4 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-09-24

Simons is certainly an environmentalist, and I love that about him. This is the first text book I have enjoyed reading. He makes excellent points, though it isn't all totally workable. Generally a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of landscape architecture.......2007-06-05

This is really THE seminal instroductory book to landscape architecture. It's not really specific enough to be a true reference book, but it covers such a vast range of topics that it would be unrealistic to expect it to be. Instead, Simonds did a fantastic job of summarizing an amazingly broad field one subject at a time. Still, it is not so broad that the reader will fail to see the trees through the forest. It does include a lot of very helpful illustrations and explanations about such topics as spatial relationships and how they create different environments (and subsequently a particular design might be appropriate or inappropriate depending on the circumstances). But that is just one small sample of the kind of valuable lessons this book is filled with. I often start with this book when I approach a subject that is new to me because it gets me on the right track. In that sense, it's not just for beginners. And the 4th edition contains much-needed updates of the outdated photographs that are in the 3rd edition.

About 60 million Americans have high blood pressure, which increases their risk of heart disease. The two best ways to lower blood pressure without medication are lowering sodium in your diet and controlling your weight. The American Heart Association cookbooks always help you reduce the fat in your diet--now this one helps you reduce the sodium, too.

Don't think that reducing sodium means your food will be boring and tasteless. The American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook shows you how to use herbs, spices, and in some cases, spirits to keep your dishes flavorful. Learn how to make ingredient substitutions so that you can adapt your favorite recipes--"seasoning blends" like Herb Seasoning, Lemon Herb Seasoning, Salad Herb Blend, or Chili Powder Blend instead of salt, for example. The 175 recipes include modifications of familiar favorites, such as Tuna Macaroni Casserole, Arroz con Pollo, Beef Stroganoff, and Meat Loaf. There are also intriguing new recipes, such as Fish Steaks with Thyme, and Chicken with Yogurt-Cilantro Sauce. There are also sauces, soups, snacks, and salads. Thirty dessert recipes give you healthier versions of all your old favorites, including Peanut Butter Cookies, Fudge, Cherry Pie, Vanilla Pudding, and, of course, Chocolate Cake. All recipes include nutritional information: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat (total, saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated), cholesterol, sodium, potassium, and calcium. --Joan Price

    Book Description

he mass market edition of this popular guide to reducing sodium in the diet includes more than 175 recipes which are low in fat and sodium, as well as shopping and dining out tips, and two diet plans that prove low-salt cuisine can be delicious.

    Book Description

In State of the World 2004, the Worldwatch Institute's award-winning research team focuses on consumption, pointing to the many ways in which our consumption habits drive ecological and social deterioration, as well as how these habits can be redirected to reinforce environmental and social goals. As always, State of the World 2004 provides government officials, journalists, professors, students, and concerned citizens with a comprehensive analysis of the global environmental problems we face along with detailed descriptions of practical, innovative solutions—like charting the most environmentally sound path to a hydrogen-fueled economy, or accelerating the rapidly growing conversion of farmers worldwide to organic farming and sustainable agriculture.

Written in clear and concise language, with easy-to-read charts and tables, State of the World 2004 presents a view of our changing world that we, and our leaders, cannot afford to ignore.

    5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and Thought-Provoking... A Must Read.......2004-12-17

    Timely and Thought-Provoking

Once again the Worldwatch Institute has published an important summary of the state of the world, using a sense of both urgency and hope.

The special focus of the eight chapters in the 2004 edition is "The Consumer Society". The authors document how we in the "developed world" continue to waste vast quantities of water and energy, despite having access to technology that, were we to embrace it, could dramatically reduce our "environmental footprint". We continue to eat more food than we need, and our diet includes more resource-intensive choices, such as beef, than are sustainable long-term. We continue to "inventory" in our homes more clothing than we realistically need, in effect storing in our closets the land, water and pesticides that it took to grow the cotton to make our shirts and sweaters, and the diesel fuel to run the ship that brought the clothing from south Asia.

