4 out of 5 stars Well known telling of major "tales of gods and heroes".......2007-08-19

This is a long standing work on mythology. The emphasis is on Greek and Roman tales, with a too brief discussion of Norse mythology. That some of the other reviewers mention it in the same breath as Bulfinch is testimony to the volume's value.

The work features a nice introductory essay to "set up" the discussion of Greek and Roman myths. There is also a rather unsatisfying brief introduction to the underdeveloped section on Norse mythology.

The first part features "The Gods, the Creation, and the Earliest Heroes." Here, Hamilton examines the array of gods, the stories of creation, and early heroes (such as Prometheus, Europa, and Polyphemus [hero??]). Part Two explores "Stories of Love and Adventure." In this segment, Hamilton considers Cupid and Psyche, and a series of tales of love (e.g., Pyramus and Thisbe, Orpheus and Eurydice, and so on). Also, the story of the Golden Fleece is retold.

Part Three summarizes "The Great Heroes before the Trojan War," including renderings of Perseus, Theseus, and the great Hercules. Part Four, as one might have anticipated, looks at "The Heroes of the Trojan War." Hamilton spends time on a number of figures and stories, such as Paris, the fall of Troy, Odysseus' post-Troy adventures, and the travails of Aeneas.

Part Five considers "Great Families of Mythology," such as the Houses of Atreus (think Agamemnon and Iphigenia), Thebes (Cadmus, Oedipus, Antigone), and Athens. Hamilton then moves to Part Six, where she summarizes the stories of "The Less Important Myths," including Midas, Glaucus and Scylla, inter alia.

Part Seven, as already noted, is a too brief coverage of "The Mythology of the Norsemen."

And, finally, a wonderfully helpful genealogy at the end (e.g., Ancestors of Perseus and Hercules, the House of Troy, and so on).

This is well written and shows considerable erudition. There are some problems in coverage as noted, but, in the end, this is still a welcome volume.

5 out of 5 stars If you like greek mythology then buy this book.......2007-08-16

I read this book of my own free will. this book is quite amazing, the detail and research she puts in is astounding. i am the kind of person to always take notes on the books i read and the extensive index she has is incredibly useful.
some people that have read this say its dry and boring, i read a lot of books and from my experience there are a lot dryer authors, and to really be a book of information, you can't expect it to be the most attention grabbing book of all time.
any way, if greek mythology is an interest of yours you will love this book.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction.......2007-06-26

I first read this book in sixth grade, and instantly fell in love with it. I loved the concept of mythology and loved how the book was written. I didn't find the boring aspects everyone else seemed to find. I devoured the book whole, and now, years later, I bought it. I was curious to see if the magic would hit me twice.

It did, in a sense. I vaguely remembered the stories, so the aspect of surprise and shock in some of the stories was ruined for me. Granted, when I first read it I was very young, but there were still some things that were more enjoyable to read the first time. Since then, I've moved onto other classic mythology books, and have found them to be very enjoyable too.

It is true, yes, that Edith Hamilton writes well, but overall the book is dry. It is true that this is a mere introduction and does not present us with every tale in the history of various mythologies (the Norse mythology section is pitifully short - I'd turn elsewhere for that). Overall, though, it's an enjoyable introduction, an easy read (if you can deal with the dryness), and an overall good book. It's convenient on the shelf and can serve you for many years to come.

A pretty good buy, but more serious readers should head towards more serious books, even if they'll be more difficult to read.

4 out of 5 stars not bad for required reading.......2006-08-13

I had to read this book for humanities 9 in high school and its really good, especially for a required reading. The way the story is explained is excelled and easy to follow, except that i am horroble with names, especially forign ones so of course i had troube following, but if you can catch on to the names, you will have an enjoyable read

4 out of 5 stars You'll Ace the "Mythology" Category on Jeopardy!.......2006-07-16

Edith Hamilton's "Mythology" is the most concise and readable compendium of its subject that I have ever happened upon (it's part of my required summer reading for AP English). While it's not a thriller, and the first few sections take some real endurance to get through, the reader is rewarded in the end. I recognize that the book is not meant to be exciting reading - it's a scholarly work - but some of the sections whose myths are only a page long are irritating to read. It was hard to stay focused when the characters changed so frequently. However, I sincerely enjoyed the myths of the great heroes, the Trojan War, the Aeneid, and the Orestia (which have a great deal more substance than the rest). "Mythology" has also piqued my interest in other classical works, which I hope to pursue on my own or in college - to date I have only read "Oedipus Rex" and "Antigone" by Sophocles. "Mythology" is probably the reader's best investment of time and effort with the greatest return in knowledge.

