Disappointment.......2007-07-15
I've always been a Tintin fan, and wanted to buy a book for my son. However the format of this book was disappointing, as the original (single) story books were more like A4. The book (with three stories in one) is just too small. It's not the fact that there are three stories all in one volume, it's simply the size of the book. Why was it changed? If you're thinking of buying one of these ... check the measurements! The're not the same size as the originals.
great stories.......2007-03-10
As usual, my 7 years old loved to read Tintin, and I loved to rediscover the stories too ! It is a great book to transport you and your little ones into new adventures. Calculus and Captain Haddock are hilarious. Tintin is adventurous, smart and a good example to my kid.
1956-1960.......2007-02-07
Comic #6 of "The Adventures of Tintin" 3-in-1s has "The Calculus Affair" (1956), "The Red Sea Sharks" (1958) and "Tintin and Tibet" (1960). There's some fine stuff here, but it's not my favorite time in the series. Tough times for Herge too.
"The Calculus Affair" features a new invention and a kidnapping, set in Switzerland and "Borduria". From me, 3 stars.
"Red Sea Sharks" is set in the Middle East, and features Abdullah. From me, 4 stars.
"Tintin in Tibet" is pretty famous in the series, and sees Tintin go out to find his old friend Chang, stranded in the Himalayas. From me, 5 stars.
Kind of like his later stuff a bit better. Worth a look for fans though.
Glad to See Tintin again.......2007-01-19
I grew up reading The Adventures of Tintin and recently purchased this volume for a young cousin in an effort to turn him on to these great stories. I like the new hard cover 3 story format as my old paperback copies have begun to come apart, from repeated reading of course. One thing that I noticed is that unlike the original versions which each had exactly 62 pages, the new format has not preserved this... now I know that's a little nerotic but that's something I always remembered from reading them as a young boy, the fact that each was exactly 62 pages. Herge is a very talented artist and story teller, I would recommend the complete collection to anyone who is looking for a quality adventure story!
Great stories, well executed.......2007-01-14
I grew up with Tintin books, and my kids are now at an age where they are beyond "See Spot Run" but don't always have the patience for a full-length book. The stories are always great, and the research is meticulous. Most of the story subjects were highly topical at the time, and reading the books regularly provide history refresher.
"The Calculus Affair" is a typical cold-war cloak-and-dagger story of espionage and intrigue. How the world has changed, but the Litvinenko Affair is a reminder that the Cold War was a reality not so long ago.
"The Red Sea Sharks" deals with gun-running and slavery in the Middle East, a subject that is still topical (as the UN's efforts attest).
"Tintin in Tibet" is one of my favourites, a great Tintin story used by Herge to draw attention to Red China's invasion and annexation of Tibet, and the cultural heritage the Communists set about to destroy.
Amazon.com
Along with Mickey Mouse and Asterix, Tintin is one of the world's most recognizable cartoon characters. If you haven't read any of his adventures, you are missing a real pleasure. The clean, crisp art style that defines modern European comics is almost entirely the influence of Hergé. Considered to be one of Hergé's masterworks, Tintin in Tibet is a great book for both old and new fans of Tintin. It is compelling, exciting, and spiritually rewarding in the way that the best comics stories can be.
Customer Reviews:
Ahead of its time.......2007-05-16
This is essentially Herge's spiritual soul searching 'hippie' book. If it had been done in the late 60s it would probably have been seen as being quite in tune with the popular culture of its time. Yet this was actually done ten years earlier in 1958, which makes it an almost visionary work. It was even orignally supposed to have had an all white cover, much like the beatles white album. All in all, one of the most enjoyable Tintin books, and also a timeless classic of 20th century popular culture.
Possibly the best of the Tintin adventures........2007-04-13
Herge, Tintin in Tibet (Methuen, 1960)
Tintin in Tibet is a complete anomaly in the Tintin series, a diversion from Tintin's usual world of intrigue to follow a dream. Tintin finds out his old friend Chang (from The Blue Lotus) has been involved in a plane crash in Tibet, he and Haddock rush off to the crash site. Tintin is convinced Chang is still alive; everyone around him, including Haddock, tell him it's not possible. Tintin's quest to find out the truth of Chang's fate leads him into a monastery full of mystics and, ultimately, a search for the legendary yeti.
