Customer Reviews:
just as good as the first one.......2007-08-13
this one was great. the kids are getting restless and more and more violent.... the adults are all dead except fop one. and he is a JERK.. keep on reading this series.
ADULTS TURN TO THE DARK SIDE.......2007-07-03
The 862 souls of Yamato Elementary are still trying to figure out what happened as it seems their school has been transported to the middle of a desolate desert in the middle of nowhere. But they don't even know if the school has moved. Maybe the city around it has been destroyed. When a little boy that Sho encountered on the way to school shows up with a sign from the front of the school that appears to have aged decades, answers begin to surface as to what exactly has happened. Since they're in the middle of a desert with no means of communicating to the outside world (if there is one), the school has to start worrying about food. There is some in the cafeteria, but one of the school workers, Sekiya, has decided he's going to hoard it all for himself, even if he has to kill men, women, and children to do it!
Drifting Classroom has a creepy Twilight Zone premise which immediately hooked me in the first volume. In volume 2, the writing, or more accurately, the characterization, reaches a stumbling block. Some of the characters, especially the adults, reach their breaking point too soon. It just seems like Umezu begins to kill off the teachers just to get them out of the way so he can focus on the kids. Being a teacher, I can say that if a similar situation happened at my school, I doubt the teachers would be as weak-willled and despairing as the ones in Drifting Classroom. They would recognize that the kids would need an example of strength and not to give up. At least that's what I'd like to think. Umezu does not give enough background on any of them to explain their suicidal or even homicidal behaviors. This manga does keep you reading, even it has some major flaws, and I am curious to see the truth of what happened to Yamato and if they're ever gonna get back home.
Why So Long For Such A Great Title?.......2007-02-01
Manga-ka Kazou Umezu has been making Japanese comics for decades. One of his most famous properties is The Drifting Classroom, first published in Japan in 1976. In 2006, VIZ Media (American huckster of all manner of Japanese medium) began the publication of a newly adapted English translation of this title. The question remains: why did it take thirty years?
In brief, the story surrounds the horrific set of circumstances behind which an entire Japanese school building vanishes, leaving no sign but a crater in its passing. The reader (dare I say, audience?) watches through the eyes of two main characters - sixth-grader Sho Takamatsu, and his widowed mother - from either side of the disaster. As Sho and his classmates wonder what has happened to them, the school building being the only remaining structure to be seen in a desolate, sand-filled world reminiscent of Frank Herbert's Dune, Sho's mother grieves the loss of her only son in what appeared to be a tragic explosion which took the lives of all 862 occupants of Yamato Elementary.
This second volume of The Drifting Classroom, Vol. 2 unleashes a rapid-fire assault on the imagination. While the first book developed the characters of Sho, his mother, and a select few classmates - as well as introduced the major plot device - this volume begins what promises to be a fatalistic barrage on the senses of the characters, and thus the readers, in close succession. Whereas Volume 1 begets the promise of unimaginably horrible things to come, Volume 2 begins to deliver. As the gravity of their plight begins to set in, the adults of the book (the stranded teachers and school staff) begin to lose their touch with renowned-Japanese civility, sanity, and - for some - life itself. And as reality shifts, the terrified students begin to lose their lives, as well.
And this all occurs within mere hours of the fateful event! Fantagraphics' Comics Journal describes the series as "Lord of the Flies on amphetamines." Volume 2 brings truth and validation to this observation.
Mr. Umezu's artwork in this volume is solid, though somewhat dated (not that this is such a bad thing), and looks a little awkward during certain scenes of frantic movement (for example, when a student is running, the pose looks decidedly superimposed over a Manga-esque backdrop, rather than to create a flawless illusion of fluid motion). This phenomenon in The Drifting Classroom, Vol. 2 is, however, less obvious than it was in its predecessorand does nothing to detract from the horror of the book's tale.
So, why did it take thirty years for such a unique, cutting, powerful Manga to be released in North America? It is impossible to answer definitively, but there might be something to the suggestion that the subject matter was simply too disturbing in the past, somehow too real, even in its speculative fictional realm, for the North American audience. That is to say, the gentle reader knows and accepts that a building cannot simply vanish for no reason... however, if one could accept such a stretch in the reader's known reality, then The Drifting Classroom could easily become quite a traumatic study of human nature. And, backed by the devastating events of 9/11...
...Maybe the underlying concept wasn't so far-fetched, after all?
Improvements over the last volume.......2007-01-26
When I reviewed the first volume, I believe I noted that the pacing seemed somewhat 'off' at times and had a tendency to lag---no more! This second offering of this psychological gore rollercoaster picks up from the exact frame we were left with at the end of Vol. 1.
The children, now distraught and fearful for their lives, have come together (a bit too quickly I might add) and shielded themselves from the madness and death that captures most of the teachers.
A crazed lunch worker hunts Sho and the rest of the school while protecting the entire school's food supply; greedy and mad, he kills several students and injures more. When the children realize they can venture out into 'the sandbox', things get even stranger and this quickly becomes an action comic.
Fast reading, and not for the faint of heart. I recommend this to anyone of age. Kazz works his magic again, and while I don't think THE DRIFTING CLASSROOM is a particularly strong title yet, I can see where it might be heading--right into my favorites list for a long, long time. Mildly recommended.

