This timeless Dr. Seuss classic was first published in 1960, and has been delighting readers ever since. Sam-I-am is as persistent as a telemarketer, changing as many variables as possible in the hopes of convincing the nameless skeptic that green eggs and ham are a delicacy to be savored. He tries every manner of presentation with this "nouveau cuisine"--in a house, with a mouse, in a box, with a fox, with a goat, on a boat--to no avail. Then finally, finally the doubter caves under the tremendous pressure exerted by the tireless Sam-I-am. And guess what? Well, you probably know what happens, but even after reading Green Eggs and Ham the thousandth time, the climactic realization that green eggs and ham are "so good, so good, you see" is still a rush. As usual, kids will love Dr. Seuss's wacky rhymes and whimsical illustrations--and this time, they might even be so moved as to finally take a taste of their broccoli. (Ages 4 to 8)

1 out of 5 stars I shudder at the message this story sends to our children........2007-09-09

If you're searching for a literary example of peer pressure, look no further than Dr. Seuss's subtly horrifying "Green Eggs and Ham." The "hero" of this tale, Sam-I-Am, spends the entirety of the book trying to force green eggs and ham upon a nameless skeptic. The "villain" turns down the offer several times, but Sam-I-Am persists, going so far as to follow him home in order to make him try the green eggs and ham. He uses several textbook methods of peer pressure, including the famous, "You'll never know that you don't like it if you don't try it." He refuses to respect the man's right to say no, and badgers him incessantly until he caves under the pressure.

What disgusts me most about the end of the story is that once the man tries the green eggs and ham, he loves them and is simply another addition to a pool of addicts. Dr. Seuss's tragic allegory for the rising drug use among young people that plagued his time period is brilliant, but certainly not appropriate for young children. Sam-I-Am is too easily twisted to become a hero, opening the antagonist's mind to new things, rather than a metaphor for Satan as I believe was originally intended.

In conclusion, do not read this book to your children unless you are willing to explain to them that people like Sam-I-Am should be avoided at all costs, and that they should never follow the path of the story's antagonist.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Dr Seuss is most definitely responsible for putting a lot of people off their dinner, and also for encouraging the experimentation with food coloring in a whole range of normal foodstuffs that probably did not need spectrum alteration in the first place.

What a devious, sneaky and subversive publication.

5 out of 5 stars Green Eggs and Ham.......2007-07-16

This book is great for all ages. This book is great for children who are just learning to read and who need help with rhyming. The book is small enough that a child can hold it themselves and don't have to worry about harming the book or dropping it.

5 out of 5 stars Green eggs and ham ??? In one word, how---absurd !!! SMILES.......2007-07-12

The children's book entitled Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss does a great job of teaching young kids to try new things while increasing their vocabulary. The illustrations are very nicely done with hybrid "things" replacing people. These "things" are part human and part "thing"--great concept to stimulate a child's imagination! The text is written in easy to understand words so that with a little help your child be able to read this book independently soon.

The book tells a cute story of how a smaller "thing" or, "person named Sam" follows a "grown up thing" or, "person who is not Sam" around, beseeching them to try some food they've never eaten before, namely green eggs and ham. Happily, the food turns out to be delicious in the end. While the basic moral of the story is not to be afraid of trying new things; the child learns a lot of vocabulary and comparisons at the same time. Great!

Specifically, children learn the concepts of "here," "there" and "anywhere;" "like" versus "do not like;" and modes of transportation including "car" and "train." Excellent!

The book is nicely bound and the strength of the hardcover binding makes the book tolerate the bending and occasional carelessness of a young child who is learning to read partly by using this book. Great!

I highly recommend Green Eggs and Ham for younger kids who are just learning to read. This book will increase their vocabulary by introducing words, comparisons and pictures. The child gets encouragement to try new things; and the adorable illustrations will delight children everywhere.

Great job, Dr. Seuss!

