In the second of the "Merlin Missions"--hardback additions to Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House series--plucky heroes Jack and Annie must once again must travel back in time to rescue Camelot from looming danger.
One wonders why Merlin can't handle this sort of thing himself, but then of course we wouldn't get a chance to see Jack and Annie have another seat-of-the-pants adventure, getting mixed up with shape-shifting magic, armies of birds, a puzzling gem of power, and all sorts of other trouble. With the help of their old pal Teddy (Morgan le Fay's apprentice, last seen in dog form in four earlier Tree House stories), the two "Master Librarians and Magicians of Everyday Magic" must solve the mystery behind a castle full of ghosts and a menacing army of ravens. Not surprisingly, half the trouble comes in unraveling Merlin's riddles and helping Teddy use his rhyming magic correctly.
Osborne doesn't challenge readers overmuch (including the constant restatement of plot elements, perhaps worried that kids might otherwise forget or lose interest) and many parts of the story barely convince (like Teddy's "period" dialogue, e.g., "'Tis cool indeed"), but fans of the Magic Tree House will no doubt love another installment. If you like magical places this is the book for you. The ages are 7-11. Jack, and Annie, and teddy have to finish a mission. That they were assigned by sorcer. They have to restore a castles order.
Jack, Annie, and Teddy have to restore a castle to normal. Jack is the leader. Annie helps and takes to animals. Teddy is a young sorcer. Teddy has rims to make the magic work.
Jack, Annie, and Teddy have to work together to save the castle. Teddy comes up with a plan to get the diamond. Jack found the diamond right away and flew to the castle. They help each other to protect the diamond. These three have to work together to over come obstacle.
The story takes place in a castle, tree house, and a nest. The castle is hunted. The tree house is failed with books. It can also transport you almost any ware. The nest is failed with jewelry and rare items.
Jack and Annie have to get back. Sometimes supped up on the ledge. It was the raven king. He had Teddy in a bird cage. You will have to read it to find the rest out.

If you like adventure books, than read this book. This book is about three kids who go to a castle and try to help a family, while trying not to be too scared. This is a really good book for anyone to curl up and read. It also has easy text for young readers to read and understand. Maybe you will like this book if you read it too.

My son absolutely adores this series. He just turned 7. I still am reading the stories to him, but he can pick up some words and phrases as I read to him. We read the series in order and now are beginnning to reread them.
This story can be read individually, but I recommend reading the earlier ones to get to know the characters. Jack and Annie are very likeable. They try to achieve their goal with the assistance of clues given to them by the magician Merlin. It is good for problem solving and also has alot of educational tidbits.

We really love the Kumon Skill Books. They teach skills in such small increments that all types of learners can catch on. We use them for our young son who is already learning to read before Kindergarten but his dextarity is not up to writing yet. This is a good way for him to begin writing very slowly with lots of guide lines.

My 4.5 year old knew his numbers, but when I saw the inside of this book on amazon, I realized that I have not used any technique to build his basics in counting etc., and bought this book
Numbers 1-30 starts with simple curve excercises that allow the child to
1. learn drawing curves
2. reading and writing numbers
3. introduces children [ and parents ] to focus on the stroke and the right way to write the numbers.
4. Counting as groups and allows build up pattern recognition skills
My son who was used to counting with his finger, now can count in groups by looking at a group of dots. Thanks Kumon.. I just purchased the next book .. counting 1 to 120

I would highly recommend any of the kumon books, because they are very well done. The first 20 pages of this book were number tracings. Then it went to writing numbers by copying the numbers from very small text to writing them from memorization. This was too big of a jump for my son who had just turned 5. So we took a break and did the Uppercase book. Then we did the "review" part of the Simple addition book. Then we went back to this book and my son was able to continue just fine. I loved the book, but there should really be a whole book dedicated to tracing numbers, before requiring the child to write numbers from memory.

This is a fun book, more of a browse and skim than a read. That's a good thing. Lots of facts and figures (factoids?) about turning and being age 30. Perfect gift material. Plus, it's a little square of a book, so it sits unobtrusively wherever you want, and the design is great, too.

