5 out of 5 stars Tremendous reference book.......2003-10-23

As someone who has collected edged weapons, medals, and sundry militaria, this ranks as one of the best reference books that I have come across. The images are fantastic, and the text is well-written to boot! The author describes the history of the blood chit and documents the chits used by the Allies during WW2. A very good resource for the collector and an interesting coffee table book for those who aren't militaria collectors at heart.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT MONOGRAPH.......2003-05-07

Lost Hope is an excellent account of the history, development and vagrancies of the different aviation survival chits used by the allied air forces during World War Two. The book is exceptionally well written and jammed full of factual information, aviation accounts, chit construction materials, chit styles, stamps and issue numbers. The colour photographs are superb with very high detail. There is a lot of information as well as photographs. If you are a collector of chits, or are interested in their development and history, then this book is a definitive account. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive Chit Book.......2000-04-07

Mr. Baldwin is by far the most knowledgable authority when it comes to Blood Chits and Escape and Evasion kits.

More than just a great reference "Last Hope" is a must have for collectors of Blood Chits and other WWII CBI militaria.

Wish there were more books out about this subject.

Book Description

More than any other altruistic gesture, blood and organ donation exemplifies the true spirit of self-sacrifice. Donors literally give of themselves for no reward so that the life of an individual—often anonymous—may be spared. But as the demand for blood and organs has grown, the value of a system that depends solely on gifts has been called into question, and the possibility has surfaced that donors might be supplemented or replaced by paid suppliers.

Last Best Gifts offers a fresh perspective on this ethical dilemma by examining the social organization of blood and organ donation in Europe and the United States. Gifts of blood and organs are not given everywhere in the same way or to the same extent—contrasts that allow Kieran Healy to uncover the pivotal role that institutions play in fashioning the contexts for donations. Procurement organizations, he shows, sustain altruism by providing opportunities to give and by producing public accounts of what giving means. In the end, Healy suggests, successful systems rest on the fairness of the exchange, rather than the purity of a donor’s altruism or the size of a financial incentive.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and enlightening book.......2007-01-28

Kieran Healy does an excellent job of showing how blood and organ donation is not simply a question of altruism, a belief held by many. The author shows, in a convincing manner, that the social organization of organ procurement has significant effects on the success rate of the different establishments charged with collecting donations. Organ donation is an incredibly sensitive subject - after all, one person's life depends on another's death - so it is wrong to ignore the social and cultural context in which decisions will be made about it. A talented writer, Kieran Healy tells a fascinating story of an important subject that has seen increasing press coverage, but never with the necessary level of careful considersation that is presented in this book.

As a sidenote, the book's layout is very classy. Some books are hard to read because of annoying font and confusing layout. This one is a pleasure to pick up not only thanks to its content, but also the careful design.

Disclosure: I went to graduate school with the author and followed the development of his work in this domain. This book is a wonderful product of his thinking and research on this topic over the years.

5 out of 5 stars Sita is not afraid of blood, she is afraid of is what it can do........2007-08-24

Follow the further adventures of Sita the oldest vampire on the planet.

After breaking a promise and making her partner a vampire, Sita and Ray try to live a somewhat normal life. Until they hear of some murders in LA.

It seems that someone is killing people an terrible ways. Dismamberment, limbs torn off, and in some cases even drained comepletly of blood. In otherwords the killer is making it look as if another vampire is loose on the world.

Did Sita succeed in destroying her maker or is he alive and finding ways of making her pay?

Is this some new sort of vampire? If so, from whence did it come?

Can it be stopped before the world knows about vampires?

To find out you will have to read this book.

I especially liked...

How the book explained they new vampire. Normaly the peson is a real creep, but with superpowers he is even more of a menace. Quite scary acually.

When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...

Everyone says that they read it again. Not me I went out dressed in black looking for vampire victims......J/K

The author of this Book...

Christopher Pike

He has written a whole slew of teen thriller novels and this is one of his best ones.

I recommend this Book because...

It is packed full of action and vampires and a real cool way in which to make them.

I loved the first book in the series. This may better then the 1st book if possible

I don't recommend this Book because...

There is nothing about this book that I do not recomend.

Further Comments...

The beginning starts with Sita stating that she is not afraid of blood. What she is afraid of is what it can do.

