5 out of 5 stars Superb book for learning SQL and database basics.......2006-10-24

I was trying to learn SQL and database basic. I have been looking to several different books and I was lacking a book that would systematicaly explain data base and SQL basics. This is the book. Chapters regarding Data Retrival are just right, not to short and not to long. Just right.

I recomend the book to somebody that would like to learn SQL and DB2 basics.

5 out of 5 stars Best book available for DBAs working with DPF .......2006-06-27

I used this book to write Exam 704 (Advance DB2 UDB DBA certification). I cleared the exam with flying colors.
I consider this book as DB2 UDB Bible. This is one of the some good books on DB2 UDB.
Also recommend to DBAs who are not preparing for certification since it covers almost all the aspects of DB2 database.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best DB2 book!.......2004-05-18

I just found this book, and after reading it wish I had found this years ago. This is the most comprehensive book on DB2 that I have ever seen. This book has already saved me a lot of time. The performance chapter is great and helped me improve the performance of my DB2 server by over 30% in less than a week.

This is the book I was waiting for long on DB2UDB. This not only covers topics for certifications but also good (very good) reference material for all UDB DBAs on LUW platform.

5 out of 5 stars The best DB2 book out there.......2007-02-07

If you have to own one DB2 book (Linux,Unix,Windows) , buy this one. Usually I end up buying 2 books. The first being a book being very visual and easy to read but lacking any real detail and practical knowledge. The second book is usually a scary developers guide which is extremely thorough but requires a PHD to read it, or you end up using it as a reference.

This book hits dead on!! Incredibly easy to read with examples and visuals that make understanding difficult concepts easy, but its encompasses every important concept in DB2 with plenty of detail. I love this book and recommend it to anyone looking for the DB2 book to buy. Of course there are times you will need to access DB2 Info Center when you need very specific detail, but this book will provide you on the right track and explain how you got there perfectly. Hats off to the authors of this one.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-01-11

I would highly recommend this book as both a beginning level resources as well as a shelf reference for the more experienced DBA. I love the format and layout. This makes it easy to find what you need.

2 out of 5 stars Not for Mainframe DB2.......2006-06-23

I should have done my homework before i bought this book. If you are using db2 on the mainframe im not sure you will find this book too helpful as it caters to windows and linux users. Im very new to db2 and did not find this book that helpful as far as laying down the basics.

5 out of 5 stars DB2 Simplified.......2006-06-16

I found this book extremely comprehensive. The use of screen captures in partnership with textual descriptions are so much better. Bravo to those who took the time to create a fantastic learning and reference tool!

5 out of 5 stars The book lives up to its name.......2006-04-18

This book has something for every level of DB2 expertise from beginner to intermediate to expert. The books name implied there would be lots of visual images and the books was loaded with charts, pictures and screenshots. These make learning about DB2 much easier and more fun, than reading plain text.

Every chapter in the book had some nuggets of information that seemed to be hidden in other resources. I did have some favorite chapters, though. I have worked with partitioned databases for some time and it is one of the more complicated features in DB2. I found their section on database partitions to be exceptionally clear. I found the chapter on connectivity scenarios to be especially useful. They covered just about every scenario I could think of and through pictures, made it seem simple. Security in DBMS's is quite complex and DB2 is no exception. The authors did a great job of using pictures, to make it much easier to understand. Their big picture of DB2 security certainly expresses at least 1,000 words worth of knowledge.

Even if you are not studying for a certification test, the questions at the end of each chapter are great for helping cement what you learned in the chapter.

I'm hoping that the authors are busily preparing a new edition of the book to teach about the next version of DB2, code-named Viper.

5 out of 5 stars Two Beautiful Ladies--But inside or Outside?.......2007-08-02

Snow White is beautiful. Too beautiful. At least that is the feeling of the queen who is beautiful, too, but insists on being MOST beautiful in the kingdom. And Snow White, without even trying, is becoming more beautiful as time goes on. "So, there is only one thing to do," thinks the jealous queen: "kill Snow White." But try as she might, again and again, Snow White lives on. "Curses," thinks the queen, "there must be a way."

5 out of 5 stars Ravishingly beautiful. .......2005-07-03

I found a copy of this version of Snow White in the school library in Japan where I was teaching, and took it home to read to my boys. Later, I photographed the pages and showed slides to my Japanese students, using these illustrations to explain the surface, psychological, and spiritual meaning of the Grimm's stories. Of Grimm illustrators, I think Hyman is best, and while her illustrations of Rapunsel, Living Water, etc, are wonderful, this is her most inspired work.