Why continue to be deceived..........2006-06-26
Tim LaHaye, Jerry Jenkins, and others in the Pre-Trib circle, such as Ed Hindson, Tommy Ice, Chuck Missler, etc., continue to put forth the same deceptions that Hal Lindsey popularized decades ago. The notion of a pre-tribulation rapture is foreign to scripture, it is foreign to the teachings of the early Church, and it is grooming the Church for destruction through ignorance and lack of preparation for what is really coming. These men are novices and not prophecy "experts" or "scholars" by any stretch of the imagination; they are those who tickle the ears of gullible Christians. Why continue to be deceived? Tim Cohen, in his excellent book, "The AntiChrist and a Cup of Tea," provides biblically sound and testable evidence to show that the coming AntiChrist is known NOW. Not only that, the same author (Tim Cohen) has now put out the strongest presentation on the whole issue of the rapture EVER offered to the saints of God in Christ: "The REAL Rapture". If you really want to know the truth about the timing of the coming rapture, then you need to hear Tim Cohen's "The REAL Rapture" (based on a volume in his forthcoming "Messiah, History, and the Tribulation Period" series (see Prophecy House's web site, prophecyhouse dot com, for details on these items).

The book was okay I guess but I found it a bit of a scare tactic and used as a way to convert non-christians into going to church which you shouldn't do.
The book started off where the first left us. All four kids are at the church and Lionel has accepted christ but the other three want to wait. Finally they break up. Lionel and Ryan go off and Vicki and Judd do the same. By the end Lionel's uncle is dead and two more of the kids have come to christ.
Maybe it's just me but I think the writers are going for a Judd Vicki pairing later on down the road. I hope so but you never know.

From start to finish this book is a real joy! Delve into the thoughts of Cleopatra VII in this historically accurate account of her early teenage years. A good book for children and adults alike, you can watch your child become fascinated with the goings-on and intrigues of an age that is not written about enough. The Cleopatra we meet in the story is easy to sympathize with and relate to, as well as a character to admire. The book also paints a detailed picture of the setting and age and what it was like to be a princess in ancient Egypt.
I have read most of the Royal Diaries books aloud to my daughters (7, 9, 11), which always succeed to help enamour them with history. However, of the ones I have read, I find Cleopatra VII: Daughter of the Nile, Egypt, 57 B.C. to be all of our's favorite.
Also, my children love the wonderful style of all the books: the hardbacks are a lovely gold, with a detailed color representation of the princess and gold-tipped pages. They make my children feel like royalty themselves!
Educational and entertaining, this is a wonderful choice for a gift or for your own enjoyment.

This is a charming, small book concerning a very short period of Cleopatra's life. It generally concords with what is known of Cleopatra. I am disappointed that it was not larger in scope.

This is a great book! (Much better than Elizabeth) It is like listening to a real person. This is my favorite book in the royal diary series that I have read so far. It is packed with action, adventure, emotion, sadness, happiness, and much more! I just finished reading this about an hour ago. It is wonderful. I really recommend it!
Cleopatra VII... =a GREAT book!!!.......2007-03-26
Cleopatra... is an awesome book about Cleopatra VII when she was 12-14 years old. The story begins when her father, King Ptolemy Alutes, begins losing support among the commoners. He leaves on a ship to go to the Romans for help, and Cleopatra figures that two Ptolmies are better than one, so Cleopatra sneaks aboard to caome. Her father knows no Latin, so she finds it hard to figure out how he will speak to Ceasar, so she ends up doing all the talking after Pompey and his men decide to get smart and insult them in Latin so (he thinks) they won't know what he's saying. Cleopatra has two sisters, Berenice, who is eight years older and very nice, and Tryphaena, who is as "mean and snappish as a crocodile." Whilist Cleopatra and her father are in Rome, Tryphaena takes over the throne and sends them a message that if they ever set foot in Egypt again, they will be beheaded. One night, the King's friends kill Tryphaena in the middle of the night, and afterwards are killed with flying swords be Berenice's guards. Then Berenice takes over. Meanwhile, Cleopatra and her father have finally won the Romans over, and when they return, the King orders Berenice to be put to death for pretending to be Queen. The epilouge is sad, but you can't change history. Overall one of the best books I have ever read, and if you're smart, you'll read it too.

