Ever since the conclusion of Ranma 1/2, Rumiko Takahashi's many fans have been eagerly awaiting her next long, serialized project. The wait is over with the first volume of Inu-Yasha. The story begins in Feudal Japan (technically, the Warring States period of the Muromachi era) where a mythical creature named Inu-Yasha, half dog and half boy, pillages a small town in search of a magical jewel. He is stopped by the village priestess who takes the jewel with her to the afterlife. Cut to modern times where Kagome (a splitting image of the village priestess) finds herself lost in a time portal and runs into Inu-Yasha himself. Her reaction is priceless: "Is he a demon or a junior high school kid?" This is the magic of Rumiko Takahashi--she has woven an intriguing historical fantasy that is filled with horror, humor, and romance in a way that most people would not think possible. --Jim Pascoe

    Inuyasha (1997.)

    INTRODUCTION:
When I was younger, I was a big-time anime fan. Although little of the Japanese animation was being shown on American TV back then, what little I saw, I liked. It fast became apparent that the Japanese had a much better way of creating animation - one that fused seriousness and comedy perfectly, and one that would appeal to people of all ages - NOT just children. And in recent years I had pretty much abandoned my interest in anime altogether. However, I had always remained curious, and in the more recent years I had heard of a series called Inuyasha that was constantly getting praised. I watched a few episodes, and it wasn't hard to see why. The series was created by Rumiko Takahashi, creator of Ranma 1/2 (a series that remains VERY popular.) Although I liked the episodes I saw on TV, they started somewhere in the middle of things, and I wanted to get the story from the beginning. Since the episode DVDs were too pricey, I opted for the manga (comic/graphic novel) version (most animes are based on manga.) Read on for my review.

    STORYLINE OVERVIEW:
Inuyasha has one of those stories that's EXTREMELY tough to put into words, but I'll try my best. Bear with me here, people. Several centuries ago in Japan, there were ongoing wars, between humans and demons alike. In modern-day japan, a girl named Kagome lives on a shrine with her family, and one day one of the demons from the past pulls her down the shrine's well. The well is a linking point between the modern age and the age in the distant past, in which wars were raging constantly. She is revealed to be the reincarnation of a priestess who, several years earier, killed an evil half-demon called Inuyasha. But, through several odd twists of fate, she is forced to join forces with the resurrected Inuyasha, to recover the shards of a sacred jewel, which could be used to greatly increase the powers of and demon, good or evil, who gets their hands on them. Although reluctant to help at first, Kagome finally decides to help Inuyasha, realizing that the well is the warp point between times, she doesn't want to put her family in immediate danger. (I KNOW, that's not the best possible summary. If you want a better one, visit one of the various fansites.)

    OPINIONS:
Overall, I am very satisfied with this series - it's been a LONG time since I liked an anime and/or manga this much. Rumiko Takahashi has once again succeded beautifully, combining seriousness with comedy, and creating an excellent storyline fusing history and fantasy alike. It was great to finally get the proper introduction to the series. I urge you to get the proper introduction yourself, as well. If you just start watching/reading somewhere in the middle of the series, you may be left dazed and confused and judge the series based on an awkward first impression. DON'T make that mistake.

    CURRENT EDITION:
The edition of this manga currently available is actually a second edition - the first edition is now out of print and is no longer readily available. I'm VERY satisfied with the way the Inuyasha manga got ported to America. First and most importantly, it's uncensored. Many manga series get heavy editing when they get an American release, as do their anime counterparts. Another thing I am happy about is they "Americanized" the reading style, while at the same time staying true to the original projected vision. For those of you who don't know, the Japanese read from right to left, and sometimes mangas are ported in that fashion. Being an American, I'm used to reading from left to right, so I was glad to see that it was ported into English in a "left to right" reading style (and all of the images have been reversed to reflect the change and to stay true to the original vision.) Likewise, these graphic novels are almost two hundred pages each, and since each one costs less than ten bucks, they're a pretty good deal. Overall, it's great to see Inuyasha didn't butchered the way some series do.

    OVERALL:
Inuyasha is the best anime/manga series to come along for me in a long time. It's not hard to see why so many people call it one of their favorites. I personally recommend the manga over the anime, since the manga came first and is, therefore, Takahashi's original vision. Likewise, the DVDs are kind of a rip-off pricewise. But whether you decide to do the anime, the manga, or both, you're likely to agree it's an excellent series.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Manga.......2005-05-07

"Inu-Yasha" has one of the best stories I've ever read. It starts off simply, maybe a bit generic. From there though, you get to know the characters, and you really do sympathize with them. The relationships between them are not rushed, and the romance is done very well. The story gets better in every volume, too.

