"Happy Chinese New Year!" this lovely book exuberantly proclaims. Full of extraordinary, richly colorful illustrations resembling lacquered boxes, this book is as visually delicious as Demi's previous books The Stonecutter and The Empty Pot. Children will love closely examining the flurry of activity associated with this important holiday. They will also appreciate the accompanying minimal, straightforward descriptions of everything from heavenly beings to candied coconut. As they learn the basics of this ancient holiday, they'll also enjoy finding their own animal sign of the Chinese New Year based on the year of their birth: "Each Chinese year is named after an animal, and each animal has certain characteristics. Because the moon's cycle begins again every 12 years, there are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac--one for each year of the lunar cycle." The book proceeds to romp through sections such as "Sweep and Dust," "Make a Fresh Start," "Decorate!," "Paint and Parade!," and "Cook." "Pop! Pop! Pop!" explains the importance of firecrackers in the New Year celebration. This delightful, elaborate picture book is a fine introduction to the Chinese New Year. (Ages 4 to 8)
Book Description
"In a book that is itself a celebration, Demi explains the rituals and ideas behind the Chinese New Year festival. The last 15 days of the old year are spent cleaning and preparing. On the eve of the new moon, a special feast is prepared. Each food has meaning: pork, for example, brings wealth. The first 15 days of the new year are spent celebrating with lion dances, firecrackers, and other activities. Demi's characteristic tiny, lively figures illustrate each page, with several spreads devoted to small, labeled pictures identifying things associated with the holiday, such as 14 heavenly beings. Infused with joy and filled with information, this will be a fine purchase for most libraries."--Booklist

Simply written and beautifully illustrated.......2001-01-16
This is a simply written and beautifully illustrated book about the Chinese New Year. Through delicate line drawings and jewel like colors the author/illustrator captures the essence of Chinese mythical creatures, flora, fauna, heavenly creatures and mortals. We learn about Chinese zodiac symbols, gods, how Chinese people prepare for the New Year, why they eat special kinds of foods on New Year's Day, the symbolism of specific flowers as gifts, and the meanings of Chinese characters hung on doorways. Demi is the talented author and illustrator of many children's books with Chinese themes. This book is definitely one of my favorites.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful book.......2006-08-26
This is a good book that gives practical advice on how to start or modify a walking regimen during pregnancy. I think it would mostly be useful for beginners who don't know how to start, but it does have plans for moderate and competitive exercisers who want to make sure they are not overdoing it while maintaining a higher intensity. The book reminds me a bit of DK books, with their vibrant photographs. There are some sections on strength training and stretching, and the second half of the book discusses walking during the period after the baby is born, which the authors divide into four postmesters. Overall, a good book.

Kung-Hsi Fa-Ts'Ai! Happy New Year! The Chinese New Year is all about fresh starts. Taking place during China's springtime (usually January or February in the Western calendar), celebrations include sweeping and dusting, paying off debts, catching up on homework, cooking and eating, setting off firecrackers, and dancing. Acclaimed author/illustrator Demi's delightful little ode to the Chinese New Year describes in intriguing detail each of these festivities and more. Accompanying the text are Demi's intricate and vibrant illustrations featuring Chinese children and adults participating exuberantly in each event--even mopping floors and washing hair seem like joyful occasions! We learn about the symbols behind traditional foods: "Pork brings wealth," "Sweet-and-sour fish signifies surplus," "Fried rice symbolizes harmony and plenty." And we marvel at the gorgeous dragons, lions, kites, and door guardians that dance, fly, and stand guard throughout the days of the New Year.
Demi's interest in Eastern traditional celebrations and lore are reflected in many of her other works for children: Buddha, Liang and the Magic Paintbrush, and another Chinese New Year title, Happy New Year/Kung-Hsi Fa-Ts'ai!. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

