Book Description

Parents will do almost anything to get their kids to eat healthier, but unfortunately, they've found that begging, pleading, threatening, and bribing don't work. With their patience wearing thin, parents will "give in" for the sake of family peace, and reach for "kiddie" favorites--often nutritionally inferior choices such as fried fish sticks, mac n' cheese, Pop-sicles, and cookies.

Missy Chase Lapine, former publisher of Eating Well magazine, faced the same challenges with her two young daughters, and she sought a solution. Now in The Sneaky Chef, Lapine presents over 75 recipes that ingeniously disguise the most important superfoods inside kids' favorite meals. With the addition of a few simple make-ahead purees or clever replacements, (some may surprise you!) parents can pack more fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants in their kids' foods. Examples of "Sneaky" recipes include:

-No Harm Chicken Parm
-Power Pizza
-Incognito Burritos
-Guerilla Grilled Cheese
-Brainy Brownies
-Health-by-Chocolate Cookies
-Quick fixes for Jell-O(R)

It's a book chock-full of strategies that will help any parent incorporate better health for the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC! BEST BUY FOR ALL PARENTS!!!.......2007-10-04

This book is fantastic for parents, grandparents and anyone who wants to improve the health of themselves or their loved ones! It can truly change lives and make meal-time a fun and delicious experience for the entire family. My family loves it and my friends are now also addicted as well. My only regret is not finding this book sooner! Great gift!

5 out of 5 stars Just what we needed!.......2007-09-30

I wanted to serve one meal to everyone in our family and quit playing short order chef. I never have wanted food to become a battleground for my kids. And, I wanted to incorporate more veggies and fiber in to all of our diets. This book has some fantastic ideas on how to alter my cooking to accomplish my goals.

I made macaroni and cheese last night and watched both my boys (2 and 3) devour sweet potatoes and carrots without a complaint. This stuff works. I cooked more carrots and sweet potatoes that I needed for the puree, and served some of the chunks on our plates. I enjoyed the cooked carrots, and my kids didn't throw the chunks of veggies off their plate onto the floor. One of them actually licked the carrot in curiousity. I'll continue to serve sneaky nutrition AND undisguised versions on the plate. Eventually, my kids will eat the undisguised versions.

What works for me is to plan on preparing ONE puree a day, preferably when it is quiet. I freeze the puree in ice cubes by the tablespoon, and then can add them as needed to recipes. I can rotate thru the purees and not feel overwhelmed. And if I skip a day or two, I have frozen reserves to fall back on. That also lets me make the purees using on-sale produce.

5 out of 5 stars Book is wonderful at upping the fiber in kids food!! I love you Missy!!.......2007-09-30

My son has a problem with constipation and I love this book. He got so constipated he missed school! Very picky eater, won't eat veggies. This is a god send. He loves the chocolate chip cookies (they have beans). So besides the vitamin issue, its really helpful for kids who need lots and lots of fibre. This is an awesome way to make high fibre foods. She has a flour blend with whole wheat. Some say this is not revolutionary, sure there are recipes out there with whole wheat pancakes but I *L*O*V*E* this because all the recipes are in one place. And the purees take a while but you can do it.

5 out of 5 stars it is pretty sneaky..........2007-09-29

The book has a lot of great ideas to get healthy foods into my son's diet. It makes me happy to think that he is getting the foods he likes and the nutrition he needs...

3 out of 5 stars Ok concept, poor exectution!.......2007-09-29

I have not made any of the recipes in the book and I am certainly NOT opposed to sneaking healthy things into foods, but I do have one HUGE problem with her "purees". The fact that she boils all of the nutrients out of the vegetables is pretty much defeating the purpose. Cooking spinach for 10 minutes takes most of the good stuff out and boiling carrots and sweet potatoes for 20 minutes--forget about it! I am not a nutritionist, but if this author is--shame on her!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of operations management.......2007-02-07

This book is comprehensive, up-to-date and well-written. The 'technical notes' appended to some chapters provide a little mathematical underpinning to discussions of topics like queuing theory, SPC, and linear programming, but the emphasis is on practical applications and there are plenty of worked examples.
The target audience deserves to be much greater than aspiring or actual manufacturing managers. By setting OM within a strategic context, by addressing both services and products, and by covering the entire product lifecycle, this book equips anybody concerned with performance improvement in any business with an indispensable toolbox. It's virtually an MBA in a box.