Consumption for many is a mantra reinforced by the economic systems of "free enterprise", advertising, government policy that puts great emphasis on GDP as a measure of aggregate well-being, and the right of individuals to make choices. The challenge is that unbridled consumption cannot be sustained, especially if the growing middle class in the developing world aspires to acquire possessions and to consume to the degree that people in North America, Europe and Japan have already been doing for at least twenty years. Indeed, there are moral and social justice issues about the developed world warning the likes of India and China to resist embracing a full consumer society, when one considers that a) the developed world continues to consume and pollute at disproportionately high levels per capita; b) so much of the raw resources the developed world uses are extracted from the developing world, and c) a great deal of waste generated by the developed world, such as decommissioned ships dismantled on the shores of India, ends up in the developed world.

I highly recommend this book. In addition to the well-researched eight chapters, which can be read in any order, there are several sidebar articles, usually each two pages long, discussing the environmental impact of our producing and using such everyday items as plastic bags, computers, cell phones, bottled water, shrimp, cotton t-shirts, and paper. There is even an article that describes the ecological damage done by our using antibacterial soap. In short, what seem at first glance to be innocuous choices of what to consume, turn out to have profound implications on the viability of our ecosystems, if enough of us make unsustainable consumption choices.

On the one hand, there is great disparity in consumption patterns from one corner of the planet to another. Some don't get enough to eat, while others literally kill themselves by excessive and ill-advised eating decisions. On the other hand, the authors offer guidance, in chapters such as "Watching What We Eat", "Better Energy Choices", and "Boosting Water Productivity". The good news is that most of us can reduce our ecological footprint, attain better health and greater happiness, and often save money, by adopting practices that relate to consuming less, and to consuming more wisely. As Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu once said, "To know when you have enough is to be rich."

5 out of 5 stars Reason and responsibility.......2004-12-05

By focusing on consumerism, this book addresses the practices of our current society and the impacts those practices will have on future societies. I found it provides easily comprehended summaries of factual data that allows its readers to consider the issues of global consumption from their own individual perspective and from their particular societal perspective as well.

Throughout the book examples are given of individual and community practices that affect consumerism and global health for better or worse. Examples of consumer trends which illustrate how individual members of societies of abundance are willing to make choices based on their perceptions of global health (such as sharing cars or buying organic food) are included, as are examples of communities, companies, and governments that are attempting to move toward more sustainable production policies. The scope of the book is broad, well-indexed, and documented enabling opportunities for follow up research on material of interest. Additionally, the writers reach for an inclusive approach to personal and global well-being by emphasizing the inherent sociability of the human species and the need for solutions that are not just environmentally responsible but are globally equitable as well.

3 out of 5 stars THREE STARS BECAUSE THERE ARE POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVES!!.......2004-10-08

The alternatives the good reviewer asks for are to be found on newenergymovement.org I, too, get very frustrated to hear of all the "facts" and then have the people involved deny there are any alternative possibilities ever because the world is flat!!

5 out of 5 stars Food for thoughts........2004-02-28

Although I like the extended reading list provided by angry-bear and agree that SOTW 2004 provides mostly facts than solutions, I wouldn't say that it is disappointing. On the contrary, this is what the series is all about. Facts are the food for thoughts, and I dare to say that every reader of SOTW has her/his own ways of facing the challenge.

The reasons are simple. The dire facts prompt us to think, to act, rather than simply to sit back in distress.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Read on Interesting Character.......2006-05-13

In my opinion, Lamers has written an excellent biography of a general, William Rosecrans, who indeed was on the edge of glory as the book's title suggests.

While the focus is on Rosecrans' Civil War service, there are also descriptions of his involvement with his family, businesses, early life, and political involvements.

Indeed, had Rosecrans won the Battle of Chickamauga, quite possibly he, not Grant or Sherman, would have come out of the Civil War as the preeminant Northern general and could very well have been President of the United States had he chosen to run for the office. With Rosecrans' previous victories at Corinth, Iuka, Stone's River, the Tullahoma Campaign, and his earlier victories over Robert E. Lee, he could very well have been the General-in-Chief of the Northern Armies and would have faced Lee again in Virginia. However, this is only speculation and we will probably never know what would have been.

