5 out of 5 stars A Mighty Fine Read.......2007-06-28

If you're going down this Trail or even part of it, you'll want to read this little gem and take it with you for interesting info, tidbits and route directions. Two other wonderful Trail books are: Walking the Trail, One Man's Jounrey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears, in which the author WALKS the 900 mile route of the Trail of Tears (by Jerry Ellis) and On the Trail of the Pony Express (by Jerry Ellis.) Walking the Trail was nominated for a Pulitzer.

This is an excellent book if you are planning to drive the trail. It lays out a daily schedule with places of interest, miles to next stop, and how long it should take you. I was very happy with the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Our Bible for traveling the Lewis & Clark trail.......2005-01-21

Traveling The Lewis And Clark Trail served as our family "bible" for retracing the Lewis and Clark trail (July 2004). While we had several guidebooks, we constantly asked "What does Julie say ... ?" Her recommended itinerary was very useful and served as the starting point for our planning. Overall, we found it very clear and accurate. While the book does not focus on "roughing it," we were especially pleased with the coverage of camping and hiking options along the trail.

We enjoyed having Julie along. (She was voted honorary member of the family.)

With Julie and a copy of Lewis and Clark's journals, you'll be ready for your own Journey of Discovery.

Now in an expanded and updated bicentennial edition, Traveling The Lewis And Clark Trail by travel author Julie Fanselow is an invaluable and "user friendly" resource that modern-day enthusiasts can use to retrace the route of the two famous early American explorers commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson after acquiring the Louisiana Purchase from the French. Filled with from cover to cover with authoritative information concerning activities, attractions, recommended itineraries, maps, black-and-white photographs, and more, Traveling The Lewis And Clark Trail is a comprehensive and enthusiastically recommended guide for any vacationer seeking to retrace footsteps of Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and their companions.

As others have noted, a well researched and well organized guide. There's now a competing publication endorsed by Stephen Ambrose, whose book "Undaunted Courage" sparked renewed national interest in Lewis and Clark. After browsing that one, published by Montana Magazine in a magazine format, I can report that 1) it has advertising, and 2) it omits details found in Julie Fanselow's book. Stick with Julie.

I do hope she has an updated edition in the works for the upcoming Lewis and Clark bicentennial. A few points of information need to be added or changed to keep pace with developments. For instance: starting in 2003, access to the Lolo Motorway, the L&C route from Montana to Idaho, will be by permit only.

Book Description

Few events in American history have shaped the nation like the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It opened the American West for settlement. It redrew the map of the United States. It identified an array of native peoples, spectacular places, fascinating creatures, and extraordinary flora unknown in "civilized" America. It defined the American nation as a land stretching from coast to coast-and it launched the spread of population in a mighty frontier migration unlike anything ever witnessed in America before or since.

Lewis and Clark on the Trail of Discovery contains 19 chapters, detailing the expedition chronologically. A "museum in a book," this fascinating volume contains re-creations of original documents such as diary entries, letters, maps, and sketches-all meticulously reproduced so that the reader can actually handle and examine them.

Among the documents included in the book are:

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic book, and great value.......2007-06-06

Much has been written, let it simply be said this is the type of book you can pick up for ten minutes and learn something new and fascinating. The pop-outs and pull-out copies of historical documents is wonderful. I've stumbled on it at a retail outlet and have since bought several more as gifts. A good investment for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for All Ages..........2005-09-16

I purchased this book for my daughter after we visited Fort Clatsop, Oregon where The Lewis and Clark Expedition settled for the winter. My daughter is ten years old and absolutely loves the interative features of the book, such as the replicas of the maps and journal entries from the expedition. The book was such a hit for my daughter's birthday that my parent's ordered the book and a little girl at the party ordered one also.
The replica maps and writings are a little hard to read as the writing 100 years ago has evolved to what we have now. But helping your child interpret these readings makes this book a true family book.

