This book has really grown on me. When I first received it I was a little disappointed thinking it was a little light on content. As I've thought more about planning my own Alaska fishing vacation, I now value the author's pragmatic style. He tells you with detail and precision how to get the most out of a car-based excursion fishing for salmon. From what and how to pack, to specific milepost markers for the best fishing at specific times, to how to get your catch home, it's all there. Be aware that this book is ONLY about car-based fishing and ONLY about fishing for salmon; also many of the areas identified as hotspots are very popular and will be crowded (the author uses the local phrase "combat fishing" to describe such situations).

This book is well organized and provides a great deal of useful information for the first time alaska visitor. The charts are particularly helpful as you travel along the highways. They quickly identify and rate all the major rivers and their salmon runs.

However, there is very little information here that every traveler I met on the highways didn't seem to already know. All the rivers rated as excellent are known by every highway angler in the state and they are all vying for some room at these locations. The best way to discover 'good' fishing locations is from the alaskan neighbors you meet at the campgrounds. So, I feel it's a good get acquainted book. A one trip book. A useful handbook. Keep it on your dashboard.

Colin Fletcher is a self-described "compulsive walker." It is not unusual for him to pick up a map, drive to an area that intrigues him, and then start walking. It should come as no surprise then that a detour from U.S. 66 to visit the Grand Canyon on a June morning in 1963 inspired Fletcher to walk the length of the Canyon below the rim. In The Man Who Walked Through Time Fletcher recounts his amazing journey. For two months Fletcher struggled against heat and cold, lack of water and dwindling supplies. The terrain was, at times, nearly impassible, yet despite the physical hardships, Fletcher came away from his experience with a new awareness of how humans fit into the vast scheme of things. He writes, for example, of meeting a rattlesnake on Beaver Sand Bar: "Now I am no rattlesnake aficionado. The first rattler I met scared me purple, and killing it seemed a human duty.... Yet by the end of that California summer I no longer felt an unreasoning fear of rattlers.... Instead, I accepted them as organisms with a niche in the web of life. Accepted them, that is, as fellow creatures."

The Man Who Walked Through Time is a remarkable account of a journey both physical and spiritual. It is also a record of the Grand Canyon as it was before the massive influx of tourism. Fletcher's descriptions of the spectacular geography, the wildlife, and the remnants of much older cultures serve to remind us that the Grand Canyon has been around longer than humankind and may well outlast us.

Colon Fletcher is a well known backpacker who has written the bible on backpacking (The Complete Walker IV; Alfred A Knopf, New York). On this trip he talks about the planning and preparation for the trip and all the details of the execution of the adventure. He explains the natural history and the geological history of The Grand Canyon at length as he walks the length of it. He may be the first non-native man to do so. Mostly, Fletcher has a honest, smooth, enjoyable style of writing that I find enchanting.
The appendix contains a list of everything he took.
With a little philosophy, a little geology and a story of personal struggle with the task at hand Fletcher conveys something of a understanding of humankind's place in the world. One can ask for nothing more than that!

Had a deep effect on me.......2007-02-19

I read this book in my early 20s, about 40 years ago. I had recently discovered the study of geology, and had camped on the rim of the Grand Canyon several times and hiked the Bright Angel Trail twice. The book had a profound effect on me then, and moved me again when I re-read it recently. This is the record of a man's journey -- physical, psychological and spiritual -- vividly and poetically written. He not only traces his trail through the canyon, but the personal challenges he meets and overcomes on the way, and perhaps more importantly, his gradually deepening experience of the canyon itself, of feeling himself an integral part of it, at one with its immense mystery. In that way, it is a deeply mystical story, as well.

For people who read this book and enjoy it, I'd also recommend Colin Fletcher's more recent book, RIVER, his account of a much more recent trip floating the Colorado River from its source to the sea. Particularly more mature readers will find his identification with the river in its various stages, and the stages of his own life, engrossing.

