a must have for the forver messie.......2007-05-22
Sandra Felton is my hero! I was thrilled to see that I could order her books through amazon rather than having to go through paypal on the messies anonymous website. Although I receive her daily emails, this book goes into more detail about the personality of a messie and why we have a difficult time doing things that come so naturally to "cleanies". It also explains methods that make sense and help me to see how to get something accomplished without sacrificing the rest of my life. After reading several other books on organizing (which suggested Sandra's website in the first place), I feel this is finally the one that will help me truly reach my goal of an organized home. You will not regret making this purchase.
Recovering Messie.......2006-08-29
I just finished reading this book on a trip to Chicago. I liked that Sandra explains why we are messies. I couldn't wait to get home to utilize her strategies. I'm now on day 2 and I think I'll have my house orgainzed by day 9 or 10.
I loved this book and I AM organized!.......2006-05-08
I love being organized - it makes my life so much simpler. But, I raised a "Messie." In fact, long before Sandra Felton wrote "The Messies Manual," I had dubbed my daughter "Messie Jessie."
So, why did I buy this book? I bought 3 copies for: my daughter, and my 2 stepsons - all of whom are in their early 20's. My daughter wasn't reading hers, so I asked to borrow it because I know I don't "know it all" and I am always happy to learn more, new & different, or better!
That's the bottom line - I learned more, new & different, and better ways of organizing! As a bonus, I learned how to help my ADHD husband while saving my own sanity in the meantime.
I want to read ALL of Sandra Felton's books! I love her easy style of writing, her humor, and her interjections of faith along the way.

Quiet Wisdom.......2004-06-26
I have only read the first of two books in this volume, but I am impressed with the combination of quiet wisdom dispensed in a plain-writing style. The style may not resonate with a woman who wants to be flattered as hard-charging or not to be confused with a housewife; I think the book is a small gem. Benjamin Franklin, another pragmatist not without humor, would have understood its tone. (BTW, I am a 59 year-old bachelor.) At her best, Felton offers compassion to those who have been intimidated into fear of making any decision or any move, counsels against compensating by inflating simple jobs into big plans that are never executed, and gently shows how to break things down into managable size. She offers useful and humorous warnings against "another good idea that doesn't work." As an older book, the book shows no awareness of how Felton's tools could fit into a small electronic PDA, but a reader who prefers a PDA to paper can figure that out.
Bogus and disappointing..........2004-06-13
As an apparently "messie" college student, I received this book from my mother after years of hearing her complain about how messy I am. I was actually eager to spend some time flipping through it (I first saw it on the bargain rack at Barnes and Noble...I wonder why), but once I did, I was largely disappointed. This book is written expressly for the 1980's housewife, with its humor and voice only directly relevant for this group. In the first part of the collection, Felton tries to pigeonhole messy people (seeing the word "messie" feels like hearing nails on a chalkboard for me) into profiled categories (i.e. "The Clean Messie") and spends the rest of the book throwing out bogus and unfounded advice based on her misperceptions of the psychology of messy people. The second part of the collection is just as much of a mess itself, with more of Felton's bogus advice as a "former messie". "Messies Anonymous"? "The Mount Vernon Method?" Oh please. If you want to become more organized in this day and age (rather than 20 years ago), this isn't the book for you.
It Will Change Your Life!!.......2003-11-17
I never thought of myself as a "Messie", I just thought I was just behind on a few things! Sandra Felton in her wonderful writing style makes you want to sing out loud and expect more from yourself and your home. This book is not for you if you want to learn how to clean but it is for you if you want to organize your home and life. Her system on organizing your cleaning and day to day life are quick painless and ultimately change your messie ways forever!
Not very good.......2002-12-17
Why do people who write these kinds of books have to keep mentioning God every five minutes (Yes I do believe in God)but when I want to hear about God I will read my bible.
Borrow it from a friend but don't buy it
desperately seeking cleanliness.......2002-10-31
I am a Messie. But... I bought this book in preparation for the purchase of my first home, and actually managed to finish the first section before moving! I never got around to the second half, but what I did read really helped me let go of the need to do it all at once - granted moving to a bigger place helped a lot, but I wouldn't have been able to get rid of so much junk and organize the rest had I not had the tools I gained from reading this book. Best of all, I've been able to KEEP relatively organized :)

More like Adventurous!.......2005-04-26
This book is my kids' favorite! Everything is either very LARGE and exciting, or SILLY and exciting, or ADVENTUROUS and exciting, or extremely INTERESTING and exciting. Don't buy this if you want your child to sit in a corner with crayons for the rest of her/his life and never look beyond the expected. This is for the kids that will challenge their imaginations and explore art from a new view, building who they will be as adults.
OUTRAGEOUSLY FUN FOR KIDS.......2000-06-19

