Book Description
Good technical people are the foundation on which successful high technology organizations are built. Establishing a good process for hiring such workers is essential. Unfortunately, the generic methods so often used for hiring skill-based staff, who can apply standardized methods to almost any situation, are of little use to those charged with the task of hiring technical people.
Unlike skill-based workers, technical people typically do not have access to cookie-cutter solutions to their problems. They need to adapt to any situation that arises, using their knowledge in new and creative ways to solve the problem at hand. As a result, one developer, tester, or technical manager is not interchangeable with another. This makes hiring technical people one of the most critical and difficult processes a technical manager can undertake.
Hiring the Best Knowledge Workers, Techies & Nerds: The Secrets & Science of Hiring Technical People takes the guesswork out of hiring and diminishes the risk of costly hiring mistakes. With the aid of step-by-step descriptions and detailed examples, you'll learn how to
* write a concise, targeted job description
* source candidates
* develop ads for mixed media
* review résumés quickly to determine Yes, No, or Maybe candidates
* develop intelligent, nondiscriminatory, interview techniques
* create fool-proof phone-screens
* check references with a view to reading between the lines
* extend an offer that will attract a win-win acceptance or tender a gentle-but-decisive rejection
* and more
You, your team, and your organization will live with the long-term consequences of your hiring decision. Investing time in developing a hiring strategy will shorten your decision time and the ramp-up time needed for each new hire.

A must for technical recruiters.......2006-11-14
Being a very experienced recruiter of IT and telco professionals myself, and also having written books on recruiting, I appreciate this book. There is not many books on this subject, and this along with Hodges: Technical Recruting must rank among the very best. Having said that I think the part on Internet sourcing, as well as online screening/testing, could have been much more comprehensive for a book published as late as 2004.
This is the book I wish I'd had when I was a hiring manager........2006-08-12
If you want to increase your ability to attract and hire people who will help build the company while avoiding costly hiring mistakes, Johanna Rothman's book, Hiring the Best Knowledge Workers, Techies & Nerds, can help.
The book is full of detailed guidance on each step of the hiring process, from creating a hiring strategy to making the new hire's first day a great one. The book provides templates and examples to help determine the required and desirable skills for a job, identify elimination factors, and articulate interpersonal and cultural fit qualities necessary for success.
Assessing skills in an interview isn't sufficient; it's how people apply those skills and adapt to situations that determine success. So Johanna details how to use behavioral questions and auditions to gain a clear picture of how a person is likely to perform in your context.
Hiring the Best will help you fine-tune your hiring process, make the best use of your time, and increase your hiring success.
Best Interview Questions ever.......2006-08-08
Even if you have a lot of experience with recruiting, selecting and hiring technical people or managers, this book can help. I recently needed to hire a new manager. I already knew that behavioral questions give the most insight into a candidate's experience and potential fit with the hiring organization. However, Johanna's extensive list of behavioral questions gave me a head start on writing an interview protocol that our panel of interviewers could use. I selected several questions from her lists that only needed slight modification to work for the position we wanted to fill. Not only did we get a great manager to hire, all of our candidates told us how much they enjoyed the interviews! Several said it was the best interview experience they'd ever had. Thanks, Johanna!
Great Book.......2006-03-03
Finally, a book that is focused on hiring technical people. Great read, very informative.
Top book on hiring technical staff from soup to nuts.......2005-11-21
As other reviewers have pointed out, this book goes all the way from first defining the open position through to the new hire's first day on the job. It contains extremely detailed information on how to handle each step of complicated processes like sourcing, handing the interview day, and making a final hire/no hire decision. Admittedly, her approach is very similar to what I'm used to from Microsoft, so I may be a bit biased, but this resonated well with me and what I've seen succeed in my hiring experiences.
I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who's new to the hiring process or who is finding they're not able to fill open positions as quickly as they'd like.

Not for kids..........2007-06-17
This book is only so-so as a drawing book, whether for beginners or more advanced artists. The pictures are weird, and not aesthetically pleasing, even for monsters. However, this is definitely not a book for kids. The pictures are frightening enough to give kids nightmares. Think horror. Not a very useful book.
Pink?.......2007-05-09
I ordered the library editions of this book for my grandson and another little boy and I was surprised that a "draw your own monster" book would come with a pink cover! I was also a little disappointed in the array of superheroes, but I'm sure copyright restrictions made it necessary to exclude Superman, Spiderman, Batman and so on. This is a case where actually seeing the book before purchasing would have been a help. Vona Van Cleef
Great book!.......2006-01-26
I can't draw very well, so I bought this book to improve my drawing. This is a Great book for beginners! Gives you an idea how to start off and how it should looked finished! Awesome book as a "get started guide type". And After you got the idea of how to start to draw the monsters you can create your own. Perfect idea for kids that love to draw!
