I thought this book was good...not really my taste, but it was well written. I needed it for a book report and It got sent to me by amazon quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent- tear-jerking too :( .......2007-08-03

Max and Kevin were complete opposites. Max; "the oversized teen, who had often been labeled as dumb". Kevin or -Freak- rather, had a disease that stopped his outsides from growing, but aloud his insides to grow normally. Kevin was also extremely bright and seemed to have the brain of Einstein. One summer day, Freak moves in down the street form Max, and soon they became inseparable friends. With Kevin on Max's shoulder they become "Freak the Mighty". Kevin being the brains, and Max the protection and transportation. Unfortunately however, Max's father who had been in prison for killing his wife was released. He kidnapped Max from the cozy down-under (the basement of his grandparent's house) and was from then on, on the run. Will Max escape from the clutches of his father..."Killer Kane"?
Will Freak's disease end up killing him?

In my opinion, the author's main message was to say how important friendship is. Both Max, and Kevin were loyal friends, and that's how true friends should be. Good friends help each other in times of need, and give each other hope. If I were to rate this book, I would give it 5 stars. This book has the perfect twist of friendship, sadness, hope, and even humor, which gives it a very satisfying plot. If you read this book and enjoy it, I recommend you read Max The Mighty, the sequel to Freak The Mighty, which has the same spark, if not, better, spark.

What a great story about 2 teenagers helping each other through a very difficult time. Funny, dramatic, thought-provoking, and wonderful! Also see the great movie of it, "The Mighty," with Sharon Stone and Kieran Culkin. Super!

3 out of 5 stars Freak The Mighty.......2007-06-13

Freak is small and disabled but has all the brains. Max is tall and strong but dumb. Even though freak is disabled he never lets people clown on him. Together they are known as freak the mighty.

This book takes place in a small town in about 1990. One main character is freak is disabled and is short but has a big brain. Another main character is max. People call him names like dumb, slow, and stupid. When they become best of friends they are known as freak the mighty. In the book Maxs dad goes to prison for murder but brakes out and kid naps him.

My favorite parts of the book are when freak and max go on secret missions and adventures together, so freak think thinks in his mind.

This book is about to friend named freak and max. Freak is disabled and short but does not let any one get him down. Max is tall, strong but not that smart. I think that the theme of the story is even though some on is disabled they can be good friend and fun to hang out with.

I liked the book freak the mighty because it is a fun book to read. I would not change any thing about the book. You should read this book because it is about two kids freak and max that don't let any one get them down and have each others backs.

Freak the Mighty Summary
By: Brandon Cooke

Freak the Mighty is a story of two kids who are challenged in life and meet when Freak moves in next door to max. They become friends and are soon known as freak the mighty. Freak is deformed, he has stopped growing on the outside but his organs are still growing normally. Where Freak is very smart, Max is considered mentally challenged. Max is always growing and is very big for his age. So Freak would sit on his shoulders and consider himself freak the mighty because of how he felt. Freak teaches Max about King Arthur and they go on imaginary adventures together. Max finds out that his father was released from prison. Freak believes that he will be given a mechanical body someday because of the growth of his organs will inevitably kill him someday. But on Christmas Eve Max is abducted by his father and tied up and held against his will. Will Freak rescue Max from this threatening fate? Will Max be able to put his father behind bars because Max witnessed what he really did? Can Freak overcome his illness? Freak The mighty is a moving and adventurous story of those who are challenged in life but complete tasks of the impossible. I highly recommend this book because of its great story line, Morals and attention to detail. It's a memorable story about friendship.

5 out of 5 stars I will soon be a Vegan Freak.......2007-09-27

I have been transitioning into veganism for a little while now (slowly removing dairy and eggs instead of doing it all at once). One of my biggest concerns with becoming a vegan is what my friends and family will say. Not that I care about their opinions, because it will not change my own, but I just didn't want to hear all of thier comments constantly. All of my friends have been supportive, but family members "who know it all" have been lecturing me on protein, vitamins, health, the "fact" that animals who are part of the egg and dairy industries "are not harmed" (which any vegan will tell you is not the case AT ALL), etc. This book gives you a lot of information about ways to deal with the comments of others and gives you a lot of knowledge about the different aspects of being a vegan (why vegans doing wear leather, wool, etc). I also like how they put in own personal experiences. This was a good book and I highly recommend it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Vegan Intro.......2007-08-06

