Book Description

That stammer. Those basset-hound eyes. That bone-dry wit. There has never been another comedian like Bob Newhart. His comedy albums, movies, and two hit television series have made him a national treasure and placed him firmly in the pantheon of comedy legends. Who else has a drinking game named after him? And now, at last, Newhart puts his brilliant and hysterical world view on paper. Never a punch-line comic, always more of a storyteller, he tells anecdotes from throughout his life and career, including his beginnings as an accountant and the groundbreaking success of his comedy albums and The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart, which gave him fifteen years on primetime television. And he also gives his wry, comedic twist to a multitude of topics, including golf, drinking, and family holidays. Today, Newhart appears on Desperate Housewives, in hit movies such as Elf, and in theaters around the country. Reruns of his shows air constantly on Nick at Nite -- have recently been released with great success for the first time ever on DVD. With this book, Bob Newhart gives his millions of fans a first ever opportunity to sample his unique brand of humor -- including excerpts from some of his classic routines -- on the printed page.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining book.......2007-09-25

A quick read. Very entertaining. I had listened to the CD and wanted to read it. Thoroughly enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Very funny read.......2007-09-23

This was a very funny read from Bob Newhart. He tells the story of his
life in short interludes which put together a picture of a man at peace with himself and the world. His humor has always made me laugh, some-
times loudly and this book did the same thing.

4 out of 5 stars I shouldn't Even be Doing This.......2007-09-19

Not a rib splitter. But a good, relaxing read. Lots of fun stories about Newhart and his celebrety friends. If you like Newhart's sense of humor, you will like this book.

3 out of 5 stars Okay read.......2007-07-05

I didn't read the ad carefully when I purchased this product. Even though we thought it was an album of Bob Newhart's comedy routines we enjoyed listening to the book. It was a 3 CD book and we enjoyed alternating this book with the other audiobooks we had purchased.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-06-22

I like Bob Newhart, but this book was not as good as I was hoping for. It was not a quick read.

Not one to rest on her laurels, the witty star of stage and screen has since dedicated her life to writing a hilarious new book. That book is this book. After years of painstaking, round-the-clock research, surviving on a mere twenty minutes of sleep a night, and collaborating with lexicographers, plumbers, and mathematicians, DeGeneres has crafted a book that is both easy to use and very funny. Along with her trademark ramblings, The Funny Thing Is...contains hundreds of succinct insights into her psyche, supplemented by easy-to-understand charts, graphs, and diagrams so that you'll never miss a joke. Overseeing all aspects of production, DeGeneres labored over details both significant and insignificant, including typefaces, page number placement, and which of the thousands of world languages to use. Ultimately she selected English, as it's her mother tongue, but translations into Hindi and Pig Latin are already in the works. DeGeneres takes an innovative approach to the organization of her book by utilizing a section in the beginning that includes the name of each chapter, along with a corresponding page number. She calls it the ""Table of Contents,"" and she is confident that it will become the standard to which all books in the future will aspire. Some of the other innovative features you'll find in this edition: . More than 50,000 simple, short words arranged in sentences that form paragraphs. . Thousands of observations on everyday life -- from terrible fashion trends to how to handle seating arrangements for a Sunday brunch with Paula Abdul, Diane Sawyer, and Eminem. . All twenty-six letters of the alphabet. Sure to make you laugh, The Funny Thing Is...is an indispensable reference for anyone who knows how to read or wants to fool people into thinking they do."

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Oh, Ellen . . . WHY?.......2007-09-25

I adore Ellen and watch her show daily. I thought this book would be hilarious, but I was extremely disappointed, and I'm not a picky reader. It's not well written and jumps around too much. The jokes don't carry because Ellen's not there telling them and showing visual expressions. There's no point, and she's either trying too hard, or she's just not funny on paper. This book is unfortunate. Ellen is better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-09-05

Listening to Ellen read her own book is so funny. I listened to the entire book on a trip too and from Vermont. I was literally laughing out loud. And she has made some adjustments to the chapters so it geared towards the listener not the reader. It is light and funny, no real plot to it, which makes it an easy read if you don't have a lot of time on the road at once. I really enjoyed it.