Great basic drawing book for the young AND young-at-heart........1997-02-22
Lee Ames does another excellent job, as he does with his entire "Draw 50" series. His step-by-step format is easy to use and quite rewarding as well. Ames is the only drawing artist that simplifies the drawings so that anyone can follow and become adept at drawing intriguing figures. This particular edition contains a great variety of characters to draw and will be on and off any doodler's bookshelf for years

Very Fun Summer Read........2007-08-08
This book takes you on an adventure. When the main characters are stranded on a Hawaiian island they deal with sharks and other menacing creatures. A suspenseful, witty, romantic and charming book. Fun, Fun,Fun!
exterme at times, extremely pleasurable at others........2007-01-20
I really like this book for the most part. However, sometimes the author places this extreme emphasis on the fact that the guy is a nerd. We get it. Sometimes as she places said emphasis, she has the heroine acting as those "nerds" are of another species. What would a nerd do? I have to think like a nerd. This calls for nerd logic. I can't sleep with him! He's a NERD! It really gets redundant after a while. However, I like the plot. Just tone down the up playing of the nerd factor.
Different.......2006-09-13
Before you read this book you will want to know this is not your normal contemporary romance book. The whole "stranded on a island" was way to off the wall and then there is the way the author tries to be funny but just wasnt. I did not even laugh once and this was supposed to be a funny book. That being said I still did enjoy this book. It was not great but it was a worthwhile read. The silly way Gen the heroine talks in this novel was a little on the irritating side and I did skim through those parts but I found her a sweet character, and Jackson was portrayed as such a sweetheart. I felt him being so sweet and caring and having a great bod made him more attractive in this book that I never thought of him as nerdy.Everything about the book is so farfetched that it might irritate other readers but I did find it nice for a change. I did have one complaint in this book and that is the (sex). I was dissapointed that she led up nicely to it and then she fell flat, and after that nothing. But I like alittle steam in my romance so if you don't this propably won't bother you. This was a new author for me and I will probably give her other Nerd books a try.
A Fun Summer Read!.......2006-08-15
I loved this book. It may be predictable-but is fun! It is a great summer escape. Who wouldn't want to be stuck on island with a nerd? Well the nerd turns out to be this great hunky guy! I was able to just have kick-back time reading and wished that I too was in a tropical paradise-it has a good ending, too! If you think you'll like this book, you'll like The North kingdom (by Jordan N. Danniels). It has some hunky guys who aren't what they appear to be either.
Predictable.......2006-06-15
I thought I'd like this book because it sounded sexy, funny, imaginative. It was....in some parts of the book, but as a whole, it was predictable. The story line was cute, but the whole "mom and boss" romance was a let down. I gave this book two stars because some of it took me by surprise, but not much.
Book Description
Every spring in the nations capital, after a starting pool of 10 million kids narrows to 250 finalists, Americas top young spellers face off in a nail-biting contest. So electric is the drama that millions of viewers tune in to watch ESPNs live telecast. But this national obsession is much more than a sporting storyand this first-ever narrative nonfiction book about the National Spelling Bee immerses the reader in a unique subculture, portraying the endearing fraternity of brilliant, eccentric young word nerds who vie for a gold trophy, a hefty check, and a glorious moment of national fame. Author James Maguire, who like the contestants is an inveterate word nut, captures the agony and glory of this singularly American event. He profiles the top five spellers across the country, exploring their hopes and dreamsand strategies for winningas they prepare for their moment in the spotlight. American Bee takes readers behind the scenes at the National Bee, providing a narrative thrill ride as the tension mounts round by round.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring.......2007-07-14
Seems like too often we read news stories describing how our country is going downhill. Reading this book has been a wonderful antidote. Mr. Maguire says: "... the Bee is ... downright inspirational to watch."
He brings the kids, the event to life. It's so refreshing to read and get to know these kids. And they are just "kids." They are fully alive enjoying what they do. Our future is in their hands. No need to worry.
Spelling and Parenting.......2007-01-06
My 11-year-old daughter steered me to this book because of her interest in entering the spelling competition.
Maguire offers a detailed history of the Bee and a sympathetic profile of very different children with a common talent -- some with elephantine memories, some with a keen understanding of how words work and some who seem to have it all.
Parents might want to read American Bee for its account of how the competition has changed since ESPN began televising it and making household names out of the top tier. With the Bee now a "sporting event" on a par with poker playing, the difficulty of the competition and the time commitment required to get to the top put many adult pursuits to shame.
Maguire points up the sheer randomness of the results when great spellers must finally try "off-list" words and encounter obscure proper names or words borrowed from non-European roots. In a one-wrong-and-you're-out environment, he captures the parental battle to keep the Bee in perspective and make the spellers understand the greater value is in the journey even as our society places the greatest value on the outcome. No instance of parental misbehavior is recorded in the book, and I suspect that is because the people profiled have an exceedingly mature view on these matters. Even better, the champs are extraordinary, with some even working together online throughout the year to raise the spelling tide.
