A MUST READ!!!!.......2007-08-16
Get out the highlighter and post its if you have a college bound child is high school. This is the best book I've read on the grueling process of college admission. It is specific in it's suggestions for every type of student.
The "Helicopter Parent" Guide to College Admissions.......2007-07-05
This book is right up the alley for all those helicopter parental micromanagers out there in cyberspace. If you are one then great, this is the book for you. If you are a student, pass on it as it speaks to only the parent. There are much better student guides out there than this. The book speaks to what active role(s) the parent should take to help get their child into the right college. I bought it thinking it would be a great guide for students and parents alike. It is not. It is a guide for omnipresent, low hovering, fueled up Moms and Dads. Good luck kids! May you find out who you truly are at the campus of your dreams - hopefully far away from your "life coaches".
Read this book before applying for college.......2007-05-13
The best thing about this book is that it tells you what colleges NOT to apply to. It shows you how to match your GPA/SAT scores with colleges that are looking for students in that range. If your GPA is 3.2 and you want to go to Stanford, you are not going to get accepted so don't waste your time, emotions and money applying there. Look for colleges who take 3.2 GPA students. It also cautions you against applying to schools whose GPA range is way lower than yours. The authors suggest that you will be bored in such a school.
Must Read for Parents of High Schoolers.......2007-04-26
Great book. We learned a number of admissions tips and strategies that helped our son get into college.
We will certainly hold on to the book and reference it when our sophomore starts filling out her applications.
why this book isnot satisfactory.......2007-04-17
Although this book has some valuable insights - how to interview with colleges, how to set up a timetable for your college admission work( which other books have covered quite competently ),it also has some glaring inaccuracies - its section on SAT Is and ACTs is uninformed and inaccurate. It presents SAT I's as offering a 1600 score when the current SAT I is scored on the basis of 2400. Consequently, the SAT I and ACT tables are completely irrelevant. The differences between the ACT and the SAT I are inadequately and erroneously described and so are not helpful to students who are considering which test to take. This book could not be "new" rules of college admission.
Book Description
A ten-minute play is a streak of theatrical lightning. It doesn't last long, but its power can stand your hair on end. This splendid anthology contains enough wattage to light up a small city. For in its pages, thirty-two of our finest playwrights hone their skills on a form that has been called the haiku of the American stage. The plays that Nina Shengold and Eric Lane have collected in this volume range from monologues to an eight-character farce. Eminently producible, ideally suited for the classroom and audition,
Take Ten is a marvelous resource for teachers and students of drama, as well as a stimulating read for lovers of the theatre. Contributors include: John Augustine, Cathy Celesia, Laura Cunningham, Joe Pintauro, Mary Sue Price, Megan Terry, Jose Rivera, Romulus Linney, David Mamet, Jane Martin, David Ives, and many others.

disappointed.......2007-03-13
Unfortunately, I ordered both of the "Ten-Minute Plays" within days. Should have waited to read one first. These plays are not appropriate for all age groups and situations. I was especially interested in finding a few plays for very Senior Citizens in rest homes. Sorry, not one of the plays in either book were appropriate for that audience. Not the books fault just wish better information was available before purchasing. Plays are good for modern audience and younger actors (in my opinion 16+).
Take This Collection.......2006-07-02
If you are only going to own one collection of 10-minute plays, this is the one to own. The choices are well written, show variety, and are infinitely produceable in small spaces.
Some solid pieces.......2006-02-21
Found the compilation to be useful overall. Lot's of varied story tones.
Several good plays.......2005-09-24
I bought this book becuase I am a forensics coach. This book has several wonderful plays that can be used in the forensics competition. There are several possible duets in this piece. I have taken some of them out on the circuit and they have done very well. The plays in this book play to a variety of themes and audiences.
Some have language or character problems that are too mature for high school, but would be good for community theater.
Great for Students and Teachers.......2004-11-15
This collection is a great resource for students who need to direct or just want to do a different 10-minute play. This is really one of the better collections out there. It is also a very diverse collection providing plays and scenes that work well in most situations. Nina Shengold's collections are always high quality and this one does not disappoint. If you are a student or faculty member add this book to your collection, you will be glad you did.
Book Description
A ten-minute play is a blaze of theatrical energy. In this follow-up to their groundbreaking collection
Take Ten, editors Eric Lane and Nina Shengold have put together a veritable bonfire of talent.
Take Ten II: More 10-Minute Plays provides a fast-track tour of the current theatrical landscape, from the slapstick ingenuity of David Ives’ Arabian Nights to the searing tension of Diana Son’s 9/11 drama The Moon, Please, to Susan Miller’s luminous fable The Grand Design. This remarkably diverse anthology includes thirty-five short plays by such major American playwrights as Christopher Durang, Warren Leight, Romulus Linney and Donald Margulies, alongside a host of exciting new voices.