5 out of 5 stars 18 month old daughter loves it...screeeeams if I read a different book!.......2007-07-08

I just started reading this to my almost 18mo old girl. It gets very wordy and repetetive, and I thought she didn't like it because she kept wanting to skip over the pages that had over 5 lines of print, but she does really love it so much that if I put it down and pick up another book, she howls and throws a temper tantrum.

5 out of 5 stars My first and best cookbook.......2007-01-22

My mother valued her solitude in her kitchen, and so I didn't know a thing about cooking when I decided to make my new girlfriend dinner. Thanks to this cookbook, the first meal I ever cooked was a cheese souffle, and because of the book's never-fall recipe I looked like a culinary genius. It's now seventeen years later and I'm married to that woman, and both of us still return to this book. When my two children are ready to cook I'll be buying them copies.

5 out of 5 stars The Absolute Beginner's Cookbook: or, How Long Do I Cook a 3-Minute Egg?.......2006-08-23

It's perfect for my boyfriend who is learning to cook and asked for "cooking for dummies" but I saw this book and the excerpt I read was great so I got it instead.

1 out of 5 stars NOT for beginners. Assumes a lot........2006-03-25

This is overall an excellent cookbook. It's simple, easy to follow, and has good recipes. Not great but good. That being said, this is NOT a book for the absolute beginner. It assumes that you know a lot of basic terminology and technique, which is really stupid considering the title.

The book is marketed for people who don't know how to boil water, and yet on the very first page it tells you to fill a saucepan with cold water and immerse an egg. A SAUCEPAN? I don't know about you, but when I was a beginning cook, I called that particular item "a pot" -- the word saucepan is correct, but you'd need to be a culinary sort of person to know that a saucepan is not a pan at all, that is, not an object which is wide and round but only an inch deep. A novice cook sees the word PAN and thinks of a skillet\spider\frying pan. Most people do; it's an understandable error.

I gave my sister this book and asked her what she'd do when confronted with the instruction to fill a saucepan with cold water and immerse an egg. She went into the cupboard, took out a 14" frying pan about half an inch deep, filled it with water, and stuck the egg in. The egg was about three times as high as the sides of the pan. My sister isn't stupid, she just doesn't know that a saucepan is actually a small pot. Nobody who buys a book titled "How Long Do I Cook a Three-Minute Egg?" is going to know that!

After this, the book goes on with such instructions as, "dice the vegetables finely" ... um, dice? What does dice mean? Oh, it means to chop up? How was I supposed to know that? Into what shape do I chop? How big should the shapes be? How thin is finely? The book says nothing, so if you're unfamiliar with a fine dice, you're screwed.

After that, here's the book telling us "allow to simmer for half an hour" without ever bothering to mention what simmer means. Is it high heat? Low? The same heat I was cooking on before? Does it mean there are bubbles in the liquid? Again, no explanation whatsoever.

As I stated, this is a great book, but I cannot stress enough how it is NOT FOR BEGINNERS.

4 out of 5 stars You cook a 3-minute egg for 3 minutes........2006-03-22

Firstly, I enjoyed this book and its contents. It's great for one of two people. Either a child or possibly someone who's mother has made every meal for them since they were born and have to move out to go to college. Many of the things were far too simple. If someone wanted to make pasta sauce then they want to make it. They don't want to buy a can of some companies sauce and put their own spices in it. Also, the recipies are simplified and can make think taste not as great as you might have hoped. Other than these few things I think it's fantastic and it does have quite a few recipies that are going to be new to anyone most people picking it up.

4 out of 5 stars What I was looking for........2006-02-26

I bought this book as a gift for my grandchild who wants to start cooking. As I looked though it, I was pleased at its contents. It has the basics explained well with recipes that are simple but not so simple as to be boring. Actually my daughter has used it (mother of the child I bought it for)and was pleased with the recipe she used. I would recemmend this book to anyone interested in beginning cooking.

