Book Description
A must-read for families seeking answers about a loved one's co-occurring disorder. "My mother has become forgetful and seems especially sad lately. I know she takes too much pain medication. Where can I find help for her?" "My teenage son has hallucinations. I think he's depressed. He sees a psychiatrist and takes medication, but he doesn't seem to be getting better. What can I do?" "My wife is euphoric one day and suicidal the next. Her doctor told her to stop drinking while she's taking antidepressant medication, but she hasn't stopped. How do I intervene?" Families at wit's end about a loved one's co-occurring psychiatric and addictive problems will find vital information???and inspiration??? in this important guide. As the authors explain, when psychiatric and addictive disorders travel together, they cause confusion among family members and even misdiagnoses for patients. Here, families learn how psychiatric diagnoses mimic addictive disorders, why chemical use exacerbates psychiatric problems, what various treatment approaches offer, and when intervention is needed. Real-life stories throughout the book offer hope, illustrating that people do recover from co-occurring disorders and that families do heal.

Book Description
During my nearly 50 years in medicine (closer to 60 years if you count the many years I visited patients in the hospital or their home with my physician father), I slowly realized that we physicians are losing, or never had, good bedside manner like my father and my role models did. As a result, and for many other reasons, we have lost the trust of the public. Practicing medicine has become a contract rather than a covenant with the patient. Our professionalism is being eroded.
This is a 'how-to' book for young physicians who may not otherwise learn what the Art of Medicine is supposed to be from their role models.
Many (most?) people have lost control in maintaining a balance in their lives, resulting in stress, huge debts and unhappiness. As a result, they cannot perform any job as well as their potential. We need to relearn the Art of Living.
I can summarize why I wrote the book by saying, "I wish I had known all this when I was younger!"
Customer Reviews:
If you ever wondered what your doctor was thinking.............2004-02-22
.....read this book. This book was written from the heart. For the most part, it is written for an audience of young physicians but with an awareness that the patient may also be reading. It is told from the perspective of the experienced physician, in this case the author, Edward C. Rosenow III, M.D., who worked at Mayo Clinic for 31 years who learned "that many times the gift of caring and compassion are more effective in healing than the power of modern medicine." There are two main sections: The Art of Living and the Art of MedicinePeople will find it an invaluable guide for their own life and work.
I particularly enjoyed the chapters on How to Be a Patient, Qualities of the Respected Person, Simplify Your Life, Your Relationship to People You Work With. The chapter called End of Life Issues was incredibly well done. Amazing work.
A major philosophy repeated in the book was: "FAMILY, FRIENDS, FUN/FELLOWSHIP, FORGIVE, FORGET ....... work." The book is sprinkled with quotes collected by Dr. Rosenow over the years. Colette says, "What a wonderful life I've had, I only wish I realized it sooner!"
The book is filled with lots of advice such as these gems from the section on volunteering:
"The gift of self-giving can be as simple as smiling!"
"The best thing you have to give is yourself!"
"Volunteering develops compassion, improves your self-esteem, and creates a transient euphoria."
The casual style of the writing gave me the feeling that I was listening and learning from a compassionate mentor. The book is published "on-demand." It is not a slickly produced or over-edited. I found that added to the charm. The author's voice was clear and true.
Even if you are just interested in learning more about how a successful physician thinks and works, you'll enjoy this book. I know I'll be a better patient for reading it and I'm sure the care I receive will improve as a result.

Book Description
"America's irrepressible doyenne of domestic satire."
THE BOSTON GLOBE
Madcap, bittersweet humor in classic Erma Bombeck-style. You'll laugh until it hurts and love it! "Any mother with half a skull knows that when Daddy's little boy becomes Mommy's little boy, the kid is so wet, he's treading water. What do you mean you're a participle in the school play and you need a costume? Those rotten kids. If only they'd let me wake up in my own way. Why do they have to line up along my bed and stare at me like Moby Dick just washed up onto a beach somewhere?"
Customer Reviews:
A little too choppy in its setup and delivery........2006-08-17
"At Wit's End" was the first Erma Bombeck book I read. I've been told that I write like her, so I was curious about what she had to say. I found the set-up rather choppy and her flow severly erratic. Her humor was chuckle-worthy, but I felt she was writing more towards herself, expecting the readers to fully grasp her humor. Even if you're not a wife or mother, you can still enjoy what is being said about such topics. I "sorta" recommend.
Erma Bombeck, 101.......2002-12-23
This is Erma Bombeck's first book and you can see all that talent, all that material ready to make its mark on the world.
But it doesn't read as a "first book" - all the stuff is there - the kids letting you know on Sunday night they need a costume for the school play - this happens in 2002 just the same as it happened in the 1970s - and of course, mom has no idea what she's supposed to do about a costume. That part is worht the price of admission alone.
So find a quiet spot, maybe after the kids have gone to school and you're wondering if you relaly should have sent them since it's snowing and school will probably close early - get a cup of coffee and read about what it's really like to be a mom.
Oh, and keep the radio on, too - they'll be announcing the school closings for you - and of course, the bus won't be available to pick them up;)
Still the truth all these years later . . ........2000-08-17
I used to occasionally pick up my mother's Erma Bombeck books when I was a young teenager and read some of it -- I found it funny but didn't quite understand it.
I am now the stay-at-home mother of a three year old with the second baby on the way. What she writes about is as true in 2000 as it was in the 1970s. The environment may have changed -- not nearly as many stay-at-home moms, and the ones that are tend to be working from home, et cetera.
But there are still husbands who decide to fix the plumbing themselves, there are still kids who want cupcakes and a costume for the school play on Sunday night, and there are still women with college educations who haven't gotten to read a book other than the Dr. Seuss series since before the kids were born.
I understand now. I comprehend fully why my mother told me, when I asked as a naïve teenager what was so funny about Erma Bombeck, I'd understand later. There is no better author to make mothers feel like they're not the only person in the world that puts up with this . . . because their kids and husbands haven't noticed yet.
A one-year look at the "average" housewife!.......1999-03-02
This was Erma Bombeck's first book, and it is hilarious! It takes her through a one-year period, with all the trials and tribulations of housewivery. She tells a great story . . . and explains who she wrote this book for! It is a marvelous pick-me-up book. Read it! "My children have an imagination straight from the pages of Frankenstein. Once they put a live hamster on my chest to wake me up in the morning. As I bolted upright, my throat muscles paralyzed by fear, they asked, "Can we have the cardboard that comes with Daddy's shirts?"

