Book Description
Filthy Rich Clients refers to ultra-graphically rich applications that ooze cool. They suck the user in from the outset and hang on to them with a death grip of excitement.
Filthy Rich Clients: Developing Animated and Graphical Effects for Desktop Java™ Applications shows you how to build better, more effective, cooler desktop applications that intensify the user experience.
The keys to Filthy Rich Clients are graphical and animated effects. These kinds of effects provide ways of enhancing the user experience of the application through more attractive GUIs, dynamic effects that give your application a pulse, and animated transitions that keep your user connected to the logical flow of the application. The book also discusses how to do so effectively, making sure to enrich applications in sensible ways.
In-depth coverage includes
-
Graphics and GUI fundamentals: Dig deep into the internals of how Swing and Java 2D work together to display GUI applications onscreen. Learn how to maximize the flexibility of these libraries and use them most effectively.
-
Performance: Follow in-depth discussions and tips throughout the book that will help you write high-performing GUI applications.
-
Images: Understand how images are created and used to make better Java applications.
-
Advanced graphics: Learn more about elements of Swing and Java 2D that are of particular benefit to Filthy Rich Clients.
-
Animation: Discover general concepts of animation, as well as how to use the facilities provided in the Java platform. Learn new utility libraries that vastly simplify animations in Java.

A fun and useful Java book.......2007-08-22
This is one of those "fun books" on Java that you used to see so much of in the 90's but are pretty much no longer written. This book is about building better desktop applications that employ interesting graphical and animated effects. This book was meant to be worked through from beginning to end, although if you are already familiar with the technology that does not mean you can't skip around. The book has plenty of code and some math. However, as in the example in the section on morphing, the book does not try to get into heavy-duty math. If there are open source libraries that do the trick, as there are in the case of morphing effects, the authors refer you to that library. They do explain math if all it involves is something on the level of fairly simple matrix algebra - blurring for example. The book is not a primer on Swing. It assumes the reader has experience in that area. However, some of the touchier aspects of Swing that may not be self-evident to even experienced Swing programmers are explained in the first couple of chapters of the book. In particular, the authors do a pretty good job of explaining how Swing and Java 2D work together, which is hard to find in books and even in online tutorials. Obviously, there is lots of code involved in such a book, and although there are snippets in the book to the point that you can understand what's going on, you'll want to go to the book's website at O'Reilly & Associates and download the whole thing so you can study it and play with it. The book is divided into four parts as follows:
Part I - Graphics and GUI Fundamentals
Not a fundamental tutorial on building GUI's in Java, it points out the stuff you need to get up to speed with the APIs and techniques that later parts of the book build upon.
Chapter 1. Desktop Java Graphics APIs: Swing, AWT, and Java 2D

Book Description
While the entire world knows Mark Twain as the renowned author of many classic American novels, few people are aware that he was also a highly successful businessman. In fact, more than half of his life was consumed by moneymaking pursuits, which often resulted in writing projects being neglectedbut at the same time, these adventures were the inspiration behind many of the characters found in his books.
In Ignorance, Confidence, and Filthy Rich Friends, Peter Krass captures a little-known side of this American icon and details the roller coaster ride of his business ventures in a dramatic, entertaining, and informative narrative style. From Twain's time as the founder of his own publishing housewhere he made a small fortune publishing General Ulysses S. Grant's memoirsto his foray into venture capitalism and investment in numerous start-up firms, to his focus on his own inventions, this engaging book reveals the Mark Twain that few of us know: the no-nonsense, successful American businessman.
Customer Reviews:
Informative, but with failed wit.......2007-08-08
The author, Peter Krass, does a comendable job in portraying the history of Clemens's (Twain's) business folies for the most part, but he confoundedly tries to include cliched bits of wit on the tail end of many of the historical vingnettes. All in all this failed wit can be ingnored and it is an overall fun and informative read. (3.5 stars)
Pursuit of Wealth.......2007-03-05
Who knew Twain pursued wealth with the zest of a robber baron. This book is highly entertaining and instructive as there is much business insight and Twain's adventures are notable. While not a full biography, I enjoyed the excerpts from Twain's writing - you get a good sense of him. The pace of the book is good. Business people and those interested in Twain will enjoy it.

