5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-10-02

I love this series immensely. The characters are believable and fun. Kim Harrison knows how to write a story. I've love all of her previous books and this one is no different. The plot is intense. It's the kind of book you can't put down. I love how Rachel is portrayed. I look foward to the next ones!

5 out of 5 stars OMGOSH! Amazing!.......2007-09-17

Everytime I think a book cant get any better i get shocked and this book was awesome!! I love Rachel although im a HUGE fan of IVEY! she rocks. I love how this book plays out i think its the best in the series so far!

5 out of 5 stars She is getting better and better.......2007-09-17

Ms Harrison is getting better with each installation. Can't wait for her next book!. The addition of a "few more demons" was brilliant and diversified the storyline nicely.

5 out of 5 stars For a Few Demons More.......2007-09-05

This entire series rocks!!! Pick them up and you can't put them down. The cast of characters are memorable and believable. I had given up on urban fantasy, Laurel K Hamilton will do that to you. (that's called fair warning folks)

However Kim Harrison saved the day. I have all the Rachel Morgan books and have my calender marked as to when I can get the next one coming out. The plots MOVE.. and in unexpected ways at times. While relationships are there, Ms. Harrison doesn't let it become the whole story (thank the goddess for that!)

This books are a must read for all urban fantasy fans!!

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recomended.......2007-08-23

I think this book is the best in the series so far. It seems like Kim Harrison books just get better and better. I love this series and I'm waiting feverishly for the next one. If the rest of the books in her series are any indication, then the next book will be even better than this one. I really liked this book because of the brilliant mix of humor, horror, fantasy, and characters that are so well described I feel like I know them. I've never read an author who could shock me, scare me, then make me laugh out loud so many times in the same book. Trust me, this one is worth several all-nighters.

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, J.K. Rowling offers up equal parts danger and delight--and any number of dragons, house-elves, and death-defying challenges. Now 14, her orphan hero has only two more weeks with his Muggle relatives before returning to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Yet one night a vision harrowing enough to make his lightning-bolt-shaped scar burn has Harry on edge and contacting his godfather-in-hiding, Sirius Black. Happily, the prospect of attending the season's premier sporting event, the Quidditch World Cup, is enough to make Harry momentarily forget that Lord Voldemort and his sinister familiars--the Death Eaters--are out for murder.

Readers, we will cast a giant invisibility cloak over any more plot and reveal only that You-Know-Who is very much after Harry and that this year there will be no Quidditch matches between Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. Instead, Hogwarts will vie with two other magicians' schools, the stylish Beauxbatons and the icy Durmstrang, in a Triwizard Tournament. Those chosen to compete will undergo three supreme tests. Could Harry be one of the lucky contenders?

But Quidditch buffs need not go into mourning: we get our share of this great game at the World Cup. Attempting to go incognito as Muggles, 100,000 witches and wizards converge on a "nice deserted moor." As ever, Rowling magicks up the details that make her world so vivid, and so comic. Several spectators' tents, for instance, are entirely unquotidian. One is a minipalace, complete with live peacocks; another has three floors and multiple turrets. And the sports paraphernalia on offer includes rosettes "squealing the names of the players" as well as "tiny models of Firebolts that really flew, and collectible figures of famous players, which strolled across the palm of your hand, preening themselves." Needless to say, the two teams are decidedly different, down to their mascots. Bulgaria is supported by the beautiful veela, who instantly enchant everyone--including Ireland's supporters--over to their side. Until, that is, thousands of tiny cheerleaders engage in some pyrotechnics of their own: "The leprechauns had risen into the air again, and this time, they formed a giant hand, which was making a very rude sign indeed at the veela across the field."

Long before her fourth installment appeared, Rowling warned that it would be darker, and it's true that every exhilaration is equaled by a moment that has us fearing for Harry's life, the book's emotions running as deep as its dangers. Along the way, though, she conjures up such new characters as Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, a Dark Wizard catcher who may or may not be getting paranoid in his old age, and Rita Skeeter, who beetles around Hogwarts in search of stories. (This Daily Prophet scoop artist has a Quick-Quotes Quill that turns even the most innocent assertion into tabloid innuendo.) And at her bedazzling close, Rowling leaves several plot strands open, awaiting book 5. This fan is ready to wager that the author herself is part veela--her pen her wand, her commitment to her world complete. (Ages 9 and older) --Kerry Fried

5 out of 5 stars Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.......2007-09-30

What can one say? Rowlings continues with her wonderful story, keeping her characters constantly endearing. The adventures continue and no matter what your age you will be caught up in the excitement and magic as Harry learns more about his background, his strengths and his weaknesses.