2 out of 5 stars a terrible disappointment.......2007-07-29

I am a big Ellen Degeneres fan, this audio CD does her no justice. Although she reads it herself, much of her comedy is her impeccible sense of timing and her facial expressions that accompany her schtick. Obviously she can't use either of those tools with the audio CD. Hence, it comes across flat and lifeless. While the material is funny enough, I'm sure Ellen herself will admit, the delivery is the most important part of comedy. As anyone who has ever tried to tell a joke will attest it is all about timing and delivery.

5 out of 5 stars Audio tapes are even better!!!.......2007-04-16

I love Ellen and love her show but seldom get to watch due to a busy career and very long, very boring commute. The perfect solution--the audio tape version of this hilarious book. It is sooo funny, and the best thing is you get to hear it in Ellen's own voice, with her perfect comic timing! While other drivers were cursing and contemplating road-rage, I was laughing hysterically! Well worth the very few dollars I paid for the cassette version!

4 out of 5 stars Funny stuff.......2007-01-10

If your looking for a good fun book to read its this one. Ellen wirtes some good stuff just as she does in her stand up acts. If you like Ellen you will for sure like this book. And laugh alot

Book Description

Meet Brandy Alexander, a young woman from South Philadelphia, with a big mouth, an even bigger heart and a little problem with impulse control. It's not her fault trouble seems to follow her around. Okay, it is her fault, but why quibble over details? When Brandy (a puff piece reporter for a local Los Angeles TV news station) returns to her hometown, after a four year absence, she is thrilled to be reunited with friends and family. But her joy is short-lived when her best friend, John, becomes the victim of a tragic accident. Brandy is alone in thinking that the death is no "accident," and as she sets out to prove her theory, she stumbles upon a political scandal of major proportions. Things begin to heat up when it appears that her former boyfriend, police detective Robert Anthony DiCarlo, is involved in sabotaging the investigation. The one thing Brandy knows for sure is that people keep turning up dead, and if she doesn't get some answers, fast, she could end up on the short list. As Brandy searches out the truth, she gains some unexpected allies, including sexy, dangerous, street-savvy Nicholas Santiago, and the now-married Bobby, who still holds a torch for his former girlfriend. With humor, guts and determination Brandy tackles each challenge, be it dodging a bullet or resisting that box of Tastykakes in the cupboard. Murder, mayhem and romance abound in Shelly Fredman's novel, proving there really is No Such Thing as a Secret.

5 out of 5 stars I Want More!!.......2007-08-05

What is a woman who is half Jewish, half Catholic, named after an alcoholic beverage and a porn star like? She is Brandy Alexander, a wannabe investigative journalist, a little quirky, a lot of fun, hilarious and absolutely loveable.

Brandy has been in Los Angeles for the past four years covering fluff assignments that pay the bills, but don't really satisfy her longing for harder edged investigative reporting. She comes home to Philly to be in a friend's wedding and soon finds herself trying to solve a murder.

Coming back to Philly brings Brandy face to face with the ex that forced her to leave her home town in the first place. Bobby is a sexy copy who just happens to be married with child now. Helping Brandy with her amateur investigating is a mysterious man of many talents, Nick Santiago.

Throughout the book the sexual chemistry is bubbling. Bobby and Brandy have a lot of unresolved issues and leftover feelings. Nick and Brandy have instant heat and a whole lot of new territory to cover.

This was a brilliant introduction to what I hope will be a long running and thoroughly entertaining series. I found the characters to be refreshing and completely genuine. These were all people you'd expect to meet or already know in your own town, people you'd love to hang out with on a Friday night. In between all the laughs and chemistry was an intriguing mystery that kept me turning the pages long after my body wanted to sleep. I started this book last night and finished it this morning; I didn't want to put it down and did only when absolutely necessary.