The lesson of keeping competition in perspective applies to any form of children's contests. The book suggests that the Bee has thought the issues through even as the klieg lights shine on kids who are not yet in high school or, in some cases, even middle school. Concerned parents will be able to apply the lessons of competition in the book to very different circumstances.
Captures the Bee experience!.......2007-01-02
James Maguire has written a fascinating account of the National Spelling Bee in American Bee. The work discusses the broad history of the spelling bee in America, focusing on the National Spelling Bee, as well as bringing us stories of particular spellers. As someone who's made it to "the show" as a finalist (86 and 87), this book really resonated with me. The essential speller experience -- hours spent drilling words; the thrill of (and sometimes disbelief at) winning a regional bee; the excitement of the big event in Washington DC; the camaraderie of the spellers; the gut-wrenching nervousness waiting on-stage; the agony of being eliminated; and the aftermath -- these are all accurately recounted in the book and brought back great memories.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.......2006-10-10
AMERICAN BEE is a great slice of Americana. James Maguire brings, a seemingly mellow subject of the Spelling Bee to new excitements, if only I had I known Spelling Bees were that much fun when I was younger!!!! Although many words are impossible to enunciate, the book is undoubtedly impossible to put done! Bravo, not only to James on a fantastic book, but to the talented and brilliant students he wrote about!
From One Who Knows.......2006-10-05
Up front I will confess my prejudice about this book: I'm in it, albeit as a minor historical character. For me the spring months of 1958, 1959, and 1960 were largely taken up by study of word lists, culminating in three shots at the National Spelling Bee.
But James Maguire mostly has fresher fish to fry: real time spent with real kids who compete in the modern Bee, lately popularized through television broadcasts on ESPN and ABC. If teenaged kids and their strivings to find identity and accomplishment have any appeal for you, you will enjoy this account.
This has been a very good year for spelling bees. ABC put the 2006 final rounds on prime-time TV. The film "Akeelah and the Bee" vividly captured the home-front and on-stage drama of the Bee, taking off where the 2002 documentary "Spellbound" left off. Starbucks promoted the film with an attractive sprinkling of coasters, coffee collars, mugs, and flashcards decorated with foot-long winning words from the national Bee. The musical "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" continues to play on Broadway and in regional companies.
Now James Maguire gives us a broad and entertaining journalistic book on the subject. He profiles five competitors in depth, having befriended them, visited their homes, and hung out with them among family and friends as they balance "normal" schoolwork and activities with the single-minded pursuit of exotic words and etymology. He follows them to the national competition in Washington, which equals any major-league sporting event in risk and suspense. In between episodes, to break the tension, he light-heartedly fills us in on the mottled history of English words and dictionaries, making it clear how and why we reached the hopeless confusion of modern spelling.
Maguire is an engaging writer and does complete justice to the Bee experience. He brings out the themes of ambition, concentration, luck, anxiety, coping with failure, and support of family as they play out over the considerable age range of the competitors -- anywhere between 9 and 14. Just as most of us enjoy sports dramas whether or not we ever kicked a ball straight, I believe all of us, former spellers or not, can recognize ourselves in these kids as they set an impossible goal and go for it.

Favorite Nerd.......2007-10-01
Other reviewers have given a plot run down so I won't do a repeat. I just wanted to say that this is my favorite of the 'Nerd' series...so far. They're all great and I would recommed every one. This just made me laugh the most, which is saying a lot because their all hilarious. If you haven't read the 'Nerds' then you're missing out! And if you like this author then try Jennifer Crusie.

The third book in Ms. Thompson's on-going NERD Series, NERD GONE WILD does everything but fail to disappoint. This book joins together another no-nonsense heroine in the form of spunky Ally Jarrett, a nerd-in-disguise hero, Mitchell Carruthers, and a set of chilly circumstances that's bound to heat up even the most jaded romance reader.
For Ally, there's only been on goal for as long as she can remember-head to Alaska, that glacial state where moose outnumber humans ten to one, and take photographs of the wildlife. So, her grandmother died and left her millions? That's nothing but a blip on her Alaska-trekking radar. So, she needs to sign about a million pages of paperwork to transfer deeds, settle estates, take charge of stocks? She can do that, if scrawling her name will get her on that plane to the wilderness faster. So, she has to deal with pencil-pushing, fashion-failure Mitchell to get all of her grandmother's affairs in order? It's a tough task, but if it will lead to escape in the freezing wilds of Alaska, she'll do what she needs to do.