Book Description
Now in Peprback for the first time.
Since World War II, the American public has become fully aware of the exploits of the 101st Airborne Division, the paratroopers who led the Allied invasions into Nazi-held Europe. But within the ranks of the 101st, a sub-unit attained legendary status at the time, its reputation persisting among veterans over the decades.
Primarily products of the Dustbowl and the Depression, the Filthy13 grew notorious, even within the ranks of the elite 101st. Never ones to salute an officer, or take a bath, this squad became singular within the Screaming Eagles for its hard drinking, and savage fighting skill--and that was only in training. Just prior to the invasion of Normandy, a "Stars and Stripes" photographer caught U.S. paratroopers with heads shaved into Mohawks, applying war paint to their faces. Unknown to the American public at the time, these men were the Filthy 13. After parachuting behind enemy lines in the dark hours before D-Day, the Germans got a taste of the reckless courage of this unit - except now the men were fighting with Tommy guns and explosives, not just bare knuckles. In its spearhead role, the 13 suffered heavy casualties, some men wounded and others blown to bits. By the end of the war 30 men had passed through the squad.
Throughout the war, however, the heart and soul of the Filthy 13 remained a survivor named Jake McNiece, a half-breed Indian from Oklahoma - the toughest man in the squad and the one who formed its character. McNiece made four combat jumps, was in the forefront of every fight in northern Europe, yet somehow never made the rank of PFC. The survivors of the Filthy 13 stayed intact as a unit until the Allies finally conquered Nazi Germany.
The book does not draw a new portrait of earnest citizen soldiers. Instead it describes a group of hardscrabble guys whom any respectable person would be loath to meet in a bar or dark alley. But they were an integral part of the U.S. war against Nazi Germany. A brawling bunch of no-goodniks whose only saving grace was that they inflicted more damage on the Germans than on MPs, the English countryside and their own officers, the Filthy 13 remain a legend within the ranks of the 101st Airborne.
Over 20,000 copies sold of the hardcover edition.

pathfinder on the loose.......2007-02-14
I met the author at a paratrooper reunion,(the 26th infantry pathfinder platoon in 2006) and was amazed of how great a storyteller he was, he was a great featured speaker. But the fact that Jake is a natural storyteller shouldn't fool you, jake's adventures were quite real and even in the 1980's , my pathfinder unit was able to get away with some pretty wild antics as long as we did our mission well. This book is well worth buying or reading because it has the laid back style of jake himself. Men like jake helped us win that war and men like him are still around fighting and having adventures in todays airborne units as well. They make no apologies for killing anyone who is trying to kill their buddies regardless what anyone else thinks about it. The book is a unapologetic look at a wild trooper and his war and on that ground alone I would say buy it!
Good Parts, but mostly bad.......2006-03-24
I just would like to add that the book was a real letdown for me. There were some really funny parts in the first half of the book, while the unit was in training but when the unit actually went into combat in Normandy the book really went down hill fast.
Very Impressive.......2006-02-22
I just finshed reading the Filthy Thirteen by Richard Killblane and
found it very interesting. I actually went to church with Jake McNiece when I lived in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He was a very interesting individual. I have the highest regard for his efforts during WWII. The writing of this book isn't the best and it was difficult to follow at times since it jumped from first person to third person. Over looking the writing style I couldn't help but be impressed and appreciative of what the men in battle had to endure.
I would recommend this book if for nothing else than to get an upclose view of war.
I also read some previous reviews stating they doubted the validity of Jakes escapades. As I stated before I personally know Jake and his escapades mentioned in this book although seem over the top are quite true.