Being a newly minted Vegan, I was looking for a book that would give me a good introduction to the subject without burying me in propaganda. Vegan Freak is that and more. The authors are funny, intelligent, and well versed in the trials and tribulations of being a Vegan in modern consumer society. They give excellent tips, suggestions, and advice for dealing with family/friends/co-workers who may not understand your choice; all with a friendly and accessible narrative tone. Despite a somewhat brisk discussion of the moral basis for Veganism and the logical arguments that support it, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to adopt a Vegan lifestyle or who has questions on the subject.

2 out of 5 stars not sure what about this one........2007-05-02

I read this book and liked it's style and the information was helpful but I feel like the authors need to revise this book and try a little harder to cut down on the opinions and repetitive info and instead pack in more of their valuable advise. I'm not sure how to better explain this but I will illustrate how I read this book. I Read the whole thing really fast first of all, and when i got to the end I was shocked it was over. So I thought maybe I missed a chapter or two. So I skimmed back through it searching for the lost chapters, but they were not there. I was so desperate for more that I read the appendix over and over searching for more info. I guess I fell that this book is incomplete

5 out of 5 stars Being vegan doesn't mean you're a hippie and have to smell!.......2007-03-11

Being a vegan is a way of life and doesn't mean that you'll go around stinking, and that no one will like you. Being vegan is a life choice just like one that you make when you decide to get out of bed and/or brush your teeth. Going to college in a "hippie" town and running in to quite a few vegans this book made the life choice / life change easier for me when I was vegan. I still use this book for helpful insight and advice even though I am not vegan right now. Being vegan does not mean that you will go broke at the grocery store either. One of the first things out of people's mouths is - "I bet you spend a fortune on food!" It's not true. There are a lot of options out there for vegans to live on a budget and still be vegan, happy and healthy.

I support all outlooks on eating and I can say for myself that while I was totally vegan I was the most happy and most healthy that I've ever been. I hardly ever got sick, and could eat when I was hungry without worrying about carbs and calories all the time. I could munch on asparagus and make meals for potlucks that everyone was dying to know the recipe for.

Being Vegan is not easy - this book definitely points that out. Being something that is outside of the "norm" that we all see around us is definitely something that takes a while to get used to. By reading this book that "change" into being vegan is much easier. I've bought this book and shared it with people who were just interested on knowing exactly what being vegan meant.

I plan on going back to being "100% vegan" soon and I will use this book as one of my main sources of entertainment and pleasure reading.

3 out of 5 stars I'm Glad I didn't Buy It........2007-02-25

I was really eager to read this. Sometimes I feel very alone in my veganism so I checked this book out. All I learned was don't make veganism sound difficult so non-vegans think they could never do it. (Like whining you miss cheese.) The book was repetitive and referenced a lot of other books during the reading. Now, that is appreciated when there is recommended further reading at the back of the book but not throughout the read. Also, plain English writing (how we speak aloud) is annoying in a book. I couldn't get past that.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Really, a 3.5... *spoilers ahead* .......2007-03-08

I've been following this series for awhile now. At one point, a few years ago, I was so addicted that I had to order the 3 books that had been released in the UK because I couldn't wait for the US versions to come out. So, it was with much pleasure and anticipation that I sat down to read books 10, 11, and 12 in one sitting.

I have to say that Book 12 left me a bit disappointed. At the end of the book, Shan has the main character go back in the time & prevent himself from making the mistake of kidnapping Madam Octa. Since Darren manages to stop himself from kidnapping the spider, he never makes the deal with Mr. Crepsley & ends up leading a normal, healthy, life as a human. This, of course, means that Darius is probably never born (because Annie wouldn't be a single mom at 16). But there is a possibility that others still die the same way -- Mr. Crepsley, Shancus... their fate may be the same, but Darren won't be around to witness it.