The Greatest Manhunt in American History

For 12 days after his brazen assassination of Abraham Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth was at large, and in Manhunt, historian James L. Swanson tells the vivid, fully documented tale of his escape and the wild, massive pursuit. Get a taste of the daily drama from this timeline of the desperate search.

April 14, 1865 Around noon, Booth learns that Lincoln is coming to Ford's Theatre that night. He has eight hours to prepare his plan.
10:15 pm: Booth shoots the president, leaps to the stage, and escapes on a waiting horse.
Secretary of War Edwin Stanton orders the manhunt to begin.
April 15 About 4:00 am: Booth seeks treatment for a broken leg at Dr. Samuel Mudd's farm near Beantown, Maryland. Cavalry patrol heads south toward Mudd farm.
Confederate operative Thomas Jones hides Booth in a remote pine thicket for five days, frustrating the manhunters.
April 19 Tens of thousands watch the procession to the U.S. Capitol, where President Lincoln lies in state. Wild rumors and stories of false sightings of Booth spread.
April 20 Stanton offers a $100,000 reward for the assassins, and threatens death to any citizen who helps them.
After hiding Booth in Maryland, Jones puts him in a rowboat on the Potomac River, bound for Virginia. More than a thousand manhunters are still searching in Maryland. In the dark, Booth rows the wrong way and first ends up back in Maryland.
April 20-24 Booth lands in the northern neck of Virginia, and Confederate agents and sympathizers guide him to Port Conway, Virginia.
April 24 Booth befriends three Confederate soldiers who help him cross the Rappahannock River to Port Royal and then guide him further southwest to the Garrett farm.
Union troops in Washington receive a report of a Booth sighting. They board a U.S. Navy tug and steam south, right past Booth's hideout at the Garrett farm.
April 25 The 16th New York Calvary, realizing their error, turns around and surrounds the Garrett farm after midnight that night.
April 26 When Booth refuses to surrender, troops set the barn on fire, and Boston Corbett shoots the assassin. Booth dies a few hours later, at sunrise.
April 26-27 Booth's body is brought back to Washington, where it is autopsied, photographed, and buried in a secret grave.

Book Description

The murder of Abraham Lincoln set off the greatest manhunt in American history. From April 14 to April 26, 1865, the assassin, John Wilkes Booth, led Union cavalry and detectives on a wild twelve-day chase through the streets of Washington, D.C., across the swamps of Maryland, and into the forests of Virginia, while the nation, still reeling from the just-ended Civil War, watched in horror and sadness.

James L. Swanson's Manhunt is a fascinating tale of murder, intrigue, and betrayal. A gripping hour-by-hour account told through the eyes of the hunted and the hunters, this is history as you've never read it before.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a great read... i was there!!.......2007-09-29

I have not read many books lately and have just started to get back to it. Manhunt was the latest book I read and it was AMAZING!! The vivid descriptions put you everywhere John W Booth and his cohorts are and makes for a fascinating depiction of history.

5 out of 5 stars Brings history to life..........2007-09-14

I enjoy nonfiction books that read like novels, and James L. Swanson's Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer provides a dose of history in an enjoyable format.

Manhunt didn't include much information about the assassination that I didn't already know. But I did learn quite a bit about the 12-day pursuit of John Wilkes Booth and the hunt for his conspirators, as well as some other assassination trivia. It was especially interesting in that my husband and I often travel this same path through Maryland and Virginia when driving south. We pass right by the historic marker near the Garrett house barn (where Booth was captured and killed), although we've never stopped to see the actual location.

