
- Words, tables, and graphs
- Consulting
Handy and reliable, this all-in-one reference should be the trusted companion of every statistician.
Customer Reviews:
Great value.......2007-08-09
A very welcome book. Packed full of useful information in a very readable form. I ordered it for the one and half page about "Overlapping confidence intervals do not imply nonsignificance". Have been overjoyed discovering the rest.
Extremely helpful and very readible.......2007-02-26
Sometimes you don't want to see a lot of "scary math notation" -- you just want to know what a concept is and how to apply it. This book meets that desire. It takes all the theoretical math concepts and explains them in very readable and accessible language so that you won't have post-traumatic flashbacks to your college statistics days.
This book provides concrete and practical advice on how to use statistical methods and how to make sure that you are using them correctly. The very first chapter (which you can read online) talks about sample size and provides simple and equations to use to design an experiment that will give you statistically valid results. That chapter is worth the purchase price itself.
Between the quality of the information, and the ease of reading, this book has got to be one of the best books out there for those who shudder at the mere mention of statistics.
Practical advice.......2003-02-13
This is a useful book for the working statistician or consultant. Many questions arise in practice that are never covered in traditional textbooks, and with experience an applied statistician learns "rules of thumb". Here is a text that nicely organizes some of the most common questions and problems and design considerations, with solid practical advice. This is not a text for a course (unless a course in consulting), but would serve an applied researcher or statistician well.
Excellent Book - though not for the uninitiated.......2003-01-09
Excellent reference for statisticians. Only two complaints:
1) In many instances, wording is not clear - you have to really pick sentences apart to figure out what the author meant.
2) Reasons for a particular rule sometimes leave you wanting. But at least you're introduced to the concept and can look elsewhere for assistance in understanding.
Also, the title might lead some non-statisticans to think that they can pick this book up and learn how to plug and chug in all sorts of situations. This is not the case.
Superb!.......2002-09-28
What a great idea. Rather than write a comprehensive text, Dr. VanBelle writes about a large number of statistical topics, focussing on areas that are confusing, or frequently misunderstood. Some of his "rules of thumbs" are approximate formulae for doing quick (but approximate) analyses. Most are more general advice, based on decades of consulting. Topics range from designing studies to making graphs, but most are about data analysis. Something for everyone in a well-written book.
Book Description
The architect's favorite handbook-more informative and easier to use than ever!
The Architect's Studio Companion is the laborsaving design resource that architects and builders have relied on for years. Now in its fourth edition, this industry standard continues its reputation as a reliable tool for the preliminary selecting, configuring, and sizing of the structural, mechanical, and egress systems of a building. Bestselling authors Edward Allen and Joseph Iano reduce complex engineering and building code information to simple approximations that enable the designer to lay out the fundamental systems of a building in a matter of minutes and get on with the design.
Now in a flex binding that makes it even easier to use, The Architect's Studio Companion, Fourth Edition provides quick access to reliable rules of thumb that offer vital help for selecting, configuring, and sizing:
* Structural systems
* Heating, cooling, and electrical systems
* Egress provisions, including exit stairways, parking garages, and parking lots
* Daylight provisions
The book concludes with precalculated tables of building code height and area limitations.
Customer Reviews:
A Tool to Speed Preliminary.......2007-02-16
This book is designed to help architects in their design of new buildings. Spedifically, the book is organized about the common building codes in place around the United States. The intent of the book is to minimize the time that an architect need spend on checking building codes themselves so that he can proceed to working on the design of the building.
The book establishes a simple system of seven steps to help the architect in his initial design effort.
The first step is to determine the Building Code and occupancy, then check as to what types of construction are permitted by the code, move on to a preliminary structural design, consider using daylighting, plan for mechanical and electrical systems, determine building code requirements for egress and accessibility, and finally parking.
By having all this informaion at your fingertips a great deal of time can be saved.
Customer Reviews:
It has great information.......2007-09-27
The handbook provides great information for any drafting classes and more information that you can use out in the field of Design
Great if you want to learn to do a budget and so on........2007-02-09
You ca learn a lot from this book I'm a interior design student and this book it's been very helpful.
