Book Description
Destined to become a market classic, Dynamic Hedging is the only practical reference in exotic options hedging and arbitrage for professional traders and money managers
Watch the professionals. From central banks to brokerages to multinationals, institutional investors are flocking to a new generation of exotic and complex options contracts and derivatives. But the promise of ever larger profits also creates the potential for catastrophic trading losses. Now more than ever, the key to trading derivatives lies in implementing preventive risk management techniques that plan for and avoid these appalling downturns. Unlike other books that offer risk management for corporate treasurers, Dynamic Hedging targets the real-world needs of professional traders and money managers. Written by a leading options trader and derivatives risk advisor to global banks and exchanges, this book provides a practical, real-world methodology for monitoring and managing all the risks associated with portfolio management.
Nassim Nicholas Taleb is the founder of Empirica Capital LLC, a hedge fund operator, and a fellow at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University. He has held a variety of senior derivative trading positions in New York and London and worked as an independent floor trader in Chicago. Dr. Taleb was inducted in February 2001 in the Derivatives Strategy Hall of Fame. He received an MBA from the Wharton School and a Ph.D. from University Paris-Dauphine.

Dynamic Hedging...goo stuff.......2007-06-13
Great book, very easy read as it is written in a conversational tone. Covers all the issues associated with derivative trading in an intuitive manner.
Good Work.......2006-10-24
Definitely for pros. This book is one of the fewest which is concentrated on the hedging compared to the tons which explain pricing. The other pro of the book is you don't need to be a quant or a PhD guy to understand the book. If this seems what you are looking for, i recommend you get it.
the best book in options.......2006-03-24
This book is a really useful and practical introduction in derivatives from a guy who knows what he is talking about.
Plenty of illustrations and stories from real life. Mathematics is quite informal, and hence the book may not be used for PhD programs - it's a good master's level... good for a guy who wants to start trading options.
FOR EXPERIENCED TRADERS.......2006-02-27
VERY INFORMATIVE, WRITTEN BY AN ACTIVE TRADER, MANY USEFUL TIPS TO BE APPLIED ON THE JOB. ALL IN ALL AN EXCELLENT BOOK. PROVIDES REAL HELP AND KNOWLEDGE, MUST BE READ BY ACTIVE TRADERS.
Real book for traders.......2004-06-27
really great to figure out the intricacies of options. if you need something more conventional just get hull; this book is by someone who does it for a living and has different intuitions than what you get in the ivory tower.
some of the points are great but may need more updating
Book Description
Orchids are the largest family of plants in the world. With 30,000 known species, you could acquire a different orchid every day for eighty years and still not grow them all. Back in the realm of reality, readers of this beautiful book can quickly and easily find the orchids that are right for them -- which ones will thrive on a windowsill, which prefer artificial lights, and which need a greenhouse; which are for beginners, which for experts. And you can pinpoint the species within a particular genus that are the best ones to start with. Once you select your orchid, William Cullina's authoritative guide explains what to do to keep it alive and healthy. Featuring more than two hundred color photographs, Understanding Orchids covers everything you need to know to grow orchids successfully, whatever your level of interest or experience. With improved tissue-culture techniques making orchids more affordable, and the Internet making them readily available to consumers, growing orchids is more popular than ever: membership in the American Orchid Society has more than doubled in the last fifteen years. This is the book orchid fans have been waiting for.

very practical information.......2007-09-19
This book has alot of practical information and has much more detailed culture information about many different orchid families, also has information about small orchid families that I have not found in any other book about orchids. This book also gives step by step instructions on how to repot or divide several different types of orchids including paphiopediliums and Phrags.
Great book, lots of good ideas and beautiful pictures...........2007-02-10
I am an amateur orchid grower and have read a variety of books on the subject. So far, this is the best book I encountered and the most comprehensive. Not only that, it is a work of art, printed on high quality of paper. The pictures are outstanding and so is the carefully written text. This book is also just loaded with inexpensive ideas on various small projects that you can do to improve your results. If you are going to get one book on orchids, this should be it!
The best.......2007-02-06
I believe that this is the best book out there on orchids. Mr Cullina covers the important and often allusive culture issues confronted in growing orchids in real depth. He provides thoughtful, comon sense explanations for his reccomendations that go way beyond those found in other books I have read on the subject. The second half of the book details the cultural requirements and rates the difficulty level of 100 species of potential interest to growers with experience levels from beginner to expert. Much more than a coffee table book, Understanding Orchids is a valuable reference that belongs in every orchid enthuiast's library.
Friendly and useful.......2006-11-20
As a relatively new orchid grower, I found this to be one of the most useful books for a beginner. In addition, it is written is a very accessible, friendly style, with many examples of the author's struggles to succeed with orchids. I highly recommend it!
A great book for beginners.......2006-11-05
I bought this book as I was starting into the hobby of Orchids. The book is extremely informative on the basics and attempts to discuss common problems people have with Orchids. The most interesting sections are those on potting mediums and the individual orchid varieties commonly found at florists or even the grocery store.
biggest problem with the book is that it seems to convey the idea that any of the solutions will work which is not the case. Successful orchid growing requires an understanding through trial and error of what will work in your home. There are some basic tenants for everyone; however, they get lost in the details.
All in all, it's a great reference book and I would strongly recommend it.