If you have not read Harry Potter at all, then you must start with the first book and read all seven of them, you will be transported out of this world and into one that will bind you as magically as it has bound me

4 out of 5 stars Going Strong.......2007-09-24

The fourth Harry Potter is significantly darker than the first three. harrys is growing up, and is about to face some difficult challenges. Unlike the first three books, the fourth Harry starts not with Harry's departure to Hogwarts, but with a Quidditch tournament, during which some dark misteries are unveiled, misteries which are signs of the things to come.

The Quidditch tournament, another year at Hogwarts and a Triwizard tournament are the highlights. Harry comes face to face with his arch-enemy Voldemort, which is bound to split the wizarding world.

Though beautifully and expertly written, the fourth Harry Potter is just a tad too long, with descriptions that are more detailed and lengthy (sometimes unnecessarily so) than usual. Still, the fourth Harry is just as gripping as the first three, and keeps the reader wanting for more. And fortunately there is more. Order of Phoenix, here I come!

3 out of 5 stars A Catholic homeschool father's perspective.......2007-09-17

It took four books, but Voldemort, the most powerful of the dark wizards, is back. And his minions, the Death Eaters, couldn't be happier. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire tells the tale of how it happened--in about 750 pages. As with the previous novels in the series, the prose is generally crisp, the dialog is occasionally goofy, and the characters are wonderfully well drawn. Though quite a long book, the plot is tight, amusing and keeps you guessing. My only major criticism of the book as literary work regards the ending. As heroes go, Harry's main virtue in these final confrontations always seems to be dumb luck. Voldemort is a bit of a bungling super-villain for whom there's always an element of, "Oops, forgot about that." And not once but twice there were "Tuco" moments where the villain insists on lecturing the hero before doing away with him. "When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk." While I suppose these types of scenes aren't quite as trite for young readers who haven't seen them done over and over in dozens of books, TV shows, and movies, for me they were something of a let-down.

On the plus side, this was the first book in the series so far that made me laugh out loud a few times. Something about Hermione's idealistic but naive obsession with her Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare struck me as highly amusing. I suppose it was Ron's insistence on calling the organization "spew" that did it.

This was also the darkest book in the series so far. In it we are finally given a more concrete idea of what constitutes "dark" magic. Dark wizards apparently use the three "unforgivable curses"--the imperius curse, which causes the victim to do the spell-caster's bidding, the cruciatus curse which causes the victim horrible pain, and Avada Kedavra, the killing curse. Now this last one looked so much like the "abracadabra", the all purpose Vaudeville magician word, that I went out and looked it up. It seems that J. K. Rowling herself said that it is an Aramaic spell meaning "let the thing be destroyed." Now why she chose to use Aramaic--the language of Christ--for this worst of all spells, and not Latin like she did for all the rest is beyond me.

Of course, it should be mentioned that Rowling's distinction between good magic and "dark magic" has never been accepted by the Catholic Church as Fr. Amorth, the famous exorcist, has repeatedly pointed out. That said, to this point in the series, all of the "good magic" has been of the comic-book variety--turning people into ferrets or making someone's nose grow tentacles. The "dark magic" is used exclusively by characters who are unmistakably evil.

One interesting little tid-bit in Goblet of Fire that may be thrown into the Christian-vs.-occult-influence debate happens at the Yule Ball. Up to this point, Christmas and Easter at Hogwarts have been mentioned at least in passing in every book. However, while the British are ever so much less stupid about actually calling the holidays by their proper names (unlike some in the U.S. who insist on calling them "Winter/Spring Break" or attempt to replace them with made-up PC holidays from the 1960s), Christmas and Easter have nonetheless lost almost all religious meaning to most Britons. And thus it has been at Hogwarts--Christmas in the first three books has been all about feasting, decorating, and getting presents. But for a split second in Goblet of Fire, Rowling has suits of armor singing, "O Come All Ye Faithful" (page 395). Given all the secular "holiday" tunes she could have inserted there, that she chose an unmistakably Christian one could be telling. Admittedly, it could also be complete coincidence.

Finally, the aspect of Goblet of Fire that I most appreciated was the introduction of the slimy, ethics-free journalist, Rita Skeeter. This character was such an on-target parody of a gossip reporter that you just know that J. K. Rowling was taking some shots at the media. That Ms. Skeeter worked hand-in-glove with the "Ministry of Magic"--a government agency populated with petty bureaucrats and place-seeking brown-noses--made the parody that much more on-the-nose.

