Author Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book's categorization to be sure that The Devil in the White City is not, in fact, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor. Burnham's challenge was immense. In a short period of time, he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous "White City" around which the fair was built. His efforts to complete the project, and the fair's incredible success, are skillfully related along with entertaining appearances by such notables as Buffalo Bill Cody, Susan B. Anthony, and Thomas Edison. The activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes, who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World's Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims. Combining the stories of an architect and a killer in one book, mostly in alternating chapters, seems like an odd choice but it works. The magical appeal and horrifying dark side of 19th-century Chicago are both revealed through Larson's skillful writing. --John Moe

Combining meticulous research with nail-biting storytelling, Erik Larson has crafted a narrative with all the wonder of newly discovered history and the thrills of the best fiction.

Download Description

In The Devil in the White City, Erik Larson, author of Isaac's Storm, tells the spellbinding true story of two men, an architect and a serial killer, whose fates were linked by the greatest fair in American history: the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, nicknamed "The White City."

Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America's rush toward the twentieth century.

The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair's brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country's most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C.

The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his "World's Fair Hotel" just west of the fairgrounds -- a torture palace complete with dissection table, gas chamber, and 3,000-degree crematorium.

Burnham overcame tremendous obstacles and tragedies as he organized the talents of Frederick Law Olmsted, Charles McKim, Louis Sullivan, and others to transform swampy Jackson Park into the White City, while Holmes used the attraction of the great fair and his own satanic charms to lure scores of young women to their deaths. What makes the story all the more chilling is that Holmes really lived, walking the grounds of that dream city by the lake.

The Devil in the White City draws the reader into a time of magic and majesty, made all the more appealing by a supporting cast of real-life characters, including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others. In this book, the smoke, romance and mystery of the Gilded Age come alive as never before.

Erik Larson's gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder, the killer, and the great fair that obsessed them both.

The book goes into more detail than what I care for, but it is very very interesting in everything you learn about American History

4 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-09-29

Belonging to a book club for several years, we all agreed this book rated as one of our top ten books. Not only was it historically accurate but it was written in a style that captivated the reader with a serial killer on the loose and a race against time to accomplish an almost impossible feat. A book to be read and reread.

5 out of 5 stars discover your darker side.......2007-09-26

i read the book in less than a week - fascinating descriptions, great narrative, etc! this book is beyond fiction..

i especially enjoyed the description of chicago at the height of the "gilded age" and the workings of burnham, olmstead and others involved in the design/architecture and execution of the "white city" - i can't imagine anything of this scale happening in the current social and economic environments and its a pleasure to read about it

but more than anything, i looked forward to the holmes ("the devil") chapters. i'm not much of a rubber-necker, and this book provided me a first-hand experience in fascination-by-destruction. wow!!

5 out of 5 stars So fantastic a tale, you won't believe it's true.......2007-09-24

Chicago, 1893: One of the best and worst years of the city's existence. On the one hand, it was the year of the World's Fair, when Chicago proved its worth to the world, and American culture was changed forever; on the other hand, it was the year of Dr. H. H. Holmes, a charmingly handsome young man who turned out to be one of the country's most sadistic serial killers. Larson tells the tales of Daniel Burnham, the architect behind the construction of the Fair, and Holmes, the evil mastermind who used the fair to satisfy his bloodlust. These two men, who never met, were intricately linked, and their story reads like the best of suspense fiction.

Larson's research is meticulous; his insight into a psychopathic mind is downright chilling. For most of the book he alternates chapters--here, Burnham; there, Holmes; and back and forth. He slips interesting facts into the mix, in just the right proportions to keep readers amused (who knew shredded wheat would stand the test of time?), while in other places hitting you with gut-wrenching facts that will encourage you to do further research on your own. Why Holmes isn't as well known as Dahmer or Bundy, we may never know; and why Burnham is oft-forgotten, while Frank Lloyd Wright (who, yes, has ties to the Fair) is a household name, remains a puzzling mystery. But thankfully, Erik Larson remembered, and wrote this engrossing, fact-drenched thriller about it. This is a tale so amazing, it'll have you doubting its veracity. But, have no fear--or, yes, be very afraid--this is a true story of human triumph, evil, and the forceful will that we call "humanity."

4 out of 5 stars Two Stories in One.......2007-09-21

Devil in the White City, by Erik Larson, tells the incredible story of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago: the fight to hold it in Chicago; the drive to out-do the previous French-held World's Fair; the desire to garner world admiration and respect not only for the U.S., but specifically for Chicago; the personalities involved in the planning, design and execution of this monumental feat. It also told of Herman Webster Mudgett, an especially prolific serial killer who preyed on the scores of women (and others) who came to Chicago during this time for work, excitement and independence. I take it this is the "devil" in the title, but that "devil" could also refer to the Fair itself and its genesis, i.e., the devil is in the details.