A VERY INTERESTING AND INSPIRATIONAL READ.......2006-01-05

This well written volume is the story of one man and one trip. I suppose if I took the same journey, my motivation might be quite different and my story, I am sure, would be different. I think you kind of have to take this book as just that, i.e. one mans quest, one mans vision and one mans interpretation of what he saw and what he expierenced. I personally felt inspired by this work and felt as if I were reading the words of a kindred spirit. On the other hand, according to my friends and family, I am a bit of a flake, so take this review for what it is worth. Granted, Fletcher did have good support, but then I don't think he had a particular death wish either. If I could afford it, I would do the same. I do regrete that, as one reviewer pointed out, that the hype for the book could be a bit misleading to the reader. I suppose those that like living on the very edge might find this work a bit prosaic in that no death defying feats were performed, yet I really don't feel that is what this work was all about. I suggest just reading and enjoying it.

Amazing True Adventure.......2005-01-01

This book suceeds on every level and is one of the best adventure books I've read. Much more than a hiking guide, it is an amazingly well-written of a journey more mental than physical, as Colin shares deep insights into life, geology and the history of the Earth as revealed by the Grand Canyon.

Backpackers will appreciate his accurate portrayals of hiking: the mixed emotions before setting of on a long and possible perilous journey, the still moments feeling at one with Nature, the way everyday minutia and worry eventually recedes into the background. If you have friends who want to know what backcountry hiking is all about (without actually going on one), this is the book to read.

Also, for Canyon afficionados (such as myself), Fletcher's book captures the majesty, awe, and grandeur of America's (or at least Arizona's) crown jewel.

Although written in the 1960's, this account does not feel dated. It is very much more than a 'been-there, done-that' journal of a record-setting performance, but instead has much to offer to any reader. Highly recommended.

The book, "The Man Who Walked Through time" by Colin Fletcher is an amazing book about how Colin Fletcher himself attempts to be the first person to walk the length of the canyon. Colin Fletcher really goes into detail about what he was thinking and feeling along the way. Not to say that he never talks about what he actually does, he just includes more about what his mindset was. You would think that a book about a man and his journey's would start out as the boring day 1, day 2, day 3 and day 4, then day 5, but Colin Fletcher throws away this idea and beautify pieces together a flowing natural story. He never bores you with every single detail, but instead talks about the most exiting things. The book "The Man Who Walked Though Time" is meant for any reader interested in the canyon or anyone that would want to follow in Colin's footsteps.

I myself live at the canyon, and when reading about how Colin Fletcher walked the length of the canyons National Park I was awe struck. Later I was relieved to find out that the Grand Canyon National Park boundary was a lot shorter. It was also nerve racking to thinks of how he is going to lug his food around for 3 months, but I was soon to read that he was going to have airplanes drop his food off at certain locations. "That's crazy" I though, "you would have to spend millions of dollars to be able to do that". That is when I learned that Colin Fletcher had walked that canyon in the 60's and back then it must have been inexpensive to have an airplane drop off your food or you had connections.

While I was reading the book, Colin Fletcher was talking about the Rhythm of the rocks and how he needed to connect with the beaver, and "be the beaver" and be one with all of the animals. I literally thought that he was going crazy, that he has been in the canyon way to long and has gone nuts, but then I started to realize what type of mindset he is in. He has been alone for so long in such a beautiful and amazing place. When I start to think about what Colin Fletcher was saying about the rhythm of the rocks and how our time and the canyons time is way different I really admired the way Colin put his thoughts together. It was just beautiful writing, that is all there is to it.

I personally thought that the book was amazingly well written, and like I had said before, the way Colin doesn't use the writing format of what he did every single day. He just points out the main facts about his journey.

The book really inspired me to just go out and walk the Grand Canyons length myself. Since Colin explained that he wasn't the fittest guy in the world it really showed that if you worked hard enough you yourself could walk the Grand Canyon. I can't think of anything that Colin Fletcher left out in his book. I mean sure he left out all the little details, which is good otherwise it would have been horribly slow and dreadful. I have never really read any other books about the canyon so I don't have anything to compare this book to. Don't worry though; I still thought that the book was great.