5 out of 5 stars best book I have read.......2006-05-03

I relly do not like reading but this book got my attention because it is trilling I think it is thrilling besause the vampires are relly strong, fast, smart, and they can hear and see relly good beter the any thing.

3 out of 5 stars Slightly Better Than The First Book.......2006-03-02

Ray is adjusting to being a vampire. He is depressed about having to sever contact with his family and friends, and appalled at having to drink human blood. But Ray doesn't have too much time to figure things out. There has been a series of brutal murders in LA. Sita knows a vampire is responsible.
Sita and Ray are going to LA to investigate and look for the one who is creating vampires. The First Vampire, Yaksha, is supposed to be dead. Even if he survived the explosion at Sita's home, he swore a vow to God not to create any more vampires, and to destroy all other vampires. Sita has not made any more. So who is making the vampires?

A new character comes in: FBI agent Joel Gray. In charge of the murder investigation, he zeroes in on Alisa. Will she have to kill this well-meaning man if he gets to close to the truth?

This story is a better read than the first one in the series. A lot more action for one thing, a compelling enemy, and less of Sita musing on what a hottie she is. Pikes writing is a little better. Still, Pike throws in gems like "I like horny men. I feel they are true to their nature." Riiiiight.

4 out of 5 stars Love it.......2006-03-01

Absolutely love this book, and the entire "The Last Vampire" series in general. Following Sita's journey is an exciting and wonderful adventure, and this book is no exception. Sita is 5,000 years old and thought all vampires (aside from herself and her lover Ray) were gone, until a series of unusal murders force her to realize she was mistaken. She must meet this new foe, destroy him, and try to do so without destroying herself. A great (and quick) read.

5 out of 5 stars Good book........2003-06-08

This book is great. It's a nice sequel to #1, though it does become boring in some points.. There's small sub-stories that get told inside by the characters that dont really seem like they need to be there, but nonetheless, they add to the overall effectiveness of the plot.

I read this whole book last night. I just couldn't put it down! It was about a 3 1/2 hour read without too many breaks.. I found it took me 4 chapters to realize i had to go to the restroom and to actually get up to go.

The bad guy's mother is a bit off her rocker, being as old as she is.. Really sick minded, its no wonder that the boy turned out the way he was.

Anyway, it was a good book and i just couldnt put it down. I reccommend this read to anyone who is a fan of Christopher Pike. :)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sotry arc climax.......2005-08-22

Wild action as the crippled Anotsu faces a dozen sword school killers. Manji and Rin choose that moment to reunite and blood flows. Samura's complex story line is wonderful and his battles beautiful. For those familiar with the series, this is an excellent chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the story's back on track!.......2005-08-19

Last Blood is Volume 14 in Mr. Samura's revenge-quest manga, Blade of the Immortal. While there are some genuinely funny and sweet moments (the laughs and awws provided by Magatsu and Rin, respectively), the overall tone of this volume is dark and tense but NOT depressing. Anotsu has been systematically cut down, but now he will regather his forces (what's left of the Itto-ryu) and strike back at the Bakufu! Likewise, Rin reunites with Manji, and however briefly their time, she makes a long-awaited confession....

Needless to say, I lapped up every single panel: this series is very very well plotted. Yet I do have a minor complaint. Some of the pages seem rushed, and the lines, very dark and heavy. However, the one or two full page pencil sketches are still astonishingly beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars This series F-ing ROCKS!.......2005-08-03

All that is holy, this is THE manga to get. There is nothing better.

Book Description

From an acclaimed new master of fantasy fiction comes Book Four in the continuing saga of magic, adventure, courage, and fate on parallel worlds–mystical Eldh and modern Earth.

Blood of Mystery

A twist of time has left Runebreaker Travis Wilder and three of his otherworldly friends stranded on 1880s Earth in a lawless Colorado mining town. As they search for a way back to their own time, Grace Beckett–in present-day Eldh–journeys to a frozen kingdom where she learns her own terrifying destiny: to oppose the Pale King and his monstrous army in the coming cataclysmic battle that will decide
Eldh’s future forever.