Over all, as a work of fantasy fiction that has been marketed with young readers in mind, I found Goblet of Fire to be quite a foreboding read. The scene at the end where Wormtail mixes a potion in a graveyard for which the vital ingredients are a bone from Voldemort's father, some of Harry's blood, and Wormtail's own hand--which he, himself, promptly slices off--was border-line demonic. And for a book with so much discussion of death, I found it more than a little disconcerting that it lacked any notion of Judeo-Christian eschatology. So again, I will refrain from endorsing this book or the series as a whole as in any way suitable for younger Catholic readers until I see where all this is going.

3 out of 5 stars Very long.............2007-09-15

Finally finished fourth book. Started reading these books last week. My son kept telling me how good they were. He's got 3 kids of his own but will stand in line half the night to get a first edition.

I liked the first and third books, but not the 2nd as much. I have the four movies, so after I finished each book, I watched the movie. Unfortunately i didn't think the 3rd movie was as good as the book. I missed the Quiddich matches, as they are my favorite scenes.

But book four was a bit too much. So many characters, constantly changing who they were and what they were. And 700+ pages is quite a lot. It's a heavy book and and I have it in paper back. Hard to hold. Towards the end, I was really confused as to who was who, who was good, who was bad, etc. I'm glad I had the film. It helped even though some of the characters were missing. Unfortunately the fourth film didn't show the opening Quiddich match either.

Still, I guess I'll plod on to book 5. It's even heavier than 4. My only last remark is I don't see how young kids can possibly get through these books. The language is really for much older children than 10, probably young adults, and I had to print out a dictionary from the Internet to keep track of all the Hogwart names. Seventy some pages of names! That's quite a lot.

5 out of 5 stars The plot thickens....and darkens..........2007-09-11

Gobblet of Fire, the fourth book in the Harry Potter series, is another charmer. Old characters come back, and many new ones enter, as the general feel of the series begins to grow darker. Harry dreams of Voldemort, killing a muggle, and speaking with Wormtail and another man who he dosn't know, about Harry. Then we are whisked off to the Quiditch World Cup, where the celebration after the match turns to sinister and dangerous. The Death Eaters, the old followers of Voldemort, come out of the shadows and begin to wreak havock that night after the event, and someone conjurs up the Dark Mark, Voldimort's mark, apparently with Harry's wand!

Once the school year begins excitement begins to build within Hogwarts, as this year the school will be the sight for legendary Tri Wizard Tournement, which has not been held in many long years. Who will be selected as the champion for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? What is the mission that Voldemort gave to this mysterious stranger in Harry's dream? And what about the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, 'Mad-Eye' Moody? This is another MUST READ by Rowling.

3 out of 5 stars Enigmas, akimbo, and snares, Oh My!.......2007-09-28

I liked the book because of its originality.
However, the story would flow and then get stuck in its attempt to confuse and irritate the reader into skipping over big parts of the book.
The journey of the Witch is so convoluted, that I had to back track. Enjoying this book took a lot effort. I like to be entertained when I read fiction, not work myself into a dither trying to understand where the story is going. When it gets bogged down with theories and who is who and where and when,...it is rather boring. BUT.. the parts that tell you about her childhood, schooling...is entertaining.

1 out of 5 stars Horrors! Horrors!.......2007-09-23

This book was painfully disappointing. The plots meanders here and there and never fully develops. The writing is mediocre, and the book left me feeling cheated. The books sums itself up with the only funny line in it - "Horrors! Horrors!" Don't waste your time!

5 out of 5 stars ONe of my favorites.......2007-09-21

For anyone who likes a little fantasy in your life this is a great book. What an interesting tale of an old classic.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked is "wicked".......2007-09-20

I am not sure how this story works into a musical, but I'm sure I will be going to see the stage production of this interesting tale. Narrated to perfection, you won't want to stop listening to this story. This set of 16 CDs will keep you glued to your player. I enjoyed the story on my solo roadtrip and throughout the rest of the summer. You probably won't want to purchase this set for family listening, however, because some of the storyline becomes quite risque and sexually graphic. Great story, well told, enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Original, witty but very different from the popular musical .......2007-09-10

I saw a stage production of WICKED before reading the book. The musical had surprised me with its unique, clever spin on the classic L. Frank Baum story made into a phenominon by the 1939 movie version, so I was interested to see this source material.

Maguire has done a Herculean task in concocting this detailed story that is so innovative and yet intricately tied to the Baum series. The details and politicizing eventually slow down the storytelling in third quarter of the book, but rejuvenates in time for the climax. But make no mistake, this is a very different & more adult version of Elphaba's life story than bounces across the Broadway stage.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the last installment!.......2007-09-24

Granted, this is not Wicked. But it is an excellent book, and I love where Maguire has taken this tale. I can't wait to read what must be a third book in this series - I am intrigued about the "loose ends" others mention - think of it like "empire strikes back" and you'll be okay with it!! Liir definitely does his share of whining and wandering in the desert, but the themes that echo our current politics and the revelations he makes at the end are fantastic.

