The fifth volume in Fantagraphics Books' Complete Peanuts series welcomes a new character: Sally, Charlie Brown's baby sister. It's interesting to see how the perpetually beleaguered CB--criticized for having a "face" face or a "failure face--now takes on the responsibility of worrying about the world his sister will grow up in. His role as manager of the baseball team continues to bring him woe, losing 600-0, losing all 20 games of the season, making a daring attempt to steal home, and having to miss a game to push his sister's stroller. Linus, at first wondering if Sally will someday go out with him, gets his answer in spades: "Isn't he the cutest thing?" But he'd much rather lavish his attention on the new teacher, Miss Othmar ("I'm very fond of the ground on which she walks"), even if his eggshell project doesn't work out as planned. Snoopy, though threatened by a hanging icicle and a possible freeway through his home, still finds joy in being a gopher, the Big Man on Campus, or the Mad Punter. "Peanuts" was well into its classic years in the 1959-60 period, with such signature moments as "Happiness is a warm puppy" and a lot of material that would become familiar staples of the Christmas and Halloween television specials. --David Horiuchi
By 1961-62, "Peanuts" was truly the comic strip that we all still know and love, with situations and sayings that would cement its place as one of the most memorable literary creations of all time. Linus is firmly center stage, and if not for baseball would probably eclipse Charlie Brown in status. His efforts to defend his blanket are legendary (Lucy buries it and turns it into a kite), he gets glasses, and his favorite teacher, Miss Othmar (now known as Mrs. Hagemeyer) returns, which leads to some consternation when he (1) learns that she's accepting money to teach and (2) tells her he'll give up his blanket if she gives up biting her fingernails. There's a new character, Frieda with the naturally curly hair, and her floppy cat strikes terror throughout the neighborhood. Oh, about that baseball team. Everyone quits when Schroeder gives up baseball for Beethoven (leading CB to take out a personal ad to manage another team), they decide their pep talk is making them hypocrites, and Linus is assigned to scout the opposing team. As much as "Peanuts" is a reflection of its era ("Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher?"), it also had a self-awareness as a comic strip (Linus: "The most recent criticism is that there is too little action and far too much talking in the modern-day comic strip. What do you think about this?" CB: "Ridiculous!") that proved just how far Charles M. Schulz was ahead of his time. With fellow pianist Schroeder on the cover, Diana Krall wrote this volume's introduction. --David Horiuchi

Nice collection.......2007-09-04
All Peanuts Box Sets are worth to collect. Each book is well edited with a beautiful cover and package. Due to the long history of the story, it should be quite expensive to collect them all. However, they're still worth to try.
A Must for Peanuts Fans.......2007-05-23
Like many others I grew up with Charlie Brown & gang. I bought some of Peanuts comic books when I was a kid. But with my meager allowance I missed out many of them. Now, even though I'm a mom with 2 kids, I was so excited when the box sets were released. I've bought the 1st 3 box sets and can't wait for the next. My son loves it too. It's wonderful going through the strips with my son on Sunday afternoons.
Good Grief there's more.......2007-05-10
Lucy buries Linus' blanket. Will he find it again? Who is the "Mad Punter"? Who is Miss Othmar? Will the gang every win a baseball game? Will Schroeder finally succumb to Lucy's affections, Why is Violet so damn mean? Well some of these questions will be answered and some not in the next installment of "The Complete Peanuts".
Schultz hitting his stride.......2007-03-26
The strip by this period is in full gear.Schultz is showing his genius.Lucy and Linus are more predominant in this period. Two of his finest characters.
Complete Peanuts box set.......2007-03-09
Packaged beautifully and brings back so many memories of my childhood! Love it.

Book Description
The series that launched a comic-strip renaissance continues.
"My name is 555 95472 but everyone calls me 5 for short...I have two sisters named 3 and 4." With those words, Charles Schulz introduced one (in fact, three) of the quirkiest characters to the Peanuts universe, the numerically-monikered 95472 siblings. They didn't stay around very long but offered some choice bits of satirical nonsense while they did.
As it happens, this volume is particularly rich in never-before-reprinted strips: Over 150 (more than one fifth of the book!) have never seen the light of day since their original appearance over 40 years ago, so this will be a trove of undiscovered treasures even for avid Peanuts collectors.
These "lost" strips include Linus making a near-successful run for class president that is ultimately derailed by his religious beliefs (two words: "great" and "pumpkin"), and Snoopy getting involved with a group of politically fanatical birds. One wonders: Was it the political edge in these stories that got them consigned to oblivion for so long? Also worthy of note is an extended, never-reprinted sequence in which Snoopy gets ill and heads to the veterinarian hospital...
Also in this volume: Lucy's attempts at improving her friends branches out from her increasingly well-visited nickel psychiatry booth to an educational slideshow of Charlie Brown's faults (it's so long there's an intermission!). Also, Snoopy's doghouse begins its conceptual expansion, as Schulz reveals that the dog owns a Van Gogh, and that the ceiling is so huge that Linus can paint a vast (and as it turns out unappreciated) "history of civilization" mural on it.