This is a good, basic collection of stories; you'll be surprised how entertaining they can be! Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars If you like folktales, you'll want this book.......2000-03-01

Not only is this collection marvelously diverse, but it's also incredibly easy to read. Though the tales still retain the feel of original storytelling, they do not have the awkward idiosyncracies you find in other texts with obscure (to the US) tales which have been litreally translated or transcribed. If you're tired of seeing the same tales in every book you find, get this one. It's a wonderful resource and just plain fun to own.

Product Description

PreSchool-Grade 2 Only the familiar plot of this well-known Norwegian folktale is recognizable in this revision. Gone is the cadence and beauty of G. W. Dasent's translation of Asbjornsen and Moe's text, found in Marcia Brown's version (HBJ, 1957; o.p.). Instead there is language devoid of rhythm and mystery. In addition, unnecessary motivations are ascribed to the characters that serve to explain the reason for their violent actions (the troll is hungry; the big Billy Goat Gruff is angry). These explanations serve only to dilute the power of the story. The full-color illustrations are humorous; the goats walk about on their hind legs, the smallest goat wears a diaper and sucks a pacifier, and the biggest wears a black leather jacket, to reinforce the point that he is tough enough to destroy the troll. The troll is quite scary, and although he does have a nose as long as a poker, his eyes are not as big as saucers; the illustration that introduces the troll does not even show his eyes. A better purchase is Galdone's version (Clarion, 1981) which is well-suited for use with large groups and more closely follows the standard translation. Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, Conn. This has fast become one of my 2 year old's favorites. She can already recite the book almost word for word using different voices for each Billy Goat Gruff. We get a real kick out of listening to her "read" to herself!

5 out of 5 stars Three Billy Goats-GREAT.......2007-04-04

I was just reminded of this teriffic retelling of Three Billy Goats Gruff. The suspense and pacing are brilliant. The illustrations are gorgeous AND funny. It was one of my all-time favorite read-alouds when I was a children's librarian. Galdone never failed in capturing the kids' imagination and story hour was always the better with one of his books. A MUST HAVE!

5 out of 5 stars The illustrations are priceless!.......2007-01-23

A delightful retelling of the old story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. This particular book stands out from all the others because of the illustrations, which are priceless! E.g., for the trip across the bridge, the bigger goats dress up the littlest one in a diaper; the biggest goat suits up in a black leather motorcycle jacket and dark glasses!

The book is as much fun for grownups as it is for children!

5 out of 5 stars Two naaahs up for the Billy Goats Gruff.......2007-01-19

I used the book for a class I'm teaching on goats to 3-4 year olds. The story was a great success with group. The children were able to take what they learned about goats and see it pictured in the story. Example, goats have beards, horns and hooves. All of these features are beautifuuly illustrated on each page.
F.Y.I. Many of the children were happy to see the troll wasn't killed only pushed off the bridge. It is sonething to mention if it goes unnoticed.
Overall I highly recommend this version over any other I have seen out there because of the illustrations, simple text and story flow.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite rendition of the classic fairy tale. .......2006-10-23

The kids just hoot when they see the biggest and meanest billy goat gruff dressed like a motorcyle dude in his leather jacket and sunglasses. The three billy goats (personified) have a problem and put their heads together to hatch a plan. They outsmart the ugly troll who lives under the bridge and finally enjoy a picnic of fresh green grass (checkered blanket, plates and all) on the other side of the bridge.

Book Description

Most of the vast audience attracted to the subject of Dracula know him only in his fictional, one-dimensional form: vampire! Yet the truth behind the historical character--voevode, warlord--of 15th C. Romania is at least as equally fascinating as any contrived account of his supernatural persona.

Vlad Dracula faithfully follows his life story as hostage, fugitive, prince, and prisoner. His principality of Wallachia was caught between two voracious predators: the kingdom of Hungary and the Ottoman empire. They tried to break Dracula with overwhelming force and terror. But Dracula turned their own tactics against them, and against criminals and factions in his own land, earning the name Tepes-The Impaler-in the process.