1 out of 5 stars What a downer.......2007-08-27

"Wicked" had some odd plot points that made it difficult to read, but this book is impossible. And so depressing. I quit half-way through and threw it away.

1 out of 5 stars does mr maguire have any training as a writer?.......2007-07-22

what please was the point to this book?

Fine, I get that this kid was trying to find himself, but why was the author looking for his storyline as well? He tied up to plotlines except the elephant queen, & frankly I could care less about any of his characters. It was a wasted read. (I had not read wicked BTW, so I am not comparing here)

2 out of 5 stars Random, disjointed, and totally unbelievable.......2007-07-16

I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed "Wicked", and like many was willing to enter that world again. Unfortunately, "Son of a Witch" is just poorly written. We follow a sullen, joyless boy who steadfastly insists that there is no possibility that he is interesting or talented in any way. Unfortunately, he's right.

The book is full of non sequiturs both emotionally and in the logic of the story line, including: a completely random episode of homosexual sex, a life changing experience that seemingly makes no impression on the character (not the sex), a random appearance of a wizard like character, and immaculate conception of a child.

Who let this book go to press?

5 out of 5 stars Son of a Witch .......2007-06-30

Wonderful sequel to the fabulous "Wicked". I wish they would make both into movies! Follow Liir, Elphaba's could be son, through his adventures after "the witch" dies. Sickened by Dorothy's "cheap" niceness, he floats away from the ragtag fellowship of the yellow brick road and strikes out on his own with a mission.

If you thought Elphaba was a tragic figure of low self esteem and an overwhelming urge for parental love, wait until you meet her possible son. A childhood worthy of "Oliver" he wanders throughout his adolescence trying to find himself, his past, and his long ago kidnapped friend. Or half-sister?

This character is as memorable, endearing, and tragic as Elphaba ever was.

The author is to be commended for both books. How about a third book?

Book Description

The evil night things that prowl Cincinnati despise witch and bounty hunter Rachel Morgan. Her new reputation for the dark arts is turning human and undead heads alike with the intent to possess, bed, and kill her -- not necessarily in that order.

Now a mortal lover who abandoned Rachel has returned, haunted by his secret past. And there are those who covet what Nick possesses -- savage beasts willing to destroy the Hollows and everyone in it if necessary.

Forced to keep a low profile or eternally suffer the wrath of a vengeful demon, Rachel must nevertheless act quickly. For the pack is gathering for the first time in millennia to ravage and to rule. And suddenly more than Rachel's soul is at stake.

2 out of 5 stars So Sad.......2007-09-10

I only mildly enjoyed book 1, but I saw potential, so I went ahead and purchased books 2 & 3. They were by far much better books and I was excited to read the 4th. Unfortunately, it was a very sorry addition to the series. None of the characters do any growing and the only real plot development is the addition of werewolves into the mix, which does nothing to improve the story. It just bogs down an already complicated story line started in the first three books. For some reason we leave all of the interesting side characters behind for these flat underdeveloped weres. I'm sorry but it turned Rachel into a poorman's Anita Blake. Hopefully, book 5 will get back on track, but I'm waiting for the reviews before purchasing.

3 out of 5 stars bad book binding.......2007-08-23

Unrelated to the actual content of the book, I've discovered that there is weak binding for my copy of this book. Pages have fallen out, and I am actually left with a chunk of paper with no cover.

5 out of 5 stars Good book sad ending.......2007-08-08

Personally I love rachel and the gang. I was saddened by the ending of this book. I will be curious to see where the next one will lead. Very entertaining novel.

5 out of 5 stars Werewolf Difficulties.......2007-08-06

A Fistful of Charms (2006) is the fourth Urban Fantasy novel in the Rachel Morgan series, following Every Which Way But Dead. In the previous volume, Rachel almost caught Stanley Saladan, but Lee jerked her into the ever-after, where they were confronted by the demon Algaliarept. Rachel escaped only with the assistance of the very powerful Newt, but returned to the real world with another demon mark.

In this novel, a group of Werewolf alpha males, including David Hue's boss, are upset about her status as the alpha female of David's pack. They lure Rachel and David to a deserted building, escort David back out, and strap Rachel so that she cannot use ley line magic. Then Karen -- an old flame of David's -- challenges Rachel for the position. Since Rachel is not a Werewolf and cannot use her magic, it will be Rachel in human form fighting against Karen as a wolf.

Rachel learns something new about Werewolves during the fight. A pack can share their power with a member. Karen turns to wolf form in thirty seconds flat and doesn't feel any pain despite the injuries inflicted by Rachel. Then David returns without his escorts and starts distracting the remaining alpha males.