No men are Saints, angels with vice.......2006-01-31
First my excuses for my poor english. I'm Dutch.
This book is somewhat diffent from other memoires. But the great power of this book is the individual story.
I guess that for people who do not know european culture, geopraphy and history this will be a strange book. But I can follow the whereabouts off these men every step he writes them out. To (older)people in Holland these men were angels from the sky and after that heroes and normal men.
Best Parts in the book.
-Jump in Normandy. The psychological lonelyness that he discribes, the chaotic anarchy, determination, succes of failure, brillant. (unbelievable, never read it so honest, disobbeying orders and so forth)
-Holland, operation market garden Disaster. (also read the road to berlin, by Megallis)
-Best part, the enormous after-war vacüum.
-In general the human discription of man needs in the 'wild'. Shelter, good food, a drink and.....
Three drawbacks, the lightness which is used to talk about heavy dramatic scenes is 'strange'(but still natural)
Futher a lot of detail is skipped. Last thing is that you never get feeling that death is all around, sometimes it feels like a walk over.
But the graves are still here.
OVERALL INIQUE DOCUMENT,
Greetings drs.H.I.J.Versteegden
Jake McNiece.......2005-01-30
is one of the genuine crazies in the 101st Airborne's family tree. I met him at the Toccoa, GA, reunion of the 506th PIR after I came back from Iraq and he was happy to sign my copy. Yes, the writing is crude, yes, Jake loves to tell a good story, but if you want a dry day by day account of the 506th's doings, sit down with Rendezvous with Destiny instead. One, Bob Sink wasn't quite as stuck-up as Dale Dye played him, and second, why do you think Jake never got promoted and spent half his time at Toccoa in the stockade? There's a reason the pic of the old stockade there at the camp is captioned "Jake McNiece's command post" in the county historical society literature, his antics have been a running joke in Division circles since 1943.
I think it was the pics of the Mohawked, face-painted guys with the Thompsons when I was a real little kid that got me started on all this in the first place. Now I know the story behind it all, and I'm glad I met a genuine hero of an earlier time.

Book Description
To call John Waters a cultural icon is almost insulting. This is after all a man who's entire career has been dedicated to the explosion of mainstream culture. But nonethless, from his earliest films he has been the center of controversy, acclaim, revilement, and reverence. He is the director of the notorious Pink Flamingos (in which the 300 pound transvestite Divine snacks on poodle poop) and Female Trouble (in which Divine as a man--with really nasty skidmarks on his shorts--rapes himself as a woman) as well as the crossover smash Hairspray (which introduced Ricki Lake to the world) and Serial Mom (in which Kathleen Turner offed Patty Hearst with a white pump.) From the days when the press wouldn't return his phone calls to the present, promoting his new films on network morning shows, and giving commentary on NPR, CNN, TNT, and The Sundance Channel, Waters has consistently been the outrageous voice of avant garde cinema. Critic Robrt Pela, examines Waters's life and impact on our culture in this book which is both a biography of Waters, and a remarkable, often hilarious, always illuminating look at his films, their impact, and the not to be believed cult of Waters fans.

Customer Reviews:
A light read that offers nothing new to the seasoned John Waters fan.......2006-01-22
While "Filthy: The Weird World of John Waters" is servicable as a brief overview of John Waters' career, it really doesn't offer anything one couldn't learn by reading Waters' "Shock Value" and "Crackpot: The Obsessions of John Waters", Frances Milstead's "My Son Divine", or even by watching Steve Yeager's great documentary Divine Trash, all of which are vastly superior to this book. In fact, most of the quotes in "Filthy" are taken from those other works, implying that the author hasn't actually come into contact with any of the people involved with John Waters' films (or as fans like to call them, Dreamlanders). The book begins with a concise look at Waters' childhood and travels through the making of his films, all but skipping over his latter period works like Serial Mom and Cecil B. Demented. Unfortunately, the chapters aren't laid out very well and the film anecdotes are interrupted by idiotic stories like an unnecessary and disrespectful segment where the author supposedly channels Divine through a psychic, or mean-spirited descriptions of a few Waters fans told through the eyes of a man who clearly isn't as big of a fan as he makes himself out to be.