Take a much deserved humor break.......2006-11-15
What a wonderful and funny collection of cartoons that puts the humor spotlight on a serious subject. I already put some of these cartoons on the bulletin board at school. If you're an educator, get this book. If you're not an educator, buy it for someone who is. You will be thanked.

Better and Better.......2007-03-12
In this third installation of Mr. Umezu's horrific The Drifting Classroom, the students discover that their situation is even more dire than they had first realized. Scarcely having had time to adapt to the subsequent insanity and deaths of their teachers, each of the children begin to see their new-found reality become even bleaker. Now, not only are students vying against each other for superiority in this hostile new environment, but other - more menacing - threats are uncovered.
In volume 3, terror makes itself at home in the mind of the reader. Shinjuku Elementary School is revealed not to have exploded or sunk beneath the Earth's surface, but to have been transported across time to an apocalyptic future. However, in doing so, Mr. Umezu does not model his Manga from some grotesque low-budget horror film - no, this new development serves to explain the situation of the students so that the bizarre set of circumstances is made to be almost believable. And that's no mean feat, given the incredible nature of such subject matter.
Indeed, this is a story best suited to the format in which is has been unveiled. It could not be adequately captured in any other medium.
Stretching the limits of disbelief, yet never quite trampling them, The Drifting Classroom, vol. 3 not only sustains the terror, but develops it into something even stronger than before.
A Child's Nightmare.......2006-12-23
Sho and his schoolmates continue their terrifying oddisey in an alien world, finding that humans are as great a danger as the mysterious new world. And his only hope is his mom! But even her cannot help him all the time. It is Lord of the Flies with even less hope and greater madness. How long can over eight hundred little kids survive under those conditions? Not very long. Casualties continue to mount as the children struggle for survival...and for power.

a cool and creepy book.......2007-08-13
this book is about a school that somehow gets sent into the future. and boy is it a bleak future. the kids have to learn to survive on thier own in this alternate universe. its quite violent as the kids commit murder and other acts of violence.
A compelling start.......2007-01-15
Kazuo Umezu is the godfather of horror manga; Junji Ito, Suehiro Maruo and even the great Osamu Tezuka have admitted to being influenced by him at some time. He's legendary in his neighborhood, and thought of as a good luck charm (as told in this books "epilogue"-type ending), and...he's nearly always smiling! After this reading, I'm wondering what it is that he is so in love with.
This is a simple story (so far) that is driven through a tense psychology and plenty of violence (which grows to more, or so I hear). If you're reading this, you're probably already interested and know the story, so I'll skip that. I would like to say that this manga, overall, is a great start, albeit with a few flaws, some of which are hard to overlook.
VIZ publishes well, no doubt. A right-to-left format, as the Japanese are accustomed to, and no noticible censoring (as we're told with the "warning" sticker telling us tha this is intended for mature readers (and it is!)). However, there are a few drawbacks, the most notable being the decision to translate the original sound effects (which are always in katakana) into english (such as NB becoming GYAAA!). Personally, I find it distracting and unauthentic. With most manga these days being presented in the most "Japanese" way possible, its a bit odd to see why VIZ choose to do this, yet try to keep things authentic with the right-to-left format.
Another small complaint is the shading. This publication is over thirty years old, and it shows. VIZ has done a pretty good job of restoring what they can, but the smaller panels here look very, very grainy, which mildly upsets me, because Kazz is a wonderful artist!
After not knowing much about this series, I've come to the conclusion that it's sucked me in enough to want the next volume (which I'll be rushing out to get soon!) and to continue with every release from this wonderful manga-ka. The minor set backs, the ones mentioned above as well as the fact that this is relatively cheap paper (though its cost is low, so my complaint is rounded yet again), are definitely overshadoed by a strong, psychological story and verbose and sometimes gory imagery. This is a fine start to a series and recommended to all horror fans!
A BIT TOO DELIBERATE PACE.......2006-10-07
"The Drifting Classroom" from VIZ Communications is the first in a new Manga series from horror master Kazuo Umezu. It's cover states that it has explicit content but that's a bit of an overstatement. This book is PG13 at the very worst. The book centers on a 6th grade student named Sho who is a bit of a brat to say the least. He's always fighting with his mother who wants him to grow up and be more responsible. The pair have a huge fight before school as Sho dashes off to avoid being late, and later regretting the harsh words he had for his mother...and they may end up being the last words he ever says to her. Soon a catastrophic event strikes the school...and earthquake or maybe an explosion. Whatever it was, it left a great, big hole where the elementary school used to be and no trace of the school or children.
Hearing the explosion, Sho's mother runs to the school and is shocked along with the rest of the parents at the large crater where the school had once been. But they are not nearly as shocked as the students and teachers who find the school still intact, but surrounded on all sides by...nothing. Just endless miles of sand and rock, desolation all around. Panic overtakes the students as the teachers and principal try to keep order. The phones, television, and radio are all out as the teachers lie to the kids in order to keep them calm.
Umezu's story reads like an episode of the Twilight Zone but unfortunately bogs down in the second half of the book. The school disappears relatively early on in the story and the last ¾ of the book is all about the kids being in a panic as some try to leave the school, only to end up unconscious (or worse) in the desolate wastes. So basically you end up with about a 100 pages of crying, whining kids and few questions answered. What happened to the school? How did it disappear? Where is it now? I guess we'll have to wait to future issues to find out. On the plus side, Umezu's art is always solid and enjoyable. We'll see where we go from here...