Swanson does a commendable job of bringing the complex Booth to life. The author describes him as "impossibly vain, preening, emotionally flamboyant, possessed of raw talent and splendid elan." Yet, this handsome and charismatic actor was willing to sacrifice everything for "his cause." After the assassination, he was stunned and enraged to discover that his acts not only met with outrage, but also, made Lincoln a martyr. I was surprised to learn that on April 16, 1865, CSA Lt. General R. S. Ewell sent Secretary of War Stanton a letter that was cosigned by 16 other Confederate generals. In the letter, Ewell wrote of their "unqualified abhorrence and indignation" at Lincoln's killing. He claimed that they were shocked by this appalling crime and that Southern men "are not assassins" nor their "allies."

Manhunt has a good number of pictures, drawings, maps and photographs related to the assassination. He also includes an excellent Epilogue where he tells the "story after the story." Swanson also provides a poignant description of the events of that time. When Lincoln died at the Peterson house, a "crude, improvised coffin" was brought to transport his body back to the White House. The people in the street were upset. "The box looked like a shipping crate, not a proper coffin for a head of state. Lincoln would not have minded. He was always a man of simple tastes. This was the plain, roughly hewn coffin of a rail-splitter."

After reading Manhunt, I intend on reading an earlier work that Swanson co-wrote called Lincoln's Assassins: Their Trail and Execution.

5 out of 5 stars What a book..........2007-09-04

I bought this book for a teachers gift, he loves Lincoln and that whole period of our country's life. He said the book is one of the best he's ever read on the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Well written, a quick read........2007-09-03

As a person who's read quite a bit on Lincoln and his assination, I figured I should finally get around to this text. I've been telling people for years that Dr. Samuel Mudd's family lobbied for years to get Mudd's name cleared--that he was simply a physician treating a patient with a broken leg. A colleague of mine suggested that this book denies that. It does, indeed.

I read a lot but am a slower reader than I'd like. So I like a book (1) that doesn't have microscopic print and (2) keeps me interested. This qualified on both counts. I don't mean it was large print, like a children's book. But it didn't have so much detail that I could maybe win a trivia contest but be none the wiser.

In fact, one item that I liked most was that Thomas Jones apparently kept Booth and his accomplice, Davey Herold, in a pine thicket for something like four days and five nights. Jones was freed of any responsibility for harboring perhaps the most wanted man in the US for those 12 days, but told the truth some years later. (When he was selling a book admitting to that, he was apparently attacked by some Union veterans!)

Among the things I liked too about the book was the admission by the author that Lincoln was not particularly popular at the time of his assination. Indeed, Booth was discouraged after the assasination that he'd created a martyr there there might not have been one.

Another thing I liked about the structure of the book is that the author ended with a kind of "where are they now," or what happened to the actors in the "drama." That's where I learned of the Jones story, for example.

What I didn't like about the book was the speculation the author did on what was going on in Booth's mind while he was in the Garret barn where he was eventually shot. I'm conscious of that ever since a good friend and former boss and I talked about a book years ago in which he accused I think it was Halberstram of doing that. "How could he know was was going on in [so-and-so]'s mind?" he asked. Of course he can guess, but then such speculation needed to be stated as such.

I must confess too that I almost downgraded the review by one star too because of what I saw in the book's acknowledgements. You see, Swanson thanked is friends "at the Heritage Foundation." What's the matter with that? Well, Heritage is extremely ideological. (I know, for, among other reasons, I have a distant cousin who works there.) How would one have felt after reading such a book if the author had said, "Many thanks to all my buddies at the Communist Party." It might make you want to find another more credible book because that party tends to be ideological. Heritage may be the other side of the political spectrum but is no less ideological, so it made me wonder about the author's motives and objectivity. But, despite Heritage, I found the book worth reading and, yes, difficult to put down. So, over and above the Booth speculation, I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing....Engaging...........2007-08-12

A thrilling page-turner! Even though the ending is known to all you'll find this book keeps you more than a little interested and at the edge of your seat. I found myself having to put the book down to grieve for Lincoln's death, but at the same time unable to put the book down because it's was so captivating, all the while savoring each page!

Is your garden troubled by cutworms or aphids? Need to know the best method for preventing the spread of viruses among your houseplants? Look no further than Pests and Diseases, the informative guide to the downside of gardening. Sooner or later, everyone's roses are troubled by black spot. Or maybe you haven't been having success treating known problems with chemical solutions. Pests and Diseases will answer all your questions, from prevention methods to lasting damage repair.