A very interesting and engaging book!.......2006-12-20

I read this to my 6-year-old, and we were both mesmerized. The story is told exceptionally well. First there is some "action," then some history, then more action. Practical details about rockets and space travel will fascinate kids and adults alike. And after reading this book, no one will forget the meaning of the words, "The Eagle has landed" and "That's one small step...." It sounds silly, but I actually got choked up at the climax (moon landing).
This is a great book for any kid interested in the original development of the space program, up to the first walk on the moon. I can't make a pronouncement about the reading level (maybe third grade?), but you could read it to a 5-year-old, and I think even most adults would like this book. I'm going to be looking for other books by this author.

Moonwalk, The First Trip to the Moon, by Judy Donnelly and Dennis Davidson, was based on the United States Space Program in it's attempt to out do the Russian program. The U. S. wanted to put 2 men on the moon and after numerous tries and a few fatalities the U. S. Space Program succeeded. Apollo 11 was the first rocket to land on the moon. I found this book very exciting. I learned much about how the space program worked and what it took to get to the moon and back again safely. I encourage other young readers to read Moonwalk. It will inspire many readers as it did me to study more about the future of space travel and our space program.

I enjoy reading almost anything about antique autos,the early days of the US auto industry, old car trips and stories about the history of early automobile travel in the United States. This is a wonderful companion to the PBS series video on the first successful United States transcontinental auto trip from California to NYC. Great olde tyme photos and a well presented memoir of the adventure. Of course you cannot "just" read the book...the video is a must!

Amazing document about a time in American history when there were only 150 miles of paved roads in the entire country. In 1903, an adenturous 31 year old Doctor from Vermont, now retired and living happily with his weathy young wife (on her funds), decided he'd attempt to be the first to man cross the continent via the latest technological gadget: the automobile. Being a non-mechanic, he hired an equally spirited 21 year old former bicycle racer who had been working as a mechanic in a gasoline-engine factory in California to accompany him. Most roads were little more than muddy wagon paths, and when those stopped the travellers could only follow along railroad tracks or trust in their sense of direction as they set out across the vast plains and desert. Nevertheless, they made the trek successfully.Equally amazing, his beloved wife condoned his folly and waited anxiously at home. They wrote letters to each other regularly, and these (preserved) letters were the author's primary source of information about his daily successes and frustrations along his cross-country 'expedition'.This book, a companion to the PBS documentary film (available on DVD) is filled with rare vintage photos. Few would attempt such a journey today, even with modern GPS equipped 4x4 vehicles, and the book and DVD are both splendid inspirations for anyone who loves to share in the triumphs of those few individuals who would fearlessly challenge what has never been done simply because they believe they can succeed.I only wish there had been more more detailed excerpts from the original correspondences included in this book. Still, a splendid addition to your library... and your education!

I had it in my head that this was going to be the audio from the wonderful PBS show but I was mistaken. It is a reading of the book. I should've looked more closely. The story, however, is wonderful. The voices from the narrative on the PBS show were more engaging and lively that those on this CD but the story remains just as good.

Brief but fun.......2005-08-03

This is a brief account of the first cross country automobile trip, sprinkled with photographs taken by the "automobilist" as he traversed the nation's dirt roads just after the turn of the last century. Horation Nelson Jackson bet someone $50 in a club in San Francisco that he could cross the country in an automobile he had just bought, and do it in less than 90 days. He spent over $8,000 winning his bet (though he never collected the money).

The car (something called a Winton) had numerous breakdowns. After each one, Jackson would write his wife and advise her that "the worst is over now" after which the car would inevitably break down again. Jackson and his mechanic, Sewall Crocker, spent endless days waiting for parts and jury-rigging parts for the car. After Jackson and Crocker left San Francisco, two other cars, each with its own pair of intrepid motorists, left there also, all three headed to New York City. In spite of a number of hindrances, Jackson's Winton beat out the Packard and the Oldsmobile. Jackson even picked out a dog, named Bud, who wore goggles and rode in the front seat for most of the adventure.

This is a rather short book. It took me perhaps an hour and a half to read. It's full of illustrations and has a map showing the route Jackson took. It's also very interesting, covering a part of American history that I imagine many people had never heard before. I recommend it.