Another unpropitious aspect of "Filthy" is that the author makes one too many mistakes throughout the text, either with facts or with plot descriptions. These errors may be considered minor to the casual Waters fan, but will absolutely ruin the reading experience for John Waters fanatics by prompting them to take what the author says with a grain of salt. For example, Pela states that Jean Hill has no lines in Polyester. Anyone who has seen the film, and enjoys it as much as I do, knows that this is not true. Her scene is one of the funniest moments in the film, as she spews out insults a mile a minute to a passing car full of teenagers.
In addition, one can easily tell which films Pela doesn't care much for because he nearly eschews them completely. The passage about Serial Mom is less than a page, which is disappointing because it is the best film from Waters' post-Polyester days. It's also sad when what seems like half of the book is comprised of a filmography with cast and crew lists, plot synopses, dialogue, and other assorted facts that are either repeated from earlier chapters or could (and should) have been placed elsewhere in the book.
What is good about "Filthy"? It is well-written and is pretty comprehensive in outlining how these films were made, in a cramped sort of way. The chapters on Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, and Polyester were thorough and the chapter about the author's visit to Baltimore was mildly amusing. There were a few quotes from Waters, Divine, Mink Stole, and others, that I had never read before and a couple of facts here and there that enlightened me to a point. I suppose "Filthy" would be a good guide for people who know little or nothing about John Waters and his films, but it is obvious that Pela has no first-hand experience speaking with the people behind these films. The chapters about the fans and about Pela contacting Divine beyond the grave--not to mention the bloated filmography at the end of the book--are simply filler. The author has taken all of this information from other works of reference and condensed it into one compact resource, which may be fine for some, but leave others like me begging for more substance.
"Isn't there a law or something" (quote from Rex Reed).......2003-10-19
The book "Filthy" is for all the die-hard John Waters fans out there, and you know who you are...
Author Robrt Pela begins his book with a glimpse into the mind of the five year-old John Waters. Forget the typical childhood icons of the Easter bunny and Father Christmas, for it seems that little John Waters dreamed of car crashes and roller coaster accidents. It's really no wonder that Waters grew up to be the greatest cult film director in the world. After a brief glimpse into the twisted mind of Waters at 5, Pela then treks to Baltimore in an attempt to find the sort of characters who inhabit a typical Waters film.
Pela describes Waters's association with Divine--how they met, and how the Dreamlanders formed, and charts the course of Waters's career--film-by-film--with reactions to each film from various critics.
Pela visits a medium who has communication with many 'relocated' famous persons. The session between the medium and Divine is priceless. One of the very best chapters covers "the cult of John"--and my favourite part concerns a fan named Suki who only admits guests into her home based on quotes from John Waters films. Pela also interviews a fan who claims that Waters gets all of his ideas from a cat.
One very handy chapter covered themes in the films--including perceptions of suburbia, the family, and "the prowling pervert." Pela includes a section of "filmic influences," and an extremely detailed filmography. "Filthy" is written with wry humour throughout, and it is an easy read. I recommend the book to all Waters fans--everywhere--displacedhuman
Perfect introduction to the world of John Waters.......2003-01-18
Before reading this book, I knew little to nothing about John Waters. I'd only seen two of his films, Pecker and Cry-Baby, and I enjoyed both. One day I was shopping at my local bookstore when I noticed a announcement for a reading of this book by its author. I decided to attend. I'm glad I did. Not only did I get a couple of autographed copies, but I became introduced to a whole new world of trashy films.
