5 out of 5 stars All this Roz Chast in one place? For ME!?!.......2007-09-14

This collection of Roz Chast cartoons brings me great joy and delight. It's fun to watch the evolution of her particular "style" from her earlier works to recent years. All of my favorites are here (i.e. "Inside One's Memory Bank", etc.) Some people don't "get" her, and that's fine with me ("Can't come to the U.S. to buy property -- I have to finish Scrubbing This Teakettle!") She draws some of my favorite cartoon facial expressions ever and I have a secret dream of someday owning an actual cartoon she penned or seeing my likeness as drawn by Roz. Those fantasies may never happen, but in the meantime I forked over the bucks for this great big old book and am so glad that I did. Where else can I relish a world of "Bad Mom" magazine and "The kid who learned about math on the street"?

5 out of 5 stars Lamp Lovers Unite!.......2007-08-04

Like Pablo Picasso, Roz Chast is a prolific genius. But unlike Pablo, Roz is FUNNY!!!

5 out of 5 stars A lot of entertainment for Roz Chast fans.......2007-07-10

Whenever I pick up the New Yorker, I always search first for Roz Chast cartoons. I love her sense of humor. The book is a great value - hours of entertainment. Roz Chast fans will not regret making this investment.

5 out of 5 stars Theories of Everything Exceeeds Expectations.......2007-05-21

I've been a fan of Roz Chatz's work for just about 30 years. This amazing compendeum does not dissapoint. It's more than just looking at cartoons. It's a real READ. I spent about two or three weeks perusing this volume. Unlike most "cartoon books" this one has intellectual weight. It is both insightful and F U N N Y! If you are at all familiar with this artist/writer's work than THEORIES OF EVERYTHING is a must for your library.

4 out of 5 stars A very funny lady.......2007-05-15

I love the quirky, definitely neurotic humor to be found
in this treasure of cartoons. A great brouse when I need
a laugh.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Batman crossover titles.......2007-07-25

I'm a fan of both Batman and Predator. The plot is that a Predator is out hunting in Gotham and Batman must do everything he can to stop it. The art is fantastic and the words are well written. Dave Gibbons did a great job with combining these two characters. I've read the other two a long time ago, but this one is my favorite Batman vs crossover story. Once I get Part II and III, reviews for those will be coming up.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect combination of Batman and Predator.......2007-03-26

This is a very good comic book. If anyone has seen any of the Predator
movies, the one in this story matches that description perfectly. He
kills anyone that might even seem like a threat, and does it in a very
gruesome way. Batman shows that he is only human, and needs some help to
defeat the Predator. I recommend this book to any comic fan, but watch
for Bats vs. Pred 3, it sucks action wise compared to this one. I know,
because I read #3 first, and thought it was decent until I read #1.

5 out of 5 stars Not as good as Hush, but still great!.......2006-07-17

I am a big fan of both Batman and Predator, so as soon as I heard about this, I knew I had to get it. And guess what? IT WAS GREAT! A bit too bloody for my taste, but still very good! Now, if you'll excuse me, I hear purring outside (Hint, hint)... Probably just my cat... better go let him in...

5 out of 5 stars AWSOME.......2005-06-20

This has all the elements of a good predator movie and a good batman comic. A DEFINITE SUCCESSFUL blending of the two. It's almost like a Predator writer and a Batman writer got together one night and played make believe and then wrote it all down. LOL! Those writers, such kids at heart! LOL! If you like Batman you'll like this. If you like the Predator, then you'll like this. If you like them both, then this will be like CRACK to you. LOL :-)

5 out of 5 stars The Dark Knight vs the Intergalatic Headhunter.......2002-04-13

I could sum up this crossover comic in one word, intense. Brutally gorey, incredible story, and great art work makes this a classic in the realm of Comic books.

As the title implies this is Batman vs Predator, and basically in the beggining Batman does not stand a chance. The Predator seeks out prize fighters via through TV. He watches the TV and picks up the champs or powerful political figures for his victims. The exception being Batman. In the end it's up to Batman and his intelect, as well as fighting skills to take out one of the most dangerouse creatures in the universe.

If you are comic book fan, this is a must buy.

Book Description

Kochalka invented the daily diary comic strip, spawning a grass roots comix movement that has swept across the globe. Every day Kochalka draws a little comic strip about something that happened to him that day. As simple as that concept might seem, in Kochalka's hands it becomes something astounding and surprising; wickedly funny at times and deeply moving at others. This volume prints all the strips from 2004 and 2005 in gorgeous full-color.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Celebration Of Life.......2007-03-15

James Kochalka draws his comics in a minimalist fashion. At the same time, it could be argued that his American Elf strip is therefore closer to the artistry of the form - each pen stroke is closer to the original eye-to-hand portrayal than the most refined comic strip panel ever could be. Or at least, that's the overwhelming impression upon the reader (who frequently feels as if the same task could easily be replicated by him/her, yet so rarely is able to capture any such essence present in a single Kochalka panel).

