4 out of 5 stars A good diversion from Game Boy.......2007-02-13

My 8 year son loves these Ripley's books. He will read it cover to cover in one sitting. He loves to take Ripley's to school to share and gross out his friends about people with metal studs all over their bodies or incredible animal feats. He forgets that he doesn't like to read when he's reading Ripley's. OK, it's not Shakespeare, but if this is what it takes, then it's well worth the cover price.

Awesome, you will love it as much as I do.

4 out of 5 stars Ripley's Special Edition 2007.......2007-01-28

Full of exciting information that holds a young person's interest. My son, age 10, would like to have seen more facts about each topic in the book. Most interesting sections were Weird World and Amazing Escapes.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Amazing!.......2007-01-28

Known internationally for its oddities, Ripley's once again publishes a volume filled with amazing facts and astounding information. I loved these as a child and I'm still entertained by the snippets of stunning factoids about the world around us. It makes for a great water-closet read, not to mention a way to gain all sorts of trivia to use as ice breakers. From the one-eyed kitten to the kid that kicked a target almost 3,000 times in an hour, it's all bound to make you go, "Wow!"... or at least cause you to shake your head in wonder.

5 out of 5 stars Ripley's continue to come up with the unbelievable!.......2007-01-15

One of my favorite books when I was about 10 years ago,was "Believe it or Not!" by Ripley. It was a hardcover of 172 pages and an utter delight to me,living in a small town, well before the age of TV.This fascinating and yes,,unbelievable stuff opened up the wonders of the world. Later on, we got Ripley's cartoons in the papers, and in the early 50's a long string of paperbacks.Believe it or Not!;they sold for 25 cents.
Ripley's has continued to entertain and amaze us right up to the present time. This latest book ,like those of the past,is once again excellent. Now that Ripley's is on TV,you would think that books are out of date. Not so,the stuff on TV is the sort of thing that is enhanched by sound and motion.Books still do an excellent job of covering most stories. The daily cartoon in the papers has not been available where I live for several years. However;that is not a problem,as Ripley's website carries it and has archives available as well.
The item in this book that was most interesting to me was about Bryan Berg, the amazing cardstacker shown on pages 70 and 71.I had the wonderful opportunity to watch him build these amazing structures at the Canadian National Exhibition here in Toronto in 2005.Even these pictures hardly do him justice. He has constructed the Empite State Building ,25 feet high and using a ladder. He also constructs a structure ,a couple of levels high. Then he places a plywood panel on top;and gets a baseball team and its coach to stand on top. Believe It or Not!;It doesn't collapse. If interested,Bryan has written a book,"Stacking the Deck" and shows the basis methods used in building these structures. It's a lot of fun, even if you only attempt simple buildings;but the sky is the limit.
Once again another great Ripley book. Not only is the material excellent;the paper, construction, printing and color is excellent as well.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE!!.......2007-05-16

This is a MUST HAVE for Ripley's fans. It is the ultimate in Ripley books. It contains beautiful color pictures, and history of all the Ripley finds and adeventures. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars I just love useless facts!!!.......2005-04-26

I got this through the mail expecting to only look at the pictures, because reading anything other than historical romance isn't my thing (haha). But I spent two days reading this. It was so entertaining. I've seen the show LOTS of times, but reading all of these facts was a lot more fun. I've noticed the repeated fact that another reviewer wrote about. I also ordered the Guiness Book of World Records after Ripley's because now I've a new love...useless facts. I recommend this book to everyone, it's just pure fun all the way around.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Entertaining Read.......2005-01-28

I bought this book in lieu of the 2005 Guiness Book of World Records, and I don't regret the decision at all.

This is a huge book- 250 pages- with thousands of interesting and bizzare tidbits in categories such as "Amazing Earth", "Body and Mind", "Wonders of Science", "Fun and Games", and "Beyond Belief". I had never watched the Ripley's show or read any other Ripley's books before. The facts are just as fascinating as in Guiness, but they are presented in a more fun, colorful, and kid- friendly way.

This would make a great present for any kid (or grown- up kid), even for those who don't read much.

The editing isn't the greatest, and I found one fact that is repeated twice in two different sections (see if you can catch it!) but I still give it a full 5 stars!

