Customer Reviews:
Fruits Basket 16.......2007-06-19
I totally cried as I read this, the story of Tohru's parents is devastatingly adorable and romantic, but the eventual ending is enough to rip your heart out. But as always, Natsuki Takaya-sensei has composed a new chapter in Tohru's story that keeps you turning the pages.
Takaya shoots for the stars, but ends up making a mark on the moon!!!.......2007-06-05
I loved this book, and how it was so dramatic, from a romantic story, to a tragedy. Takaya did very well. I enjoyed the twist with Kyo meeting Kyoko. I could not put the book down. I cannot wait for the next book to come out.
Sugoku tanoshii wa yo........2007-06-05
I own this series in Japanese, and it is a wonderful read! It has all the important elements of a good shoujo manga: it is romantic, twisted, with a shoujo (in the traditional meaning of the word) involved in finding a new family and love triangles galore. It is just a very fun read, no matter the language!
Beautiful and Tragic, Interesting and Compelling.......2007-04-18
Kyoko's story is revealed in this book, and it's well-written and beautiful, yet also very saddening. It was also extremely interesting to finally meet Tohru's father - who is nothing like what we imagined he might be!
Also, we learn a little about Machi of the student council - and it turns out she's very interesting indeed! I'm getting really attached to her character, and I think a lot of the "quiet, good-grades, no social-life" kids out there can really identify with the poor girl and her situation. I hope there's even more of her in future books.
The story behind Kyoko.......2007-04-13
The stories behind Yuki's mysterious classmate and Tohru's idolized mother come to light in the sixteenth volume of "Fruits Basket." It's a rather sorrowful volume that shows off Natsuki Takaya's skills with messed-up people finding meaning in their lives, but she throws in some humor at the end.
Kyo looks back on his meeting some time ago with Tohru's mother, who told him her life story: her parents only cared for how she made them look, so she became a brutal, angry gang leader known as the Red Butterfly. But then she met a sweet, caring young student teacher named Katsuya Honda, and slowly fell in love with him.
When she failed to get into high school because of a savage beating, her parents disowned her -- and Katsuya proposed. Their life was full of happiness and love, especially when their daughter was born -- until Katsuya died unexpectedly. Overcoming his loss, and finding something to live for, was the greatest challenge that Kyoko ever dealt with.
On a school trip, the mysterious Machi shows another side of her personality to Yuki, and faces up to her growing feelings for the "Prince." And at the New Year's banquet, tensions are riding high when Hatori faces up to an old debt, and Yuki enrages Akito to violence. And finally, Momiji has an unusual New Year's present for Kureno...
As with many of the "Fruits Basket" volumes, Takaya gets your tears pouring, only to cheer you up with some comedy and healed wounds by the end of the story -- and along the way, she tells of a true love story against all the ods, which ended far sooner than it should have.
The first story is the darkest, especially since you know there can't be any happy ending for Katsuya and Kyoko, but the final one has a balance of darkness (Akito going berserk) and deliciously kooky moments; The scene where Ayame carries off Yuki, screaming that they vowed to die together by the Seine is priceless.
And Takaya's artwork only emphasizes the strength of her writing -- she brings scenes like Kyoko's crying fit and violent past or Kyo's bloodstained nightmare to life, in more detail than ever before. But there are some charming scenes too, such as baby Tohru, or the sight of Haru kissing a sleeping Rin.
Kyoko's not the only one whose past is revealed here -- we also get to see glimpses of how Machi became the quiet, introverted person she is, compared to her outgoing brother. But the regulars get some development as well: Yuki has obviously grown stronger and dmore confident, while Kyo's sense of guilt runs a lot deeper than anyone suspects.
The sixteenth volume of "Fruits Basket" is unusually dark, but is a brilliant exploration of the characters' pasts -- and the grief, hope and love that come with them. And it promises to get better.

Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics was published in 1993, just as "Comics Aren't Just for Kids Anymore!" articles were starting to appear and graphic novels were making their way into the mainstream, and it quickly gave the newly respectable medium the theoretical and practical manifesto it needed. With his clear-eyed and approachable analysis--done using the same comics tools he was describing--McCloud quickly gave "sequential art" a language to understand itself. McCloud made the simplest of drawing decisions seem deep with artistic potential.
Thirteen years later, following the Internet evangelizing of Reinventing Comics, McCloud has returned with Making Comics.
Designed as a craftsperson's overview of the drawing and storytelling decisions and possibilities available to comics artists, covering everything from facial expressions and page layout to the choice of tools and story construction, Making Comics, like its predecessors, is also an eye-opening trip behind the scenes of art-making, fascinating for anyone reading comics as well as those making them. Get a sense of the range of his lessons by clicking through to the opening pages of his book, including his (illustrated, of course) table of contents (warning: large file, recommended for high-bandwidth users):
Book Description
Scott McCloud tore down the wall between high and low culture in 1993 with Understanding Comics, a massive comic book about comics, linking the medium to such diverse fields as media theory, movie criticism, and web design. In Reinventing Comics, McCloud took this to the next level, charting twelve different revolutions in how comics are generated, read, and perceived today. Now, in Making Comics, McCloud focuses his analysis on the art form itself, exploring the creation of comics, from the broadest principles to the sharpest details (like how to accentuate a character's facial muscles in order to form the emotion of disgust rather than the emotion of surprise.) And he does all of it in his inimitable voice and through his cartoon stand–in narrator, mixing dry humor and legitimate instruction. McCloud shows his reader how to master the human condition through word and image in a brilliantly minimalistic way. Comic book devotees as well as the most uninitiated will marvel at this journey into a once–underappreciated art form.
Customer Reviews:
Fun to read and very informative.......2007-08-25
I read Understanding Comics and liked it so much I decided to check this book out as well, and found it to be even more enjoyable. McCloud's artwork is very fun and whimsical, his writing is humorous and he puts many concepts about the writing and drawing of comics in very easy-to-understand language. I never thought about making comics before, but this volume was so inspiring I'm convinced it might be fun to try!
A Great Learning Tool.......2007-08-15
If you've ever wondered about the finer points of crafting a comic this is the book for you. This is not a how to draw book and if thats what you are looking for than this isn't for you. It IS a very intelligent and thought provoking insight into the story telling aspects of the creation of comics. This is a MUST HAVE for anyone serious about comics.
Scott McCloud is the Alton Brown of Comics.......2007-08-07
Alton Brown is not a world-class chef but 'Good Eats' is indispensible educational television. It's the same thing with Scott McCloud, reviewers who say he hasn't produced anything earth shaking in the comics medium are missing the point. Making Comics is a wide-ranging, free-wheeling and passionate examination of what makes comics (and much visual art) tick, and provides a toolbox we can use to create our own stories. This is the best thing since Understanding Comics and goes more into the details of visual storytelling, the chapter on facial expressions alone is worth the price of admission. I want to send this book to Edward Tufte. Anyone interested in visual communication needs to read this book, and that goes double for aspiring comics creators.
Must-Have for Aspiring Artists.......2007-07-05
You need to own Understanding Comics to accompany this one. Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art
Making Comics is a complete book that refers to many of the topics that Understanding Comics expands upon. It is a great starting point for aspiring artists to look at approaching their own comic. McCloud explains the mutlitude of styles involved and how each of them works to engage the reader. He is truly a master of his craft.
He strips away the layers of superhero masculine fantasy to reveal comics as a storytelling vehicle. Not your typical how-to-draw book.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-07-28
I think this book well summarizes everything I like about the series to date, it has good action scenes, good interactions, and a bit of dark humor.
I disagree with an earlier reviewer, I am glad that Dark Horse is now translating the sound effects - I also like the fact that they're not just ham-handedly trying to convert it into English equivalents there are some things for which it just doesn't work. (The 'sound' of something being noticed, for example).