I understand that Shan felt that this was the only way to resolve the convoluted system of "Destiny" that he created in the past 11 books. However, in the process, it left the reader high and dry because the ending basically told us that the stories we had just invested time and effort in for the past few years didn't happen. Sure, they would still happen in a way -- but these trials and tribulations wouldn't fall on a boy named Darren Shan. Some other, nameless, person would step up to take over Darren's destiny. And we're just supposed to leave to our imagination how the universe righted itself & who was affected by the change in the end. Will the ones who died still end up dead? Will this new child (whoever it is) end up sacrificing themselves & floating to Paradise (as Darren predicts he/she would) or, maybe, they cannot resist the lure that Mr. Tiny places on them.

The biggest issue I have with this ending is that it makes us wonder -- why'd we read the past 11 books if they were all irrelevant? This is the equivalent of Shan ending the series with a scene where Darren wakes up from a nightmare and finds out it was all a dream. I invested time and emotion in Darren's Saga. And now you're telling me that it wasn't Darren's saga, at all. And, perhaps, even the people mentioned in the book might not have had anything to do with it, because Darren changed the course of history.

Another thing that bothered me were the holes in the whole "fate vs. destiny" situation. Darren managed to overcome the two set futures by killing himself and Steve. However -- why didn't he just have the power to "Just Say No" to Des Tiny's edicts? Why not just say, "Thanks, but no thanks, I choose my own fate and I don't want to rule the world." Particularly when he'd already been shown the consequences his actions if he did get mixed up with Mr. Tiny's vision. The author was feeding us two messages: (1) You control on your fate in a manner of speaking and should choose the path of good, but (2) If Mr. Tiny makes you evil, there's nothing you can do about it. I was like, "huh??" Not to mention -- Mr. Tiny had waaaayyy too much power & I didn't like the fact that he wasn't facing any consequences for his actions.

Also, why did Darren go the Lake of Souls... he was a decent guy and sacrificed himself. I didn't buy the whole "guilt" thing. Other vampires had probably done much more bad things in their long lives (like Mr. Crepsley) and they went straight to Paradise. It made no sense that Darren -- a half-Vampire who constantly did the ethical thing -- would end up in the Lake of Souls for hundreds of thousands of years & there would be no force in the universe that could right that mistake. Again, giving Mr. Tiny way too much power.

Basically, I give this 3.5 stars because the series, as a whole, is excellent. And, naturally, if you read Books 1-11, you have to read this finale. However, this particular reader was left unsatisfied with the resolution of the series. I was hoping for more closure.

5 out of 5 stars Sink your teeth into it!.......2007-02-27

Darren Shan is just an ordinary school boy, until his friend Alan Morris finds a flyer advertising the Cirque Du Freak, an illegal freak show. There he sees Alexander Ribs, a man with bones like rubber, the Wolf-Man, Truska, the bearded lady, Rhamus Twobellies, and many more. But he also saw Mr. Crepsley and his amazing poisonous performing spider, Madam Octa, who leads Darren to becoming a half-vampire! Through books 1-11, Darren makes the trek to Vampire Mountain, no small feat for one his age, endures the Trials of Initiation, fails, becomes a ruler of the vampire clan, and has his best friend in the entire world, Steve (Leopard) Leonard turn against him.
Now, Darren finally returns to his home city many years later - where Steve has sworn to wreak havoc - to find that his now grown-up younger sister, Annie, is married to Steve, but she doesn't love him. Darren doesn't know this yet. He wants to kill Darius, Steve's son, in revenge for Steve killing his other friend's son, Shancus. But then Steve reveals who is Darius's mother, Annie, and if Darren killed Darius, he would be killing his own nephew. And cackling like a demon, he left Darren and his friends in the blood-drenched night.
Then, Darren is off to fight. It is time for The War of the Scars, either Darren or Steve dies, whoever triumphs will become the Lord of the Shadows, and destroy the world. Darren, wounded and burning, finally stabs Steve's shriveled forgery of a heart, but when an ancient prophecy is revealed by a mysterious little man called Mr. Tiny and his witch-daughter Evanna, Darren is so upset, he kills himself. He and Steve both drop into the Lake of Souls. What happens here?
This book made me realize the horrors of real life, and if you start reading this series, you will NOT put them down! Dare to be scared? Sons of Destiny is a page-turner, awesome and grueling, it will leave any reader hungry for more. (Ages 11-16)