A delightful book for readers of all ages!.......2006-09-25
Over the years, I've come across several animal baby books. Some talk about the relationship between mother and baby, while others focus only on the babies. But until I came across this book, I'd never seen one quite like it.
Happy Birthday to Whooo? By Doris Fisher, is a delightful animal riddle book that includes birth announcements within the text! Each set of pages in the book focuses on a particular animal. On one side of the page, there are clever facts about the animal. On the other side of the page, there is a colorful birth announcement for the animal baby.
Fisher cleverly designed the text to provide interesting and often unknown facts about animals. For example, did you know that in the first few weeks of his or her life, a baby whale drinks, "...enough milk to gain 200 pounds every day?" The birth announcements are wittily constructed to allow children to guess the baby animal before looking at the pictures. For example, the announcement for the baby giraffe names the mother as, "Mrs. On Stilts," and gives a weight of 150 pounds and an initial height of 6 feet.
The illustrations in Happy Birthday to Whooo? by Lisa Downey, are lovely. The birth announcement pages are constructed so that the child doesn't have to guess "too" hard to figure out who the baby animal is, because various parts of the animals are sticking out behind the announcement. The pages are colorful but soothing, making this a lovely bedtime story as well as a great read-aloud story any time of the day or night.
Happy Birthday To Whooo?.......2006-09-20
Each page of this delightful book presents a riddle; can you guess what baby animal was just born? Everyone has a birthday, baby animals do too. Your child will enjoy guessing the baby animal from the clues in these announcements.
Proud parents of baby owls, lion cubs, and baby elephants include the weight, length, and number of babies in their announcement. When turning the page your child will see a colorful illustration of the described baby. Did he/she solve the riddle and guess the name of the baby animal?
Presenting The Newest Pea In Our Pod! Born: January 16, Weight 5,000 pounds, Length: 25 feet, Proud Mother: Mrs. O. Sean Blue. What is the name of this quite large baby animal? Turn the page and see a colorful illustration of a baby blue whale. Did you know he can drink enough milk to gain 200 pounds every day for the first few weeks?
Not all baby animals are delivered by the mother. The seahorse DAD gives birth to between 50 to 200 babies at a time, depending on the species. Baby kangaroos grow inside its mother's pouch; they all have the same name, Joey. By the time a baby giraffe is one year old, it stands 10 feet tall.
Parent and child will find this book entertaining as well as informative.

Book Description
In the not-too-distant future, food industry giants and mega pharmaceutical companies unite, creating a bizarre and powerful alliance: The Deli-ceutical industry. Promoting pancake mix and anti-psychotic pills to a drug-hungry public takes a special kind of company and a slightly off-centered group of individuals to bring these unique products to market: a drug-crazed president who openly declares himself the first trisexual; the ghost of a depressed, mass murderer advertising executive; the son of Satan; dwarfs dressed in cowgirl outfits; a syphilis-riddled Nazi informer; and a pair of intoxicated cannibals. Happy New Year, Conrad Buddy is the ultimate dark comedy about the dangers of exploring uncharted business territories while having the misfortune of being led by a serotonin-depleted Moe, Larry and Curly.

Through a glass (of Draino) darkly.......2007-08-07
Disturbing and funny. A spook-house ride through a dark imagination. Equal parts Vonnegut, George Saunders and Woody Allen, this poison-pen letter to the healthcare advertising industry rants and rages in uproarious fashion. Laughter and horror are on equal display, as are reality and insanity. A book for our times.
Insanity in advertising.......2007-03-01
Laugh out Loud funny. Shows the crazy side of advertising, there's clearly lot more to it than you think, add voodoo, drugs and human "sacrifice". Delightfully colorful characters that I just loved. I didn't want it to end.
Joseph Heller meets Carl Hiaasen.......2007-02-27
Books seldom cause me to laugh out loud but this one had me doing it regularly. It's packed full of bizarre characters that we've all had the pleasure (or displeasure) of meeting in our business or personal lives and it really skewers big business and advertising in particular.
Book Description
Original compilation of 11 stories by a master storyteller brilliantly captures the joy, drudgery, trials and tribulations of Jewish life. Includes "Geese," "At the Doctor's," "Three Widows," "The Passover Eve Vagabonds," "On America," "The Ruined Passover," and 5 others. A delight for devotees of Aleichem and anyone interested in Jewish cultural life.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful gift item.......2001-01-30
This inexpensive Dover book is a charming English compilation of eleven of Aleichem's tales. The majority are written in a first person stream-of-consciousness narrative and you definitely get the impression that someone is sitting in front of you talking your ear off! Peppered with cadence, I'm sure the tales are even better in Yiddish, but this is a wonderful look into Aleichem's true talent - showing the pain and humor that was part of the Jewish experience for hundreds of years.
Book Description