Actors, directors, producers and teachers will find
Take Ten II an invaluable source of meaty roles for people of every age, ethnicity and gender; lovers of theatre will find it a richly satisfying read. These deceptively short plays throb with life in all its variety: harrowing, hilarious, and breathtakingly vital.

A superb gathering of "miniature worlds".......2005-11-23
"Take Ten II: More Ten-Minute Plays," edited by Eric Lane and Nina Shengold, is a follow-up to the co-editors' earlier anthology of very short plays. In addition to the thirty-five plays, the book contains an introduction by the co-editors, some biographical notes on the contributing playwrights, and an index breaking the included plays down into six categories, from one-character play to six or more characters. Interestingly, the most represented category in the book is the two-character play, with fifteen selections.
Lane and Shengold have not just assembled an anthology; they are on a mission to champion the ten-minute play as a distinctive and vital genre with its own rich history. In their introduction, they note that it's been "just over twenty-five years since the Actors Theatre of Louisville announced its first Ten-Minute Play Contest," and in their acknowledgements section they note further, "The number of theatres around the country producing annual ten-minute play festivals continues to grow." A simple Internet search revealed to me how accurate the co-editors are in their assessment of the strength of this genre.
Lane and Shengold promise "a crash course in the depth and diversity of the American theatre" in this anthology, and they more than fulfill this bold claim. Some of the most striking selections are as follows: "Antigone's Red," by Chiori Miyagawa, looks at the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. "Classyass," by Caleen Sinnette Jennings, is a comedy set at a college radio station. "The Cure," by Romulus Linney, is a one-character monologue told by a mountain midwife.
Also worthy of note: "Daniel on a Thursday," by Garth Wingfield, is a two-character encounter set in a gay bar. I really enjoyed Nina Shengold's "Emotional Baggage," a clever comedy in which actors play pieces of unclaimed baggage at an airport. "It's Not You," by Craig Pospisil," is an unsettling satire about friendship and choices set in a New York City subway car. Dael Orlandersmith's "My Red Hand, My Black Hand" is an exploration of biracial Black/American Indian identity that has dialogue written as poetry. Rich Orloff's "Playwriting 101: The Rooftop Lesson" is a deliciously absurdist piece about the art of writing a play. "The Sniper," by Anthony David and Elaine Romero, is a gripping drama about the relationship between an Israeli military sniper and a Moroccan journalist.
I found this superb anthology hard to put down. Lane and Shengold note that the best examples of the ten-minute play genre function as "miniature worlds." In this collection they have assembled a truly diverse and rewarding group of these little worlds. This book is a perfect companion for the original "Take Ten"; I recommend both anthologies enthusiastically.
TERRIFIC!!.......2004-12-17
What a terrific collection! I loved the editors' book UNDER 30, and this one is also great. It's filled with 10-minute plays which are fun to perform in class or on an evening of short plays. Our small theater company produced 7 of them in an evening of one-acts and it was a total hit. And what's best is they cover such a wide range of styles -- from hilariously funny to deeply moving. It's an actor's dream. I've read many collections of its kind and this one is definitely the best!
Book Description
An easygoing, storytelling style makes this offering from Tiger Woods's high school coach a delight. Tiger Woods Made Me Look Like a Genius weaves Don Crosby's golfing techniques into the story of coaching the champion and how Woods's own methods meshed with and enhanced Crosby's approach. Coach Don Crosby has only a 12-week season to turn ragtag teenage duffers into championship contenders. With no time to waste, he focuses on five basics that can take ten strokes off anyone's score: The Practice Range-good for two shots off your game The Short Game-the surest way to lower your score is to chip away at it Putting-imagine no three-putt greens Course Management-a course you know is two shots easier than one you don't Stats-you can't get better unless you know how you're doing Tiger Woods Made Me Look Like a Genius is a handbook of Crosby's golfing techniques and strategies, sprinkled liberally with his personal recollections and anecdotes of the good old days when he coached the young Tiger. The stories, "Crosby's True Tales," bring the mechanics of golf to life, illustrating how these five techniques work and what to expect from them, while offering an intimate look at the evolution of champion Tiger Woods. The book also features an insert with photographs and memorabilia from these special days of coaching.
Customer Reviews:
A good common-sense approach..........2005-11-29
If you're looking for a book crammed with technical info on the golf swing, look elsewhere, Crosby's perspective is that of a high-school coach, who only gets his players for a few hours a week for 5 months, and has to get them winning matches fast. Unlike a pro, he has no interest in selling new clubs or more lessons.
He has a common-sense writing style. He stresses the importance of the Practice Range, short game, putting, knowing the course and keeping stats, all based on making the best of the swing you have.
Quite a few Tiger anecdotes of course, including high-school photos and match scorecards.
Tiger Woods Made Me Look Great.......2005-07-07
This is one of the best golf books written on basic imformation.
I believe this would be imformative to all golfers, beginners or low handicappers.