And... the cover makes me kind of dizzy, but that's okay. ;-)

5 out of 5 stars "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" was written by a German........2005-01-20

Not only that, the words to 'Danny Boy' were written by an Englishman,'Maggie' was written by a Canadian and 'I'll Take you Home Again Kathleen' was written in America, and was a promise to bring the writer's lover back from out west to New York;not from America back to Ireland. There is no end of the things that are not as they first might seem. One of my favorites is that 'The Birdman of Alcatraz,Robert Stroud, who did all that research on birds, while serving a life sentence for murder, did it in Leavenworth prison, not Alcatraz.
If you enjoy reading this sort of of thing;Ripley was the undisputed master of turning up this stuff, from all over the world.Although there have been many imitators, and some pretty good ones at that,he was the inventor and the best at the game.
I have been a big fan and reader of Ripley since I was about 10 years old,and I am now approaching 70.As a young lad I got his first Believe It or Not! and noticed it was recently reprinted as a reproduction and selling in a 'big box bookstore'.It is exactly like the one I had so many years ago.
Over the years ,I have read and collected many of these books over the years. My favorites were the paperback series that started in1950,and about 30 same out,Also many large 'Special' books like this one. Also a series of Comic books.Just when it looked like the end to his long trail, the TV series started. It,s been a long run and I've never tired of it because there's always new material. One of my favorite books about Ripley was 'Ripley -The Modern Marco Polo' by Bob Considine. In this book ,Considine,a pal of Ripley's, tells so much about Ripley that one realizes that his life was as wild and just as unbelievable as the stuff he wrote about. After all these years, his cartoon is still carried daily in nany newspapers.Unfortunately not here in Toronto, and maybe not where you live;but fear not,it's on the Net under 'Believe It or Not'.There are several BION Museums around the country with wonderful exhibits.I visited the one in Niagara Falls a couple of years ago.Enjoyed it very much, but surprised that they had no books to sell;hopefully that oversight has been corrected by now.
I must say the printing, paper, almost exclusive use of color photography, and overall construction of this book is excellent.I would like to offer just one bit of criticism, that being of some printing on top of pictures. This accomplishes very little other than making for difficult legibility.(examples are pages 59,78,134 144,153 & 179)
A great book for people off all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Kids love this book!.......2006-09-14

Having lost all of my classroom materials in Hurricane Katrina, I was hunting for things to furnish my room at my new school. I don't remember where I heard about this book, but I purchased it from Amazon and it was the best money I have spent in a long time. I teach in an all-boys school - boys love weird stuff! That book is in someone's hands all the time. I may have to buy another copy soon - this one is getting worn out. Adults will not find it overly interesting, but I bought it for the kids and they definitely do.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2006-09-05

Good book if you are a fan of the unbelievable and Robert R. Ripley. This is great, long cofee table book on almost EVERY SINGLE subject you can think about! There are over 1,400 unbelievable facts in this book, more than you can think about!

This book is over 300 pages long in its first print (over 200 in second print) and worth every single penny!

1 out of 5 stars Urban legends find a home.......2006-06-19

Typical of a Ripley's Beleive It Or Not book, there are no
refrences. It is a collection of cute trivia from the older
Ripley's Believe It Or Not books. Problem is, most of what
can be checked, is wrong. Frank Wells was never on the Titanic
nor the other ship disasters claimed. The section on laws
includes myths and jokes that someone believed. Stories from
older Ripley books are re-told with different names. It even
says "Mushrooms are a fruit." (They are actually fungi.)

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, if sparse on details.......2006-01-20

An excellent occasional read, with something to surprise you on every page. One issue I had with this book was the lack of sources for some of the facts. I hope future editions of Ripley's books include or allow access to an online source-book for those interested in digging deeper.

5 out of 5 stars Oddities and eccentricities delight.......2005-12-25

Aaaah I love a good book showcasing the bizarre. This is an incredible book that includes interesting facts and photographs to boot, of amazing individuls, creatures, plants, and events. There is over 5,000 random selections of the most curious things. Some examples include a cow with 8 legs, a man with palm fronds in his skull, a cat born with fur that spells out cat, a dog that wears dentures, man who can flip up the stairs, a man who made an eccentric garden out of curving and knotting tree boughs, an eggplant whose seeds that spelled out God, the man who is turning himself into a lizard, men who can pick up cars, and women who can skate on their toes. Its like a Guiness Book of Records but these facts would not be exactly world famous but just unusual. I love this book and my friend bought this for her 11 year old who has read every page. Its filled with pictures and facts so its a huge collection. It would be great for a coffee table or anyone who embraces eccentricities or has a healthy curiosity.

4 out of 5 stars Ok book (Please mind my spelling).......2005-01-03

"Creepy Stuff" opened my eyes and my mind to a world full of just so..."Creepy Stuff!" I was enlightened with the facts, stories, and pictures. I learned a lot from that book while broadining my thinking skills. (though I might not have that many)And even though I got many of the trivia questions wrong, it was a great experience to read this book...Believe it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!.......2004-11-20

Ripley's Believe It or Not! Creepy Stuff is an excellent compact sized book packed of fascinating information on macabre and scary subject matter. There are five chapters, chapter one is on Visions, Dreams and Prophecies. Chapter two covers Coincidence or Destiny, chapter three Not-So inanimate Objects, chapter four Spooks, Specters and Witches with the final fifth chapter covering Just Plain Weird. Every chapter has a quiz with a final larger quiz at the end of the book. There are also six colour pages in the middle with great photographs.