This is an amazing piece of work. It is, perhaps, the most universally lauded Tintin comic (Lofficier, in The Pocket Essential Tintin, says it's been voted the greatest French-language graphic novel of all time), and it is without doubt one of the best. ****
Great Tintin book.......2007-02-02
This was reportedly author Herge's own favorite book in the Tintin series. It's slower, less oriented toward children, and fascinated (to the point of naivete, perhaps) with Eastern mysticism. The plot: Tintin, vacationing in the Alps with Haddock and Calculus, suddenly has a dream in which his friend Tchang (from The Blue Lotus, an early Tintin album) is in serious danger. As they soon learn, Tchang was on a plane that crashed on the Himalayas, apparently without survivors. But Tintin is convinced Tchang is alive, so there they go to try to rescue him. In Tibet they met a number of people, including none other than the Yeti (who is a central character in the book) and flying lamas(!). A very good album, though I wouldn't rate it among the very best. Also of interest is that it shows an independent Tibet, the book being written just before China's invasion of that land.
Tintin in Tibet.......2006-12-25
Tintin has a dream of his Chinese friend Chang (from "The Blue Lotus") after hiking on a mountain holiday, and wakes to find that a plane Chang was on has crashed in the Himalayas. There were no survivors reported, but Tintin is convinced that Chang is still alive up there, so off he goes to the Nepalese/Tibetan border, along with Captain Haddock and some shirpas, looking for clues. There's a few surprises to be found up there, and Tintin hopes with all his heart that a healthy, happy Chang is one of them.
It's the last Tintin adventure, I reckon, that has Tintin as the main character. The last three completed ones ("The Castafiore Emerald", "Flight 714" and "Tintin and the Picaros") focus more on Captain Haddock. It's also probably the most emotional Tintin's character gets as well. The mountain scenery and Nepalese towns are drawn really nicely, and the adventure is simple and enjoyable. Worth a look for fans of Tintin.
A very personal story.......2005-09-27
This adventure of the beloved reporter Tintin and his dog Snowy is one of the most personal story that creator Hergé has ever told.
Tintin dreams of his friend Tchang -- only to learn that his dream has become reality: his friend is supposed to have died in a plane crash in Tibet. He leaves immediatly to start a search...
When Hergé started to work on this adventure, he found himself in a personal crisis. A psychiatrist even recommended him to stop working on "Les aventures de Tintin"...
With "Tintin in Tibet", he broke free from his established way of drawing. As the story evolves, we often see snow covered flats or snow storms with little detail -- in contrast to what Hergés style is usually composed of. The cast is also greatly reduced in number. Only a few of the established characters take center stage and not too many new ones are intoduced.
This is an excellent comic book -- maybe one of the greatest ever created. It is fun to read and the drawings are just gorgeous.

Perfect for crazed cruel French teachers.......2005-07-19
I cannot think of a worse French assignment than reading this book. I honestly can't! Which is sort of sad all by itself...
Anyway, let's review this book:
TinTin, the nosy reporter with no life and a funny hairdo (I wonder what kind of gell he uses?), has a magical dream!! (Has someone been drinking tea lately? *Everybody who's seen the Rutles laughs appreciatively*) Anyway, he decides this dream MUST BE TRUE!!! So, after screaming TCHANG!!! at the top of his lungs a few times for dramatic effect (and, just for added effect, having practically everyone else yell TCHANG! too-who really says TCHANG! when they sneeze?), TinTin decides that Tchang DIDN'T die in the plane crash where everyone else died-because TinTin the Great had a dream, Tchang is OBVIOUSLY still alive!!! I have to agree with the nutty Professor here: TinTin shouldn't have champagne that early in the morning! Of course, it's probably tea, not champagne, but ANYWAY.....speaking of the Professor, he's hardly in this! (Not that I really mind, but he's better than the rest of them...sort of) His biggest part is appearing in the Captain's hallucination. (Don't ask)
Speaking of the other characters, not only is TinTin his annoying self, he's also slightly insane (following a dream and a floating monk and refusing to stop even though he's probably going to die?). The Captain is actually SENSIBLE *gasp* in this one. And the dog is an alchoholic who, from his actions, doesn't care if TinTin lives or dies. And Tchang is...well...apparently he's perfect!! And in case that interesting crew isn't odd enough, let's throw in the legendary and terrifying yeti!!
All in all, not the greatest book in the world. What am I saying? DON'T READ THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU HAVE TO!!! Would you believe, it's actually better in French than English??? And I'm English natively, so that's pretty impressive!!
*NOTE: I didn't make a mistake about Tchang's name, in the French edition, it's spelt that way.*
Tintin heads to Tibet to rescue his friend Chang.......2003-05-17
Tintin and Milou were created in 1929 by Georges Remi (a.k.a. Hergé). In 1934 Hergé met a young Chinese student, Chang Chong-Chen, at which point Tintin's creator became convinced of the importance of having a soundly built storyline and getting the facts straight. In short, Hergé started taking his craft very seriously. After the Communists took over China, Hergé and Chang lost touch. In 1960 "Tintin Au Tibet" ("Tintin in Tibet") was published and it was immediately clear that this was a very personal story for Hergé, who was writing about his friendship with a friend he had not seen in decades.