Unabridged Audio CD.......2005-05-30

Having recently read the "Lincoln Highway", I was interested in learning more about the earliest travel across the country by automobile. I opted for the audio CD so we could listen to the story while in the car.

Often, my mind wanders when listening to audio books. However, that wasn't true for this audio book. The story of this historic trip, as well as the narration by various individuals, has retained both my interest and attention.

I would recommend that anyone not familiar with the means of travel at that time and road conditions, become familiar with it before beginning with the audio CD... Next, I plan on watching the video DVD of Horatio's Drive.

A sculptress is born.......2002-05-05

I tell you if I were not in between jobs (gotta save my pennies for the rent) I would have ran out to the nearest art supply store and purchased some "sculpey" clay to begin my new hobby as a sculptor.

That's how easy Dottie Erdmann, the author, makes sculpture look. Erdman, a self-taught sculptor, echoed my sentiments exactly when she explained she had an interest in sculpture but didn't know where to begin. Armed with a little information she had gathered about sculpting she headed to her art supply store to purchase some clay and tools. A sculptress was born.

The book is an easy step-by-step guide complete with black and white photos and drawings. She starts off with super easy small objects: a lemon, followed by an apple, etc. She builds your skills and confidence with the smaller objects while advancing you to the more difficult projects in the book.

The only disappointment I had with the book were the tools she used to put the lines and detail in the clay. I couldn't tell which ones were being used for which project. But, as I read through the book, I began to learn the sculptor developes a feeling (comes with experience - trial and error) for which tool to use to make certain impressions in the clay. Besides that, the book was EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!

Excelllent For Physical/Mental Rehabilitation.......2001-01-12

As a provessional who works with patients who are recovering from physical and mental challenges I found Hands On Sculpting an enormously useful book. It doesn't "talk down" to the patients, but "talks with" them encouraging them to work with their hands and use their creativity while sculpting anything from very, very simple projects to projects of more complexity. The feeling of accomplishment, which builds self-esteem, is magnificent therapy during the recovery period.

Best Lincoln Highway book I've seen.......2007-01-18

This book is an excellent reference for the entire Lincoln Highway. Some of the state-specific books may have more detail, but none are easier to follow. It is very well written- flows easily, lots of good pictures. I wish we had this one when we traveled part of it.

An excellent book about an historic roadway.......2005-09-19

Ever wonder what it would have been like to have driven across the country in the early part of the 20th Century, before roads were regularly paved or well-marked? You can get a glimpse of what early travelers faced on the first transcontinental highway by reading Greetings From The Lincoln Highway by Brian Butko.

The book starts off by telling the history of the Lincoln Highway, from its inception and promotion by Carl Fisher and Henry Joy to its eventual replacement by numbered Federal highways. Most of the remainder of the book describes the route of the old highway going west from New York City to its end in San Francisco. The route is described in great detail, enough for one to use it in driving it today. Throughout the text, there are excerpts from the journals and letters of early travelers of the highway. We drivers of today can be glad we don't have to put up with the conditions they faced.

If you are a fan of the historic roadways; if you want ideas for future vacations; if you want to experience life off of the Interstates -- this book is for you.

Having lived in a city that the Lincoln Highway has passed through for all of my 70 years, I found the book to be a delightful trip down memory lane. The numerous photographs give a wonderful feel for the time when the highway was in its prime and used by millions traveling coast to coast. The book is well laid out and organized and a treat to read, whether you want to browse for a few minutes or do an in-depth read for the couple of hours it would take you to go cover to cover.

A diary of things lost.......2002-03-20

This book will hurt to read. The Eliot Porter photos show what has been lost to our generation by the grossly irresponsible act of damning Glen Canyon. However the book also shows what has been saved in pictures of the Grand Canyon. May we know by our failure at Glen Canyon what to protect, and why, in the future.

Powell's own narrative, of course, forms the main written portion of the book, and its direct, yet eloquent, writings should remain a strong part of the story of what it is to be an American. Equal parts dry text and awed wonder, it is a must read.