And baseball continues to be a mainstay: Charlie Brown suffers from pitcher's elbow and is replaced by Linus, who turns out to be a vast improvement; he also blows several more crucial matches through various screw-ups (one with the little red haired girl in attendance); and adding insult to injury, his favorite baseball player is demoted to the minor league.
The Complete Peanuts 1963-64 features a new introduction by animator Bill Melendez, producer of over 75 Peanuts animated specials and movies, including the classic A Charlie Brown Christmas.
Peanuts is the most successful comic strip in the history of the medium. A United Media poll in 2002 found Peanuts to be the second most recognizable cartoon property in the world, recognized by 94 percent of the total U.S. consumer market and a close second only to Mickey Mouse (96 percent).

More of the same, however excellent that same was.......2007-09-09
Much of this was more of the same, the continued development of the characters. There is a set of new characters (Five, with Four and Three coming later) but they turn out to be little more than props, good for a week or two and afterwards for when Schulz needed a generic male for Charlie Brown (Shermy now only shows up for group strips). Three and Four look like little Peppermint Patties, and since Peppermint Patty ends up coming from a single-parent family (father only) one wonders if this is sort of backstory for that.
Foreshadowing some of the changes coming up on the next volume are a couple of developments. The baseball mound has become a scene itself, where the characters come up to chat on various things. As for this volume (1963-64), it's just a couple of characters coming up with things to talk about.
As for the red-headed girl, she has changed from a merely distant figure (distant implying "out of Charlie Brown's League) to a seemingly active source of shame and humiliation. Not that Charlie Brown needs her to humiliate him (as some of the baseball groups show, he could do that all by himself), but it definitely adds an accent point to what's going on around him with those he talks to.
One of the most interesting comics has Charlie Brown actually coming on top, although it's more his father than him. Violet spends a few panels bragging about her Father, which Charlie Brown doesn't so much parry but amplifies by explanation. However, CB stops Violet short and explains that his father makes an honorable living and always has a minute for him no matter what he's doing. The last panel has Violet walking with a slight downward tilt of her head and a seeming sadness in her eyes, as if she had finally been devastatingly bested.
In the end, this is worth getting, although I'd get the 1959-1960 and 1961-1962 before this one.
the complete peanuts 1961/62.......2007-08-22
I came to peanuts cartoons late in my life, but for the past five years I have bought every book available. Luckily for me as I have been a customer of amazon both in america and england and bringing out yearly books has been marvelous. Whenever I feel down I just read a few pages and I'm fine. The trouble is Im' going to be around 80 years old before this complete series is printed!!!! Is there anyway we can move this along? Doreen uk
How can he lose when he's so sincere?.......2007-06-29
A 2007 summer reading list mini review.
Peanuts has been a lifelong obsession with me. Their first t.v. special came out when I was a toddler. One of the first record albums, I recall listening to was "Your'e a good man Charlie Brown" which contains acted out scenes of many of the strips in this volume. I also grew up across the street from a public library and spent countless hours reading every book of Peanuts reprints I could get my hand on.
I especially like the 1963 to 1964 strips because they initiate two of my favorite Peanuts storylines: the one please line, and Joe Shlabotnik. By the one please line, I refer to the strips where the peanuts gang are lined up to buy movie tickets. Sequences like these afforded Schulz the opportunity to put most of his characters in one strip. Joe Shlabotnik is the name of Charlie Brown's favorite ball player who gets sent down to the low minors in this tome. When Patty asks in the 5-9-64 strip if he had feet of clay, Charlie browns reply is "No, he had a low batting average."
One of the best indicators of the staying power of Peanuts is that I am seldom able to read mine as my seven year old daughter is constantly borrowing them. Apparently, she is beginning the same lifelong obsession with peanuts that I have. Good grief!
Excellent quality but strip size a tad small.......2007-06-25
This is the first of "The Complete Peanuts" series I purchase. Having been a Peanuts aficionado as a child and teenager, I am happy that Fantagraphic gives me the chance to revisit the gang in these beautifully designed books. I chose this volume for the sentimental reason I was born in 1963 and wanted to see the strips that were running as I came into the world. Although I was more than happy with the paper quality and design, I want to mention my disappointment at the reduced size of the strip panels, compared to the Holt, Rinehart and Winston editions of the 1960s-70s I was accustomed to. The Peanuts Parade books published in the 80s are even larger in size. One can only speculate as to why Fantagraphic choose to print smaller-sized panels (perhaps to save in costs?), and it's the only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars to this otherwise extraordinary volume.
Good work, Charles Schulz.......2007-05-31
I would definitely give this latest volume 5 stars just for the opportunity of reading the strips. But I'm really happy that the printing quality is much better than the last volume. The Sunday strips particularly are as clean and crisp as the 1960s paperback books from Holt.
Highlights for me were the Sunday strips that weren't printed before, along with the greater explanation of newest character 5 and sisters 3 and 4. Although the school election had been printed in Peanuts Classics (out of print large volume from the 1970s), the run of cartoons wasn't released in its entirety. I noticed that a week's worth of cartoons which took place after Charlie Brown's Little Leaguer Elbow incident wasn't originally included in the 1960s books, which made me wonder if Mr. Schulz had decided it was less than his usual steller (something I never could understand because I love them all).