I really enjoyed this book because it enlightened me about an event and an era about which I knew very little. The story of the Fair, this amazing idea-made-reality, was, especially when time was short and things didn't look too promising for a successful opening, an act of sheer will and of sterling minds over matter to make it happen. The book was also about this horrendous sociopath who took advantage of the environment of the times and of the Fair, to satisfy his diabolical urges. I found this aspect of the story compelling as well...but thought they were two distinct stories which would have been better told as separate, i.e., in different books. Minor matter - it's very much worth the read. And I now know the origin of the Ferris Wheel.

"I am a Scotsman," Sir Walter Scott famously wrote, "therefore I had to fight my way into the world." So did any number of his compatriots over a period of just a few centuries, leaving their native country and traveling to every continent, carving out livelihoods and bringing ideas of freedom, self-reliance, moral discipline, and technological mastery with them, among other key assumptions of what historian Arthur Herman calls the "Scottish mentality."

It is only natural, Herman suggests, that a country that once ranked among Europe's poorest, if most literate, would prize the ideal of progress, measured "by how far we have come from where we once were." Forged in the Scottish Enlightenment, that ideal would inform the political theories of Francis Hutcheson, Adam Smith, and David Hume, and other Scottish thinkers who viewed "man as a product of history," and whose collective enterprise involved "nothing less than a massive reordering of human knowledge" (yielding, among other things, the Encyclopaedia Britannica, first published in Edinburgh in 1768, and the Declaration of Independence, published in Philadelphia just a few years later). On a more immediately practical front, but no less bound to that notion of progress, Scotland also fielded inventors, warriors, administrators, and diplomats such as Alexander Graham Bell, Andrew Carnegie, Simon MacTavish, and Charles James Napier, who created empires and great fortunes, extending Scotland's reach into every corner of the world.

Herman examines the lives and work of these and many more eminent Scots, capably defending his thesis and arguing, with both skill and good cheer, that the Scots "have by and large made the world a better place rather than a worse place." --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

Who formed the first modern nation?
Who created the first literate society?
Who invented our modern ideas of democracy and free market capitalism?
The Scots.

Mention of Scotland and the Scots usually conjures up images of kilts, bagpipes, Scotch whisky, and golf. But as historian and author Arthur Herman demonstrates, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Scotland earned the respect of the rest of the world for its crucial contributions to science, philosophy, literature, education, medicine, commerce, and politics—contributions that have formed and nurtured the modern West ever since.

Arthur Herman has charted a fascinating journey across the centuries of Scottish history. He lucidly summarizes the ideas, discoveries, and achievements that made this small country facing on the North Atlantic an inspiration and driving force in world history. Here is the untold story of how John Knox and the Church of Scotland laid the foundation for our modern idea of democracy; how the Scottish Enlightenment helped to inspire both the American Revolution and the U.S. Constitution; and how thousands of Scottish immigrants left their homes to create the American frontier, the Australian outback, and the British Empire in India and Hong Kong.

How the Scots Invented the Modern World reveals how Scottish genius for creating the basic ideas and institutions of modern life stamped the lives of a series of remarkable historical figures, from James Watt and Adam Smith to Andrew Carnegie and Arthur Conan Doyle, and how Scottish heroes continue to inspire our contemporary culture, from William “Braveheart” Wallace to James Bond.

Victorian historian John Anthony Froude once proclaimed, “No people so few in number have scored so deep a mark in the world’s history as the Scots have done.” And no one who has taken this incredible historical trek, from the Highland glens and the factories and slums of Glasgow to the California Gold Rush and the search for the source of the Nile, will ever view Scotland and the Scots—or the modern West—in the same way again. For this is a story not just about Scotland: it is an exciting account of the origins of the modern world and its consequences.