No Such Thing As A Secret was laugh out loud funny and a completely engaging read. All I can say is thankfully I have book two, No Such Thing As A Good Blind Date, already on my book shelves, because I can hardly wait to tear into it. I was in a book slump... and this book rescued me; Shelly Fredman has a brand new fan.

5 out of 5 stars FAB NEW SERIES, FAB NEW HEROINE!!!!.......2007-03-22

Native Philadelphian Brandy Alexander fled her beloved city some four years ago for a semi-glamourous job of reporter in the City of Angels. Of course, no one in L.A. knows that she moved to get away from a love affair gone bad...just as her Philly crew has no idea just how silly and unglamourous her reporting gig in L.A. actually is. When childhood friend Franny calls to announce her impending marriage and the need for Brandy to serve as a bridesmaid, Brandy knows that she has no choice but to finally return home. Brandy quickly discovers that not much has changed on the East Coast...the old neighborhood is still intact, her friends are all the same, and former love-of-her-life Bobby DiCarlo is still married. But when best friend Johnny greets her at the airport with tales of murder, suspicious black SUVs, and missing people, Brandy is skeptical; when John starts pointing out malevolent-looking cars, she is intrigued; but when tragedy strikes quite unexpectedly, Brandy is horrified. With threats looming over herself and her loved ones, Brandy is determined to get to the bottom of all of the strange goings on. And the heat is really kicked up a notch when Brandy enlists the help of the gorgeous Nicholas Santiago. But...is Bobby's marriage really on the rocks? And with all of this testosterone flying around, given the drought that's been her love life, can Brandy really concentrate long enough to solve a mystery?
In the first of what promises to be at least as entertaining as Evanovich's Plum series, Ms. Fredman brings us a satisfying mystery with a romantic and comedic twist. I am thrilled that I have yet another series, and another author's work to look forward to...and I have already begun to spread the word.

Shelly fredman, is a great new breakthrough writer. shes funny and fresh. Her character brandy is totaly believeable, and so sweetly written.
I was hooked from the first page, and couldnt put it down untill the last page. All my friends recieved her book as gifts this holiday. They all loved it.....

5 out of 5 stars A titillating mystery full of fun and mayhem.......2006-03-14

Shelly Fredman is a former Philadelphian who writes, teaches, elementary school, and loves chocolate, Philadelphia, and an active imagination. She has previously published CREEPS, a young-adult novel, and is presently working on a sequel to NO SUCH THING AS A SECRET. Shelly's motto is that "Reality is for people who lack imagination." Her second motto is that chocolate is good for you and you can never eat too much.

Brandy Alexander has returned from her puff reporting job in L.A. after a four year absence in Philadelphia. She left behind her love and soulmate, Robert Anthony DiCarlo, who married and had a child in her absence. While she is busy being joyfully reunited with her Phillie friends, her best friend, John, is apparently killed in a boating accident. Brandy witnesses the explosion, and her life changes dramatically. She decides to hunt down the killer, with Bobby (the police officer) challenging her every step of the way. Is Bobby involved in police graft or a coverup? Brandy enlist the aid of sexy Nick Santiago to help her as she enters the underworld of Philadelphia:

"The music pulsated in the background, permeating the air we breathed. Nick stared at me, and I flushed under his gaze. Damn, isn't there some kind of pill you can take for congenital blushing? I shifted uncomfortably in my seat. Wordlessly, he stood and stretched his arm out to me. 'I'm not a very good dancer,' I apologized. 'Neither am I,' he said, as he took me in his arms. Liar."

First off, Shelly Fredman is a hilarious writer! She has such a warm style of writing that the reader can't help but be pulled in as her Phillie friends rejoice in Brandy's return. But make no mistake, this plot is serious and confusing. Brandy Alexander takes the reader on a ride not soon to be forgotten. There is political corruption; danger everywhere; and Brandy has to transform from a feature reporter to an earnest investigator. But Fredman doesn't stop there. She surrounds Brandy with two luscious men, both vying for her attention. Brandy herself is lovably unaware of their intentions, but ultra-aware of their sexuality.