Any Peanut fan will tell you that this volume, along with the others, is well worth buying. I cannot recommend it enough.
Book Description
A gift set of the third and fourth Complete Peanuts volumes.
A boxed set of the third and fourth volumes, just in time for the holidays, designed by the Award-winning graphic novelist, Seth! The collection of books identical to the individual volumes ships shrinkwrapped, with Vols. 1955-1956 and 1957-1958 packed in a sturdy custom box designed especially for this set. The perfect gift item.
The Complete Peanuts 1955-1956 takes us into the mid-1950s as Linus learns to talk, Snoopy begins to explore his eccentricities (including his hilarious first series of impressions), Lucy's unrequited crush on Schroeder takes final shape, and Charlie Brown becomes
well, even more Charlie Brown-ish! Over half of the strips in this volume have never been printed since their original appearance in newspapers a half-century ago! Even the most dedicated Peanuts collector/fan is sure to find many new treasures.
In The Complete Peanuts 1957-1958, Peanuts definitively enters its golden age. Linus, who had just learned to speak in the previous volume, becomes downright eloquent and even begins to fend off Lucy's bullying; even so, his security neurosis becomes more pronounced, including a harrowing two-week "Lost Weekend" sequence of blanketlessness. Charlie Brown cascades further down the hill to loserdom, with spectacularly lost kites, humiliating baseball losses (including one where he becomes "the Goat" and is driven from the field in a chorus of BAAAAHs); at least his newly acquired "pencil pal" affords him some comfort. Pig-Pen, Shermy, Violet, and Patty are also around, as is an increasingly Beethoven-fixated Schroeder. But the rising star is undoubtedly Snoopy. He's at the center of the most graphically dynamic and action-packed episodes (the ones in which he attempts to grab Linus's blanket at a dead run). He even tentatively tries to sleep on the crest of his doghouse roof once or twice, with mixed results. And his imitations continue apace, including penguins, anteaters, sea monsters, vultures and (much to her chagrin) Lucy. No wonder the beagle is the cover star not only of this volume but also of the beautiful collector's slipcase to this set!
Customer Reviews:
Worth every Peanut!.......2007-09-06
I can't even begin to express how much I am enjoying Fantagraphics wonderful Peanuts boxed sets! The "look and feel" elements are both simplistic and elegant (especially the slip case covering). The archival quality paper is sturdy and clear; these books are designed to last! If you have even a vaugue interest in Peanuts, Schultz, or cartoonist in general these volumes ( at least multiple years) are must buys!
Beautiful collection of 1955-1958 Peanuts reprints.......2007-09-01
This 'boxed set' contains two volumes of the Fantagraphics Peanuts reprint series (1955-56 and 1957-58) in one handsome slipcase. Daily strips run three to a page with Sundays on a full page. All strips are printed in black-and-white on paper of high quality.
In 1955 Charles Schultz won his first Reuben Award, considered the top honor for American cartoonists. These strips contain year five to eight of Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Schroeder, Pigpen, Violet, Patty and the rest of the gang and most are still enjoyable 50 years later.
Amazon currently prices this set almost ten dollars cheaper than buying the two individual volumes. I expect that Fantagraphics will release and that I will buy one of these boxed sets each October.
A true gem.......2007-07-12
My youngest son has spent hours reading the Peanuts books I got from the Weekly Reader Book Club when I was a kid. So for his birthday I bought him this set. He and I have spent many, many very enjoyable hours together reading these volumes out loud. He likes to read Linus, Lucy, and sometimes Snoopy, and I read the rest. It is satisfying to watch my son get as much enjoyment from these strips as I did when I was his age.
I'm sure I'll continue buying these books for him -- and secretly enjoy them as much as he does as we read them together.
Good Choice!.......2007-05-17
I've been Snoopy mania. I was finding some great books to keep. When I find this collection, how happy I was!! I do recommend you this book.
SUPERB!.......2007-05-13
What a wonderful collection, in chronological order, of all of the Peanuts strips. This is a real treasure!

Positive Books Crowd Out Negative Books.......2006-08-26
At first I thought this book was too much for children to absorb. But after seeing the kids' reaction to it and the content of other books the children could be reading, I realized the title of this review.
A Fabulous Character Ed Program!.......2006-03-27
Inch and Miles are now the central characters in our schoolwide character ed program! This beautiful book with powerful lessons from Coach Wooden has been the perfect addition to our program, and it is not the same old charater ed stuff you see everywhere! Each classroom in our school has a copy of the book, and we focus on one or two traits of the Pyramid each month. Students are selected as Students of the Month based on the trait for that month. Every student in the school keeps an on-going journal of writing related to each trait, and students perform special skits, songs, poems, etc related to the traits in the book at our weekly assemblies. Whether you use it individually or schoolwide, this book is a must have for teachers and parents!
A Teacher's Point of View.......2005-10-02
I used this book to begin the school year. I had my students listen to the story to guess each part of the pyramid of success. After the story we built our own pyramid on a bulitan board and discussed all of the elements needed to be successfull. Now I refer to the bulitan board to remind the children of what they are to be doing. This has been a great tool to teach character to my students while keeping control of my class. Inch and Miles are my new class mascots!
