Book Description
Roberto is excited about the paper mouse he made in school, until Amy asks, "Does it do anything?" Roberto isn't sure, so he leaves the mouse on his window sill and goes to bed. Before long his apartment building is quiet, but Roberto can't fall asleep. So he gets up to look out the window and sees Archie's cat being chased by a big, snarling dog! Roberto doesn't know what to do, but fate steps in and an unlikely hero comes to the cat's rescue.
"...a combination of acrylic painting and collage has never been more effectively employed than in this quiet tale." -The Horn Book

Great First Book!.......2000-07-11
This book contains easy to remember, key words that are repeated through out the book. The simple story kept my daughter's attention and the words were simple enough for her to learn to read on her own, yet challenging enough for her to feel proud of herself.
WHAT A GREAT FIRST BOOK TO READ ON YOUR OWN!

1, 2, 3 to the Zoo (The World of Eric Carle)
ASIN: 0689803788 |
Book Description
A little boy's cat is missing, and he embarks on a fantastic round-the-world quest to find his lost pet. Along the way, he meets lots of interesting people and sees many beautiful members of the cat family, including lions and tigers and panthers. But over and over again he has to say "This is not my cat!" until at last he finds the cat he's looking for -- who has a delightful surprise for him.
Eric Carle's simple, repetitive text and distinctive cut-paper illustrations make this modern classic a book to treasure.
Customer Reviews:
another of my toddlers favorites-so much to learn about felines.......2007-06-18
This book is adorable. Yes the words are very simple (I have pretty much memorized it). However, the illustrations show so much more of the story. We talk about all the different cats (lion, bobcat, mountain lion, leopard, panther, cheetah, tiger, long haired domestic (probably persian), and his cat is a short haired domestic grey tiger (like ours is) with 6 kittens (which we like to count)) We also talk about the other animals in the book (horse, donkey, camel, squirl, etc). And we do the signs for "cat" and "bird". We also sometimes talk about the people in the book. She loves looking at the pictures and talking about the "kittys".
Great book for both toddler and new reader.......2007-03-20
This book has made it back in to the rotation at my house and it's being well loved by both my almost-2 year old son and my very beginning reader (4.5 years). The repetitive and simple text that bores adults is perfect for a new reader. My daughter is so thrilled to be able to read the book herself and she's learned several new words from this book alone. My son loves looking at all the pictures and saying the names of each of the cats and the sounds of any other animals that are feature in the wordly travels. (lion, leopard (in the tree), panther, cougar, tiger, cheetah, Persian if I'm remembering them all correctly). To answer the person who posted about not understanding the story - cats often disappear when they're about to have a littler of kittens.
My daughter loves this book.......2007-01-09
My daughter who is 6, just adores this book. It's a simple read, and because of that, it gave her much confidence in her reading ability. She rented this book from her school library in September, and has rented it over and over again. Luckily for her, "Santa" brought it on Christmas Day, so she doesn't have to rent it anymore.
If you have a child who loves Cats, and is a beginner reader, this may be the book for her/him.
Pointless!.......2006-09-09
I really enjoy Eric Carle books, BUT this one, NOT SO MUCH!! It goes on and on, "Are you my cat? Are you my cat??......." And then finally at the end...it is his cat and there are several?? I am confused!! I think it would have been better if he had given the names of all the different kind of cats (since they were all different and from several countries). That would have made more sense, and it would have been a teaching point. I refuse to read this one to my girls at bedtime.....it just doesn't make any sense. Don't waste your money.
Adventuresome Choice! My Baby Loves It! .......2006-07-01
HAVE YOU SEEN MY CAT? is now a favorite at our house. It did not excite me when I received it as a shower gift. I said something polite, and thought that we would not get much use out of it. I was not wild about Eric Carle's collage-based pictures, and the very simple text seemed dull. However, I am not the audience for this book. My 10-½ month old baby tells me that HAVE YOU SEEN MY CAT? is a lot of fun! Reading it at his speed has taught me to love it too!
I am also happy to note that an older baby we know, close to two years old, also likes this book. So it is going to be a good book for a while!
The illustrations are very colorful, and overall a little more detailed than THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR, the book that taught me to love Eric Carle's work. They look like collages with details added in crayon and pencil. My baby loves these pictures. I think it is the combination of color, simple lines and detail.
The text initially seems way too simple. The question and reply "Have you seen my cat?" and "This is not my cat!" are repeated nine times in the book. At the end, of course, the boy finds his cat and says, "This is my cat!" This initially seemed insanely dull, but Carle is an artist, and there is method to his madness.
If you just focus on the words, HAVE YOU SEEN MY CAT? is monotonous. However, there is a lot of room here to talk about what we are seeing. If you follow the story told in the pictures, you see that the boy takes a trip around the world looking for his cat. The people we ask for the cat are: a businessman, an American cowboy, a Mexican man on a burro, a South American Indian man, two African women, an Arab in the desert, a man from India who looks to be a farmer, a Persian prince, and finally a man in a park with his wife and child. Each person directs us to a cat. Before we find the boy's cat, we see (I think) a lion, a bobcat, a cougar, a jaguar, a black leopard, a cheetah, a tiger, and a Persian cat. (I had to go read up on kinds of cats and where they are found.) Eventually we find the boy's cat, a big mama cat with six kittens.
So, the book looks simple, but it has a more complex story in the pictures. I just needed to educate myself a bit to follow it and to tell it to my baby as we read it. This is not the first or last time that being a parent will drive me to better educate myself, I am sure!
I did not really start to "get" HAVE YOU SEEN MY CAT? until I read it at my baby's speed. He wanted to spend time looking at those bewitching pictures. If you talk to your baby about the whole story, there is a lot more to say. My baby loves going through the book slowly with me, looking at all the different kinds of cats as I name them for him.
My baby pulls HAVE YOU SEEN MY CAT? out of the basket to read regularly. Now that I can talk about the whole story, I like it too!

