    Book Description

Production planning in fresh food industries is a challenging task. Although modern Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) systems could provide significant support, APS implementation numbers in these industries remain low. Therefore, based on an in-depth analysis of three sample fresh food industries (dairy, fresh and processed meat), the author evaluates what APS systems should offer in order to effectively support production planning and how the leading systems currently handle the most distinguishing characteristic of fresh food industries, the short product shelf life. Starting from the identified weaknesses, customized software solutions for each of the sample industries are proposed that allow to optimize the production of fresh foods with respect to shelf life. The book thereby offers valuable insights not only to researchers but also to software providers of APS systems and professionals from fresh food industries.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful handbook for booklovers.......2003-11-19

Shelf Life is full of wonderful quotes about words and books, enlightening and inspirational stories for all booklovers, and encouragement to live your life as a reader. I thoroughly enjoyed this window into the minds of authors about the meaning and joy of reading.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-08-14

I received this book as a birthday gift from a former coworker and long-time friend who like me has a vast love of reading books. The book could have benefited from a good editor that would hopefully cut out the all too frequent Christian rhetoric and caught problems such as the duplicate lenghty C.S. Lewis quote that appeared in two sections of the book.

The book was at it's best when the authors were quoting secular authors from throughout history, which thankfully was a large part of the book, but not enough large enough to salvage it.

The book was at it's worst when original writing and dogma by the authors appeared.

5 out of 5 stars Only for Book lovers, I'm sure!.......2000-06-13

"I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library," wrote Jorge Luis Borges. This perfect quote for book lovers is a sampling of what's inside Shelf Life, a treatise about the impact books have on humanity. Throughout this small volume, the reader uncovers information about books as well as wonderful quotes concerning books, and book lists from a variety of sources. It is also a look at what kinds of reads appeal to a variety of thinkers. The quotes alone are enough to make an avid reader want to get his/her hands on these pages, the book lists are engrosing as well. I could ad some of my own favorites to this review, and so I shall: My Best Friends Live In Books ...from a poster promoting the children's writer, Rosemary Wells. You better be careful to make books like you!... ...taken from The Goops by Gelette Burgess. The only thing missing are some pretty pictures! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating literary, cultural and historical survey........2000-02-04

The culture of books and reading has had a great impact not only upon the lives of individuals, but on the course of nations. This celebration of books and reading gathers quotes and reflections by literary figures from all eras, considering these changes. Light but inviting reading.

    Book Description

While recovering from radiation therapy, Suzanne Strempek Shea heard from a friend who was looking for help at her bookstore. Shea volunteered, seeing it as nothing more than a way to get out of her pajamas and back into the world. But over the next twelve months, from St. Patrick_s Day through Poetry Month, graduation/Father_s Day/summer reading/Christmas, and back again to those shamrock displays, Shea lived and breathed books in a place she says sells "ideas, stories, encouragement, answers, solace, validation, the basic ammunition for daily life."

    4 out of 5 stars Worth reading........2006-09-01

I would venture to say that any lover of books has toyed with the idea of working at the mecca for bibliophiles, a bookstore. Strempek Shea -- not just any book lover but also a bestselling author -- shows us what it's like on the other side of the cash register.

Shea has a way with words, and her turns of phrase are always skillful and often unexpected. I enjoyed the way she wove details about the publishing business with the details about the inner workings of the store and its many colorful characters.

She did seem testy at times, particularly when describing her reaction to some customers' requests. And I found her denigration of Bill O'Reilly to be unwarranted (what happened to nonjudgment??). And it was interesting that she -- who is so sensitive about her own name being spelled correctly -- misspelled the title of Mitch Albom's "Tuesdays with Morrie."

Those are just minor peeves, though, and overall I give this book a high rating. If you love the written word, you'll love this book .

2 out of 5 stars Another Ho Hum Personal Memoir.......2006-01-11

I picked up this book because I thought it's setting in a bookstore would be interesting. However, it turned out to be just another ho hum personal memoir. Cancer surviving writer is lifted out of her depressed state and brought back to life when a bookstore owning friend calls and asks her to work a few hours a week in the store. The reader does get an interesting tidbit or two about the book publishing and book selling industries, but most of it is an awfully boring recitation of book signing tours or setting up displays for yet another holiday in the bookstore. The author's glib tone is annoying beyond belief and hardly endeared herself to me as a warm human being. The book lacks any organization that I can see and the author seems to have a problem crafting a complete sentence. The book abounds with incomplete ones. Nor do I understand the subtitle of the book as no romance, mystery or drama figures in the book. If you want to read a really fine personal memoir about the world of books I heartily recommend Michael Dirda's, "Open Book".

    4 out of 5 stars I felt like I was there!.......2005-08-21

Suzanne's book: Shelf Life was a very enjoyable read for me. Having grown up in Western Massachusetts, and a life-long book-lover, I frequented many of the quaint, unique bookstores she mentions throughout this wonderful book.

    Thanks Suzanne!

