Book Description
"Special Circumstances":
The words have sent chills down Tally's spine since her days as a repellent, rebellious ugly. Back then Specials were a sinister rumor -- frighteningly beautiful, dangerously strong, breathtakingly fast. Ordinary pretties might live their whole lives without meeting a Special. But Tally's never been ordinary.
And now she's been turned into one of them: a superamped fighting machine, engineered to keep the uglies down and the pretties stupid.
The strength, the speed, and the clarity and focus of her thinking feel better than anything Tally can remember. Most of the time. One tiny corner of her heart still remembers something more.
Still, it's easy to tune that out -- until Tally's offered a chance to stamp out the rebels of the New Smoke permanently. It all comes down to one last choice: listen to that tiny, faint heartbeat, or carry out the mission she's programmed to complete. Either way, Tally's world will never be the same.

Strange fascination, fascinating me / Changes are taking the pace I'm going through.......2007-09-20
This is a review on the audio book version of "Specials" performed brilliantly by Carine Montbertrand.
I will assume that anyone reading this book has read the previous books in this series. If not than stop reading this review and go read them. The last we saw of Tally Youngblood, she had escaped pretty town and on her own made it to the New Smoke ready to reunite with her boyfriend Zane. Poor afflicted Zane, who took the cure with her and started to experience terrible headaches. At the Smoke, Tally is told by her old beau Ugly David that the cure pills were meant to be taken together (although in their directions they never said so!) and Zane got the Nanobytes that apparently lurved to snack on brain matter nonstop, while Tally got the pill that stopped those Nanos from that third trip to the buffet. Tally realizes that she has cured herself of pretty-mindedness. She is sort of like Keanu Reeves in the Matrix but without the leather outfit or Laurence Fishburne.
Tally is soon revisited by her old friend Shay, who is now a Special by her own choice. Shay wants Tally to be Special too, and whisks her back to Pretty town for yet another operation. Specials are like the Men in Black from our society, you hear of them but never see them, yet you fear them anyway. They don't have the brain lesions, so they aren't airheads like the Pretties. Specials have all sorts of add-ons, for sight and stealth and strength. They have "skintennas" built in so they can talk to each other on a network, they can see in the dark, and have tattoos covering their bodies. They also have wolf like features and sharpened teeth, the better to eat you with my dear!
Tally, as a special, is deadly beautiful. Along with Shay and the other Crims they are still cutting themselves to get the most excellent clarity, or to be "Icy" in special-speak. The Cutters are Dr. Cable's elite force. Tally wants to know why Zane isn't a Special also, and her and Shay go visit him in Pretty town, where she realizes that Zane's brain damage couldn't be fixed and he is a shaky mess. She still loves him, but her Special mind is turned off by his flaws. The only way he can become a Special is to pull off a serious trick and lead her and shay to the New Smoke. So they arrange for him to be freed, and follow him.
The rest of the book is built around Tally and Shay causing havoc in a Military building, freeing Zane from his beacon, following him to the New Smoke and discovering a whole new town called Diego where surgeries to enhance oneself have gone awry and Tally has to choose between curing herself, and saving her town from War.
These books, especially this third one, have dealt with so many issues albeit in a different way, that we all have to face. We all have found ourselves looking in the mirror and seeing how much we have changed, either by time or by circumstances. We all must either face those changes, accept them and grow or try to gain back what we have lost ignoring the futility of that action. There comes a point in your life where you must see the scars that life had given you and embrace them. You must take your losses and make them count for something.
That's what these books have spoken to me through Tally and her experiences.
The trilogy comes to a thrilling finale and we get a lot of answers.......2007-09-11
As a 28-year-old woman, I have been surprised and pleased to find myself as engaged by these books as I am. They are well-written, fast-moving and intriguing, and provide a lot of food for thought. The world is so different and vibrant that it feels real to me even after closing the books, which is somewhat rare for me.