NO SUCH THING AS A SECRET is a titillating mystery full of fun and mayhem. There is a rich under-texture that separates the story from other authors and thus makes it a standout. But beware, Fredman leaves the love interest up in the air, which will guarantee that her readers will be clamoring for the next installment of Brandy Alexander. Cleverly done!

Do yourself and your friends a favor and get this book asap. It's hilarious! My friends and I read it for our book club and, unlike Pride & Prejudice, we actually read it (no offense Jane Austen). So I highly recommend it to people who like funny mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......2000-02-12

"Funny Things Kids Say" is a wonderful reminder of real life with children. It is humorous yet so true. Children will interpret words and situations in the most ridiculous ways. And "Funny Things Kids Say" is an excellent look at the brighter side of childhood. Once you start it, you won't put it down! Highly recommended for parents, teachers and others who deal daily with our fascinating children.

5 out of 5 stars Parents' Choice Award.......1999-01-20

The Parents' Choice Foundation, the only nonprofit consumer guide of its kind, has selected "The Funny Things Kids Say, Vol. 3" for honors as an approved book for parents and children. The Foundation said the book is "an amazing accomplishment."

5 out of 5 stars TAKE A BREAK AND GET READY TO GIGGLE!.......1998-10-07

As a bonified rat in the rat race of the current modern day world - my breaks - like millions of others - are often over looked. But when I get really bogged down - The Funny Things Kids Say Vol. 3 comes off of the book shelf. Hi, my name is Jodie Lynn and I am a parenting columnist. I don't profess to be an expert - but kids are one thing I know - as does my good friend - Grace Housholder - the author of this book. Any time of any day when you feel like you are going to explode from "overscheduling," go for the gusto and open up this delightful and wonderful book. Kids really do say the funniest things and it is captured uniquely on every page. Just remember these words - TAKE A BREAK AND GET READY TO GIGGLE! :)

5 out of 5 stars This will keep you laughing for years........1998-10-07

This book is a family-friendly, inspirational book, making it ideal for your personal, school or church library. Grace Housholder's collection of "one-liners" by kids will keep you laughing for many years.

5 out of 5 stars For parents, grandparents & children -- a treasure!.......1997-05-07

The afternoon I placed Housholder's books on my coffeetable in my living room was the last I saw of them for weeks. They turned up on my nine year old daughter's nightstand -- where they've been cherished ever since! With three younger brothers, my daughter gets a kick out of being "in the know" -- I recommend this book not only for parents, grandparents and anyone else who LOVES children, but for children themselves! It's fun, "family-friendly" reading for all

5 out of 5 stars Captures the Essence of Forum, and then some!.......2001-06-22

"Forum" is one of those rare musical comedies...one of those we hardly ever stuble across. "Forum" is actually funny. And I don't just mean "haha" funny. I mean roll in the aisles and laugh until it hurts funny. The jokes just never stop coming-even during the musical numbers!

Here, one can see the springboard for three Tony award winning broadway productions: the script. This is the foundation of "Forum's" comic genius, with a combination of low-brow vaudeville and high-brow wordplay. Comedy in this show hits you at every level in every direction!

The best part is that several songs cut from the show are included in an appendix. There is also a great introduction that explains that long and rough journey "Forum" took before it became a huge hit.

4 out of 5 stars A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.......2000-03-27

This book was very enjoyable. I would recomend it to anyone looking for a light hearted book to read that is not to difficult. This book makes you think of what could happen in your everyday life. I think everyone should read this book.