Tried and True Journey to Success.......2005-05-07
As a Principal of an elementary school I gave this book to each of my teachers this Fall and we read the book together round-robin style. What an experience! Their enthusiasm has carried through the whole school as our students have all had discussions of the various blocks, the value of hard work and being a person of integrity whatever your path. We so appreciate that Coach Wooden put his successful system into a kid-friendly venue to reach even our kindergarteners. A must-have book for adults as well as children to assist in returning to the basic roots of a successful society. Yes, enthusiasm is important, but staying the course, inch by inch, with confidence and poise, hard work and determination will ensure great accomplishments. So, "hootie-toot-toot" to a rival Bruin we will always be indebted to! Fight on!
Wonderful, Inspirational Book that Every Child Should Have.......2005-04-14
What a wonderful book! The illustrations are colorful and filled with interesting characters. Each block in the "pyramid of success" describes a value in an animated and fun format. A great inspirational book that teaches everyone to to be their best! A terrifically well written that should be shared with everyone you love.
I bought a batch of "Inch and Miles" and gave the book away as presents to my family and friends. "Inch and Miles" is our favorite book in our home library. We recommend this book to parents, educators, and coaches.

Great resource!.......2007-02-08
This is a great resource to have for travelling. I love the tabbed setup that makes it easy to get to the section I need. Obviously a lot of thought was put in to making the book (with an amazing amount of info.) as easy to use as possible.
It is obvious that a great deal of thought and experimentation has been put forth in the making of this valuable resource!
After being gf (and other things free) for 5 years, I appreciate the resource as it will make it far more possible for me to visit Italy (and other countries in my future) maintaining my health as much as possible along the way! Well done!
I have dining cards and they work quite well, but the next time I travel, I will be packing this book to take as well, without a doubt!

A Wonderful Resource For Dining Out Gluten Free.......2007-01-25
Eating when you're away from your own home is always a challenge when you are on a special diet.
In "Let's Eat Out!" Koeller and La France have put together an impressive amount of information to make life easier for travelers and people who just want to eat out with family and friends.
I found the book a bit difficult at first because there is just so much content to sort out. It's definitely not a book to digest in one sitting!
I soon realized it really is a combination of broad reference guide and quick reference "cheat sheets." Once that became clear, it was much easier to scan and use the table of contents and index to find specific information. You can choose to just use the quick guides or go to the more detailed explanations.
All in all, the authors cover a very broad topic in an orderly fashion that makes it easy to locate information for a variety of situations. They use 7 common cuisine types, from American Steak and Seafood to Thai, to analyze the issues a diner can expect to face. They offer comments on the ingredients, the way food is prepared and on likely sources of hidden cross contamination.
After you read a couple of these, you begin to see the patterns and it would not be so difficult to apply the same process to another type of food. As they point out, it's all about educating yourself and learning what questions to ask.
Poring through their food/menu analysis, I discovered to my dismay that the item I had been selecting from a fast food restaurant most likely contains hidden gluten that I would not have thought to question. I did wonder why I didn't feel good every time I ate there!
Not only does the book cover information about individual foods, styles of cuisine, and 10 common food allergens, it also provides specific information about travel including contact information for individual airlines and the special diets they provide, contact information for associations and organizations in many parts of the world and even some translation phrases.
I'd recommend "Let's Eat Out!" as a valuable reference book. It's especially useful for those who frequently eat out or travel and even better, those who'd like to eat out more but have hesitated to take the risk. It could open up a whole new world.
The authors deserve the recognition that their book received as a Benjamin Franklin award finalist for 2006 in the Health (Wellness/Nutrition) category.
For gluten intolerance and food sensitivities.......2007-01-20
"Let's Eat Out!" covers a very difficult topic, restaurant dining for people with food allergies and intolerances. For adults who should avoid top allergens due to mild to moderate food allergies and intolerances, this can be a very useful book. I have already referenced it a few times for some restaurant inspiration, outside of my usual Asian selections.
The book itself is stylishly laid out with color-coded chapters, strategically placed photographs, useful charts, and sample menus. It addresses ten of the most common food allergens: dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten (an intolerance), soy, peanuts, tree nuts, corn, fish, and shellfish.
It should be noted, that this book was written with celiac disease, multiple food "sensitivities", and gluten intolerance in mind. It may not be very appropriate for those who have life-threatening food allergies or severe intolerances. This is not to blame the authors. The various styles of food preparation combined with a high risk of cross-contamination in food service kitchens, make this a complicated area to address. Though, as one food allergy mom pointed out to me, the "Allergy-Free" title is a bit deceiving in this respect.
Also, for those who do have true food allergies, this book should not be used as a dining bible, but more as a suggestion based resource for further research and diligence. As someone who lives with a milk protein allergy, I unfortunately noted many errors with respect to the foods listed as "not containing the allergen." Guacamole (often made with sour cream), margarine (frequently contains lactose and/or milk protein), and sausages (many brands contain cheese) were just a few that caused me to raise the red flag. Your own questions and food label reading would still be required when utilizing this book.
