The book came in a sealed cover. Although it looks brand new, it does say it is "used". You would never know it. It came in a timely manner and when I followed up w/the seller to see when it shipped, they sent me back an e-mail within a few hours. I would highly recommend using Off Campus Athens again.

Bestselling author Jodi Picoult's The Tenth Circle is a metaphorical journey through Dante's Inferno, told through the eyes of a small Maine family whose hidden demons haunt every aspect of their seemingly peaceful existence. Woven throughout the novel are a series of dramatic illustrations that pay homage to the family's patriarch (comic book artist Daniel Stone), and add a unique twist to this gripping, yet somewhat rhetorical tale.
Trixie Stone is an imaginative, perceptive 14 year old whose life begins to unravel when Jason Underhill, Bethel High's star hockey player, breaks up with her, leaving a void that can only be filled by the blood spilled during shameful self-mutilations in the girls' bathroom. While Trixie's dad Daniel notices his daughter's recent change in demeanor, he turns a blind eye, just as he does to the obvious affair his wife Laura, a college professor, is barely trying to conceal. When Trixie gets raped at a friend's party, Daniel and Laura are forced to deal not only with the consequences of their daughter's physical and emotional trauma, but with their own transgressions as well. For Daniel, that means reflecting on a childhood spent as the only white kid in a native Alaskan village, where isolation and loneliness turned him into a recluse, only to be born again after falling in love with his wife. Laura, who blames her family's unraveling on her selfish affair, must decide how to reconcile her personal desires with her loved ones' needs.
The Tenth Circle is chock full of symbolism and allegory that at times can seem oppresive. Still, Picoult's fans will welcome this skillfully told story of betrayal and its many negative, and positive consequences. --Gisele Toueg
Book Description
Fourteen-year-old Trixie Stone is in love for the first time. She's also the light of her father, Daniel's life -- a straight-A student; a pretty, popular freshman in high school; a girl who's always seen her father as a hero. That is, until her world is turned upside down with a single act of violence. Suddenly everything Trixie has believed about her family -- and herself -- seems to be a lie. Could the boyfriend who once made Trixie wild with happiness have been the one to end her childhood forever? She says that he is, and that is all it takes to make Daniel, a seemingly mild-mannered comic book artist with a secret tumultuous past he has hidden even from his family, venture to hell and back to protect his daughter.
With The Tenth Circle, Jodi Picoult offers her most powerful chronicle yet as she explores the unbreakable bond between parent and child, and questions whether you can reinvent yourself in the course of a lifetime -- or if your mistakes are carried forever.
Download Description
Jodi Picoult, the New York Times bestselling author of Vanishing Acts, offers her most powerful chronicle yet of an American family with a story that probes the unbreakable bond between parent and child -- and the dangerous repercussions of trying to play the hero. Trixie Stone is fourteen years old and in love for the first time. She's also the light of her father's life -- a straight-A student; a freshman in high school who is pretty and popular; a girl who's always looked up to Daniel Stone as a hero. Until, that is, her world is turned upside down with a single act of violence. . . and suddenly everything Trixie has believed about her family -- and herself -- seems to be a lie. The Tenth Circle looks at that delicate moment when a child learns that her parents don't know all of the answers and when being a good parent means letting go of your child. It asks whether you can reinvent yourself in the course of a lifetime or if your mistakes are carried forever -- if life is, as in any good comic book, a struggle to control good and evil, or if good and evil control you.