He was a strange mix of husband, father, soldier, statesman, and berserker. He annihilated 50,000 people--one-tenth of his own population. Cursed by his native Orthodox Christian Church, he indeed evolved into a legend. But even today he is Romania's Robin Hood.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-10

Vlad Dracula is a very misunderstood character. At a time when Islam was threatening all of Europe, Vlad, was one of a few who dared to stand up to the evil threat. Was he a tyrant or National hero? That will be decided by each individual who studies the facts. This historical novel is a good way for those who want to learn more about the real Dracula to begin.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect book.......2006-11-20

Dracula is one of my favorites and this book is outstanding. Very readable and helps fill in the history. The book arrived in perfect shape.

5 out of 5 stars the dragon prince a novel.......2006-03-31

This book is very entertaining and informative, especially about the politics surrounding Wallachia during the middles 1400's. Easy to read and hard to put down.

4 out of 5 stars Historical fiction done very well.......2005-10-08

The author did a very good job of taking the bare historic facts that are available regarding the life of Vlad "Dracula" of Wallachia, from sources both favorable and unfavorable, and turned them into an appealing novel which gives the reader a real sense of what the man must have been like. The reader gets a picture of who "Dracula" was and why he committed acts which have made him a legend to the people of modern Romania, and an infamous monster in the eyes of much of the globe. Having read accounts of the historic Vlad Tepes previously, I was surprised to find myself somewhat in awe of the man. In this novel we see "Dracula" in the context of his times and not just as some "monster" who committed atrocities against his enemies, as well as his own people. I found the book difficult to put down and read it cover to cover over the course of a few evenings. It truly gives one a much more balanced perspective on this infamous historical figure and the violent and dangerous times he lived through. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A readable historical novel about Dracula.......2004-09-26

Having no endurance for novels with endless historical facts, this story engaged my imagination without overdoing the research, which was just enough and not too much and didn't interfere with the story movement. Michael Augustyn writes smoothly and well, and I enjoyed meeting all of his characters, including Prasha, but what stays with me the most, long after having finished reading the book, is the ending and the deft manner in which Augustyn blended the historical Dracula with the fantastical Dracula. I also enjoyed the colorful settings, including the battle scenes, and the tense relationship between Vlad and his brother Radu, the latter living in the Ottoman empire, effectively sleeping with the enemy. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a different, more realistic view of the 15th Century world of Vlad Dracula, the harshness of that world and his determination to bring order and justice to it, which caused him to become known as the "Impaler."

3 out of 5 stars The Amazing One!.......2007-05-17

When i read this book, i thought it would give me a little bit of information about the greek gods but i was wrong! This book is filled with cool information about all the greek gods like Poseidon and Zeus!WOW!The problem is that the greek gods,Zeus and Poseidon are trying to kill Odysseus, the main charecter, and his crew because they went to a island called Troy to battle them. When they were in battle, they accidentely burned a church and made the gods frustrated. When they were on there way home, the gods were blowing and shaking their ship wich made them go to the island of the One Eyed Giant. That's were the giant killed at least 8 of his men and ate them. When they blided the giant, they escaped the island. Now they are on there way home but the wind god made the water calm so they were heading home.

I would recomend this book to Kids and Adults who are learning about all the greek gods and their powers. This book also shows how people in the days invented the trogan hoarse! This is a great book!

I started reading this to my 6yo before I went to work this weekend. I had planned to read just a couple of chpaters, but she begged for more. We ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting. After it was done, she asked me "Who wrote that, it was great?" I explained that it was a translation of one of the oldest stories that people still read.

This version is perfect for a first introduction to classics for the elementary crowd. It kept the excitement that you would expect, didn't skip over the scary parts, wasn't too gory, and the sentence structure wasn't overly simplified.

I look forward to reading it again this weekend. In the future when she is ready to read Homer herself, she won't be intimidated.

5 out of 5 stars Great Way to Introduce Young Kids to the Odyssey/ Greek Mythology.......2006-07-06

Young readers, especially those who are already fans of Mary Pope Osborne, will enjoy having this collection of books in their library. The series consists of six beautifully bound books. As with the Magic Tree House series, the imagery is great. The chapters are short and captivating. My son quickly read each book until he completed the series. As a parent, I am especially pleased that this retelling holds true to the original myth and has broadened my son's knowledge of Greek Mythology. Trenton especially enjoyed referencing the map of Odysseus' journey, which is presented in the opening pages of each book, and the sketches of the gods and goddesses, which are presented towards the back of each book. His only negative comments were regarding the editing. He found a couple of mistakes (omitted or misspelled words) while reading this series. Also he was baffled that there was one god - Mars - mentioned in the text who appeared to be omitted from the sketches and other references included in the book. However, explaining that Mars is the Roman name for Ares cleared up the confusion. Additional features of this series are a pronunciation guide (a must for youngsters reading Greek Myths) and a brief description of the main gods and goddesses presented in each book.