If the Pale King emerges victorious, his master Mohg, the dread Lord of Nightfall, will return from exile, break the First Rune, and remake Eldh in his own dark image. And Earth itself, Eldh’s sister world, will be the next to fall under shadow.

Even if Travis returns to Eldh in time to align his calling as Runebreaker with Grace’s destiny as Blademender, how can two mere humans hope to defeat an evil more ancient than any world, more powerful than all existence?

4 out of 5 stars A fantasy with a Western inside.......2004-02-27

I enjoy Westerns, and the Blood of Mystery has a nice, traditional one right inside it! Sherriffs, gunshooters, and fallen women with hearts of gold--everything you could ask for, including bad guys in black. As mentioned so many times about this series, not very original, but somehow, engaging all the same. The lead character Travis, has transformed into a completely different person from the first book--both physically and mentally. He is growing up, which is a good thing, because he acted like a teenager, even though he's in his thirties. That was a jarring flaw in the first book, that this grown man was so childish and passive, so his rapid maturation is a good development. The female lead, Grace, is a boring ice princess, but her slightly clinical point of view is actually a good way to observe the sometimes chaotic action that takes place. The switching from world to world, and inconsistent and insufficiently explained magic can be a bit exhausting at times. I also fail to see why the character, Sareth, had to be such a pathetic victim throughout the book. The only man of color in the book, and he's USELESS. (Nothing like his sister, Vani, who is very much like a female superhero, with her black leather garb and vanishing act.) Despite it's flaws, this book, and the series are a lot of fun.

4 out of 5 stars The set up to a big blow-out in book 5..........2002-08-05

This book is pretty good. I thought the characters advanced a lot in this book, as well as got more interesting. However, if you are looking for BIG action, this isn't the book in the series for it. There is lots of action in this book, but the final blow-out has been saved for its own book.

Basically, the main characters are split into two groups--the group in present-day Eldh and the group in 1883 Colorado. The Colorado group has to deal with fitting into the society and waiting for Jack to show up. Interestingly enough, they have to deal with a vigilante group called the Crusade of Purity. That could lead the reader to some conclusions between the book and a commentary on real life.

The group on Eldh splits when Aryn has to go home to meet her future husband & takes Melia with her. However, this is ok, because she ends up facing up to her past actions that she thought were justified, and becomes stronger in her Craft. The other group is trying to find Grace's sword and make it to the black tower. Along the way, they meet some VERY interesting people....

By the end of the book, everything is in place for the beginning of book 5. I can't wait.

4 out of 5 stars Really good book.......2002-06-01

I liked this book a lot and in fact like this whole series. First off I've read books with homosexuals as the main characters, however I never read a book where one of the main characters is bi-sexual (Travis). It's pretty obvious that he likes both men and women and yet has the darnest time making the decission. I thought it was pretty funny with the scene of Beltan and Vani.

A lot of people don't like Vani but I happen to find Beltan more than a little annoying, this is just me however. For one Beltan gets all [mad] just because Vani happens to love Travis. One thing I don't understand is the whole destiny thing and find this to actually take away from the book. However over all this was a decent read.

5 out of 5 stars Must. Have. Book. Five........2002-05-23

Warning: This review contains spoilers, so I suggest you skip it if you haven't read the book yet.
I absolutely love these books. Sword and sorcery fantasy is rarely written this well. I really care about all the characters and what happens to them. That is why I am in agony until I get to read book 5. I SO badly want Travis and Beltan to get together. I'm pretty much indifferent to Vani. I think that the author is drawing it out to add suspense. He keeps hinting that Travis is going to get both of them, but he won't just SAY it. I realize that this is great storytelling, but it's killing me. And what the hell was that at the end, where Travis goes to kiss Beltan, and Beltan pulls away? WHAT?? Aaaagh!!

5 out of 5 stars Series Still Going Strong With Book Four.......2002-04-24

A word to the wise - it's best to read this series in sequence because each book builds upon the other. You could probably read it in a piecemeal fashion, but I don't think that it would have the same impact, because both the characters and the world of Eldh are evolving as the series goes on. This book is setting the stage for the upcoming battle for control of Eldh, revealing the main players and getting the pieces into place.