- authentic examples of student work from a variety of grade levels and settings that reveal just how much students can do when given the opportunity to both learn from comics and create their own

Customer Reviews:
I Love This Book!.......2005-02-21
Stephen Cary has written a wonderful book for teachers of English Learners as well as for native English Speakers in the process of expanding their language.
Cary's years of teaching and learning language acquisition theory and practice as well as his love of children and wonderful sense of humor have helped to create a terrific teaching aid. New and experienced teachers will find a great deal to inspire and encourage them. The book is full of real teaching experience. I have seen him teach and the students are instantly responsive and engaged, while being immersed in using rich language. He is an inspiring teacher and his experiences and humor have created an inspiring and easily accessible book. It is practical and easy to use. You too, will love this book!
DON'T THINK TWICE! WHAT AN EXCELLENT TOOL FOR MOTIVATION!! .......2005-02-17
Herein lies a teacher's dream! A must read for anyone interested in increasing motivation in his/her students! Teachers love to get simple ideas to apply to class TOMORROW! This book sports teacher-friendly pertinent theory and tons of hands-on examples of how to use a very untapped resource and tool for motivation that demystifies reading and writing for students.
Stephen Cary's extensive background and interest in comics, his theoretical background in language education, and his experience with students and teachers who have used comics will assist teachers in accessing a "new" resource to utilize with all students, and especially linguistically diverse students. Whether it is to teach first or second (or third, etc.) language, young children or adults, the author's irresistible down-to-earth writing style and humor will make teachers laugh, address their realistic concerns about using a new resource, and provide them with relevant pictures, quotes, and anecdotes from fellow teachers and students who have used comics in the classroom! It will also give them an extensive list of resources to put this fabulous tool into practice. I give it a two thumbs up!
Book Description
As most instructors, presenters and trainers have discovered, cartoons are an excellent classroom resource for making key learning points in an enjoyable, engaging manner.
Cartoons function well as metaphors for the subject at hand, help introduce or wrap-up key concepts, and serve to ease transitions between learning segments. However, as most users have also discovered, reproduction fees for cartoons in training can be expensive; permissions hard to obtain; and copyright holders difficult to track down.
This book provides the solution. Cartoons for Trainers presents over seventy five original cartoons, conceptualized by trainers for trainers. It includes a license that allows buyers to display these cartoons in the classroom.
The cartoons focus on the transition points in any training program. Subjects include objectives, introductions, activities, case studies, role-plays, experiential learning, breaks, evaluations, and closings. For anyone who wants tips or guidance, the author provides a brief and practical introduction.
In addition, the cartoons are reproduced on the included CD-ROM for use in electronic presentations. Purchase of the book constitutes permission for the buyer to reproduce the cartoons for overheads or place them in electronic presentations.
Written by leading offbeat training expert Lenn Millbower, author of Training With A Beat: The Teaching Power of Music, and the composer of Do You Want to Learn With Music: Game Show Themes for Trainers, and drawn by New York show director Doris Yager, these cartoons exhibit a tongue-in-cheek wit reminiscent of Gary Larson's "The Far Side" and Scott Adams' Dilbert. All the cartoons make good-natured fun of the everyday foibles trainers experience, while addressing the fears that learners have toward training.
This is an ideal trainer's companion and deserves a place in any trainer's toolbox.
Customer Reviews:
Cartoons for Trainers.......2003-07-15
I was disappointed in the quality of this book. The cartoons are amateurish and not all that amusing. The topics in which the cartoons are divided fall into only two categories: "Classroom Life" and "Training Topics". The concept of being able to download cartoons into your own presentation is great, but the applicability of what is contained in this book is very narrow. I doubt I will find much use for this book.