“The point of this book is that being Scottish turns out to be more than just a matter of nationality or place of origin or clan or even culture. It is also a state of mind, a way of viewing the world and our place in it. . . . This is the story of how the Scots created the basic idea of modernity. It will show how that idea transformed their own culture and society in the eighteenth century, and how they carried it with them wherever they went. Obviously, the Scots did not do everything by themselves: other nations—Germans, French, English, Italians, Russians, and many others—have their place in the making of the modern world. But it is the Scots more than anyone else who have created the lens through which we see the final product. When we gaze out on a contemporary world shaped by technology, capitalism, and modern democracy, and struggle to find our place as individuals in it, we are in effect viewing the world as the Scots did. . . . The story of Scotland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is one of hard-earned triumph and heart-rending tragedy, spilled blood and ruined lives, as well as of great achievement.”
—FROM THE PREFACE

5 out of 5 stars A must-read!.......2007-09-26

An absolute must-read for anyone interested in how the principles and values that America was founded on came to be...I couldn't help but wonder after reading this inspiring book, why there isn't some type of national recognition for the Scots like those that exist for other cultures (St. Patrick's Day for the Irish, Columbus Day for the Italians, etc.).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-08-23

I was lent a copy of this book and liked it so much that I bought one for myself. It gives a very good background on the Scottish culture and the development of the philosophy that underlies it. It covers a very broad area and the way it is written, makes for very good reading.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-08-15

This book was a Christmas gift and I recently finished reading it. I had fairly low expectations going in, but my interest was held all the way through. Mr. Herman does indeed make a strong case for Scots leading the way in many aspects of modern society, although I would say that declaring that Scots invented the modern world is rather speculative. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed this book and was especially interested in how Scots helped shape the United States and Canada with highlanders generally siding with the monarchy and migrating to Canada as Loyalists after the War of Independence and lowlanders siding with the revolutionaries. An excellent read if you are interested in Scottish or New World history.

4 out of 5 stars The Miracle of the Scottish Enlightenment.......2007-04-20

How did it come about that between 1700 and 1800 a small undeveloped European country transformed itself into a modern capitalist democracy? The title is obviously pretentious and used as a marketing gimmick. It worked on me because it convinced me to buy this book. Historian Arthur Herman is not Scottish or of Scottish descent, but he has written a very compelling chronicle of the miracle of the Scottish Enlightenment.

In 1707, the Union Act united the kingdoms of Scotland and England. Prior to this, the two antagonists living on opposite sides of Hadrian's Wall wanted nothing to do with each other. Scotland consisted mainly of primitive clans living in the highlands and slightly more advanced lowlanders living mainly in the cities of Glascow and Edinburgh. The parliament in Edinburgh was controlled by groups of noblemen who in turn were dominated by the rigid and inquisitorial Presbyterian Kirk (church) of Scotland.

After 1707, there were two developments that were crucial to Scotland's rise to modernity. The first was the opening up to the economic free trade zone of the British Empire. At first the Scottish fretted about either being swallowed-up by their world-class English competitors or becoming pauperized like the Irish. Their fears were misplaced, neither happened. Instead, the Scottish became, Herman argues, the most significant player in the the empire's economic and intellectual sphere.

The second big reason for Scottish success was their public education system - the first in Europe. This was the work of the Presbyterian Kirk. They maintained that political power, ordained by God, was vested in the people, not the monarchy or the church. The Kirk believed that all people should be able to read the Bible, and as a consequence they achieved a 75% literacy rate - unprecedented in 1750.

Near-universal education produced in this tiny country a disproportionate number of world-class thinkers - David Hume, Francis Hutchison, and Adam Smith, to name a few. They transformed the fields of philosophy, history, economics, education, commerce, architecture, and many more. Due to their mutual animosity toward the English, the Scots found inspiration from the great thinkers of the French Enlightenment, and vice versa. It was Voltaire who said that, "We look to Scotland for all of our ideas of civilization."

As for Herman's claim that the Scots invented the modern world, it should be taken with a grain of salt. In the free trade zone of the British Empire, commerce and ideas flowed both ways. It can be said that the Scots did much to improve or make new existing ideas, and in some cases invent; but they did not singlehandedly invent the modern world.

The Scottish Enlightenment was not without its dark side. The modernizing of the Scottish Highlands was anything but civilized. Before the Scots exported the ideas of goverment and commerce abroad, it had to brutally convert some of its own population. Herman also sidesteps the ugly fact that the Scots were deeply involved in the slave trade and the Klu Klux Klan in the US, and in the opium trade in China - recall the trading companies of Jardine Matheson and Hutchison Whampoa originally spoke with a Scottish burr. Not to say that they invented either of these unseemly businesses, but they certainly flourished in them.

Nevertheless, Professor Herman is a gifted writer and he is exceptionally good at explaining the many geniuses that populated this tiny country during the 18th century.