I'm Glad I Discovered Jodi Picoult.......2007-10-04
So, Jodi has written a ton of books, and I finally got around to reading one... I picked up The Tenth Circle when Amazon recommended it because I liked "We Were the Mulvaneys" by Joyce Carol Oates. Plus the Dante reference really piqued my curiosity. While it dealt with a violent crime and the enduring repercussions (topics Oates often tackles), it was a completely different story and occurred a generation later than Mulvaneys. It was a rollercoaster of emotions that never stalled. The additional graphic novel illustrations were a great supplement. I look forward to reading more of Jodi's books and enjoying her great narrative style.
Unrealistic Characters.......2007-08-30
I have read two books by Jodi Picoult, The Tenth Circle and Nineteen Minutes, and I don't plan to read any more of them. In both books, the characters seem exaggerated to the point of being caricatures. They're just not believable as real people. Also, in both books, there is a plot twist at the end which I found completely out-of-character and unrealistic, with very little explanation given by the author.
Bit Too Melodramatic For My Tastes.......2007-08-29
This is hard for me because as much as I loathed certain aspects of this book, I couldn't put it down. Despite my best efforts, I got sucked in and had to know what happened next. That says something, doesn't it?
Okay, the premise ... turn on Lifetime or an after school special and you'll get the same kind of story. I won't spoil anything about the book, but Picoult managed to throw in every possible trauma a family could go through in an amazingly short span and then make sure we learned our lessons by practically beating us over the head. But, perhaps such escalation of eccentric plot devices was the point. The mother of her main character is a specialist in Dante's Inferno, and so part of me wonders if this story is supposed to mirror the nine levels of hell, but if so, I think it was done rather melodramatically.
One interesting tool used in this book, however, is actual comic book pages "drawn" by the main character's father who is a renowned comic book artist. Shocker, the comic book is called The Tenth Circle as well. At the end of each chapter are components that make up a larger comic book, which parallel the actual story and play off of Dante's Inferno. I'll admit, Picoult had some impressive concepts going in this book; I simply didn't care for her style of execution.
Listen, I know a lot of people really like this book and love Jodi Picoult, and I can't deny the fact that I could not stop reading. I slapped my forehead the whole way through as the plot got more and more outlandish, but I couldn't stop reading. If an author can keep you going even when you don't want to, they're obviously doing something right.
If you're into Picoult, you'll probably dig this. As for me, as good as she was at hooking me, this'll probably be the last book of hers I read. Just a tad too heavy on the family drama and forced "life lessons" for my tastes.
Not great.......2007-08-27
This novel sounds promising, but there were too many things going on with not enough explanation or reasoning - it was hard to be sympathetic to the 14 year old daughter - or to the mother, both of whom made terrible choices - and neither really faced up to the consequences personally (the mother, clearly, had to pay some dues for her crime) - but I didn't feel the characters grew over the course of the book, with the exception of Daniel, and frankly, I didn't believe in his angst. Overall, disappointing.
Love this author, but not this book.......2007-08-25
I've read most of Jodi Picoult's books, and truly appreciate her mastery of characterization. In this one, however, I feel that there was just too much going on. The premise was promising, and the storyline started out to be very engrossing. I found the whole parallel of Dante's circles of hell with what the father was going through to be very clever and interesting. I thought the concept of using cartoons (since the father was a comic artist) interspersed throughout the book was fresh and new. But overall, there was something missing, a link that would somehow pull it all together. Even though the characters were complex and had intriguing backgrounds, I just couldn't connect with any of them, especially Trixie, who was at the heart of the story. Maybe if I could have felt some sympathy for her, there would have been that emotional attachment to a character to help, but instead I felt nothing. Overall, the story seemed too long and drawn-out and then abruptly came to an unsatisfying end. When I turned the last page, I was left with this empty, unsettled feeling. I realize that I'm not going to love every book by a certain author. I commend Picoult for tackling a very difficult and sensitive subject matter, but this definitely was not one of my favorites.