5 out of 5 stars The War Is Over.......2007-02-16

This book is the last book of the Cirque Du Freak books and the very best. Darren finds out that Steve's son is his own nephew, and that Steve blooded him so Darren does something very dangerous. He tries to turn him from vampanese to vampire. Steve captures all of his friends at the Cirque Du Freak show so Darren tries to rescue them. The rescue turns into a blood bath. Darren follows Steve to settle this once and for all. They end up both dying and, going to the Lake of Souls. Many hundreds of years later Darren gets fished out and gets to go into the past as a little person and gets to change his own destiny and goes to paradise.
The author really captured my interest at the beginning of the book because it was constant fighting. My favorite part was when Darren let Steve kiss him to chant destiny. It was my favorite part because I didn't think destiny could be changed. People who like constant fighting should read this book. This book has a lot, lot of fighting.

A wild, often horrifying, novel about freaks, geeks and other aberrancies of the human condition who travel together (a whole family of them) as a circus. It's a solipsistic funhouse world that makes "normal" people seem bland and pitiful. Arturo the Aqua-Boy, who has flippers and an enormous need to be loved. A museum of sacred monsters that didn't make it. An endearing "little beetle" of a heroine. Sort of like Tod Browning's Freaks crossed with David Lynch and John Irving and perhaps George Eliot -- the latter for the power of the emotions evoked.

Book Description

Geek Love is the story of the Binewskis, a carny family whose mater- and paterfamilias set out–with the help of amphetamine, arsenic, and radioisotopes–to breed their own exhibit of human oddities. There’s Arturo the Aquaboy, who has flippers for limbs and a megalomaniac ambition worthy of Genghis Khan . . . Iphy and Elly, the lissome Siamese twins . . . albino hunchback Oly, and the outwardly normal Chick, whose mysterious gifts make him the family’s most precious–and dangerous–asset.

As the Binewskis take their act across the backwaters of the U.S., inspiring fanatical devotion and murderous revulsion; as its members conduct their own Machiavellian version of sibling rivalry, Geek Love throws its sulfurous light on our notions of the freakish and the normal, the beautiful and the ugly, the holy and the obscene. Family values will never be the same.

I greatly enjoyed this story. If you like books like Fight Club, you will too. I have a feeling that this is the sort of book that you either love it or hate it. It was a little slow to begin with but I stuck with it to the end and was glad that I did because overall it is worth the read. I liked it so much that I purchased another copy to be shipped to my brother in Florida. This story was surprisingly and refreshingly different. I would advise parents to read it before allowing their teenagers to due to the fact that there is some adult content. I would rate it a P-13 borderline R but some readers may feel differently so don't take my word for it, go read it yourself! I will be looking for more books by Katherine Dunn!

4 out of 5 stars strangely odd , but just as lovely even odder.......2007-06-30

Read this book years ago, and I read it fast not being able to put the book down for a day and half. I had to finish it, and hating that it came to an end. This book has stayed with me for some reason that I can't name. Don't think you are going to read a book about the life of circus folks, you are going into depths that can frightened you and make you throw you head back and laugh all at the same time

5 out of 5 stars A PERFECT DESIGN.......2007-06-22

Okay, if you are on Amazon to look for a new book to read, and decide to read the reviews first, than listen up. Read the "synopsis", see what it's about? Yeah, it's not a novel about Nerds who fall in love; it's a fantastical novel about a family that is designed to be full of horror, wonderment, shock and awe, literally. If you cannot stomach reading descriptions of deformities, or people who are cult followers to the nth degree, or talk of injuries to both body and soul and mind, than do not buy this. If you do, than soon you will be on here reviewing this and saying "it was disgusting, and horrific, and I didn't get it" This book isn't for the faint of heart, or the simpleton who just wants quick read before settling into beddy-bye for the night. You must be able to wrap your head around profound, well written, scarring literature. If you choose this for a readers circle, or book club, make sure that everyone has an open mind, you don't want to choose this and than have a bunch of people look at you like you grew fins and a hunchback.
We all have handicaps, physical or mental. I know that I can personally blame my parents for the struggle and afflictions I have had in my life, they might not have designed me that way, but they sure as heck didn't think before they acted. I fell in love with this book because I fell in love with the sublime mystery of It all, I couldn't wait to see how it unfolded, and how it came to be that Oly was on her own looking after both her daughter and her mother, and neither knew who she was. I will forever treasure this book.