Success with all ages!.......2000-06-13
I used the stained glass project from the book with a group of 21 children, ranging in age from 4 to 12. The instructions were super-easy to explain to my group, and it was a real pleasure to see all the kids working so independently! At the end of the hour, each child had a great looking project and a sense of accomplishment! Ms. Kohl has another winner!

recipes from this book are still family favorites... 20 years later.......2007-04-26
i bought this book 20 years ago when i was a little kid. i remember begging my mom for it b/c i thought it was cool b/c it came with measuring spoons... something my family didn't own and i wanted badly (i loved to cook when i was little, still do!). i remember reading it constantly, mesmerized by the recipes and whining and pleading with my mom and dad to help me make some of them and loving the illustrations. i still remember the one of the boy throwing the noodle at the fridge to see if it was done. i did that and got in trouble...
we tried almost every recipe, the play-dough being a favorite. 20 years later, my mom still makes "Ready Spaghetti" (spaghetti cooked in meat sauce, kinda like American Chop-Suey) and it's one of my favorite comfort meals. it's been modified to use jarred sauce and we add peas, mushrooms, and spinach to make it heartier. i also still make the tuna salad (but w/o the ice cream cones) and the Disgustingly Rich Brownies is my signature brownie recipe and i still remember me and my older brother begging my mom to let us make them!
the book is still around. it's missing it's cover, but it's still in good condition. a must for any kitchen!
oh, and we still use the measuring spoons and they're in mint condition (and have been through innumerable trips through the dishwasher)
Excellent book!.......2006-10-31
Great recipes, easy language. My son and I enjoy cooking this recipes! The best book to introduce your children to the wonderful world of cooking!
Childhood Classic.......2006-10-26
My dad bought me this book when I was 8, and from the first recipe I was hooked. Between my brother an me, our family enjoyed most of the recipes in the book at least once, and I loved the sense of accomplishment from making my own meals. The book is extremely well-made and sturdy. I'm now 25 and the book is still in good condition. Recipes are easy to follow, fun to make, and surprisingly rather delicious. Though I no longer use it, I'll definiftely be giving it to my kids.
Great kids' cookbook.......2006-08-23
My son received this cook book when he was five and has enjoyed making the recipes. Of all of the kids' cookbooks we have, this is the most kid-friendly. Simple, step-by-step instructions with drawings to show them exactly how to do it. And, it is great at stating when an adult helper needs to be involved. The recipes are easy enough for 5-7 year olds (or 41 year olds!) and gives a great sense of accomplishment when finished. Although not a lot of variety (3-4 recipes per section), it's got enough to warrant the purchase.
A Keeper.......2006-08-03
Like many of the other reviewers, I received this book as a gift when I was about 8 years old. I am now 25, and I still make those chocolate chip cookies! I, too, have tweaked the recipe a bit in terms of varieties of chocolate, etc, but the basic recipe is still "Darrell's." I may have worked my way up to Pierre Herme and Francois Payard, but this book started it all and stands the test of time!