Anyone who loves manga should try out Inu-Yasha. It's popular for a reason.

There is a little nudity, but it's not done in a sexual way. Still, it's not something for small children.

5 out of 5 stars A well that serves as a time machine? Pure Genius........2004-08-04

Honestly the first time I saw this anime on T.V., I was turned off by the whole crazy psychotic demon stuff. Then I decided to give this anime a chance, and after the first episode, I was hooked. The story is about a girl who falls into a well and she ends up in feudal Japan. Bizzare? Maybe at first, but after a while you'll say, wow that well gos great with the story.
So I decided to purchase the first volume of the manga, and now I will definately say, this is one of my most favorite series. The story involving and thrilling which also leaves for many unexpected events to happen where they end up fighting countless hordes of demons. All in all, this first volume of the manga will make you want to buy volume 2 of this great series.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of this book for kids.......2004-01-31

Violent, gruesome, nudity. Should be removed from the shelves. My 7 year old son told me he read one of these books that a friend in his second grade class brought in. I purchased a few books in the series and we reviewed one for content. I was horrified to see that it talked about murder, a person saves a bucket of human livers and has to move to another town because he has run out of victims. There were pictures of nude girls on a few of the pages. Although it says it is for Teen on the back cover- Young kids are reading these books. My nephews, who are teens, think these books are for young kids. Most teens are not interested in reading them. Which shows that these books although labeled for teens have a young child audience. I am bringing the books I purchased last night, back to the store this morning.

3 out of 5 stars Inuyasha is pretty darn good........2004-01-18

I ordered the first two of the series.
I was pleased with the fact that they were a pretty good length, but I'm still reeling over the cost!
American dollars are bad. Very bad. Am so broke *droops*.
I love the story very much however, and Inuyasha makes a most adorable villian/good-guy. (confusing isn't it?)
I have shared it with a few of my friends. (Trusted ones mind you. Sooooo expensive to replace!)
They had a lot of reactions ranging from:
*yoink* "I'll see you after Japanese" *runs off clutching book muttering 'My preciousssss'*
    To:
"Oh, they aren't very good quality drawings, are they?" *gets head bashed in by me*
    And even!:
*Opens first page* "That girl looks really mad. Who is she?"
"Oh! He's a guy??? Are you sure???"
Yes. That really happened. That particular person also mistook Sesshoumaru for a female but I can forgive her for that.
I'd love to buy the rest of the series, but I'm pretty darn sure that I can live without it until the prices go down. One day.

5 out of 5 stars I finally read it!!! ^_^;;.......2005-08-13

After waiting for weeks, I finally got this book. Volume seven was one of the more entertaining volumes of InuYasha. Then again, the books with Sesshoumaru and InuYasha duking it out are always entertaining. ^_~ This is one of the best series I've ever read, and I hope Rumiko Takahashi will keep writing books like this one.

      5 out of 5 stars really good.......2003-09-02

Inuyasha is wonderful manga,if you saw the series on Adult Swim on Cartoonnetwork, then you should really get the Manga, its really good. It is about a demon Naraku who is is trying to gather all the shards of 'Jewel of the Four Souls' and Inuyasha and his 'gang' is trying to stop Naraku from doing so, and just about everyone in Inuyasha 'gang' has some sort of grude against Naraku, espeacilly Inuyasha. Also part of Inuyasha's 'gang' is a character named Kagome, she's from the future, and is the reincartion of a powerful preistess name Kikyou, and is the only person that can sense Jewels' shards and is a vital character. This manga is full of lies, decit, action, humor, some romance, and many other things, and its set in Feudal Japan. Its a must read, if you are interested in fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars Inuyasha is the BEST!.......2003-01-04

Inuyasha is the bet manga i have ever read!! Inuyasha is a hanyou or an half-demon. This manga is about a girl from present times that falls into a well and get transported to the past, her name is Kagome. Kagome is the reincarnation of a dread priestess named Kikyou. Personally i think Kikyou is the best female character and Inuyasha is of course the best male character! I' won't give too much away or i'll spoil the WHOLE story...hehe...INUAYSHA IS THE BEST!!!!!! ^.^

      5 out of 5 stars GO INU-YASHA!.......2002-10-26

We all know of the Half-demon Inu-Yasha, the girl from the futrue, Kagome, The Monk, Miroku, And the cute little fox-demon, Shippo. Well, Inu-Yasha severed his half brother's, Sheshomaru's, arm. He has been looking for a new limb sence. Naraku shows up and the trouble begins. An over-all great read!! INU-YASHA, RAH RAH RAH!!!