Beautifully done book with hugh number of plants with a color photos and descriptions
Tropica Color Cyclopedia of Exotic Plants and Trees.......2005-12-13
I own the 5th edition. I glanced through a few pages (after having spent hours on the Internet researching tropical plants for my personal tropical garden) and had to buy it right then and there! I did not want to chance not being able to find it again. It's the best! I can't foresee ever having to wonder what any other tropical plant looks like! I've found plants in this book that I could not identify on the web or through local nurseries. I was not able to put this book down for hours after it's purchase and continue to use it almost daily. Totally worth the $185 price! If I'd lost it on the way home from having just purchased it, I'd be right back trying to buy another!
TROPICA.......2003-04-26
This book is the ultimate, before software, computers and Wal-Mart salespersons... .a book of this magnitude was and is still the Bible of horticulture.Alfred Graf, travels the world to bring the reader an astounding volume of plants both rare and usual, not only color photos but origins as well, which happens to be the best indicator of how a plant will thrive.I've owned this book for over twenty years, even replacing it after it was stolen. What else can I say...oh yeah,...Chrisalidocarpus Lutescens.
Tropica no Nonsense!.......2002-03-13
I recently got the chance to look over a copy of this book , and although I didn't get a chance to read it extensively nor in depth, I got the feeling that this was and is, one book , that no plant loving individuals library, should be with out. It is with out a doubt , a must have if you can get your hands on a copy.

This book is execellant for pictures. For information about growing and other details there is little.

A must have for serious Keepers and Breeders.......2007-10-01
Simply put, I am still in awe over the amount of information in this book. This is a MUST have for any reptile Vet, and anyone who is serious about keeping or breeding reptiles. Do not let the cost put you off. The info inside is worth much, much, more than they ask.
Bible on reptile medicine.......2007-02-16
Very comprehensive, much better than 1st edition. Recommend to anyone seeing reptiles in practice.
Don't wait .......2007-01-09
It is over a hundred dollars but put it off this is the book. You won't need any others.
Best in the market.......2006-02-21
Its definitely one of the best books on reptile surgery in the market if you're into real herping
Excellent Reference for anyone with a reptile/amphibian collection.......2005-11-07
I have a small reptile collection from which I refer to this book exclusively if any of the herps get sick or appear to be ill. Not all veterinarians know about reptile medicine and surgery so this is a great book for veterinarians broadening their field in animal medicine as well as, those of us who love reptiles. Mader also expresses to veterinarians cost for reptile patients (10% more than for dogs and cats, Dr. Mader states). The photos are in black and white with heavy duty pages that have photos and information based on every order of reptiles and amphibians with basic information about care requirements and do's and don'ts. I highly recommend this book for beginners to advanced collectors as well as, graduate students in veterinary medicine to include veterinarians. It is highly recommended that veterinarians increase their market to herps because herp sales will increase to 400% in the next 2 years.
Book Description
Although the pricing and hedging of derivatives contracts has been the subject of a large number of books, hardly any books exist on the actual design of derivatives contracts. Structured Equity Derivatives fills this gap in a remarkable way. The book introduces an approach to the structuring and practical application of derivatives that allows the reader to create his own derivatives solutions to an endless variety of problems. The approach is extremely natural - the only limit is the reader's own creativity.
Since it clearly explains the reasons why derivatives exist and why there is such a large variety, this is the book that should be read before picking up any other book on the pricing and hedging of derivatives. As the book concentrates on product design instead of pricing, there are no complex pricing formulas or numerical procedures. The emphasis is on intuition and common sense rather than complex formal results, which makes the book accessible to people from many different backgrounds.
Customer Reviews:
great book!.......2005-09-10
This is the best book on structured equity products so far, it is fun to read but never trivial.
Great introduction & overview.......2004-07-27
This is still a great introduction to the subject. Being familiar with the majority of current financial 'engineering' texts, I can honestly say this is still a very good book. It does what it claims to do - and sticks to the intended audience.
A nice book for starters..........2004-01-12
This is definitely a very useful book for students taking financial engineering courses or complete newcomers in the aera of structuring. The book's written in a very clear and approachable manner and the author doesn't bother you with obscur mathematics. However, being myself a structurer of derivative products, I must unfortunately say that this book didn't really improve my knowledge in the field of structuring. But since I believe that Dr. Kat's main objective was to primarily target newcomers in the area of structured products, and not any professionals working in the business, I still think that the book is a respectable achievement.
Finally!!!! A definitive guide for common sense people.......2002-05-23
This book offers readers, who have little knowlegde about structured products, the insides of it. It is easy to read and easy to understand. I bet the reviewer from New York and Seattle are in this business themselves, as to give this book such low ratings. These people are probably affraid that their clients will buy this book and find out later that they got ripped of by their ruthless bankers. If these people are in the business, they should not have bought the book it in the first place.... Go ask your colleagues!!!
It is true that the math is non-existent, but again there are loads of books written in english with loads of formulas in it that even most english speakers don't have a clue about, and most importanly, how to apply it. This is definitely a book on the side of the consumers of these products. Buy it, you won't waste your money!!!!
Good job Dr Kat!.......2002-05-15
Very good book on structuring of derivaties. Yes, this book is mainly on structuring not pricing and some reviewers seem to forget about that blaiming it on the lack of mind-boggling maths! Good one for someone who is new in the area or read some introductory books as Hull; everything is really decomoposed into easily understandable pieces so that you can understad every possible structure. Strong recommendation for those who want to _really_ understand structuring of derivatives.