Betty Crocker's Cookbook is 50! In celebration, an updated and expanded ninth edition of this American classic reminds us once again of the value of good old-fashioned comfort food. The original Big Red Cookbook was immediately popular with a postwar audience seeking basic cooking advice and simple recipes that took advantage of several then-new convenience products. The ninth edition remains true to its roots, presenting exemplary instruction, savory mainstream dishes (that still make use of convenience foods and the products of parent company General Mills), and, most notably, standout chapters on baking and dessert specialties. New to this edition, which offers nearly 1,000 recipes, are grilling and vegetarian chapters; up-to-date nutrition information; additional color photos; and contemporary formulas for the likes of Brie with Caramelized Onions, Asiago Bread, and Tandoori Chicken with Chutney.
Instruction was and is the book's strongest suit, and any cook--novice to professional--will benefit from its many how-to features. These include step-by-step directions with photos, tips for kitchen timesaving, and troubleshooting advice. The book also includes several comprehensive glossaries (those on cooking terms and ingredients are particularly good). Standouts among the vast recipe collection, more than 300 of which are designated fast or low fat, include old favorites such as Macaroni and Cheese, Old-Fashioned Baked Beans, and Lemon Chiffon Cake. A few newer ones, such as Sun-Dried Tomato and Olive Bread, also qualify. Published, as ever, in a loose-leaf binder, the book celebrates American culinary know-how, a broad-based tradition of good home cooking, exemplary baking, and the conviction that food and commerce can meld to help people cook easier and eat better. Happy birthday indeed! --Arthur Boehm

One of the ones to read when you're only reading one.......2007-09-23
Betty Crocker Cookbook, 10th edition. It is what it is. It is a decent summary of 21st century American cooking, sufficient to the purposes of anyone who needs to make good meals and keep track of the nutrition involved. With the exception of the occasional (and, frankly, to my mind, unavoidable given the book's corporate affiliation -- I love the stuff myself) use of Bisquick, the book does not lean too heavily on convenience products. There's nutrition information. The selected recipes show a broad base of recipe selection. And at the end of the day, it's all competently done, with lots of useful sidebars and other information.
Beyond that, well, it's underwhelming. To put this in perspective, I have three+ shelves of cookbooks. It's hard for me, a devout cookbook reader for close to two decades, to really offer an objective judgement on something like this, because it's so basic it seems more or less redundant to me. You're not going to find much exotica in here (pad thai and ciabatta bread are about as far-out as it gets), but you will find enough to keep things interesting on a mac-and-cheese table. If you need a basic kitchen reference, it certainly serves that function admirably. There's plenty of pictures for help with techniques, and overall, it's a great first cookbook.
But it's hard to shake the feeling that there's a certain datedness to it -- it is, as I said, very prosaic in its recipe selection. It has the feel of a 1950s cookbook dropped through a timewarp with all of its recipes replaced with currently fashionable selections. What's worse is that it's more or less redundant with books like the Better Homes and Gardens Red Plaid and the America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook -- there isn't a whole lot about any of them to distinguish one from the other. Essentially, you can't go wrong with this book, but you'd be hard-pressed to go wrong with its competition either.
best cookbook.......2007-09-06
I just bought this for my newly married daughter. I think it's the best cookbook ever on the market. Love the ring binder format but can I offer one suggestion? Make it THREE holes instead so that we can add notebook pages to our books. I usually write a recipe on notebook paper and then put a sleeve over it but finding a hole punch is a hassle.
great cookbook and a great price.......2007-08-28
Great cookbook for kids that are going away to college - everything they will need to know to keep from starving.
Betty Crocker Cook Book.......2007-08-28