5 out of 5 stars And I'd figured I'd come to the end of being amazed........2007-06-05

"And I'd figured I'd come to the end of being amazed. Run out of it, like you'd run out of sugar. But when I saw you lovely girls I thought to myself, maybe there's more to life yet."

An astonishing, grotesque, sharp-tongued, and lovingly written family memoir and the most entertaining work of fiction I've read in years. Reduced to archetypes, it's the story of a family struggling with its own hubris (a la the Magnificent Ambersons or Royal Tenenbaums) and a meandering reflection on small-town America -- an unsentimental road-trip comedy dotted with soft drawls, murder, prostitution, tigers, telekinesis, a cult of amputees, and lots of security guards. Think Willie Nelson and the Quay brothers collaborating in the milieu of HBO's Carnivale, and you have a rough idea of the premise and aesthetic of the novel.

Though it's thoroughly entertaining, the flaws are stark: at about the two-thirds mark, Dunn steers the storytelling away from a first-person recollection to 'journalist's notes,' a decision which, depending on how you frame it, drags down the pace considerably or is a judicious bit of editing that compresses the formidable challenge of exposition and actually speeds the action. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but it's there and it gives Dunn the opportunity to drop in a few smart epigraphs that would otherwise have been non sequiturs. Some characters are painstakingly and hilariously dressed but given few lines; while I hoped that some of them would have more presence in the story arc, I know that if my obituary is to be published, I want Dunn to write it.

Something else to keep in mind as you read this book: a majority of the action happens between characters who are children, at most adolescents, in the 20th century. While in the 21st century, I might no longer look upon carnivals or freaks or even acts of extreme sadism in awe, Geek Love reminded me of the thrill of audacity, and that achievement on its own is amazing to me.

4 out of 5 stars One "Freaky" Book.......2007-06-05

This is a tough book to review because it is definitely weird - but not so twisted that you should pass it up. I don't go out of my way looking for books this strange, but I did enjoy it. You would have to know a person pretty well to know whether they would like it or not. It kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out where it could possibly go after starting with such a bizarre premise.

Book Description

Bedtime Erotica for Freaks (like me) is written in the same distinctive style that has won Lexy many loyal fans but these stories are for sexual connoisseurs. Don’t let the word ‘Freaks’ put you off – it is simply a description of people who find eroticism in the 'unusual' like Lexy herself. This book starts off with a bang in Vanessa, a woman who lives out all her sexual fantasies and the no-holds-barred action continues until the very last page! Amanda, enslaves the man of her dreams while in disguise. Geraldine, a prostitute, has seen and done it all, she is going through the motions until Tiffany brings the joy back into her jaded existence. Indra ignores the basic rule of her job as a chatline operator and ventures into forbidden territory with a client. Nectar is too much woman for one man, so she has two. Antonia has a voracious sexual appetite that must be fed constantly and Samantha uses her sexual expertise to wreck as many homes as she can. These stories of women who follow their sexual destinies and damn everyone else will entice and titillate.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money!.......2007-08-14

This book was the most poorly written, poorly edited book I have read in a long time - maybe forever! This author should read a few REAL erotica authors, like Emma Holly and Lora Leigh.

This book was such a disappointment and such a WASTE OF MONEY!. I love erotica. However, this was just trash. I could only read about 1/2 of the book. Then I threw it away! I would never give this book to someone. I would be insulting their intelligence. For those who thought this book was good - do yourself a favor and read some Emma Holly or Lora Leigh and find out what erotic fantasies are really about!

1 out of 5 stars Not thrilled.......2007-07-31

This just isn't a book I could get into. The prose is littered with italics for emphasis and I found that very annoying. Also Harper's personal commentary at the ends of the stories was annoying, too.

This IS erotica, but there's MUCH better stuff out there. I recommend any of the "Best Women's Erotica" books or anything by Pretty Things Press over this drivel.

4 out of 5 stars ?.......2007-06-02

The author is definately black and is from the UK. I wasn't quite expecting that, but the book was HOT none the less. Just some of the slang and spelling was different. Bedtime Erotica, also by the same author was a tad bit better, if I had to choose one, I'd pick Bedtime Erotica over this, or just get both like I did. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars review.......2007-06-01

The book was okay, not as good as a Zane novel but okay none the less.