She arrives in Porcupine, Alaska, free of social restraints and one wardrobe-challenged legal adviser, and she's finally free to embark on the adventures that Alaska has to offer. Sort of. That is, she would have been able to embark on adventures, if she hadn't been waylaid by Betsy, the proprietor of the Loose Moose lodge, on her way out the door with her camera. And if one Mitchell Carruthers, dressed in a gigantic orange parka that appeared to be the offspring of a mating between a giant emergency cone and a dreamsicle, hadn't shown up at the lodge just as she was attempting to leave. And, of course, if a blizzard roaring into town hadn't forced said fashion-disaster, geek in a suit, nerd with a pocket protector, to become the second guest at a lodge in the middle of nowhere.
Mitchell, of course, isn't just a card-carrying member of Nerds-R-Us. He's a private investigator and a bodyguard, masquerading as a simple assistant to Ally's late grandmother. He was hired to do much more than protect the financial assets of the Jarrett fortune-but he seems to be getting side-tracked by the very personal assets of one Miss Ally Jarrett. Too bad Ally can't do anything but shudder at his geek disguise every time she looks at him.
What follows is a hilarious romp through the Alaskan wilderness, some chilly days avoiding danger, and some hot, hot nights between the sheets. Kudos to Ms. Thompson for another great NERD book. I, for one, can't wait to see what comes next.
Disappointing.......2006-09-21
This author has so much potential, but fails to deliver a great book. This book was boring to say the least. It takes place in Alaska, around a bar called the Top Hat and the inn they stay at with a unusual owner by the name of Betsy. Ally is boring, Mitch is boring, the only part of the story that was not boring was the strip poker game. I did not get Vivian's weird sex ideas and how they even relate to the story at all. I felt annoyed by the emphasis she put on it (I am far from being a prude). But it had no barring on the story what so ever.
The story line here was boring also, a rich woman and her not so nerdy assistant/bodyguard. This book was titled Nerd Gone Wild. He was not even really a nerd. Disappointing. The ending was abrupt and blah. And the letter written to Ally at the end (stupid) why would someone do that. I guess Ally counld not figure it out on her own how much she cared about Mitch. Save your money and skip this one.
This is the second Nerd book by this author that I have purchased and it will be my last. If you want to try one try - Nerd in Shining Armor. It was better that this disaster.
Sex and a Murderous plot in sub-zero paradise.......2005-12-03
`Nerd Gone Wild' by Vicki Lewis Thompson is a mix of sweet romances and Villains who like S&M. Ally Jarret goes to Alaska to enjoy some new found freedom but her grandmother hires a bodyguard to protect her from corrupt money stealing people. The mix of small town Alaska who talk about sex all the time and the interesting storylines this was a fun erotic novel. This was nice quick read - enjoy! I would also suggest Body Check by Deirdre Martin , `Drive me Crazy' by Kate Angell , The Ice House by Minette Walters and `Saving Allegheny Green' by Lori Wilde.
This was a VERY sexy story, graphic at times! .......2005-08-29
The beautiful Alaskan winter-wilderness setting and the colorful secondary characters added degrees of depth, as did the adventuresome storyline of uncovering Uncle Kurt and his accomplice Vivian's motives and plot to swindle Ally out of her inheritance. I enjoyed this story, although not as much as the original Nerd book, perhaps because Mitch wasn't a true Nerd, but rather a hunky undercover PI/bodyguard using a Nerd disguise.

Endearing characters.......2007-09-07
Heroes in contemporary romance all stem from the common mold of Navy SEALs, bodyguards, sports athletes, billionaires and detectives. Known for amusing yet uniquely sensual "nerdy" books, Vicki Lewis Thompson's TALK NERDY TO ME managed to strike a fresh appeal with its 6-foot-5 electrical engineering hero (tall, dark and handsome of course) and fashion model with very creative aspirations building inventions. Common interests in science and technology, yet profoundly contrasting backgrounds and personalities, weld the attraction in TALK NERDY TO ME and shortly thereafter, the love. I found all the characters in TALK NERDY TO ME very endearing and the h/h chemistry crackled with a resounding electricity. The sexual innuendo in the technical jargon was generally funny and sexy too, though a bit cheesy at times. I overlooked some of the technical inconsistencies mainly because Vicki Lewis Thompson definitely has a knack for making brainy talk sound like an aphrodisiac. I really enjoyed the first half of the novel, but I thought much of the later parts in this 357-page paperback failed to maintain the first half's excitement and engagement. The resolution to the primary plot at the end was quick and empty, and I found the Where-Are-They-Now epilogue four years after-the-fact, extremely on the cornball cheesy side. Over-the-top careers were handed out to everyone in the epilogue. Much of the novel takes place over the course of one night, and it felt like a draining, episodic marathon: pizza, fix washer, take Manny and Kyle to see Rick and Eunice next door, eat, drop off Rick, block off damaged back door, make love, head over to mom & Aunt Myrtle's, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, you get the point. The plotting and pacing are subpar, the settings deficient, the prose below average. Still, the likable, refreshing characters and light-hearted tone relays an entirely readable experience, and for half the time, an entertaining fare. The sensuality isn't bad, but Anne Stuart's INTO THE FIRE (***) still takes the prize for the most sizzling contemporary romance I've read to date (admittedly, that list is limited).