To those unfamiliar with American Elf, it is best described as a daily comic strip diary of James Kochalka's life as lived through his surrogate character, "Magic Boy." Magic Boy is an elf whose life parallels that of Mr. Kochalka, from shared homestead, occupation, family, and even name. Though fully aware of the strip's presence in their daily lives, the characters in American Elf live "outside" the realm of the strip. From day to day, the predictability of the strip's format never denigrates into predictability of content - a one-liner from Kochalka's wife is given the same treatment as a close friend's wedding, an acknowledgment that even the most special days in a life are comprised of exactly the same units of time, though that day's events and emotions aren't subject to the same rules.

In short, American Elf is a celebration of life - and not just the happy, memorable bits. Rather than a self-absorbed look into his own daily accomplishments and observations, Mr. Kochalka presents some of the less-than-glamorous moments as well; a chat over the coffeepot, or a trip to the toilet, or a stroll along Lake Champlain, or a display of temper.

American Elf Book 2 varies from the epic Book 1 in two ways: it is vastly thinner than the original, and it is in full colour on glossy paper stock. That is not to say that Book 2 is inferior in any way. The colour artwork featured in this second book highlights the emotions captured in each strip, subtly stimulating a kind of visual euphoria. Though the book is comprised primarily of previously-released material (on the author's website), in many ways American Elf Book 2 is the superior format. The primary reason is that the paper format directly involves the reader, drawing him/her much closer to the source material, and thereby the artist's original sketchbook, providing a small feeling of exhilaration not otherwise present in electronic form.

Familiarity with James Kochalka's prior work is not necessary for a full, satisfying read (though it does enhance the experience). A beautiful book all on its own, American Elf Book 2 does not provide an intricate story line, nor a resolution with the final panel on the final page. On finishing the book, the reader is simply concluding the last strip (drawn on December 31st, 2005). But that's the essence of a human life after all, isn't it?

Based on its merits and creativity alone, this is one of the most important comic books ever presented in the independent realm. As for the element of human spirit celebrated herein - there simply is no method by which to measure. And the gratification bestowed upon the reader is unlike that of any other comics experience.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sha-zammm!.......2005-04-27

This was my first introduction to James Kochalka's beautiful work. I recommend his big American Elf book to anyone who wants to get an overall sense of who he is and what he does. The daily comics are deceptively simplistic because you only get a sense of the complete tapestry of James' life after reading several in a row. Eventually you get to know all about James, his wife Amy and his cat Spandy over the course of five years.
Our little elf (and even by his own admission he does look like an elf) is neither self-absorbed nor self-deprecating. This mosaic of daily life will leave you addicted and hungry for more excellent work from James Kochalka.
Also features a cute introduction from Moby.

5 out of 5 stars rhythms of life...........2005-04-18

This is a beautiful piece of work. Within these pages you see the diary comics of our Every-Elf. Lyrical in its poetic simplicity, we go on a journey following the life of Magic Boy, vicariously making sense of the rhythms of Kochalka's daily life, spanning the first five years since the inception of his diary comic. Delightful are the observations he shares, that range from profound to silly, from funny to plain. Neither self-grandising nor self-deprecating, here is a biographical piece that when taken in whole will leave you addicted and wanting more, because we recognize something that looks so simple on first glance, but is acually quite a feat--art not imitating, but rather capturing one of the many glistening beams that glow from this thing we know as life. Don't be fooled by each day's strip; taken separately they are deceptively facile, but step back and you see the wonderous mosaic we have been given via James Kochalka's Collected Sketchbook Diaries.

5 out of 5 stars His Best Work Yet!.......2004-07-26

I'm a huge fan of both his music and his comics, and this diary strip has entertained me for years. Finally collected, hopefully the world will see the genius behind this strange man. Similar to Peanuts in some ways, although not innocent, the ideas he captures have a simple, everyman quality, to which anyone can relate. Burlington, VT residents and visitors will see the town and its activities in new ways, and gain a further appreciation for them. If you only buy one item from James' vast output, this is the one to get. It captures a side of James that even your mother would enjoy.

It is a high quality print on each page, with many (literally a thousand or so) pages. There is the regular devil girls, devil guy, etc. but there is also numerous comic style pages and one-off pages with a subtle social comment in Coop's own way. Also look forward to cool cars drawn in an expressive way. Robots, characters and Ratfink are all in this book a lot too.

In the intro Coop explains these were never meant to be printed publicly, so are an uninhibited expression of his wondering thoughts.

Fans of Coop should buy this, also any budding artists especially of this style would be wise to purchase this as it gives an idea of how Coop mucks around and how they turn into the final products we all know.

Okay, i couldn't find a review for this book, a description, or anything... so i had no idea what it was when i ordered it. That is why i am writing this review. This is a collection of 4 books: "Beavis and Butthead Ensucklopedia", "Huh Huh for Hollywood", "The Butt-Files", and "Chicken Soup for the Butt". It's worth it, lots of funny stuff and plenty of pictures. A great item to add to your collection, especially if you don't have any or all of those books.