5 out of 5 stars Buy it now I tell you!.......2001-12-31

The Mermaid series was good, Ranma was better, Maison Ikkoku was great, and now we have come to Inu-Yasha. I'll tell you, I've read many a manga, but this series is by far my favorite. I'll admit to you I don't know any more of the story besides what happens in the first nine volumes, but as more keeps coming my love of them only grows. out of all of these books, though, only two I can call my favorites: seven and eight. If you haven't read the books I highly recomend you start with one,(no really), but if you're having second thoughts about buying this, STOP. Buy it, and buy it now. I assure you it's worth having.

          1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2006-03-23

This book is useless. They miss Sango and Shippou for one thing. and for another, NONE OF THIS INFORMATION IS NEW. I THOUGHT I was buying the novelazation of Inuyasha that was released in '04 in Japan which contained the first chapters redrawn by Takahashi and some other information, like what happened to Kagome's dad. Turns out this is just useless, everything in it you can find out from watching a episode or three of the series. And it's CONSTANTLY repeating itself. Yes. We know. Kikyou died. Now she's not. Why do they have to repeat it every other paragraph!?

4 out of 5 stars Not as bad as others have said.......2005-08-22

I found this book entertaining and definitely not as bad as the other reviewers said. It's not necessarily a book for the older fans; I believe this is something for the younger and newly addicted IY fans that aren't as well-informed about the series as others (especially the die-hard ones) as well as the ones that don't understand the dynamics.

It's not necessarily a Miroku-hating book, they just seem to poke fun at him, almost as if they're making the book like the anime, interactive with the characters voices and opinions. They depict Miroku as a lecher, yes, but mostly in jest (My advice, don't take things so seriously when reading this), but the other reviewers also failed to mention that they also show Miroku as brave, friendly and all around strong.

Take a chance on this book, if not for yourself as a collector of IY items then for your children or a younger fan you know. It gives enough information to let your imagination run around and think for yourself.

          1 out of 5 stars Miroku Haters.......2005-01-31

According to this book, Miroku is 'a bad monk'. One of the reasons given is the time he beat up Jaken, who tried to kill him with the Saimyosho insects. This book fails to recognize that most of the time Miroku is nicer than Inuyasha. He is always there to help Inuyasha, Kagome, Sango and Shippo in battle. His advice tends to be wise, he is extremely intelligent. In the episode with Juramoru and Kageromaru, he jumps in front of Sango to save her.
Aside from this, the writers don't know how to spell Tetsusaiga. There is very little mention of Sango and Shippo, and it is overall a substandard read. I don't idealize Miroku, I know he's lecherous and a con man, but this book made him out to be downright evil!

2 out of 5 stars Almost but Not Quite .......2004-11-16

This book has a lot of promise but essentially misses the boat from Japan. On the positive side there are several articles devoted to information about Inuyasha, Kagome, and Miroku, their possessions and abilities, and various Japanese words/meanings. The antagonists of the series are limited to Sesshomaru, Kikyo, and Naraku. On the negative side the book excludes at least half of the other characters prominent in the series. For instance, do not look for information on Sango, Shippo, Myoga or any number of other "good" or "bad" characters (several of which are mentioned in the featured chapters). Other minor problems the book includes is the lack of a consistent perspective and a casual/formal writing style. The perspective does not remain consistent between "I" and "we" (Who these pronouns refer to is never explained) and whether or not this is supposed to be a serious examination of the subject or a gossipy tabloid is also never decided. So one is left wondering many questions - how many are writing this? Is it referencing the manga or the anime or both? What's the differences? Is any of this based on actual fact (e.g. there are no books or episodes directly listed as source material)? Is this book simply to profess the writer's own emotions or thoughts about the series' characters, items, events, or progression? Too much excluded information, misinformation, and what could only be considered personal views made this a disappointing purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Rumiko has done it again!.......2003-05-22

Rumiko has certainly done it again with Vol. 3. I love every minute of this book. I was practically on the floor laughing. It is hilarious. Yet, it still has the action we all love. Believe me, this book is awesome. This is thee best book series I have EVER seen. You'll love this book. It's great!

5 out of 5 stars gotta love it.......2003-03-16

All I have to say is if you love Anime you will love this series. The graphics are wonderful. The stories are great. It has good humor with a touch of romance and horror. I could read these books over and over again for hours. I'm not just saying this about vol 3 either. All I have read so far are wonderful. But a slight warning, these things are so addictive.