A home-cooking classic that's stood the test of time.......2007-08-18
{Review of 8th edition, written Jan 2005}
Scoff if you must, but this is one of those rare books that has stood the test of time, for 50 years, endless reprintings, multiple generations of cooks, and (now) 9 editions. I've actually worn out my 8th edition copy, and am planning on buying the new 9th edition.
This is a simple, easy to use, easy to read, well organized, and concisely laid out book, and it's chock full of helpful pictures and step by step instructions for cooks of all levels ... from nervous novices to hardened professionals.
Although by no means encyclopedic in it's depth, it covers a surprising amount of territory in simple and easy to follow detail.
It's earned a berth in the most heavily contested spot for books in my house ... the top of my refrigerator. I have dozens of other books on food and wine elsewhere in my house, but only my 15 most heavily used & dog-eared books have earned a prized berth in my kitchen's "culinary speed rack". High praise.
NITS:
(1) The recommended temperatures in the cooking charts all err on the side of excessive safety, in deference USDA recommendations. Experienced cooks who value flavor and perfect doneness above lockstep homage to USDA regulations (and corporate fears of getting sued) can, IMNSHO, shave 5-10F off most of the listed finishng temperatures for most varieties of meat (particularly red). Modern pork, in particular, is far safer than it used to be, and is routinely overdone by most home cooks. Let experience and additional reading be your guide. {obiwan voiceover: "Use the force, Luke"} Some of the temperature charts are overly convervative, and are heavily weighted towards overdoneness.
(2) The spiral-binding & glossy pages of this book make it spill resistant, and easy to lay open on countertops and bookstands ... but I'd still prefer a hardcover edition, for improved durability. But that's just me.
Book Description
The Celestine Prophecy told of an ancient manuscript found in the rainforests of Peru which contained nine insights predicted to have a profound impact on the future of civilization. Although church and government fought to suppress this information, there were many individuals who risked their lives to spread its message. Now, with millions of people embracing these nine insights, the adventure that began with The Celestine Prophecy continues in the American Southeast where the narrator's friend has disappeared. The book explores the afterlife dimension, sexual energy and the spiritual history of the human race.In it's self-published edition, The Celestine Prophecy sold 100,000 copies, became a word-of-mouth bestseller and received tremendous praise from booksellers. The companion guide, The Celestine Prophecy: An Experiential Guide was a national bestseller, and has nearly 500,000 copies in print after 10 printings. A bestseller on five continents, The Celestine Prophecy has been on numerous bestseller lists. It hit #1 on many lists, including The Toronto Star, Globe Mail, and The New York Times.

Shaggy dog story.......2007-09-16
I really enjoyed the "Celestine Prophecy" so I went ahead and read this follow-up, "The Tenth Insight". I couldn't wait to finish it, because the story seemed to go dull, quick. Too much explainations on topics about the story. If it wern't for the little bit of sense the story made, I would tell anyone looking at this book to "run for the hills".
Explorations.......2007-05-15
The Celestine Prophecy written about ten years ago had a profound effect on my spiritual understanding. Since then I have looked at relationships and energy dynamics in a whole new way. "The Tenth Insight" deepened my insights by allowing me to understand how many of the world's problems can be solved with new spiritual vision.
Lately I had been looking for current inspiration in a book that carried in a tradition similar to James Redfield. I found it in Nexus: A Neo Novel
"The Celestine Prophecy" started the trend in uncovering trends for a new age and crystallized it into a vision. That vision is carried on today in "Nexus" through the journey of people to a spiritual retreat. All of these books together show that we are reaching a greater awareness.
Like "The Celestine Prophecy," "Nexus is also growing among spiritual individuals ready for a message of transformation. Each one of us can share in the spiritual vision present in these books and also tell others about them.
Spiritually we are reaching a critical level and the message found in books by James Redfield and currently in Nexus: A Neo Novel is helping in our spiritual growth.
A Spiritual Adventure.......2007-04-21
James Redfield's The TENTH INSIGHT is a spellbinding Spiritual Adventure filled with suspense and spiritual wisdom.
Redfield captures the true spiritual essence of our life purpose. He has woven a parable into a map for and enlightening spiritual journey.
A truely inspirational book.
If you liked the TENTH INSIGHT then you will also enjoy Nexus: A Neo Novel
The Tenth Insight.......2007-01-28
A great sequel to the Celestine Prophecies. Make sure you read them first to get the full impact of this book.
The Tenth Insight: Holding the Vision.......2007-01-24
I loved the use of parables to engage my attention in reading this book. I can't wait for the movie!