An absolutely brilliant analysis of the ways in which individuals and organizations of the media are influenced to shape the social agendas of knowledge and, therefore, belief. Contrary to the popular conception of members of the press as hard-bitten realists doggedly pursuing unpopular truths, Herman and Chomsky prove conclusively that the free-market economics model of media leads inevitably to normative and narrow reporting. Whether or not you've seen the eye-opening movie, buy this book, and you will be a far more knowledgeable person and much less prone to having your beliefs manipulated as easily as the press.

Book Description

In this pathbreaking work, now with a new introduction, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky show that, contrary to the usual image of the news media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and defense of justice, in their actual practice they defend the economic, social, and political agendas of the privileged groups that dominate domestic society, the state, and the global order.

Based on a series of case studies—including the media’s dichotomous treatment of “worthy” versus “unworthy” victims, “legitimizing” and “meaningless” Third World elections, and devastating critiques of media coverage of the U.S. wars against Indochina—Herman and Chomsky draw on decades of criticism and research to propose a Propaganda Model to explain the media’s behavior and performance. Their new introduction updates the Propaganda Model and the earlier case studies, and it discusses several other applications. These include the manner in which the media covered the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement and subsequent Mexican financial meltdown of 1994-1995, the media’s handling of the protests against the World Trade Organization, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund in 1999 and 2000, and the media’s treatment of the chemical industry and its regulation. What emerges from this work is a powerful assessment of how propagandistic the U.S. mass media are, how they systematically fail to live up to their self-image as providers of the kind of information that people need to make sense of the world, and how we can understand their function in a radically new way.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant critique of the American mass media.......2007-09-30

In this critique of the American Mass Media, the authors present a "propaganda model" and then go on to support it with a variety of examples. The model is based on five "filters" that news passes through:

1. That of corporate/profit-minded ownership

2. Of advertising as a revenue model, which makes media reliant on big advertisers

3. Of the necessity to be close to common "sources" of news and PR (because the media can not be present themselves everywhere that news is made at the time it's made), many of which are controlled by Government and big corporations

4. The aversion to Flak, i.e., negative responses to media programs and

5. Anti-communism as a control mechanism (yes, the book is fairly old - it was originally written in 1988, I think)

These forces cause the media to behave in certain strange ways towards news. One of these, the authors point out, is the treatment of "worthy" and "unworthy" victims, the former being those that are oppressed by/in countries aligned with Communists, and the latter being victims of policies supported by the United States. For instance, the murder of Jerzy Popieluszko, a Polish priest murdered by the Polish police, attracted far greater attention in the media than the murders of several other priests murdered in countries that were within the American sphere of influence.

Unlike other treatments that suggest a conspiracy theory, the authors have chosen to analyze the forces (the five filters) that make journalists and others internalize the principles of distortion.

The Propaganda Model in the book is very powerful, and comes alive through the numerous case studies. As the authors point out, a freely functioning media is often thought to be central to any notion of a democracy, and hence the importance of this deep understanding of the ways the media operates.

The book leaves me hanging with a few thoughts:

1. How does this thinking apply to media in other countries where the models of ownership, legal structures, market economy and many other variables are very different? Especially, I am curious to know if someone has done a similar analysis of media in my home country, India.

2. Is the web helping democratize news? The authors talk a fair bit about the consolidation of mainstream media in a few hands, and the reasons for that which are primarily around the economics of distribution. I feel that the web has changed the economics sufficiently for news to become more open, but I'd love to see a more academic treatment of the subject.

3 out of 5 stars Presents Examples; Model is Too Theoretical.......2007-08-13

This book presents a "propaganda model" which is designed to predict (and has held up remarkably well) what stories will be covered by the press and what ones will go uncovered. The model is made by filters, which a story must pass through - the more filters a story collides with the less likely it'll be covered. The problem with the model is that it's nothing new - it explains what we've already known; that victims of the state get less coverage and victims of our enemies are exaggerated. But, no new insight will arise about what causes it (editors blocking the story, journalistic incompetence, etc.) and it might be naive to think anything one model can, because circumstances are highly individual.

Furthermore, the rest of the book (which is just individual analyses of overseas conflicts and how they were depicted back home) hardly addresses the model - because it can't. The only way a book could have incorporated the thesis (propaganda model) would be to investigate what at home, in the newsbereaus went wrong. Instead, the authors examine overseas situations and who the media sided with. Regardless of your views about whether Chomsky's and Herman's view of the truth about these situations is, the model seems like an excuse to write about these overseas situations.

With that being said, the book is very helpful in describing what really happened overseas, particularly Indochina and Central America. Not only will you learn a lot about what actually happened, but also about the unreported and misreported events.