5 out of 5 stars A Book that is like a museum!.......2005-01-28

This is a very fun book to read. It has many pockets that contain maps, receipts, and letters that look and feel like the real artifacts. One gets the feeling of history looking through these things. It is appropriate for young people, and adults. It is not a book to read though for the "details" however. I highly recommend this book to school libraries or young people with an interest in Lewis and Clark history. For details of the expedition look at Undaunted Courage, and/or Moulton's book.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to believe--Only 200 years ago!.......2004-11-21

Keeping history in perspective is important. What is 200 years?I am creeping on to 70 and my father was born in 1891.So,it was only 85 years before my father was born that Lewis and Clark completed their journey.Another way to look at it is that Clark died in 1866 only 25 years before my father's birth. Not really all that long ago, when you think of all that has happened in that short time.
This is a very unique book, only 48 pages;but a real excellent effort.Scattered throughout the book are over a dozen packets containing authentic looking reproductions of maps, letters and other documents that were prepared along the trip. It's almost like handling museum documents. Also included are many excellent paintings of scenes along the journey as well as sketches, maps and photographs of important items used. The paper, printing and overall construction of the book is superior in every way.At the back of the book there is a wealth of source material covering, acknowledgements, credits, notes and transcriptions.
All in all,a first class book on the Lewis and Clark Journey that shaped America.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Teaching Tool!.......2004-03-26

This is a wonderful source of material and has been most beneficial as a teaching tool for my middle school students as we study the Lewis and Clark journey to explore the Louisiana Purchase.
The pull outs are excellent and help students to really connect with Lewis and Clark as "real" people.
A wonderful addition to any educator's collection!

Lewis and Clark Road Trips is an absolutely gorgeous compendium of information, maps and sidebars on the explorers' routes and what to see on the way.

Author Kira Gale and her husband traveled more than 8,000 miles on the Lewis and Clark Trail in preparation for this oversize, full-color book, and the result is an incredibly detailed look at every mile of the Trail. The book is divided into regions, including (1) East of the Alleghenies (2) Pittsburgh to Cincinnati (3) Louisville to Wood River Camp (4) St Louis to Kansas City (5) Nebraska and Iowa (6) South Dakota and North Dakota (7) Montana to the Rockies (8) Western Montana and Idaho (9) Washington and Oregon (10) and New Orleans andthe Natchez Trace. The author has also set up a Web site with a companion Trip Planner with individual maps, a newsletter and a blog on the Trail.

This lovely book will inspire many a trip through time and history and will intrigue American history buffs, modern-day explorers and especially RVers in search of a theme for this summer's vacation.

For anyone wishing to visit historic locations along the trail of Lewis and Clark's expedition, this is the best summary you can find. Tom Schmidt does an excellent job of collecting information from the Lewis and Clark Journals and relating this all to the sites we can all visit along the trail.

4 out of 5 stars Great companion to "Along the Trail with Lewis and Clark".......1998-10-09

Done in great National Geo style, with stunning photos, this is a great "pocket" guide to the Lewis and Clark Trail. However, with it's lack of maps, it needs to be used in concert with larger, more detailed guides, such as "Along the Trail with Lewis and Clark" by Barbara Fifer, et al. If you are among the many contemplating hitting the Trail, this book will come in handy.

Book Description

THE LOLO TRAIL: A HISTORY AND GUIDE TO THE TRAIL OF LEWIS AND CLARK by Ralph S. Space (second edition) has a preface by Stephen Ambrose, in which he calls the author "the expert on the Lolo Trail. (Ralph Space) lived and breathed the Lolo Trail and with this book he has left us with a superb history but also a practical guide that's very useful for visitors who may want to discover the Trail during the Bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition." Ralph Space describes each day's drama during Lewis and Clark's odysseys on The Lolo Trail in 1805 and 1806. He analyzes Lewis and Clark's decisions with the crisp authority of someone who has lived his whole life in the headwaters of the Columbia River. Space also tells about the Native Americans who used this ancestral route to the buffalo, the trappers and traders who successfully adapted to this place, and the adventures of the U.S. Forest Service rangers in this wild and unforgiving country. THE LOLO TRAIL is als! o a guide to this rugged geography, so much of which is unchanged from the day of the Corps of Discovery.

4 out of 5 stars Essential for travelers of the Lolo Trail.......2005-08-08

I recently returned from traveling the Lolo Trail. Having read this book just prior to my trip, and having it with me during the trip for reference made the entire excursion a great experience. This book is not for everyone. But no one should travel the Lolo Trail without it.