Another winner!.......2007-01-01
I love these Nerd books by Vickie Lewis Thompson. I first discovered her Harlequin titles and fell for her inventive stories and characters. She has continued that trend with her Nerd series.
Loaded With Quirky Fun.......2006-05-30
As a long-time fan of Ms. Thompson's, her latest book wasn't quite as good as my expectations for it, but I still enjoyed the story. The heroine and hero are both unique and supported by a quirky cast of secondary characters. If you are first-time reader of Ms. Thompson's I wouldn't suggest starting with this book, but do pick it up for a fun afternoon read.
Romance & Comedy.......2006-04-18
New York fashion model, Eve Dupree dreams of being an inventor. Modeling is what pays the bills; inventing is what feeds Eve's soul. Eve is currently working on a top secret project in her garage. But she needs a little help from the local nerd to get her invention off the drawing board and into the air.
Engineer Charlie Shepherd finds Eve's intellect incredibly sexy. Add that to her great looks and Eve presents Charlie with quite a complication. For Charlie has big plans. Plans to move away to pursue a goal he can never achieve in small town Middlesex, Connecticut. But Charlie finds Eve a temptation he cannot resist.
Eve finds Charlie pretty irresistible too. But someone is trying to shut down Eve's project and Eve doesn't know who to trust. She has to question the loyalty of everyone around her. Including her sexy nerd, Charlie.
Talk Nerdy to Me is my first "nerd" experience. The title caught my attention and I decided to give it a try. I enjoyed my afternoon with the nerds, Eve and Charlie. This is, however, a book that will not appeal to all readers as it is very quirky with quite a few unbelievable elements. Lucky for me, I don't let reality interfere with my reading experience.
I found Ms. Thompson's humor delightfully flakey. The characters were engaging and well-rounded. The plot, however, was a little over the top. If this book were a straight contemporary romance, I'd be completely unforgiving and unable to suspend disbelief. What saves this book is it's comedy element. Comedies allow me to accept elements that normally would cause me to roll my eyes. If you enjoy comedy in your romance, you'll enjoy Talk Nerdy to Me.

Fun characters, but the nerdy talk . . . ew........2006-04-07
Good parts: The characters are a hoot. While many were farfetched, they were believable enough to suspend disbelief and just enjoy. The book was fun, and I laughed many times.
Not as good parts: The plot behind it was kind of predictable, but that wasn't a major problem because the people were interesting. However, the "nerdy talk" during sex was just too over the top. It was just kind of . . . icky, for lack of a better word, and really turned me off the book every time I got to one of those scenes.

Customer Reviews:
I love the nerd books.......2007-09-28
Just like the title says, I love the nerd books. These are not a series, so yo can pick up anyone of them and start reading. They are a light hearted, funny, quick read.
A pretty good edition to the Nerd series.......2007-06-16
On one level, I really did enjoy the book, but on another, it was just average.
The first VLT book I read was her third Nerd book, Nerd Gone Wild, which I absolutely adored. It was just such a new, unique concept. Most romance books tend to have perfect hero and heroines, but in the Nerd books, VLT gives you some nerdy traits. They're not hardcore nerds, the guys still have some alpha-male traits, and the females are still sexy and pretty. They're just geeky. It's still a great concept. I also enjoy VLT's writing. She writes some great sex scenes, and her language is very readable and fitting modern young adults. The characters think and talk like your average young person. It's nice to read. Plus, she's got a great sense of humor.
So I loved Nerd Gone Wild and went and got her two previous Nerd books, and since then have bought her next ones as soon as they came out. And while I enjoyed all of them, for the most part, the uniqueness wears off, and the whole idea gets a little old. Even so, Nerds Like It Hot was still pretty fun to read. This book, and the Nerd series as a whole, are just fun, light-hearted reads.
Character and romance wise on this one, I don't really have any complaints. I liked all the characters, and the romance - while not particularly cute or sappy - was nice. I believed the chemistry between them. The plot made sense and worked. I loved the whole Nerd-themed cruise idea and how she worked it into the book. That was fantastic. I wouldn't have minded more of that part of the story. And all the supporting characters were great. I loved Cora.
