Book Description
The rags-to-riches story of Coco Chanel plays out in a wonderful picture-book biography as full of style and spirit as its heroine.
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel was always different. And she vowed to prove that being different was an advantage! Poor, skinny, and orphaned, Coco stubbornly believed that she was as good as the wealthier girls of Paris. Tapping into her creativity and her sewing skills, she began making clothes that suited her (and her pocketbook) — and soon a new generation of independent working women craved her sleek, comfortable, and practical designs. Now an icon of fashion and culture, Coco Chanel continues to inspire young readers, showing just how far a person can come with spunk, determination, and flair.
Customer Reviews:
REVELING IN CORSET-LESS CHIC .......2007-05-08
As Maurice Chevalier sang, "Thank Heaven for little girls" . . . at least we can thank Heaven for one who grew up with an independent spirit, and an imagination for corset-Less chic. Coco Chanel (1883-1971) said "In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different." The book's end papers reproduce other quotations from this fashion icon, including "Fashion is made to become unfashionable!"
Elizabeth Matthews has written a perfect Springtime fancy, and the pen & ink illustrations are every bit as lively, just right for introducing children & their very willing parents to a story about the little girl Coco who overcame her tough childhood with sewing skills learned in a Catholic orphanage. She could hold her own with snobby students of privilege and learned much by watching her peers. She later hung fabric on mannequin forms and basted in her relaxed styles which brought her fashion immortality.
The author, who graduated from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, chose Chanel as her somewhat innovative subject for children's picture books. Matthews is sure to have studied much about Coco Chanel and her clever "inventions" of the cartigan suit, and in 1926 "the little black dress." Reviewer mcHaiku isn't quite as old as the famed Chanel No. 5; it contained more than 80 ingredients, a new fact about 'parfum' for this reader. Chanel epitomizes a certain fortitude & determination that we hope young readers will try to replicate.
Perhaps they will remember another of her sayings: "INNOVATION! One cannot be forever innovating. I want to create CLASSICS."
Applause! Applause!.......2007-03-23
Children's non-fiction books have come a long way, not just in style but in subject matter. How great that Candlewick saw fit to publish a picture book biography of, astonishingly, someone the average child is probably unfamiliar with -- a woman who died long before the child was born, from a country not much studied in grade schools, representing a profession hardly mentioned at all: fashion designer. But Elizabeth Matthews, through text and pictures, has made Coco Chanel someone little girls (and open-minded little boys?) can identify with. Chanel's story is a literal rags-to-riches tale, and Matthews' enchanting art work captures her heroine's style and joie de vivre (not to mention chutzpah, to mix linguistic tags) beautifully. The cover image itself could be posted on a little girl's bedroom wall. And underneath, perhaps, the words "Dare to be Different. Like Coco."
CHARMINGLY ILLUSTRATED STORY OF THE FAMED COURTIER'S LIFE.......2007-02-28
First time children's book author/illustrator Elizabeth Matthews could haven't chosen a better subject than Coco Chanel. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design Matthews obviously has an appreciation of Chanel's numerous contributions and reflects that feeling in this charmingly illustrated story of the famed courtier's life.
Orphaned at the age of 12, Chanel and her two sisters were relegated to an orphanage. It was a mixed blessing because it was there that Chanel learned to sew. She had a lively imagination and often dreamed of being with a family again and being accepted by a society that now ignored her because she had no position, no funds.
Later, at the age of 18 she was dispatched as a charity case to Notre Dame, a finishing school. There the difference between rich and poor was more marked than ever so Chanel learned how to emulate the wealthy - she studied their manners, and the way they walked.
Upon leaving Notre Dame Chanel found work at a tailoring shop. Even then she was determined to better herself. Obviously, she couldn't afford to dress the way the rich women did, the ones she wanted to accept her. So, she made a life altering decision - she would deliberately be different. She made her own dresses, very unlike the corseted gowns the wealthy ladies wore. She carried this off with style and a touch of arrogance.
When a wealthy young man fell in love with her he bought her a small shop in Paris - the rest is fashion history.
"Different Like Coco" is not only an entertaining story for young readers but is also an example of how someone can "embrace their uniqueness and dream big."
- Gail Cooke

My sons and I have been reading this series. This has to be one of the best! My oldest read it by himself first and then asked me to read it out loud. I honestly had to stop reading at times because I was laughing so hard.