Book Description
Between these covers is the essence of centuries of seafaring experience, distilled into a concise, alphabetically organized reference for sailors and powerboaters. You'll find rules of thumb for hull thickness, bottom paint coverage, estimating distances, when to hoist and lower flags, predicting weather, which colors are unlucky, rope size and strength, anchoring rights, making a rum punch, and a lot more. This is either the most useful boating book ever designed to entertain or the most entertaining book ever designed to be useful. Open it to any page and browse awhile. You'll see.
Customer Reviews:
Great book to keep by the head!.......2007-06-08
This is a great book for new sailors and old.... Keep it by the head and you will enrich you sailing and "sitting" experience (or "s_itting " experience, ha, ha)...Full of great items from the highly technical to the ethereal--all concerning our common lust for the sea! Great gift for the sailor who has nothing or everything! It has a wealth of usefull information.
Bluewater sailor.......2007-04-13
Great book. Interesting and very funy. When you sail for a while you notice that things like the "black Box" described in the book are true. Very good advises...good companion if you planning bluewater sailing.
For the Novice Boater.......2007-04-12
This reference guide is perfect for the novice boater just learning the ropes. It's organized alphabetically to make finding topics easy.
Good for the novice.......2007-01-12
We enjoyed reading this book, but it wasn't what we had hoped. It is a better learning tool for the novice. The entries to the book are written in a alphabetical format. For example, entries about 'sails' are under S. We hoped it would be more of a non-fiction story form where one sailer's knowledge can help other sailers undergo new adventures. You'll read it once and then leave it on the shelf.
Must have for boaters........2007-01-09
This is a great little reference guide for all boaters. You can get an answer to almost any boating question.

Book Description
Essential Manners for Men helps men make the right decisions about what to do and say in every situation that counts. Peter Post, great-grandson of Emily Post, distills the essential information men need for all the important roles they play in life.
Organized into three parts -- "Daily Life," "Social Life," and "On the Job" -- Essential Manners for Men resolves situations that can stump even the savviest. Peter Post's advice is sharp-witted and sensible, with tips, boxes, and candid anecdotes about his own etiquette blunders. Topics include:
- The most important behaviors to avoid and emulate at the gym, at work, on the golf course, at home, out with friends, at a business social event, and a child's ball game
- Tipping, driver's "ed-iquette," introductions, sportsmanship, and parenting
- Successfully sharing living spaces with a roommate, significant other, or spouse -- from the toilet seat to the remote control to the kitchen sink
- How to throw a great party or be the perfect guest
- How to successfully navigate the business dinner
- Things men do wrong that make women wince, and things men do right that women love
- The five-step process to resolve any situation where there is no etiquette "rule"
Short and shoot-from-the-hip honest, Essential Manners for Men is a book no man can afford to be without.

Bought for nerdy cousin. cant say it helped him much. he seemed to enjoy though.
okay, but not essential.......2006-12-11
This book is okay. There are a few good pointers in here; if you happen to get a copy it's worth holding onto. Some of the things the author writes about, though (helping around the house, helping with the kids, wedding invitations, etc.), will probably strike most guys as common sense. That said, if you're a 20-something guy who hasn't realized that women don't appreciate it when you stare at their breasts, then this might just be the book for you.
Good but short and not Great.......2006-08-18
Covers several items but is somewhat limited.
Felt like it was more for a butler than a regular man.
However, it did have some good material and I did get good information from reading it.
An enjoyable read that covers the basics.......2006-05-21
I bought this book hoping to be both entertained and instructed about how traditional gentlemanly ways should be applied or adapted to our times. In many respects, Essential Manners for Men did not disappoint; the author's impressive credentials are indeed sufficient to make one listen and take notes about everything etiquette.
The work is divided into three sections that include most situations in which a man will find himself--Everyday Life, Social Life and On the Job--making the book quite complete in terms of topics covered. And refreshingly, the author defines etiquette at the start of the book--as behavior containing the three ingredients of Consideration, Respect and Honesty. This definition is used as a prism to analyze the behaviors covered by the book, an approach that makes the advice consistent and easy to remember.