If you want a dark and engaging read there is nothing out there better than Berserk.......2007-06-11
Miura continues his opus with this 16th volume and shows the same skill and beauty in his art as he always does. His work is perfect.
I do wish that Dark Horse had opted not to translate the sound effects, Miura's art is all the description the reader needs.
More of the same.......2007-05-26
I am so happy that the mist valley stuff is over now. the action and art is still awesome, just what you've come to expect from Miura. I was just not into this story though. the elves and what not... just didn't do it for me.
The Beast of Darkness.......2007-05-13
I especially liked this book for a few reasons. One reason is it has an excellent quote by Guts, ".. look at the darkness around me.", once you've read that part you'll know what I mean. Secondly, we can see the dark side of Guts continue to grow with "The Beast of Darkness". Lastly, the action is intense and superbly drawn by Miura. Guts' unquenchable thirst for revenge really shows here...
Book Description
For high-schooler Yoko Nakajima, life has been fairly ordinary--that is until Keiki, a young man with golden hair, tells Yoko they must return to their kingdom. Once confronted by this mysterious being and whisked away to an unearthly realm, Yoko is left with only a magical sword; a gem; and a million questions about her destiny, the world she's trapped in, and the world she desperately wants to return to.More than just a fantasy story filled with horrific monsters, half-beasts, and magicians, The Twelve Kingdoms centers around a world reminiscent of Chinese mythology and rife with civil and political upheaval. Sea of Shadow, the first volume of this ongoing seven-volume epic, takes you on a wild ride that leaves you questioning the bounds of reality and fantasy."An exciting, fast-paced adventure that will keep readers on the edge of their seats."--BookLoons.com "This is a fantasy novel displaying a grand imagination and soaring adventure."--ActiveAnime.com"Fuyumi Ono weaves a bewitching tale of strength in adversity, bravery despite fear, courage above all, and trust â" in yourself and in others."--Yabookscentral.comFuyumi Ono was born in Oita Prefecture, Japan. She graduated from Otani University with a major in Buddhist studies. During college she was a member of Kyoto Universityâs mystery story club for readers and writers of the mystery genre. In 1988, she made her publishing debut in Kodanshaâs teen-targeted X-Bunko Teens Heart series. Besides The Twelve Kingdoms, Ono has written other novels in such genres as mystery and horror.
Customer Reviews:
Astonishingly good.......2007-06-25
I couldn't put this book down. I stayed up all night to finish it, and went to work the next morning like a zombie. The story is extremely well-written and the translation is handled perfectly. I did not expect the character development to be so in-depth--this book is a must-read for both children and adults. I can't wait for Book 2 to come out!
A fun read..........2007-06-19
I enjoyed the anime series and since it's based on novels instead of manga I figured I'd read them. The book takes you deep into the world of the twelve kingdoms, and also into the mind of the heroine, Yoko, who is dealing with her own faults while trying to survive in an unfamiliar and hostile world. The author's descriptions give a vivid account of what it's like to be Yoko by mentioning "other senses" type of details, by which I mean senses other than sight. We hear about sounds, smells, and most importantly how things feel. The story is rich and complicated, but not so much that one can't put things together. I enjoyed this book, and anyone who is a fan of anime or manga would probably like it as well.
Good ending, lukewarm beginning and middle.......2007-06-12
I wish there were half-stars on Amazon, because my actual rating for this book would be a three and a half. For most of the book (i.e. the beginning and middle), my reaction was merely that it was okay. I had liked the premise for the book, which was why I bought it, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations as I began to read. After the initial set-up, I felt like the same things kept happening over and over again: Yoko fights demons, almost dies, gets help from strangers, and then the cycle repeats. There are also long periods of reflection, both in Yoko's mind and in conversation with "herself" (the blue monkey), which always seemed too similar to one another as well; there wasn't much progression until the final conversation. The whole idea of the "good girl" and Yoko's eventual lack of trust didn't feel natural too me~it was as though I could see the author pulling the strings, purposely feeding me information to get me to believe these character traits that just didn't seem to develop properly.