Great advice for the weekend golfer.......2003-02-06
Crosby's book has lots of good tips on improving your game for beginners, occasional players, or those who don't like to practice (99% of us). He also, which a lot authors miss, explains in terms usuable regardless if you are left or right handed. I especially like the section on keeping stats; even after a couple of rounds, I could see immediately which areas I needed to work on. Only quibble is the book has a little too much Tiger (the photos in the middle of the book add nothing). Wish I could have given it a 4.5.
Time to throw out all of my 300 golf books and keep this one.......2000-06-15
A very sensible approach to cutting your handicap! The author maintains that he only has 3 months to develop a winning team; and he can't screw with swing planes etc. He needs to improve the teams scores. He lays out the strategy nicely.
Best $ I ever spent on a golf Book!
Happily Surprised.......2000-04-28
When I spotted this book in the bookstore I cynically thought "Here is Tiger Wood's high school coach trying to make a few bucks off of Tiger's name when we all know that Tieger was an outstanding golfer before he entered high school." I bought the book anyway and now I'm glad I did. This book gives the average golfer practical advice on how to practice, keep statistics, etc. It is totally different than any other golf book I have read. I have followed the practice routine outlined by the author for two weeks and have already noticed an improvement. After reading this book I am excited about my golf game because I know I am going to improve. The book is also sprinkled with Tiger anecdotes which illustrate points the author is making. I'm so happy that I saw past my original cynicism and purchased this book. Mr. Crosby, thanks for a great book.
Book Description
The planet is in trouble. Global warming, record-breaking natural disasters, 9/11, two hotly contested presidential elections, and a war abroad has left many Americans feeling uneasy with the state of our own lives and the security of the planet. We know that life cannot be sustained at the current rate of consumption, yet it is easy to succumb to helplessness and apathy. But if making a difference only required ten minutes of our time a day, how many more people would try to make a difference?
Written in an edgy, engaging style, The Ten Minute Activist, shows how even the busiest person can make a difference. From buying organic milk and bison to switching from free-trade to fair trade; from choosing a Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) retirement plan to car-pooling with colleagues, The Mission Collective has compiled the most up-to-date information on energy conservation, global warming, wildlife preservation, community building, spiritual awareness and political action. The Ten Minute Activist informs and inspires with easy acts that can truly have an impact if engaged en masse.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book .......2007-09-05
This book should be highlighted everywhere in terms of the great and easy ways it inspires one to take back the planet.
Lloyd Dangle has another great book out called "Troubletown Told You So: Comics that Could've Saved Us From this Mess" on Amazon and his illustrations in both books are compelling.
Ten Minute Activist Provides Easy Ideas and Motivation to Improve Planet and Personal Life.......2007-03-07
This book should go a long way towards getting young people interested in doing small things to help our planet. Historically the young have played a vital role in waking our society up to the changes we need to make, but this current young generation seems to be napping. This book is a fun way to wake them up.
My only criticism is that the writers reveal possibly too much of a Mission (the lefty, counterculture SF neighborhood) bias in focusing repeatedly on certain left-wing crusades while failing to criticize other serious, globe damaging habits that strike a bit too close to home. For example, they focus on buying only fair trade coffee and chocolate, because the mainstream versions of both of those products are exploitative, yet they make no mention of the serious trouble and oppression inflicted on many developing countries, not to mention our own communities, by the illegal trade in crystal meth, heroin and cocaine, all of which find many buyers in The Mission. With a less controversial drug like marihuana, perhaps they could have given tips on assuring that consumers assure that their sources are small time, personal growers and not in any way engaged in violence or the trade of more damaging and addictive drugs.
The important point is The Mission Collective has written an entertainingly accessible book full of relatively easy ways to improve our planet. It is sure to play to a younger, politically interested audience, and may motivate the next generation to take action. The illustrations fit perfectly. Each chapter is short and sweet. And every reader should walk away with at least a handful of ideas to make their lives and our planet a little more livable. Great job!

A very good story.......2002-12-13
The story was a interesting story. The setting of the story was a few years ago in the Louisiana swamps. The main characters in the book were Captain Thunder, Shane and Cochran..My favorite pat of the book was when the captain was telling Cochran a scary story and then the crocodile tried to bite the captain and Cochran. I would recommend this book to younger children 7-10 because the book is not very long, it just has around 60 pages, that's why it's good for older children.
Swamp Furies a review by Matt Walsh.......2000-07-18
I would recommend this book to any young child, although it naturally wouldn't spark the imagination of older readers. A young child would like because it is fun and fast paced and the fun never lets up. An example is in chapter 7 when Robbie wanders off and Shane has to find him. "As Shane reached the marsh, a low growl startled him. He was staring at a small wildcat. Once again Shane's blood ran cold." They would just like to read it. Another exiting part is when the alligator gets on the boat. "The alligators mouth was wide open". Older audiences would prefer it for young people. Older readers prefer thick books.