Each of the three major sections of the book are sub-divided into chapters covering more specific situations in which a man may face the forked path of right and wrong behavior--such as in the car, in the gym, on the phone, on a date, at the dinner-table, in an interview or at his office-desk. Besides the aforementioned Consideration, Respect and Honesty, Post covers each situation in light of two things: commonsense (which is not as common as many think) and what others, especially women, may find offensive, annoying or plain boorish. In support of his ideas, Post includes the results of many surveys showing such things as "what women find most annoying in a man," which are undoubtedly valuable tidbits for us chaps.
In general, the result is a collection of solid, basic advice on how not to impress others negatively. And basic though it may be, I defy any of us guys reading this to be able to check off every "do" as something we always remember to do--from leaving the toilet-seat down to stoically keeping our eyes on the "time elapsed" display while a modern Venus De Milo graces the StairMaster in front of ours.
This book may be especially valuable for guys on the younger side who are just starting out on the social scene and who may need a reminder that yes, their parents actually knew what they were talking about when they said that hogging the remote control would make a bad impression on your guests.
On the downside, I found some of the reading to be a little humorless and occasionally trite. I was hoping to hear Jeeves, half-smiledly guiding me through the timeless Ganymede club of gentlemanly behavior; but I sometimes got a stereotypical lecturing dad, a moralizing minister or a dry statistician telling me what polls say I should or should not do. Then, some of the advice was overstated. Yes, failing to leave the toilet-seat down is not terribly good manners; it will however not make or break your marriage--and if it does perhaps that says more about your partner than you.
But perhaps this point of criticism is a tad unfair, since the book actually delivers exactly what it promises. It is, after all, entitled "ESSENTIAL Manners for Men." As such, I think it should belong on the shelves of most of us guys, and it should be re-read from time to time. However, there are other books that make for a more interesting read and treat the subject from a more artistic/philosophical angle--such as the delightfully old-fashioned work by Willy Farnese "The True Gentleman," which (alas) is no longer in print.
Misleading title; and book contains more obvious than helpful information.......2006-02-20
This book is probably not helpful to anyone seeking more than VERY basic social skills. I did not find anything particularly informative. The writing is long-winded, is generally an midly annoying, boring lecturing style. At many points, it actually seemed as if the author was not a man, but rather, someone's wife carrying on about the commonplace, stale female gripes and frustrations about how filthy are their men. Where's the male backbone? Not here. The male author seemed to cowtow to the female of the house; it actually looks like he mirrored the concerns of various women consulted and then determined that essential manners require full male compliance.
Also, the title of the book seems misleading due to the very obvious matters discussed. I thought this book would build an intermediate or advanced level of male manners, but most of the information is irrelevant or too basic to be helpful.
Sorry for the negative report; it was a let-down, but then again I only paid $5 for it.

Customer Reviews:
fabulous book!.......2007-07-12
I only wish I had known about this book six months earlier! We're attempting to build a period-inspired colonial house. I was so dissatisfied with the house plans I saw that I decided to just design the house myself using library books and determination. I wanted to build something beautiful and the "anti-McMansion". If only I had had this book earlier we would've done so many things differently: my second floor windows would've been shorter to accommodate all the stuff that's supposed to be under the eaves but now won't fit. I would've put the little stoop in a different spot. My dormers would have different proportions. The only problem with reading this book is that now when I look at our house I see all the things I did wrong.
Invaluable Resource.......2007-05-22
I am not an architect, but I am a city planner and frequently work with architects and draft zoning codes which govern architecture. To me, this book is worth the money simply for the "lexicon" at the beginning which describes and illustrates the key elements of traditional building construction. No other book I have used provides these descriptions in such a readily understandable way.
Most of the book consists of a listing of "do's" and "don'ts," illustrated with photos and small drawings, that explain how each of the details should be used and work together to form a composition. I agree with one of the earlier reviewers that some of the photos are hard to read, but for the most part, it works. You may or may not share the author's strong opinions--a lot of people seem to prefer McMansions to the simpler forms of traditional architecture--but regardless of your aesthetic judgements, this book will teach you like no other how the design details come together to determine the overall look and feel of the building.
Excellent Resource.......2007-04-05
I am using this book to assist in the detailing of my house, which we are renovating right now. I lent it to my architect and he says it is a great resource and time saver. He will be buying himself a copy. This book provides many examples of what to do and what not to do and will allow you to focus in on those details that make homes look "just not right" and correct them before costly mistakes are made.