4 out of 5 stars Hot.......2007-04-09

If you are a fan of Erotic literature this is definately a page turner! I enjoyed Amanda's and Indra's stories the best. I would recommend this book. I plan to purchase her book Bedtime Erotic.

It isn't always easy to get a high school girl to read, but my daughter found one of these books in her school library and she was hooked. She devours a book in just a few days and comes back ready for more. We will be purchasing all of them and now she is looking forward to the next collection by the same author. Amazon Rocks!

5 out of 5 stars Freak Show.......2007-02-16

This book is a great one to read if you like freaks at a circus. There are a lot of weird but incredible things in this book like the Snake Boy or Madam Octa or even Gertha Teeth. The Snake Boy has scales all over his body and even slithers like a snake. Madam Octa is a red, green and purple spider and in one bite she can kill a human. But the weirdest thing was that she was trained to obey a special flute. When Mr. Crepsley blew a certain tune she would do some incredible trick. Gertha Teeth was even better; she could bite anything. One time she bit a bunch of holes in a big radiator. She picked three volunteers to show how strong her teeth were. One guy had a sledgehammer and a chisel. The second guy had a hammer and a chisel. The third guy had a saw.
Even though this book is very good it probably needs to be read from fourth and up. It may even be a little scary for fourth graders because of the vampire and the Wolf-man. To find out what happens you have got to read this book

Anyone who loves the humorous but hair-raising horror in R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series will devour British author Darren Shan's first novel with equal zeal. Some books are born with a surrounding buzz; this one even has Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling's stamp of approval: "Fast-paced and compelling, full of satisfying macabre touches," she writes. Warner Brothers will be making it into a movie, and the rest of the series is already in the works. Given all that, you'd expect a tour de force! Really, though, Cirque Du Freak is a thrill ride that will keep even the most reluctant readers turning pages, but will never take its place in the literary canon.

Darren Shan, author and narrator, sets the book up as a true story, warning readers: "Real life's nasty. It's cruel.... Evil often wins." Indeed, evil begins to win when Darren and his buddies find a flier for "Cirque Du Freak," a traveling freak show promising performances by the snake-boy, the wolf-man, and Larten Crepsley and his giant spider, Madame Octa. Darren and his friend Steve wouldn't miss it for the world.

So, Saturday night they sneak out to the old theater, tall and dark, with broken windows. "Every act you see tonight is real," croaks Mr. Tall. "Each performer is unique. And none are harmless." That's for sure. (A werewolf bites off the hand of someone in the audience, for instance.) Things grow very serious for the two boys when Steve not only recognizes Mr. Crepsley as a famous vampire, but professes his true desire to join him! To make matters worse, the spider-obsessed Darren goes back to the old theater to steal Madame Octa so he can teach her tricks in his room. (He does, with mixed results.) The plot further coagulates as Darren is faced with some terrible decisions about what to do to save his bloodthirsty friend Steve.

Readers may be too enthralled to notice some clumsy editing (the aforementioned bitten-off hand is later referred to as an arm, Darren stops dead in his tracks when he's already stopped, etc.). They may also not notice that the boys constantly use adult-sounding expressions like "his breath stank to the high heavens," though the book is clearly set in the 21st century. If this book gets under your kids' skin (and it probably will), they're in luck--we haven't heard the last of the Saga of Darren Shan. (Ages 10 and older, not for the faint of heart) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

Darren Shan is just an ordinary schoolboy who enjoys hanging out with his three best friends. Then one day they stumble across as invitation to visit the Cirque du Freak, a mysterious freak show. Only two tickets are available, so they draw straws to see who will go. As if by destiny, Darren wins one, and what follows is his horrifying descent into the dark and bloody world of vampires. This is Darren's story.

I loved this book. If theres any book you're going to read, make it this one. I am on the nineth one now, and will soon be getting the tenth and eleventh and twelth.
Read it, you wont be disaponted.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Freak Show.......2007-07-01

Darren has always loved spiders. So when a secret freak show comes to town that advertises a performing spider, he knows he just has to go. He and his best friend Steve manage to get tickets and in the middle of the night they head to the freak show. Right away things are very creepy, from the host who knows Darren's name without asking to the wolfman who bites off a woman's hand and the robed and hooded creatures who sew the hand back on.