5 out of 5 stars You've Come a Long Way, Baby!.......2007-09-28

Although Betty McDonald writes with a great deal of wry humor (some might say sarcasm) about her situation on a Washington chicken ranch in the late 1920s and early 1930s, there is a rather sad undercurrent to the story. This is the story of a woman who has been led to believe that her husband is the master and that she must follow blindly where he leads. Though her retrospection includes humorous description, the unraveling of her marriage is obvious thoughout the narrative.
For those who find her description of Native Americans offensive, one must recall the time when this was written. Americans weren't as "enlightened" (now there is sarcasm!!)as we are now. I don't agree with those who find her "snobbish" - Mrs. McDonald was a fish out of water and knew it but couldn't just walk away from it. She cares about her neighbors, the Kettles and the Hicks, but she just doesn't fit in with them.
She is definitely showing us that country life has a definite downside.
Her description of the natural surroundings is vivid and makes you feel the terrain with her.
I would recommend this book to young women today just to show how far they have come since that time.

5 out of 5 stars Read it three times.......2007-09-04

I've read The Egg and I at least three times. The first
time I was about twelve, the second, maybe twenty-one
and the last time in the virtual dotage of sixty-two.

My ten year old self took this as a fabulous adventure
story and I wanted nothing more than to meet Gams and
the hyperactive grandma and eat a geoduck clam with
the MacDonalds.

At twenty-one, I laughed my head off. Being of an impractical
nature myself, I got anxious and then giggling at what
I took to be a hippies-in-the-woods story.

Last month, I nodded my head a lot as I read through my
mother's copy that was passed on through a few inheritances.
MacDonald looks to me now like an a woman who was sharp
before her time-a person who whose sense of adventure
and sense of humor allowed her to transcend the limited
choices she was offered in the 1950's and turn the egg she
was offered into a puffy, generous and thoroughly nutrisious
omellette.

-Lynn Hoffman, author of The New Short Course in Wine and a novel
about another original woman: bang BANG

5 out of 5 stars Well hatched plot.......2007-05-06

" The Egg And I " has stood the test of time as a book about the most basic lifestyle, farming. The trials and tribulations that any farmer and his wife will have to go through remain unchanged through the decades. "The Egg And I " can be read in any century and the movie of the same name with Fred MacMurray and Claudette Colbert is eminently watchable decades after it was made. Every actor in that movie has long died but the life in the film , and the book, will reamin forever. The gentle writing style with strong believable characters makes this book a worthy template for any writer to aspire to.

4 out of 5 stars So much for the romance of the pre-electric life.......2007-03-31

If you are thinking of living off the grid and going back to nature, this book is for you. Chicken farming for sure isn't like this any more, except for maybe those "uncaged hens" eggs you can buy at Whole Foods. Still a life without electricity or indoor plumbing in the dripping Northwest is not what I dream about at nights. On the other hand the woman stuck it out and with good humor none the less even having been branded a "reader" by the neighbors when they all did "tatting" or "needlepoint". All those doilies you see in a farm house? That's a farmer's wife going slowly nuts.

Anyway the descriptions of the Kettles is wonderful.

3 out of 5 stars Depressing.......2007-02-16

What a hard life the author had when she was first married. Although she makes light of her dificulties by joking, I can see that it was terrible and I found the book most depressing.
It must also have been dificult to live in those years when everyone was so racist and unaccepting of different sorts of people. I'm surprised that she was comfortable being with the Kettles and uncomfortable with the Hicks. Based on her feelings of the native population I would think it was the other way around!
I recommend reading this book for the picture it gives of the era that it covers.

As a homeschooling Mom of 2 small girls, we do A LOT of reading together. What a treat to have someone else do the reading for me every once in a while! Kelsey Grammer, John Lithgow, Walter Matthau, Ted Danson, Billy Crystal and other famous voices certainly do an OUTSTANDING job! The stories are unabridged, which makes it easy to follow along with your own Dr Seuss library. Between the talented author and the unquestionably talented actors, you just can't go wrong...what a great gift to any child or Dr. Seuss fan of any age! My daughters love this CD, and are always asking for one more story or the other disc. SO...we purchased the Green Eggs and Ham CD set today, and are very eager to see how it compares to this fun compilation!