This stunning last book in the series features Tally and Shay being "rewarded" for their amazing skill in becoming clear-minded and escaping the shackles of pretty-hood, by being made into Specials, the police force that takes care of "Special Circumstances" in the city and beyond. Shay heads up an elite Special force which is charged with taking down the Smokies, the rebel community that lives from the wild and never turns pretty.
The Smokies are infiltrating the city and curing large numbers of pretties, and only the Specials can stop humanity from reverting to the horrible ways of life previous to having Pretties - when humans burnt and chopped down forests, decimated the wild, killed animals and each other, and generally spoiled the land so badly that many parts are completely ruined.
The Specials embark on a journey to find the New Smoke and destroy it, to preserve their way of life. They follow Tally's old boyfriend Zane, a revolting ordinary pretty, and the Crims, as they try to find the New Smoke. Even with Tally's Special brain, though, she hasn't forgotten what Zane meant to her, and her conflict between who she was and who she is helps drive the story to its ultimate conclusion.
This was an extremely satisfying ending to the trilogy. I can't wait for the new book that is set in the future, with new characters - Extras. Do be sure and read all of these in order, though - they wouldn't make sense otherwise.
My Thoughts.......2007-08-20
I thought Specials was the best so far. SO much action and emotion. Quite beautifully written. Good job mr. westerfield
Slow Starter.......2007-06-01
The first half or so of the book is somewhat clumsy, and rather hard to get into. There is just something off and unconvincing about the attempt to be inside Tally's icy new mindset. These shortcomings are especially notable as the first two books in the trilogy are so cleverly written and the shifts in Tally's mindsets always so seamless and believable. Westerfeld never quite captures Tally's voice in Specials until a little into the second half, when the book really starts to take off. From there to the end, the action is gripping and Tally is once again convincing. Perhaps the author never felt quite comfortable with Tally as a Cutter.
As great as this trilogy is, there is one facet of all three books that stands out. Whether or not it detracts from the series is up for debate, but it is hard not to notice that there is never a single point where Tally does not have a male counterpart with whom she has sexual tension. First, there is Peris. And then David. And then Zane. And even when she is in the middle of a (supposedly) Pre-Rusty civilization deep in the wilderness, leave it to Tally to buddy up with Andrew Simpson Smith. One would assume this is just a typical convention of young adult literature, but it got to be a little trite.
it was a "special" book.......2007-05-31
I loved the book Uglies and pretties so I decided to read Specials. I thought that the book was a little awkward at times but its was still one of the best books I have ever read. I can't beleive that zane died I mean really I know that he wasn't welll but I never thought he would die. Oh and David is still in the picture with Tally near the end but at first she hated him and wanted to do nothing else but kill him. I still loved the book and finished it in 1 day and didn't want it to end. But I hope that Mr. Scott Westerfeld will come out with book to officially end the series becuase Specials had a good ending but it was a little weak. I hope you read this book despite some of my coments it really was a great book. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

Playing on every teen's passionate desire to look as good as everybody else, Scott Westerfeld (Midnighters) projects a future world in which a compulsory operation at sixteen wipes out physical differences and makes everyone pretty by conforming to an ideal standard of beauty. The "New Pretties" are then free to play and party, while the younger "Uglies" look on enviously and spend the time before their own transformations in plotting mischievous tricks against their elders. Tally Youngblood is one of the most daring of the Uglies, and her imaginative tricks have gotten her in trouble with the menacing department of Special Circumstances. She has yearned to be pretty, but since her best friend Shay ran away to the rumored rebel settlement of recalcitrant Uglies called The Smoke, Tally has been troubled. The authorities give her an impossible choice: either she follows Shay's cryptic directions to The Smoke with the purpose of betraying the rebels, or she will never be allowed to become pretty. Hoping to rescue Shay, Tally sets off on the dangerous journey as a spy. But after finally reaching The Smoke she has a change of heart when her new lover David reveals to her the sinister secret behind becoming pretty. The fast-moving story is enlivened by many action sequences in the style of videogames, using intriguing inventions like hoverboards that use the rider's skateboard skills to skim through the air, and bungee jackets that make wild downward plunges survivable -- and fun. Behind all the commotion is the disturbing vision of our own society -- the Rusties -- visible only in rusting ruins after a virus destroyed all petroleum. Teens will be entranced, and the cliffhanger ending will leave them gasping for the sequel. (Ages 12 and up) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Everybody gets to be supermodel gorgeous. What could be wrong with that?
Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license -- for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.
But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world -- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.
Customer Reviews:
Really good!!!.......2007-09-22
I loved this book! I liked the futuristic aspect of it: my favourite part was when Tally and Shay were looking at some 300 year old magazines and saying stuff like "But they're all ugly!" and "Since they didn't have the operation back then, they weren't ashamed of being ugly".
A real must-read (i suggest it for girls, although some boy might like it i guess)!
Uglyville or Realityville?.......2007-09-13
This book may have been a little easier read than most of the other books I read, but it was an overall good book. The story follows the journey of a young girl named Tally who is about to turn sixteen and turn pretty. Instead of getting the anticipated surgery on her birthday, she is faced with the decision to go after her runaway friend Shay and give up the position of The Smoke or never be pretty. She ventures off to find The Smoke and lives there with her friend Shay as well as other new friends. The book follows the struggles she feels with betraying her friends and what she really wants.
The events are easy to follow, but Scott Westerfield fills the book with symbolism. Though the world Tally lives in does not sound too much like the one you and I live in, it symbolizes the ideals in our society.
This book was a fun, easy read and the symbolism was a great addition to the story to make readers think.
An engaging and thought-provoking book about a "utopian" society.......2007-09-11
As a 28-year-old, I didn't expect to find this book as enthralling as it was - the title lacks subtlety, and I figured that a book meant for teens might not be complex enough to truly draw me in and make me think. Not so! This is one of the most enjoyable reads I have had all year.
Tally is an "ugly", a person under 16 in this society where people are turned "pretty" on their 16th birthday. Uglies, AKA adolescents, live separately from their parents in this world, existing in a loosely-controlled boarding school where they are relatively free to break out at nights and explore on their hoverboards.
When Tally's best friend Peris becomes a pretty, Tally is hurt that she doesn't hear a word from him, and takes up a friendship with Shay, a rebellious young woman who questions whether she even wants to be pretty, a subversive and rare quality. When Shay decides to escape to "The Smoke", the deeply hidden rebel community where nobody turns pretty, Tally is forced by her government into deciding whether she wants to betray her new best friend and the community, or whether she wants to live her entire life stuck inside pretty town, but forever ugly and forever shunned.
What happens next is the real story.
This was a fast-paced, thought-provoking book that was a pleasure to read. I couldn't wait to get home each day to dive back in, and halfway through I knew I had to order the other two in the trilogy so that I wouldn't have to wait after finishing this first one.
Give this a try.
Pretty is as Pretty does........2007-09-07
This a review for the audio book version of "Uglies" performed by Carine Montbertrand.
This is geared towards young adults, but believe me it's a book for any age. Scott Westerfeld is one of the few male authors out there who can successfully tell a story through young girl's eyes and get it right. This book is about a world divided into two parts, just as humanity is, ugly and pretty. Up until your 16th birthday you are considered an Ugly, you go to ugly schools, live in ugly dorms, reside in ugly city all the while dreaming of that one day when you will become pretty and get to live the good life in pretty town. Young girls and boys are told they are ugly by their parents and the government, they think they are too fat or skinny; they have big noses and squinty eyes. All they have to look forward too is that day when they turn sweet sixteen and get to shed their Ugly skins to be "normal" and pretty. The Pretties live in gorgeous buildings, throw parties all day; they seemingly have no worries and are always happy.