Mary Pope Osborne is a wonderful author! She has helped to bring so much information to my son in a way that is easy for him to understand. He started reading The Magic Tree House books when he was six and now at age seven he has read each book many times including the Merlin Missions, and he is excited about reading more. They are entertaining and informative. For those who want to spend more time with Jack and Annie as they learn more about the facts presented in the Magic Tree House series, Mary Pope Osborne and her family have many informative companions to the Magic Tree House series. As a parent, I highly recommend all these books.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Intro For Young Readers.......2006-05-26

We began this series before the 5th and 6th books were completed. My daughter (then 5) absolutely loved the stories and kept asking when we would get to finish the series. Her little sister was enthralled by the books as well. They were thrilled when our set was completed, and both enjoyed the much anticipated ending. Since then, my now 7 year-old has read through this series probably 3 times on her own. A few months ago, she dedicated a weekend to reading all 6 books -- with occasional Barbie breaks. While the Odyssey books are quick reads and by no means comprehensive, the author stays true to the original storyline in an age-appropriate manner and deepens young readers' interest in the epic. After devouring this series, my daughter will definitely enjoy listening to me read The Children's Homer (which is also a wonderful child-friendly version) to her. I'm sorry, but I have to throw this in for those that may not fully appreciate the author's Magic Tree House series . . .the Odyssey series is well written and not sappy like the Magic Tree House books (which, admittedly, my kids love to listen to OVER and OVER again on audio - and they are educational -- just so saccharine). Part of the charm for my daughter, who admires all things beautiful, was the hardback format of the Odyssey series; they are indeed lovely little books. Maybe Mary Pope Osborne should tackle the Gilgamesh epic??? I appreciate that she clearly loves to write accurate works for children and wants them to enjoy reading while learning something new and important.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to the Odyssey.......2006-04-08

We read these books as part of our study of ancient Greece. The kids absolutely loved these stories, and were riveted by the Trojan War and the Cyclops.

The literature loving purist in me was a bit wary of reading "watered-down" classics to my children, but then I read Jessie Wise Bauer's Well-Trained Mind. She advocates giving kids age appropriate versions of classic literature so that they grow to love the stories and are therefore unintimidated by the original texts when they are older. This made so much intuitive sense to me, and so in that spirit, I introduced my children to these great little books.

Book Description

Homer's epic poem, The Iliad, is one of the greatest adventure stories of all time. Rich with arresting imagery and memorable characters, its powerful metaphors still permeate modern culture. This brilliant retelling offers young readers an exciting introduction to the heroes of ancient Greece while providing the complete story of the battle of Troy. The legendary beauty, Helen, is abducted, leading to a decade-long conflict in which even the gods and goddesses take sides and intervene. This is the Trojan War, where the most valiant heroes of the ancient world are pitted against one another. Here Hector, Ajax, Achilles, and Odysseus meet their most formidable challenges and in some cases, their tragic ends. Rosemary Sutcliff makes such extraordinary stories as those of the Trojan horse, of Aphrodite and the golden apple, and of the fearsome warrior women, the Amazons, accessible to contemporary young people. Superb illustrations enhance the story's dramatic appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for an 18-year old remedial reader.......2007-03-15

I have been tutoring an 18-year old remedial reader in basic phonics. We first read D'Aulaire's Greek Myths, as he wanted to read about heroes. We then graduated to Black Ships Before Troy, as he had seen the movie, Troy. This is a great book. It is well-written, full of intriguing details and actions which are brought to life by Sutcliff. She is one of my favorite authors, anyway, so I knew it would be good, but it is GREAT. We can hardly wait to move on to the Odyssey.

I'm sure it would be good for younger, excellent readers, but it is a great hero book for older students and adults, too.

5 out of 5 stars Familiarity breeds comfort in the classics.......2007-01-04

Rosemary Sutcliff excels at story telling by making the epic story of the Iliad understandable and thrilling to a seven year old. I have read this book to my son at least three times, beginning when he was seven years old. He is now so familiar with the story and characters of the Iliad as a result of Black Ships Before Troy that to read Homer's Iliad will simply mean meeting these familiar characters again. Sutcliff's writing is so engaging that parents as well will enjoy this book. An absolute bonus is the excellent illustrations by Alan Lee.