5 out of 5 stars My Daughter's Favorite Book by Dr. Seuss.......2004-09-08

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish was her pick as the best of the books by Dr. Seuss.

One of the appeals of this book is that it is relatively easy to learn to read, yet has much more variety than most other early readers. So your child will feel like she or he has accomplished a lot with reading this book, which is correct.

The title gives the key to why this book works well as an early reader. One word is changed at a time, with a clear illustration next to it. Most children will read the illustrations like a rebus and later associate the words with the sounds of the name for the pictures. At some point, they begin reading from the words. Very nice!

Here's another sequence: "black fish blue fish old fish new fish."

Then, when he moves on, he uses simple rhymes: "This one has a little star. This one has a little car."

Next, he progresses to substituting "some" for "fish" and adding a single verb to make a sentence as in "Some are read . . . . Some are old."

So almost any child can soon begin to read along with few errors in the first 2 or 3 pages. Whenever the child can go no more, you can just keep going. With repetition, more of the book becomes memorized and the process continues.

There is another reward for you and your child: The book also previews many of the wonderful characters and rhyming schemes that appear in other Dr. Seuss books. As a result, it will be easier to get started reading those books. You will feel like you are seeing an old friend again.

You can also use each rhyme to take off on your own speculations. Our daughter used to love to come up with alternative rhymes that fit the pictures.

Books like this one make it great fun to be either a parent or a child. In some cases, this book will be there for you in both roles over 20 to 40 years!

      Product Description

This is the first book of a series of previously unpublished patterns for the reader to recreate and enjoy. By breaking down the design to its simplest form, you will discover that you can create very complicated and magnificent patterns. As we describe each egg from beginning pencil lines to the final dye bath, the symbolism and color meanings will also be explained.

4 out of 5 stars good patterns, but you'll need more than this.......2004-02-22

If you are a beginner to the art of pysanky, as I am, this book will not be enough to get you started. It gives brief directions and gets straight to the patterns, which are after all the point of this book. The cover has color photos of all the egg designs presented in the book, the inside cover has black-and-white pictures of the sides of the eggs; the pages of the book contain only black and white line drawings of the patterns. The patterns are given step-by-step with a line drawing for each step, but as a beginner I still find some of them a bit confusing. However, they are lovely designs and for more experienced decorators (which I hope to be very soon) I'm sure the patterns and instructions are adequate. Throughout the book, where a certain pattern is used, its symbolism is briefly explained. So, if you are a beginner, get a good starter book - I am finding Jane Pollak's Decorating Eggs to be an excellent learning and inspiration resource.

      3 out of 5 stars A So-so answer to an Egg-cellent Question.......2005-12-06

"How does an egg like this grow into a chicken like this?" Selman's book provides a detailed answer to what is surely a common question, beginning with a look inside the hen's body and even illustrating the stages of development of the chick within the egg.

Egg to Chick is supposedly geared towards ages 4-8, but it seems that younger kids would have trouble with some of the vocabulary (sperm, embryo) and concepts (dogs and humans start out as eggs; fish and human embryos look alike), while older kids might be bored with the simple cadence of the writing. Nonetheless this might be a nice resource for families that raise chickens or for exploring comparative anatomy in a relatively simple way.

3 out of 5 stars LAST CALL.... FOR FLIGHT 21.......2000-10-02

Chicks don't fly at 21 days....they hatch! This is a very good book for the study of the life cycle of chickens. We used this to help our children (and us) to know what in the world was going on in those eggs.We have incubated and let the hens sit on the eggs. My advice: let the mommas do it. CAREFUL ! Roosters are lurking in this book ! You know what that means? Your children will if your not careful !Which came first, the chicken or the egg? I know, do you ? I JUST LOVE THE PICTURES OF THE GROWING CHICK IN THE EGG. SEE YA' AT THE HEN HOUSE.