Just the Ticket for this lifelong Messie!.......2006-01-13
Like others, I had also passed by this book based on its title. But recently, I gave it a quick look through and could see right off the bat that the title didn't do fair justice to the solid help within. For me, the chapters on "why" were definately not a waste. In fact, they're what kept me reading. Now I believe that ADD is probably over-diagnosed in today's American society. Be that as it may, I have dealt with the effects of it my entire life and, while being reasonable successful, I have had to develop numerous "work arounds" in order to function at the required level in my profession; work arounds that my non-ADD colleagues probably find strange. But one area that has always escaped me is in keeping my personal space organized whether at home or at the office. Sandra's book didn't convince me that I had ADD - I already knew that. But it helped me understand how that relates to my disorganization. In that, her book hit the spot for me. So while I agree that this book may not be for everyone, please don't discount it due to its title or what others have said about the "whys" in the first portion of the book. Depending on your personal situation, that may be the portion you value the most!
Living with too much clutter? Want the relief of a clutter-free life? .......2005-09-23
A great de-cluttering book! I am so glad that I found it. It has really helped me change my approach to organizing and housecleaning.
What makes this book different from all the other organizing books? This one was written by a "recovering Messie", so she understands the situation. Therefore, the tips are more workable for people who tend to clutter. That makes all the difference! This book is easy to read, good-humored, and she gives you specific, easy-to-understand suggestions for getting the clutter under control.
Sandra Felton's book helps those who can use some help in getting out from under a pile of clutter, and she does it with good humor and without a hint of judgmentalism.
If you are a clutterer, get this book and follow the simple steps. You will be glad that you did.
ALL MESSIES NEED TO BUY SANDRA FELTON'S BOOKS .......2005-03-29
I have been one of the worst messies. This book and her other books (I have them all)have helped me to get on track and I am well on my way to being very organized and a whole lot less messy. I would highly recommend all of Sandra Felton's books. If you need help, it's bound to be the answer to your prayers.
If I Had Only Known.......2005-01-25
I passed this book up on several occassions due to the "messies" title....sounded so juvenile. If I had only known what good it would do me to read it!!!! The previous reviewer hit the nail on the head when she said that this book works because the author is a reformed messie herself - her thought processes were exactly the same as mine!!! I felt I'd found a soul sister! She "got it". She understood my confusion and sometimes flat-out inability to complete my housework. I was a stay-home mom for seven years and got absolutely nothing accomplished in the way of housekeeping. Even though I had the whole day, my house was never "put together". How I wish I had read this book way back then!!! Thank you Mrs. Felton for such a well written and insightful book. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone with trouble getting it together in their home. Even if you think the term "Messie" is a little juvenile.
Simple Solutions for My Chronic Disorganization.......2004-03-08
I highly recommend this book for people who are chronically "messy" homemakers. I have to admit that the book did discuss too much of the "whys" of messiness, but if you can get past the first part of the book, you will be surprised that the second half of the book provides just as much of the "hows". I have read quite a few de-cluttering and organizational books, which have been very helpful, but this one has helped in a way that none of the others have been able to. I have been struggling with a messy house for the last 13 years, and after 3 months, my home is organized! I've tried lists and time schedules and they just don't work for me. However, the "flipper" idea in the book works like a charm! It helped me from getting overwhelmed by distributing small jobs over a period of a month. Cooking and grocery lists are much simpler now also. If you are sick of having a home that you are embarrassed to show your guests, read this book!

Life-changing book!.......2006-09-01
If you're a messie like me, watch out! This book could change your life!!! I picked up a used copy this summer, and as I applied what I learned, my husband immediately noticed the difference. I feel like my eyes have been opened to a new world that I thought would never be open to me. My boys (both preschoolers) are now helping me keep the house clean, and they appreciate the difference, too. Thank you, Sandra Felton!!!
Help for us Helpless .......2005-12-12
This is the best, most encouraging home care book I've ever read! And her sense of humor is wonderful! I've owned 3 copies, but I've given them all away. Every "non-Martha Stewart" should own this book!
Skip the updated 2000 version... this is the one to get!.......2005-09-08
I got this book back in the late '80s and it helped. Mrs. Felton doesn't do the pop psychologizing in this edition that she does in the updated-new-wow 2000 edition. There's a quiz to assess what "type (or types) of Messie" you are so problem areas can be addressed in a more, erm, organized fashion, plus anecdotes about how Cleanies manage it. Mount Vernonizing has helped me figure out where to start many times.
A Review.......2005-07-07
Sandra Felton wrote The Messies Manual: The Procrastinator's Guide to Good Housekeeping to reach out and help a group of people hiding a secret shame behind their front door - their messy house.
Felton calls these people Messies, and she herself is a reformed Messie who knows only too well what it feels like to be overwhelmed by the state of your house.
She identifies different types of Messies, and also describes a few Cleanies (for those of us unfamiliar with the concept.) Some of the reasons for Messies being messy (poor memory, distractability, disorganized thinking, visual tune-out, and slow movement) are explained, along with attitudes Messies may be adopting that will hinder their progress. There is some very useful information on how to set goals for your housekeeping.
Sandra Felton's method for taking control of your house is called the Mount Vernon method, named after the cleaning method used at George Washington's estate. Basically, this involves starting at the front door of your house and moving in a clockwise direction around the room, organizing the first piece of furniture you come to. After you have finished with that piece, you move on to the next piece, and so on.
Sandra also has suggestions for tools for organizing the information in your life, and specific recommendations for closets and the kitchen. There are tips for saving time and getting your family to co-operate.
What makes this book different from other organizing books is that Sandra Felton has great insight into the lives of the chronically disorganized. This is not a book written for those who want to have Martha Stewart over for a visit - it is for those who would like to be able to let their family and friends inside the house. If you follow the advice in this book, you will no longer fear the knock at the door, but instead be able to welcome people into your house!
The tone of this book is wise and compassionate. Sandra Felton writes very well, communicating her ideas with clarity and good humor. The Messies Manual is a very practical, useful book.
This is the book I used for support when I cleaned up my house and I highly recommend it.--Pigpen
Awesome Book.......2003-12-13
I have read quite a few house cleaning books and this was definitely the best.
Great application and gave you a lot of helpful pointers to cleaning your house.
I am passing this book along to family and friends!!!!!