Don't get the book to understand anything more about how the media operates (you'll learn nothing new). Get the book if you want another side to the presented overseas situations. This newer edition talks about the IMF and World Bank protests in 1999 and 2000, and also the Kosovo Crisis.

5 out of 5 stars Best book to read if you want to understand how the media works .......2007-07-07

Manufacturing Consent

Manufacturing Consent pretty much sums up how the media works within the United States model of democracy. Far from a "conspiracy theorist" (which Chomsky is not) evaluation, the authors explain that the control of the media is systematic within a corporate-controlled framework; that is to say that, since the media is essentially run by large corporations, they wont go too far to the left, exposing the crimes of the country that allowed them to be subsequently rich. So this book is as much of a "conspiracy" analysis as an analysis of capitalism itself it, which is ludicrous, as neither are "conspiratorial" (in the sense of people who think, for example, the U.S. government faked the 1969 moon landing), but rather the expected, systematic outcome of what takes place under such a system; YOU own a newspaper - you get YOUR views across (or something close to it).

Chomsky and Herman vociferously reveal that political debate is framed within certain bounds that are mainly applicable to how far "left" you can go. For example, the question is always asked, "What are `we' going to do about Iran's nuclear program?" The question is almost never asked whether they have the right to even have a nuclear program, so there definitely won't ever be any debate within that framework. So in other words, the media makes presuppositions we're just supposed to accept, and if we don't debate within that structure, we'll be labeled "marginal" and thus our opinions shunned.

This book is far better than, say, Slander, by Ann Coulter, as she apparently fails to understand the role of the "liberal" intellectuals and reporters, which is to set the bounds on how far to the left you can go in political debate - and if you cross that line, there will be a whole list of words you'll be called, like,

-socialist
-communist
-anti-American
-terrorist sympathizer
-and a slew of other silly buzzwords, which have been completely evacuated of any substance, and utilized purposely to dismantle any further discourse.

1 out of 5 stars A socialist idea from a socialist.......2007-06-28

Now im going to sate this right out: i dont have any negative feelings for Noam Chomsky as a person. He seems well intentioned and his work does bring out facts about american foreign policy that are interesting. My problem with most of his works are his scholarship. This book i have read more then once and it is a severe blunder in an attempt at media analysis. The basic theory behind this book is that The News corporations are beholden to the advertising companies who give them money and the the government who not only helps the news corp with "Selective" news leaks but is sinisterly connected to the corporations. Not to mention the monopoly of only a few media corporations controlling the news. Since Big business (which owns government) is controlled by elites, They mold the news to fit what they want people to hear.

This is supposed to be a free market view. Actually this is very much the view a person steeped on socialist thinking would have. The idea of elites managing a system from the top down could be nothing farther from a freemarket view. As a editor states in the documentary, this view could only come from someone who doesnt understand the way a newspaper or news show works. This book is interesting if you believe in capitalist conspiracies

1 out of 5 stars Manufacturing Lies.......2007-06-05

Manufacturing Consent is poorly researched, shoddily organized and replete with attempts to mislead and deceive the unsuspecting reader. This is not hyperbole- one can find falsehoods on nearly every page.

A typical example of the book's deceit is Chomsky and Herman's analysis of "legitimizing versus meaningless" Central American elections. They attack the fairness of the 1984 Salvadoran elections on the grounds that voting was required by law and that the government defense minister Guillermo Garcia stated abstention would be treasonous. They state that a "climate of fear" which worked to "encumber free debate and free choice... was rarely even hinted at in the mass media" (Manufacturing Consent p. 108).

They also provide a footnote (n. 69, p. 359) stating: "Warren Hoge did quote Garcia, but only to suggest an open election: 'Without any lies, you can see here what it is that the people want...' ("Salvadorans Jam Polling Stations," New York Times, Mar. 29, 1982)".

There are two problems here:

1) The Warren Hoge NYT article (the actual headline is "Salvadorans Jam Polling Stations; Rebels Close Some" - the latter part curiously omitted) cited in the footnote proves just the opposite of what Chomsky and Herman claim about the US media:

a) It explicitly mentions that "[t]he left had refused to run any candidates, arguing that they would not be safe from retaliatory violence in the current atmosphere in El Salvador."

b) It explicitly quotes a woman at a polling place who said "that people had voted out of fear that officials would threaten those whose names did not appear on the voting lists."

c) It explicitly mentions that after a guerrilla attack on a polling place, "soldiers pulled residents from their homes and beat them." Other articles from the same day mention guerrilla threats to kill those who voted ("Rural Voters, Despite Fears, Hike for Miles," New York Times, Mar. 29, 1982)

And from these sources Chomsky and Herman would have the reader believe that a "climate of fear" in the Salvadoran elections was "rarely even hinted at" in the major media. Ridiculous.