I know it seems just too literal, okay young people think they are ugly and when they "grow up" they will be able to do whatever they want, and pretty people always seem happier. It goes beyond that. Tally Youngblood is our heroine, her best friend Paris has been turned and she cannot wait to join him. She meets Shay and thus begins a quick friendship. Shay soon shows Tally another world, taking her to the "rusting ruins" on their hover boards (yes I said hover boards you back to the future freaks!) The ruins, are what is left of the "rusties" which you figure out are basically us, but so far gone and abandoned now its all being taken back into the earth, rusting. That world, the Uglies are told, had wars and famine and everyone was unhappy, so the scientist "cured" all that by mandating the surgery and therefore "saving" society.
Shay doesn't believe this is right, and tells Tally of another society, a secret one called the "Smokies" and she is joining them before turning 16. Tally is shocked! How could Shay WANT to stay ugly forever? Shay leaves, but not before asking Tally to go with her, but Tally doesn't want to be an ugly anymore...she wants to be happy so she stays, Shay does give her a map just in case she changes her mind. The government on the other hand connects Tally to the Smokies and blackmails her into finding Shay, if she doesn't she will stay Ugly forever.
I won't give everything away, but I will say that the rest involves Tally finding out who she truly is, and what she is capable of. You get to find out what the Pretties actually are, and why, and what exactly lies outside of Ugly and Pretty town. You also get to hear about the "Specials" which are Pretties but with deadly skills.
I cannot recommend this book enough, it's a quick read, its not Kierkegaard but its pretty darn fascinating nevertheless. The reader of this audiobook does an excellent job! I cannot wait to read the second in the series "Pretties".
really like this book.......2007-08-27
I bought this book for summer reading for my high school daughter. I read it too. It was quite an interesting futuristic story. Not at all what I thought. Could be what our future holds with all the plastic surgery going on. I could not wait to read the next one.

Nice addition.......2007-02-16
As an experienced black belt Judo, with a long competition history, I loved this book very much. I am always searching to expand my technical skills. And this BJJ handbook gives me more inspiration to drill my students and myself to new skills.
One of the best books........2007-01-11
One of the best books in BJJ.
I like the kind of way he presented, explained & teach about BJJ.
A Resource Not To Be Missed.......2006-07-04
After reading Rodrigo's The Path to the Blackbelt, I have adopted it as one of the primary curriculum resources for my school of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts.
Rodrigo Gracie is one of the toughest no holds barred competitors out there today, but what seperates this book from many others written by tough fighters is that Rodrigo is an equally great teacher; he has poured into this book a tremendous amount of experience, training wisdom and essential techniques.
The Path to the Black Belt is a best pick for anyone's training library.
Excellent Book.......2006-07-04
"The Path to Black Belt" is the best Jiu-Jitsu book on the market and is a must for anyone who wants to become a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. The typical instructional book reads like an encyclopedia of technqiues, but this approach only gives the reader a cursory idea of how to master the art. In Jiu-Jitsu, knowing dozens of techniques is only the first step in becoming proficient. The coveted jiu-jitsu black belt only comes after years of smart training. Being consistent, avoiding injuries and understanding how to develop a complete game over several years are the factors that will separate a black belt from an aspiring black belt. Rodrigo's book covers all of these areas, articulating the fundamental concepts in Jiu-Jitsu in a way that only a life-long practiioner and ADCC champion can do.
"The Path to Black Belt" gives the student guidance on every aspect of learning Jiu-Jitsu, from choosing the right instructor to developing a personal style, from transitions to why so many students quit along the way. I have not seen another book that comes close to giving the complete approach to training that is outlined in this book. As an instructor myself, I believe that the mechanics of individual techniques are the easiest part of the art a student can learn, but smart training methods are very difficult for most students to grasp. However, Rodrigo manages to address this topic in a way that everyone will find accesssible.