Great Book for Sailor Moon Fans.......2007-07-25
This book is great for Sailor Moon Fans. It gives a detailed description of Sailor Venus's life as a sailor scout. I will admit, there are a few mistakes, but the rest of the book makes up for those. Has great pictures and poems too. I would recomend this books to any Sailor Moon fans!
Meet Sailor Venus: Love.......2006-07-10
I liked all of the guides. This one is about Minako Aino (Mina), Sailor Venus.
I liked the questions, the powers, and transformations. The stories are read backwards like manga but sometimes it's confusing even if you read manga.
I didn't like how Minako seemed sort of obsessed with herself in this book. She talks about how beautiful she is and she even says she looks like a goddess while she's transforming or something like that.
You can find nearly all of the information in the manga and anime, so unless you're a new Sailor Moon fan then you won't really learn very much.
Also I noticed that sometimes they say exactly the same thing in different guides. Two of them were talking about how they're bad at English and they both said the same thing.
There are some mistakes, but this is a good book and you may want to read it over and over again like I did. (But you might also hate it!)
I definitely recommend this and all the other guides - but there are some pictures of them naked while they're transforming and stuff, so you may not want to give these to children.
P.S. They should make guides for Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Saturn, Chibi-Usa (Mini Moon), and Tuxedo Mask. I would buy them, and other people might like them too.
P.P.S. And they should make a DVD of Sailor Moon Stars in Japanese with English at the bottom of the screen, like they did with Season 1 and 2 (and maybe season 3 and 4, I'm not sure).
Best book I EVER have!!!.......2005-11-13
This is the best book in my book collection!So...
It has 96 pages,3 of which are advertisers for other manga books!
It has 3 sections,"Sailor Venus","Salor Venus Episode Best 5",and "Sailor Venus Encyclopedia".
The Sailor Venus section includes a guide about Mina's outfits,Sailor V stuff,Sailor Venus Transformation,Sailor Venus Attacks, and How Sailor Venus joined the team. The Episode Best 5 section spotlights 5 guides for 5 different Sailor Venus episodes. The Encyclopedia section includes Planet information,50 questions and answers to Sailor Venus,Salior Venus's greatest mottos,a battle record,a friends gallery, and poems.
I reccomend this book to kids 6+!It's a easy book to read and has tons of pictures!Very little words too! Also,it reads from right to left, like a real japanese manga comic!
Nice Book.......2005-05-29
I relly love this book. This has correct info about Sailor Venus and lots of nice pictures. It has her attacks nd transformations. If you don't own this book, you should soon!
A Fun Book.......2004-10-23
Personally, I find this book very simple to read when there's nothing else to do. It's fun to look at all the pictures, and although there is writing, there aren't so many words and paragraphs to read that it makes your head hurt. Some of the pictures are exclusive, but most of them are from the TV series, and from the movies. If you are a die-hard Sailor Moon fan, you will find this book to be rather boring and uninformative.
This book includes a showing of some of the episodes Sailor Venus has been the star of, ten pages of bits of information about Sailor Venus, some brief information about Sailor Venus when she disguised herself as Sailor V, and lots more.
My only problems with Meet Sailor Venus, are that the pictures showing picture-by-picture of her transformation, attacks, and episodes aren't really in order, so it's very easy to get confused. And I've noticed that in ALL the scout guides, in the "50 Secrets About (Name of scout)" section, the scouts rarely give away their height, and never give away their weight! It's not that important, but I just think it's silly for the author to dedicate a small section to them talking about not wanting to tell their weight.
Those aren't big problems, though, considering that there are so many parts of the book, which in-all is 93 pages long. The book is about the size of a chapter book, and like I said, there are a lot of pictures, so don't expect 93 pages worth of reading material. I would recommend this book if you are just getting into Sailor Moon, or are somewhat of a Sailor Moon fan and want something light to read while you eat a snack, or sit on the couch.
CAUTION: This book DOES contain inappropriate content. You don't want to buy this for your younger child, trust me! The youngest child I would give this book to for them to freely read would be twelve or thirteen, depending on the child.

Customer Reviews:
Shooting Star ?.......2007-01-17
This prize-winning novel for the 7-10 year old reader is a story of small town Pennsylvania in the depression years.
The characters, especially Margo Bandini and her family, are warm, chatty Italian immigrants and are very much a part of the back-porch small town.
They and other families suffer loss of family pride and desperation,as their lives are tangled in the Depression. Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 'fireside chats" offer about their only ray of hope outside of the family's optimism that they can overcome whatever happens.
Margo's father's shoe repair shop suffers when people have no money to fix their shoes. Will bad luck come from the shooting stars? Is little Charlie lost forever? Will neighbor Rosa'a father come home and help fight to save their home? Will Margo's family lose their home? No-one knows.
Then; The Assignment:to write a letter to a famous person,is given to Margo,Rosa and the school class. On the surface, the letter is just an English and Geography lesson. No-one dreams what one young girl's letter will do, until a mystery is revealed.
Five stars but..........2006-07-20
This books rates five stars since I t believe that it is a good book and a whole lot better than most children's books today. That said, I wasn't all that impressed with the story and there wasn't as much historical reference as I would have liked.
A Letter to Mrs. Roosevelt.......2003-06-05
Eleven-year-old Margo Bandini lives with her Mama, Papa, and brother,Charlie in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. It is the early 1930's and the Great Depression is sweeping the land like a plague and ruining peoples lives. Steel Mill workers in Margo's hometown are losing their jobs. Margo's Papa is in debt because he borrowed $5,000 from the bank that they used for Charlie's leg oporation. The Bandinis now have two weeks to pay back the $5,000 they owe or else they will be forced to move from their home. For a school project, Margo's class has to write a letter to someone whom they admire. Margo decides to write to Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, also known as Eleanor Everywhere. Since her husband, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, has gotten sick with polio, Mrs. Roosevelt goes around the country helping those in need. Will the letter get there in time? Can Mrs. Roosevelt help the Bandinis?
A Letter to Mrs. Roosevelt is an historical fiction novel. This book is narrated from Margo's point of view. On a scale of one to five stars, this book would rate a four because itis very interesting, but we think it ended too soon. If you want to read a dramatic, real-life story about what life was like for some kids during the Depression, this book is the one you should choose.