In Exotic Betting, the horseplayer takes a colorful wagering ride by learning to maximize profits by betting on a multitude of exotic wagers including the daily double, exacta, trifecta, quinella, superfecta, pick 3, 4, and 6.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect Book .......2007-08-16
Steve explains the math behind exotic betting and perfect rationale for using multi-race bets. A must read for the fan who wants to get more from the track.
Solid review of sound wagering strategies.......2007-07-12
I thought this was a pretty solid book on the proper ways to construct exotic betting tickets. I found Crist's discussions of exacta and trifecta plays to be particularly interesting. Specifically, Crist tells the player to get away from the boxes (and other "chance plays") and go for big payouts by trusting your handicapping skills. Anyone can throw five longshots into a $1 exacta box and get lucky once and a while. Crist's philososphy, and that of many professional players, is to play less combinations at a greater price. Key your top horse over your second choice for $10. Then the top horse over a longshot play for $5. Crist encourages the player to structure bets in a manner that will reward them the most when their handicapping is spot on.....not just when they get lucky by throwing every longshot on the borad underneath and exoctic play. Why play four horses equally in a leg of the Pick 4 when you like two of them much more than the other two?
This book, along with Steve Davidowitz's classic, is an excellent read for the intermediate player who wants to learn to take his bet structuring to the next level. My only complaint is that the book wasn't longer....I would love to be able to sit down with Steve Crist and talk betting strategies all day. The only caution that I would give is that this book is not at all about how to pick winners. In fact, this book is not going to be valuable at all to a player who does not possess solid handicapping skills. If you have trouble picking winners to begin with then its probably not a good idea to try and get creative with exotic betting.
VERY READABLE INTRO TO EXOTIC BETTING.......2007-04-20
Steven Crist has been a horse-racing columnist, CEO of the Daily Racing Form and is the author of three other books on horse racing. His latest book, EXOTIC BETTING, attempts to fulfill a need, he explains, to glean more profits from racing through "exotic betting" at a time when shorter horse fields and more information available to savier handicappers has made it harder to make money with "straight bets": win, place and show. In EXOTIC BETTING, Mr. Crist patiently and lucidly lays out the mathematics behind daily doubles, exactas, trifectas, pick threes, etc., the so-called exotic plays. At one time, these bets were exotic when win, place and show predominated. But now, exotic betting is a feature at every racetrack. EXOTIC BETTING focuses on intrarace exotic bets like the exacta and trifecta and interrace exotic bets like the daily double and the pick three. Mr. Christ offers betting strategies for each of the exotic bet types. While I have seen most of these ideas in different places elsewhere, Mr. Christ brings them all together in one reference and explains them in very readable prose. Using the principals presented in the first part of EXOTIC BETTING, he finishes by taking the reader through his actual betting at the 2005 Breeder's Cup. A few more examples of the strategies discussed could have been interesting if not necessary but, all-in-all, this is an excellent book and I highly recommended EXOTIC BETTING for the casual or more serious horse player who wants to be a better exotics player.
Take the "Gamble" Out of Gambling.......2007-04-12
Learn how you can start making a profit at the track with these betting techniques. You'll also find out why it's cost-effective to develop a personal strategy for betting.
Guide to making profits on exotic bets.......2007-03-09
I was very interested in the way Steven Crist shows that developing a strategy for creating exotic bets, with your selections, can be both rewarding and mathemetically cost effective. I am currently using his system to develop wagers for exactas and trifectas without boxing horses. After I have become efficient in winning these bets, I will start wagering on superfectas. My overall goal is to cut my expenses and eventually make a profit at the track. I think this book will help me reach that goal.