Luckily, the authors do relay what questions to ask, and in many different languages. Kim Koeller has traveled extensively while living with multiple food allergies. This is well evidenced by the resources provided, including a multi-lingual phrase section and what seems to be a very useful airline guide. For those most interested in travel, the authors of "Let's Eat Out!" have also produced a "Multi-Lingual Phrase Passport" for food allergies that is pocket-sized. I thought this was a very handy little guide!
Let's Eat Out!.......2007-01-09
Basically, it says be suspicious of EVERYTHING. As a Celiac, I am already. This book did not help me and I was disappointed but I can see how it might help someone newly diagnosed. Being vigilant is the key.
Its OK...........2006-12-22
I was a little disapointed because many of the allergy graphs show gluten as possible, so that isn't much of a help, since that was already a given. I guess if you are looking for some where to START looking for gluten in your food, then this is a place to start. If you have been doing it for a while, then you really don't need this book....

Book Description
The series that launched a comic strip renaissance enters Schulz's second decade.
Launching into the 1960s, Schulz adds another new cast member. Two, in fact: The obnoxious Frieda of "naturally curly hair" fame, and her inert, seemingly boneless cat Faron.
The rapidly maturing Sally, who was after all just born in the previous volume, is ready to start kindergarten and not at all happy about it. Lucy and Linus' war over the security blanket escalates, with Lucy burying it, cutting it apart, and, in the longest sequence of the book, turning it into a kite and allowing it to fly away. Aauugh! In fact, Linus' life is particularly turbulent in this volume, as he is forced to wear glasses, sees the unexpected return of his favorite teacher, Miss Othmar, and coaxes Sally into the cult of the Great Pumpkin (with regrettable results).
Snoopy, meanwhile, becomes a compulsive water sprinkler head stander, unhappily befriends a snowman or two, and endures a family crisis involving a little family of birds. (Woodstockthe bird and the music festival, for that matteris still a few years away.) And in one of the strangest continuities in the history of Peanuts, the (off-panel) Van Pelt parents acquire a tangerine-colored pool table and become obsessed with it!
Plus baseball blowouts (including a rare team victory), Beethoven birthdays, and plenty of dubious psychiatric help for a nickel. With an introduction by Diana Krall.

Who doesn't love Snoopy and Charlie Brown?.......2007-08-23
If you already bought the previous releases of this collection, you know exactly what you'll find inside: intelligence, emotion and depth of the human relations.
Here you will get some of the Peanuts smartest movements, just like when Snoopy is locked under an ice piece and starts a reflection of his own life or when Linus sees himself without the safety of his blanket.
Even if you prefer the "modern version" of the strips (with Spike, Woodstock, the Red Baron, school scenes and stuff which would appear later, more precisely in the 70's), in this issue, you may find some of the roots and the reasons for the diamond that Charles M. Schulz carved on his life.
Thank you Charles, you really changed my life with these "guys" and "The Complete Peanuts 1961-1962" is another jewel from the master.
A definite must for the refined collector.......2007-06-04
I bought all the items in the series and found them simply irresistible.
The strips are the integral version by the great master himself, Charles M. Schulz, and the edition is very, very good, with a robust hardcover and classy paper.
A special note for Italian speaking people: these are the "integral" strips, not the censored ones published for many years in Italy, where the religious quotations and remarks were systematically erased.
How consistant can you get?.......2007-04-08
This volume of The Complete Peanuts cover the years 1961 and 1962 in their entireties. The most noteworthy event of this book is the introduction of Frieda, the girl with the "naturally curly hair". Soon after her debut, the running gag where Frieda tries to get Snoopy to chase rabbits is used for the first time. Also introduced at this time was Frieda's cat Faron, who only made a few appearances before disappearing. Many of the jokes from this volume were later used in Peanuts television specials, most notably the Christmas and Halloween specials. Peanuts was one of the greatest comic strips of all time, and 1961 and 1962 are certainly among it's best years. Highly recommended.
Excellent purchase.......2007-03-25
I gave this book to my dad who really enjoyed going through all of the comics. This is a very nice hard cover edition and is a good value.
Classic Peanuts, the Hey Day.......2007-02-21
Can't go wrong with ANY volume of this set! Schulz was at his peak in the 60's and early 70's. This one continues the great collection of this timeless strip.
It's fun to see some of these again for the first time in 40 years. Still just as enjoyable as an adult!

Charles M. Schulz has been cartooning for an astonishing 50 years (the "Peanuts" strip itself debuted October 2, 1950, but he drew an earlier incarnation called "Li'l Folks" before that). Peanuts: A Golden Celebration is a remarkable collection of strips spanning that time period. Readers get to see the first appearance of Linus, Marcy, Pigpen, and Woodstock, and even the momentous first time Lucy holds a football for Charlie Brown to kick. Schulz comments on the cartoons and his inspirations via notes in the margin, ranging from boyhood stories about his father (a barber, just like Charlie Brown's) to an account of the time the narcolepsy experts at Stanford University expressed concerns over Peppermint Patty's constant sleeping in class. One of the most interesting inclusions is that of several letters of complaint, ranging from readers whose religious sensibilities have been offended to a 1969 missive from Schulz's own syndicate asking him not to depict Franklin in the same school as the white students anymore. Naturally, the much-loved "Peanuts" holiday specials are covered, as is the musical adaptation You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, but it's the strips that really make the book. Readers can follow the evolution of Schulz's drawing style--deliberately less realistic as the years went on--and even check out a few panels drawn by Schulz's own cartooning heroes. This is a terrific compilation that serves well both as a chronicle of popular culture and as just a really funny collection of comic strips. Don't wait for the Great Pumpkin to bring you one. --Ali Davis
Book Description
Will Charlie Brown ever get to kick the footballs? Will Schroeder finally return Lucy's love? Will Linus give up his security blanket? Will Peppermint Party ever pass a test? And, most importantly will Snoopy--that canine literary ace--ever be published?