The close-up photos in the "identifying" area are certainly helpful, but are not for the squeamish. And it's not just the creepy crawlies that are a little discomforting--shots of full-blown bacterial infections on tree trunks aren't exactly a welcome sight, either. But to ensure healthy lives for their plants, responsible gardeners need to be as familiar with ladybug larvae as they are with lavender. It's better to recognize these problems in the early stages. Treatments discussed focus on organic and biological methods whenever possible. Beer-traps, barriers, and beneficial bugs are all explained in detail, along with reminders that regular weeding and cleanliness aren't just for looks, but for health as well. When chemical solutions are recommended, proper care is emphasized--not just for you, but for the other plants and animals in your garden. Proper techniques for preparation, treatment, storage, and disposal are gone over at length, as well as stern advice to only use these in moderation, and correctly--if they won't solve the problem thoroughly, then they're not worth the risks involved. Thorough and straightforwardly technical, even beginning gardeners will find it possible to tackle tough problems with this intelligent aid. --Jill Lightner

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference Text!.......2007-07-16

Thorough listing and descriptions of various pests and diseases with good suggestions of how to handle.

    3 out of 5 stars It's okay.......2007-07-12

This is a book for a more experienced gardener. You almost need to be able to look at a plant and know what the disease/infestation might be before finding it in this book. It would be more helpful to have a section with a listing of plants/trees and their susceptabilities. I actually had to look up the plant in another reference book to find out what disease/infestation a certain plant may be susceptible to, then I was able to look that up in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Poor coverage of diseases and pests.......2007-06-12

First off, it's extremely difficult to identify a pest or disease by description alone. By the cover, which showed picture after picture, I thought for sure each disease or insect infestation would have a picture to help with identification. There were only a handful of the many plant diseases and insect damage that one encounters. I ended up using Davesgarden.com for my diagnosis.

    1 out of 5 stars NOT QUITE.......2005-08-10

This book does not really give concrete and detailed pest and desease control methods. It does not give any information about chemicals and insecticides for specific problems. It is actually really useless.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference book.......2005-08-07

This book was purchased for a plant pathology and entomolgy class I am taking. This has been completely invaluable as a reference book for any sort of disease or insect identification.

    4 out of 5 stars Voracious Reader.......2007-06-09

This is the second book in the Chase series, I have read the third, and I am waiting for the last ebook with breath held. I really like the closeness of the family and the complete love and respect they have for the mother and each other. The characters are well developed and are believable. It is a good quick read, at least it was a quick read for me. I don't care for how the brothers date and then marry their brothers ex's, I don't agree with all that mixing. There has to be more women were they don't have to look to the old girlfriends. I think the cover models (men) could be a little stronger looking but I like the fact that they are trying to make the men more realistic. Cassandra comes to the small town in Georgia running from an abusive husband. Polly chase runs into the back of her car, thus starts her association with the Chase family. Her interaction with the Chase brother is a little tiresome at times but overall I loved it. The stories have romance, erotica, suspense, and danger. I recommend this series.

5 out of 5 stars Lauren Dane does it again.......2007-05-26

The second book with the Chase Brothers, better than the first. Love, sex and a good thriller. How could you ask for more? Lauren Dane is always a sure thing.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for a Great read and wonderful characters find it here.......2007-04-15

I loved Taking Chase by Lauren Dane. Actually I love all her Chase Brothers stories. She has written a total of three in this series. The latest is in E Book format at Samhain Publishing. Taking Chase is Ms. Dane's second book in the series set in Petal, Georgia. This for me was perhaps her most challenging in characters as in the first book Shane, our hero in book 2, was not especially likable, heck I actively disliked him because of the way he treated the heroine. However Ms. Dane not only made Shane likable she made me fall in love with this complex hero. Shane is the sheriff in Petal and it is a good thing because with a Mom like Polly Chase it pays to have the law on your side. Polly is one of my favorite on going characters in Petal. She not only keeps the Chase boys in line but also is a grand dame of Petal. She sports big hair, wears high heals and has a penchant for not driving well. I know you will come to adore her as much as I have in the Chase Books.