Karen soon learns that the human form can inflict pain on a wolf. Rachel punches, bites and throws Karen around the floor and every bit of it causes pain. When David tosses the splat ball gun to Rachel, the fight comes to an abrupt ending. Since the three alpha males who went out with David never returned, the requisite eight alphas were not available to witness the fight, so Rachel wins on a technicality.

After that unexpected occurrence, Rachel gets together with Ceri and they modify a ley line spell to allow Rachel to turn into a wolf. The next time anyone tries to challenge her for alpha status, Rachel is going to give them a surprise. She can become a wolf on the whisper of a single keyword.

In this story, Rachel also has problems with fairies. Ever since Jenks -- the pixie partner in Vampiric Charms -- moved out with his family, the churchyard garden has been open to invasion by fairies. Now Rachel has a nest full of the hateful creatures tearing up the herbs and dandelions just to get at bugs and she isn't doing too well at driving them off.

Luckily, Matalina and Jih -- the eldest daughter -- come visiting to ask Rachel for a favor. Upon seeing the fairies, Matalina draws an arrow in her bow and orders the fairies off the property. Jih waves her silver sword at the fairies. After a single arrow through a fairy wing, the garden is soon free of the fairy presence. Pixies are very deadly little creatures.

When Matalina returns from checking out Jih's garden, Rachel learns that her ex-boyfriend Nick Sparagmos had talked Jax -- the eldest son of Jenks and Matalina -- into going with him to steal a statue. Matalina told her husband to ask Rachel and Ivy for help, but Jenks refused. Now he is trying to raise money to take a plane to Michigan to rescue Jax, which only shows how poorly he is thinking since pixies get really sick flying in planes due to the pressure changes.

Rachel finds out where Jenks will be working and ambushes him in an alley. She forces him to listen to her as she casually mentions that she will soon be driving to Michigan and might have room for him in the van. Unfortunately for Jenks, he agrees to go with her before learning that Rachel plans to transform him into human size so that he can help drive and eat human food on the way.

The next day, Rachel and Jenks are on their way to Michigan. Ivy and Kristen remain behind to watch out for Piscary's interests. Jenks is dressed in an old set of sweats donated by Kristen, so Rachel plans on a shopping excursion as soon as they reach Mackinaw.

This story achieves a new high point in tensions and action. Rachel finds herself in situations that she had never previously even imagined. Maybe she IS an adrenaline junky!

Highly recommended for Harrison fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of preternatural creatures, high adventure, and some sexual antics.

4 out of 5 stars Different twist........2007-06-27

This book was a good change of pace for us. My husband and I both read Pratchett's Disc World series and found this series to be just as enjoyable in its own way. Of course, anything with Granny Weatherwax involved has to be good reading anyway. Tiffany Aching comes into her own in this book and proves herself to be a worthwhile character.

5 out of 5 stars Tiffany is back and even better than before........2007-06-11

Terry Pratchett has continued the wonderful story of Tiffany Aching he began in The Wee Free Men and Hat full of sky with Wintersmith. I can say no wrong about this book. The story is engaging, funny and even though it is a young adult book it is perfect for all ages. I have never been very eloquent, and I always get tongue tied when it comes to writing these reviews. So I hope you will take my word for it and please, first read The Wee Free Men,Hat full of sky and then Wintersmith. The story of Tiffany is one we can all relate to on some level. Losing someone you love very much, bearing great responsibility no matter what your age, learning the difference between being a leader and being a follower, plus there is the Nac Mae Feegle (sp?) that make any day a party!

4 out of 5 stars Great, but not the greatest in the series........2007-06-01

I did like the book (It's Pratchett, how can you not?) but at the same time it took a while to warm up to the characters this time. I'm on my second reading. Although the Feegles are near and dear to my heart (I wish I had a few) the best character other than Tiffany is Miss Treason. I'd love to see her more, but then she... well, you'll have to read it.
Bottom line is, buy it, read it. You won't regret it because you'll want to read it again. The more you read it the more you will like it.
In fact, the whole Tiffany series is completely readable to kids. Mine loved them!

3 out of 5 stars The Wee Kids.......2007-05-24

Most of Pratchett's books have an adult component that is really entertaining. The Wee series not so much. It is an enjoyable romp but kinda loses fantasy creds at the end. Not to say I didn't enjoy it, but his main series on witches is much better

5 out of 5 stars A Hero Despite Himself.......2007-05-13

Wintersmith (2006) is the third fantasy novel in the Discworld for Young Adults series, following A Hat Full of Sky. A glossary of Feegle terms (compiled by Miss Perspicacia Tick) is included in the introduction.