"To take a blank piece of paper and draw characters that people love and worry about is extremely satisfying. It really does not matter what you are called or where your work is placed as long as it brings some kind of joy to some person some place." -- Charles Schulz
Peanuts: A Golden Celebration honors the momentous 50th anniversary of Charlie Brown and the gang with over 1,000 carefully selected strips that tell the story of Peanutslike no other book before. In Schulz's own words we learn how he came to create the world's most popular comic strip characters from nostalgic and sometimes painful memories of growing up--such as the agony of classroom Valentine exchange and the longing for a little red-haired girl.
From the debut of Peanuts on October 2, 1950, to the golden jubilee, here are fifty years of the favorite episodes and the..."firsts," such as the first time Lucy pulled the football away from Charlie Brown. Included are scenes from the beloved Charlie Brown television. specials and the latest revival of the Broadway musical, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
These are the strips and events that have made Peanuts an awesome phenomenon, appearing in 2,600 newspapers worldwide everyday. Not bad for a round-headed kid called Charlie Brown.
Let the celebration begin!

This has "cherished treasure" written all over it..........2007-03-27
There are far more comprehensive collections out there. But, if you want a large, beautifully presented coffee-table sized book with many, many strips from different Peanuts eras, then this is it. It is true that the cartoons are a bit gray (one reviewer's criticism), but this simply sets them off from the large, white pages of the book itself. It actually enhances the atmosphere for me.
I love the text in the margins where Mr. Shulz explains a little something about the characters. Very charming. I also love seeing the very first strip in which various characters appeared.
Many of the multi-strip storylines have been truncated. This is inevitable given the book's purpose. As I said, there are more complete collections out there. What you get is an overview that takes you beyond any one time-frame. And yes, the strips are funny, even if I know there is more to a particular story.
The front matter is also great: a photo of THE barbershop-apartment where Mr. Shulz lived, just for example. Lots of other great stuff.
I paid double the Amazon price because I bought it here in Tokyo...and it is worth every penny (or yen!).
Together with "Peanuts, The Art of Charles M. Shulz", this is my favorite Peanuts book.
Buy it now. :-)
classic time.......2006-09-23
charles schulz is truly a classic and is missed everyday..........from 1950---2000....peanuts was the best comic strip ever..........
Great Book.......2006-08-17
This book is a true delight for the Peanut enthusiast! Not only do you get the lovable comic strips but also unknown history about Charles Shultz and the Peanuts thru tellings and actual letters from both fans and non-fans! Great to add to any collection!
One of the best Peanuts collections ever!.......2006-07-21
This is probably one of the best Peanuts collections ever! I love them so much! Most of the comic strips are in black and white, while the others (especially the Sunday strips) are in vivid color. This book is so funny! Whenever I was feeling low and depressed, I would pull this huge book out, flip to any random page, and it would instantly make me feel better!
Buy this book, or else your love for Peanuts will be incomplete!
Good Grief: A Golden Celebration for a Gem of An Artist!!.......2004-08-04
When Peanuts made it's debut as a new comic strip in 1950, the world of the funny pages was changed forever. Charles Schultz was argueably the greatest and most certainly the most influential strip artist of all time, and Peanuts totally changed the perception of the medium, appealing to the entire family rather than mostly to adults, and broadening and deepening the intellectual plane on which the art takes form. Schultz, who writes most of the copy in this book himself and includes a short bio and some wonderful running commentary throughout, inadvertantly proves how revolutionary Peanuts was by including some of the strips which influenced him while growing up. These comics, from Krazy Kat to Wash Tubbs, are mildly amusing at best, woefully inferior at worst, and in virtually all cases have failed to stand the test of time. Peanuts, however, has never dated, and most of the strips still are very readable half a century after original publication. An excellent collection, to be sure, and one which belongs on any comic fan's shelf. So why only four stars? Because this collection celebrates Schultz's entire career (at the time), from 1950 to 1999, when in fact, his very best and most innovative work was produced during a comparatively narrow time frame, from about 1954 or so to 1966. Luckily, some of the most famous series of strips are represented here, from Snoopy's famous impressions of other characters (including a particularly hilarious Beethoven) to Charlie Brown's longing for the Little Red Haired Girl (any person who has ever been in love can relate to that one.) In 1966, however, Charles Schultz produced his most famous series of cartoons dealing with Snoopy and The Red Baron, a Walter Mitty-esque idea so brilliant, that neither he nor any other cartoonist has been able to top it since. From that point, Peanuts began declining in quality from sheer brilliance down to mere excellence; Snoopy in particular was never the same wonderful dog we had all grown to know and love. (Remember the endless series of strips from about fifteen years ago that centered on Snoopy's love of cookies? It seemed as if he could think of nothing else for two years or more!) The only character who seemed to grow and mature in these later years was Charlie Brown himself; it was nice to see him have successful encounters with girls, become a summer-camp hero (albeit with a paper bag over his head!) and actually WIN A BALL GAME!!! Luckily for us, Schultz still continued to draw the strip so well that it is still one of the most popular comics in the country several years after his death. In short, a very good collection, one that will hopefully lead the reader to search out and find individual collections of the glory years of Peanuts when Schultz was truly at his best. Good Grief, indeed!!!