Don't get me wrong, though~there were quite a few things about the book I did enjoy, especially the ending. While much of the book gave me a humdrum feeling, by the time I closed the book I was left with the impression that I actually liked it. I am now even looking forward to the next volume. In short, the ending saved this book for me, which is why I wish I could give it three and a half stars instead of three. There were also other enjoyable points/ideas as well: I especially liked the concepts of beastlings, egg fruit, and the various other demons in the story, among other things. I just wish I was able to like all of the book, not just parts.
Outstanding !.......2007-06-09
I have seen the Anime version and was very pleased that the book is so different. I cannot wait untill the next book is released.
Beautiful Read.......2007-06-02
This book was a joy for me to read, plain and simple. I am an avid anime and manga fan, and I was intrigued by this book, simply because I had heard a friend mention the 12 Kingdoms anime long ago. I was surprised and delighted to find this book was worth far more than I paid. The book is very well written and I had trouble putting it down. The story is captivation and keeps you guessing, weaving a very surprising and I enjoyed it, just when you think you finally start to understand, you are taken in a whole new direction. The world put forth in this book seems limitless, and the characters, most notably Yoko, grow in such a fantastic way it's hard to put into words. I am very pleased and recommend this to anyone who has a hint of imagination, a taste for adventure and a love for the unknown

Customer Reviews:
Too Short.......2007-09-29
Well, as usual, this book was written masterfully, and I would expect nothing less from the Erin Hunters. The artistry was amazing, but it was just too short. I finished it in under half an hour, which is just not like any of the other books. All in al, though, this book was pretty good.
comic book style .......2007-09-26
My two boys (ages 11 and 8) LOVE the Warriors series. However, this particular book is written in comic book style and they read it in less than an hour. They liked it, but it wasn't what we expected.
Warriors Manga?.......2007-08-23
I tell you, this was interesting. It was very good though. Graystripe was one of my favorite characters, and I was so disappointed when he left. I'm glad they're addressing that. I'm not sure about the manga, which makes the cats look odd. But I guess since I'm not much of a artist myself I can't say anything. This isn't a must-read, but it's quick, easy, and fast-paced.
The Lost Warrior: Graystripe In Twolegplace .......2007-08-01
As anyone who's read Dawn knows, Graystripe was captured by Twolegs when rescuing cats from their traps. This manga follows his adventure in Twolegplace and his desperate attempts to escape...and what happens when he meets Millie, a kittypet in the same Twolegplace.
The Lost Warrior is good...just not spectacular. They could have made the story a lot longer and made a better, more detailed manga.
Now for the storyline. It's good. But... a little boring. And short. Graystripe wants to get out of Twolegplace but seems to have given up hope. He's seemingly lost all his warrior instincts, and after (spoilers begin here) losing a fight with a kittypet, Graystripe begins to believe he'll never get out of there.
Then he meets Millie, another kittypet. Fascinated by the forest life, she wants to be taught how to fight and hunt, and Graystripe meets her demands. Slowly, his warrior instincts begin to return, though Graystripe still has little hope. Eventually Silverstream convinces Graystripe to look for the Clans, and he goes, though he meets obstacles along the way. (spoilers end here)
So it's good. But not totally awesome, and the plot could have been expanded a lot more. I HAVE flipped through it again and still enjoyed it, but don't expect the most amazing book in the world...it pales much in comparison to the regular Warriors.
So this book is worth buying, just don't walk into the bookstore expecting the best manga there is to read. If you do, you may be a bit disappointed.

I bought this for a niece ( 9yrs ) and she loved it, of course she had already read every other book in this series and loved all of those as well.