I had perhaps two complaints overall with the book. The first being the lack of any sort of guessing as to who was after Gillian. You know right off the bat who the bad guy is, and you know exactly how he plans to go after her. VLT even does POV scenes with the bad guy that let you know before hand exactly how he plans to attack her. It took any suspense out of the book. I think it would have worked better if she'd been more vague in that area so that the readers had more to ponder and guess about. And I could have done without all those in-depth scenes about the antagonist's activities
My second complaint is just a preference for me. I would have liked to see more down-time scenes between Gillian and Lex. Most of their time together was very specific and generally plot or sex oriented. They didn't have any sort of casual scenes where they just talked to each other or got to know each other. I think if they'd done that, it would have made the possibility of a lasting relationship between Gillian and Lex make just a bit more sense because really, a lot of their relationship was based on some heavy-duty sexual chemistry. If they'd known each other more thoroughly, I would have minded the ending quite so much, or thought it was just a little too abrupt.
Basically, and enjoyable, fun read. Probably what someone would call a "beach read". It's not meant to be serious or plot-y. It's hot and funny with a smidge of suspense. If you've read any of her other Nerd books, you'll like this one.
Not As Good As The Others.......2006-12-28
I liked this book and love the series but this book just isn't as good as the others. I'm not going to write a plot summary because so many others have already wrote it. However, I will say that the characters didn't really connect. I didn't feel like that were that well developed. I felt that the plot just wasn't that good and there was no mystery about anything. I didn't like how it just wrapped up in a nice little package in about 20 pages. I do still like the concept and will read her next book about Valentine's Day but if this continues maybe the series has just ran its course. I would recommend the other books in this series.
some moments of hilarity but.............2006-10-25
Gillian McCormick is generally a shy, retiring Hollywood makeup artist but when she witnesses a murder committed by the stepson of a Mafia boss, she knows it is time to go into hiding. Her elderly-only-in-age friend, Cora, convinces her the best disguise is to mimic the flamboyant Marilyn Monroe while escaping on a cruise designated for nerds. Cora enlists the help of private investigators, Lex Manchester and Dante Fiorello, as bodyguards who must pose as nerds. Meanwhile, the murderer, Neil Rucker, has a disguise of his own- his secret lifestyle has everyone convinced he is the sinfully sexy Nancy Roth. What will happen when this bizarre cast of characters sets sail on the nerd cruise?
NERDS LIKE IT HOT has some moments of sheer ingenuity. The scenes involving the cross-dressing Neil Rucker/Nancy Roth were entertaining for the most part. Nancy's character, while bizarre to the extreme, was perhaps the strongest and best developed of all of the characters. Neil Rucker simply paled in comparison. However, one scene in particular between Nancy and Jared Stevenson, the organizer of the cruise, was a bit over-the-top and seemed unnecessary. The concept of a female impersonator as the stepson of a top Mafia boss was hilarious overall, though, and had this reviewer laughing through several incidents.
Unfortunately, the rest of the book isn't as funny and seemed almost like a farce. Gillian's metamorphosis into Marilyn Monroe wasn't believable nor was Lex's regression into nerdiness. While the physical chemistry between the two characters is evident, the story drags and this reviewer had difficulty caring about their romance as their personalities seemed to be more of a gag than showing real depth.
NERDS LIKE IT HOT displays some flashes of the comical lightheartedness for which Vicki Lewis Thompson is well known. The premise of the book had promise, but unfortunately the story seemed too long. Perhaps a shorter format would have made NERDS LIKE IT HOT more enjoyable.

Nerds Like It Hot.......2006-09-19
When Hollywood make-up artist Gillian McCormick witnesses a murder, she turns to her old friend and former film star, Cora Bledsoe, for help. With Cora's help, Gillian is transformed from plain Jane to bombshell gorgeous. Cora also enlists the help of two dashing P.I.'s, Lex Manchester and Dante Fiorello.
With Lex and Dante also transformed, the four flee Hollywood aboard a cruise full of nerds looking for love. But, the cruise ship has more on board than just hordes of romancing nerds. It seems that trouble has followed the foursome and Lex is determined to keep Gillian safe, even if he has to go nerdy to do it!
Vicki Lewis Thompson books make me laugh. I just love her wit! While the plot of Nerds Like It Hot is outrageous, it adds to the overall charm of the book. I loved the characters and loved the boatload of nerds! Fast paced and laugh out loud funny, Nerds Like It Hot is a great escape!

Book Description
Hot movie star Zoe Tarleton gets piles of money but no respect because she always plays a beautiful bombshell. When she gets the chance to play a geeky chemist working on a formula to combine weight loss, sexual potency, and anti-aging in one powerful pill, she is determined that this role will open up her career. Zoe may be too hot to understand her character, but she has a plan: her ultimate nerd lawyer Flynn Granger can teach her the ropes. Flynn agrees to help Zoe out, but he's strictly business about it--his girlfriend is a Harvard professor and he plans to propose the next weekend. But when he sees Zoe in an outfit she considers nerdy, he realizes he's taken on an impossible task--she's just too cool to change. As they rehearse scenes in a secluded California cabin, they'll have to embrace their alter egos and fight the growing attraction between them. And they'll have to dodge an increasingly unstable stalker who wants to end their relationship....and Zoe's life. Gone WIth the Nerd is Vicki Lewis Thompson at her fun, sexy best.