I am a person of patterns. I like order. The way this book is set up chronologically really appeals to me. Robrt Pela did a great job setting up a description of each Waters project, along with a background on each of the players and Mr. Waters himself. I had no idea how disgusting John Waters really was (and continues to be). And how willing he was to put it all on film. In a trashy way, that appeals to me. Can't be perfect all the time.
The interviews with the bizarre Waters fans were well done. One would have to be pretty brave to converse with some of these folks. I liked how these interviews were set in-between the rest of the back story on Waters and his camp. I enjoy Robrt's sassy approach to his over anticipated introduction to Baltimore, and how at every turn he was disappointed that it wasn't more trashy.
My two favorite chapters are six and ten. I like six because it is nothing but quotes about one tiny scene. And ten because its the, "guide to recurring imagery and motifs in Johns Waters film." In this chapter, all the work has been done for the viewer. What could be better?
The filmography at the end is one of the best I have ever seen. I am constantly seeing and reading about movies. So to be able to read one as thorough as this one was, was a pleasant surprise. It was the perfect introduction to Waters world.
Well done Mr. Pela :)
Delightful!.......2002-09-16
In Filthy, Robrt Pela brings many things to life for the John Waters fan including some outrageously funny and far out fans! Baltimore itself comes to life throughout the book as Pela spins the tales of movie making history. But the most brilliant and hilarious resurrection Pela manages to pull off is that of Divine in Chapter Three.
The themes and motifs chapter and the filmography chapter were packed full of odd bits of trivia that were entertaining and fascinating. The book is informative yes, but incredibly funny! And how else could you, SHOULD you write about John Waters and his movies?
Waters himself said, "I pride myself on the fact that my work has no socially redeeming value." Maybe he's right, but he's become a movie icon and pop culture hero to many people nonetheless and Robrt Pela does a good job of explaining why that is in Filthy: The Weird World of John Waters.
The Adventures of Robrt Pela.......2002-09-12
There are things about Robrt Pela's book that I really like. For instance, I enjoyed his accounting of his first and aparently only trip to Baltimore. Without knowing it, Pela steps on the toes of nearly every fan who has fun in John's world. Pela missed out on the fun. It took John Waters a lifetime to fall in love with Charm City's characters, so much so that he escaped the suburbs to join them, film them, and present them to the rest of us as a loving parent, showing off his children. As a man who makes his living reviewing theater, Pela's approach is understandable. I guess I like the book because John liked it and who am I to argue with that? I recommend reading it as a guide for the novice, the curious, the uninitiated.

better than you think.......2003-03-29
I have shared this book with several organizations including both senior staff and board members ... all have found it very practical and energy-creating. The concepts are perhaps not new but Steckel puts together a simple, step by step process for people who have not been through it before. This makes it a little less overwhelming and a lot more doable. Of particular importance it the fact that a entrepreneurial venture must be embedded into your organization strategically and practically. So many business ventures become badly managed warts on the organization. Steckels approach helps prevent this from happening.
I wonder if the reviewers who panned the book: a) already run successful businesses making this book too basic or b) have a bitter taste in their mouths from failed ventures (maybe they should read the book again!)or c)wouldn't be caught dead sticking their necks out in a planned and deliberate way that Steckel prescribes.
All in all ... its worth the read. Don't let the title put you off. His point is "there is not dirty money and clean money there is only money."

Upon checking for my review just now, I realized that I erroneously reviewed this second edition. I assumed that I was writing about the first edition only. I have NOT READ the second edition. So please remove my review from the panel of reviews for this second edition. I could not leave the rating item blank, so the rating of 1--has no relevance. I apologize for the inconvenience.
worthwhile.......2002-04-12
Good for non-profit managers and board members who are not familiar with the subtleties and possibilities of income earning opportunities. Also, those with some knowledge and experience of having partnerships with businesses can validate what they are doing and get other ideas. The book has many vignettes to illustrate the authors' ideas and suggestions. Most of these are real life examples, not hypothetical. The title, however, can turn off people, sounds almost greedy and tacky. If one persists though, I think the authors give a more respectable twist to the phrase, "Filthy rich", somewhere in the introduction, and dont mean what it sounds. In contrast, the title of Steckel's other book, "Making Money While Making a Difference" is more appealing. Steckel has academic and consulting experience, so I would give credibility; however, the title makes you wonder if it is overstated. Read with caution but enthusiasm, which is perhaps what the authors really intended.