This book picks up the story after the catastrophe at the Etherion. The cast of characters has been split into two groups: Travis, Durge, Sareth and Lirith have traveled back in time to Castle City Colorado on Earth in 1883, while Grace, Falken, Ayrn, Beltan, Melia, and Vani have remained in the city of Tarras in present-day Eldh. The two main subplots are concerned with getting the Earth-bound travelers back to Eldh, while the group on Eldh are trying to get to Toringarth to get the pieces of the only weapon that will prevent the Pale King from taking over the Dominions. Needless to say, this is an extreme simplification of the plot. The group on Earth has to deal with a rogue sorcerer, a vigilante group, corruption, the arrival of Jack Graystone, racial prejudice, and the sheer problem of staying alive. The group on Eldh has to face the resurgent Raven cult, the announcement of Aryn's betrothal (to her surprise), their pursuit by the Onyx Knights, the mystery of Toringarth, and the secret of Eversea. Whew!

The interpersonal relationships are developed further - the bittersweet love between Sareth and Lirith, and the dilemma faced by Beltan and Vani. Ayrn is forced to face the results of her past actions, and her response determines the course of her future. Grace is still slowly rediscovering her emotional responses after facing the horrifying memories of her childhood, and is allowing herself to open to others. Sides are taken by the Witches and the Warriors of Vathris regarding the foretold coming of the Runebreaker, resulting in conflicting feelings in their individual members.

I am truly enjoying this series. The characters are complex, distinctive and plentiful. Since the characters are constantly traveling, the world of Eldh is being fully explored, including its various ethnic groups and belief systems. I like the interplay with Earth and Eldh, with their similarities and differences, and the bond between the two universes that is gradually getting tighter and tighter. I will definitely be getting whatever further books are issued in this series.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Vampire Series Ever!.......2007-05-12

I've read several vampire series, but these 6 books were my favorite. I've read the series several times. It's sad books like these go out-of-print. I bet people would still buy them...I would recommend these books to anyone. It doesn't matter what age you are, you will enjoy these books.

5 out of 5 stars This book should receive 10 stars!.......2004-04-05

I truly think that this is the best vampire book ever made.
This book is a must have for any vampire story lover! I read this book when I was in 6th grade and omg it literally changed my life. I was a very bad reader as a child but this book opened a door and introduced me to the wonderful stories books could actually tell. Don't think this is just a kid's book because it isn't, its so much more! Everyone no matter what age can enjoy this book and I hope it brings you as much joy as it did to me.

5 out of 5 stars This book brought Sita to life.......2004-01-07

I knew Sita. I was Sita. After reading this series (vol 1 and 2) I felt that Pike was born to write about Sita and still wonder if he has stories stored away in his drawers about Sita. I loved Sita and miss her dearly. I have read these books over and over again; time and time again. I'm 25 now and have moved on to some of Pike's adult novels, but this one still brings me back, and I hear Sita's voice speaking directly to me from whereever she is. Thank you Pike, for this series and also for "Remember me" and "The Starlight Crystal". You have inspired me.

5 out of 5 stars Pike- What would my teenagehood have been w/o you?.......2003-06-01

You know, I really wonder what my pre-teen and teenage years would have been without Christopher Pike's wonderful work.
The Last Vampire series is my absolute favorite of his many books, and has even hooked some of my non-reading friends. Now at the age of 20, I still long to read The Last Vampire over and over and over again.
A beautiful book by an outstanding author!

Book Description

This graphic novel is based on Blood: The Last Vampire, once the fastest-selling title in the history of Manga Entertainment. Benkyo Tamaoki updates this Vietnam War-era anime story to present-day Japan. The immortal Saya returns — still clad in her trademark sailor suit and armed with an ancient Samurai sword — to continue her holy war against the vampiric Chiropterans. Like Buffy the Vampire Slayer in tone but with graphic violence, this book is recommended for mature readers.

3 out of 5 stars Like anime like manga..........2005-09-30

Good artwork and a simple plot but with a slightly interesting, if twisted, ending. Sequel to the events of the anime, decades later, Saya is once again hunting down vampires - Chiropterans stalking teenagers. Will she be able to wipe them out or are they waiting for her?

1 out of 5 stars Not a shadow on the Anime.......2005-09-22

The plot was shallow and course. The artwork was uninspired and pornographic rather than erotic. It was an insult to a brilliant character developed in a masterful anime.