First of all, the paintings take my breath away. Unlike the Disney figures, one can understand why the Mirror on the Wall thought these two ladies beautiful, and why the prince fell in love with Snow White! Hyman uses light brilliantly, beautifully, and with subtlety. Wow! My students liked them, too.

Also, Hyman seems to be one of those rare souls who picks up on the spiritual level of the Grimm tale. None of the other reviewers has mentioned the allegorical nature of Snow White, and I don't want to ruin the story for anyone. But if this interests you, pay close attention to numbers, temptations, candles, the mirror, especially the final mirror image, and the face of the King's Son. Hyman has drawn so subtly that it is possible to entirely overlook this quality and thoroughly enjoy her art, as an atheist may enjoy, say, the Chronicles of Narnia. Nor am I even sure she was a Christian. But she may have picked up on something intended by the Brothers Grimm. (For details, see Ronald Murphy's The Owl, the Raven, and the Dove: The Religious Meaning of the Grimm's Magic Fairy Tales. Or see my upcoming article in Books and Culture, "How the Brothers Grimm Overthrew the Evil Empire.")

Lay all that aside, though, and this is still one of the most lovely children's books I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars A nice twist to the fairy tale.......2002-03-25

This is the well-known story of a princess whose evil stepmother tries to have her killed. The huntsmen could not go through with it and tells Snow White to run away. When she does she finds herself in the company of seven small men. They live in a house very happily until the queen finds that Snow White is not dead. She finds Snow White and tricks her into eating a poisoned apple. Snow White dies. She is awoken from her death by the kiss of a prince and they live happily ever after.
The reason I enjoyed this version of Snow White more than others that I have read was that is was not as much of a fairy tail like story and more of a darker approach to it. The seven dwarfs, for example, are not shown as happy little creatures that sing and dance all day long. They are merely shown as small, kind men. The illustrations in this book are so beautiful even though they are not the bright colors that would usually go along with this story.

5 out of 5 stars Snow White.......2001-07-07

Parents looking for a good edition of "Snow White" need look no further than this one by Paul Heins and Trina Schart Hyman. One day a beautiful, yet proud and arrogant, queen stands before her magic mirror and asks: "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is most beautiful in the land?" Instead of replying as usual that she is the beautifulest, the mirror informs the queen that her stepdaughter, Snow White, has now surpassed her in beauty. Driven by envy and anger, the queen orders a hunter to take the girl into the woods to be killed. He decides to spare her life and presents the liver and lungs of a boar to the queen instead of Snow White's. Meanwhile Snow White takes shelter in the house of the seven dwarfs. The scene when the dwarfs return home is reminiscent of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" with the dwarfs asking "Who has taken some of my bread?", "Who has been using my little fork?", and discovering the girl asleep in one of the beds. They allow her to stay. When the queen discovers Snow White is still alive, she tries to get rid of her in a variety of ways: bodice laces that cut one's breath, a poisoned comb and finally a poisoned apple. The fairy tale obviously has a happy ending. There are two scenes in the tale that parents or children might find disturbing. One is when the queen cooks and eats the liver and lungs, thinking they are Snow White's. Second, at the end, when the wicked queen is made to dance in red hot shoes until she falls dead. Other than that the story is well told and the illustrations are magnificent---detailed with rich and vivid colors. I especially liked the one where the queen, disguised as a peddler, is tying Snow White's bodice laces. A wonderul story to add to your child's collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Snow White.......1999-09-10

I read this book when I was seven years old and have never forgotten it. Having been raised with Disney, I had never known what a real fairy tale was . . . at least, not the original tales. This book tells the story the way it ought to be told. I think that I can honestly say that this book started me on my love of fantasy novels and folk literature.

5 out of 5 stars My Whole Family Loves This Book.......2004-08-10

This story is delightful. We bought it because we were taking our 2.5 yr old along on a ski trip and wanted him to have a silly little story that related to the mountain and skiing (even though he's not on skis yet). Well, it is just that... and more. He's learned a lot, developed an interest in skiing (maybe next year) and always gets a good laugh out of this book! It's also fun that George seems to invent snowboarding - my husband and I got a big kick out of that and have shared the story with many adult friends (isn't everyone a Curious Geroge fan?)!
IMPORTANT: The structure of the story and the illustrations maintain the integrity of the original series!!