2) Chomsky and Herman also do not mention Daniel Ortega giving the same treason warning as the Salvadoran defense minister to Nicaraguans in 1984: "The only ones who will not vote will be the enemies of Nicaragua, the traitors, the turncoats... and [they] will expose themselves to the fury of the people at the moment of intervention" (Robert Leiken, Why Nicaragua Vanished, p. 136), nor that this threat at a campaign rally was not cited in major press accounts (ibid. p. 135), a fact which would seem to directly contradict their propaganda model. Instead Chomsky and Herman's analysis of coercion in Nicaragua's 1984 elections descends into utter hypocrisy and absurdity: they cite a Time magazine article that says failure to vote was considered a counter-revolutionary stance, and which quotes Ortega as saying those who did not vote would be "sellouts". To this they lamely reply that Ortega's statement "was an insult but not a clear threat... not clearly a warning" (p. 124). And this rubbish is held up as penetrating analysis?

Anyone who reads this book should take the time to fact check and verify each citation, if only to see how badly they're being conned. Better yet, save your time and money and look elsewhere for scholarly and intellectually honest treatments of media bias.

Exellent study guide for beginner and journeyman Accompanying CD is articulate and the best I have seen. The author has done a fine job, both technically and artistically.

2 out of 5 stars Not the Real Deal..........2002-09-13

For those who want to know the fundamentals of Automated Industrial Systems under the heading of Electrical Motor Control... This text of ISBN 0-8273-8640-0, I can not recommend. There maybe better text that I am not aware of, But ISBN 0-8269-1663-5 from 1987 is a text you can grow with. I'll be upgrading to ISBN 0-8269-1675-9 by Gary Rockis & Glen Mazur. Sincerely, Industrial Maintenance Electrician of 12+ years. I will post an additional review once I have viewed the upgraded edition. (I've wondered about these reviews... Are they posted by a PR / sales people???) Good Luck & Be Safe.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Detailed Motor Control Text.......2001-12-19

Very competently written text that covers all areas of traditional motor control. The author demonstrates his field knowledge by including typical characteristics of device failure and indications where inspection and possible maintenance would be prudent. Circuits and schematics are shown in standard ladder logic convention and in some instances even shows analogy to digital logic for those who are formerly trained electronics technicians.

My one criticism is the sequencing of some of the chapters. The author seems to have weaved in and out of some areas where I expected more complete coverage only to find the topics further toward the back of the text. This detracts from an otherwise well written and authoritative text for the 1st time and intermediate level learner.

5 out of 5 stars Great Information.......2001-10-25

This book is loaded with informative and valuable essential
information that anyone in the field would find enteresting, and would be of extreme benefit to those entering the field.

I found each chapter well written, easy to understand, and not cluttered with useless information.

The Unit on "Synchronous Automatic Motor Starter" was of particular interest to me as I have operated these machines before.

The section on "Developing Control Circuits" was also exciting for me as I have worked on storm drain pumping stations, and sewage lift stations which utilized the two pump alternating scheme shown in Figs. 2 thru 6.

The solid state theory and circuits was excellent.

This book makes for great reading, and I recommend it for all hands.

5 out of 5 stars Execellent book. Few technical books hit the mark like this.......1999-06-12

Well written electronic/electrical books are like finding gold nuggets. I have an electrical background and used this book as a refresher to study for a professional test. I found it was well written, accurate and to the point. The authors did not get bogged down in endless calculations, but did present what was necessary. The authors covered each subject completely with well selected words, illustrations, and pictures that conveyed the idea in a simple to understand format. I would recommend this book to anyone, beginner, or craftsman seeking review of subjects they have not worked with for some time. I liked the short unit concept of covering each subject. I will look to these authors first for other electrical titles in the future.