5 out of 5 stars Great purchase, great shipping, great experience!.......2005-08-22

I was very pleased with the quick and efficient shipping. The book was in perfect condition and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it! Thank you!

4 out of 5 stars It was pretty good........2004-01-30

When i got this book it was not what i had expected. it was pretty good as far as the story-line but it was quite graphic in well.....pretty much everything! but otherwises it was really good. i love vampire stories, so this was exciting as well as grusomely entertaining. if you are looking for a book that contains lotz of blood n' gore be sure to get this comic.

(i didn't really get the ending though..)

5 out of 5 stars Full of gore, but great!.......2003-09-02

I've heard of the DVD and I checked it out, but I didn't buy it, even though I was dying to get it! Well, one day in a book store, my eyes came across this book, and I immediantly took it from the shelf. I sat down and read the whole book in the matter of minutes. Right in the beginning, it takes you into the book and fills you with confusion. But later on, it all comes together and satisfy your taste, but also leave you confused, wondering and wanting for more. :) It has some nudity, well...a lot...kinda, and one part of sexual humor. It also has some language. If you are one of those people like me, who don't mind those stuff, then you will LOVE this book!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning...........2007-09-25

Finishing this book tonight the content is fresh in my memory.

I have to say, i am not the type of person that reads books. I stay as far away from books as possible. However, I really enjoyed the movie Blood The Last Vampire. As i'm sure most whom read this did.

Spoilers below....

I was expecting more vampire action, and a lot more Saya. But the story actually took a different direction.

It starts of with young High School rebel Rei(forget the word that was used)Protester in 1969 Japan. After their large group is attacked by police Rei makes his escape and witnesses a girl named Saya checking her blade after just killing a monster.

Rei is confronted by 2 foreigners and is knocked unconscious and wakes up in a hospital. He is confronted soon after by a man named Goutuda who claims to be a cop.

Throughout the book, Rei and his group of High School protesters...Try to figure out the answer to why there have been killings of several members of a very private organization called SR that their friend is part of. Fearing for his life they join Goutuda to help him figure it out why these members are being killed and why the blood is drained from their body, and why this girl named Saya transfers to the school and class of those members days before their dissapearance.

After another encounter with Saya, Rei and Goutuda are enlightened(after being kidnapped by the foreigners)In an extrememly long history lesson.

After that Rei goes back home and his final encounter with Goutuda and Saya takes place in the school, where its seemingly over...

The book ends in an Epilogue where 30 years later where it explains what happened to the boys after the events of the book. As well as Saya's final appearance.

--
Thats my somewhat brief summary of the book. Saya appears 4 times in the book, and is very brief each time.

This book has a lot of Very LONG talks in it. Somewhat interesting. They talk about corpses and how to dispose of a body. And about the evolution of vampires and humans.

I wouldnt call this a sequel to the anime movie, its more of a side story of someones encounter with Saya.

I would reccomend you read this if you really enjoyed the anime movie. It doesnt go into Saya's past at all. All we really learn about Saya is she is half human half vampire from experimental breeding, her being the only successful one. And that she hates humans and vampires but alias herself with the humans so that she can kill the vampires she hates...(read the book it makes more sense...)

All in all its a great tale on the life of a teenage boy in japan in 1969 and his encounter with a girl named Saya.

For a side note, I dont think you have to see the movie to enjoy this book. Because the only character from the movie is Saya. If anything, this might be a good prequel to the movie even though its afterwards...

P.S.S. If you are a fan of Blood+ a spinoff of Blood the last vampire, then this book and the movie, as well as the Blood the last vampire 2002 manga are different.

Blood+ is an alternate universe with the mostly the same characters but different approach.

P.S.S.S. There are also 2 more books in the Blood The last Vampire series other then this first one, I'm not sure when(if) they will come to the USA.

I hope I helped you understand this book a little better.

Not for children, kind of gory foul language, and drug and alcohol use by minors.