Book Description
There's a
dragon downstairs
at Sophie's house.
Every night Sophie hears him...
rattling through the cat flap,
slinking to the living room,
growing and growing
in the dark.
Mom and Dad say there's no dragon, but Sophie is determined to find him herself!
Award-winning author Hilary McKay and illustrator Amanda Harvey have created a wonderfully imaginative tale about confronting nighttime fears, a story that will delight young children everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Great Story.......2007-07-09
I loved reading this story to my child, who is 5. I love the creative ideas the little girl comes up with to deal with the dragon. It provides an excellent model of a child using her skills, resources and imagination to overcome fear. although her parents are loving and supportive, she is the one who learns to manage her fear and face her "dragon." Sweet ending, great story throughout.
another great imagination book.......2005-04-29
Hearing noises downstairs at night sounds magnified and scary to young children. The little girl in this book is ready and willing to try to get rid of what she perceives to be a dragon in the darkness of night and invents ways that might help. The art on the pages helps make the idea of a dragon in her house seem possible. Her parents are very understanding, and in the surprise ending, she conquers the "dragon". Delightful treatment of an age old story that has held good size groups of preschoolers spellbound at storytime.

Book Description
A story that helps children understand feelings of grief. Ragtail, a young mouse, has just lost his best friend. As he tries to understand what has happened, Ragtail is swept away by confusing feelings of denial, anger, and sadness. With the help of a new friend, he learns to deal with his feelins and soon discovers the comfort that comes from remembering.
Book Description
Poor Marie! Every night as she climbed into bed, she got a visit from three monsters. They only came out in darkness, so she knew they must be afraid of the light. Marie took a huge pair of scissors, and cutting the moon out of the sky, hung it right in her bedroom. No darkness, no monsters!
Her plan worked perfectly, or so she thought . . . but without a moon in the sky, the village cats were in total darkness! They began bumping into everything, and winding up in the hospital. With no cats to chase them, the mice ran amuck. Finally the king found Marie: “You must return the moon to the sky!” he said. But Marie wouldn’t agree--not until she was sure those monsters were gone. How could the king make things right for everyone? A delightful tall tale for bedtime or anytime.
Customer Reviews:
Kids love it! .......2007-07-01
When I read this story, I found it humorous but a bit too silly. Kids seem to have a form of logic we adults can't always confront. This book makes more sense and is funnier to children than one would think.
The story is that Monsters are afraid of the moon. To ward off monsters under her bed, a girl steals the moon from the sky. This makes cats bump into things and so they send a cat to guard her at night to have the moon returned.
I love the illustrations, and my son of 4 likes the story. I have read this to other kids and they all enjoy it. It's appealing to them and a great addition if you like your kid's library to have unique additions!

Book Description
A wonderful story of a small boy who wants to sail across Gitchi Gumee, which literally means 'big water.' Gitchi Gumee then continues to explain that the boy needs to learn his many moods and faces before he can safely sail in his waters.
It is an elegant story of patience and respect and Chaney Fritz's illustrations are absolutely stunning.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful adventure.......2006-11-10
Gitchi Gumee means "big water," and those of us who border on Lake Superior--one of the five Great Lakes--we know the name is perfect.
Ann Margaret Lewis tells in short verses ideal for children her story of the big waters and a little boy's curiosity about sailing it.
Kathleen Chaney Fritz's illustrations of the "human face" of the lake are wonderful. You can feel the lake's movement and season changes. Some of the pictures are so beautiful you could frame them.
"I puff out my cheeks and blow my wind," Lewis writes to show how Lake Superior can--and does change so quickly.
This story tells that the lake is home to families playing on the shore, people boating and fishing, and huge ocean freighters carrying products around the world. Many shipwrecks lie beneath the lake's waters.
Armchair Interviews says: If your child likes adventure told with great illustrations, this book is a keeper.
Milwaukee Parent Magazine.......2006-07-19
The sea becomes a young man's mentor in this beautifully rendered read. "Watch and listen closely and you will know my faces well," says Gitchi Gumee. Purposeful poetry and incredible illustrations communicate the many moods of big water, giving young readers a newfound respect.
A beautiful presented tale of a young man's remarkable journey.......2006-07-12
Gitchi Gumee by Anne Margaret Lewis is an original picturebook story enhanced with the museum quality paintings of Kathleen Chaney Fritz. The result is a beautiful presented tale of a young man's remarkable journey through the deepest, greatest bodies of water in a small sail boat. Inspired by the Native American tales of the "big water" and as exemplified in the famous "Hiawatha" saga poem of Longfellow, Gitchi Gumee showcases the adventurous young man's nautical sally into the all-knowing majesty of the open sea. Perfect for both school and community library picturebook collections, Lewis and Fristz's Gitchi Gumee is enthusiastically recommended for young readers and their parents for its superb illustrations in service to a truly inspirational and entertaining story.