This book is worth the money just for the section on training, but Rodrigo also includes a series of drills and techniques from every position. The drills break down some of the the fundamental concepts in Jiu-Jitsu, such as balance and leverage, in a way that will refine the understanding of both beginners and seasoned vets. The techniques shown are high-percentage moves that anyone can execute with the proper training. Rodrigo teaches basics while clearly and realistically demonstrating how they will play out in an actual match. He covers complementary techniques from every position, so the reader is not simply learning moves in isoloation, but is learning how to put together a complete game of moves that work in conjunction with one another.
I can't think of a better Jiu-Jitsu book to purchase, and this is THE boook for anyone wishing to reach the highest levels of Jiu-Jitsu.
I have seen them all, and this is the BEST of the BEST!!!.......2006-05-29
WOW, I am amazed by this books instruction level. VERY VERY detailed, and great detail is spent to give a view from the instructors viewpoint. Rodrigo has left me in shock with this one - absolutely essential, especially if you are an instructor looking for a GREAT reference book for your class.

Finally..........2007-06-09
I was very pleased with the book on several fronts. I've seen too many people hitting the CMDB wall, in part due to a lack of efforts in developing a Service Catalog. Thanks guys, for help folks avoid a savage journey and finding the Right Road.

Road Map for a Service-Centric IT.......2007-04-24
The authors claim that in a service-centric world, it is increasingly meaningless to try to separate software from services; that IT Technology is an increasingly commoditized market, as commoditized as electric utilities; and finally, that nobody in normal circumstances builds in-house utility capabilities to leverage differentiation and competitiveness.
In this scenario, CIOs are facing pressure from inside and from outside their organizations . Inside pressures come from cost management and service management; both often perceived as complex cul de sacs. Outside pressures come from an increasingly mature On Demand Services , well established outsourcing markets, or common supply chain strategies. Regulatory demands and other factors will maintain the need for in-house IT requirement for a while.
However, CIOs and IT organizations with better chances to do something relevant and, above all, with chances to bridge with the business future, will be organizations that succeed in understanding IT as business' portfolio services.
This situation defines spaces of opportunities for IT organizations: first, to become aware of the topology of the space that is opening in the industry and the role Service Catalogs may play in solving the "how-to"; and second, to expand the collaboration of the IT community to develop a Service Design discipline able to project many interesting initiatives already being developed.
This book is a simple and robust approach to move IT in the service direction.

Great idea for students.......2007-08-06
The biggest problem about playing with an orchestra is that most of the times you don't have enough time to rehearse with them. This book provides a substantial help, since we can play along with the recorded orchestra and get used to it when going for the real thing. This is something pop and jazz musicians do all the time, but we don't find many classical pieces in this format. Just one little negative point: it doesn't come with the orchestra score.

Palm Trees: A Story in Photographs
ASIN: 0691085374 |
Book Description
This user-friendly and authoritative book will serve scientists, growers, and sightseers as a guide to the 67 genera and 550 species of naturally occurring palms found in the Americas. Its purpose is to give an introduction to the diversity of palms and allow almost anyone to identify a palm from this part of the world. Providing scientifically accurate descriptions and a rich supply of illustrations, including color photos taken in the wild of over 256 species, this guide is extraordinary in its coverage of the plant that has become for many people the symbol of the tropical landscape.
Palms are not only aesthetically pleasing, but they also make up an economically and ecologically important family of plants. In industry, for example, the coconut, oil palm, and date palm have a wide and varied use. In the lowland rain forest, palms are usually one of the most abundant and diverse families of plants. Field Guide to the Palms of the Americas will appeal to professional scientists or students working in the tropics-including agronomists, anthropologists, ecologists, entomologists, natural historians, and zoologists-as well as to amateur and professional growers of palms, to "eco-tourists" who visit tropical regions, and to inhabitants of these regions who are interested in the native flora.