Inside you learn interesting information such as the Titanic carried an Egyptian mummy that everyone who had come in contact with had previously died, did it sink because of the mummy's curse? Two brothers were killed a year apart by the same taxi with the same passenger is another fascinating fact this book teaches. I don't want to give anything else away lets just say this is an excellent easy to read book. If you like this book also check out the much, much larger Ripley's Believe it or Not Encyclopedia of the Bizarre.

A long time reader and buyer of Ripley,in fact ever since his first book;but I must say I was not impressed with this effort.I got the impression it was just pumped out from a stack of old files and maybe items that didn't make the grade before.Ripley, himself, was what made Believe It or Not what it was.He was a bigger than life personality and today there is nobody taking his place at Ripley's.This book reminds me of the numerous others that did take-offs of Ripley, and never came close to the master.Maybe if the resources were spent on creating a world reknown traveller, explorer of the unbeaten track;who could put the imagination back into the cartoons ,rather than trying to get by on marketing and graphics;we would get the quality product that made Believe It or Not what it was. This book appears to be something cranked out with minimal effort and imagination for the kids market. When Ripley was around his cartoons had appeal for all ages.
I really believe a replacement for Ripley himself, who is a character himself, with widespread recognition, often appearing as a guest on talk shows,is what is needed to put new life and personality back into the cartoons.File, research, marketing, art and graphics departments just don't do the job.
The daily cartoons in some newspapers and on the web site drawn by a John Graziano are an attempt to produce the cartoons;but who is he? One never had to ask who Ripley was, every knew who he was and he was as recognizable as Babe Ruth or the President of the United States.A long time tradion of Ripley was to show the name and town of people who submitted items. It seems he was much more involved personally with his fans than the unrecognizable "staff" we have today.I believe Ripley would have considered it only a common courtesy to recognize his contributors.Any long time fan knows how much people, mail and fans meant to him.

4 out of 5 stars There are SO many strange things inside this book! .......2005-01-02

You got it folks. The RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT 2005 SPECIAL EDITION book. That's right. There's nothing stranger than the truth when you read this. It's all real. Just like any other "Ripley's" book, there are animals doing amazing things, people with nothing better to do then to decorate of their possessions in a wacky way, people doing things to themselves, and from everything from entertainment to fun to just plain weird, this is a wonderful piece of literature. Also visit the museums! They're not bad at all.

5 out of 5 stars As good as the museum in Myrtle Beach.......2004-08-10

I LOVE THE MUSEUMS AND THE BOOK. I'M WAITING TO SEE IF THERE'LL BE A 2005 BOOK.MUCH OF THIS BOOK IS PRETTY CREEPY AND COOL AT THE SAME TIME.FOR SOME STUFF, I DON'T SEE HOW THEY COULD DO IT. I'VE ALSO HEARD THERE'S A MUSEUM IN TENNESSEE, TOO. IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN TO ANY, GO TO ONE. YOU WILL, WITHOUT A DOUBT, BE AMAZED.

5 out of 5 stars Review By X S C.......2004-01-21

I am a fifth grader from P.S. 42. Many people in our class have read Ripley's Believe It or Not Special Edition 2004. Some say this book is very cool and some say it is not. Well, I say its very interesting because of the pictures and the descriptions. Believe It or Not Special Edition 2004 tells the weird facts that all people are interested in reading. Someone fell 20-stories from Liberty Bank Building in Buffalo, New York and he survived! Most people would be flat from a 20-story fall but this guy didn't. Even people survived in extreme cold by burning their money! I think most boys in my class wanted to read it because of the pictures or because it's a new book. Is there somebody with a magnetic body? Or is there a reptile man? You'll know when you read "Ripley's Believe It or Not Special Edition 2004!" You'll be amazed by the stories they tell you!!

I really enjoyed this book for a few reasons. This book tells the truth. Most people always hide their ugly side. But in this book, a person with three legs tell other people he has three legs. Isn't he embarrassed? Well, maybe he is embarrassed. Probably not.

I think children below 6 shouldn't read this ( 7 and above could). When children under 6 read this book, they might get nightmares about the disgusting pictures in the book. If they really wanted to read this book, they could but if they read it and get nightmares, it's their fault.

In this book, there are too many facts so I'll just ask a few question: Did the man with a metal pole in his chest live after the pole went in? How about the dolphin who spoke? How did the camper know he had a snake in his body?

People in our class, mostly girls think that some of the pictures are disgusting. On page 29 of the book, there are skulls. Skulls are disgusting to look at. Also when you look at the skulls, it looks like its smiling at you. Anyway, I really liked this book and it should be for children who are disgusting. I have one of the Ripley's Believe It or Not books and their facts are really cool for boys. So go to a book store and see if you can get your hands on this fabulous book! But if you don't like this book, you could go to Amazon.com and tell them your opinion about the book.