Nerd Served Hot & Spicy.......2007-05-14
I absolutely adore Vicki Lewis Thompson's NERD Series. As a woman married to a man who would, in all likelihood, be described as a nerd, I know first-hand how hot these guys can be! Ms. Thompson has served up another steamy slice of nerdiness in GONE WITH THE NERD.
Zoe Tarleton is a movie star known far and wide for one thing-- playing the bombshell. With her beauty and first-class body, she's made plenty of films--but she's tired of being known as nothing more than a pretty face. Then the chance of a lifetime falls into her lap--the chance to audition for the role of Vera in an action-adventure movie, a part that could, if played right, earn her a Golden Globe. The only problem is that Vera, a chemist working on a miracle drug, is a flat-chested, bland, nerdy woman. To turn her bombshell into a dud, Zoe needs to learn how to be a nerd, and she knows the perfect person to help guide her--entertainment attorney Flynn Granger. She's spent plenty of time with Flynn over the past few years, working out contracts, and she knows he's just the man for the job.
Flynn has always been attracted to Zoe in an off-hand, it-could-never-happen sort of way. After all, she's Zoe Tarleton and he's, well, a nerdy accountant with glasses, a monochrome wardrobe, and a Honda Civic. So when Zoe suggests spending the weekend in Long Shaft, California, home of the Sasquatch, for him to advise her in nerdiness, Flynn agrees, on the condition that he can tell his almost-fiancee, Kristen, what they're up to. The only problem is, even before they reach Long Shaft, Flynn's realizing that being in close proximity with Zoe--dowdy or not--is a real danger to his libido.
GONE WITH THE NERD is an absolute riot, and Zoe and Flynn are adorable characters. The steam these two generate is enough to erupt a volcano, and the suspense and paranormal aspects thrown into the story add an exciting mix. I love how Zoe realizes that there's more to life than fame and fortune, and how Flynn comes to understand that blending into the background of life isn't necessarily the best way to go.
You won't go wrong with this nerdy tale, and I for one am eagerly anticipating the next one, Talk Nerdy to Me (The Nerd Series), coming out in February 2006.
These books are Awesome!.......2006-10-23
This was the first one in this series I read. And I now have a new favorite author.
'Nuff said!
Not My Kind of Nerd.......2006-03-22
I've been following this series and I've pretty much loved every one of the books, "Nerd in Shining Armor" and "The Nerd Who Loved Me" are both firmly tied for first place. I just don't think "Gone with the Nerd" really measures up to the rest. What really killed this book for me was Flynn. He's just not nerd enough for me. That and, I'm sorry, the fact that he's on the verge of proposing to his girlfriend yet can't hardly keep it in his pants after a scant few hours alone in a cabin with Zoe, just irks me. It's a major flaw in his character that pretty well puts me off. I don't find myself rooting for this relationship to work out because, despite the fact that he realizes he's not really in love with his girlfriend, he's basically become a cheating jerk in my eyes.
I gave it 3 stars because the writing was still there, the ending was sweet, and I kind of enjoyed the Bigfoot thing. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for "Nerds like It Hot".
From a student.......2006-03-18
I would say that I very much enjoyed this love story, Gone with the Nerd. Although this book is not short it is a nice light read. The care-free and comical topic of a movie star and class-A nerd caught up in a romance keeps this book funny and interesting. The author does a good job of making the characters seem real. Her in depth description and individual personality for each character makes them very relatable. I felt as though they were now a part of my circle of friends. Although this is not the typical romance novel it still has the appeal of one with sexy dialogue and heartwarming story line. You will find yourself laughing out loud and wanting to catch a glimpse of Flynn Granger in action, and that sparkling smile of Zoey Tarleton. Along with her blue eyes that always seem to keep Flynn guessing.
Even though I liked this book a lot there were some slight flaws. While reading, it seemed as though the beginning of the book kind of dragged on, and the ending came with some abruptness. Having said this, the main portion of the story I found very hard to put down. It has the feeling of a sexy new drama you would see on day-time T.V.
This is a great book to pick up and read in the hot days of summer with its fun and frisky tale of discovery between two people.
Could Be "Nerdier".......2005-12-30
In this installment of Vicky Lewis Thompson's "Nerd" series, a movie star-Zoe Tarleton-is paired up with token nerd, Flynn Granger, a Hollywood contract attorney.
Zoe spirits Flynn to a small town to give her nerd lessons for a role she hopes to land. When they arrive in a Bigfoot-crazed area, strange things happen. Is a blueberry cobbler supposed to foam up in the garbage disposal? And what about killer bees and crashing trees? This story promises hot romance with a thrilling hint of danger.