Shane is still recovering from a broken heart and is determined to never involve his heart again in a relationship however with a Mom like Polly he does not stand a chance keep his heart in tact. Now enters Cassie Gambol, she is not looking for love but just a place to stay when "BAM" Polly rear ends Cassie's car. Polly just happens to be applying makeup to her face at the time. This start the fast paced fun filled ride in Taking Chase. There is drama and suspense as Shane is trying learn more about the intriguing Cassie. Cassie is hiding a secert that Petal's sheriff is determined to find out. Will that effect their relationship? You will have to read "Taking Chase" to find out!

Ms. Dane is an auto buy for me, the strength, emotions and sheer love she brings in her stories make her books keepers. Cheers for "Taking Chase" and the series that makes me want to move to Petal, Georgia!

3 out of 5 stars Better story than cover. Should have 3 3/4 stars........2007-04-15

This is an enjoyable book, even though being rather simplistic. No surprises, moderately hot sex, with some characters more interesting than others. I found this book better than the first Chase book, Giving Chase, although that was also fun, albeit another quick read. Certainly nothing too heavy. My biggest gripe with Taking Chase (and also Giving Chase) is the insipid quality of the covers. None of the people shown on the covers look particularily interesting. I don't like to make negative comments about any one's appearence, but the Chase brother in Taking Chase is supposed to be big, ruggedly handsome, and around thirty years old. The cover model looks about 19, pouty, and not terribly erotic-looking. I'm sure in real life the guy is very nice and good looking, but not the cover-boy for this book. The same, unfortunately, can be said about the cover model for Giving Chase. You can't judge a book by its cover is true. Although, if one has to imagine the Chase brothers looking like the cover models (and the heroines are just as bad), then best ignore the covers and just enjoy the books. The best thing about these books is getting to know the Chase family. "Mom" is great. I think she is the most interesting of all the characters, although she, also, is very stereotypical. I have just looked at several of the Samhain book covers on line and none of them show people as erotic and sexual as the books seem to indicate they should be. I will, however be buying the next two Chase brothers books. As I said, I find the Chase family fun.

It's been more than a hundred years since the publication of the first Uncle Remus book, and it was in 1955 that all of the delightful and inimitable tales of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer Bear, and Brer Wolf were gathered together in one volume. All of the animal tales from eight books are here, along with the illustrations which originally accompanied them.

    4 out of 5 stars wonderful classic.......2007-06-08

I grew up listening to Brer Rabbit tales. Naturally, when I became a mother, I wanted to share these stories with my child as well. This book is excellent- with pages and pages of great African folktales. Some of the diction is a little difficult to read, but I think that adds to the authenticity. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars An American Classic.......2007-05-21

The Uncle Remus tales were a favorite of mine when my grandfather told them to me and as I read them to my grandchildren, I can see they will be a favorite of theirs, too. As the characters develop, the children can see bits and pieces of their family and friends emerge. An American Classic.

This is a beautiful keepsake type edition of this book. Anyone who grew up reading Uncle Remus or having it read to them,as I did, would enjoy owning this wondeful book. What great memories it brings back!! Highly recommend this book for Uncle Remus lovers.

5 out of 5 stars a National and Southern TREASURE !.......2006-05-01

I could not disagree more with B. Tracy Hanson. My beloved grandpa of dear memory read these stories to me as a child on many a lazy summer afternoon in Florida. I think they are most appropriate for children, and a must for Southern children, black and white, because it is part of their Southern heritage and dialect. The stories and language are fascinating and captivating. I would lay there enthralled and enchanted, as my grandpa would read to me, each afternoon, during the summers I spent with him and my grandma. These stories and him reading them to me are some of my most treasured childhood memories!