4 out of 5 stars The Amazing, Unbelievable Ripley's.......2002-05-14

Ripley's Believe It or Not is a great bok. It contains many interesting facts, which will leave you in shock and disbelief. I thought Ripley's Believe It or Not was awesome. I had a lot of fun reading the book and I learned many amazing facts. Based on the T.V hit show, Ripley's Believe It or Not is mind-boggeling. Many people think that it is the same as Guiness Book of Records, but it is not. Ripley's Believe It or Not tells you amazing facts and you decide whether it is true or not. None of the facts in Ripley's are in the Guiness Book of Records.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy Little Book Will Entertain You For Hours.......2007-09-22

The latest entry to the market by the Ripley's team is a thick, heavy square shaped collection of pages about odd things covering a range of topics from around the world and even beyond it. The reader is taken on nine different journeys starting with Ripley's World where the history of the man himself is explained in great detail along with the 27 museums spread across nine countries throughout the world. Some interesting pictures of the Niagara and Branson buildings. Next we the reader are taken to the chapter Beyond Belief. Here topics such as miraculous survival (heaps of entries where people have been impaled by various objects and survived complete with photographs), plus your regular Ripley's pierceings, people carrying heavy stuff by various body parts, cats surviving in washing machines stuff like this.

We then move onto Amazing Earth where natural phenomenon are explained as well as towns where people live underground and the like. Body and Mind is the next chapter presenting more piercings, fertility statues, little kids weightlifting, lips pierced with big objects and the like. Wonders of Science covers online auctions, man made body parts, gene alterations, breeding different animals together, robots, inventions and so on. Next the reader journeys to Extraordinary Animals, which is pretty self explanatory looking at some of the adaptations of different animals. Fun and Games deals with the bizarre things people collect, biggest shoe ever made and things like this. Arts and Entertainment looks at sculptures and even functional devices made from rubbish, jellybeans well a large range of things along with movies, plays and the like. The final chapter Beyond Understanding takes the reader to outer space, aliens, ghosts and the like.

An interesting read!

I have been a big fan of "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" ever since I was a kid. I followed the Ripley cartoons in the newspapers and for my 10th birthday I got the hardcover "Believe It or Not!" in 1945. It had actually been published in 1930.Ripley made his first "Believe It or Not!" cartoon about amazing sport feats when he faced a slow day while working as a sports colmminist for the New York Globe. So,this whole world of "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" actually started by accident....Believe It or Not! Although my local newspaper doesn't carry these cartoons any longer; and it seems that most newspapers have forgotten who their readers are. I still follow Ripley's and Dick Tracey on the Websites. Thank God for the Net. You really gotta wonder why we continue to buy those daily papers. One day I'm going to find the only strip I follow in the paper,Doonesbury, will be dropped; but not to worry,it's also on the Net. If I find my name in the obits one day;I swear I'll quit my subscription ,alltogether;..."You'd Better Believe It!
At least we still have these wonderful books Ripley's keep publishing.I look forward to each new one and buy them all. I have a large number of Ripley books, including those little paperbacks ,which are real gems.
One of my favorite Ripley books is; "Ripley-The Modern Marco Polo- The Life and Times of the Creator of 'Believe It or Not'" by Bob Considine ;of Baseball fame and a great pal of Ripley ;published in 1961. It describes the life that Ripley led, which was as unbelievable as his cartoons. It's worth the effort to find it.
This latest "Believe It or Not! is another excellent production in the long enjoyed series of publications. The Ripley people have maintained the highest standards in bringing the world's greatest oddities to us;and these high standards are continued in this book.
If you are a Ripley Fan;don't miss it!

4 out of 5 stars She loved it!.......2005-10-23

My 13 year old daughter simply loved it. She read it in 10 minutes. It is slim though....
For a moment she thought what the book said was a joke, so perhaps it would be better to make sure children know in advance that what they are going to read is really true.

4 out of 5 stars World's Weirdest Critters.......2002-03-22

This is a fun book filled with amazing animals. For example I like the furry frog. It can't get much weirder than that! The book tells a lot about the animal you read about and it has pictures of the animal too. I think you would like this book.

The acquisition has hundreds of little known facts and feats
by persons everywhere. The Encyclopedia of Needle Artwork is shown.
A typical entry describes a Statute of Liberty situated in the
eye of a needle. Leo Sewell literally converts trash to valued
treasure. A 600 pound lady is shown from an earlier period.
The use of candles in cutting hair is depicted. Captain Frodo
is shown in practically every contortion imaginable. The acquisition would make a good conversation piece. In addition,
this volume would be helpful in crafting any student project
on minor subject areas of science and little known facts.
The book would make a wonderful gift for the student in your
home.