5 out of 5 stars My daughter wants all the books now!.......2007-07-08

My daughter is 9 and has Asperger's syndrome, or high functioning autism. She collects feathers, and the weather is one of her IMPORTANT subjects. She reads fast, and finished this book quickly.... and informed me that she needs to read the rest of them so could I please help her get them right away? The story itself is a little intense because the goblin is actually trying to hit Storm and girls with lightning, but of course it all comes out okay in the end. We will definitely read the other books in the series!

5 out of 5 stars Got My Daughter Interested in Reading Again.......2007-05-07

We've been struggling for a way to get my daughter to read now that she's run out of Junie B. Jones books. The Weather Fairies books have done the trick. She seems to enjoy reading again for the first time in half a year or more.

I have to say I haven't read any of the Weather Fairies myself but I caught my twelve-year-old son reading the series because his sister had obviously liked it. He said he wanted to read more, too.

5 out of 5 stars We love the Rainbow Magic series.......2007-02-06

My soon-to-be 5 year old daughter and I LOVE this series. The stories are simple enough and short enough (about 40 min) to hold her attention as a read aloud, and there are enough illustrations peppered throughout to give her something to look at as I read. Both the stories and the illustrations are delightful. These books have ignited a passion for reading in my daughter, and she is now extremely motivated to read on her own so she doesn't have to wait for me to read them to her. We can hardly wait for the rest of the series to be published in the US. There are also the Jewel Fairies, the Pet Fairies, and the Party Fun Fairies that are only available in the UK right now, but it looks like some of them will be published here this summer. You can be sure we will be pre-ordering them!

5 out of 5 stars We love it!!.......2006-12-23

My seven-year old daughter Clare has read 12 books by Daisy Meadows and we've ordered several more. She especially liked Crystal the Snow Fairy. It has great pictures. Some of her other favorites include: Pearl the Cloud Fairy and Heather the Violet Fairy. What a great series!

5 out of 5 stars Doodle's magic feathers lost!.......2006-10-13

I love this book! I would recommend this book for ages 5 and up. In this book Jack Frost's evil goblins stole Doodle's, the rooster who gives the weather faries their weather feathers so they can control the weather in FairyLand, tail feathers which are the weather feathers! Kirsty and Rachel are best friends, who are friends with the fairies so they can help! Their first mission is in this book when they have to find Crystal the snow fairies weather feather. This old-fashioned tale about one little snowplow's determination in the face of a small-town blizzard has all the charm and moral grit of The Little Engine That Could. This isn't surprising, considering that Caldecott Medal-winning author Virginia Lee Burton (The Little House) specializes in bringing the inanimate to life with endearing illustrations and stories of fortitude and vulnerability. Katy, a red crawler tractor, "could do a lot of things," Burton explains early on. In the summer she is a bulldozer, helping to build and repair roads in the city of Geoppolis. In the winter, she turns into a snowplow, waiting and waiting for her chance to be useful. Most of the winters, though, the snowfalls are mild and the town doesn't need Katy. But when the big one finally hits, the town is buried in page after page of powder. The power lines are down. The doctor can't get his patient to the hospital. The fire department can't reach a burning house! "Everyone and everything was stopped but... KATY!" Suddenly, the entire community is dependent on one little snowplow. Children love witnessing Katy's shining moment of glory and will inevitably admire her "chug, chug, chug" endurance. (Ages 4 and older) --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars a story for generations ..........2007-02-09

As a little girl this was my favorite book. My parents read it to me over and over. My mom saved it all these years and recently first read it to my 3 1/2 yr old nephew. He now shares my love of this story and asks Grandpa to read it to him all the time.

The story is very well written and illustrations are wonderful for little kids to follow along with.

5 out of 5 stars Katy Will Not Stop!.......2006-11-24

Katy is a municipal snow plow serving a small village who is hit by a massive snow storm. Adults who think it silly that machines are made to behave like people in picture books should remember the little engine that could. Katy has no doubt that she can tackle any snow, and when a massive snow storm hits, she is called to duty. The firemen, the police, the doctors, the postmaster, and others all cry out for help from Katy. When Katy began to tire, she pressed on - she wouldn't stop. She is the heroine who saves the village.