    1 out of 5 stars Un bookish Un-fun book.......2005-07-06

The book reads like a shallow, way too long magasine article.
The shop seems to specialize in self help books, so there's hardly a literary feel to it. The style too is annoying.
For example, she writes that "her dad wasn't big on books".
I would have expected a slightly "bigger" vocabulary then that.

2 out of 5 stars Reads like a first draft.......2005-06-14

I will confess that part of the reason Ms. Shea's writing style bothers me so much is that it reminds me of my own...at least before I get down to the serious business of revising and editing, which she seems to have skipped. Her intelligence and energy do shine through, but she goes off on long, book-reportish tangents about nearly every title she comes across (and she works in a bookstore, remember), without even going into more depth than the back cover blurbs. There is no logical organization or progression of ideas, personalities or events; it's a lot like listening to random breakroom chatter. News flash; it's not so very uncommon for authors to work (or to have worked) in bookstores. This type of environment draws literary types. She acts like she's the sole human being ever to have attempted such a groundbreaking step. Get over yourself.

      Book Description

From the gumbos of Louisiana to the Carolina rice islands, from the introduction of pasta to the rise of the ubiquitous peanut, African-American cooks have placed an indelible stamp on American food. Angela Shelf Medearis has collected more than 250 treasured recipes, including native African dishes, Caribbean-influenced foods, Southern and soul food staples, and contemporary favorites, all testifying to the exciting variety of this abundant tradition. From Africa come Ghanaian Kelewele, (spicy plantain fritters) and Ethiopian Yemiser Selatta, a lentil salad. From the Caribbean, Jamaican Stamp and Go codfish cakes and Haitian Griots, savory marinated chunks of pork. Out of the slave quarters and plantation kitchens where African cooks presided, we get Hoppin' John, Ham with Red-Eye Gravy, Beaten Biscuits, and Peach Cobbler. For holidays and celebrations, there are special menus including Kwanzaa Blessing Soup and Christmas Molasses Taffy, as well as time-honored treats from church socials and family reunions like Picnic Potato Salad, Raisin-Pecan Pie, and much, much more. The text is enlivened with African and Southern sayings, quotations from 19th-century cooks' manuals, and personal and family reminiscences, all bringing the rich African-American culinary heritage to life. The African-American Kitchen is packed with the traditions of generations of cooks who have always created and preserved their culture through food and the families it nourishes. More than a cookbook, it is a living history and a loving testament of pride.

I absolutely love this book. I collect cookbooks and have an extensive collection from around the world and this is by far one of my favorites. The author traces her heritage through story and food from Africa through the West Indies, the Carribean and the southern plantations of the U.S. This is a book not too be missed. It is a shame it is no longer in hardcover because I just loaned mine out and never got it back. Anyone who likes good food needs this book!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start Reading Yoder; A Must Read.......2007-06-28

This is the book that helped me try to start following Jesus again, helped me to believe in God again, and helped give me the courage and inspiration to suggest the idea of a Pentecostal Charismatic Peace Fellowship.

I can without doubt say that this book has tremendously influenced my life and I am grateful for the biblical, theological, and Jesus centered approach that Yoder provides.

5 out of 5 stars Superbly argued Essays on Christian Pacifism.......2004-02-09

This was the first book I read by John Howard Yoder, when I was first considering if there was something to this Christian pacifism idea. Suffice it to say that I was not disappointed. This little book contains some of the most tightly argued and well written cases for Christian Pacifism that I have ever encountered. While Yoder is best known for his magisterial "The Politics of Jesus", this book contains some far more philosophically-minded, logical and systematic defenses of Christian Pacifism.

The book is divided into two sections, one focusing on Biblical perspectives and the other on "Ecumenical Perspectives", which could perhaps have been better labled as Ecclesial perspectives. All of the material in this book has been reproduced elsewhere (in "The Royal Priesthood") with the exception of chapter 4, "if Abraham is our Father." This is one of the most notable chapters in the book, offering an excellent treatment of Holy War in Ancient Israel. Other chapers of note include "The Political Axioms of the Sermon on the Mount", a section of Scripture not emphasized in The Politics of Jesus and "Christ, the Light of the World" which features an incisive christological critique of Just-War Theory.

All in all, this is one of the best collections of essays on Christian Pacifism that one could hope to read. Any Christian wrestling with these important issues should definiately read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Essays on Pacifism... but read "The Politics of Jesus" first.......2002-04-20

John Howard Yoder's collection of essays in "The Original Revolution" approaches the topic of religious pacifism on many fronts. It is a disjointed grouping, a fact which Yoder readily admits in his introduction, but it thereby allows for a fuller treatment of his convictions.