Lamers does an excellent job of describing Rosecrans' personality and how he managed to make friends and enemies in high places. The insights into Rosecrans' personality can be valuable to anyone in the military, business world, ministry, or anywhere else. Specifically, I learned:

    1. Get plenty of rest - Lamers and other authors mention that while Rosecrans had tremendous nervous energy, he would at times let the lack of sleep get the best of him. These same authors believe his poor decisions at Chickamauga were due to lack of rest that eventually caught up with him.
    2. Know when to talk and when to shut up - while Rosecrans made many friends, he also had the knack for alienating people with his foul language and scathing criticism. Had Rosecrans followed Grant's example of not being particularly critical of others, particularly fellow officers, Rosecrans and not Grant would have been General-in-Chief of the Union armies. Because of this, it apparently took only one mistake on the battlefied to doom him.
    3. Do not badger your superiors - Rosecrans continually bothered Halleck, Grant, Stanton, Lincoln, and other superiors with incessant demands and was not willing to maintain a low profile when necessary. According to Lamers, Stanton eventually had enough and was ultimately the one who took the command of the Army of the Cumberland from Rosecrans and demoted him to the obscure outpost of Missouri in 1864 after that state had ceased to be a major battlefield during the years 1861-1863.

In summary, an excellent book and read. My major complaint was the lack of maps. Since Rosecrans was involved in so many important Civil War battles, it would have been nice to have had more maps to follow troop movements.

Still, this is an excellent read. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Edge of Glory.......2003-06-26

I found this book to be one of my favorite Civil War biographies. Lamers provided insight into the mind of a great warrior; a gifted if not eccentric intellect; a commander loved by his subordinates if resented by his superiors; a general that is by far underated due to antagonistic relationships with those in significant positions. A must read for any Civil War enthusiasts.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect biography of an important man.......2002-12-16

Lamer's biography of William Rosecrans is by far the best ever written on him. It's also the only one, and it's over forty years old. That having been said, it's quite good, and stands the test of time rather well.

The biggest problem with reviewing this book is that there is no others to compare it too. Civil War military historians tend to run in packs, writing and rewriting the same themes such as Lee, Grant, Gettysburg, Lincoln, etc. but leaving other fields as bare as a Georgia field after Sherman marched through it. Rosecrans and his Army of the Cumberland are good examples of worthy but nearly ignored subjects.

The book views Rosecrans entire life, with the lion's share of it on his Civil War generalship. Lamer's view of Rosecrans is that he was a brilliant but flawed general who combined great successes with an amazing ability to irritate superiors (such as Stanton), fellow generals (like Grant) and subordinates (future President Garfield) alike. Rosecrans also has the distinction of winning all of his battles from West Virginia to Murfreesboro and brilliantly outmaneuvering Bragg at Tullahoma and Chattanooga, losing only once at Chickamauga, but it was an important loss and cost him his job and his reputation. Lamers takes the viewpoint that Ole' Rosey was partly but not wholly responsible for the fatal order to Wood telling him to move out of the line just as Longstreet was attacking with half of the Army of the Tennessee. As a comparison, Cozzens' This Terrible Sound, the most authorative account of the battle, placed much more of the fault at Rosecrans' feet. His later service in Missouri was anticlimactic but important.

The book has a few flaws, aside from not being long enough. The maps are inadequate. His conversion to Catholicism, one of the more interesting aspects of Rosecrans' personality, isn't covered in nearly enough detail. Neither was his post-war career, aside from a final chapter which basically said he was something of a failure as a businessman. Finally, his own writings are not nearly quoted enough. I didn't get the feeling I was meeting the man, only that I was hearing somebody else write about him. His personal life is all but ignored, despite the wealth of material available to Lamers, who was an excellent researcher. These quibbles aside, Lamer's book is a very good start, although a more detailed and up to date study is badly needed.