Tracy, pictures!!?? The whole time my grandpa read me these stories, I never even knew there were pictures/drawings in the book. He just read, and I used my IMAGINATION. (Though, now that I do look at the original 1880's drawings, they are wonderful.) Language adapted!!!??? The language is a major element in making this anthology a treasure! JCH has preserved a Southern dialect, that is an integral part of the stories. These stories should be read out loud by a Southerner (who can handle the dialect, though even a Northerner could probably do a good job of "faking it", with some practice.) (Even though I speak proper, standard English, I can easily slip into this dialect, having heard it as a child.)

Oh, David, how sickeningly "politically correct". Violence?? What violence?? These are children's tales ...... Uncle Remus was telling them to a CHILD! Violence, ugh! You make it sound like the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". These stories are suitable for any child, unless you are a "bleeding-heart, pansy liberal".

    Book Description

A marvelous hybrid of mythology and mystery, A Wild Sheep Chase is the extraordinary literary thriller that launched Haruki Murakami’s international reputation.

It begins simply enough: A twenty-something advertising executive receives a postcard from a friend, and casually appropriates the image for an insurance company’s advertisement. What he doesn’t realize is that included in the pastoral scene is a mutant sheep with a star on its back, and in using this photo he has unwittingly captured the attention of a man in black who offers a menacing ultimatum: find the sheep or face dire consequences. Thus begins a surreal and elaborate quest that takes our hero from the urban haunts of Tokyo to the remote and snowy mountains of northern Japan, where he confronts not only the mythological sheep, but the confines of tradition and the demons deep within himself. Quirky and utterly captivating, A Wild Sheep Chase is Murakami at his astounding best.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book. .......2007-07-31

I think Murakami is an excellent author. He has proven to contain more imagination in a single paragraph than other authors have in an entire novel.
If you haven't read any books by him, I recommend starting with this one.

PROS 1) Brilliant imagination. 2) genuinely intriguing and intelligent. 3) completely unique 4) mysterious in a very strange way 5) absurd humor 6) very strange

CONS 1) This book is a translation. I don't know about you, but I don't like translations. Yes, it's true, you lose something in translation. I find the prose in his book to be stale and uninteresting. This particular book isn't his worst translated novel, but it's still below my satisfactory level. You read Murakami for his imagination, not for his wirting style. 2) It's got a hard-boiled first-person narrative style. This could be a pro or it could be a con. For myself, I believe it is a con. In fact, if you absolutely despise the idea of a hard-boiled narrative you probably won't enjoy Murakami very much. 3) It's a bit too long. One downfall of Murakami, in my opinion, is that his novels are overwritten. I don't need every little mundane detail when I read a book. You decide whether that is a pro or a con yourself.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in magic-realism, bizarro fiction, subversive writing, and offbeat speculative fiction.

5 out of 5 stars One morning I awoke and the sheep was gone.......2007-07-23

This is not the first time I'm reading this book but the first time I'm reading it after reading Dance Dance Dance which its sequel is.
I enjoyed it much better this time, finish reading after intensive 4 hours.

A Lonely 29 old guy meet lonely weird girl with ultra power ears. They enjoy chain-smoking and casual sex. A photograph of the wild sheep has appeared accidentally in a newsletter the guy had published. He is asked by a business man with plan face to go out on a quest to find the sheep. This is a mystery story with a long chase. On the way we meet interesting characters. One is called the Sheep Professor, another Rat, a rather nice fellow despite his name.
The story is both realistic and fantastic. It is humorous and surreal, and at the same time reflects loneliness, and longing for love.

I'm reading Murakami's books on the wrong order... if you think of reading this, you might consider reading 'Pinball, 1973' and Hear the Wind Sing first. 'The Wild Sheep Chase' is the sequel to Pinball, and is the third book in Murakami's "Trilogy of the Rat". Both 'Pinball' and 'Hear the Wind Sing' are out of print in the US and are available online for free.

5 out of 5 stars wild sheep chase for the identity of postmodern Japan.......2007-07-07

The first book I read by Murakami,(South of the Border, West of the Sun) I hated. The second, (Kafka on the Shore) I had mixed feelings about. The third, I loved -- this was the third. A Wild Sheep chase is in my opinion a great place to start if one has never read Murakami before. It is easily accessible, intriguing, and interesting, while still being thought-provoking. The fact is, you can read this book on vacation for fun and you can also spend half a year exploring all of the allegorical possibilities.