4 out of 5 stars I thought it was great but not perfect.......2000-03-24

I thought the music was very wonderful and original and the way the music was displayed was very good indeed. The score not only is great in itself, it was also a great accompanyment to the liberetto book witch you can also get on amazon.com. for any lovers of this play or anyone who likes broadway at all, I would definatly recomend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Better to see than hear..........2000-01-07

All of the authors of this musical were not as developed in their art as they are now. This is an excellent show full of comedy... but still not Sondheim's best. Since amazon.com rarely gives good suggestion... I will give my own! Check out these scripts by sondheim: Company, Anyone Can Whistle, Sunday in the Park With George

4 out of 5 stars A Whole LOT of FUNNY things happen on the way to the forum!.......1999-10-02

True love, true lust, a pimp, a pauper, fun and frolic, mystery and mayhem, and just when you think there is no hope for a fairytale ending (as they say in the play "we'll never find happiness!""Well, we'll just have to be happy without it!") a happy ending (A total surprise to everyone including the cast!)!

Based on a Greek comedy (think B.C!), and revamped in the early 60's with music by Sondheim (Into The Woods, West Side Story), and script by Gelbart (*M*A*S*H*), the play stays true to it's root's (with every male in a dress, O.K. toga!) but throws in a lil' of that almost, but not quite to the edge 60's humor (take for instance when three cast members all end up in a wedding gown, but one was not exactly born to be a bride-if you know what I mean!)

If you love Shakespeare, and Austin Powers, or if you're looking for something in-between, try "Funny Thing"!

This play keeps you on your toes with it's many twists and turns, hilarious cases of mistaken identity, and out right tummy ticklers.

It's sheer fun!

    Book Description

This is the first book to offer detailed advice on the effective use of humor in business situations such as presentations, meetings, or seminars. The author is a speech writer who has written for the CEOs of AT&T, Xerox, Monsanto, and the Bank of America. He has also written comedy for entertainers such as Rodney Dangerfield. Presents the basics of writing humorously in a clear, step-by-step fashion, and reveals invaluable tricks of the trade for creating one's own custom-tailored jokes using techniques employed by professional comedy writers. Also provides short one-line jokes arranged by subject, as well as longer, story-type jokes arranged by the meaning or the point that the story illustrates.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book -- It got me out of a jam.......2000-11-28

Struggling to put together a farwell speech for a fellow employee -- and not making any headway, I got a copy of this book. It helped me out of a jam. I made a darn good farwell speech (if I say so myself) by employing the tricks that the author of this book describes. (I also grabbed a handful of his jokes, all of which proved to be very funny to my audience.)

I recommend this book to anyone who has to make a company presentation of any kind that could use a dose of humor. What makes this book so good is that you can make jokes of your own that fit the occassion -- it isn't just a run of the mill joke book.

    5 out of 5 stars It's Terrific!.......2000-11-28

Perhaps the best of its genre, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Boardroom" places the onus of boring corporate meetings on the speakers themselves. No one is too important to consider their audience, and Mr. Iapoce effectively nudges "suits" to loosen their ties and deliver their messages effectively. Its comedic tips are simply that: tips for catching the attention of listeners thus ensuring that one is "heard."

Buy this one and share it at the office!

1 out of 5 stars Just not funny!.......2000-03-25

I've read this book a couple of weeks ago, and I'm really surprised about the good review it's gotten here! It's just not funny and anyone who'd use the pathetic "jokes" listed in it would me a total dork of himself in a real life business situation. Avoid this one and rather buy the excellent "Podium Humor : A Raconteur's Treasury of Witty and Humorous Stories" by James C. Humes!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! It even works for lawyers!.......1999-03-20

Few gatherings cry out for humor as loudly as those in which all the attendees are lawyers. Let's face it: they're usually the joke, not the jokers. This book can enliven a discussion on "subordinated debentures." It should be required reading for anyone on the infamous "partner track."

5 out of 5 stars This book saved my life........1998-10-23

I'm not the greatest speaker in the world to begin with, and I grabbed this book in desperation when I had to deliver some comments at a roast for a colleague who was retiring.

The two evenings I spent with this book were well worth it. I discovered how to give a humorous presentation and my audience liked it!

    I highly recommend this book.