-"I could feel my insides shaking. Would this sister try to poison me? Yes, I believe so. As for my other older sister, Berenice-never! She and I adore each other even though I am eight years younger. I took the cup and raised it toward Tryphaena as if toasting her, but really I was watching the liquid, looking for oil floating on the surface, or powder sticking to the sides of the cup. If I suspected poison and tossed it into the pool, she would have her guards behead me on the spot. If it was indeed poison, one sip and I could die... My eyes closed as I took the first sip, as if savoring such and excellent taste, but really my thought was, O Isis, I am afraid... My stomach turned with nervousness, or was it from a fearsome death beginning in me?" Cleopatra was the third daughter of Ptolemy XII and Cleopatra V Tryphaena. Cleopatra's mother died when Cleopatra was very young. When Cleopatra's father is awoken by a hissing sound in his room, he is frightened to see a black adder in the striking position, while his favorite slave jumps on the adder to save the pharaoh, his slave is bitten and killed, then the snake got away. The next day, one of his slaves brings him his food and the Pharaoh orders him to test it, and after his slave takes the first sip of wine he is writhing on the floor in pain. The Pharaoh decides to go into hiding so his guards can find the assassin and kill him. While the king is gone, Tryphaena, the Pharaohs oldest daughter, decided that she was going to be Pharaoh. While Cleopatra's father is gone, Cleopatra suspects her oldest sister for the assassination attempts. Then one night Tryphaena is drug out to the theater, and beheaded on the spot, the same fait was to her guards. The Pharaoh comes back to the palace and announced that he was going to go to Rome to get help to gain control over his people once and for all. When Cleopatra hears the news she decides to go with him so she can translate the Roman language into Egyptian. When they finally arrive in Rome, the royal family soon finds out that the Roman troops are in the northern part of the hemisphere and can't come back for about a half a year. When they finally come back to Rome, there is a huge hurricane out in the ocean, so Cleopatra and her father cannot make the journey home until the sea subsides. It isn't till two years later that Cleopatra and her father can return home. All the while, Berenice has taken the throne and has married six times, each one of her husbands hanged for not meeting her standards. I liked this book, because it had a very unusual story line and many "father killing daughter" scenes.
-One reason I liked this book because it has many funny parts in it, even when Cleopatra may not mean for it to be funny. For example, "I enjoy my father when his high spirits are from good news, not good wine." Another example, "I did not want to wipe off my fingers on the soiled tablecloth or in me hair (like two of the senators were doing)."
-Another reason I liked this book is because of all of the deaths that the family ordered on one another. An example is this, "For three days, there has been much celebrating. Tryphaena is dead... After we left Alexandria, his friends sneaked into the palace while Tryphaena slept, then killed her guards. Awakened by the commotion, she sat up in bed and screamed for help while putting on her slippers (an odd thing to do, in my opinion.) But men tied up her arms and carried her through the dark streets to the Gymnasion, where some of our wrestlers were waiting. One of them stood behind her, grabbed her around the neck, and then with his strong arms lifted her up until she had strangled. A slipper that had fallen from her foot was delivered to Father as proof."
-I liked this book because of all the letters that were written, you can tell who they are and what they are writing about. One example is "Olympus, friend, loyal companion, and student of medicine in Alexandria, to Princess Cleopatra in Rome, friend much missed: Good news, come home."
-I enjoyed reading this book because Cleopatra could understand different languages and a general didn't know that and insulted the Pharaoh while she was there. "As our meal began, Pompey walked over to our table, smiling broadly. When Father stood to greet him, Pompey clasped both his arms and began speaking rapidly in Latin. Father didn't understand one word, but I surely did. `King Auletes,' the general said, `so we finally meet, you gorilla face. Indeed you are a half-baked, a decrepit drunk with a nose like a plum. Did out trumpets wake you from your nap, you lazy dullard?' Dropping Fathers arms, he turned to where I reclined. `Ah, little child,' He smiled. Slowly I stood up and looked around me. The soldiers were grinning with pleasure at their leader's clever trick. I thought in my heart that I must be brave and strong, like Queen Ester and the Queen of Sheba who in their day spoke before the most powerful men on earth. `Sir,' I began in Latin, `I am Cleopatra, Princess of the Nile, third daughter of the King and Pharaoh of Egypt, the man you have so cruelly insulted.' At first, I was so nervous my voice trembled. The Latin words felt awkward on my tongue, but soon I was speaking with confidence, quite well, it seems, because the look on Pompey's face was one of shock. His soldiers' smiles dropped like dead flies. I began to relax." I really enjoyed this book and I think that many others will enjoy it as well.