Tintin has a dream about Chang, the boy he made friends with in China in "Le Lotus Bleu " ("The Blue Lotus"). Chang is lying in the snow, half buried, holding out his hands and calling to Tintin to help him. When Tintin gets a letter from Change he is surprised at the remarkable coincidence, but then he reads in the newspaper that Chang's plane has crashed in Tibet. Tintin, convinced his friend is not dead, goes off to save his friend.
There are none of the traditional villains in this rather special Tintin story in which our hero is aided only by Milu and Captain Haddock (with a brief appearance by Professor Tournesol). "Tintin Au Tibet" is a fairly straightforward rescue adventure, with the determined Tintin overcoming any and all obstacles placed in his way by man and nature. This is arguably the most poignant Tintin adventure, focusing on the power of loyalty and hope overcoming all obstacles and Hergé places a lot of obstacles in Tintin's way. I think what I like most about this story is about how Hergé keeps what are essentially a series of cliffhangers going and going but in a realistic manner, while still working in the series trademark humor with Milou and the Captain. "Tintin Au Tibet" is an atypical Tintin adventure, but that just makes it all the more special.
How did the real story end? In 1981 Hergé and Chang Chong-Chen were happily reunited.
OF COURSE !.......2000-04-13
Tintin au Tibet is one of Hergé's best books. Full of suspense, emotion, beautiful drawings and the abominable Yeti. Do read it, and, please, try to read it in French : Hergé's language is both precise and easy to understand. Enjoy !

Certainly Hergé would approve of these companion volumes.......2003-06-07
Tintin, of course, is the intrepid reporter created by Georges Remi (1907-1983), better known as Hergé, who appeared in a series of adventures set around the world. The character first appeared in a serial newspaper strip with an adventure in the Soviet Union, then going to the Belgian Congo, America, and over a dozen other places (including a memorable two-part trip to the Moon). Tintin is usually accompanied by his dog, a white fox terrier named Snowy, an old seaman, Captain Haddock, an eccentric professor, Cuthbert Calculus, the look-alike bumbling detectives Thomson and Thompson, and a cast of other colorful characters. "The Adventures of Tintin" appeared in newspaper and books all over the world and reflected Hergé's own interest in and knowledge of places around the world.
Consequently, "Tintin's Travel Diaries" are inspired by Hergé's characters and based on notebooks Tintin may have kept as he traveled on his adventures. Each book in the series take young readers (or even us older ones) to a different country visited by Tintin, exploring its geography, and the customs, the culture, and the heritage of the people living there. The books combine Hergé's original artwork from the appropriate Tintin adventure, which is usually juxtaposed with photographs showing the country as it is today, thereby combining education with a bit of fun. Other volumes in the series look at Africa, the Amazon, China, Egypt, India, Peru, Russia, Scotland, and the United States.
"Tintin's Travel Diaries: Tibet" is organized around thirty key questions designed for young readers, from "Why is Tibet called the 'Roof of the World'" to "Where is the Dalai Lama?" Each question is dealt with in a two-page spread, the left side containing artwork from Hergé's "Tintin in Tibet" and the right with corresponding photographs showing his fidelity to the actual geography, costumes, and traditions of the land. The text, by Daniel De Bruycker and Marine Noblet (translated by Maureen Walker).
Of course, it is hoped that anyone who picks up this volume has already enjoyed "Tintin in Tibet," in which our hero has a dream that his friend Chang is calling to him for help. When it turns out Chang was on an airplane that crashed in Tibet, Tintin takes Snowy and Captain Haddock with him to rescue his friend. With the original Tintin adventure serving as an introduction to the land of Tibet, this travel diary will answer the many questions young readers will have about the far off land. The back of the volume includes a glossary of key terms, both a chronology and a map of the region, along with an index and bibliography "for readers from 7 to 77."
Beautifully Illustrated.......2000-08-10
This is the very first Tintin book I have been exposed to. I read it for a University course in Children's Literature, and found the story to be fascinating and entertaining. The illustrations are detailed and marvelous -- grasping the attention of young and older readers alike. I am anticipating my next order of Tintin books!

Given that Fanny Rodwell, the widow of Tintin's Belgian creator Herg, is reported to be a personal friend of the Dalai Lama it is not surprising that she decided not to attend the promotional ceremonies in China for the launching of the Chinese language version of Tintin (the Chinese are not publishing "Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" (anti-communist) and "Tintin in the Congo" (too racist and imperialist).