Finally, everything comes to a head. Rukia's execution is at hand, and while Ichigo has healed somewhat, he's nowhere near full power, but there's no one else left to save her. Is there any hope left? Another fine installment in an excellent series. ****

The moment is at hand. This series just keeps upping the ante. Rukia is about to be executed, Ichigo is still mastering Bankai. Renji is in all out combat with Byakuya, soul reapers and hacking each other up left and right and this is just the beginning of the volume! On top of this we still don't know why Captain Aizen was really killed or what Captain Ichimaru is up to. By the end of this volume there will be even more intense combat. The ridiculously powerful Ichigo will appear and the Captain-General will enter the fight to put the fear of god in anyone who stands in his way. The Soul Society is completely split in half as what can best be described as civil war breaks out! Whew!
Argh the suspense.......2007-05-13
this is a great series. In this book you get the idea that there is something more to what is actually happening...something behind the scenes. You get a glimpse but you are not quite sure, it's right around the corner

It is just a very fun read, no matter the language!
all fruit baskets.......2006-12-26

My daughter loves this book.......2006-02-19
I purchased this book and two others in the series for my 12 year-old daughter after she received the first volume as a Christmas present. She absolutely loves them all.
what a fun series!.......2006-01-06
i just started getting into fruits basket and i love it! i also have the anime series. now i am wanting to read the manga. the manga has a lot more that the anime doesn't have but it's still very good. i definitely recommend it.
wonderful!!!.......2005-10-13
Kyo protects Tohru at school with a move that is decidedly affectionate. It is the first day and Haru and Momitchi are now attending along with the other Sohma's. Haru immediately gets harassed because of the color of his hair and has to prove that it is the natural hair color. Then a bomb is dropped, Akito is there, and he has already encountered Tohru. When Yuki finds them the fear that he displays concerns Tohru, who later plans a badminton game with everyone to cheer him up.
Another member of the zodiac is introduced, this time it's Yuki's older brother Ayami. Ayami is quite charming and handsome, and whisks Tohru off to dinner to talk about the distance between him and Yuki. Later Momitchi tells Tohru of his sad past with his mother and younger sister, apparently his mom had to have her memories erased because she had rejected him. This fact saddens Tohru, who had such a great relationship with her mother before she died.
Tohru and everyone go to her mother's grave to commemorate the one year anniversary of her death. The happiness between Tohru and her friends on this sad day surprise Kyo and Yuki. Kyo begins to realize that a warm feeling to Tohru is gathering in his heart.
Again...I am hopelessly addicted. I'm going to stop telling people to read this anymore. If you have read all of my other reviews of the manga so far, you already know how much I love it. Go read it for yourself. It's wonderful.

Kingdom Hearts Boxed Set.......2007-05-21
This is a great set! I think anyone who likes disney or played the Kingdom Hearts game would enjoy these books. I definately recommend it to anyone who is thinking about buying it! I bought these for my [...] daughter who doesn't normally like to read but these she actually asks to keep reading! I think that's the best review I can think of!
Fun books for the child who likes Kingdom Hearts.......2007-05-13
My kids were already big fans of Kingdom Hearts so these easy to read books were right up their alley. The books are comic book style so there are plenty of pictures for them to look at and keep them entertained.
my child loves this!.......2007-04-19
my child loves kingdom hearts and always want this. we already order =D
No Bookmark or Poster?.......2007-03-21
My son was very excited to get this set of books. However, the bookmark and poster that were promised in the ad didn't come with it. Very disappointing - Amazon is usually great about this stuff. I'm not returning it because I'd have to pry them from my son's hands...but sad, sad that they ripped off a child.
Kingdom Hearts ... what more do you want?.......2007-02-13
Ok firstly this comic book is based on the popular PS2 video game Kingdom Hearts, now that we got that out of the way, that's what it is. KINGDOM HEARTS, no more no less. I personally didn't find any extra cookies conserning the which I must admit is one of the reasons that I bought this comic. All in here can be found in Kingdom Hearts or in Kingdom Hearts II, from slightly more insight on the Ansem's Report is all I got out of this, but none the less a great experience once again. If you love the game and become an aficionado like myself a recomentdation is all I can give you get this manga.