Pretty cute book.......2004-11-24
This is not your typical Seuss book - it has 3 stories, all of which teach a little lesson. Once again, Seuss' language can be a little obnoxious so I must warn you there that you'll need to change a few words like "stupid" as you go. That word just doesn't sound too great coming from a two-year-old. Anyway, it shows how you should be careful of what you say before you say it in I can lick 30 tigers (meaning, beat them up and not actually "taste them" as you may think), how you should take care of yourself and not let others tell you what to do in King Louie, and to watch what you think about and how you spend your spare time in Thunk Glunk. Valuable lessons and entertaining as well. Not too big of a favorite in this house, but worth reading once in awhile.

"I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today! and Other Stories" presents a trio of stories told in verse and illustrated by Dr. Seuss in 1969. Each story makes a simple point. The title story is about a young fellow who looks like a smaller version of the Cat in the Hat (there is reason to believe he is part of the next generation) who declares that he can lick thirty tigers today. However, as soon as he see the thirty tigers he starts finding reasons to whittle down that number, which should indicate to young readers the problems of biting off more than you can chew (pick whatever phrase that expresses this idea you like even if it is your eyes are bigger than your stomach).
"King Looie Katz" is about the fancy cat named Looie who was the King of Katzen-stein and who was so proud of his royal tail that not only did he wash it every morning in a ten-gallon golden pail. In fact, King Looie is so proud that he decides that his tail should never be allowed to touch the earth and he made Fooie Katz follow him around and keep from dragging on the ground. When Fooie notices his tail is sagging he makes Kooie Katz lift up his tail. Soon all the cats in Katzen-stein are walking round and round keeping each other's tails from dragging on the ground. All the cats, that is, except one in this simple story about being more "demo-catic."
Finally there is "The Glunk that Got Thunk," which has the distinction of being the wordiest Dr. Seuss story I have ever read. The sister of the small cat we met in the first story likes to go upstairs after supper and use her Thinker-Upper. Usually she thinks up friendly little things with smiles and fuzzy fur. But one night she decides to go for go for something more fun and discovers she has thunked a Glunk. There are two problems with this. First, a Glunk cannot be UN-thunk. Second, this Glunk calls his mother each night, which is an expensive long distance phone call (ten dollars a minute), and this particular Glunk will never stop talking (which explains why this story gets so wordy; beginning readers will be amazed). There are actually several lessons that can be drawn from this one.
None of these are what I would call first level Dr. Seuss books but there are three of them, which just about adds up to a solid collection. You readers might find it strange to find three short stories collected in one, but there are other such collections out there. These stories are a bit more inclined towards making points beyond the good doctor's normal delightful infatuation with the realm of imagination.

These three stories are a wonderful trip for children into an imaginative world, where they learn important lessons, in the most fun way possible.
In the first, `I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today' the character learns that his bravado does not live up to the reality, in `The Glunk that Got Thunk' children learn how insurmountable problems can be solved by working together and keeping a level head, and in `King Loii Katz' children learn a very important lesson:
That sometimes one has to follow ones own conscience and put a stop to the bandwagon. It only takes one to say `ENOUGH'.

I love this book. I've used it in my classroom countless times and my students love it, too. They didn't realize I was working in logic lessons and team work. They just thought it was fun.

We have a great time with these books in the car. A fun time for the whole family on short or long car rides. A wonderful alternative to watching DVD's because of the thinking and interaction it involves.

Hello! You can call me StoryMaker. The Very First Christians by Paul Maier sums up the book of Acts in a picture book full of detailed paintings. Christopher and his grandfather are just fishing when Chris wonders about a certain fish symbol. Chris's grandfather is happy to tell him that its an early symbol of Christianity and ends up telling Chris all about the early Christians. Practically everything in Acts is told in this book in a child-friendly way that you are bound to love.