In the previous volume, Esme Weatherwax granted Tiffany Aching the right to call her Granny. After Tiffany showed the hiver the way to die, Miss Weatherwax even presented Tiffany with her hat. Later, Tiffany returned the hat to Granny Weatherwax and was told that a real witch made her own hat. Tiffany then learned something about her Granny Aching and about hats made out of sky.

In this novel, Tiffany is almost thirteen years old and still training to be a witch. For the past three months, she has been living with Miss Eumenides Treason, which is a bit unusual. Other witch trainees have not lasted more than a day with Miss Treason. Such transient behavior generally would be viewed with utmost disapproval by senior witches, but not when Miss Treason is involved. Yet Tiffany finds Miss Treason to be very inspirational.

Miss Treason has a reputation even among witches. Since witches are professionally odd, it is a bit redundant to say that Miss Treason is odd. Yet she goes far beyond the usual witchery oddness.

Miss Treason really likes the color black. She not only wears black clothes -- not unusual for a witch -- but she also likes black walls, floors, ceilings and even black cheese. Moreover, Miss Treason carries a clock around with her that is made of black iron and clanks instead of ticks.

Miss Treason is 113 years old and subject to the usual infirmities of the elderly; for example, she doesn't seem to need sleep. Yet she has an odd way of responding to such problems. When she went blind at age sixty, she started using the eyes of animals, reading sights right out of their minds.

When Miss Treason went deaf at age seventy-five, she likewise Borrowed other ears. Lately Miss Treason has started Borrowing sight from a pair of ravens. Sometimes Miss Treason uses Tiffany's eyes, but Tiffany doesn't like this since it tingles her mind.

In this story, Tiffany has a strange introduction to the Wintersmith. Without any thought, she is impelled by her feet into the middle of a Dark Morris dance in the place reserved for the Wintersmith and the Summer Lady. In the past, the Wintersmith has had only fleeting encounters with his opposite number, but now he has become aware of Tiffany and confuses her with the Summer Lady.

The Wintersmith is determined to dance again with Tiffany. He even tries making himself a human body out of this and that and an iron nail. The Summer Lady also becomes aware of Tiffany as the other woman and really doesn't like her very much, but somehow Tiffany manifests a few of Summer's powers.

The Wintersmith has a strange way of courting the ladies. He shapes each snowflake to look like Tiffany. Even worse, he produces huge icebergs formed like her. Such things can really embarrass a young witch!

Of course, the Feegles become involved in this affair. Since Tiffany had briefly been their felda, the wee free men have been ordered by the current felda, Jeannie, to protect her. With the Wintersmith, the only protection is evasion. After all, the Wintersmith is one of the elemental forces of nature, in charge of the cold winds, snow, ice and other winter weather.

This story also involves Roland, Tiffany's friend (but not boyfriend). They exchange letters, which is not easy since Roland's aunts have him under siege and Tiffany doesn't want his mail delivered to the farmhouse. At one point, Tiffany has an eruption of jealousy when Roland writes about viewing the watercolors of a young lady to whom he has been introduced by his aunts.

The Feegles are training Roland to be a Hero to provide protection for Tiffany. First they have to instill the right attitude. They check out a Romantic Novel for Roland from the traveling librarians.

The story includes the usual informative footnotes -- e.g, "*Werk..." -- and many of Tiffany's friends and associates. It also introduces Anoia, the Goddess of Things That Get Stuck in Drawers. And it tours one section of the Underworld.

Unfortunately, the author must be losing his touch. I had only two fits of uncurbable laughter! His footnotes are also becoming scarcer, but that might have something to do with the intended Young Adult readership. Usually the footnotes are openly subversive of Established Authority.

Highly recommended for Pratchett fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of practical witchcraft, wee blue warriors, and other grand and glorious aspects of the Discworld. Anyone new to this series should read the first installment: The Wee Free Men.

3 out of 5 stars Neat book, not exactly what I thought it'd be........2007-06-13

I am a die hard Charmed fan and my daughter has recently through re-runs caught the bug,so I ordered this book for her birthday assuming it would be like the "Book of Shadows" on the show. I expected pictures and descriptions of demons and things and the spells they'd cast on the show. It did have some of the spells, and a lot of information on the wiccan religion but, not a demon or ghost in sight. While I find wicca interesting if I wanted a book about it I'd have ordered one on the subject. In it's favor if your'e interested in the craft or in behind the scenes information on the show you'd like the book but, it's not the companion book the title suggests.

5 out of 5 stars "Charming" book..........2007-05-20

I love this book. It has all sorts of information about Wicca, spells, and more and lots of interesting tid bits about the show "Charmed" that for a fan is really a plus!!!