What makes this book more than interesting is that the author is also the illustrator, which means that there is thought behind these illustrations that they should intertwine with the dramatic plot of the text. Each illustration shows the trails plowed through the snow by Katy. With each progressive illustration, the trails become more numerous and complex to where they begin to look like maps. These illustrations partner nicley with the text to produce an emerging cadence in the dialogue.

We love this book, it's our absolute favorite Virginia Lee Burton book. My children always seem inspired and excited by the story of the snow plow that nothing could stop!

As always, her illustrations are marvelous (and with the more modern bright colors, it's nice to let your children enjoy the black and white palette), and the story of not giving up is a great message for children. It also makes those winter days when it seems like you'll never get out a little more hopeful.

5 out of 5 stars Classic children's tale.......2006-03-16

This is of course by the same author as "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel," and just as delightful. Appeals to girls and boys alike, and as your child grows, (s)he will find more and more in the book -- maps of the town, buildings' names, names of machine parts, and more. Strongly recommended, even for those unfamiliar with "Mike Mulligan."

3 out of 5 stars Not Burton's Best - a review of "Katy and the Big Snow".......2006-01-25

I have to agree with the other 3-Star Reviewer. This is not one of Burton's best books. My children (boy and girl; almost 4 and 6) didn't care much for it. There is none of the usual clamoring for another read.

And as the other Reviewer noted, there is a lack of 'personification' for Katy. Her character just doesn't seem as rich as some of Ms. Burton's other equipment (or buildings-lol).

And plowing, followed by more plowing, is just not all that interesting even if it is helping a doctor and a mailman.

Three Stars. If you already have Ms. Burton's other books and like them, take a chance on this book. But if you are looking for a Burton-first story, try another like "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel" or even "The Little House."

Book Description

"Long ago, in the time of the old emperor, I was young and just beginning in my profession. The Usurper was there, and one could not escape his evil presence.... An enthralling story in the time-honored tradition of Lewis Carroll and C. S. Lewis. Although her kingdom has lived in peace for many years, the queen has always feared the day the Usurper would return to plunge her city into darkness. Even as she rejoices in the birth of her first child, she sees signs of impending danger. Her husband and his army have vanished in the wilderness. With only a short time left to reinforce the kingdom's defense, her faithful general masterminds a strategy to keep the city safe, against great odds. But even when the Usurper's victory may seem to be complete, the mysterious veil of snows hides a symbol of undying hope. The Veil of Snows is a moving and powerful tale about the light of the human spirit, light that can never be wholly extinguished. The Veil of Snows, which stands on its own as a compelling story, also completes the Helprin/Van Allsburg trilogy that began with their first collaboration, Swan Lake, which Publishers Weekly called "elegant and beautiful...wise and musical." As Kirkus noted in a pointered review of A City in Winter, the second book, "The sheer scale of the city [Helprin] envisions will enthrall readers of any age...." Mark Helprin is the acclaimed author of books for adults and children, including A Soldier of the Great War and the best-selling Winter's Tale (both Harcourt). He lives in New York state. Chris Van Allsburg is a two-time Caldecott winner, for Jumanji and The Polar Express (both Houghton).

5 out of 5 stars Helprin delivers an elegant masterpiece.......2000-09-12

In "Veil" Mark Helprin and Chris Van Allsburgh offer up a mythic tale which, while dark, will disturb and delight readers of all ages (though the elegant, sometimes labrynthine prose style will probably appeal more to older, more sophisticated readers). This book (as well as its predecessor, "A City In Winter,") is no doubt destined to become a classic, both to fans of fantasy and of children's literature for its moving story and its religious/philosophical themes.

Van Allsburgh's illustrations, while charming, are not essential to the understanding of the story, often interrupting the imaginitave "flow" of the prose itself. However, younger readers will still appreciate the bright, colorful images.

With this title, Mark Helprin has solidified his reputation as one of, if not the, premier American fantasists, a reputation which began with the mythic "Winter's Tale." It will remind Helprin fans why they are fans to begin with, and is no doubt destined to create some new ones.

5 out of 5 stars extremely enjoyable triumph of the human spirit.......2000-08-04

having listened to this book on audio cassette i have nothing but good things to say for the narrator and writer. I loved this story and have listened to it more than once. I can only hope the author will do us the honor of continuing this trilogy.