Worth the read and certainly the modest price. For the rookie and intermediate non-profit manager and board.
useless.......2001-03-23
The title should have been a warning. The information given is a general summary of the usual semantics found in Marketing 101 and Management 101. I have never seen a book with nothing but generalizations (239 pages in large print - it could easily fit into half that size) and no useful material. Whatever you are looking for, you will not find in here.

Customer Reviews:
Ironic, ain't it?.......2006-05-10
The very language that makes this book ever interesting and twists the twisted into beautiful icing rich deliciousness would make some English Lit. Teachers cringe. I love this book -- its modern analysis of our modern media drenched world . . . I ache for Darren, ugly on the outside, but so chewy and sweet on the inside . . . I can recognize aspects of myself in him. I love the business with the chat rooms -- some thoughts about them that I'd never thought before. Brian has an uncanny, better than nearly anyone ability to see some Truth, point out contradictions, and relish in the irony of life through the worlds he creates. I hope a collection of his short pieces is coming soon. Brian is able to leave out a lot of descriptions, which actually adds to the world of the story. This book is not at all bogged down or over burdened with redundant, superfluous overly descriptive garbage, like Dickens or Faulkner. Very entertaining, thought-provoking book, Brian!
absurdly humorous fiction.......2006-03-07
I was turned on to this book by a co-worker who knew that I was a fan of Chuck Palahniuk, Dennis Johnson, and Carlton Mellick the 3rd. He told me that this author, Brian J. Kamerer, wrote in a similar vein of strange fiction, but with a voice all his own. I borrowed a copy of this book from him, and liked it so much I still had to order my own from a local bookstore. It's fast-paced, strange, and unpredictable, but it is never wierd solely for the sake of being wierd. The often absurd plot is held together by very interesting and human characters who keep Dreamy Filthy Suicide from crossing the line between bizarre and just plain stupid. I recommend this for anyone who likes good, creative fiction that has definite re-read value.
Worth it if you like the Bizarre.......2006-03-06
The FBI, the Italian Mafia, and various neighborhood gangs, all fighting each other for a chance to "off" a no-named gang of-of-of--children? Like Carlton Mellick's books, this book recognizes the absurd and takes you to its center where you swim in it, revel in it, laugh-lap it up, until the last sentence has been read and reread. As a first time author, Brian shows great skill in demanding your attention, and you have no choice but to submit to the characters thoughts, actions, and speech. A must read for anyone who enjoys bizarro-fiction.
Like Whoa.......2006-03-05
So my boy got this book and he was all like, man this 'ish is the dopest! And I was like, pssh, fo real? I didn't believe him. But then, I decide to read it and I was like WHOA! This book is poppin' hot. The one part where that dude was like 'WWAAAA' then the other dude was shooting his glocks 'Blam Blam Blam!' and then I think they were eating pizza, and all of a sudden 'Look out behind you!!' You wanna know what happens next you'll just have to buy it, I ain't gonna ruin my boys ending like that, know what I'm sayin? But for serious, this was like a movie that I could read! - It was that good. BJK (that's what I call him now) is on the rise, and that's on the rilla!
A fresh and fast paced book.......2006-03-03
This book reads like a Dennis Johnson or Carlton Mellick the III book. It's strange and new and original. The jokes are funny and frequent and the surreal and fantastical story is quick and fun and leaves you wanting even more. This book is fast paced, hilarious, violent, sexual, totally wild and yet somehow remains touching and innocent all the while. So, if you want something a little different and lot of fun, than I highly suggest you check it out.