Despite their terror at what is happening around them, Darren and Steve stay until the end of the show. Darren is fascinated by Madame Octa, the performing spider. The man controlling her says she is a practically unknown species and she has deadly poison in her fangs. He uses a flute to calm her and make her do what he wants. Steve is more fascinated by the man controlling her than he is by the spider.

After the show, Steve stays behind and sends Darren home. Instead of going home, Darren hides to watch what happens. Steve confronts the spider tamer, stating that he is a famous vampire. He threatens to tell people unless this man will make him a vampire as well. The man refuses, stating that Steve has evil in his blood.

Darren decides that he can use this information to get what he wants. He sneaks into the freak show early one morning and steals Madame Octa, leaving a note stating he knows who and what the spider tamer is. He is excited and delighted when the spider is really his. But can he control this deadly beast? Will the vampire let him get away with stealing his pet?

I really liked the basic idea of this story. I liked the idea of a freak show full of people with real supernatural powers. I also liked that things didn't all work out well for Darren in the end. His actions ended up having consequences, which was only fair.

The writing in this story bothered me at some points, though. The author used too many exclamation points and often stated things too simply. It felt sometimes like he was talking down to the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Cirque Du Freak Best Book Ever.......2007-06-18

Cirque Du Freak is one of the best books I have ever read. The author did a fantastic job describng all the detail. This book is about a boy named Darren Shan who gets a ticket from one of his friends to go to a mysterious freak show with his best friend Steve Leopard. They snuck out of the house to go see the freak show. When they got to the freak show Steve noticed that there was a man that he knew- a man from a comic book- a vampire! Steve wants to be a vampire too, so after the show he goes to talk to the man. Little did Steve know that Darren was spying on him. Later in the book Steve gets bitten by a spider Darren stole from someone. There is only one way Darren can save his best friend from dying. This book is awesome-you will not stop reading it. Darren Shan will have you glued to your seat in suspense.

5 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-06-16

This actually is a pretty good book. I haven't read any of the other books by this author, but I still enjoyed this book. The beginning of the book wasn't the best, i thought, but after a certain meeting to save a friend, it got interesting. I especially liked the later books in this series. It was worth reading a few boring chapters to get 11 1/2 books worth of action.

5 out of 5 stars Best horror book EVER.......2007-05-31

The name of the book I read was Cirque du Freak: A Living Nightmare written by: Darren Shan. This book is about two kids, Darren and Steve, who go to a freak show late at night that change their lives forever. Darren Shan and Steve Leonard are ordinary kids. Another friend brings a flier advertising Cirque du Freak, a freak show. Steve sneaks out to buy tickets for him and 3 friends but the ticket salesman only sells 2 tickets per flier. Only 2 can go, and 2 will be left behind. This book takes place in several cities in present-day.
This book was for entertainment. This is a great book. I would recommend you to read this book and the whole Cirque du Freak series. The reason this is a good book is it has great characters and it leaves you wondering what's going to happen in the next chapter so you keep reading. That is why I would recommend this book.

If your searching for a comppelling, and entertaining book, then Cirque Du Freaks Lord of Shadows is the perfect book for you. Just like the previous 10 books in this series, there is a twist and turn at the end of every chapter. This book is about Darren Shan, a half vampire prince who is searchiing for Steve Leanord, his ex-best friend. Darren is out to kill him so that the vampires win the War of Scars. By doing this Darren will become the Lord of Shadows. The question is, is this a good thing? However, Darren insists that he would never kill for the fun of it. Darren believes that it's possible to win the War of Scars and not be a endless killer. Evanna keeps telling him that it is impossible to change the course of the future. Will Darren Shan be able to kill Steve Leonard, win the War of Scars, and not turn into a insane killer? Read this amazing book that will keep you guessing.

Book Description

Have you ever been called a freak or a geek? Have you ever felt like one? Luke Jackson is 13 years old and has Asperger Syndrome. Over the years Luke has learned to laugh at such names but there are other aspects of life which are more difficult. Adolescence and the teenage years are a minefield of emotions, transitions and decisions and when a child has Asperger Syndrome, the result is often explosive.