4 out of 5 stars More about Wicca than "Charmed" .......2007-02-13

I think the book is fun to read, yet I wanted something that related more to the show. However, I have an interest in gemstones and the book goes into detail about the use of them as well as candles and herbs. So, it's interesting and fun, but may not be exactly what you want if you're more interested in the show.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-02-10

This is a really cool book has tidbits about the show and all the girls. If your a fan of the show Charmed. This is a must have for your collection.

2 out of 5 stars It's interesting.......2007-01-18

The book was more about wicca then the actually show. I bought it because I thought it was more show oriented. If wicca doesn't interest you I wouldn't buy it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely delicious!.......2007-10-02

I can't remember the last time I had this much fun reading a book. Every page drips with action, humor and mix of creatures that are good, bad, some in between and also those walking on both sides of existence; dead and the undead. Kim Harrison has created a magnificent world of witches, vampires, demons, pixies, fairies, leprechauns and all sorts of shape shifters. This is the first book in the Rachel Morgan series and I'm in luck to have them all waiting for me on my shelf.

Most of the time I stick to straight horror, no pixy dust and warlocks for me but I just couldn't help myself and jumped into Harrison's world of mischief, mystery and magic. Rachel Morgan plays a bounty hunter working for Inland Security where magical creatures rule with iron laws. Fed up with her cruel boss she decides to leave only to end up with a death contract on her head, thus the title. With help from friends of mighty talents she decides to plan a way out to set herself free and to help he IS catch biodrug lord in order to have them cancel their call on her head. Little does she know what a tough task it proved and ends up getting chased by more than one bad guy. The story leaves the reader ready for the next book in the series so everything does not wrap up completely.

I adored reading about Rachel's magic and her charms, they were her main way of practicing spells and were used to save her skin a few times. The reader is send on a wild ride as Rachel transforms herself, battles animals and demons, fairies and avoids getting bitten by some charming vamps. This was a blast to read, if only all the books were written this way, the world would probably have riots in front of the bookstores and TV's would cease to exist.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and Feisty.......2007-09-13

Dead Witch Walking is a perfect example of this type of book. Ms. Harrison has created a rich and realistic world packed with fun, believable characters. You find yourself rooting for the heroine right away as she travels from one mishap to another. Despite things not always going her way, she still emerges as a strong, self-sufficient heroine who's willing to go toe to toe with the bad guys.

The supporting cast is also strong in this book. Ivy, our heroine's living vampire partner and roommate, is perfectly mysterious. My favorite character, though, is Jenks, the third partner at the firm. Jenks is a pixie - 4 inches tall, with dragonfly wings and still all man.

Although this book is not a cliffhanger - it wraps up acceptably well - it is very obvious there is still a lot of story to be told. I look forward to discovering where Rachel Morgan will head next.

5 out of 5 stars Once you read one, you just can't stop.......................2007-09-03

This series and the introduction of the characters and their world is very refreshing and actually downright intriguing. One actually immerse one's self in Rachel's world. Kim Harrison created something special.

3 out of 5 stars It was alright. 3 1/2 stars, really........2007-09-01

This was an alright book. It has a great mix of characters, all with their own personalities different from each other. The plot was interesting enough to keep you wanting to read more. There were only a few things i found annoying, but those few things *seriously* annoyed me. Firstly, this book is written in the first person perspective - which i usually prefer, btw - with the witch Rachel Morgan as our main character. She annoyed me to no end - which, incidentally, makes it a bit hard to enjoy the book. She was self-centered throughout the entire book, and when the author tried to make her sound as if she was worried about another person, she would do it by having Rachel blame herself for everything. Also, Rachel repeatedly thinks the same things over and over (simply worded a bit differently). For example, when Rachel leaves the I.S. she thinks they won't come after her because they wanted her gone anyway. She thinks this same thing many times before finding out it isn't true. After awhile it gets annoying having her tell you the same thing over and over. Also we are constantly reminded of how much the vampire (and her roommate) Ivy "scares the crap out of her", as if we forgot she had said it 6 pages back as well. I like Ivy's character, and i didn't like how Rachel was constantly hurting her feelings by not trusting her, repeatedly. The one time Ivy does do something to give Rachel a reason to be afraid, i swear Rachel never lets us forget it for a second afterwards. I love books with pixies, vampires, werewolves and the like, so i gave this book a try. Though i definitely prefer Moon Called (Mercy Thompson Series, Book 1) over Dead Witch Walking, I don't regret reading this book.
ANYWAYS, besides the annoyance that was Rachel, I liked most all the other characters. The pixie, Jenks, is the most hilarious character in the book, and gives the book a fun feel to go along nicely with the non-stop action.
Dead Witch Walking was interesting enough, though, that I still want to read the next one, The Good, the Bad, and the Undead (Rachel Morgan, Book 2) . Rachel Morgan isn't my kind of character, but everyone else is so i suppose it makes up for it a bit. I'd suggest checking this out from the library if you can, before buying it. If you can't get it from a library, then, well, it is a cheaply priced book for all its 400 pages.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Enthralling........2007-08-26

After having read all five books so far in this series, I can't wait for the next one. I found it to be fresh, original and invigorating. I highly recommend these books to anyone who is a fan of the genre.