Book Description
A groundbreaking collection on currency derivatives, including pricing theory and hedging applications.
"David DeRosa has assembled an outstanding collection of works on foreign exchange derivatives. It surely will become required reading for both students and option traders."-Mark B. Garman President, Financial Engineering Associates, Inc. Emeritus Professor, University of California, Berkeley.
"A comprehensive selection of the major references in currency option pricing."-Nassim Taleb. Senior trading advisor, Paribas Author, Dynamic Hedging: Managing Vanilla and Exotic Options.
"A useful compilation of articles on currency derivatives, going from the essential to the esoteric."-Philippe Jorion Professor of Finance, University of California, Irvine Author, Value at Risk: The New Benchmark for Controlling Market Risk.
Every investment practitioner knows of the enormous impact that the Black-Scholes option pricing model has had on investment and derivatives markets. The success of the theory in understanding options on equity, equity index, and fixed- income markets is common knowledge. Yet, comparatively few professionals are aware that the theory's greatest successes may have been in the derivatives market for foreign exchange. Perhaps this is not surprising because the foreign exchange market is a professional trading arena that is closed virtually to all but institutional participants. Nevertheless, the world's currency markets have proven to be an almost ideal testing and development ground for new derivative instruments.
This book contains many of the most important scientific papers that collectively constitute the core of modern currency derivatives theory. What is remarkable is that each and every one of these papers has found its place in the real world of currency derivatives trading. As such, the contributing authors to this volume can properly claim to have been codevelopers of this new derivatives market, having worked in de facto partnership with the professional traders in the dealing rooms of London, New York, Tokyo, and Singapore.
The articles in this book span the entire currency derivatives field: forward and futures contracts, vanilla currency puts and calls, models for American exercise currency options, options on currencies with bounded exchange rate regimes, currency futures options, the term and strike structure of implied volatility, jump and stochastic volatility option pricing models, barrier options, Asian options, and various sorts of quanto options.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent choice of papers!.......2001-08-18
DeRosa has picked excellent papers. If one reads the papers in detail, the currency derivatives literature, as well as related derivatives literature, becomes very easy to understand.
Comprehensive.......1999-06-19
This book presents highly technical papers on diverse topics from variuous academics. It would be very helpful to anyone looking to understand theoretical aspects of FX derivatives. Since most papers are written by different authors, notation is not consistent. In addition, academics do not always write like Hemingway. Nevertheless, the book covers everyhting from vanillas to exotics very well.
Customer Reviews:
A sincere and genuine effort..........2007-05-05
I give this book 5 stars, because it has so much cultural history in it, because it is a genuine, truly sincere effort, and because it is so vast; it truly has *a lot* of recipes.
The injera recipe is flawed, as are many of the amts. of ingredients called for in recipes.
However, it is a total compendium of many, many dishes, and the spiced oil and butter recipes, as well as all the vegetarian recipes are essential. The author clearly put his heart, life, and culture into it and it shows. I used this book many times in the restaurant I managed for 10 years to recreate these classic dishes.
We have now published our own cookbook, which I'd like to plug here, with 9 of the most basic, "American" Ethiopian classics (vegetarian), which we've served weekly for the better part of a decade at our cafe: Ethiopian-inspired Cooking, Vegetarian Specialties . What can I say: Ethiopian food is amazing... Thank you Jote Mesfin!
Exotic Ethiopian Cooking : Sociey, Culture, Hospitality, and Traditions. Revised Extended Edition. 178 Tested Recipes. With Food.......2007-04-05
The instructions were not always clear. Some of the ingredients were omitted from recipes while others were not completely explained. Perhaps another editing job would be prudent. Otherwise, the food I prepared from this book was absolutely sumptuous and I appreciated the cultural background chapters.

Eh........2007-02-08
As the only Ethiopian cookbook I could find I bought it, even though the other reviews were less than glowing. The history section was the best part of the book, the recipes are indeed vague and not that great. The injera recipe was particularly awful. Now maybe these are far more authentic than the "Americanized" versions I've had in restaurants all these years but considering the people who own and operate these places are from Ethiopia I can't think they're too far off (yes I know McDonald's and Taco Bell are not the best representation of US and Mexican cuisine but I digress) I've had much better luck with the recipes picked up online.
Exotic Ethiopian Cooking.......2006-11-04
The book was in excellent condition and arrived on time. The packaging was excellent.
Hard to understand ... .......2006-09-19
I have owned this cookbook for many years. I love Ethiopian food and eat it whenever I can afford to eat out at my local Ethiopian restaurant.
I also love cookbooks and use them often, both to recreate childhood favorites and to explore new cuisines.
I have, however, never managed to cook anything from this book. I find the instructions confusing and somehow the presentation makes it all seem so daunting.
The cultural and traditional notes are fascinating and easy to read, though.