The general academic consensus is that this book explores the search for the identity of Japan in a postmodern world. There are several different interpretations, however -- see Dances With Sheep: The Quest for Identity in the Fiction of Murakami Haruki (Stretcher)

It's important to note that this book is the third book of Murakami's Trilogy of the Rat (although the first two are out of print because Murakami considers the fledgling novels weak) and there is also something of a sequel (Dance, Dance, Dance -- also recommended but very different).

3 out of 5 stars Classic Murakami, But Way Too Long.......2007-05-04

I'm going to make this brief in honor of how much shorter the book should have been. I love Murakami and did enjoy this book, but frankly, the whole thing seemed like a short story that ballooned into a novel. I can't help but think Murakami was sitting around one day, came up with a great idea, then decided to write about it only to find that he had written a novel-length piece that he had originally intended to be 40 or 50 pages. The story centers on a guy who gets a postcard from a friend of some sheep that he puts in an ad. Unfortunately, this starts a series of bizarre events that lead to a stunning conclusion (I would say more, but you really have to read it to get a sense of how hard it is to capture the small details Murakami includes in this story). I think what may have eventually turned me off to this book is the ending and Murakami's desire to explain everything to us, something that is not present in his later books. But everything he writes is enjoyable, so this is a chance to see a writer growing and improving his craft over time.

3 out of 5 stars Another madcap inquiry into the mystery of existence...and sheep........2007-04-14

Murakami is an acquired taste, but fortunately he's very easily acquired. His novels are typically a mixed bag of comic absurdity, pathos, suspense, and philosophical speculation but written in a straight-ahead, colloquial style. *A Wild Sheep Chase* is no exception. Here a struggling adman ends up recruited by a mysterious client in black to find a sheep that has appeared in an insurance company advertisement our hero's firm has designed. The sheep in this ad is special...it takes over people's consciousness.

That's the least of what you need to know to understand what kind of novel *A Wild Sheep Chase* is. And yet for all its imaginative "wildness," the novel has a traditional, hardboiled-style first-person narrative that easily draws you into the story. In fact, I'd say that three-quarters of the pleasure of this novel comes from spending time with the likeable, hard-luck narrator. Witty but not a wisecracker, laid-back but no Joe Cool, fatalistic but not cynical, he's a guy who is thoroughly convinced of his mediocrity and okay with it. He's got the kind of applied equanimity to life's vicissitudes that you wish you had, taking things as they come, taking things as they go. He knows life is heading for loss and sadness, but he's not whining about it. If he's not the kind of guy you could ever be, than he's the kind of guy you wish you had for a friend--and that makes spending 350+ pages in his company a pleasurable experience. And that's a good thing because if I had one criticism about *A Wild Sheep Chase* it's that it's about 70 pages too long. In the last third of the novel, there's a lot of description of the narrator sitting around waiting for the climax to occur when it could have occurred pages and pages beforehand. Well, as I said, he's pleasant enough company so it wasn't intolerable. Still...I got a little tired of hearing what he cooked for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, how long he slept, what things he saw upon looking out the window.

And, as for the climax...well, don't expect the usual resolution in a Murakami novel. The original mystery--or what seemed to be the original mystery at the start--has a way of shifting around to become something else entirely. It's the kind of mystery where the search becomes even more important than the answer and the answer is often left open to a good deal of reader interpretation. In this instance, however, things seem even more obscure than usual and I found the resolution of the novel unnecessarily muddied. In a novel that depends a lot on chance, coincidence, and the arbitrary, the pay-off struck me as a little too much dependent on all of these. Perhaps something was lost in the translation from the Japanese, but I found the ending of *A Wild Sheep Chase* rather unsatisfying.

These caveats aside, Murakami is more than just a mystery writer. With his reality-bending plots, ambiguity, and philosophical questioning, he is a genuinely thought-provoking literary artist and a *A Wild Sheep Chase* is an ultimately intriguing, rewarding, and, perhaps most of all, fun read.