Pratchett (of Discworld fame) and Gaiman (of Sandman fame) may seem an unlikely combination, but the topic (Armageddon) of this fast-paced novel is old hat to both. Pratchett's wackiness collaborates with Gaiman's morbid humor; the result is a humanist delight to be savored and reread again and again. You see, there was a bit of a mixup when the Antichrist was born, due in part to the machinations of Crowley, who did not so much fall as saunter downwards, and in part to the mysterious ways as manifested in the form of a part-time rare book dealer, an angel named Aziraphale. Like top agents everywhere, they've long had more in common with each other than the sides they represent, or the conflict they are nominally engaged in. The only person who knows how it will all end is Agnes Nutter, a witch whose prophecies all come true, if one can only manage to decipher them. The minor characters along the way (Famine makes an appearance as diet crazes, no-calorie food and anorexia epidemics) are as much fun as the story as a whole, which adds up to one of those rare books which is enormous fun to read the first time, and the second time, and the third time...

Book Description

According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner.

So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon—both of whom have lived amongst Earth's mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle—are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture.

And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist . . .

4 out of 5 stars Nice and Accurate prophecies on the end of the world.......2007-10-02

I find a lot of fantasy comedy rather forced, but this excursion into the land of the apocalypse is clever and funny. It's a case where having two authors involved in a book really seems to have paid off.

The Antichrist is born - and both Heaven and Hell are in a race to make sure he does what THEY want. However, Agnes Nutter, Witch and Prophet has seen all this coming and has got her descendents to make sure that the best well laid plans can be thwarted - or at least twisted into a new shape.

I enjoyed this novel. Its one of those books that the more you think about it you realise that it rips off a lot of well known horror movies and adventure stories and to top it off is packed with relevant social commentary. Having said that though, they don't stop you enjoying a story that will make most people laugh out loud a few times before they know they've even done it.

2 out of 5 stars Not Gaiman's Best.......2007-10-01

I'm not too familiar with Terry Pratchett, but I've read and enjoyed almost everything Neil Gaiman's written, which is why I decided to give this a shot. It started out promisingly enough--I laughed out loud 2-3 times, and the main characters, the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, are interesting and well-written. The problem is after the first 200 pages or so, when the story seems to run out of steam. Most of the jokes feel "forced", and they concentrate too much on the Antichrist and his friends, which would be okay had those characters been more interesting. The Antichrist is supposed to be 11 years old at that point, but judging by the way he and his friends talk and act, I'd put them more at 6-7 tops. This was really annoying to me, and really ruined the mood. Also, the tone of the last 75 pages or so really becomes too preachy and feel-good for my tastes. I only finished it because it was so short. Overall, if you're a die-hard Gaiman (or Pratchett) fan, I'd recommend it just to round out your collection, but I can't say I'd recommend it for those who are unfamiliar with their work.

5 out of 5 stars good omens is more than good, it's fabulous.......2007-09-30

Good Omens was way too much fun. I loved it--so much that I read it again a second time as soon as I finished it. It's about Armegeddon, written with humor, intelligence, and a lovely sense of timing. Quirky, hysterical, the story works on all sorts of levels. And the characters are immensely likable... even the bad guys. If you like humorous, fantastical books, definitely read this one.

5 out of 5 stars great melding of the minds/ melding of great minds.......2007-09-28

First, it's laugh out loud in some places, so be warned. Second, I loved trying to figure out who wrote what bit... it was easy, and I'm probably wrong on 90% of it. Gaiman's dry and sharp wit tempered Pratchett's word play and silliness to make a SUBLIME novel prophecy about the (not quite) end of the world.

3 out of 5 stars Totally overrated.......2007-09-17

It's Holy Grail meets The Omen. Very clever conceit/premise with a few funny scenes scattered throughout. In general, however, I found the writing to be subpar and the characters were only vaguely fleshed out (except for Crowley and Az). Most of the time I could actually hear the authors patting themselves on the back for being so clever. Ugh. Not sure why everyone raves about this book. I haven't read the other Neil Gaiman books so not sure if this is a typical effort or if I have Terry Pratchett to blame.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