Promises and hints only take a reader so far. "Gone with the Nerd" gets high marks for premise, but low marks for believability. The two main characters in this book are fraught with contradictions. Zoe acts the selfish diva one minute, and is suffused with morals the next. Even in a fast-paced romance, it's hard for me to believe she falls hard for her attorney after mere hours, despite knowing him five years; and vice-versa with Flynn.
Flynn, the nerd, isn't as nerdy as one might expect. Wearing glasses does not a nerd make. As a woman married to a true nerd, I can attest that Flynn barely qualifies, especially after the book concludes. Flynn's motivations for being with Zoe are understandable for any hot-blooded male, but a nerd wouldn't handle it nearly so well. My husband agrees that Flynn would not be accepted into Club Nerd.
A reader may also be put off by how Zoe and Flynn deal with their morals considering his impending engagement to his girlfriend. Romance readers like their heroes and heroines to be heroic, but these two come up short, even if these issues are "resolved" at the end (which a romance reader expects). And if they are not behaving as they normally would outside of this weekend adventure, how can they really expect to be ready to get married after two days?
In the end, if you enjoy steamy romps that end happy, it's a decent read. However, if you are distracted by double standards and inconsistent behavior, there are many other reading choices available. C.W.

Customer Reviews:
This is a fun romp.......2006-06-04
I enjoyed this book very much. It is the first I have read by Vicki Lewis. It was recommended to me by a local book seller. I liked the silly characters and the fun little incidents. Like where the nerd gets to be like spiderman. The writing reminds me of Janet Evanovich.
Great Beach Read.......2006-05-12
Really enjoyed this book. Loved the main characters. Harry and Lainie really had a connection on the pages. Lainie's son, Dexter with Harry was so cute. Enjoyed the atmosphere of the Vegas showgirls. Harry's mother was hillarious. This is an extremely quick read. If you're looking for a light, funny, cute book this is the one for you especially just to lay in the sun.
A Fun Read.......2005-07-27
It was a fun book to read, but there were some parts I could live without.
Like other reviewers said, the sex scenes were so bland.
It's a book that never really stuck in my head.
I loved this book!.......2005-03-28
When I picked this book up and started reading, I got sucked in immediately. I had already finished 100 pages before I even realized it. It was a very fast read, with several funny parts. I ended up reading it in 2 days because I couldn't put it down. If you're looking for a light, funny, heart-warming book this is the one for you. And who wouldn't love a kid like Dexter? :)
Nerds continue their rule.......2005-03-18
Lainie Terrell is hard working single, whose son happen to be genius and who happens to work at a Las Veges Casino. Harry Ambrewster is a nononsense account who lives in the same apartment as Lainie. When Lainie starts having problems with her son's father, Lainie turns to Harry for help. What happens next is anyone guess.
"The Nerd who loved me" is the second in the series by Vicki Lewis Thompson. This book is as good as the first book in the series. As before Ms. Thompson offers up great story that will make the read laugh out loud.

bad book.......2007-04-12
I have read other books by this auther and this book was by far a big let down.
Terrible..........2006-10-30
This is a slapped together, rambling, superficial mystery, one of the worst I've read. There's little character development (some glittery details and some dispicable people, but no character developement). Each chapter focuses on a new character, more or less, most of whom have no functionality in
the forward draggy motion of the plot. There is some amusingly backbiting descriptions of the publishing world, though that's not enough to save the book. I guess it might, however, intrigue some of those immersed in the publishing world--hence the glowingly positive reviews from a few.
Whose PR dept. wrote some of the other reviews?.......2006-07-19
Anyone that has read this book needs to read these 5 star reviews and it is obvious they are connected to the author or the publishing company. This has been one of the best mystery series, and until recently, my favorite. The prior book in this series was getting a little weak. Nerds that Kill falls flat. The dialogue is canned, the last couple of chapters appear slammed together and make little sense, and overall a bit boring. I'm sorry to see this happen, but Paul Turner has clearly jumped.
Not that bad.......2005-12-28
I bought the book to be entertained and that is what I was. If you are looking for great literature then I would advise sticking with something else.
The same can be said for anyone looking for a police procedural. Afterall when Paul Turners son's sword turns out to be the murder weapon his boss should have pulled him from the investigation because of conflict of interest.
This is just an entertaining read. I basically read it in two settings and got some chuckles out of it.
The one word of criticism I have is that I had to pay a hardback price for it. Paperback would have been a better format as well as price for this.
bland and tedious mystery.......2005-09-25
I had never read a Paul Turner mystery and I doubt that I ever will read another one. This was a terrible book, tedious to read. Like many of the characters Zubro creates for this book, Zubro's writing is mildly interesting at best. Long lines of characters addressing the same issues...hardly the epitome of creativity.