I bought the book as a reference to historical information about the Nez Perce and Lewis and Clark sites on the trail. It was very satisfactory in this regard. But the best parts of the book were actually some of the stories of other, more recent, events that have occurred in this area.

      Book Description

In 1804 Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were sent
by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the largely uncharted western territory of North America, and thus became critical figures in America's expansion and major contributors to its scientific
scholarship. They observed and documented scores of animals, including the Great Plains wolf, mule deer, prairie dogs, grizzly bears, and salmon. Several species and subspecies of mammals, birds, and fish previously unknown to science were recorded for the first time; the information gathered would serve as the basis of scientific study for years to come.
Collected here are stunning photographs by William Muñoz that catalog the diverse array of wildlife witnessed by Lewis and Clark. Nature lovers and history buffs alike will be intrigued by this unusual account of the journey, whose bicentennial will soon be
celebrated. Route maps, suggestions for further reading, chronology of
      animals sighted, index.

        Book Description

When the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 added a vast and unmapped wilderness area to the fledgling United States, President Thomas Jefferson persuaded Congress to fund a "Corps of Discovery" to explore these lands, and he picked a young man by the name of Meriwether Lewis to lead the way. Lewis and his co-command, Captain William Clark, kept journals of the expedition, and what they found amazed the world: three hundred new species of plants and animals, as well as wilderness prairie and mountains previously undescribed.
This book is the first guide to contemporary recreational adventures along the route of America's most famous pioneer expedition. It includes abundant natural history, as well as profiles of the many state and national parks to be found in Lewis and Clark country. Author Elizabeth Grossman divides the trail into six sections and recommends ten "explorations" in each, along with many side trips. She offers suggestions for the best day hiking, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, biking, and wildlife viewing--as well as short, easy walks and car trips to interpretive centers, Native American villages, and scenic vistas. Information on the Corps of Discovery's original campsites is also included, along with excerpts from Lewis and Clark's journals. Though much of the wild lands described in the journals is now gone, travelers can still recognize some of the terrain from these two hundred-year-old descriptions.
The present-day adventurer along the Lewis and Clark Trail will doubtless feel a powerful connection with the remaining natural glories that bridge the time from then to now, and will appreciate the opportunity to see this land through the lens of its dramatic history.

What a wonderful piece of work! The photographs are stunning and the narrative both informative and interesting. I recently read "From Sea to Shining Sea" a historical novel about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and enjoyed it very much. When I saw this book advertised, I knew it was a "must see". The foresight of Jefferson in purchasing the land West of the Mississippi River was a stroke of genius and is what made our nation the size it is today. This is the best coffeetable book I've ever seen and is one that will be read and enjoyed for years to come. Congratulations to the authors.....a beautiful and fantastic work of art. I've reviewed books for Heritage Books, Inc. of Baltimore, MD, for many years and enjoyed reviewing this one as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Feast for Your Eyes and a Treasure Trove of Facts........2007-02-09

This is one of the best books I have seen and read in a very long time. The history of the Lewis & Clark Expedition comes alive within the pages of this book.
The ultimate beauty of the aerial shots of the landscape photographs takes your breath away. You are surprised at the untamed beauty of our vast country that most Americans seldom see. These photographs capture your heart and you are in awe at the challenge that the Corp of Discovery undertook and accomplished so many years ago.
The narrative keeps you fascinated with the various types of people the ground crew met while following the trail of Lewis & Clark. Through their eyes we are allowed to see how people today live and how their lives are shaped by the geography of the area.
This book is a feast for your eyes and a treasure trove of interesting facts. It is a book everyone interested in our country should see and read. Geographers, historians, and teachers should use this book in their classrooms.
The authors have done much more than journey in the footsteps of Lewis & Clark, they have touched the hearts of those who have read their book. My sincere congratulations to the authors for taking a 21st century aviation adventure and showing us the beauty of our country. This is a must have, must see and read book that you will return to time after time.

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful photography.......2007-02-08

The photography in this book is really amazing! I have never seen so many different aspects of America done so well. I could almost feel like I was in the plane. I was interested in the book to learn more about Lewis and Clark. I found myself going back again and again to study the photos. A lovely book I like to leave out to look at again and again.