God At Your Wits' End.......2006-02-26
Marilyn Meberg does a wonderful job of "unwrapping one's remaining graveclothes" in this book. Full of spiritual insight from her own personal struggles with faith issues, she enables the reader to understand how "faulty thinking" can rob one of the true concept of God and shows the way to embark on a path full of truth and freedom.
A "must read" for anyone having difficulty with faith issues!

The One Book to Own About the Vicious Circle.......2006-01-12
This is the best book out there about the roots, growth and history of the Round Table. Jim Gaines has done a remarkable job of presenting the colorful group. Packed with photos and illustrations, a must-have book for devotees of the Vicious Circle.
Never Burned Brighter.......2005-06-24
The Algonquin wits were self-absorbed, self-congratulatory, alcoholic and mean. But we loved them so. We have never seen their like since, although a few attempts have been made to recreated their magic.
This is a great book about them - love 'em or not!
Best book ever on the subject.......1999-07-21
Anyone interested in the Twenties, the writing of the Twenties, the birth of mass media, the culture of the Lost Generation or the Algonquin Round Table writers must BUY THIS BOOK!

Film As A Subversive Art
ASIN: 092970116X |
Book Description
Of all art forms, filmmaking is the one most taken for granted: no sooner is an artistic or technical advance made than its salient features are employed in the harness of commerce. Yet, innovation is almost always the province of individual expression. Film at Wit's End presents eight artists who have electrified American independent cinema across four decades: James Broughton, Bruce Conner, Maya Deren, Jerome Hill, Ken Jacobs, Christopher MacLaine, Marie Menken, and Sidney Peterson. Each of these filmmakers' lives and work is brought into sharp focus as we enter the art scenes of New York and San Francisco during times of ferment and controversy. Film at Wit's End tells marvelous tales of serendipitous encounters, of life lived at the edge of social disapproval, and of the insistent development of an art form.

PLEASE-give Erma to future generations!.......2003-09-07
Erma Bombeck will always be one of my heroes. I still have her picture from the cover of Time magazine hanging on my "Wall of Fame" in my laundry room, along with my college diploma, a picture of the first woman to run for Vice-President, and various cards with special significance from family and friends. When I was a young mom, her writing always reminded me that laughter is better than tears. Whenever I thought that I could not possibly survive this child-rearing thing, I would pick up one of Erma's books and find out that she already survived the same hair-raising incidents and still had brain power. I still treasure many quotes I have picked up from her books. She wrote an article once about children becoming the parents to their own parents. She stated that she knew that was happening the time she hit the brake on her car and instinctively put out her arm in front of her mother who was riding in the passenger seat. How that image tugged at my heartstrings when it happened with my own mother. She wrote about everyday life, common to most of us with humor, poignancy, and great love. I will be giving her books to young parents as long as I live. Her words should be treasured by every generation.
Great collection.......2000-05-23
Truly the best of Bombeck! A great addition to your bookshelf if you are a Bombeck fan!

Informative Plain Talk.......2006-11-10
At Wit's End truly helped our family see the differenbce
between normal aging and the problems presented by the
horrible disease Alzheimer's. Our fears have been minimized
knowing what signs to look for that are normal and those
that could be early signs of Alzheimer's. Thanks for all
the great information.
Plain Talk is just what this book is.......2006-10-10
The title of this book is just what it is - Plain and simple talk about Alzheimer's disease. But it is not only for families and clinicians. It is for anyone interested in the disease and how it affects not only those afflicted, but those around them. I have no family member or friend with this disease, however I found the book easy to read and easy to understand. Dr. Kraus has presented this subject in a sensitive, yet very informative manner. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to broaden their knowledge of this subject.