The 101 and X99 level book on Computing.......2007-03-16
I studied this book for my Intro to Computing class and found very interesting. This book covers topics beyond computing namely data communications as well. It also discusses the history or evolution of digital computing, worldwide web, software development processes, hardwares, network types and topologies, cyber crimes, and so many other things. This book is more than enough. It definitely addicts students like me and influences them to choose Info Sys, Info Tech, or Computer Science as their major. I believe this book is suitable for both introductory or survey courses "101" and Independent Learning courses "X99"; simply, this book is well written.

Good content.......2007-03-09
I love this book very much. A lot of goog content about cigar was presented but in plain text and black/white picture.
It can be number one cigar book only if it improves the package such as more color picture, connoiseur's corner.
God like !.......2005-12-12
God like!
Best book all around, lot's of information, piles and mountain of it, no pro or against cigar propaganda, a work of art, and a must read for all cigar fans.
Good for beginners.......2005-05-30
The first half of the book is a really well-written beginners introduction into the world of cigars, their history, making, smoking, storing and other vital knowledge.
The author's an expert, and he' renowned, no doubt about it. That said, I'd appreciated that much more if he would have missed just a single opportunity to ply the reader with that fact.
The second half of the book therefore is rather a description of the self-absorbed world of Richard Carleton Hacker - who I had never heard of before, but now I know he shared a cigar with Arnold Schwarzenegger - and he couldn't help including a photo of that.
That aside: A truly enjoyable read for everybody who is into cigars.
The Ultimate Penultimate.......2004-03-09
This work has been highly overrated, since it is far from being the "ultimate" cigar book.
Firstly, it is no book for an experienced cigar smoker: it covers all of the basics soley for the novice, and only for the American novice, at that ("...our own Connecticut leaf..."). Admittedly, Mr. Hacker does this quite competently, although he either is unaware of myriads of cigar lovers outside the U.S., or has chosen to ignore them.
Secondly, this book would be more aptly entitled "The Ultimate Ego Trip," for the text is riddled with rather annoying examples of the author's unabashed conceit regarding his supposed expertise and his influence on - get this - the Cugan cigar industry!
Worst of all, however, is Mr. Hacker's claim - and in this he aligns himself with his American cigar commentator collegues - that non-Cuban smokes have now equaled, or even surpassed, the quality of Habanos. This absurd pretense - which is unknown amongst any of the scores of non-American cigar veterans I am familiar with - has its roots in the insidious Cuba-bashing campaign initiated by "Cigar Aficionado" magazine, which sought to promote sales of non-Cuban cigars by grossly exaggerating their positive attributes while debasing the quality of Habanos. It is most unfortunate that novice (American) smokers are liable to be influenced by this illusion in their quest for a premium cigar.
My advice, then, is that if you feel compelled to purchase this book, do attempt to separate fact from (Mr. Hacker's) fiction.
Just Buy This One First.......2004-01-20
The title speaks for itself, it is indeed the ultimate cigar
book. Written for the newcomer as well as the long time cigar
aficionado. Perhaps Mr. Carleton Hacker will bless us with
an exclusive book on Cubanos and elaborate on their rich history,
current markets, counterfiting, proper storage and enjoyment.
Go ahead and buy this one first, you won't regret it!!