OVERVIEW: The book is divided into two sections. The first deals with Biblical perspectives of war and peace. From the political options which the inauguration of Jesus' kingdom might have taken to Yoder's discussion of the continuity of the Bible's teachings on war from the Old Testament to the New, this section remains firmly rooted in the Biblical witness and delves deeply into the world of the text.
The second section then deals with the ramifications of the first. Once the church has accepted a nonresistant Jesus, what will she do with him? Yoder suggests that we should proudly claim the position of Jesus, not because it is efficacious, but because it is obedient to Jesus' witness. The claim that "Jesus is Lord" is also the claim that "we are not." As such, it is no longer our place to see that history works out in the way we see fit (the self-conception of Christianity since Constantine), but rather simple obedience to Jesus, and thereby, a forceful proclamation of his gospel, his revolution.

"The Original Revolution" provides a vision of Yoder's view on pacifism, from its origin to its manifestation. It challenged my traditional views on war and led to greater reflection on the claim not only of Jesus' teaching, but also of his life.

        Book Description

Newbery Honor author Gary Paulsen has long been an ardent supporter of books, reading, and literacy programs. To further the cause of ProLiteracy Worldwide, he asked prominent authors to write an original story; the only restriction was that each story was to include mention of a book. The result is this collection, Shelf Life: Stories by the Book. From Jennifer L. Holm's story of a girl on Mars trying desperately to return to Earth to Gregory Maguire's domestic intrigue; from Kathleen Karr's story of a thief in turn-of-the-century Chicago to M. T. Anderson's mysterious shipboard adventure; from A. LaFaye's tale of magical wonderment to Marion Dane Bauer's story of doing good, this volume provides a full range of reading for every taste. Other authors featured here are Joan Bauer, Ellen Conford, Margaret Peterson Haddix, and Ellen Wittlinger.

Sales of this book benefit ProLiteracy Worldwide, an international network with more than 1,400 programs in the United States and 79 partner programs abroad, whose mission is to change lives through literacy.

My fourth grader checked this out of the school library and we are reading it together. The stories are smart and engaging and each one gives us something to think and talk about afterwards. We especially loved "Follow the Water" by Jennifer L. Holm - emotionally complex and heartbreaking, we'll be talking about this one for awhile. Great book, great cause. We're buying our own copy.

5 out of 5 stars 10 stories for every age.......2004-02-09

A great set of stories by ten well-known juvenile fiction writers including:

In Your Hat by Ellen Conford where a procrastinating joker gets his just desserts

Escape by Margaret Peterson Haddix in which a homeless girl learns even more hard lessons about life

Follow the Water by Jennifer L. Holm, a sci-fi special about a young girl on Mars who misses her grandmother

Testing, Testing, 1...2...3 by A. Lafaye in which a young boy encounters a special kind of learning through magic

Tea Party Ends in Bloody Massacre, Film at 11 by Gregory Maguire, a humorous story of an under-the-table eavesdrop and its unexpected end

What's a Fellow to Do? by Kathleen Karr is a historical and emotional journey of a young pick-pocket and his unusual discovery

Wet Hens by Ellen Wittlinger in which best friends have a falling out

The Good Deed by Marion Dane Bauer that describes the beginning of some very special friendships

Barcarole for Paper and Bones by M.T. Anderson, an esoteric and challenging story involving a mysteriously deserted ship

        and

Clean Sweep by Joan Bauer in which a young girl working in the family business helps an elderly client make a reconciliation

All ten wonderful, engaging, important stories for young readers will be welcome by those who are already familiar with these authors but more importantly, Shelf Life is a great introduction for readers who may be more reluctant about getting into an entire novel or just have difficulty reading in general. Plus sales benefit ProLiteracy Worldwide. How can you go wrong with this one?

"Ten original stories to benefit proliteracy worldwide"

The subtitle says most, but not all.

In addition to being a good cause, the stories are all intriguing, some truly excellent! (I particularly liked "Follow the Water," referring to there being none on the colony on Mars, and "In Your Hat," concerning a boy who didn't do his book report--yet.)

We can only be glad that for now, some companies still proudly assert their independence from English-language mores by naming canned fish Atum Bom or butter Noisy. Here, in glorious full color, are examples of such accidentally amusing packaging collected from shelves all over the world.

"Shelf Life" is a strange book. Strangely, I expected words.
But I will look through it and later, in a few months, I will look through it again. There is a lot to absorb..

        5 out of 5 stars A book pak-kidge.......2004-11-15

Clearly a book for all package designers' bookshelves and as it is rather nicely designed and printed the rest of us could well keep it somewhere. The foibles of the English language make an obvious trap for the unwary foreign brand-manager, why is a French butter called Noisy or a Dutch beer called Slag? Of course many of these products just use the language of the country (like a Polish sugar called Wars) that is spelt the same but has an entirely different meaning in English.

The book does look rather good though. The 113 packages are displayed mostly one to a page (with perhaps just a bit too much white space surrounding them) the page numbers are created from those little sticker price tags and the index is a handsome spread with a small square photo section of each package. If I have a criticism it is that turning the tiny type captions sideways in the top left corner of each spread makes them awkwardly unreadable.

So, a fun title for creative professionals who can ponder on why a Ugandan body spray (page 129) is called Prison.