5 out of 5 stars The Edge of Glory.......2000-12-27

The Edge of glory is an exceptional book about a Civil War general who is much maligned in history. Lamers portrays Rosecrans as an exceptional General who was successful (if not brilliant) at the strategic and tactical level. At the same time he demonstrates his weaknesses that led to his own downfall and the mistakes that drove his enemies to relieve him. It is a great book for historians and military officers with many lessons that can be learned from both his successes and his failings.

      Book Description

Planet U places the university at the forefront of the sustainability movement. Questioning the university's ability to equip society to deal with today's serious challenges such as economic growth, democratic citizenship and planetary survival, it calls for a new social movement to take a lead in reforming the university.

The book reviews the university's 900-year history from medieval religious philosopher, to Renaissance nation-builder, to its modern function as training grounds for the world's managerial class and the world's largest industry. It examines diverse campus initiatives across North America and Europe and their traditional concerns of green buildings, renewable energy and transportation demand management. But it also demonstrates the promise for social and ecological progress open to the "planetary university" once the university takes its place seriously and discovers its new mission: to create diverse models of local and global innovation centered around tough new questions about what universities - and their societies - can achieve:

      • How might the university help move us to a post-automobile, energy-saving society?
      • How might universities help refashion the city to be sustainable?
      • How might universities be governed for sustainability?

Lively, engaging and perfectly timed for the UN Decade for Sustainability in Education launched in 2005, Planet U will have wide appeal.

Michael M'Gonigle, Professor and Eco-Research Chair of Environmental Law and Policy at the University of Victoria, is a co-founder of Greenpeace International and has published widely on sustainability issues. Justine Starke is a Research Associate in the POLIS Project on Ecological Governance at the University of Victoria.

4 out of 5 stars The university as sustainability catalyst.......2007-09-02

A useful and practical roadmap for positioning universities not only to address the unsustainable impacts of their own activities, but to catalyse broader "triple bottom line" sustainability interventions across society. Readers outside the USA and Canada should note that this book is very North America-centric; however, many of the lessons from the case studies presented therein can be generalised and applied in other national contexts.

      5 out of 5 stars A rare breed.......2006-06-16

This book is a rare breed. Few books come along and ask us to look at our social landscape in a completely new way. The ones that do offer us new strategies for making real change.

Planet U does both of those things. After reading this book you will never think of universities in the same way.

5 out of 5 stars Unflinchingly honest ,Quite entertaining!.......2005-01-29

I really enjoyed the author's tale.. Lighten up readers, and yeah, he is "just a gigilo" - he happens to excel at it and is able to describe it well ! Massimo starts the memoir by explaining what the Jet Set is and how it came to be. If for some reason you've lost your sense of humour or have a case of the "oh poor me , They're fabulous and I'm not" blues, then this isn't the book for you. I for one have not the slightest scintilla of jealousy of the lifestyles of the rich and social because the daily activities are a roaring bore from my perspective- Very heavy on the entertaining and social level- it's work to play.
In any case, Massimo has figured his ticket to reaching the inner circle and staying there is simple; capitalize on his strengths: looks, a fairly pleasant demeanor, connections and his sexual aptitude. His crime? He's a man. (Does the average reader think that in all of the traditional May-December romances of the 'Jet Set' that the female isn't thinking about how to parlay her youth and appeal into some tangible assets?.C'mon- this writer tells it like it is.)
Massimo does just that, although until he gets his bearings he is more of a pawn in the hands of the dowagers he has makes deals with. The Garbo chapters are a hoot- What a fabulous portrait of a character that kept herself shielded from prying eyes, very few people have been able to write about having any sort of intimacy with this legend. I've always suspected that there wasn't a great mystery underneath it all, and that's one of the truths that this lady kept to herself- quite cunning indeed.
After the training wheels comeoff, Massimo cuts his teeth on a new woman, the eighty-something gazillionaire that seduces him , for a price... The "strings-attached" relationship is chronicled in full detail, I found it fascinating - grateful that the writers have decided to leave out none of the strategy and scheming of either party. The rest of the book's tales are revealing of this particular strata's social order- complex and inconsequential at the same time. Massimo seems surprised when he is spoken of highly at times by observers- In my opinion, he seems like a breath of fresh air amongst those snotty old windbags- I think he gave more that he took.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!..........2002-10-11

Excellent book written with honesty. Mr Gargia has the guts to tell what a lot of people in the world are hiding. Besides, all these stories are true which makes the book interesting and entertaining.
Allan Starkie's style is intelligent and very enjoyable as in his previous book "Fergie".