Great colloction of short stories for Star Trek Voyager fans..........2007-08-16
I enjoyed the stories in this volume some more than others, but overall I thought the entire book was worth adding to my collection and well worth reading. In fact, there are a couple stories that had some real depth to them. I hope to see more collection like this one in the future.
Voyager Roads Not Taken.......2007-06-09
DISTANT SHORES is simply an excellent collection of Voyager stories that span the entire run of the series. The stories focus on previously unexplored plots, based on episodes or events referred to in episodes. And many of them would have made great shows: Kes and Neelix in "Closure", Chakotay and Tuvok in "Command Code", B'Elanna & Kes in "Winds of Change", Chakotay and Janeway in "Isabo's Shirt", as well as stories with former memebers of The Equinox, and the Borg. If there was any disappointment with the book, it is that I wanted more stories!
If you like Voyager, pick up this wonderful book that fills in the spaces between shows.
Voyager Season 7.5.......2007-01-27
Voyager was exasperating. The crew never ran out of fuel, food, or shuttles, the characters never really changed, and there was never any sense of peril, that the characters might die or that Voyager might not make it home. But still, after seven years together I couldn't help feeling a little wistful after the last episode knowing I'd never see those characters again, except in reruns.
Which is why Star Trek Voyager: Distant Shores was such a pleasant companion for a couple of weeks, a collection of 12 short stories each of which reads like a typical television episode. The stories cover all seven seasons and with the exception of Tuvok, all the major characters are featured in at least one story.
The writers in this volume must be great fans themselves. They've succeeded in capturing the essence of the show and the characters, recreating in print what we saw each week on television. Their faithfulness, however, sometimes goes too far and as a result we get ridiculous plot contrivances, such the first season story in which Tuvok withholds the command codes from Chakotay even though the ship is under alien attack and Janeway incapacitated because, well, Tuvok's not really sure if he can trust the former Maquis. There's also the sentimental, ripped-from-a-Harelquin-romance episode in which Chakotay confesses his love to Janeway, and 38 pages of stuporous logs recorded by the doctor while stranded on the planet Tahal (which answers the question of how a being made of light could have a "son.").
The better stories in this collection equal and even outdo the better televised episodes. Harry Kim finally gets the girl, a very special person who teaches him the value of living in the present. At Janeway's suggestion, the crew puts together a talent show, full of wit and humor with a rather sorrowful and touching ending. And perhaps the best episode of all, the story of how Kes and B'Elanna learn to build a windmill and in the process learn something about themselves and each other.
You're sure to find something of interest in Distant Shores, a wonderful volume for anyone who has ever enjoyed Voyager. Even those of us who sometimes couldn't wait for it end.
Perfect for a short attention span.......2007-01-10
Distant Shores is the perfect collection of 'novelettes' by previously-published Star Trek novel authors. Focused around the Voyager cast and crew, with most episodes being placed after the 5th season, it is a mix of stories that (a) further explore the emotional psyche of characters whilst experiencing events already told in the series (e.g. there is a story of how Janeway's ex fiance processed her being 'lost in space' and moving on shortly prior to receiving confirmation that she was still safe and sound); and (b) introduce new storylines around the already established events. Both are enjoyable in their own way, if not a little saccharine-sweet sentimental - but that's just a matter of taste. This bag of mixed lollies certainly has enough variety of sweets to appeal to all tastes. A recommended read for all.
New Appreciation.......2006-08-14
Made me realize how much I miss Star Trek! Voyager was not a favorate of mine, but I guess I was more attached to the charactors then I thought. Want to buy the series and live it again.

In the latest edition of this classic work, Arlene Taylor once again offers a complete, up-to-date, and practical guide to the world of cataloging and classification. Since the publication of the ninth and ninth-revised editions (2000 and 2004), changes have occurred in almost all areas of the organization of information in general, as well as in cataloging and classification. The 10th edition incorporates the 2002 Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition (AACR2), MARC 21, the 22nd edition of Dewey Decimal Classification, current schedules of the LC Classifications, the latest Library of Congress Subject Headings, and the 18th edition of the Sears List of Subject Headings. In addition, Taylor addresses such vital issues as FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records), FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology), and the Semantic Web. The bibliography and glossary have also been substantially reworked. In fact, only the appendix, which covers arrangement dilemmas and filing rules, remains unchanged.

Very good reference for librarians who classify and catalogue different documents.......2006-09-11
This is very comprehensive works for classification and catalogue of documents, including intenet resources. However, one new concept--FRBR and its recently research had hardly reviewed, maybe the author has not enough materials, though this new concept and model had been suggested for eight years. The othor regret is about the classification, the work reviewed detailedly about DDC,LCC,but hardly reviewed about the other classifications, which use languages other than English.I think the researcher in the apoch of Internet should have a global perspective, not just limited in the only one country,or only one language world(eg.English).I hope the next edition can be improved in these respects.