Book Description

A strange kind of genius inhabits the mind of this artist who loves the surreal and uses it to full advantage to skew pretension. Drawing in the style of 1930s adventure story illustrations, Glen Baxter captures the quirks and foibles of everyday events and ordinary strange people. Only Baxter would concoct Mexican Tofu: invert one sombrero, fill it with tofu, and let it stand for 38 minutes. (So perfect for those Super Bowl parties, since it serves 80). And when Eric hides in the jungle from his Nazi pursuers, we empathize with his remorse for not having returned overdue books to the library. From the gargantuan mound of salt on the main course (slightly oversalted) to the heap of ketchup slithering out of a keg (a dash for the eggs), to the twelve endangered fruits to the new ways to use vegetables, Baxter captures all the bizarre nuances of the alarmingly amusing. Mere words fail to describe the delights within this volume; Baxter scampers over a landscape filled with food, animals, fey cowboys, and the deranged denizens of Sherwood Forest.

There's truly no end to the humor of Glen Baxter. The introduction to this second volume--a short story about Baxter--sheds more light on this artist and his humor. To read him is to love him . . . and to guffaw, snort, chuckle, howl, snicker, and cackle. One can only wonder about volume three.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very subtle, thoughtful humor.......2007-06-27

The best cartoonists see the world in ways the rest of us do not. A simple, routine act committed by nearly everyone can be turned into an event of cosmic or humorous proportions. While the cartoons of Glen Baxter are certainly good, they lack the sheer absurdity power of people like Larson in "The Far Side." Baxter's cartoons are subtler in their delivery; in most cases a little bit of thought is necessary to understand the entire message.
The book also includes a few brief essays, the message in these pages is more difficult to discern. A combination of parody and satire, some of them are only a short distance above the level of nonsense. At times, it takes a careful reading to get to that point.
As the cartoons and text demonstrate, Baxter is indeed a bit unhinged, but in the entertaining sort of way. This is entertainment for the mind, as the point is often not immediately obvious, requiring the reader to actively seek out the message.

5 out of 5 stars Unhinged and off the hook.......2005-09-14

This book is absolutely delightful, especially if you've ever tried making an omelette with a hatchet. Glen Baxter is proof that there are still people out there who exist uncrushed by the mindlessness of today's society, people who don't mind wondering out loud what a Native American working on his English might say to the white teacher whose head happens to be on fire.

5 out of 5 stars sophisticated humor at its most absurd.......2003-10-21

Besides his delightfully cheeky artwork, Glen Baxter's captions can't help but make you laugh. If you appreciate the wry and weird, by all means buy this book, if only to learn a few synonyms for the word "said."

5 out of 5 stars Genius!.......2001-12-19

I'm a new convert to Baxter's work, but brother am I converted! From cowboys discussing modern art to strange trips through Imperialism and girl's schools, never has the tenuous connection between word and image been so funny. My favorites include the bandit with the bagel trunk and the man who checks his boulder. Gary Larson wishes he could be this clever.

5 out of 5 stars NO MIDDLE GROUND.......2003-04-08

To the best of my knowledge, Paul Conrad is the only political cartoonist to win three Pulitzer Prizes. I would really be surprised if any other political cartoonist had first made Richard Nixon's "Enemies List," then, only four years later been named to the Richard M. Nixon Chair at Whittier College, Nixon's alma mater. Conrad, himself, found this rather ironic.

Conrad was chief editorial cartoonist for "The Los Angeles Times" from the early 60's to the early 90's. In that period he created some of the most memorable political cartoons ever published.

Unabashedly liberal, he still found something about every President; Republican or Democrat, Liberal, Moderate or Conservative, that he deemed worth targeting. This book contains about 200 examples of his work, and he never misses his mark.

There is an old expression that "one picture is worth a thousand words." This observation holds true here. I'm going to try to describe a few of these 200 cartoons, but you'd have to see them for yourself to really appreciate them.

An example of his non-partisan president skewering is the cover cartoon which, drawn during Clinton's term, has caricatures of Presidents Nixon, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton with quotes from each as follows:

Nixon: "I am not a crook." --- Reagan: "I don't recall any Iran-Contra connection." --- Bush (Sr.): "I was not in the loop." --- and Clinton: "I did not have sex with that woman."

A few on non-presidential subjects:

On a drawing of two ragged children picking through a garbage pile behind a tenement building, "Speaking of child pornography . . . ."

A picture of an unbalanced scale shows a bullet on one side of the scale outweighing a huge pile of paper on the other side of the scale, labeled "one and a half million primary votes for Kennedy."

On a drawing of J. Edgar Hoover at the gates to heaven being sent away by St. Peter: Hoover, with a file labeled "God" under his arm is saying, "You'd better look at what I've got on him."

Conrad took on everyone and just about every issue, and, depending on who or what you loved or hated, you either loved or hated Conrad. There was no middle ground.