1 out of 5 stars A time of change..........2007-03-17

Japan of the 1960s was a nation of great change. Young actors and musicians have become the new idols of youth while they search for their place in a society that is changing. Girls have been given greater opportunities and the school system itself have been changed to create a new kind of Japanese citizen. The economy is growing, the government is facing the challenges of becoming a true democracy even while radicals from the Right and Left bring violence. The family unit, from the Imperial Family to the family of the common man, has been changed. Change, change, change.
Add the Vietnam War and vampires and you should have an action packed novel. But Saya, the vampire killer, is barely IN the book. In fact few scenes have vampires, of any type, in them. Most of the novel is focused on the student protest groups, the politics of Japan and Darwin. Rei Miwa is the main character, a high school student who feels powerless in a time when Tokyo is a storm of power. Most of the time he does seem to just go with the flow and many times I felt totally bored by the whole story. In the end the plot turns out to be simple it is just getting from point A to point B that took so long. How much can a student eat, drink and smoke? How much do we need to know about how police work? How much do we need to know about the history of burial? Tons of data - very little story.

1 out of 5 stars Infodumporama.......2006-09-16

I will be as brief as my disappointment with this book allows:

This novel violates the fundamental popular prose concept of "show, don't tell" for almost its entire length. And I did read it all just to ferret out the teeny tiny tidbits of story that were buried in it.

Actually, "violates" isn't strong enough. "Sodomizes" is better.

Page after page of boring pseudo-philosophical discussions and boot strap theoretics to justify the possiblity of rational vampire existence that have nothing at all to do with the STORY. Add to that little to no meaningful characterization that would get you to care about anyone in the book and you have a read that is not just slow, it's GLACIAL.

I'll take this book as proof that just because someone excels in one creative field of endeavor, they do not automatically have a right to pretend to have skills in another arena. I pity the poor translator. She must have spent a fortune in coffee to pull this off.

Additionally, the proofing of the English language version was full of outright typos and spell Czechs. For shame, hoping to ride the coat tails of a moderately successful little anime film (with a unsatifying and disappointing ending, by the way) by picking the pockets of people hoping for an action-packed book with meaningful details. Instead, what you get is a make-believe 300 page textbook with, maybe, a 5000 word short story hidden inside it. And not a very good one, either.

Next time, Mamoru Oshii and DH Press (also known as Dark Horse Comics), hire a competent ghost writer to actually put some real teeth into your project. A decent proof reader wouldn't go far wrong, either.

2 out of 5 stars Where is Saya?.......2006-07-26

Slow-paced. Political rhetoric. Where's the action? Where are the vampires? For that matter, where is Saya? Don't be fooled... it was nothing like the movie.

2 out of 5 stars This Could Have Been a Contender.......2006-05-02

Probably the best way to critique this book is to state right off that it simply fails to deliver what it promises. Blood was one of my early encounters with anime, a fine and chilling film that still sticks in my mind years later. When I found this book my biggest concern was that turning Saya Otonashi into the subject of a boys adventure story might spoil the fine edge that the film managed. But I need not have worried, Saya Otonashi is hardly the subject of this tale. Actually, it's hard to say just what is the subject of the story. Maybe it's the woeful lives of high school radicals in a conservative society. That I can connect with, but not in the context of something that claims to be horror fiction.

Rei Miwa is a boy in his late teens who is deeply involved in the politics of the Japanese anti-war (anti Vietnam War) movement. He gets caught up in a protest march that goes wrong, and in his flight from the police he stumbles on the scene of a slaughter. The victim is some form of horrible monster, and the killer is a young high school girl with a long sword and the eyes of a demon. When he wakes from unconsciousness later he finds that he has been suspended from school, and grounded to boot. But the sudden appearance of a police detective - Hajime Gotouda - draws Rei into a thickening plot that entangles his fellow radicals and brings him face to face with creatures that can only be called vampires.

Had the book kept going in this vein (sorry) it would have been a top grade story. But suddenly Mamoru Oshii seems to lose control of the plot, and everything bogs down in a pseudo-philosophical discussion of parallel species, the hunter hypothesis, Descartes, the international Jewish conspiracy, and the evils of the Catholic Church. Saya is reduced to a few walk on appearances and the reader, if he has good sense, promptly falls asleep. But the time things start happening the story has fragmented and Oshii rushes everything to a whimsical conclusion. It all turns into a more or less depressing coming of age story. I know you are sitting there thinking "Oh wow! A Blood novel." But pass this one up. You'll feel better for it.