A letter to Mrs. Roosevelt

Do you think there is a book that can care boredom? Well there is, it is called a letter to Mrs. Roosevelt. An interesting quote I found, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." This book is really interesting, it explains very well in detail. The summary is about and eleven year old girl, Margo Bandini, who lives in Johnston, PA. She has a mom, dad, brother and a best friend named Rosa. The time it's going on is the great depression, causing the families loss of money. In school Margo's whole class has to write a letter to someone that inspires them. Margo picks Eleanor Roosevelt. A sheriff sign soon goes up and they must leave there house. Now Margo has to help papa by Eleanor's advice and her own. The genre is realistic fiction.
This book was tops because it was so much fun to read. The creativity of turning a real event into fiction was very well done. I do recommend this book because anyone would like it. It's exciting, makes you like reading and at the same time you are not bored. This book is probably for a 12 year old girl who doesn't like to read and wants some fun, but the reading level is average. It was a page turner because a lot of things went on in the story, so you didn't want to stop and not find out what happened next. This story was definitely not hard to concentrate because it relates so much to real life. I connected to Margo because we both are nice and will do anything to help others. I like the genre because of the adventure. The style of writing was interesting because, example: a lot of quotes, life wise thinking and characters came to life. What surprised me was when a sheriff sign went up on the house and Charlie found out it was his fault because he broke his leg and had to have surgery for a lot of money. Not every chapter ended with a cliff hanger, but most did. Example: thank you Miss Dobson, but won't my letter need more stamps? I can still picture Miss Dobson smile. She never answered me)this book was not boring because of the mystery. No my mind didn't wander when reading because it's well standard. The plot was believable because it didn't sound fake only real. I think anyone would enjoy this.

Customer Reviews:
Loved it!.......2003-03-08
My 8 yr old brought this book home from her school library. I cried the first time I read it to her, and after that I just made her read it to me! I thought it was fabulous, and have added it to our own library, as well as given it as a gift to many other children.
A Wonderful Book.......2001-06-28
This book was brought to my Children's Literature class and praised by everyone. At least three of us cried at the beauty of the language. The ending grabbed all of us. How beautiful for a child to read that he or she is wonderful just like the the trees, rain and birds. The clever use of borders, lines and space were praised by the professor. Contrary to the previous reviewer, we found the book delightful.
Such a great start, but in the end, a disappointment.........2001-02-12
I picked up this book because the cover looked appealing, and I was intrigued about what this book may be about. I started reading it, and I was really quite impressed. I was starting to get notions in my head about using this book for storytime at work or donating it to my elementary school, but kept reading and changed my mind.
Rylant evokes a great sense of the wonderful in the "ordinary". Little thing which we so often take for granted. I loved that about this book. However, I was really put off about how she tried to tie that in with the child's own being. I didn't like how she made it sound like "then one day, YOU happened", (just like a flower blooming!) because there IS a great difference, in my eyes, in a child being born and a loaf of bread being made.
It could have been really wonderful, but this analogy left me with a bad feeling in the end.
The Next "Good Night Moon".......2000-10-20
What a charming book to introduce the young child to the concept of birth. "The Wonderful Happens" is beautifully illustrated by Coco Dowley and the point of the book shows to a young child the simple beauty and wonder of nature unfolding. I highly recommend this book for reading and sharing with a 3-5 year old child.
Wonderful Happenings.......2000-10-17
This charming picture book makes the connection between how the everyday objects in our lives begin, including us, and then evolve into a final product. For example wheat grows in a field, becomes flour, and then bread. It explains that in the beginning there was no you but then you happened and will grow just like everything else. It beautifully answers many questions children are apt to have about the how and why of things. The illustrations are charmingly filled with birds, animals, flowers, snowmen, all things that would delight a young child. This book could become the next "Good Night Moon."

The story sparked such interest in both of my children to pick the book up over and over again and re-read it. They find it even more exciting when they get to read it under the covers.
Great Book!!.......1999-09-10
Reading this book to my child was a real joy. To see her eyes light up as the pages glowed in the dark was wonderful. This book has now sparked an interest in my child to learn more about the moon and the stars. Great book.