Secondly this manga is preety childish, even excluding the fact that it is partly based on Disney stories, still pretty kiddy. Nicely said by the rating A for all ages. so if you are an aficionado of Kindom Hearts and didn't think that you are too manly for the game then you are not too manly for the manga trust me. KINGDOM HEARTS COMPACT TO FOR READING PLEASURE

Naruto Volume 13.......2007-05-02
Naruto issue 13 is a good issue that Masashi Kishimoto has ever published so far. This issue is a good issue becuase this is the episode when Gara and Sasuke Uchiha fight it out in the 3rd exam. I like this issue because this is when Sasuke reveals the power of the Chidori: 1000 Birds. This move was used on gara when he was trying to do a jutsu that Sasuke sis not wont gara to do. While all of this was going on the other Hogage that was accompaning the 3rd Hokage took him hastage and he turned out to be the on the only Oruchumaru!!!
Great chapter to a great series.......2007-04-06
Naruto vol. 13 is a great addition to the naruto series.it provides a great story while keeping u entertained.
Very Exciting.......2007-03-31
The story arc for the chunin exams ends during this book and begins something that is all the better. I love the story so far and this adds to the excitement. Too bad it will take until June for the 14th volume to come out. I give this two thumbs up and recommend this to those that love Naruto.
Absolutely the BEST MANGA EVER!!.......2007-03-31
This is the number-one best manga series in the entire world! I sometimes think Kishimoto-sensei is taking the tragedy-part of the story too far, like with the Third Hokage's death; hat was very sad. Anyways, it's a great series!
Best of the battles.......2007-03-30
I liked this one better than the others because you got to see Orochimaru's attak. Temari wins the fight against Shikamaru in a stunning way. Before Sasuke and Gaara's fight, Sasuke appears with a flashy enterance, casually late. They find the amazing story of the chidori, or lightning blade, as Sasuke unleashes it. As Gaara trys to transform he gets hit with the chidori. During the fight, the sand ninja and Orochimaru attack Konoha, and the Chunin selection exams concludes with a bang. As Sasuke is pursuing Gaara, Temari, and Kankuro, Shikamaru, Sakura, and Naruto, with the help of Pakkun, are pursuing Sasuke
Customer Reviews:
Not worth the money or time it took to read.......2007-04-24
Where to begin...If you can get past one of the main characters taking advantage of the other one by lying and saying they slept together, as well as their coworkers being aware of the deception and just letting it play out rather than intervene, then maybe you'll like this book. But chances are you'll expect some kind of transformation from the characters, which doesn't seem to happen until maybe the end of the book. The book supposedly spans a year of the characters dating, yet the main character still can't come to grips with the fact that he's attracted to a guy? And it takes the whole book for them to do the deed? Sorry if there were too many spoilers, but if the plot's absurd that there should at least be some hot and heavy action. Sadly, this book didn't deliver. Try Close the Last Door and skip this one.
Engaging and enjoyable! Think Fake!.......2007-04-01
This soft core Yaoi traces the relationship development between 2 police officers. Sounds like Fake ? Definitely but on the love and without the police actions and it is not a series. The story consists of 9 chapters, the title of each chapter aptly describing its contents in 3 words. Alcohol, Shirt and Kiss is the first chapter's title and these same 3 words are just how it all started for Naru and Kita. The plot focusing on their relationship is engaging, at times hilarious, sometimes disarmingly sweet and those of us into romance certainly appreciate the emotions build-up. The side characters of their 3 police colleagues are quite solid, each one having his/her said in the 2 guys' relationship, which add to the fun. As for the couple, they are very likable. Naru is the endearing uke who gradually becomes more demanding and Kita the cool seme does have a vulnerable side which balances their relationship and makes it more realistic. The artwork is decent and the caricartures certainly add to the enjoyment of the story. A very good read indeed.