5 out of 5 stars Inu-Yasha is the best series yet!.......2003-01-19

This is the best manga series Ive seen so far. It is an EXECELENT drama, comedy, and fantsy, all in one.
In the beginning Kagome is a normal Jr. High kid but when she accedentally falls into the sacred Bone-Eaters well she is tranported to the Fudal Age of Japan. When she finds herself there, she goes exploring for her family owned shrine. Except it's not there. instead she finds a demon boy named Inu-Yasha.
When she finds herself surrounded by the local villagers she is taken to the village where the preistes examines her to find a remakable resemblance to the high priestes and protecter of the sacred Shikon Jewel. This jewel can give the posesser vast powers wether good or evil. Kagome is in grave danger because many demons in the fuedal age seek the jewel. but when Kagome finds that the jewel is inside her body pretecting it, it gets blown apart by an enchated arrow that Kagome shot, it breaks and the shards cover the feudal japan. Now Kagome has to team up with Inu-Yasha to set out across the feudal Japan to find all the shards before the demons do.
THIS IS AN EXCELENT MANGA!! ...

          5 out of 5 stars wonderful series.......2002-06-28

I love each of the books in this series. I'm a fan of all of the other things I've seen by Rumiko Takahashi, and this series is definitely no exception. In each book there's a serious plot combined with just the right amount of humor. This series isn't quite as silly as Ranma 1/2 (I always get strange looks when I try to explain that one to anyone I know). In this book, Inu-yasha and Kagome meet Nobunaga, a young man who wishes to save a princess in trouble. The three of them end up having to battle the demon that has possessed the princess' husband and is devouring the souls of young women. In the second half of the book, Kagome has decided she needs to go back to her time in order to study for exams. However, demons exist even there, and this one has a shard of the Shikon Jewel. I think this is the first book that includes a little of the incredibly gullible Hojo, and there are hints of a possible romance between Kagome and Inu-yasha. Of course, knowing Rumiko Takahashi, that romance will be very very far in the future, but it's still fun to read about and very cute. I would recommend reading this series in order, or you might become very confused. This is definitely a worthwhile read.

          5 out of 5 stars Inu Yasha.......2001-09-04

This Manga brings us into the present and past at a cross roads. We learn a few things about the Half Demon and his disposition towards Kagome.Kagome's school and family make a few guest appearances.I'm really interested in getting Vol 4 and Vol 5 for my birthday and I recommend this as a birthday gift to a friend or a fan with the same enthusiasm towards this series!

I was really impressed by this book. I was especially surprised to see Kagome's face when he met up with Kikyou again. ^_^ Once again, the love-conflict thickens while rumors of young girls' dead souls being harvested are coming true. My favorite part was toward the end, but you'll have to see for yourself. ^_~

5 out of 5 stars the best inu yasha yet!.......2003-08-07

after reading each of the inu yasha books, like ten times each, i can truly say that this is my favorite. in this book inu yasha comes face to face with kikyo again, and kagome finds out how inu yasha truly feels about the two of them!! this book is filled with close calls, violence, creepy villains, comedy, and of course--romance! what else could you expect from rumiko takahashi-the queen of romantic comedy?! sure, fifteen bucks is a lot to dish out for a 200 page comic book, but it is TOTALLY worth it for inu yasha, and it always WILL be!! BUY THIS BOOK!

To me Inu-yasha is the best cartoon and comic book series. In this book Kikyo comes back to take care of some unfinished business to do... wonder what happens... sorry don't want to spoil it for others, just read it you'll love it.And for the people who love this book watch the cartoon series on DVD ...

4 out of 5 stars Amazing (not so) Little Book!.......2003-01-05

This book is soooooooo cool! I don't exactly own it (i'm borrowiong it from my best friend), I think I can give a pretty basic idea of whats happenig(based off the TV shows). Well, after Inuyasha pushes Kagome through the well that seperates her world from Inuyasha's, she goes back(of course, cuz they can't continue the series without Kagome)! Then they find naraku and they find out all about him and how he came to be and all that. Then they find out that Kikyo is still alive(god forbid) and Inuyasha goes and kisses her in front of Kagome and Kagome gets mad and Inuyasha gets mad and they all get mad and then Inuyasha says he really did have feeling for her, but she's asleep! ASLEEP!!!!!! There are nice sound FX, though, to make up for the [disappointing] ending (so it's only [disappointing] in my eyes...)!