The American palm compendium.......2005-11-16
Palms are a very conspicuous feature of the tropical landscape, whether in the wilds of Central and South America or in the suburban environments further north. They are also important economically (usually as fruit crops) and culturally (having uses as diverse as roofing, as material for weaving hammocks as fodder for edible beetle larvae!). Since everyone knows what a palm is, yet most non-specialists cannot get much beyond that, this guide to their identification should fill a niche.
This is a field guide to the 550 species of palm occurring naturally in the American tropics. The taxonomic treatment seems to this non-specialist to be eminently sensible and many knotty systematic probems appear to have been carefully resolved. A 40 page appendix of accepted names helps clarify what has happened to some of the older synonyms, hybrid names and such.
The authors have crammed an awful lot of new and useful information into the three-hundred and fifty odd pages. A main key permits identification to genera with further keys sprinkled throughout the body of the book. There are handy introductions to families and genera. The text is succinct and well oriented towards field identification while the 236 photographs at the back allow the user to quickly narrow down the search by visual means. Maps are provided for every species - this must have been a huge task! - and country checklists provide a further tool for homing in on the plant in question.
In resume, this is a master work which will be seen in the field for decades to come. It should be high on the list of any tropical landscape gardener, horticulturalist, anthropologist, botanist or naturalist.
a must have.......2005-10-07
if you're interested in neotropical palms, you ought to buy this excellent guide. all three authors are considered to be highly esteemed authorities who know their stuff very well. the description said it had approximately 380 pages, but together with all the appendices and photo pages, the total number of pages gets to 500.
A must for all palm enthusiasts.......1999-12-16
Overall it would say that it 's the excellent job that authors has put together all the description of American palm species. It would be welcome among serious palm collectors as well as reserchers.
The only thing I don't like about this book and I think it is controversial among palm colleectors is that the book tends to lump down many named species into a synonymous for example, a genus Coccothrinax or the palms in the Attalea Group. Though not all of the recorded species are really distinct from each other, many of them are quite different and should be separately treated at least in a variety level i.e., genus Acrocomia which authors has lumped from 26 recorded species inot only 2 species. This is however not explicitly stated there at all.
A must have!.......1998-04-30
This is probably the most useful book for anyone involved in plant identification, such as Forest Engineers, specially those working in tropical America, where one often encounters many kinds of palms in the field, but until now it was not easy to identify them, and palms are mostly overlooked because they have the reputation of being difficult to identify. This book changes it all, and it's definitely a must-have.
There are two more authors for this book!!!.......1998-02-12
I use this book for field work, and it seems not fair that a book of three authors, appears as a one-author book, I know the other two people and they are scientist and work in the palms (Arecaceae) as well as Mr Henderson.

The official party line but not entirely honest.......2003-11-22
First of all the good news... this book is a great introduction of what to expect with the Oral Board Exam. Lots of info.
As someone who used this book and failed the oral boards here is the bad news...The author writes that if one failed the boards this is due to having violated some basic rule of the practice of medicine or some principle of conduct between human beings...This is not true at all! Competency in real life and "comptenecy" with the ABPN are 2 unrelated items. Basically the examiners have a preset about 10 hurdles for you to navigate sussesfully in order to receive their passing grade. The problem is that these hurdles are purposefully hidden from you while you are trying your best. YOU have to remember to metion all ten or fail. That the examiners hide the hurdles from you behind a stone face while you are anxiously trying to show your best attributes makes this artificial situation even worse.
Another falsehood...The statement that the ABPN has no set percentage of candidates who must fail the exam. In order to exist as an entity on financial grounds alone it MUST fail a good percentage to remain in business with its exhorbitant fees. Of note, the examiners are placed in pairs. This in effect sets up tension BETWEEN THE TWO EXAMINERS. Neither of the 2 wants to appear too lenient with a condidate in front of the other and thus the incentive is to be brutal with candidates. I would have appreciated a book which was more honest in relation to the above. In a sense, the author by towing the party line has become a part of the corrupt process,(candidates of 1994 and afterwards face recertification while those from before don't), which really is irrelevant with regard to good clinical care.