Two hundred years ago The Corps of Discovery set out to explore the uncharted West. To mark the bicentennial of this epic journey, Ron Lowery determined to retrace their trail from the air.

The Corps was led by Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Over a four year period this assignment took the Corps thousands of miles through flatlands, moutains, and rivers that no American had traveled before.

After studying the journals of Lewis and Clark, and doing extensive research studying the photographic possibilities and the topography of the proposed flight, Ron concluded it was feasible.

He recruited co-pilot and co-author, Mary Walker, and a ground crew of four to begin "Chasing Lewis & Clark Across America." The incredible photos Ron captured of the grandeur of America during their three month adventure are published in this book.

Ron's airplane the "Cloud Chaser" is an experimental aircraft made from a kit. It was originally designed for a National Geographic project in Africa's Congo. The design fit perfectly into Ron's plans for aerial photography.

Breath taking views, spectacular country, contrasts of colors, and a voyage of discovery are all word pictures that inadequately describe the photos displayed in the pages of this amazing book.

Mary Walker expresses an experience this way: "The air is cold and pure, and we are alone in this high realm of austere, timeless beauty. We stay as long as we dare...Ron wants to capture the backlit haze gathering in the valleys as the sun slips down. It's been a magical evening at the top of the world."

Whether your interest is in history, aviation, photography, travel, or adventure, you will enjoy your ride in Ron's "flying canoe."

It's not often a 'picture' book sticks with me for very long. Most photography books I read leave a mild impression that slides away very quickly. This book is more than simply a work of photography with a few words thrown in; it's truly a work of art. It's a piece of art that has left a lasting impression on me, and is a book I will enjoy for years to come.

In June 2003, a motley crew set off from St. Charles, Missouri with a mission: Photograph the route that Lewis and Clark famously took on the expedition to find the headwaters of the mighty Missouri River, and the Pacific Ocean. Ron Lowery and Mary Walker manned the ultra-light plane, the 'Cloud Chaser'. Ron's wife and son, Sue and Ryan, and the family dog, filed into the RV used for the adventure. They left from St. Charles on a 3 month, 14,000 mile adventure, and documented the resulting photographs and stories for the enjoyment of those of us who can only dream of such an adventure.

The photographs are stunning, and very well taken. No surprise, as Ron Lowery is a professional photographer, who works have been used by Kodak, IBM, CBS, Smith Kline Beecham, Telecom Italia and other corporations worldwide. A few pictures in particular stick with me. A photo of cherry orchards in various stages of development. It looks as if the orchard belongs in a model railroad, and it's an amazing photo. Another is a photo of cottonwoods in the early morning fog. The fog casts a haunting shadow over the ground, and it could never have been spotted from the ground. Haystack Rock along the Oregon coast. Cannon Beach, where Haystack Rock is located, has been one of my favorite spots for as long as I can remember, and the photo brings a new perspective to the ocean. The colors of the tossing waves along with the cragginess of the rock stand in stark contrast to the small Bed and Breakfasts along the coast line.

The writing is flawless as well. Mary Walker is also a highly experienced professional, who has worked as a chemist, founded a magazine, and is a private pilot. She brings life to the photos, the thousand words the photo tells. The book would be only a photo album, but with Mary's words, it becomes a piece of art.

The book is not all serious, either. One of my favorite experiences that were related in the book was a short piece by Mr. Lowery. He tells of a time he landed at a small airport where no one was in site. He spotted the lone caretaker fiddling with his running lawnmower. Mr. Lowery tapped the gentleman on the shoulder; the man jumped up, dropped his screwdriver and yelled "Please don't kill me!" Needless to say, the men got along well after they both recovered, Mr. Lowery from laughing, and the gentleman from fright. I'm still smiling at the remembrance of this!

All around, I feel this book reaches every goal Mr. Lowery and Ms. Walker set out to accomplish. It had gorgeous photography, excellent history and background descriptions, well written prose, and even a bit of humor infused into the mix. This is the one coffee table book you will keep at the top of your pile, to read and enjoy for years to come.