Some New Ideas for "Tired" Vegetarians.......2007-05-18
I've been a vegetarian for a long time and am sort of tired of the "same old stuff." Even though my kids are grown and gone, I bought this book because it promised simple dishes kids would like. I readily admit I am an uninspired cook and the state of my pantry usually rivals Mother Hubbard's. But this book, as promised, did contain many new and easy ideas and combinations that are quick to prepare from common ingredients. Many of the recipes use meat substitutes, which in my mind is "cheating." The way I see it, vegetarianism is a meatless way of eating, not making traditionally meat-based dishes with substitutes. Except for that personal little quirk, I'd rate it 5 stars. I appreciate the variety this book will introduce to my diet. I also really appreciate the "do it because it's healthful" slant of the book, rather than the usual "do it because if you don't you're a bad person" focus of so many other vegetarian cookbooks.
I love this cookbook!.......2007-05-14
My family and I are new to the vegetarian lifestyle and I was looking for a cookbook that would be an easy transition to eating healthier. The recipes in this book are all quick and delicious! I use it on a daily basis in my kitchen.

OK, but Not Really Kid Friendly (unless your kid grew up vegetarian).......2007-01-15
Typical vegetarian fare. I was looking for easy, simple recipes for my 5-year-old, who refuses to eat meat, yet prefers chips and ice cream to healthy foods. The recipes in this book include bean sprouts and other not-so-kid-friendly ingredients. They just don't impress my son. I much prefer "Feeding the Healthy Vegetarian Family" by Ken Haedrich.
Great recipes for everyday use.......2007-01-08
We are two working parents raising our children to eat like us, ovo-lacto vegetarian with some fish. My 2-year old is a more adventurous eater than some kids, but his favorites fall in the ever-popular bread, pasta, and cheese categories. We have tried many recipes in this cookbook, and he has liked just about all of them. Several are now part of our regular weekday repertoire. They are healthy and easy to make. I highly recommend this cookbook.

Informative and well-written.......2007-07-11
From the start of this book, I felt like I was sitting down for a one-on-one conversation with Dr. Wood. Having a severe peanut allergy himself, he offers a unique and very personal perspective not found in publications by other doctors. This book came along at the perfect time for us - with our oldest food-allergic child on the brink of entering public school, I am especially grateful for the practical information and advice in that arena.
This book is down-to-earth enough to serve as a starting point for food allergy "newbies", and well-organized enough to serve as a reference for us "veterans". I would recommend it to anyone affected by food allergies.
Great Addition to My Food Allergy Library.......2007-07-03
I am also a co-leader of a food allergy support group. I have read a lot of books on food allergies as well as have had a lot of great speakers come to our meetings addressing food allergies. I find this book to be one of the best available. It is very resourceful and easy to use and easy to understand. It covers a wide range of topics. There is information on testing, avoidance, sending your child to school with food allergies, alternative treatments, etc. I am glad to finally find a book that covers it all. You won't be disappointed with this one.
Amazing Resource.......2007-07-01
Fantastic! This book is purely an amazing resource for everyone: parents, care givers, friends and families and most of all, the person with food allergies. As a parent of a food allergic child, I've spent the last 6 years learning everything on my own, via FAAN and other resources. This book sums it up in one fell swoop! The authors cover what issues and challenges exist, how to understand them and most of all...how to live successfully with food allergies.
Information is clearly defined in lay terms and organized for quick review. Food Allergies, as a disease, is new to many physicians and this book helps explains details that doctors haven't dealt with yet, are unfamiliar with, or simply do not have the time to cover in a visit; such as various testing, managing school, reading labels, risk assessment, etc.
The Food Label Crib Sheet is must for all beginners too!
My local food allergy parent education group is in the process of purchasing this book for each school nurse within our school district (68,000 students) after they discovered that the head nurse felt this book would be a vital resource for her staff and parents, but didn't have the funding for the purchase.
I have a feeling this book will soon become common recommendation for people beginning on the path of successful living with Food Allergies.
Grateful to have found this book.......2007-05-03
If you read just 1 book about food allergies, make it this one. This book is my food allergy bible. Why?
1. It is comprehensive without being overwhelming. By this, I mean it covers a lot and it does so in an empowering way; you don't finish the book (or even a chapter) feeling paralyzed. You leave with information to make decisions about how you want to deal food allergies as they affect you, a family member, a friend, etc.