Mediocre Architecture Explained .......2007-01-09
Modernism has been the dominant language of architectural schools since the late 1930's. Modernism has never caught on with most of the people who commission architects to design buildigns. They want more traditional buildings that are grounded in America's architectural history. Unfortunately, most architects were not taught to design traditional buildings. As a consequence, America's suburbs are brimming with grotesque Tudors, misshaped bungalows and ackward colonial revival homes.
In this volume, Stephen Mouzon assembles a thousand photographs of architectural details. By concentrating on specific building details, he gives examples of designs that are done correctly and others that are completely fouled up. At times, it is humorous and even a bit tragic to see just how illiterate an architect can be.
I am not an architect. My hobby is to look at architecture. When I come across real train wrecks, it is easy for me to understand why they do not work. However, I often come across buildings that don't work and I have problems putting my finger on what is wrong. This volume is a field guide to all that can go wrong.
Stephen Mouzon's target audience is architects. I would hope that any architect contemplating designing a traditional building will purchase this book. A little bit of study can help spare this country further examples of embarassing architecture. I only wish this book had been written sixty years ago.
A Must Have Book.......2006-09-25
Excellent Book.... Format and details are outstanding. It shows examples of what to do and what not to do.
I have bought additional copies for others.

pilot's rules of thumb, easy aviation formulas.......2007-09-21
The book does contain many of the generalized ways of quickly working some of the problems confronted by an aviator. I was disappointed in the quality of print and paper.
waste of money.......2007-07-31
Not as advertized. No index so you waste time fishing for the info. If you remember square root in your head or tanget angles then this is help full. lots of useless information. only 49 pages at 3.5 by 5.5 inches.
Love this book!.......2007-06-09
I am planning on attending ATP school next year and I find this book to be very informative when I am studying or using the flight simulator. I have used it extensively. needs to have a sturdier binding!
Flys where I Fly.......2007-04-08
This and the Pilot's Pocket Handbook stay in my flight bag. Can you figure headwind and crosswind components in your head? This books shows you how to do it to the first decimal place, along with a ton of other need to know (save your behind) and cool to know "rules of thumb." Great gift for pilots at all stages of general aviation.
Perfect reference for that quick look see........2007-03-14
I am finding out how much I forgot as I glance through this volume.

Excellent Reference Book.......2007-07-09
Excellent Reference Manual. This will stay on my bookshelf for easy referencing at all times.
An awesome resource for publishers and booksellers.......2005-04-14
This is an amazing resource for ideas. It should be on every bookseller's bookshelf. I keep it handy for when I am hungry for creative ideas.
Like all of Nat Bodian's books, it's top quality and full of great information, packed with 59 chapters in 400 pages. While it is pre-Internet, you will be hard-pressed to find a more thorough treatment of the direct marketing topic.
This book is in the same league with John Kremer's "Book Marketing Made Easier" (bookmarket.com) and E Haldeman-Julius's "First Hundred Million" (100millionbooks.net). Both are PACKED with ideas, the latter also packed with proven sales numbers for what titles did and did not sell. Both are also out of print unfortunately. Kremer's book can be picked up used and is well worth the money. The other is available in digital format but is largely unavailable except for hundreds of dollars, if you can find it.
If you have a chance to pick up any of Bodian's books, do it! I love them.

Customer Reviews:
Succinct and valuable book.......2007-05-30
I'd recommend this book for anyone ranging from students to the working class. Am currently a student and was very pleasantly surprised to find valuable nuggets of information inside the book. Covers thermodynamics, fluid, vibration, heat transfer and probably just about anything a mechanical engineer/engineering student wants to know about.
A quick reference to solve everyday problems in Mechanical Engineering.......2006-07-12
Practical solutions for mechanical engineers should have been the title of this book. The book is full of fundamental information, principles, quick calculations methods, illustrations, and diagrams, that will save the industrial practitioner valuable time.
If you travel for work always take this handy reference with you. I believe this book will also be useful for the student of Mechanical Engineering.
I own this book, as well as Carl. Branan "Rules of Thumb for Chemical Engineers". If you work in the process industries, these two books will proof to be an invaluable aid to analyze and solve operational problems that affect process equipment performance.