Finding something with little or no bad language is challenge enough these days but to get to hear and/or read something of this caliber is a joy unto itself. please Mr Helprin write another installment of the story. please please please

In all honesty I am 25 years old very well read in varios topics of interest to me but still this book deserves credit.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty and Ugly Truth as well.......2000-01-15

A simply incredible book of hard-to-find wonder. Unlike some of the others, my husband and I liked the Tookyshiem parts best. The queen's speech against them was a classic. At least that's my opinion. A gem of a book. They should reprint the prequels!

2 out of 5 stars mostly lousy, some good bits........2000-01-09

Helprin is one of my absolute favorites, but not when he writes second-rate material like this. Less a novella than a gloomy satire on...things Helprin doesn't like (media, ideology, computers, progressive education [! ]), this book reveals a great visionary to be a great crank as well. Reread Winter's Tale or Swan Lake instead.

5 out of 5 stars Stirring story, beautiful writing.......1999-11-12

This book appeared the summer before my third year of college; my mother and I read it aloud to each other while we moved me out of the house, expecting entertainment, but finding so much more than only that. The prose is simply incredible, and I don't know that I've encountered such exquisite writing anywhere else. I'm entirely disappointed that the prequels are out of print.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Images.......2007-05-24

I use this book every year in my preschool art classes. The images are just wonderful. The kids always love to figure out what the "snowthings" are made out of. It's a little bit of hide and seek before they get to working on wonderful art of their own. The story is simple and a quick read, but the pictures can be captivating.

5 out of 5 stars 3-year-olds love it!.......2007-03-13

I'm a preschool teacher and this book has become a regular part of our classroom curriculum--we had to replace our old copy as it had become ragged with use. We use it during the winter months to begin conversations about the season, but we also love the way it elicits discussion about creativity, part and whole, different uses for everyday objects and even family. It's a beautiful book.

5 out of 5 stars SNOWBALLS.......2007-01-11

Lois Ehlert has created a great winter book for children. Good story and art and the kids have a great time searching for the items that were used to create the snow family.

5 out of 5 stars A great read-aloud book!.......2006-02-18

This is an excellent book for reading aloud, especially to a group of toddlers! It's light and easy to hold. The text is large and clear. There is a nice rhythm to the simple and concise sentences. The colorful collage illustrations are almost all double-page vertical, easy to see from a distance, and consist of objects children will be anxious to point out and identify. At the end of this simple story about building a snowman there is a section that pictures and identifies the items used in the collages: buttons, fabrics, fruits, buttons, etc. It's perfect for a game of: "where can you find this [bell] in the story?" "How many of these [seeds] can you find?", and perfect as a springboard for a snowman craft using items from your own sack of 'good stuff'. There is also an explanation of snow with photographs of real snowmen, and directions for making popcorn balls. This book is fun to read and look at, well worth reading over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Epic Samurai Adventure.......2003-06-22

Ron Martz and Bart Sears have constructed a cinematic tale about
a monk who becomes a reluctant warrior. Sears gritty art style fits the story's timeframe and locale. There are grand battle scenes and interseting characterizations in this tale mixed with samurai action and fantasy . A great way to jump on this ongoing title from the Crossgen Universe.

Book Description

Now that her bond with Toya has healed her heart, Chiyuki wants to live her life to the fullest. What she doesn't know is that Toya has refused to make the full partnership with her. He doesn't want to doom her to a thousand years of life. Chiyuki swore to Toya that she would never leave him alone, but is that a promise she'll be able to keep?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It just keeps getting better!.......2007-06-29

Chiyuki and Toya's story just keeps getting deeper and more fun. Chiyuki, a girl with a severe heart condition and a knack for attracting unusual guys goes skiing in Switzerland. Because of Toya's hatred for the cold and their tag-a-long werewolf's lousy sense of direction, the three of them predictably get lost. Between a blizzard, ghostly encounters of the haunted mansion kind and Toya's weakness resulting from lack of blood intake, the trio has quite the adventure before them as they try to find their way back to the airport.

I can't praise Bisco Hatori's manga enough! Between Millenium Snow and Ouran High School Host Club, Volume 1 I'm a devoted fan! She took a hiatus from this title to creat Host Club, but I hope and pray she returns to it soon! (Not so soon that she gives up OHSHC, but you know what I mean.) I just can't wait to see what other high jinx she has instore for these loveable characters!