Book Description

In 2002, Gee’s Bend burst into international prominence through the success of Tinwood’s Quilts of Gee’s Bend exhibition and book, which revealed an important and previously invisible art tradition from the African American South. Critics and popular audiences alike marveled at these quilts that combined the best of contemporary design with a deeply rooted ethnic heritage and compelling human stories about the women. Gee's Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt is a major book and museum exhibition that will premiere at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), in June 2006 before traveling to seven American museums through 2008. The book's 330 color illustrations and insightful text bring home the exciting experience to readers while displaying all the cultural heritage and craftsmanship that have gone into these remarkable quilts.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Visuals, Informative Text!.......2007-09-17

This book is gorgeous!!! It includes large photographs of tons of quilts, in a size that allows you to see the smallest details, such as topstitching. It also includes inspirational photos of details of the town. However, it's not your typical coffe table book, because it has probably equal parts very informative text and visuals. Since it's not small enough to carry with me on the train, it's been hard separating myself from this book-- it is beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars Another Gee's Bend book.......2007-05-13

I like this book because it is full of information about the construction of the quilts and alot of trivia about the makers of the quilts. Very beautiful pictures! A great book for learning.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting look at quilts as modern art.......2007-02-08

This book illustrates the link between the incredibly beautiful quilts produced by five generations of African American women in the South to the architecture they saw around them and to their own artistic vision. Their personal stories, contained in chapters toward the end of the book, are very moving and inspirational.

5 out of 5 stars Gee's Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt by Paul Arnett, William Arnett .......2007-01-12

Wonderful book full of pictures and inspiration, and the story of the Gees Bend Quilts.

5 out of 5 stars A great book on a legendary art.......2007-01-04

This book shows the Gees Bend quilts in all their gorgeous and unself-conscious art, as well as telling the story of these women, descended from slaves in an isolated community, who created this amazing abstract art. A wonderful book, with many color photos of the quilts.

1 out of 5 stars I Was Very Disappointed.......2007-04-12

Unless you are writing a book along the lines of "How To Succeed In The Business World," or a book on genealogy, or self help, I recommend that you do not buy this book. The agents who wrote the book appear to be mainly focused on books for the business world. The book that I've written is an explosive exposé on the CIA and bipartisan corruption in the government, but absolutely none of the ten "sample book proposals" in "Write the Perfect Book Proposal" were of any use. But to be fair, this book might be for you if you are writing about business, or self help, or genealogy. (One of the sample proposals deals with genealogy.)

1 out of 5 stars outdated.......2007-03-20

outdated, pick something on the same subject by someone else that was published this year; this one has extremely stale info. The world of publishing has changed dramatically since it was written 8 years ago or more, with much new info about cybermarketing and other strong ways of reaching audiences and potential publishers. Also, make sure the book you read is about the kind of book you have written /are writing. There are different approaches needed to reach publishers, depending.

4 out of 5 stars Writing a book proposal.......2007-01-15

This is a very good primer on writing a book proposal. It addresses all the key areas that need be included. It's point of differentiation is that it provides 10 examples of proposals that worked. Hence, you really get some good directly usable ideas for headlines and for content within. I was a bit surprised to find as much as 75% devoted to examples...but that ultimately is good. Too often the frontend text is vague, as it must be, but the proposal examples give you much more meat.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book - buy it!.......2007-01-12

Folks,
This is a great book because it lays everything out for you in a simple and easy to understand manner. If you are looking for something that is quick and easy to understand, this is the book for you.

The examples are great because you actually get to see what a real book proposal looks like. The author also tells you what is both good and bad about the examples.

It's a great book that is a quick read...

Enjoy,
Ken Konet

5 out of 5 stars Good Resource for All.......2006-08-20

My publisher recommended this book as I prepared to write my second non-fiction book. I was looking for guidelines for proposal writing, and was not disappointed. I found something helpful in each of the ten proposals the Hermans chose to illustrate their guidelines. The list of elements that need to be included in any proposal, no matter the genre, convinced me I'd do well to follow their advice. I recommend this book for new authors looking for help getting their foot in a publisher's door.

I like this book and refer to it for Ellie's spin on things from time to time. A bit pricey (especially when Rael Isacowitz' book is now but something like $20 and pretty much rocks), but worth it I think. I also like the Pilates props book she wrote.

5 out of 5 stars A Winner Since It Was Published.......2007-01-11

I have been using The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet since it was first published, and have gone through two books. It is a diet that WORKS! Easy to follow, various options and not boring. I have gifted a number of people with the diet book and all have had impressive weight loss. I am over joyed that The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet is still available! Marilyn Woods

5 out of 5 stars The Only Way I've Ever Been Able to Lose Weight!.......2006-10-04

I have tried literally every diet book out there - Fat Flush, South Beach, Zone, Body For Life - and Weight Watchers numerous times. The only diet that has ever worked for me is SMD. I went on it in desperation 3 years ago and lost 25 lbs in about 6 weeks. I kept all the weight off until I got pregnant two years ago. With 15 baby pounds left to lose, I'm going back on next week!