Luke has three sisters and one brother in various stages of their adolescent and teenage years but he is acutely aware of just how different he is and how little information is available for adolescents like himself.

Drawing from his own experiences and gaining information from his teenage brother and sisters, he wrote this enlightening, honest and witty book in an attempt to address difficult topics such as bullying, friendships, when and how to tell others about AS, school problems, dating and relationships, and morality.

Luke writes briefly about his younger autistic and AD/HD brothers, providing amusing insights into the antics of his younger years and advice for parents, carers and teachers of younger AS children. However, his main reason for writing was because "so many books are written about us, but none are written directly to adolescents with Asperger Syndrome. I thought I would write one in the hope that we could all learn together."

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had read this sooner........2007-07-31

I saw this book several years ago when my son was being tested for the third time, and I had come to believe that he had Asperger Syndrome. I thought, at that time, that I would get this book in a few years when he was a teen. I didn't think it would apply to the 9 year old that he was then. Once again, we got a muddled mess of diagnoses and recommendations, but nothing that really got to the heart of what my son was dealing with. I filed the report away and continued working with my son based on the research I was finding on AS. My son has made remarkable progress, but still struggles in some areas. I recently read Freaks, Geeks and Asperger Syndrome: A User Guide to Adolescence
, now that my son is a teen, and gave it to him. I found so much of my son in Luke. I only wish I had read this book when I first saw it. I would have handed it to the psychotherapist who refused to diagnose my son because, in her opinion, autism is a "terrible thing" that I wouldn't want my son to be labeled. Luke didn't surprise us with anything since we have been living it for 13 years, but it encouraged my son to read Luke's insight and know that it's really ok to be himself. Like my son, Luke is intelligent and charming. I am recommending this book to my daughter, because my 19 month old grandson has many of the same traits that my son had at that age. My grandson is just now beginning the testing process, and I'm hoping that there has been enough progress in the understanding of autism for him to get an accurate diagnosis. I highly recommend this book to anyone who lives with, teaches, works with or is in a position to diagnose a person with Asperger Syndrome. It also has practical information for preteens and teens with AS.

3 out of 5 stars Not my first choice.......2007-06-05

Maybe my expectations were a little too high.

I was looking for a book to offer practical socializing advise for our 13 year old AS son as well as a book that would help him understand the issues that he deals with. This book was a little helpful and Luke does have a sense of humor but I did not feel comfortable sharing this book with my son. However, I do recommend "Can I tell you about Aspergers" by Jude Welton. I shared this book with our son and it was like a "light-bulb" went off in his head. I also recommend "Can I tell you about Aspergers" as a source to share with teachers and compassionate classmates (approximately 8 to 15 years old) as a way of explaining the responses of their AS student or classmate.

Some of the phrasing that Luke used in "Freaks, Geeks and ..." was a bit difficult to understand. This is probably due to the fact that Luke is British so some terms that he used were not familiar to this American reader.

In conclusion, I want to congratulate Luke for writing this book and sharing his story with others. This is probably a great accomplishment for him and his mother should be very proud of the continued support that she gives to her children. This book might be useful for parents to read but I would recommend borrowing it verses buying it (or buy used). I would highly recommend that you read the book "Can I tell you about Aspergers" as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-14

My four year old niece was just diagnosed with Asperger's so I have been reading anything I can get my hands on to understand her. This book is very well written by a 13 year old boy. His sense of humor and his descriptions of what it is like to see the world from a different point of view is quite informative. Most of us NTs (I learned that that is the description used by those who are not on the autism spectum) have an idea that people with this syndrome cannot relate to the world and the people in it. While it may be difficult for them, this boy proves otherwise and was such an encouragement and helped me understand a little more what my niece might be going through as she lives in this world. This book is definately recommended for anyone who would like to understand what life is like for anyone with this syndrome.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellant book!.......2007-05-03

This book is written by a 13 year old boy with aspergers syndrome. The writing is profoundly witty while being informative. The author, Luke Jackson, lives in a lively home with six siblings, some of whom are also on the autism spectrum. This is the most uplifting book I have read in some time.I couldn't put it down! I have a long list of friends waiting to borrow it. This book is a must read for educators, parents, professionals, kids (and adults) with aspergers.