2. It is nice to see so much key information presented in one place. I tried obtaining the same information from other publications and websites. I could not find it all (I am not sure most of it exists elsewhere) - and I had to hunt all over the place to collect the golden nuggets that I could find.
3. I love that everything is presented in layman's terms - not the "medical speak" one finds in medical journals or research papers/studies (which clearly have value, but, for an "average Joe" like me, can be difficult to muddle through).
4. The authors present specific information - with details and quantitative references/benchmarks rather than generalizations. For example, they provide percentages about how likely one is to outgrow a particular food allergy, how likely one is to have a child with a food allergy (if you have an allergic disease) or another child with a food allergy (if you are a parent with one food allergic child already), etc. The information provided is also very practical; it takes into account that food allergic people do not live in a plastic bubble and talks about ways to deal with "everyday situations" (including social situations) as well as emergencies.
5. The book answers questions that you would ask if you had unlimited time with your own allergist or with Dr. Wood himself. So, do not worry if you cannot get an appointment with Dr. Wood (arguably the nation's leading authority on food allergies and asthma); in a sense, this book brings him to you. Topics cover everything you would expect, including the pros and cons associated with RAST testing and skin testing; how some allergies tend to travel together; hidden sources of allergens; promising research; challenges associated with day care and school environments (along with recommendations on how to deal with them).
From someone who "gets it".......2007-04-30
I have been leading an allergy support group, volunteering with non-profit organizations, writing a newsletter and raising a child with food allergies for the past six years, so I really felt like I had seen and read it all. However this book is a most welcome addition to my food allergy collection, in fact, it's on top!
If you are just starting out on this journey, you will have all of your questions answered and answers for those that you dont even know to ask.
If, like me, you've been at this for awhile, you will get more detail, all of the latest research, facts and figures and even some of the rationale behind decisions that our doctors make.
Of particular interest to me was the information on outgrowing food allergies, a whole chapter on peanuts, and one on potential cures and current research.
Best of all, in my view, are some of the personal stories from Dr Wood. When you hear the stories, of someone who has been there and also see that you can survive and thrive even with life-threatening food allergies, you cant help but finish the book with a sense of hope and confidence.
After my husband spent some time reading this yesterday said, "This book sure isnt for dummies!"
Sincerely,
Gina
Book Description
A revised and updated version of the definitive peanut allergy book.
Since the publication of The Peanut Allergy Answer Book in May 2001, there has been much additional research published in the field of peanut allergy and anaphylaxis in medical literature. This research includes new diagnostic tests, new vaccines and therapies, and new information on the history of peanut allergy. In addition, there has also been a great increase in public awareness of the societal impact of peanut allergy, such as in schools and other child-care facilities, in restaurants, and in the food and restaurant industry. This attention has led to the publication of guidelines for schools in the management of food allergies and anaphylaxis, to legislation such as the Food Allergen Labeling Consumer Protection Act of 2006, and proposed legislation for restaurant guidelines for food-allergic consumers. The incidence of peanut allergy has doubled in the past five years and continues to increase so the impact of this medical problem, particularly in young children, is enormous.
The Peanut Allergy Answer Book, 2nd Edition,. contains 50% of new and revised material, including a new foreword and introduction, as well as new chapters such as, "Why has peanut allergy increased so much in the past 5-10 years?"; "What is the difference between being peanut-sensitive and peanut-allergic?"; "What is the Hygiene Hypothesis?"; and "Can skin contact cause an anaphylactic reaction?"
Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2007-01-13
I thought this book was very helpful as I have 2 children with peanut allergies. It answered many questions that I have in very easy to read language. It is a must read for anyone with concerns about peanut allergies.
The Peanut Allergy Answer Book.......2003-05-17
Very helpful and consise. Gives a thorough overview of peanut allergy and is easy to understand. Helpful for both myself (I have a peanut allergic son) and for my family to better understand the issues involved.
Very informative.......2003-01-10
There is a lot of helpful information in this book, especially about foods that contain peanut products when you would not expect it and about the treatment of allergic reactions. I am about 40, and have been severely allergic to peanuts my whole life. I had to learn much of this information through some very unpleasant allergic reactions. If you have a child with a peanut allergy or have the allergy yourself, I would highly recommend this book as a way of avoiding some of those unpleasant (and sometimes life-threatening) experiences, and as a way of understanding how the allergy works.
Very Informative.......2002-06-08
I highly reccomend this book to any parent who has a child with peanut allergies. It is an extremely informative book. Dr. Young does not use medical terms that are hard for the layperson to understand. He also provides other resources which are invaluable. I liked the way he gave situations and how they were either resolved or should have been resolved. He anwered all you could/would ever want to know about peanut allergies.
Dr. Young has been treating my son for his peanut allergies (as well as other allergies) for the past few years, so i personally know how well informed this Dr. is.
Thank you, Dr. Young!
very informative and well written.......2002-01-30
As a parent of a newly diagnosed peanut allergic 4 yr-old, this is just what I needed to read. Dr. Young covers clearly and comprehensively all the aspects of peanut (and other food) allergy. There is so much information currently available on the subject of peanut allergy but this is the only up-to-date book that brings it all together. I recommend this to anyone concerned by - or interested in learning more about - food allergies.