      1 out of 5 stars JET SET........THE SAD SET!.......2002-02-28

I am sorry I ever picked up this book and read it.....from the writing to the tale of the male-hooker, Massimo......it's a very sad story. I feel sorry for the people involved that they would even want the world to know that such things happened in their sad and pitiful lives. They ALL need to get a life....instead of living off ALL the others. SAD.

2 out of 5 stars He is basically a gigolo...........2002-02-06

I picked this up at the library on the hope that it would be entertaining. It is for about the first 30 pages and then one starts to wonder - why does this poor man have no self respect? In his early days, the pictures in the book reveal an extremely attractive man and so it is hard to figure out why he basically lets himself become a gigolo to old rich women. There are also a few details I just did NOT want to know... such as him being surprised at enjoying oral stimulation from an 80 year old woman who wore dentures (note - he is about 30 at the time). Yuck! I would be embarassed if I were him but then, he does not seem to embarass easily if it will enrich him. It is also written in a "tabloid" style which gets mindless and repetitive after a while. I guess even Allan Starkie and his "PhD" could not improve the writing.

      2 out of 5 stars Pathetic.......2001-10-11

Massimo Gargia has written an account of his life among the Jet Set and what you think might be great fun is instead a pathetic and disgusting reverie of the superficial lives these people live.

After graduation from college, Gargia decided that he didn't want to work a real job so instead he used his looks and charms to worm his way into the jet set society. First up, he seduces the mannish 60 year old Cecile de Rothschild and through her, he meets her elusive friend, Greta Garbo (herself in her 60's). A brief tryst with her follows and he ends up seducing her as well, however, you can read between the lines and realize that Garbo was a woman who was not interested in sex (if anything, the chapter on her illustrates what a strange woman she was and it is evident that she probably could have used the services of a psychiatrist).

After tiring of Garbo's eccentricies and her iciness (she ignores him and is embarrassed while he chokes on a fish bone at a dinner party), he proceeds to his next conquest, a rich widow in her 80's. (Note: A strong stomach is required for the sex scenes - disgusting is no other way to describe them!) This woman (Lydia Deterding) ends up buying Gargia several apartments but their affair becomes the laughing stock of the jet set community. Believe it or not, Gargia does have some modesty and he leaves her for a nympho Countess, whose husband dies soon after they begin their affair. They enjoy the good life for a while until her funds start to get low and she kicks him out after he won't get a job.

By this time, Gargia has lost his looks and he romances a magazine editor and decides to start a magazine called "The Best", based on a frivolous awards event that he created (a big excuse to hold yet another big party bash). After all, can you really take an award seriously whose recipients include LaToya Jackson, Fidel Castro or Ivana Trump???

Gargia wraps up with stories about the Royal Family and how he ingratiated himself into their circle. Some rumors about a possible Princess Diana conspiracy are lightweight, at most. If Gargia's book does serve any worthwhile purpose, it does show how frivolous and wasteful the "Jet Set" live their lives.

        Book Description

This annual volume from the Worldwatch Institute shows in graphic form the key trends that often escape the attention of the news media and world leaders--and that are often ignored by economic experts as they plan for the future. Written by the staff of the award-winning Worldwatch Institute, this book lets readers track key indicators that show social, economic, and environmental progress, or the lack of it. This authoritative data has been distilled from thousands of documents obtained from government, industry, scientists, and international organizations into forty-five "vital signs" of our times. Vital Signs 1998 presents up-to-the-minute information on such environmental and sustainable development topics as global temperature, population growth, fossil fuel use, grain production, and fish catch. Each trend is presented in both text and graphics, providing a thorough, well-documented, and very accessible overview. Vital Signs is an excellent companion volume to Worldwatch's highly acclaimed State of the World series.