Tips:
- You WILL be Desperately Hungry, despite what the good doctor says, especially for the first 3 days or so until you adjust. Try diet sodas to help assuage this.
- You must exercise. I found that I did not lose weight on the days that I didn't run a couple of miles. The diet is very low calorie and your metabolism will adjust accordingly if you don't kick it into gear.
- The "Fruit salad every day" may hinder your weight loss. If you're using the alternative lunch with no problem, ignore this one. But I found I often didn't lose weight on the days I used the fruit salad alternative.

Best of luck!

5 out of 5 stars Review of The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet:Plus Dr. Tarnower' Lifetime Keep-Slim Program.......2006-02-25

This book contains the "original" low carb diet. If you read the book and follow the plan carefully you will have excellent results. I have followed the medical diet for the full 14 days, used the "keep-slim" plan to follow and have enjoyed success with it. You are never hungry and your carbohydrate cravings disappear almost immediately! There are very helpful aids to keep you "on track". Many questions and answers regarding the diet are covered throughout the book! I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Acknowledgement Review.......2005-10-17

Dr. Tarnower created what might be the worlds healthiest diet back in the late 1970's. Since he was a cardiologist his primary concern was, of course, with the ticker. The book is written in plain english so lay persons, like myself, may understand it. The only problem I have is with who is given the very first acknowledgement in the begining of the book. Jean Harris is thanked for her help with getting the book published. Since Jean Harris is also the person who shot Dr. Tarnower five times, and eventhough this sounds redondant I will say it anyway, and killed him, one year after the book was published, I see no reason why the acknowledgement to her was not deleted from all future printings.

I know Amazon.com has nothing to do with the printing of the books they sell, but, well, you asked for my opinion so I gave it to you.

5 out of 5 stars No Yo-Yo's from this Book.......2004-07-16

This book has worked better for me than any of the current best selling $40 diet books out there. I have been off of this diet for at least 9 months now and without ever working out or dieting. I first whent from 220lbs to 197lbs in less then 2 months. And 9 months later I am jumping back and forth from 200 to 205 lbs. If you still want to call that a Yo-Yo diet then I guess I am hapy with this YoYo.

This is not a diet for everyone. It takes 100% will power and, trust me... You will have to fight to stay on it. But if I could do it. So can you!!! Trust me! I can recall me cheating and eating some mexican food for lunch and/or dinner. I did not fallow the book to the "T" But with me cheating with only one meal a day it worked!

Just the other day my friend, who hates to say I am right. Asked me for this book. He asked me if I was still on it and I said not for 9 months and he said "WoW". So I gave the book to him. I dont think he will have the will power to fallow the first 2 weeks. But I have enough trust in Scarsdale that evin if he cheats more then I did he will still lose the weight. I plan on buying this book for all the women I know. This book is just that good. I laugh at people on South beach and Atkins. This book putes all the over priced books and ideas to shame.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Growing up as a Maasai warrior.......2007-09-20

I really liked this book. It is one of several that I purchased after coming back from Tanzania, and I have recommended it to others. The author is straight-forward about his situation, so I wouldn't recommend it to children under, say, 12, but it is quite moving as an adult book, though he wrote it for young people.

5 out of 5 stars From the African bush to Harvard........2007-09-15

Facing the Lion is the amazing TRUE story of a Maasai boy growing up in Kenya. I first heard about this National Geographic book from my son's 8th grade world history teacher - it was on a summer reading list. B-O-R-I-N-G - right? Well think again. You will not be able to put this book down! The boy grows up tending his family's herd of extremely valuable cows - and that means standing guard at night when lions literally leap from the bush to decimate the livestock. The lessons that the boy learns from incredible adventure, adversity, and challenge in his African upbringing only serve to give him the drive, determination, and power to succeed at HARVARD. My husband read the book on a plane and now uses a number of examples in his consulting practice. A FUN read and a WONDERFUL book for ANYBODY - teens to adult.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, yet informative!.......2007-09-10

Narrated in the voice of a child as he grows up in a Maasai village, this is a quick, easy-to-read book for learning a lot about the Maasai culture (ie; before traveling to Africa, or for general interest). It was recommended by my travel agent and, while very simple, I will agree it is very well worth the read!

5 out of 5 stars Facing the Lion: Growing Up Maasai.......2007-06-08

This book was absolutely fascinating to adults as well as younger readers.

5 out of 5 stars Joseph Lekuton is elected to Kenya Parliament.......2006-07-27

On July 24, 2006, this remarkable young man was elected to the Kenyan parliament to represent his home district. He says thank you for the help and encouragement he received while living in the United States.