4 out of 5 stars Very good retelling--but not the best.......2006-12-20

My seven year old and I read this together immediately after finishing the version of the Iliad retold by Ian Strachan and illustrated by Viktor Ambrus. While Sutcliff and Lee's effort is a good one, and I would recommend it highly, Strachan and Ambrus's is superior: the language is tighter and less florid, the artwork more dynamic and compelling. Unfortunately, the Strachan version is out of print and hard to find, but this one is a more than acceptable substitute.

Sutcliff's language is full (to the point of distraction) of similes and other figures of the "wine-dark sea" sort, which like a tongue-tingling seasoning (see what I mean?) is fine in moderation, but she overdoes it. Nevertheless, it's a good introduction to the Iliad. At 113 pages, it's possible to read this at bedtime over a week if you've checked it out from the school library, as my son did.

But do check out my review of the Strachan version.

5 out of 5 stars Black Ships Before Troy.......2006-08-07

Most anyone knows that they are supposed to read Homer's Iliad at some point in their life, but many are intimidated by its complexity. For starters, try Rosemary Sutcliff's Black Ships Before Troy. It is a beautiful and delightful read for all ages. You can easily sort the characters and get a grip on the plot without wading through the epic or the longer narrative. Once you have done this, you may muster the courage to attack the Iliad itself and impress all of your friends, or you can just let them think you are an expert in ancient literature after Black Ships Before Troy.

5 out of 5 stars By a 11 year old boy.......2006-01-13

This is about the wars of Troy and about how it started and why. The Gods were having a party in Olympus which was their home. Only one wasn't invited; Eris, the goddess of Discord. She showed up anyway. Eager to get revenge for not invitng her to the party, she threw a golden apple among the guests. It was a beautiful apple. In fact it was so beautiful that the three most important goddesses claimed it. They were Athena, Aphrodite, And Hera. They went down and met Paris, a shepherd, and they asked him to say who should get the apple. They said that if he would give one of them the apple, they would give a gift. He chose Aphrodite. Her gift was for him to have the most beautiful wife in the world. That is how the Trojan War started. This book is a thriller that will carry you from beginning to end. It was my favorite so maybe it will be yours also. If you ever find it, sit down and read it and enjoy your afternoon!

I am reading Mary Pope Osborne's Odyssey series with my 10 year old son. He is enjoying the stories and I think it's a great introduction to Greek mythology.

5 out of 5 stars all of this series.......2007-03-25

These books are excellent. My second grade class is obsessed with them. Some of them are even writing a play based on The Land of the Dead. They hang on every word, and discuss Odysseus' flaws on the play ground. It's so cool.

5 out of 5 stars tbreading@warsaw.k12.in.us.......2005-10-21

I use this book for an ESL English class. It's much more comprehensible than reading the poetic version. The kids seem to enjoy it, where I think they would be lost with the poetic translation in our textbook. All of the students in this class are low level English speakers, so this gives them something interesting to read without a huge comprehension challenge. They find it interesting to read about going to the land of the dead and then coming back. Most are Catholic, so it is alittle difficult for them to understand Hades and Persephone. There is no good comparison to what they already know.

Armed with warnings and advice from the ghosts of the prophet Tiresias, Odysseus is determined to finally sail home to Ithaca. 5 out of 5 stars Tales of odyssous.......2005-11-17

The Odyssey is about this man named Odysseus and his adventure to the island of the Sun God. It's based on the original book, Homer's Odyssey. He's got to go through some amazing things to get to the Sun God. He also has to keep his men safe, plus he has to deal with his men, because they want to slay and eat the cattle of the sun god.
Odysseus had to fight 3 monsters on his way to the Sun God. He had to fight the Charybidis, which is a giant whirlpool. He has to fight the three-headed monster that killed six of his men. The last thing he had to fight was the lady merchants that led you to their island and killed you or you drowned on the way before you got there.
Then Odysseus got to the land of the Sun God and he told his men that if they slayed and ate the cattle that the sun god owned their families would be cursed. Then when he goes to sleep they eat the cattle because they haven't eaten for a very long time.
The reason that I recommend this book is because it's a fun book for all ages and it is a pretty fast read. Another reason I recommend this book is because it's a fast paced historic fiction story. The last reason I recommend this book is because if you've read the other Mary Pope Osborn books, like the Magic Tree House books, you'll love it.
